With the start of the 2018 Cup Series season just days away, it’s time to review and preview all of the changes that have happened from 2017 to 2018. If you need a brief primer before you settle in and watch racing this weekend, you’re in the right spot. Here’s a guide to get you up to speed before the grueling 36-race Cup season officially kicks off. 
DRIVER CHANGES
• Erik Jones moves from the No. 77 at Furniture Row Racing to the No. 20 at Joe Gibbs Racing in place of Matt Kenseth, who is unofficially retired. The No. 77 at Furniture Row has been shuttered and the team is only running the No. 78 for Martin Truex Jr.
• Alex Bowman is in the No. 88 at Hendrick Motorsports for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who will serve as an analyst for NBC in 2018.
• Chase Elliott hasn’t gone anywhere, but he’s driving the No. 9 instead of the No. 24.
• The No. 24 belongs to Xfinity Series champion William Byron, who inherits the seat at Hendrick Motorsports that was occupied by Kasey Kahne a year ago. Byron has Kahne’s No. 5 crew while Elliott has his No. 24 team from a year ago. But rebranded as the No. 9.
• Kahne is in the No. 95 for Levine Family Racing. He replaces Michael McDowell.
• McDowell is in the No. 34 for Front Row Motorsports replacing Landon Cassill, who doesn’t have a ride for 2018.
• Paul Menard is in the No. 21 for the Wood Brothers after Ryan Blaney’s departure to a third Team Penske Team. Blaney will drive the No. 12 for Team Penske.
• Menard’s old No. 27 team at Richard Childress Racing is no more. That charter has been leased to StarCom Racing, which will attempt the full season with Jeffrey Earnhardt.
• Aric Almirola moves from the No. 43 car at Richard Petty Motorsports to the No. 10 at Stewart-Haas Racing in place of Danica Patrick, who will make her final NASCAR start in the Daytona 500. Patrick will drive that race for Premium Motorsports.
• Taking Almirola’s place in the No. 43 car is Bubba Wallace, who subbed for Almirola in 2017 after Almirola broke his back in a crash at Kansas Speedway in May.

SCHEDULE CHANGES
• Chicagoland Speedway no longer hosts the first race of the playoffs. Instead, its annual race is on July 1. The first playoff race is now at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
• The final race of the regular season will now take place at Indianapolis Motor Speedway as the Brickyard 400 moves to Sep. 8. Richmond International Raceway’s second date is now the second race of the playoffs. The short track has served as the final race in the regular season since the institution of NASCAR’s playoff system in 2004. Richmond’s spring date, which had been moved to Sunday afternoon, is back on Saturday night.
• Charlotte’s second race, and the third race of the playoffs, will be contested on a hybrid track consisting of the 1.5-mile oval and infield road course. It’s the first time that type of configuration has been used in Cup Series history.

CAR CHANGES
• Chevrolet has dropped the SS, which was the team’s car of choice since NASCAR moved to the current generation of Cup Series cars in 2013. In its place is the Camaro, which has a far different nose than the SS did. Ideally for Chevy teams, it’ll be on par with the Camry that Toyota introduced in 2017.
• Ford is sticking with its Fusion model but will have a new model in 2019.
CONFUSING QUOTE OF THE OFFSEASON

This doesn’t make much sense, especially in the prism of Dillon driving for one-car team Germain Racing. Bryant won all of his NBA Finals with Shaquille O’Neal as his sidekick and the Lakers were a worldwide brand long before Bryant joined the team thanks to the Showtime-era Lakers of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and others.
Dillon, the grandson of team owner Richard Childress and brother of Austin Dillon, also had an interesting quote in the same article about Dale Earnhardt. We certainly appreciate his self-confidence, even if his comparisons make us look like the thinking emoji.
“I have such a platform and I don’t think a lot of people realize what we have,” Dillon said. “… Something that has bothered me about our sport in the ‘90s and 2000s everybody said they could relate so well to Dale Earnhardt. That’s why they loved him. He’s obviously the top level of fandom in our sport. Everybody could relate to him so well and he did such a great job of making people feel they are just like Dale Earnhardt, even though he’s a race car driver. I feel like I can do that.”
CHAMPIONS GOING FOR ANOTHER TITLE
• An eighth championship for Jimmie Johnson would make him the most prolific driver in NASCAR history. Johnson is currently tied with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt with seven championships. How crazy would it be if Johnson, 42, won title No. 8 and retired at the end of the 2018 season?
• No other active driver has more than one title. Martin Truex Jr. is going for back-to-back titles after winning his first in 2017. Kyle Busch (2015), Kevin Harvick (2014), Brad Keselowski (2012) and Kurt Busch (2004) are all looking for championship No. 2 as well.
RIVALRY OF THE SEASON (AGAIN)
• This is a no-brainer. Keselowski and Busch are two of the best drivers in the sport and aren’t fans of each other. Their rivalry is the best NASCAR has had since Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt and was only heightened in 2017, when they had a couple run-ins on the track and both raced for the championship. If you think NASCAR is lacking in rivalries, how are you missing Busch v. Keselowski?
OTHER STORYLINES TO WATCH
• Austin Dillon remarked in January that Richard Childress Racing was “leaner and meaner” as a two-car team in 2018. Is that really going to be true? Roush Fenway Racing improved its performance from 2016 to 2017 when going from three cars to two, though it’s imperative to note that its three-car team in 2016 wasn’t fully-funded. RCR’s drop from three cars to two is because Paul Menard’s sponsored ride went to the Wood Brothers. Not only has RCR lost a car, it’s lost millions and millions of sponsor dollars too. The situations are not comparable.
• How does Toyota keep the advantage it had in 2017? We can quibble with what the word “advantage” actually means, but it’s clear that Joe Gibbs Racing and Furniture Row Racing were far superior to the competition in 2017. Can they carry that over to 2018? Or will Chevy’s Camaro catch up? Will Ford find speed?
• What are pit stops going to look like with one fewer crew member allowed over the wall to service cars in 2018? It’s a curious decision by NASCAR to cut the sizes of pit crews, especially with the spin that the move puts more emphasis on pit stops. 
• Which young driver wins a race first? Elliott’s the odds-on favorite after he came close a couple of times in 2017. Jones’ No. 20 car will be fast and Byron and Bowman will also get a lot of love from their presence at Hendrick Motorsports. Don’t count out Daniel Suarez either, who finished in the top 20 in the points standings after being thrust into the Cup Series in 2017.
• Will Monster decide this spring to return for 2019 and 2020 as the title sponsor of the Cup Series? Will the company get another extension for more time to decide? Will Monster bail?
• Will fewer teams miss qualifying in 2018 because of NASCAR’s new inspection system?

NASCAR Power Rankings: Kyle Busch sweeps his way to No. 1

Welcome to Power Rankings. As always, Power Rankings are far from a scientific formula. In fact, it’s the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. Direct all your complaints to us at [email protected] and we’ll try to have some fun.
1. Kyle Busch (LW: 3): What do you give the guy who has won everything at Bristol? The top spot in Power Rankings. Because let’s be real, Kyle Busch can easily afford whatever gift we would give him if we were in the business of giving gifts to NASCAR drivers.
Busch’s wins in the Camping World Truck Series, Xfinity Series and Cup Series over the wekeend gave him 20 total wins at Bristol across the three series. Busch has won 180 career races across those series, meaning Bristol has accounted for a ninth of his overall win total. That’s pretty insane, don’t you think?
What makes Busch’s Bristol success even more impressive is that he’s been good at the track in any of its configurations. He’s won at the “old” Bristol, won on the progressive banking installed in 2007, won after the top groove was ground down to make the track more like “old” Bristol and has won with the track featuring the sticky stuff in the corners to make the lower groove more appealing.
The 2015 champion is perhaps the most adaptable driver in NASCAR. And one of its best too. He said he was pushing as hard as he could to hold off Erik Jones after he passed Jones with 55 laps to go.
“Tonight I’ve never driven so hard in my life the last 60 laps,” Busch said after Saturday night’s win. “Literally I got out of the car and felt like I didn’t want to. It was really, really hard to maintain that pace up top and to feel everything you’re feeling and to trust yourself that I’m feeling the car loose getting into the corner sliding the rear tires, but I’m tight in the center. Got to go up on the rear track bar, keep the thing free rolling. Any little moment, any little slip, you can be right in the fence, especially running that high that fast, knowing that Erik Jones was catching me. I couldn’t just sit there and pace myself.”

2. Martin Truex Jr. (LW: 1): Truex’s race was ruined when he had to come back down pit road because of a tire problem as the race was restarting. Truex lost two laps and ended up getting one of them back before he finished 21st.
Before the pit stop, Truex had a top five car, though he wasn’t in the same stratosphere as his rookie teammate. He only drops a spot in Power Rankings because he still has a 100+ point lead over Busch in the points standings and can clinch the regular season title at Darlington.
3. Kyle Larson (LW: 2): Before qualifying on Friday, Larson said he wasn’t a very good qualifier at Bristol and joked that he’d qualify 25th. He ended up starting Saturday night’s race in second and led 70 laps, the most of anyone not named Kyle Busch or Erik Jones.
He didn’t finish third, however. He finished ninth because of a pit stop problem on his final stop of the race.

4. Denny Hamlin (LW: 4): This is the guy who finished third. Hamlin kept slowing on pit road to get the preferred outside line on restarts. It didn’t work out for him, though it did raise the possibility that NASCAR will “look” at giving drivers the option of choosing lanes on restarts at tracks where one groove has a decided advantage.

The easiest way to prevent gamesmanship on pit road among drivers playing for a preferred groove is to go back to single-file restarts. That’s not happening. So could a choose cone be next?

5. Matt Kenseth (LW: 6): Kenseth finished fourth. It’s a good result for him as he stays afloat in the playoffs as one of the three drivers provisionally in the field without a win.
But perhaps better for Kenseth was the fact that Erik Jones didn’t win. A Jones win would have dropped the number of available playoff spots via points to two. While Jamie McMurray would be outside the playoffs if Jones would have won, Kenseth is just three points ahead of McMurray.
6. Kevin Harvick (LW: 5): Harvick is fourth in the points standings thanks to an ability to avoid poor finishes in 2017. He moved through the field Saturday night, finishing eighth after starting 29th.
But he hasn’t had the outright speed he’s shown previously. That’s to be expected; transitioning manufacturers isn’t always a smooth transition. But it’s still stark. He’s on pace for 818 laps led this season. He led nearly 1,400 a year ago.
7. Erik Jones (LW: 10): Jones’ car was fantastic on the bottom lane throughout the entire race. But as Busch caught him over the last part of the race, Jones moved up to try to hold him off. It didn’t work.
Despite falling short of his first career win, Jones said Saturday night was the most fun he’s had in a race car. And his explanation for why is pretty damn good.
“It’s just the most‑‑ these cars are so hard to drive on mile‑and‑a‑half’s and two‑mile tracks that it’s hard to race,” Jones said. “It’s hard to race side‑by‑side, it’s hard to race front‑to‑back, it’s really hard to run side‑by‑side. You don’t really see the action like you see here with people, you know, right nose‑to‑tail, throwing slide jobs, everything like that.
“Yeah, I mean, it takes you back to, you know, late model racing really more than anything. You’re just on the gas. You’re not saving tires. You’re just hammer down and getting everything you can, which is a lot of fun. It’s hard on you as a driver, it wears you out, but you definitely have a lot of fun. If I had to rank it, this is probably the most fun I’ve had in a Cup race, for sure.”

8. Jamie McMurray (LW: 9): McMurray finished 12th. Through 24 races he has two top-five finishes and 12 top 10s in 2017. He’s also finished in the top 20 in 20 of 24 races. That’s why he’s ninth in the points standings and could be a surprise driver in the third round of the playoffs.
9. Brad Keselowski (LW: 6): Bright side: Keselowski is getting his bad luck out of the way before the playoffs begin and will be a force to be reckoned with over the final 10 races of the season
Dark side: Keselowski’s summer struggles are a sign of things to come and he’ll be a surprise early elimination from the playoffs.
Keselowski’s race was ruined a handful of laps into the event with a cut tire. He finished 29th, seven laps down. He had nine top-10 finishes (and two wins) in the first 12 races of the season. In the next 12 he’s had five top-10 finishes and has finished outside the top 25 four times.
10. Chase Elliott (LW: 8): Elliott rebounded nicely from his lap 397 crash and finished 18th. He’s getting precipitously close to being on the playoff bubble, however. If he can finish in the top 15 at both Darlington and Richmond he should be OK.
11. Jimmie Johnson (LW: 11): Johnson won the spring race at Bristol and finished 11th on Saturday night. There are just two more races until Johnson leads half the laps at Chicago to no one’s surprise.
12. Kurt Busch (LW: NR): Busch finished fifth on Saturday night and had a few interesting tweets on Tuesday. He seems to be enjoying his off week.
Lucky Dog: Trevor Bayne hit the wall because of a flat tire and still ended up finishing seventh.
The DNF: Austin Dillon finished 39th after a crash with Jeffrey Earnhardt.
Dropped out: Kasey Kahne

NASCAR Power Rankings: Truex goes to the top spot

Welcome to Power Rankings. As always, Power Rankings are far from a scientific formula. In fact, it’s the perfect blend of analytics and bias against your favorite driver. Direct all your complaints to us at [email protected] and we’ll try to have some fun.
1. Martin Truex Jr. (LW: 3): We are all living in Martin Truex Jr.’s NASCAR oyster.
His hastily arranged marriage with Furniture Row Racing in the late stages of the 2013 season is blossoming far more than anyone ever expected. And Truex has now gone from a driver who had exceptional speed but couldn’t get things to go his way (2016) to the most dominant driver in the sport. 
“You know, last year was certainly a successful season but felt like we didn’t show how good we really were,” Truex said. “We didn’t achieve the things that we thought we were capable of, and so this year I feel like we’ve done a better job. Obviously we’ve been more consistent with the points lead and the stage wins and all those things.”
Truex’s four wins — the most of anyone — and 16 stage wins — again, the most of anyone — will put NASCAR’s new playoff points system to the test over the final 10 races of the season. If the objective was to reward dominant drivers with a significant head start towards the final round, Truex is making NASCAR’s new formula look prescient. Now he just needs to avoid disaster in the first nine races of the playoffs before racing three other drivers heads up for the title.

2. Kyle Busch (LW: 1): It’s not an direct comparison, but if there’s a driver that’s taken on the “Truex in 2016” role, it’s certainly Busch. 
Busch won Saturday’s Xfinity race at Watkins Glen and probably had the fastest car during Sunday’s Cup Series race. But after a pit stop issue after the first stage, Busch didn’t get a chance to sniff the lead.
He drove like hell to get back to the front, but as you know, was involved in a bus stop spin with Brad Keselowski. That pretty much ruined Busch’s chances for the win, though he ended up finishing seventh.
3. Denny Hamlin (LW: 4): Hamlin finished fourth, which continues an interesting trend.
“Another fourth place finish – I don’t know how many that is this year but definitely been ringing them off,” Hamlin said after the race. And we’ll now do the math for him.
Hamlin has moved up four spots in the points standings over the last eight races. And in those eight races, Hamlin has accumulated six top-five finishes. One of those was a win at New Hampshire. Every other top-five finish has been a fourth.
That’s a really good trend until you realize that fourth in the final points standings means Hamlin was last among title contenders at Homestead. Though fourth is better than fifth, right?
4. Kevin Harvick (LW: 2): Harvick ended up 17th at the Glen even though he probably had a top-10 car. He was involved in a bizarre incident on pit road that caused a lot of damage to the front of his car 
Harvick was pulling out of his pit stall as Brett Moffitt went to go pull into his a few stalls ahead of Harvick. But Moffitt stopped right in front of Harvick’s pit box to let the car preceding his pit stall to go. Harvick’s team, clearly unaware of Moffitt’s plan not to be in the way (and therefore in the way of Harvick), gave him the all clear and Harvick rammed into the back of Moffitt’s car.
5. Brad Keselowski (LW: 6): Keselowski moves up a spot because he probably had a top-five finish heading his way until a late pit stop penalty. When he pitted from the lead with four laps to go — Keselowski wasn’t going to make it to the end on fuel — he drove through too many pit boxes and had to serve a penalty. He finished 15th.
Keselowski also provided this quote about his tangle with Kyle Busch and if he’d be speaking with his rival.
“Nah. I don’t think he is really the listening type, so that is pretty doubtful,” Keselowski said.
Much like their Xfinity incident at Michigan, what happened at Watkins Glen was organic. And yet another reason why the two drivers have the best rivalry in the sport.
6. Kyle Larson (LW: 5): Larson’s summer swoon is incredible. He started second and finished 23rd at Watkins Glen.
Five races ago, Larson was a point ahead of Truex Jr. at the top of the points standings. Then a 35-point penalty happened for failing post-race inspection at Kentucky. And now Larson has finished outside the top 20 for the past three races.
Combine those finishes with the penalty and Truex’s recent success and Larson is now third in the points standings, six points behind Kyle Busch and 122 behind Truex.
7. Matt Kenseth (LW: 9): It’s fun to wonder what would have happened at Watkins Glen if the race was 91 laps instead of 90.
Kenseth was chasing down Truex and would have gotten one chance to get to his bumper based off the rate he closed in over the final two laps. Given Kenseth’s position in the points standings, it seems fair that Kenseth would be as aggressive as possible with his bumper to get into the playoffs.
A Kenseth win would mean that just two spots would be open in the playoffs on points and those spots would be in the hands of Chase Elliott and Jamie McMurray …
8. Clint Bowyer (LW: 8): And a Kenseth win would have dampened the playoff chances of Bowyer ever so slightly. Had Kenseth won on Sunday, Bowyer would be 34 points out of a playoff spot (behind McMurray). Since Kenseth didn’t, Bowyer is 28 points out of the playoffs. 
While Bowyer is glad his car made it to the end on fuel (and he finished fifth), he’s probably happier that Kenseth didn’t win the race.

9. Kasey Kahne (LW: 7): Kahne finished 16th in his final race before Hendrick Motorsports’ announcement that he wouldn’t be with the team in 2018.
Coincidentally, he was driving a car that was sponsored by the documentary currently airing on Complex’s Rated Red that chronicles Hendrick’s 2016 season. Yes, the final time Kahne drove for Hendrick before publicly becoming a lame duck driver was in a car used to promote the team. It’s quite Kahne.
10. Daniel Suarez (LW: 12): Suarez finished third at the Glen and is now ahead of drivers like Ryan Newman, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Kahne and Austin Dillon in the points standings.
They all have wins and will make the playoffs. Barring a surprise, Suarez won’t.

11. Chase Elliott (LW: 10): Elliott finished 13th after starting fourth on Sunday. He’s just five points ahead of McMurray and therefore 39 ahead of Bowyer for the first spot that’s currently out of the playoffs. He’s not far from the danger zone.
12. Jimmie Johnson (LW: 11): When watching the cool-down lap of Sunday’s race, Johnson’s car appeared on the screen. We wondered “wow, that was a quiet race for Jimmie. Where did he finish?” The answer is 29th. 
Lucky Dog: Ryan Blaney finished eighth despite a late pit stop. You can make a very good argument he deserves to be at No. 12 over Johnson.
The DNF: Trevor Bayne didn’t even take the green flag because of brake issues. He rejoined the race nine laps down.
Dropped out: No one.
