hi broski ummmm what programs do you use for art and what brushes

I use procreate! For lineart/sketching I usually use a slightly modified version of the Shale brush in the default procreate “calligraphy” section- just w/ the streamline feature turned down to zero and more like…size variation? (Idk I modified it a year and a half ago I don’t completely remember what I did lol)

Then for my grayscale comics, like these,

I use this Copic marker brush w/ just straight up black and varying levels of opacity. Usually I don’t use blending brushes in these, but in my most recent one I did.

For my colored stuff tho I use a lotta this pencil brush for everything (shadows, highlights, base flats, etc) and then depending on whether I want something more painterly (like the ocs on the left) or more cell shaded (like stevepop on the right), I either use soft texture brushes or a chalk brush (I cannot for the LIFE of me find where this chalk brush came from?? I’ve been digging but idk I can’t find it outside of my duplicate??) for highlights

Some other brushes/brush sets I use (all of them are free as of rn ‘cuz I’m broke):

Habook Brushpack (specifically the rectangle one- it puts down flat colors nice and fast but also doesn’t annoy me the way most “ink” brushes do!)

Laurenillusrated Brushpack- I use these mainly for skin, they’re really nice. (Also, @laurenillustrated is on tumblr- her art is so pretty, it’s like a storybook istg. Check it out if you haven’t it’s AMAZING)

I’ve recently started using @loish’s brushpack too, and I ADORE these brushes. I used them a TON on the Christine poster. You can get them by signing up for Loish's Digital Art School, which is a great collection of art resources as a whole, and it’s totally free. Would absolutely recommend

And finally, for the halftone texture I like to put on everything, I use the Halftone Hospital Basic Tone Kit. All of their brushes are fantastic, definitely check them out if you like the look of traditional art but also like the lower supply cost of digital art lol. Or just in general, ‘cause they’re great

(Then for the paper texture overlays I love so much, I usually use stock photos tbh.)

Anyhow, these are some of my favorites. But I do use others too, and this all came from years of playing around and finding what I like! I had this phase about…1 1/2-2ish years ago where I hated my art style and nothing was coming out right. It pushed me to try a bunch of different brushes- in retrospect I don’t think the brushes were what made it better, I just improved over time, but I had a lot of fun trying out different brushes. So definitely try ‘em out and experiment, because it really is a fun time :))

OK so I'm feeling some guilt I started to draw cartoony like you but I get frustrated because it does bot look perfect like yours it's mostly small stuff like colors and clothes I love making cartoony body's sometimes clothing but I have color picking because I'm still new to art that has colors is my feelings normal or is it wrong of me? And how do I pick colors because it frustrated me to no end and made me stop drawing for months anyway in short summary how do I color the right way like I guess I know skin tones but anything else goes wrong and the other summary is how do you draw clothing because I can't for the life of me get clothing right

don't worry - it's normal to get frustrated when drawing. i know i've literally quit and deleted entire illustrations in the past because i didn't like how the colors came out, and i can spend whole hours just choosing base colors TwT i think the important part about learning art is not to rush. i'm seriously flattered you see me as inspiration, but what worked best for me back when i heavily referenced other artists was "mixing" styles together to create a "new" one - so i'd recommend studying and copying multiple artists you like and trying to blend their styles into one if that makes sense! ^^

hating color picking is completely normal when you're first starting out, and even late into art like i said before - i've been making original digital art on ibispaint for about 5 years now, and it's still difficult. but it's easy to make it fun, and the best way to do that imo is to experiment! i'd recommend studying color theory on a larger scale, and understanding how certain colors might look completely different based on where you put them. or maybe make an illustration and color it in a bunch of alternative ways! also, having "bad" or "awful" color skills starting out is OK - i still think my colors suck sometimes even now lol.

anyway, the best way for me to color pick is to just use that color for whatever the OG artist used for their art. let's use alex ahad as an example because i find his art and color use super interesting -

i don't usually color pick, but when i do, i typically start with picking the eye color. then, based off of the eye color, i chose a base color based on the character's color pallete (easier of the eye color is already close to the main color of the character, which for clyde is turquoise).

then, i pick more colors directly from the reference, for stuff like skin. at this point i have a good idea of the colors i want to use and stop color picking from the ref, but there's no shame if you still feel you need to.

after that, based on the colors i picked, i'll color in the rest of the piece. i usually end up changing the colors that i did take from the reference due to experimenting - for me, i just use color picking as a sort of stepping stone for when i'm not sure how to color a piece the exact way i want.

eventually, you can learn to color pick by eye rather than with the picking tool in your art program, tho that takes a lot of knowledge on color theory.

really there is no "right" way to color, especially for skin imo - don't limit yourself to just peach, tan and brown. clyde's skin is bright white, but i still used a yellowy color here because it was relative to the other colors in the piece. i've also used "alien" tones for human-toned characters in the past before!

FORGOTTEN LAND'S SECOND ANNIVERSARY :3

I AM SOOOO BACK

I started this drawing yesterday around afternoon and finished it just a few minutes earlier.

I went with a messier type of drawing instead of more clean like the elfilin one from yesterday, i find it fun doing it like this, mostly cause i dont have to worry about making it perfectly so i dont get as frustrated as normal. Id place this one as my second best digital drawing. im pretty sure i havent posted what i consider my best digital drawing here, tho i do have it in instagram, i might post it here one day, tho these two are way too tied up, i love how this came out, its not exactly like how i imagined it but its really close to it, and also itd say that since i dont tend to play around lighting that much, this was such a joy to draw and i cant help but stare at it a lot, at least until i start hating it because i made quite a lot of errors. i also changed my elfilis gijinka just a tad bit from last time, but its not that big of a difference, mostly.

ofc i had to draw elfilis for forgotten land's anniversary, i tend to deny it in my head but yeah they're my fave of the kirby characters even tho i hate them a bit. I wanted to draw some more doodles, like, elfilis eating cake, kirby car, a bunch of other stuff (not elfilin cuz i already drew him yesterday) but when i tried i couldnt draw anything more, guess this drawing burned me out a lot, huh?

you can definitly tell i spent all the efforts on him cuz if you look a bit closer to the bottom part you'll see its almost barely detailed, but i mean, they're the focus so make sense i guess for me not add that much detail there. um also, maybe because i dunno i had OVER 130 LAYERS jeez no wonder firealpaca was slowing down so much, i need to manage my layers better next time, tho i did do something i keep forgetting, wich is naming them (most of them at least) that was a real life saver

Also, antares (fecto elfilis' spear/cadaceus), as always, was a pain to draw, but this time its probably been draw the most accurate out of every other drawing ive made with it in it, i didnt notice it was like, a little curved when it reached the blade

fun fact! actually, this is technically a redraw, somewhere around between february and march i started a fecto elfilis drawing for the first anniversary, but i couldnt finish it in time, and i never finished it

also his wings are like that cuz i did not want to draw the pattern, its way too hard, i literally copy pasted it, wait, i was talking about the 2024 version but i looked at the 2023 one and i just noticed it also has the pattern copy pasted, i guess some stuff never changes since i still abuse the ctrl+c ctrl+v to this day

Also i ended up making a huge error there, i was planing to add the phantom spears from orbital pulsar (the attack he does first when you battle them at lab discovera) but theres an innacuracy, when they do the attack, they always close their eyes, i had actually sketched him (well i mean both these drawings are basically the first sketch (2023) or second sketch(2024) with some color, shadows and lighting. i didnt do lineart in the 2024 one cuz i wanted to be a bit like the og i made (too bad i sketched that one with black since the og was sketched with white due to me drawing the bg first)) with his eyes closed but them decided to make them open for a reason i cant remember, maybe i thought itd look nicer? idk

ive had the idea of redrawing this for quite some month now so it was kinda already planned

I really love katfl, like a buncha whole lot, its basically almost my first mainline kirby game. 100% the demo, finished the game in almost one day, i literally play it monthly, like, every month i put the card in my switch, start it up, get morpho sword, and go shred elfilis in lab discovera. i would probably not even be here on tumblr and the kirby fandom if it werent for it. and i love it so much i genuinly cannot express how much i like it and treasure it with words or anything

Scared into acting again, here are some shadow/persona designs I made for Persona Crossroads:

I saw a news article thing for P6 show up on my phone's newsfeed and got scared into acting once more, here are some more persona and shadow designs I made for Crossroads (which I sort of scrapped since I don't want it to be done in the P5 Tactica art style anymore XDD)

First up we got the myth, the legend, Bayonetta!

I actually got pretty far into making the art digital, but as much of a shame as it is, I just wanted an art style change XDD The final Bayonetta design will probably still look similar tho owo

I used Ernesto from P5T as inspo for the gun feet X33 I don't really have much else to talk about regarding her design since it mostly sticks to her canon outfit in Bayonetta 1.

Next, we got Karl Jacobs' TFTSMP character.

I really wanted to lean in on the whole In Between-Other Side-XD's World idea, tho I ended up not finishing the colouring since I got stuck on what to do with the hair lol XDD

The bottom coat part is inspired by a fanart I saw by Cute Studio (I believe their username was...) and the inside of the coat and the hands sprouting from the ends of Jacobs' scarf is a reference to all the versions of him that can be found in the In Between. The last notable note I can think to mention about his design is how his halo is meant to sort of... evoke the imagery of a clock? If that makes sense lol.

I wanted him to look super ominous since Jacobs' was supposed to be a boss.

Unexpectedly, up next we have the illusive, rumoured Istaroth from Genshin Impact!

It's a weird choice since we've never had a confirmed appearance for her, but back in my old notes for Crossroads, Istaroth was supposed to be one of the characters' personas, so yeah, I made her lol.

Her design was inspired by art of her drawn by gierosajie-art and littleblueberryartist! Originally I had her standing, but realised the pose of her sitting down with her hands in her lap to be more iconic.

And here we have Mari from OMORI! :DD

I think I mentioned it before, she was originally supposed to be part of a system of personas that's like... a bunch of personas in one personas because their user was a person with DID. Still not sure if I'm keeping the concept yet, but if not, then she'll just be a shadow roaming around.

Her hair was inspired by a fanart made by k0re_drawings on Twitter. I just loved how they drew her hair in a way that looked like snapped violin strings! If I redesign her tho, I think I might use a drawing by an artist called Hiko (I think) as inspiration. Mari doesn't really look like Something, but if you look at her from the back, the resemblance is there, I swear!

And next we have the Electro Archon herself, Raiden Ei! :DD

This was designed when she was still supposed to be Arilette's persona and I truly regret not making her skin look like shadows :\\

Her outfit is basically just her normal outfit without some of the asymmetricalness and some extra ornaments and armour inspired by the Raiden Shogun boss and a small handful of fanarts. I love how her bottom half has the vague silhouette of a butterfly :))

And last but not least, we got the Anemo Archon, Venti! :DD

So... I don't like his design ._. It's too much. I tried using various fanarts as inspiration to try and make his outfit a lil cooler, but it's just... so... much ._. (I do love the touch of Celestia in his corrupted form owo)

Even tho the name of the persona is Venti, I decided to make his look resemble Barbatos so I could pull a Third Ascension and make it look like his bard outfit while naming it Barbatos owo

Ahem- in any other reasons, this ship changed my life FOREVER. As in like EVER AT ALL. I made like 20+ comics in traditional with 200 pages with my ugly ass artstyle. And in Digital with 23 separate comics and maybe about 80+ pages? Im not quite sure.

I published 20 stories (OLD FICS) that were about the ship and 2 stories (18 if separate) as two different ships

It was fun staying. I loved staying there until it got a bit toxic from my space in a personal issue.

But I'm good now ^^ just don't draw alot of it nowadays.

Some art I did in English class, mainly just pose stuff and art of my oc. Some how my brain has been letting me draw stuff outside of bill in that class, I don’t understand it personally but whatever. Definitely not all my pose practices (I’ve done a bunch more of them, they are just fanart character fixation stuff tho) might post them in the future but I kinda want to turn one into a digital drawing first.

All characters are mine except paper who is from the comic papercut, great comic 11/10. Wanna try and draw him more tbh. i haven't drawn the little bean much at all. Messed up his eye so bad tho rip T-T i tried fixing it but made it worst. probably should have tried harder tbh

I've always been an artsy person. I love all art, including performing arts.

Digital Art

I feel like I only draw good whenever I have references instead of drawing off the top of my head. I've read quite a few webtoons and they especially, similarly to how I got into writing, make me want to learn how to draw comics and whatnot. I'd especially love to learn how to draw really good and off the top of my head so that I can create unique book covers for my books instead of resorting to images readily available online (like from Pinterest) and minimal styles to choose from because I'm no professional nor do I have money to pay anyone to do cover art and design for me. Though I'd say I'm quite good at my cover designing myself.

Acting

I've always found acting interesting, even though I've never done it. I'd still want to try it. There was even a point in time when I wanted to be an actress before I decided writing would be my ultimate path. I still am interested in acting and would love to try it tho. There's nothing wrong with being a person of multitude.

Dancing

I've always loved dancing, but I'm not a professional dancer. I would love to take professional lessons, but that's not in the cards for me and my parents definitely wouldn't pay for it. But I remember the days (back before I moved houses and still had space in my room, now I have barely any to even walk), I would replay a bunch of dancing choreography videos and learn frame by frame.

Singing

I love singing. I always did it when I could, but now that I'm in a house with a bunch of people and rooms right next to mine, I can't exactly do it anymore like that — belting out and stuff lol. Loved it tho.

Writing

Writing especially is my favorite. It's my go-to. It's my life. I could stay here for days and tell you all about my journey in writing and my hopes and my dreams, but I don't want to keep this post long.

So either way, I just wanted to make this post to make my dreams and goals clear. Whether someone finds and reads this or not, oh well.

I want to become an author. I want to finally be able to finish a book and publish it. I want my book to be popular, and earn money from it.

But unfortunately, if you've seen my last posts, I had to put writing on a pause. I wish I didn't have to, but if I'm gonna get through this year without fighting too much, I have to put it away. And it still pains me to do so.

Either way, I wish for nothing but me in my own house, writing and undistracted and undisturbed by anything or anyone around me. I have too much going on in my life rn to write while being completely focused like I used to be. People bother me every second of the day but let me not get into that. I'd rather not ruin my okay mood rn.

Hmm going back to the scrollwork-esque stuff, idk if I’m necessarily good at it and it’s not that I dislike doing it, but it’s more that every time I do, it I’m like “why’d I choose to draw this again, it’s HARD to come up with” but I’m usually proud of how it comes out! Like these

17. Do you eat/drink when drawing? if so, what

I usually make tea whenever I draw or play games but I get so focused on what I’m doing that I ALWAYS forget to drink it. I will literally take one sip right before I dive into my work and then not touch it at all until MUCH later LOL that’s why I had to get myself one of those bottles that keeps your drink warm for like 12 hrs. I still will absolutely forget it but at least it’s still lukewarm by the time I remember :’)

18. An estimate of how much art supplies you've broken

Hmmm I mainly do digital art and thankfully I don’t break much of that (except some worn down pen nibs and a horribly frayed wire on my first drawing tablet), but I totally decimated one of my posable figma models bc I tried to bend the limbs too far and they snapped off...she lost an arm and both legs.........

19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)

LOL NOTHING MAYBE??? Well in bgs I think the nature element I’m best at drawing is probably clouds.....still so proud of these ones, I love doing the airplane line (?) through the sky haha....also only did this once in the vilorel hangout doodle page but I enjoyed drawing the makeup products!

20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy

Mmm maybe hands? i still find them super hard to draw too, but I do like drawing graceful hands!! Will most definitely find an excuse to hide them if I can tho :’)

ask you questions, hm? how did you develop your current artstyle, and what are some previous art styles you had? or, how did it evolve over time?

This is honestly hard to answer! I kinda just kept drawing what I like? A lot of my own characters, in fact a lot of my artwork just ended up being character designing rather than full finished pieces...

I think a big part of my style developing is that I got super impatient overtime, so I tried to speed up my art process as much as I could. It also helps that I prefer simpler, bold and unshaded kinda artwork tho, so that also takes me less time.

My previous art was honestly pretty bad, I didn't really know what I wanted with my style at all. Pretty much all that work is lost to time on my old deactivated Instagram, I have it all personally archived but I'd prefer not to share cuz its embarrassing lol. It was also mostly traditional marker art until I went full stop with pursuing digital art in late 2018.

I think I just kept looking at stuff that I liked to get inspired! Neon color palettes actually stimulate my brain a bunch for some reason? Like I use coolors.co and just generate palettes until my brain goes zingy. I also love lookin at wacky bugs for inspo bc bugs have inspired me all my life!! Mantids of all kinds(looking at u Pseudoharpax virescens and idolomantis diabolica) and moths, especially ones in the family Uraniidae!

I've been doing digital art for 6 years now so practice is definitely a big chunk of how I got good at drawing hair and skin. Recently I have also improved on it because I'm taking a figure painting class and that's helped so much with understanding how to work with paint texture and colors in order to create dimension and make skin and hair look realistic. I put some tips I learned from it in this very long explanation but if anyone wants it I can make a comprehensive list with examples of all the tips I use in digital art from the class.

I don't know if this is what you were expecting but here's the far too long and detailed explanation of everything I do with art dscjbkcbj:

The program I use is procreate, and I exclusively use like 3 brushes for painting stuff.

(moment of silence for my lineart) If you're looking at my older art that has lineart I used to use a modified technical pen for lineart but procreate has since fucked me over and reset my brush settings/changed how the pressure tip works, so I no longer do lineart because I can't figure out how to make the brush go back to how I want it to.

I still use the default technical pen for adding solid blocks of color since it reacts with the fill tool well, and occasionally for flyaway hairs but alas, it doesn't get used as often anymore. I also used to shade with color with the medium hard airbrush when I did lineart, and would do a shadow layer using the overlay setting.

For the pieces that are more of a painting style, those I'll do a very light sketch with the default flat brush, and come back and darken certain areas like the eyelashes/eyebrows/nostrils/mouth opening so they come through most obviously. After that I'll make a layer beneath the sketch with the flat color, usually a more neutral tone so it acts as a guiding point for the shading. Then I just do a clipping mask layer on top and use the flat brush to shade.

The advice I actually listen to from my figure painting professor is to use cooler colors to help them fall back, and warmer colors to help come forward, but that's not cut and dry for skin tones, especially if you're like me and do a bunch of tieflings. In general I first fill in the cheeks/part of the nose with a warm color, the base layer of the shadows with a darker shade of the neutral tone (the shadow color gets super varied tho depending on where on the body it falls, and that variation helps add dimension, the neutral tone just helps to generally block things in), and the broad highlights with a slightly lighter and sometimes more saturated color than the neutral base skin tone.

Ive found for purple characters doing a warm shadow on places with just general dimension, a cooler purple for more intense shadows, and a cool lighter purple/blue for the highlights looks really nice, but it depends on the lighting you're going for.

I think the best advice I now follow from my professor is to remember light gets reflected in the shadows as well on things that have dimension. The most recent example I have is on the drawing of Miriam where her chest is partially visible, there's a reflective light between a medium and dark shadow layer on her tiddy. This effect just adds so much depth and breaks up the shadows so I 10/10 recommend it (usually using a cool color for this is best). When we paint models in class its most noticeable on the underside of the chin, shadow side of legs/arms, and on the chest or stomach fat.

Practicing and studying faces really helps to determine where what tones/values/colors look best, so I definitely recommend doing that because doing 2 paintings a week for class has helped me understand it so much better.
