This past week I read book four of A Farewell to Arms, in which Henry finally escapes the war and ultimately arrives in Switzerland to live “happily ever after” with Catherine. Unlike a typical fairy tale, however, the book doesn’t end here, and subsequently this section would be filled with some of the most beautifully written and tragic passages foreshadowing the ending. Despite Henry’s efforts to detach from the war and his focus on love with Catherine, Hemmingway foreshadows the impossibility for this to happen and their inevitable farewell.

As soon as Henry enters Milan, it’s clear that he wants nothing to do with the war anymore and only has his eyes set on a life with Catherine. The war was a hugely traumatic experience and forced Henry to abandon for his own life, so, naturally, he returned with no intent of going back. This is displayed right off the bat with his conversation with the bartender. The bartender heedlessly gives unwanted help and advice by offering Henry proper war papers and letting him know everyone can easily tell he’s military by his coat. Henry ignores everything he says and repeats the phrase “I’m alright”, dusting off the bartender's well-intentioned motives which he wants no part of. Even small reminders, Henry shuts out and disregards. On a similar token, he ignores the war whenever Catherine asks him about it, “I had the paper but I did not read it because I did not want to read about the war. I was going to forget about the war. I had made a separate peace.” (211) The key phrase “separate peace” depicts Henry as beyond and done with the war. However, in reality, it’s much more likely that he is in denial of it’s impact on him and it’s impending doom. He constantly reaches for the ideal of a perfect life with Catherine, even in their trip to Switzerland, but Hemmingway goes on to show how this simply wasn’t realistic, philosophically or contextually.

Even though Henry wants to chase a perfect getaway life with Catherine, Hemmingway foreshadows his inevitable failure to do so through the world around Henry and his own internal distress. Henry has a newfound detachment towards the war’s ongoings, one that would contrast characters like Ferguson or Count Greffi who remind of the real presence of the war. Ferguson despises Henry and Catherine’s relationship and is torn apart by the similarity she sees in them in her own situation, “‘You do want to go. You see you want to leave me even to eat dinner alone. I’ve always wanted to goto the Italian lakes and this is how it is.’ she sobbed, then looked at Catherine and choked.” (215) Ferguson parallels a situation where the war has stripped someone of a lover or a life. Tragically, she sobbs about her fear of loneliness and her look at Catherines symbolizes the parallel that this reality could happen to them as well. Not only would this be mirrored with Count Greffi, who resembles cynicism even in old age, but also in Henry himself. “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kill. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.” (216) In this moment in meditative and almost clairvoyant reflection, Henry comes to the dark conclusion that the world is a cruel place which breaks or kills everyone. The “very good and gentle” of course referring to Catherine, the one love he finds life in. In these chapters Henry appears to be moving as far away from the war as he’s ever been, yet the characterization and world tells a story of a building, inevitable tragedy.

Partially through writing and partially through the reader's own interpretation, Hemmingway passes on his own contemplation of war and philosophy onto the reader. Reading brought me back to the essay I read before I started this book, in which Hemmingway himself states that the true evils of war aren't the people fighting at the front lines, but the people profiting from their honor. This unique brand of cynicism is one much more human and easily relatable than a more close minded view. 

When cynicism it’s easy to think of the angsty and needlessly emotional teenager or reddit poster or whatever comes to mind. In reality, though, cynicism can represent an intelligence and natural response to a messed up system. Just as there is an instituted belief in A Farewell to Arms that all love must depart and war ruins all, there is also a developed discussion of the war’s impacts which lead people to these conclusions. In a grander sense, we can use this as a way to see outlooks and philosophies as a product of their time. Yes, Hemmingway was known for being cynical and tragic, but you also have to consider the horrible state the world was in at the time of his artistry. For us and any of our outlooks on 2020, it’s important to be considerate of backgrounds and experience which could lead someone to their own beliefs. The modern problems of the functioning of capitalism and the bizarreness of internet culture, of course, make everyone’s conclusion much more left field, but ones that we can be understanding and intellectual of nevertheless.

Cathartic space

I was writing about how I started an anonymous blog (this anonymous blog) to write deeply about topics I thought I shouldn't publish on my main blog (if you've been on social media at all, you might understand that being cancelled for a differnt opinion isn't that great for one's career, especially if the career in question has only just begun).

I thus realised that while I've been preaching to myself about this almost therapeutic exercise, I haven't taken full advantage of this anonimity (partly because I shared this secret with a close friend, hi there!). Here, an excerpt from a note I made while reading Jonathan Haidt's "The Righteous Mind":

Reading about the moral virtues of conservatives, I'm starting to connect my desire for orderliness, especially my demarkation of close friends, or classification of information consumption to my social conservatism. I still wonder how this plays into a more economic definition of political partisanship; I don't fully understand the economics of politics yet, but perhaps there will be a correlation between morals of conservatism and economic conservatism.

Again, if you've been alive and kicking for as long as the Socials have existed, you'd know that it's insanely cool to diss on conservatism -- political, social, or personal, without even bothering with the meaning behind it. And then there's this:

For a while now, I've been distressed at the readiness with which the Indian youth embraces American partisanship. The irrelevance of American issues in India, yet the relevance credited to them by the woke Indian astounds me; why are twenty year old Indian females liking posts about abortion rights when they already have them in the country they're living in? Not only was there gross abuse of platform and misinformation campaigns, but also incitement of violence being supported by these woke Indian liberals. The ideas of inclusivity and privilege, while not being in any way fully incorrect, have trickled from an ultra-left American professor's study and essays, to heavily left-leaning American campuses, to the Indian youth armed with a phone and a high-speed internet connection. Representative icons and symbols are reduced to variations in skin tones, hair color, and a hijabi woman. Not only is it unsatisfactory symbolism, but it promulgates victimhood of minorities and sacralizes the Muslim identity, which is already being capitalized by malls and big brands by the introduction of halal makeup and colorful headscarves. While I couldn't care less about your religion or politics, I am worried that the politics of identity is shaping up to be more of wearing headscarves to make a point than to do it sincerely for the purposes of one's faith.

Clearly, such scandalous statements are sure to ruin my social standing, push me further down the social totem pole than I already might be, and label me as a maniacal fascist. Such is life. Anyway, cheers to cathartic publishing.

When I look ahead of me, I see almost nothing in certainty. The next five years are completely shrouded in hundreds of variables that seem impossible to estimate. Maybe I’ll meet the love of my life. Maybe I’ll become a stripper! Maybe I’ll start a Depop store and get heavily involved in embroidering thrifted t-shirts. Maybe I’ll die. The only thing that feels even remotely predictable about the next phase of my life is that it will be characterized by financial instability and turmoil. Thankfully, I am no stranger to this lifestyle. Does nothing feel like home if not crippling anxiety about the absence of money?

I think I want to go to grad school, but I also think I just want to piss off my mom’s brothers who I reckon falsely predicted my perceivably inevitable teen pregnancy and pill addiction. My relationship with the future of my education has always been peppered by impulsivity and an insatiable hunger to prove people wrong. I remember sitting on my grandma’s bed and telling her that I’d never need to know math because famous actresses don’t need to know how to do long division. College seemed unlikely to all parties involved, myself included. Ten years later I would be having several simultaneous and distinct types of nervous breakdowns as I hysterically filled out college applications and attempted pragmatic yet emotionally persuasive personal statement essays, a task that I still find harrowing even at my supposedly capable age of twenty-one. My infatuation with the idea of pursuing a PhD was not able to blossom until I actually solidified my understanding of what a PhD even is: something that I did not accomplish until my second year of university. Since then, the elusive PhD became an iconic object in my symbolic repertoire. Only several of the grown-up people that I have known have had them, always the individuals whom I held in the highest esteem despite my lack of understanding of what the title meant and what they had done to achieve it. People like Ted, an old Jewish biologist from New York City who doubled as my mother’s platonically indoctrinated replacement for my absent father. Ted often took care of me when my mom couldn’t. He came over every Christmas and gave me an advent calendar every year despite his Jewish background and obvious atheism. He was at every school concert and birthday dinner. He always greeted me with the name “sweety-heart”. I remember that I could practice my oftentimes cutting sense of humor on him without hurting his feelings. He fired back and I love that. I just realized that I often regard this tolerance as a mark of intelligence in my adult life, which is probably not a sound assumption. Anyhow, Ted lived alone and never married. I never knew him to have romances of any kind, and I wonder now if maybe he was very lonely. I love Ted and see the good in him, and, despite his hard-headedness and possible alienation from other people brought on by his intellect, it confuses me that he never found a partner. His house was always extraordinarily plain, and there was an office on the second floor with a seldom used Dell desktop computer, the kind that closely resembled a microwave oven in both in size and in internet browsing capability. I fantasize about getting accepted to somewhere like UC Santa Cruz or Berkeley, maintaining a perfect grade point average as well as a perfect tan, spending my immaculately managed free time on golden-lit road trips along the California coast that at once feel completely spontaneous yet never interfering with my responsibilities. I would feel the rhythmic inner life of that quintessential California social justice, alive with passion as well as intellect and certainly not lacking in idealism. I would deftly weave intellectual tapestries around the scaffolds resurrected by greater women, people like Angela Davis and bell hooks. Last night, I met an impossibly tall and suspiciously good-looking skater/artist/probable-alcoholic who goes to NYU when he’s not too busy being a walking parody of himself. When I asked him what he studies, he just rolled his eyes over to mine. Such a movement would probably have something to do with the perils of late capitalism and the growing number of white-male-20-somethings who identify as socialists just to give them a little edge. Naturally, being that he is just ridiculous enough to be precisely my type, this exchange was enough to inspire me to rearrange the entirety of my life-plan so that I could adequately allow him an opportunity to ruin my life at least one time. After looking at the graduate programs available at NYU along with the obscene number on the price tag, I realized that maybe NYU is not the move, despite how fucking cool it would sound to say it out loud.

But that’s what New York seems to be all about. It is just so goddamn cool. I imagine myself suffering, leaning against the brick wall of a corner store with a cigarette and a bad attitude, thinking about how badly I want to be anywhere else and nowhere else in the same moment. The NYU student, on top of the memoir I am currently reading by a certain New Yorker who’s name I will not mention, on top of my obsession with Louis C.K. and his elegant framing of NYC mishaps, on top of my somewhat recently accelerated fixation on writing self-indulgent personal essays that bear little to no relevance to anyone other than myself, all lead my forward gaze toward New York City: a place where I can truly reach my full potential as the self-obsessed artist wannabe that I was born to be.

The Abolition of Work – Bob Black

One of the most interesting readings that I have done in recent years, definitely more interesting than the previous readings we had to do. This reading by Bob Black, written in 1985 and being part of an anthology of essays named “The Abolition of Work and Other Essays”, which was published by Loompanics Unlimited, is (as the title states) about the abolition of work. But what does work really mean? 

According to Bertrand Russell on one of his essays in “In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays”:

“Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth’s surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so. The first kind is unpleasant and ill paid; the second is pleasant and highly paid. The second kind is capable of indefinite extension: there are not only those who give orders, but those who give advice as to what orders should be given.”

Or a bit more simplified, work is an activity performed by a person in exchange to (usually) economic compensation. So, is work really our best chance of being happy and having a “life”? Are we what we do?

I always thought that it was capitalism that made us, the proletariat, feel so miserably (spoiler alert, it is, but it’s a bit more complicated) and I never expected to find readings that would further enrich my beliefs on the subject as I didn’t know what I was looking for. Already deep and heavily influenced by (mostly) books of Marx and Engels (i.e. The Capital, The Communist Manifesto, etc.), Bakunin (i.e. Statism and Anarchy, God and the State, etc.), Kropotkin (i.e. The Conquest of Bread, etc.), Noam Chomsky (i.e. Chomsky on Anarchism, etc.), George Orwell (i.e. The Animal Farm, 1984, etc.), Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed, I kept feeling like something was missing.

This is what The Abolition of Work by Bob Black is to me. When I came up with the story 2- maybe 3- years back, I was at a point that I was writing down ideas and concepts for stories with one thing in common, to stop the oppression. Ever since I was a kid, I did not like being told what to do, what to think, what to feel, I didn’t like being put into a box and the older I became, the more I felt this way. But being from a country where rebellions and revolutions against oppressors seem to be in our blood, I guess didn’t really help either.

Nevertheless, The Abolition of Work came and fit in my beliefs like a missing puzzle that I had been looking for for years. After countless conversations with friends, (it is Greece after all) I would always reach the same conclusion. I found the system wrong, faulty, it just never clicked with me, the whole concept of going to school to “learn” and be “taught” things that you are not even interested in and how bizarre it was that everything was so driven by memorising huge texts instead of creative thinking whilst your parents would, surprisingly, go to work those exact same hours; being forced to stay still at an age that you are bursting with energy -and if you have ADHD then good luck- otherwise you would get punished; getting forced to go to school at 8am and if you were late there would be a penalty; how we are taught from a young age to follow orders and be obedient and be rewarded for it, like we are being brainwashed to do what we are asked without questioning it, and the list goes on and on and on. As Black would say in the essay, “Discipline is what the factory and the office and the store share with the prison and the school and the mental hospital.” basically saying that the children, the “future”, are being brainwashed into being good employees as we are “living in a world designed for work”.  

“Work is the source of nearly all the misery in the world. Almost any evil you’d care to name comes from working or from living in a world designed for work. In order to stop suffering, we have to stop working.”

Black argues that work is the source of nearly all the misery in the world and we should abolish it and start living for us, instead of living to work. He proposes that instead of working (which as previously established has a negative meaning), maybe a new approach is taken, a more ludic, a more playful approach, as it won’t be forced on to you and make you miserable by slowly poising you, but it will be something that you chose voluntarily to do, making it more fun.
