new character spawned and he's decided to be yakumo's bf
he's a cool musician that yakumo meets on some dating app, and it was only meant to be a hookup but they ended up being really interested in each other.
i was thinking about yakumo filming one of the guy's concerts and as he's watching him through the camera, he realizes he's falling in love with this guy 🥲
also the guy might be a yuurei (i decided a while ago that the reason a lot of the supernatural creatures in kaisei's story have human-esque forms is because the only connection between their world and humans is when regretful humans die and become yuurei, they end up there. hence as time goes on, yuurei and other supernatural mingle and end up procreating, resulting in human traits mixing with supernatural ones)
this guy died as a human and was reborn as a yuurei, and his regret in life was that he never got to live his life truly as someone who loved both men and women. they actually end up bonding over that shared experience of hiding themselves and feeling resentment about who they are, but have both grown to love and accept themselves and feel capable of extending those feelings to someone else.
it's so funny too, because he messages yakumo first about a photo that he put on his profile (i was being a degenerate and imagining yakumo in a bunny outfit, and then suddenly he was taking professional photos of himself dkdhfnksnd)
and the guy beats around the bush, asking if he's a pro or smth cause man that lighting set up looks so good, and he's making it real obvious that he's analyzing the photo but also letting yakumo nerd out about camera things.
finally yakumo is like "are you like, not gonna ask about the outfit or..?"
and the guy says jokingly he hadn't even noticed it 😔
(He absolutely did, and does say yakumo looks hot as fuck in the outfit, and to pardon his horniness but he would love to see him in person wearing it some day)
((cue yakumo actually getting a little flustered by the compliment))
i imagine he has such a nice voice too...it's deep and can sound gentle, and he mostly produces instrumental music, but he does vocals sometimes for more grungy rock music and it's kinda husky and rough sounding.
picrew of him to get an idea
Tumblr media
the picrew i used, edited to make him more the way he is in me head

What are some of your fave animes
OK LET ME PREFACE THIS BY SAYING I HAVEN’T BEEN INTO ANIME SINCE 2014 AND I AM JUST RECENTLY GETTING BACK INTO IT!! BUT
- DEATH NOTE (netflix, crunchyroll, funimation, kisscartoon)
it follows a guy named Light Yagami who discovers that a shinigamai(god of death) dropped a notebook into the human realm and that whoever’s name is written in it will die(and you can specify how, if you’d like). it shows how he becomes sort of a vigilante to put criminals in place. he is then under suspect as the killer by L, a smart and elite person who works with the police and has never lost a case.
seasons: 1 total episodes: 37
RATING: 10/10!!!
warning: violence/murder, major character death but like thats expected, religious themes(i guess), light swearing
fave characters: matsuda and L are high up there...as well as Mello, Mikami, and Gevanni ships: i mean the most common ship is Lawlight(LxLight) but i think my main are lawtsuda(L x matsuda), mikalight (mikami x light), mikanni (mikami x gevanni), and mellodramattic(mello x matt)/nearlymellodramattic(near x mello x matt)!!! remisa is also cute:( notes: i just spent all my money on the manga! i’m so excited to read it!!!
- SIRIUS THE JAEGER (netflix,  probably kisscartoon but i havent looked)
the main character, Yuliy Jirov, is the last of his tribe (he is a sirus. so like...sorta like a werewolf) and he is set to revenge his family’s death as a jaeger(hunter. but like. a vampire hunter) but it turns out his brother, Mikhail, is alive and was turned. the main goal of the plot is to find and also somehow protect this thing called Ark Of Sirius , which is sort of like sacred power that was given to Yuliy’s tribe, from falling into vampire hands.
seasons: 1 total episodes: 12
RATING: 10/10!!!
warning: violence, action, major(?) character death
fave characters: Yuliy...i love him so much; Mikhail, Hideomi, Willard ships: so uh i wouldn’t recommend going thru the ao3 tag because its a common thing to ship the brothers(*disgusted emoji*) but i am working on writing something to fill the tag with hideomi/mochizuki, hideomi/willard, and yuliy/phillip
notes: i think the way the creators did the vampires is really interesting. honestly i watched it bc of the pretty vampire man in the cover. i learned that i hate him but he’s still pretty. THIS SHOW IS REALLY SHORT PLEASE WATCH IT I AM BEGGING TO HAVE SOMEONE TO TALK ABOUT IT WITH
- CASTLEVANIA (netflix, ???)
Dracula sends creatures of the night(? literally don’t know another way to describe them. uh. monsters?) to attack the cities of Wallachia because they killed his, albeit human, wife (her name is Lisa)because they thought she practiced witchcraft. It follows Trevor Belmont, the last son of the Belmont family (a family that basically killed these creatures + vampires); Sypha Belnades, a badass speaker magician; and Adrian ‘Alucard’ Tepes, the son of dracula. their goal is to end the war against the human race. It also shows Dracula’s side of things and follows the two humans that are on his court, Hector and Isaac (they both denounced humanity because of their bad upbringings/experiences)
seasons: 3 total episodes: 22
RATING: 10/10!!!
warning: violence/gore, action, death/killing, sex, angst, religous themes, swearing
fave characters: really love the main three of course but like i also love Hector ships: trevor/sypha/alucard, hectorcard, alucard x happiness, hector x happiness
notes: it’s based off the video game. season three fucked me up(it’s AMAZING THOUGH!) i cannot wait for season 4 omg:((((
- NARUTO (netflix, cruncyroll, funimation, probs kisscartoon)
naruto uzumaki wants to gain recognition from his peers and also become the leader of his village(hokage)
seasons: 5 (i didn’t watch shippuden. i’m talking the OG naruto) total episodes: 220
RATING: 10/10 but like tbd bc ive only seen the first 3 seasons so far
warning: violence, action
fave characters: kakashi, iruka, gaara, rock lee ships: uhh kakairu(kakashi x iruka) i don’t really ship a lot of things. kobuto x orochimaru is kinda good too but like LKASDFASD
- B: THE BEGINNING (netflix, ???)
Genius investigator Keith Flick rejoins the royal police force, RIS, just as serial killer "B" emerges and commits a double murder. Mysterious youth Koku may be an ally of the group's -- or a target. When the RIS investigates a death that appears to be linked to B, Keith disagrees with the crime being connected to the criminal mastermind. An attack on a member of the RIS leads members of the group to suspect a traitor within their ranks. After being declared a murder suspect, Keith turns himself in. Koku is forced to fight for his survival
i copy and pasted that bc i cannot remember it that well but i do remember liking the show!! i will rewatch and update accordingly w my own summary
RATING: 8/10??? i can’t remember it that well which is why the rating is lower than the others
fave characters: oh dear i cannot remember a lot about this show but it’s good i promise. MINATSUKI was pretty tho ships: idk....
notes: yeah i need to rewatch it but its good i swear
OTHER NOTABLE ONES :::
- tokyo ghoul ( i haven’t seen the new season so i don’t want to review it before that)
- free! (i haven’t seen it in a while aa)
- one punch man (i watched it on a bus w this guy i used to like so it has a place in my heart aa)
- yuri on ice (honestly the fandom sucks but if you ignore that it’s actually pretty cute)
- dramatical murder (uh. this was a bl game and the game was very bad but i think the characters are cute.)
- haikyuu (currently watching)
- bleach (currently watching)
- 7SEEDS (currently watching and like it’s good but it’s kinda slow for me so i might give up on her...)

Meiji Tokyo Renka:  Ep. 1 The Unexpected Strawberry Moon
Anti-climatic kidnapping, unflattering pet names and the most unbelievable high school kids I’ve ever seen.
Series: Meiji Tokyo Renka Platform: Crunchyroll
So here we are, the start of the project, the start of the series. And I realized while I was browsing Crunchyroll that this series is currently ongoing. So I’ll probably add another series to my watch list once I’ve caught up to this one...
Anyways, what were my thoughts on this first episode? Well, it’s not the worst episode I’ve seen... but it’s not the best. It’s at best laughably rough.  So what happened?
After a bumbin’ OP (though not even the most stylish or best ones I’ve heard/seen in this genre alone) we are shown a man in silhouette with a young woman running past him.
Tumblr media
Nyoom!
Our guy in the cape appears to say goodbye, though his lips never move so it’s possible we’re being duped. The next shot is of the same girl in the embrace of another man, for some reason we’re allowed to see him clearly.
Tumblr media
He pats her head and says goodbye as well. The music swells and we get a glimpse of our protagonist... making the dopiest sad face.
Tumblr media
Hold on both my contacts slipped out and I’m not sure who I’m talking to, are you the one with the dead mom ponytail or the one with only one sideburn?
It’s at this point I realized all the dudes introduced in the OP that weren’t these two guys stood no chance. Which sucks because best boy is neither of these guys.
Then we wake from the dream and are introduced to our protagonist  Mei Ayazuki, whose entire personality seems to be: sad and alone. But at least she has a personality. The entire scene of her walking home was giving me Magical Girl Site flashbacks and I already wanted off this ride.
We’re treated to a flashback to some birthday she had as a child. It’s introduced here that Mei loves roast beef, trust me that’s important. It’s also established that Mei has been able to see ghosts for a while. All of her friends think this is weird and shun her despite the fact they are all still of an age to have imaginary friends.
Tumblr media
Why are you weirded out? You’re six, you all still have imaginary friends!
Apparently no one ever in the last ten or so years has found the fact she can talk to spirits cool or interesting and she’s been made into a social pariah... which just strikes me as odd because you’re telling me no one at all would think that was cool? Except for one girl:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rest in peace random Background girl, you were the best character in the whole episode.  Anyways Mei continues to be sad and alone for who knows how long, drowning out the sounds of a ghost calling her name over and over again but not saying anything else useful at all. This again will be important later.
Mei wanders into a random street festival in a park for some reason, as far as I can tell Mei is not going anywhere at all. And we’re introduced to this mother fucker:
Tumblr media
This man scalped the gravedigger from Black Butler and is wearing his hair like a wig!
Monocle man over here basically harasses Mei into getting into his magic box to perform a kidnapping live in front of an enraptured audience. Seriously, as far as we know, Mei never reappears in front of these people this guy is doing a magic show for. I suppose you could assume that she was a plant but that’s a bold assumption to make considering the magician is saying some vaguely ominous things and coerces a girl who clearly is uncomfortable with this into his magic teleportation box.  It’s one episode in and I already hate this guy.  So Mei gets into his box, blacks out and wakes up (after being touched by the ghost hand of mr. kidnapper) in the park, but the festival is all gone and the modern street lamps are replaced with oil lamps, with like real burning fire in them. Totally normal and not at all something she should have noticed. Also her phone simply ceases to function at all, like glitches out and shuts down. If that wasn’t obvious enough Mei then nearly gets killed by a horse-drawn carriage. Out comes red hair from the opening scene and he immediately begins putting his hands all over Mei, like touches her face, her shoulder, her knee... that last one causing her to freak out. He’s confused by her headphones and Mei is still to dumb to understand what happened.
Then dead mom ponytail guy comes out too.
Tumblr media
We are nine minutes into the episode and this guy is already done with everything. Mei’s heart goes doki doki at the sight of him but this anime can't-fool me, I already know she chooses the guy with Loki from Kamigami’s hair. You showed it to me in the opening scene anime! This shot happens and I lose my fucking shit:
Tumblr media
Thirdwheeling much?
Then Mei just gets into the carriage with these two total strangers, and they also kidnap her. This girl is 2/2 for just getting into random people’s forms of transportation. Also green hair refers to red hair’d guy as Ougai-san.
So as it turns out Mei hasn’t just been transported to a historical time period (something surprisingly common in this genre) but also has the other genre staple of being amnesiac. The guys decide the best way to help her is to introduce themselves:
Tumblr media
So Red hair guy says he’s Mori Rintaro but we already heard him get called Ousai-san by the other dude so I’m onto him! He says he’s an Army Sugreon. A likely story.
Tumblr media
The other guy is Hishida Syunso and he would be the best character in this anime if we weren’t introduced to a few more characters later on. Also if I had any knowledge of Japanese history these names would probably start clicking.
Anyways as it turns out the ghost that’s been doing nothing but calling Mei’s name tells her name and she tells the guys. How convenient!
So the guys take Mei to a ball held in the honor of the Russian prince, which definitely sounds like a good idea, considering what she’s wearing. Her knees are even showing! We’re given a shot of the Russian prince who is definetly in on this harem of dudes but doesn’t get properly introduced this episode.
Then some of the worst Dialogue I’ve had the misfortune of hearing is spoken aloud. Mori calls Mei, little Squirrel. And here’s where I die again. It’s the most unflattering pet name I think I’ve ever heard. Mei has done nothing to earn it. Flower or princess or kitten all would have worked to endear me to this princely type character, that’s my usual preferred archetype in this genre after all, but little squirrel?
Anyways a waiter walks past with a plate of roast beef and Mei being weirdly obsessed causes hijinks to ensue, which is how our cast of secondary dudes get’s introduced. Mei knocks the plate out of the waiter’s hand, which is then caught by Kyouka Izumi:
Tumblr media
I promise you the bunny is important, no I am not kidding.
Who then immediately tosses it away because it turns out he’s a massive germaphobe and also an asshole.  The plate is then caught by Otojirou Kawakami, who I literally do not remember a single thing about aside from the fact he’s a stage actor:
Tumblr media
Mei mentions the rabbit on Izumi’s shoulders and we learn that not everyone can see it, which somehow means she gets roped into discussing ghosts which brings the best boy out of the woodwork.
Tumblr media
You can’t tell in this image but this man has heterochromia and it is glorious.
Yakumo Koizumi, as it turns out, has a special fascination with ghosts and he gets so very very excited when people bring it up. He’s also an author and secretly princely. He is a dork and I love him.
Mei spots Gravedigger hair in the crowd and runs after him. Then he exposits the plot of the show to her. God I hate him.
Tumblr media
Then he magics the lights out and a fox ghost shows up, Mei chases it through the ball as it wreaks terror and bunny boy Izumi also goes after it and we’re introduced to the most ridiculous boy yet.
Tumblr media
This man is pointing his corporeal real world sword at a small adorable fox ghost and I wish I were kidding.  This man is Gorou Fujita and he threatens the fox. Mei jumps in front of his sword, the lights turn back on, everyone is confused and Gorou then points his sword at Mei because he’s just that guy.  Then Mori grabs hold of Mei, lifts her to her feet and Gourou calls him Mori Ougai... so I guess that mystery is solved. Then he tells Gorou not to threaten his fiancee, Mei. And I am screaming at my monitor about how he’s known her for literally 2 hours.
Tumblr media
So that’s a good sign. She says sarcastically, already regretting the life choices that brought her to watching a pretty anime boy claim a young high school girl against her will.
And it pretty much ends there. Mori has just claimed Mei as his own in front of a ballroom full of people and Mei has been left flabbergasted by his declaration and I silently plead that this anime doesn’t have one of the characters lock her in a cage “for her protection” because I can already see it heading that direction.

Year One : Part 2
These little drabbles were so much fun to write. I hope you all enjoyed the stories as much as I did writing them.  Sakura’s Character Page
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 |
Summary :  Second half of the previous chapter with the autumn and winter seasons. We finally get to see what happened the rest of the first year of Namimori Middle School with Sakura and her crush Hibari.
Tumblr media
Autumn The season of Autumn in Japan is pretty much like a second summer with colder nights. It was also the season for festivals. To say that Sakura wanted to attend a festival was an understatement. When she was younger Kai and Bai would not let the princess out anywhere without bodyguards . And now that she was attending school on her own and showing that she could handle herself quite well they thought maybe an undercover guard was enough.
So one autumn night Yuna and Sakura went to attend the firework festival at Namimori shrine. Yuna decided to dress up in a cute off white koi fish pattern on the bottom, kimono. Sakura on the other hand wore a dark blue crop top and faded hot pants with her yellow heels. Her hair was down but there was a hair tie around her wrist. Sakura had more than enough money as Yuna asked to try almost all the food and games.
What the girls weren’t expecting to see was all the Disciplinary Committee members walking back and forth collecting money from the stalls. “Good evening Sakura-san, Hinamori-san” Kusakabe said as he went to collect money from the stall that the girls were at. “If you guys are collecting money, does that Hibari isn't too far behind?” she questioned him. “You are correct. He’s closer to the shrine as he does not like crowds.” He shared. Sakura nodded her head understanding that. The head of the stall handed Kusakabe the money without him even asking. “Have a good evening” he nodded to them both and went to continue collecting.
They girls continued to have fun up until the fireworks. Yuna happily found a spot with the best view and the fireworks were very clear but Sakura snuck away to get a glance at Hibari. Sure enough at the top of the stairs of the shrine was Hibari avoiding the crowds and looking at the fireworks from the top of the shrine. Sakura smiled and let out a giggle before she made it back to her friend who never noticed her disappearance.
Cultural Festival Every November 3rd, Japanese schools celebrated their culture festivals. An event that took place usually over the weekend where potential new students would go to the schools they were going to attend and check out the campus and the school. Class 1-B wanted to do a maid cafe. But sadly at Namimori Middle School all Cultural festival ideas had to go through the Disciplinary Committee to make sure no disgrace fell upon the school.
When Hibari saw that 1-B was doing a maid cafe he scoffed and approved of it. He knew Sakura was popular at the school which meant she would be dressed as one of the maids and that meant she couldn’t disgrace his school with her distasteful choices in clothing. 1-B on the other hand was very excited as first years usually struggled to get their ideas approved by Hibari. Come November third, the school was bustling with all kinds of students and parents checking out the middle school including a young man with brown hair that looked a little disheveled. There was also another student who was checking out the baseball team while a different second year was chasing students and parents alike promoting his boxing club.
Sakura on the other hand was confused as to why the whole cafe had to be closed and was left alone with Hibari in the middle of the classroom. “So because you don’t like crowds everyone had to leave so you could make sure my maid uniform looked appropriate?” she asked him. He nodded and she shook her head then smirked. She posed all cute and smiled at him asking, “Would you like some green tea sir?” in the most annoyingly sweet voice possible. Hibari’s eyebrow twitched but he was amused and refused to lose to her. “Yes, you can bring it to my office on your break” he told her leaving the exact amount of change on the table next to them. He then moved his herd out to check the other stands. Sakura puffed slightly once he left. Needless to say she did bring him that cup of tea during her break. In fact they both shared a cup before they continued on their day.
Accident It was a winter and although Sakura had not fully fixed her uniform, today she was dressed with her shirt fully buttoned and the school jacket on top. Her skirt though was still hiked up but at least she was wearing stockings underneath. Today though she was wearing little ankle boots that had a four inch block heel on them. Yuna and the princess entered the school like any other day when Sakura noticed that Hibari wasn’t there. Disappointed she headed to change her shoes and continued on her day with Yuna.
After school she was pleased to see Hibari waiting outside for her as per usual. A smile appeared on her face glad to see him there. He pulled out his Tonfas. By now it had been ritual for the two of them to spar after school. Hibari enjoyed it because Sakura put up a fight. She wasn’t weak like the other herbivores that went down with one hit. And it had been clear that they challenged each other, improved their fighting styles and soon they became very compatible fighting against one another.
Today though something happened that neither one of them expected. Sakura took off her coat because it was restricting her movements. Then they went at it once again in the center of the courtyard where they wouldn’t be a danger to other students. Sakura did a flip to land a hit on the top of Hibari’s head. Hibari blocked it with tonfa trapping her ankle in the cross of the weapons. She felt it though. She felt the metal in her legs vibrate up to her knees. She looked at him with wide eyes.
He too felt it. It was normal for him to know what it was like for bone to collide with his tonfas but this was different. It almost felt as if his Tonfas were colliding with themselves. He frowned and looked up at her. Her usually calm confident eyes were wide with fear. His expression changed to concern. He found something out he wasn’t supposed and he knew it and he knew that she knew it as well.
Sakura retreated and Hibari let her. “I’m sorry” she told him, grabbing her coat and leaving the school in a rush.
Hibari was left there dumbfounded as Kusakabe approached him. “Sir?” he questioned. “Pull everything we have on Yakumo Sakura” he ordered. “Right away” the second in command said and left.
Cherry Blossom Princess Hibari was sitting at his desk looking over budgets for the clubs when there was a knock on his door. “Come in” he ordered as he flipped through the papers. Kusakabe entered, shutting the main office door behind him. “You asked about first year Yakumo Sakura?” he reminded him. Hibari put his file down and looked up at his second in command. Kusakabe handed the folder over to Hibari and Hibari opened it to read it.
First year, Class 1-B Yakumo Sakura 12 years old, Birth Date March 21st. Blood type AB 196 cm, 54kg, Favorite color soft pink, prefers green and white teas Heiress to the Yakumo Yakuza Known among the Yakuza as a princess, due to her young age and keen business aspects Namichu rank 7, rank 1 among the men at Namichu, part of track team Likes to sing and dance.
Hibari turned the page in the folder. His eyes widened as he read the history of this girl. The crash at nine years old. The trips in and out of the hospital for two years. She has studied karate, tae kwon do, gymnastics, and several other martial arts. Then he noticed the doctor’s footnotes and he looked up at Kusakabe. “These medical records are from Namimori hospital?” he asked. “Yes sir.”
Hibari turned the page again and saw the x rays from when she was nine years old. The shattered bones of a child that was protected and loved by her father. He kept leafing through the x rays all the way up until he saw the latest ones. He saw the titanium metal that was mixed in the outline of bone.
That metal explained why he felt that clang of metal against his tonfas earlier that day. A smirk appeared across his face. This girl suddenly seemed so interesting. Hibari wanted to acquire such a rare find indeed to have on the committee. It would be better to have her on his side then continue fighting against her quirky ways. “Tetsuya I’ll be keeping an eye on Yakumo,” he said closing the folder and putting it away. “I do believe she prefers to be called by her first name sir.” he stated. Hibari looked up at him and frowned before he quietly scoffed and headed out for a patrol.
Secret The first snow of winter had arrived just before the winter break. Sakura could feel the cold in her legs. Oftentimes it left her aching and hurting to walk. Today the pain was especially bad. She had asked Kai to make a doctor’s appointment after school. This cold winter day Sakura actually wore her uniform properly, something that pleased Hibari.
He approached both Sakura and Yuna. Scared Yuna hid slightly behind Sakura. But Sakura wasn’t feeling well and it showed in her attitude. “What is it Hibari?” the Yakuza leader snapped at him. His nose twitched. “I wanted to commend you for wearing the uniform properly.” Sakura nodded. “And I wanted to inform you that if you continue to wear your uniform properly there may be a spot on the committee for you” he shared showing her the red arm band. Sakura’s eyes widened as she looked at this item. A little part of her did want it and to be on the same committee as her crush. “I think I can manage that,” she muttered. Hibari nodded pleased with that answer. He turned to walk away. Sakura walked with Yuna besides her. But her pace was slow. “You okay?” Yuna asked, concerned. “Yeah. you know this weather really throws me off” She reminded her friend.
Yuna stared at her. “I’m worried Sakura, last time you were like this your legs gave out and you had to go to the hospital for a week” she commented. Sakura shook her head. “I already had Kai make me an appointment for after school I just need to last the day.” she said softly as she struggled to walk to the front of the school. Yuna was about to protest and tell her friend to call Kai right away but instead she found herself calling for her friend instead. Sakura fell forward, passing out from the intense pain.
Hibari was not far when he heard the scream of a voice he knew. He turned around to see the girl that had been challenging him since the beginning of the school year. His eyes widened before he called his men to get an ambulance and keep the students moving. After all it was still a regular day at the school. Hibari himself went over to Sakura and checked on her. Yuna was slightly freaked out. “You’re her friend right?” he demanded as he picked Sakura up off the ground. Yuna pulled out her cell phone to call Kai as Hibari took Sakura to the infirmary.
A trip to the hospital by ambulance Two surgeries Six weeks of rehab
The winter break had started by the time Sakura had gotten out of the hospital. Yuna had been the first person to visit her outside of the hospital. But to Sakura’s surprise was the gift she got when she got home. On her bed was a small box and a letter. Kai had said it was dropped off by a small group of young men with dated haircuts.
Sakura opened the letter first. It was from Hibari who was wishing her well and telling her that he expected to see her next spring. There was a date on the letter. The date was two weeks before the semester was supposed to start. Her eyebrows furrowed together and she turned her attention to the box. Carefully she opened it and saw the badge. Her eyes widened and she blushed then took out the badge and giggled a typical school girl giggle.

Ishida Akira (Yakumo/Kikuhiko) x Hayashibara Megumi (Miyokichi)
Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/karice.wordpress.com/2017/01/07/p554/amp/
Interview and text: Maeda Hisashi
—The two of you have acted together on many different shows, beginning with Slayers where to you played Lina and Xellos, and Neon Genesis Evangelion where you were Ayanami Rei and Nagisa Kaworu. How did you feel when you found out that you would be acting together in this show?
Ishida: When I found out that Hayashibara-san would be my counterpart, I was like “Oh boy, what a frightening partner…” In a variety of ways.
Hayashibara: What’s this? Where? And how come? …like this, you mean? (chuckles)
Ishida: Oh, no no (chuckles). As everyone is well aware, you’re an incredible actor, right? Such a person is probably strict with themselves, and also with those acting beside them. At least, that’s what I figured.
Hayashibara: “That’s what I figured”…could you make sure that’s in large, bold font? (chuckles)
Ishida: Like, should I try to fake it, with my level of ability, you’d see right through me. You’d see through me no matter what I did, so I put myself on guard right from the start.
Hayashibara: Say what?!
Ishida: It’s especially true for this anime, but even for the other shows we’ve worked on together, I’ve always thought that you’re someone who makes the people you are acting with rather tense, no matter what the atmosphere of the studio seems like on the surface.
Hayashibara: Is that so…how interesting!
Ishida: “There’s so much pressure just in the fact that I have to do rakugo…and on top of that, I’ll be working with Yamadera (Kouichi)-san and Hayashibara-san, huh? Good heavens…” That’s pretty much what it felt like (chuckles).
Hayashibara: As for me, I was offered the part only after Yamadera-san, Ishida-san and Seki (Tomokazu)-kun had all been confirmed. So somewhere in the back of my mind, I feel that, if it hadn’t been you and Yamadera-san in those roles, then it probably wouldn’t have been me either. I’m not sure what it is, perhaps the balance of our voices, or our mentalities, or perhaps the wavelength we’re on, or our bonds in our previous lives (chuckles), but we just match, somehow. It was the same when I did Cowboy Bebop. Ishizuka (Unshō)-san and Yamadera-san were chosen first, and then I came in as the voice between them.
—After you started recording, could you tell us about what you sensed and took from each other’s acting?
Ishida: It was like Miyokichi was moving the story along at my pace, in a good way. Or perhaps, I felt that it was good that they met when the story was moving along. And just as I was becoming comfortable with the atmosphere of the studio where we were recording Rakugo Shinjuu, Kikuhiko was becoming comfortable with Miyokichi—this is probably something that men tend to do, but it felt a bit like a part of me was standing somewhat above her, looking down on her. I’m really glad that there was such an overlap, where the way that my character became familiar with his partner reflected my own experience in the studio.
Hayashibara: As for me, rather than being able to ‘take from’ Ishida-san’s acting, it was all I could do to try and grasp who Miyokichi was. I’m sure that Ishida-san and Yamadera-san both struggled with and spent a lot of time thinking about their own characters as well, but from my perspective, they were already Kiku-san and Sukeroku through and through. Just how could I slip into the space between them as Miyokichi? I wasted a lot of time during the recordings for the first half of the series trying to figure that out.
____Was Miyokichi a difficult character to play?
Hayashibara: Just the other day, I saw the latest episode on TV, and even then I found myself reflecting a little, like “Oh dear, was this correct…?” Which is really unusual for me (chuckles). There’s a line where Miyokichi says “I’m stupid, so…” but what I took from it was “This girl is no idiot, is she?” How much of that is just her acting out the part, and how much of it is real idiocy? It was pretty difficult treading the fine line between the two. And Kiku-san probably loves that idiocy in the way that a man loves “a woman who is just a little more broken than he is.” Whatever he says, he sees through the way she acts and what he finds on the other side, he loves even more. Or something like that. In playing Miyokichi, I was caught between the two (acting vs. real idiocy). It was in that episode 9 scene with Sukeroku that she finally settled on one side. That line of “Did something happen? I’ll hear you out…”—at first, I was directed to play it more listlessly, as if I’d lost everything. But Kubota Haruko-sensei, the mangaka, was actually at the studio when we recording that episode, and she said: “That line actually represents the point where she starts taking her revenge.” With that, the direction changed again, and I thought to myself “She really is no idiot.” It was then that I finally felt I’d grasped Miyokichi, just a little. Nevertheless, I honestly believe that there are points where her actions are motivated purely because she’s in love, and it’s precisely because she’s a woman who’s almost impossible to grasp that Kiku-san, too, is captivated by her. That’s right, a woman that Kiku-san would really fall in love with—just what kind of woman is that? In pondering that very question, I definitely used parts of my brain that I’d never used before. …hey Kiku-san, what exactly do you love about Miyokichi? (chuckles)
Ishida: (chuckles) Well, if I pick up the thread from what Hayashibara-san has just said, then Kiku has probably never thought that Miyokichi was an idiot. He knows that she’s someone who has used a range of wiles to survive, to get to where she is now. And because he sees her in this way, what he feels for her for her isn’t the kind of romantic love held by the average, modern high schooler who’s in love with his or her classmate. But when she’s there beside him, he finds himself responding to her allure. He’s a pitiful guy, after all. In that way, he lets himself be influenced by her, but at the same time, he’s cooly looking at himself, saying “This isn’t romantic love.” And he probably thinks of himself, of this person looking on so cooly, as “a real slime-ball,” too. But he is simply unable to throw away that feeling of comfort that he gets by being by her side. He’s a weak guy…or rather, an unfair one. In episode 8, he gets angry when he comes back from the regional tour and sees Sukeroku and Miyokichi in an embrace, doesn’t he? Personally, I don’t think he was that angry, not really (chuckles), but I also kind of understand why he was upset. Even though he didn’t regard himself as being in love, he gets irritated at the thought of parting with her. So, I also have to reflect on my performance, just like Hayashibara-san. That scene where Kiku says “I am (being a man). This is the greatest lie of my life”—when we recorded it, I went into the scene taking those words quite literally. But now that I think about it, it’s not like Kikuhiko was prepared to keep their relationship going—that kind of thought was probably in the back of his head, too. Hence, I’m sure that those words that he said to Sukeroku were, at some level, a lie aimed at deceiving himself as well.
Hayashibara: There are so many emotions on the other side of “I love you” that we no longer know which of them are right and which of them are wrong. In particular, in the middle part of the show, I felt like I was waiting for the directors’ guidance with regards to what was coming out of me naturally at that time. But if we think about it, that’s what real romantic love is like. It’s not like you’re reading out a love letter that expresses everything clearly in a set number of words. The attitude your partner takes at any particular point also changes the words you use, and it’s not as if it will play out the way you have planned. In that sense, even those elements of my performance that I thought may have been incorrect, may have been right as far as results go—I’ve been trying to think about it along those lines without trying to justify myself. Beyond that, all that remains is to leave it up to the viewers to decide how they feel about it.
—How do the two of you perceive Sukeroku?
Ishida: He’s someone who is real to the bone, with no artifice.
Hayashibara: Yup, I’m with you there. And that’s why he gets messed up (chuckles). Miyokichi envied him, just because he and Kiku-san got along too well. Something may have happened in Manchuria as well, but she simply has no interest in a guy who foolishly tries to woo her, so openly, too, despite knowing that she’s his master’s mistress (chuckles). In the end, a man like Kiku-san is more appealing to her—someone who fights to restrain himself, thinking “I can’t touch her because she’s my master’s,” but who gradually loses that fight and lays his hands on her. Hence, if Kiku-san hadn’t gotten involved with her, I don’t think she would have taken any interest in Sukeroku.
—And that did not change even after she took him back to her hometown?
Hayashibara: Because this was her revenge. But since Sukeroku just has so much warmth about him, I think that being with him may have felt comfortable to her. In that sense, she may have felt at times that he was causing her to forget (what she wanted). With Kiku-san, he’s so cold that she feels that she has to warm him up, but Sukeroku is just warm, unconditionally warm. Like the stomach of a golden retriever (chuckles). That kind of warm, comfortable feeling.
Ishida: I think that Kikuhiko has always been frustrated and envious of how Sukeroku found success with his completely different way of living, but if you ask me whether he felt something particular when he saw Sukeroku and Miyokichi’s together, then I suspect that he probably didn’t. In fact, given that he was, at that time, thinking that it wouldn’t be a good idea to keep dragging things out with Miyokichi in that way, it was like a godsend to him. Not that he’d say it, but I suspect that he probably felt something along the lines of “Thank you for creating the opportunity for me to break up with her.”
—As for Kikuhiko and Sukeroku, it was like they had a shared fate through rakugo, but it was ripped apart because of Miyokichi. How have you interpreted that aspect of the story?
Ishida: Kiku probably wouldn’t have ever imagined that, as a result of him dumping Miyokichi, that she would move to the countryside with Sukeroku. And there’s no way he would ever have wanted such an outcome.
Hayashibara: But if I look at it not from Miyokichi’s perspective but simply as a viewer, whether Miyokichi had been there or not, I feel that it would have been difficult for Sukeroku to continue doing rakugo in Tokyo. He would probably have distanced himself from Kiku-san, don’t you think?
Ishida: I suspect that Kikuhiko probably didn’t think of such a possibility. Sukeroku was getting a lot of backlash because of what he was doing, what he was aiming for, and a lot of problems were arising as a result. But fans were also full of praise for for his amazing performances. Hence, whilst it would have been best if Sukeroku did not cause any problems, but if he did, then Kikuhiko intended to continue backing him up. And I think there still was quite a way to go before he ran out of patience.
Hayashibara: I see…then Miyo-chan did indeed take Sukeroku away… That girl really is no idiot. The “revenge” that Kumota-sensei spoke about was that very act.

Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga 5 | SGRS: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen 5 | Nanbaka 18 | ACCA 4 | Classicaloid 17 | Morose Mononokean 1 - 2
The idea from now on: Once all 2016 shows are done (rewatches or not), expect the 2016 ranking.
Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga 5
You could see Shura’s pink phone in her back pocket. Hopefully, she doesn’t bum dial anyone…
One of the problems of this (part of the) show is its heavy reliance on flashbacks, since the original series was in 2011 (or 12?).
That’s what happens when you have an impulsive guy like Rin, I guess. Custody. (Partially joking.) Sometimes a pep talk is all you need to get back up though.
I can make out some of the hiragana and (maybe?) a minami (south), but otherwise I’m pretty lost on that cursive script too.
With a proper look at the right side of the letter, I can indeed make out “Okumura Rin”.
I just realised – Torako (tiger child) and Tatsuma (judging by the “tatsu”, it likely has something to do with dragons). It’s tiger vs dragon!
How is this letter even relevant to the current day, aside from the tale of Ryuji?
You subbers make me sic! (LOL.) The word is “disastrous” – remember that.
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: Sukeroku Futatabi-hen 5
Whoa. Sukeroku’s eyes were red!
I thought it was Yakumo’s ashtray Yota was talking about. Turns out it’s his bento.
Ah, the magic of technology. Yota knows it.
The Amakentei from season 1, episode 1. It’s still here after all these years.
There’s a creepy picture of a man in the back. Probably a photo.
Noxy stereo, LOL.
Note for later: Kajikazawa was the name of the story Yakumo did when he got enraged by Yota.
I thought Yakumo would be furious about the carp. Turns out he’s not. The Yakumo name bit made me laugh because that’s such a Yota thing to do.
“Atashi”? Did I hear Yota say “atashi”?
Hangon-ko is so spellbinding…
Hikobayuru is beautiful as always.
I-I’m crying right now. The preview basically is implying Yakumo’s…dead.
Nanbaka 18
Was that hit really that hard?
I think they skipped a line of the subs?
Oh, “the tall guy” is Qi.
What’s the name of this black/blue haired guy in the first place?
…but the staff was broken before…?
Ruka is apparently a kappa according to earlier comments, so him in the water makes sense somewhat.
Wow. Futamata-sensei really likes Chinese stuff.
Strangely, Uno has a point.
The Gojyousan underground cell. Of course it had to be called after Ruka. Plus the goroawase would definitely mean it has 5 levels.
How did Uno identify Trois and Honey by one middle finger? The nail polish and style of the nails, I guess.
*cue dramatic music* It’s a cliffhanger! (Dangit.)
ACCA 4
Walnut…cookies? Can’t tell what that “walnut” really is since it only appears for a second.
Seriously, who is Nino calling?
I think a captain’s hat like the one that guy was wearing makes people look silly.
There’s a lot of English in this theme song. Except for the autotune, the song suits this show perfectly.
I only just realised Jean has some buttons shaped like the letter H.
Man, having the freedom to decide your own schedule is nice.
Pentagonal table, eh? Not even “Knights of the Round Cross” exist here?
Jazz sounds and xylophones really suit this show.
Satsuei? I forgot what that means. Update: It means “to take a picture of someone”, although it appears to be a noun.
There’s even ACCA desktop wallpapers. I want one.
Interesting to note Beurre uses the word kuni (country) for Suitsu, which was subbed as “place” (“It’s a wonderful place!”). This just shows exactly how much autonomy there is for ACCA’s districts.
I don’t think I questioned it yet, but why is this guy called Biscuit? By the audio, it sounds like he’s called “Bisuke” and not “Bisuketto”.
Keitai denwa = mobile phone.
It’s like the French Revolution. Not that I’ve studied anything on that revolution, but eh. Coldplay’s Liberty Leading the People and all that.
Gag rule. I didn’t know what it meant specifically, but it kind of explained itself.
Jean has such a baby face and gangly neck that it’s easy to think he’s an example of what TV Tropes call “Noodle People”.
Classicaloid 17
I think the word Motz uses is oishii, but I’ve never seen it translated as “delish!” before.
It’s grilled mikan, technically. Didn’t I say that last time?
I got no Google hits on “yaki mikan” or “grilled mikan” that were relevant.
Welp, this seems to be set in Japanese winter. Or else you wouldn’t be seeing mikan (or colds) at all.
Did Cho-chan just do an extensive burn on Sousuke? That’s gotta hurt!
The hallways in blue light at that angle…it’s kinda creepy, due to what the staff put in the next ep preview…I’m actually so scared, I have a lump in my throat…
How did you communicate with Hasshie, Cho-chan? *laughs anyway*
The fact the subs go (verb verber verbing verb!) is hilarious.
It’s a flippin’ zombie apocalypse! I tried to do one of those (not as crazy as this) in one of my stories and needless to say, I utterly failed! *weeps* *stops weeping* Well, back to work.
What would Cho-chan say if he got infected?
Aloe vera? (Why and how did I know that pot contained aloe vera?)
What? Okay, that’s (Schu and Beethes having citrus heads) just plain weird.
O-Okay. So they basically made “Thriller” to the tune of a march…?! *bursts out laughing* That’s the most ridiculous they’ve gotten so far. I don’t love it because it made me sick to the stomach, but honestly, that’s the most original idea I’ve seen in ages!
The prospect of a pineapple zombie invasion though…urgh. I do not want.
I see no Google hints whatsoever about mikan being grown in Turkey.
Wasn’t it Einstein who said “success is 1% talent and 99% perspiration” or something like that?
(Morose Mononokean ep 1)
Why did I pick this show, you ask? It’s pretty obvious, right? It’s appealing to the eyes.
There’s something extremely iyashikei about this show, even if it’s also a supernatural show.
Why is no one wearing yellow except Ashiya?
…and the ol’ “problem with buttshots” comes right back from Bungou Stray Dogs. What is it with people and butts?
“I can’t stand it!” – Considering you’re not able to stand, it’s pretty obvious, Ashiya.
Why a giant fuzzball acts like a dog? Beats me.
My allegiance for the lil’ fuzzball started from episode 1, as you can probably tell. One episode is all I need sometimes.
“…to collect your debt.”
Hanae is a feminine name, normally.
His face when he saw that it was Abeno was…hilarious!
Is that youkai a (subtle) 4th wall breaker?
The ED is so pretty. It evolves too, which must be a pain in the butt for the animators but it’s pleasing to the eyes.
(ep 2)
“I can totally see them now.” – Okay, not many boys speak like that. Girls, maybe, but boys? No. (That is, if we’re talking about the phase where suddenly speech is littered with at least 20% more “like”s than usual.)
Of course, nobody questions the spraying of spontaneous flowers in the OP.
ESP doesn’t do that.
Being possessed by mutant pine cones really does take its toll on Ashiya.
Cyclops pine cones? Probably creepy if they’re all staring at once.
Turtle emblem, even though the maker is a newt.
Mutant pine cones never looked so adorable, especially when picked up by the “scruff of the neck”. Abeno basically tossed the little guy he held.
Doesn’t make much difference regardless of if you call the parasite shrub “incurable disease” or “curse”.
Notice how formal both Abeno and the big Scree are.
It’s not quite explained how the Screes learnt the guys’ names.

Note
Well then, I guess my nickname can be Anime Anon BECAUSE SAME. Like it'/ hard keeping track of languages when you watch anime but listen to kpop at the same time =_= So wait, what's your current favourite anime? I just finished "Servamp" and i am SHOOK
i’ve nevER HEARD OF SERVAMP BUT I WILL SEARCH IT UP
and well actually, hm. i like manga a lot more because there usually tends to be a lot more plot development, etc. in it but uhh okay, I’ll just list some of my favorite manga that i know have become animes (though i may not have necessarily watched them all, lmfao asdfd):
deadman wonderland all the fucking way. holy shit. fave af. didn’t watch the anime, though, and don’t plan to since I can’t fare well with all that gore. b&w is a lot easier to deal with (though i can’t say i sit well with all of the graphic depictions of severed limbs, etc., but it’s a lot better when they’re not done in color). i love love love the characters, though not so much the lead (ganta); the side characters–i feel–are far more fascinating. i have no idea how far the anime goes but i really fucking loved the chapters that covered hummingbird/peacock/that old man (fuck i forgot his name)’s backstories ugasdhf and then i really (strangely) enjoyed the backstory of mockingbird and the final chapter was just a blessing. serious trigger warnings, though, if the title didn’t give much away already rip
orange is also really good and i only just recently found it that it became an anime. as in like, a few days ago. but i remember reading the manga and just asijfdkasdfids anticipating the updates and then the final chapter got me in dem feels :’) i love it. so much. it’s so refreshingly different from typical shoujo, too, and i love how they threw in the whole time travel thing in there which was like lowkey angsty the entire time but also it was like !! there is salvation!! (no that was not a spoiler but it is a source of stress and many tears). also, for anyone thinking of watching/reading this, gonna throw out (another) trigger warning out there.
soul eater is like lowkey my childhood bUT only lowkey though because i didn’t really start getting into it until like middle school LOL but then i got obsessed and watched the anime like 1239 times and then i was like oh hey manga is a thing! and i kinda read it, though it was confusing for me because the anime/manga splinter a bit so there isn’t exactly a clear, 100% cutoff from where the anime ends and the manga continues (i would explain more but then there would be spoilers). in any case, maka is literally queen as fuck and soul is such a slimy dork lmfAOOOASDF i love their dynamic for some reason so much??? but anyways the action anD THE WORLD HOL YSHIT I LOVE THE WORLD OF SOUL EATER like the dwma sounds like such a fucking cool place to study at, and the idea of some students being able to turn into weapons like ?!!?! sign me up
one piece, holy shit one piece leeemmmmeee tell you, yes, i may be basic af listing this one but ALSO ITS SO ASDIFJ I LOVE ODA’S LIKE WORLD BUILDING THING and also he’s a really funny guy. this was my obsession for a while but then i got too bored waiting for the next episode to come out (broh–listen. thursdays used to be my day because that’s when the next subbed episode would get released and i just asdfjiasdf). in any case, i just love it a lot and i’m still highkey married to zoro listen and perona’s devil fruit is literally like a++ idk why i like it so much but i just do and it’s so funny and wowoowow yes it’s long as fuck but it’s so fucking worth it and random fact: i actually started watching right in the middle of the thriller bark arc, and then after i got completely caught up i started jumping around earlier episodes until i’d watched (basically) all of them. granted, it was kinda confusing at first, but i’d do it again LOL
naruto because, like, dude, this shit’s a classic. i watched a lot of naruto when i was a kid, and then later on when i was super into anime i watched a lot of naruto shippuden (come to think of it, i don’t remember much of the original naruto. it was so long ago). i really liked the pain arc, it was so painfully feelsy and ughghasdfds and kakashi sensei and also i have not really caught up but i should because my fav character is gaara and i need to watch all the gaara episodes um but also highkey i have read the final two chapters and the first two chapters of boruto wow i love to spoil the stories for myself a lot a++ @ me lmfao (what am i saying help??)
gekkan shoujo to nozaki-kun becauSE LMFAO i relate to sakura bit too hard, and overall this shit is like, legit the funniest ever. there isn’t a lot of romance (or at least, not as much as one would expect from a shoujo) but the comedy factor makes up for it 1000000%. i love it. i don’t know what else to say but basically it’s kind of like a series of interrelated crackshots that revolve around a certain group of characters and it kind of fleshes out their relationships in the most hysterical way i lov it. i haven’t watched the anime yet, though, but i would love to sometime soon asjidf
durarara!! is love because in addition to being married to zoro, i am also in a committed (??!?!?) relationship with izaya because holy shit he’s such a little sly shit and i love him. i’ve watched about half the anime and read a bit of drrrr! and i love celty, simon is bae, and and and yeah i also don’t have much else to say about it. if you don’t know much about it, it’s basically about this (strange as fuck) city and these seemingly unrelated groups of people in it (ie the black Russian sushi dude who hands out flyers on the streets, high school students, an information broker, a headless motorcyclist) and how certain incidents connect them
mekakucity actors though it’s probably a bit hard to understand for people who didn’t know the vocaloid series it stemmed off from. but in any case, it’s kind of similar to durarara in which it’s basically how a group of seemingly unrelated people are connected to each other, but it’s more central in that rather than certain events, it’s just one, major danger and the fact that they all have a certain power to them. trigger warning on this one, though. it’s sad, agh, though the anime has a happier ending than the official ending for the vocaloid series (and probably the manga–i haven’t read it, so i don’t know). if you ever need someone to explain things to you, i got ya.
black rock shooter (the anime) is pretty good and it’s kind of different in that it does have a manga (several versions, in fact) but the anime has its very own storyline (and interpretation of the characters and their various relationships). there are even several oc’s introduced that are major players in the plot, and i found that really interesting (though i preferred one of the manga versions more, which is listed below). there’s actually no like… realistic depiction of blood (it’s like… blue) and i appreciate that, though some parts can come off as a bit… deranged. either way, i really enjoy these types of storylines haisf and brs is badass, i’ll tell you that.
i have a lot more but i can’t think of any at the moment D:
as for mangas that are not animes (as far as i am aware), I’d also want to rec these (* = possible trigger):
money is life*
kakegurui
shinrei tantei yakumo-kun*
black rock shooter: innocent soul*
koisuru harinezumi
nickelodeon*
I’d def go into detail in explaining these as well, but this post already seems long enough so maybe i’ll save that for another day :’))
(but they are literally so fucking good aoisjdfsdf)

"Code Vein" Producer & Director Discuss the Creation of a Harrowing New Action-RPG
One of the major highlights of Crunchyroll Expo was getting a chance to speak with Hiroshi Yoshimura and Keita Iizuka, the respective director and producer of Code Vein. For those who haven't seen it yet, Code Vein is a post-apocalyptic action-RPG from the folks who brought us the God Eater series. As we learned from their panel and the following interview, however, what they're crafting this time around is a different beast entirely.
Joseph Luster: First, I'd like to ask how you're enjoying Crunchyroll Expo so far?
Yoshimura: I'm really impressed by all the cosplayers, and how many people in America love anime. That's what's made it the most fun.
Iizuka: Since everyone else is having fun, it's really easy to relax and have fun with them.
What was the starting point for Code Vein conceptually? Was it the style of gameplay or the story that set everything in motion?
Yoshimura: It really started with developing the world of Code Vein, and then deciding what kind of genre of game would match with that world better. That's how we came to the conclusion that it should be a dungeon-crawling RPG.
Code Vein sets itself apart from others in the genre not just with its visuals, but with its heavy focus on vampires (Revenants). Was there anything in particular you drew inspiration from for the characters and setting?
Yoshimura: We really wanted to focus on the action and decide what kind of human character we could have in the post-apocalyptic world of Code Vein. We decided that going with something like a vampire would match the story and the atmosphere of the game.
You mentioned the game consisting of Revenants and The Lost, both of which used to be human. Are there any actual humans remaining in the world of Vein, or is that something you want to leave as a surprise?
Yoshimura: There are a few. You might find them in the game, but there aren't very many.
Iizuka: The Revenants require human blood to live, so if there were no humans they wouldn't be able to.
That makes sense! Iizuka-san pointed out Yakumo as his favorite character. Other than being "a cool and nice guy" and an "ikemen" (basically a hot dude), what do you think is the secret to making a memorable game protagonist that players want to follow from beginning to end?
Iizuka: Because they lost their memories when they turned from human to Revenant, the kind of journey they go on in the game and the way they develop through the story is what really makes the characters memorable.
Was there a specific character design that made you feel you were on the right track with the game, and if so… was it Mia?
Yoshimura: Mia was actually the first character we designed for the game. Even from the beginning we had her concept kind of decided and knew what kind of character she was going to be. So that helped set the role for the rest of the characters.
"Russian Hat Girl."
Yoshimura: (Laughs) Yes!
Judging from the designs and artwork you revealed during your panel, it looks like you're aiming for a variety of expressions in Code Vein's characters, which is unique for such a bleak setting. Are we going to see the characters reacting to the world around them in many different ways?
Yoshimura: Overall the world is still pretty bleak and terrible, but as the characters go through it there will be flashbacks to their time as a human. And since you're traveling with your companion throughout the game, you'll see the relationship between the two characters, and they'll start, you know, playing games with each other and joking around, which will kind of lighten the mood of the game and lead to those everyday reactions.
The style of Code Vein is really unique, especially when so many other games in the genre play it safe in that regard. Were you concerned at all with limiting your potential audience, or do you think its anime aesthetic is a key aspect of its appeal?
Iizuka: While creating the game we were really going for the overall experience rather than just the image or just the story, and so as a result the gameplay mixed with the aesthetic mixed with the world-building is really what led to the final product. So, we don't think it will be a problem.
Yoshimura: The gameplay is exciting regardless of the image the characters have, so if you're into this kind of genre… even when we were playing the prototype we had problems clearing the first level. We think the difficulty of the game and the dynamics of the gameplay are going to draw people more than the image.
I was reading a bit—and you also discussed it at the panel—about the Partner system in Code Vein. Can you elaborate on that concept and how it came about?
Yoshimura: Compared to other games in the genre, we thought having another character helping out and making the gameplay more dynamic in that sense would make the game more unique and more appealing. When we originally started working on the game, the support characters were intended to be temporary, but we realized adding that character brings a new dynamic to the main character's personality and to the story. The two characters can build up the courage together to overcome the obstacles ahead of them and develop that relationship as the game goes on.
Did you experiment at all with the possibility of introducing online co-op with the Partner system?
Iizuka: We know other games of the same genre do have that kind of co-op play, but because of the way the story is built and the way the partner characters change based on how you actually play the game, it's kind of difficult to have an AI-controlled character that's thinking about how you're playing compared to a human character who's going to play their own way. As a result, we didn't think it was a good idea.
Yeah, it might not have been as dramatic.
Many games try to go for the difficult Dark Souls-like action-RPG, but they lose sight of the purpose and simply make them difficult with little nuance. How do you go about balancing a game like Code Vein to make it rewarding, engaging, and evenly difficult?
Yoshimura: We know those games are difficult, and this game is just as difficult, but we designed it so it wouldn't be the type of game that makes you want to give up if you fail. You can customize your character in different ways at any time, even when playing the game, and even if you come up to a particularly hard boss or a portion of the game that's especially difficult, there are multiple routes to tackle this obstacle. If one way doesn't work, you can come back and try a different way, which keeps the game more engaging.
We designed it to be difficult, while still being a game that anyone could complete.
Action-RPGs like this, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne are known for their bosses, and the intense challenges they add to the experience. Is this a focus in Code Vein, as well?
Yoshimura: (in English) Yes. (laughs)
The bosses are incredibly difficult, but they're designed with the Partner system in mind, so you can cooperate with the AI to finish all the bosses. Basically, if your partner dies it's going to be impossible to finish on your own.
You've been working on a running series with the God Eater games, and now you have something fresh to play with. What's the best part about starting from scratch?
Yoshimura: Working on something from scratch is especially exciting, because we're making something the world has never seen before. It isn't like anything else, even if it is in a similar genre to something else. It really changes the dynamics of the team working on it, so for the first time in a long time some of the team members got a little spicy and started fighting with each other (laughs).
A lot of passion.
Yoshimura: Yes.
God Eater has expanded well beyond its initial scope as far as media is concerned. Do you see similar potential as a multimedia project in Code Vein?
Iizuka: Definitely. But if it's successful, we want it to be successful for being Code Vein, so we want people to know Code Vein the way it is.
The world of Vein is post-apocalyptic, so I have to ask what your favorite post-apocalyptic media is. It can be anything from movies to games, manga, and so on.
Yoshimura: I like Daybreakers, which is a post-apocalyptic movie that's also about vampires. I like that, even though both Code Vein and Daybreakers are similar as far as post-apocalyptic setting is concerned, they're both completely unique from each other.
Iizuka: I like The Walking Dead, because the zombies have destroyed everything, so it's interesting to see the human drama of how the humans are fighting against the zombies, as well as fighting against other humans or trying to work with other humans to make the world better, or at least reclaim it.
Yoshimura: I like The Walking Dead, too (laughs). Overall we really like the post-apocalyptic genre.
What classic games do you look to for inspiration, and were there any specific titles that made you want to develop video games in the first place?
Yoshimura: Probably Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, and The Legend of Zelda had the most influence on me.
Iizuka: Mega Man was one of the main influences, but I also like classic RPGs like Final Fantasy and Romancing SaGa.
Are there any current studios or titles other than your own that you particularly admire?
Yoshimura: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is probably one of my favorite games ever. When I played it I could feel myself trembling from how excited I was.
Yeah, I think many people had that reaction.
Yoshimura: Great game.
Iizuka: The most recent Resident Evil game (Resident Evil 7), especially the virtual reality portions of it, was super engaging.
I was too nervous to play the VR version.
Iizuka: It's scary!
We're at Crunchyroll Expo, so I have to ask: Favorite anime of all time?
Yoshimura: Number one?! Hmmmm…
It maybe doesn't have to be number one, just a favorite, or a few favorites.
Yoshimura: As far as classic anime goes, Urusei Yatsura is one of my favorites. For more recent anime, I really liked Kill la Kill.
Iizuka: I really like Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell, and other anime in the near-future genre, just because it's a future that might actually exist, which is kind of exciting to watch.
Yoshimura: We both picked Mamoru Oshii titles.
The Kill la Kill answer may have covered this, but are you watching any current anime?
Yoshimura: I watch My Hero Academia, and I'm looking forward to Black Clover.
Iizuka: I watched Tokyo Ghoul and the most recent Gundam, because I like more difficult stories.

Erased 6 – 13 (not including the digest) | Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu 1 - 4 | Eldlive 1 | Prince of Stride: Alternative 1
The idea from now on for SGRS: Expect first time watches for this show (for the second season) and don’t expect ratings after each ep. Once all 2016 shows are done (rewatches or not), expect the 2016 ranking.
The idea from now on for POSA: Once all 2016 shows are done (rewatches or not), expect the 2016 ranking.
(ep 6)
Even with only subs, you can hear the seriousness in the manager’s voice.
Asagi beer, LOL.
This speech bubble style really works in the camera angles’ favour.
Airi’s mother reminds me of Midoriya’s mum from Boku no Hero Academia.
Shinji-go. “Go”… I didn’t really know how to explain it so I let Wiktionary do it for me.
I really love Airi’s motivational quotes around this point. So much, that I used it as motivation all through 2016…although I didn’t get any great results from it…
(ep 7)
Okay, that scrolling scene with the kids…that’s just cheap. They aren’t even animated.
It says something like “Preserve water” or “Water is important” on the wall behind the tap.
That “stand out in the hallways with those buckets” is pretty typical for an anime. I wonder whether any real Japanese person has done that, though?
Oh yeah. I think I was initially attracted to this due to the fact it looks a lot like Detective Conan when you see Satoru negotiating the future by changing his past.
I think I had to learn what a “patsy” meant for this scene, but a patsy is just a substitute, specifically in this case for collateral damage.
Does that mean Kenya lived (or lives) in a big house?
(ep 8)
Wait – wait? How did Gaku know how Kayo was safe…unless he was the murderer? I didn’t question that the first time, but this just makes the ending even worse. This dude’s already proved he doesn’t act on compulsion like Satoru does, so that adds to it.
That joke about Satoru being 29 does get a bit worn out when it gets used here…
Mt. Hakodate…I’d heard of it from Touken Ranbu. It’s a good place for low level swords, IIRC.
POP Noodle, LOL.
Crying in media is much more emotional if you can hear the crying, unfortunately. That’s why I passed on “Kayo’s first homecooked meal” for the Crunchyroll Awards.
(ep 9)
Akemi’s (Kayo’s mother’s) eyes were so off model before the shovel scene, it made it hard to take Akemi seriously.
It’s weird how much Gaku looks like he should be Satoru’s dad.
Akemi was “Takashima” before she was “Hinazuki”, and her partner’s name at the time of her divorce was Kazuo.
CGI car…again. Geez.
I think the kanji for “closure” mean the ending curtain, like that of a play, but I can’t quite remember their literal meaning…
“I have to stop somewhere.”
Gaku’s talking about his experiences somehow reminds me of a chat I had with Elucida on the Boueibu chat. Probably because the instigator of the chat had to apologise…
I wonder if the man (Gaku) was lying about the lollies?
“I am a man.” – Translation choices make Hiromi seem a little too macho for his girly looks, haha. *cringes, because I hear emphasis on “am”, with a lesser emphasis on “man” in my head*
I just realised – Kayo won’t go to Mt Hakodate as she’s supposed to anymore…It makes me sad on the inside.
(ep 10)
Holy plays, Batman! Romeo and Juliet for an 11 year old is pretty far fetched considering I only read it when I was…um…16 or 17. I haven’t even read King Lear yet so consider me out of this. (Shucks...even though I used to be an avid reader, I’m only ordinary now, huh?)
LOL. In the end, Kenya really is a little kid, getting all offended about hideouts, haha.
I thought the “getting rid of someone’s alone time is a good thing” sentence was a bit weird until I realised what context Hiromi used it in.
“On the outs”? I didn’t know what that meant until I checked it up. Well, considering I make my own phrases up a lot and I tend to omit small words in the vein of “wut dis?”, maybe I’m just too slang for the subbers.
CGI bus? Man, you ruined the solemn mood a bit, Mr Bus.
See? These CGI cars (and truck) are why I have gripes with CGI transport. It sticks out too much. However, for something like Ajin (which can only be found in CGI form), I don’t mind it so long as everything else about it is good. Speaking of which, I still have yet to see Ajin (as of the point of typing).
“…spirit and drive.” – Because the camera focussed on Gaku’s hands just then, I had to LOL in my head a little.
Manabu = Gaku by virtue of alternate character reading. Isn’t kanji great? (sarcastic)
This sublimation, I presume? I checked it up once, but it was never of any use.
(ep 11)
The Spider’s Thread, as told by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Bungou taught me about it, but I’m not sure the Bungou instance is the one I first met it in.
This fourth wall breaking…it’s somewhat disturbing, but that’s the mood the staff were going for. Very effective.
I’ve always wondered why the “Boku” in the titlecard had a different font. Maybe the staff just didn’t have a “boku” in the font they’d written the title in…
I guess it must be my warped perception of beauty due to bishonen, but when Satoru is lying on the bed with slightly sallow cheeks, he almost looks…beautiful. (That’s a scary thought, isn’t it?)
“Future”…such a powerful name, since it happens to be the name of the baby, too.
Imagine if Kayo and Yuri Katsuki’s (Yuri!!! on Ice) backstories were stitched together.
A gingko leaf. They have a very distinctive shape…(Reminds me of Fusae Campbell from Detective Conan.)
Gaku is just represented by a black silhouette in some frames. Basically, you could call it another Detective Conan reference of sorts.
(ep 12)
The problem with the ending that I have, if you don’t know already, is that it suddenly makes you realise that Satoru would either die or have planned/have some caveat to get out of/around a potential death. Unfortunately, they don’t show you when he’s made those plans, thus being deceptive by omission if they were even made.
CGI hamster wheel…?
By the laws of ordinary protagonist writing…I give you the ending. The ending that dissatisfied me so much, it definitely left SGRS first for 2016.
They never explained how the rail was pulled open either, come to think of it.
Hey, it’s Boys’ Flight. The magazine he was reading earlier in the show. Don’t remember what ep, though.
Hey, did I ever mention to you that I tried to open up an Erased wiki, only to find one already open? There’s still two wikis existing right now for some reason, though.
Well, it’s been a wild ride. Thanks all, if you’ve been coming along with me and hope to see you again soon.
(SGRS ep 1)
Zony, LOL. Did Sony exist in that era?
If you observe the left flag when Yotaro stops at the front of the theatre, you can see the characters for “Amakentei” (rain-bamboo-stand, or something like it). That’s Kappei Yamaguchi’s character…Update: Must’ve been a mistake on my part. Amaken is a critic, but not a rakugoka himself.
Yotaro’s still got all the mannerisms of a gangster, LOL. (Including interrogation technique.)
There’s a sign in the back of Yotaro when he talks to Yakumo for the first time. It says “Sumi” (top – bottom) “Sushi” (L – R).
Yotaro uses the word “tanomu”, which is a respectful way of saying “I beg of you”. Very respectful. The most polite kind of respectful.
Mukojima? Huh? I guess that’s a deliberate bungling of Konnichiwa? (Update: Nope.) However, I’m still a noob to rakugo myself, despite having created the wiki to spread some Yakumo love.
Note for later: Shinigami has a distinctive “Ajaraka mokuren kyuraisu tegeretsuno pa!” in it.
What’s the old man writing?
It’s a transformation of sorts, from Yota being nervous to showing off what he’s got. That’s what makes SGRS so powerful.
I was pondering this since the start of the performance, but Yota’s shark-like teeth make him a very distinctive character. Then again, there’s always that one cue or other to tell you that a certain character is in the house.
Should a woman only have her beauty? I never believed it and that’s what I set out to prove in my stories, but…social mores were different back then, so I can’t speak for Konatsu.
Oh! I completely forgot about this guy (Mangetsu) until he came back in ep 14.
Notes for later: “Namu myoho renge kyo…”/a pilgrim climbing Mt Minobu
There is a slight irony in a woman telling a man to “man up”. Subbers, you put that there.
(ep 2)
Oh? Were you wondering what those “notes for later” were for? The wiki, naturally. SGRS’s only presence is me most days, so I’d better keep it up to date.
This show never fails to make me laugh, even if the laughter gets more subdued the second time.
Apparently people get sento and onsen confused a lot. Sento are normally cheaper smaller establishments compared to onsen, as far as I know.
Why is there a cat in the room?!
The “Hatsu” in Hatsutaro means “beginning”, while the “Kiku” in Kikuhiko is a chrysanthemum, so…yeah. Take it as you will.
“…your first time?” (laughs behind back) No wonder Haruko Kumota was a BL mangaka before she did SGRS.
Even without the volume, the visual language can tell you Kiku’s doing something wrong. That’s the power of this show.
“Akanbou” is a Japanese word for baby, as you may have guessed. However, people seem to use the word “aka-chan” more these days. Thus, another guess tells you that “shiro” is white and “ao” is blue. Right again.
You can almost hear the voices even with only subs! Amazing!
Fish cake. Technically called kamaboko, but “fish cake” is the translation for it so I guess I shouldn’t be such a weeb.
(ep 3)
“…it’ll become standard in the rakugo world.”
Oh, the cat is Yakumo 7th’s.
Mosquito coils? When were they invented?
CGI train? I barely noticed it there. Plus…poor Kiku. He never gets the girls.
Kagurazaka.
Were sento really cheap enough to be five coins?
(ep 4)
Do those girls count as off model?
The texture on the bricks of the restaurant are hyperrealistic…I like it. Better than that messed up CGI you get on most cars in anime these days.
Kuma -> Kumako. I wonder why.
As I’ve noted on the wiki, the pun about the samurai involves the word samui (cold). Therefore the original pun would’ve been “now you die out here in the cold, samurai”, but if you’re going for lame jokes that work seamlessly into the rakugo, then…the samu-die joke pretty much does its job.
There was the word “open” twice in one sentence…subbers, you need to proofread sometimes.
The “treasure sacks” pun is on kintama…welp, I won’t explain it, but “family jewels” apparently works just as well.
If Mukojima is a place, then why were people saying it in ep 1?
LOL, Matsuda. Going “I won’t have anything to do with this” is bound to get you in trouble nonetheless.
Yakumo’s heart is so clearly not into it. You can tell from the body language.
(Eldlive 1)
I’m here because I fell out of love with Hibari a while back and I need to give Akira Amano another chance. Also, Lane Brick…maybe.
Wait. It’s a Mukuro! With glasses! That foreshadows the pain I’m gonna be in for.
Welp, considering I read the manga this was adapted from not too long ago (as of the time of watching this), it’s pretty faithful. Even if it does look visually pretty, I did come up with a story like this once but it never took off when it came to writing the story. Considering it also bears some similarity to One Wish They Never Wanted, it’ll never take off now.
Finally(!) Something to laugh at. Reborn injoke.
…Unfortunately, with the faithfulness of the manga comes the pervasive problem – I thought Eldlive was a bit subpar. I could see all the right tropes were there to make a hit, but I couldn’t see any real talent showing through, as if Amano’s resigned herself to doing only shonen because Reborn succeeded. It was Hibari that taught me you can have a cute bird sidekick instead of a monster designed from scratch, so why can’t Eldlive do that too?
Drew (the voice) is getting annoying already. Shaddap!
…another “unfortunately” is that Lane Brick isn’t too pretty compared to how I like my bishonen, but YMMV on that.
I didn’t check it when I read the manga…but Jean Renoir.
Great. (sarcastic) Bungou humour, to boot! That wasn’t in the original…and it’s just grim, too.
These mammary jokes aren’t doing it for me either, although they were in the original.
Verdict: Not taking it.
(POSA ep 1)
Prince of Stride was a new experience for me, as I thought I needed to add “sport anime” to my repetoire at the time. Unfortunately, I still haven’t gotten past my biases against sport anime even after finishing this…
Welp, I take back what I’ve said about OPs in the first episode. If it’s a good OP, it helps to set the norm.
CGI basketball. One of the weirdest things on the list of “things given CGI form in anime” to date, because it’s mostly cars.
Sad life. When people in a rejected club see that twist coming, it’s like a 4th wall break…kinda sorta.
Did I ever mention that this show is motivational? It’s really good for that, and colourful so it’s good for desktop wallpapers. (Also, it has a summer theme to it, so while I swelter, lemme just watch a show about running…and sweating…bad idea? I guess so. (sarcastic) However, there isn’t any better season to watch it in. Sweat – or imagined sweat – isn’t good any season of the year, so might as well watch it while I still have time.)
Tsurugiya…if Google-sensei serves me correctly…it’s in Osaka…? Update: I knew he came from somewhere in the country, but Hyogo is a different place to Osaka…
“Blue Sonic”. Well, it’s not like there would be a magazine called Sanic. Or Knuckles, for the matter.
What’s with the panda, though? Although, as some very obvious foreshadowing tells you, (Kyosuke) Kuga used to have his locker here.
How in Dante’s Inferno did Kohinata get the measurements of Takeru already?!
I checked up kabaddi last time, but eh, I’ll do it again.
I still think Fujiwara’s leg thing is creepy.
I dunno anything about Sun Tzu…but…lessee here. This quote is it, I think.
Who was the Relationer in the previous Stride Club?
What’s with the cat on the poster?!
“…is really hot…” – Is that what sets the shippers off? Or is that just a subbers’ choice of words?
They always blab aout weird things on the next ep preview. At least it’s not boring.
For some reason, my ad blocker isn’t working on AnimeLab any more…*sighs*
