How do you feel about the increase in really weird NSFW ads on here (advertising panels that look like sexual encounters, and AI art apps that pride themselves on porn) but will take down NSFW posts from their users, even if it isn't technically sexual.
i hate all social media and it's consistent prioritising the advertisers over the users and the internet simply was a better place before capitalism sunk its hooks into it
#i could write essays about how capitalism ruined the internet.#i was actually talking to someone earlier today about how youtube was kind of effectively ruined by monetisation.#and they were raised in the soviet union and we had a bit of a talk about how art was better because it wasn't for profit.#the people who made art made it because they wanted to do it and because they loved it.#she said that communism was terrible for every aspect of life for her. people's lives under communism wasn't pretty.#but the art was better. and i feel like it's true for the internet – it was better when it was a free-for-all.#the companies didn't know how to exploit it yet and turn it into a neverending profit-driven hellscape.#people created content because they wanted to. because they wanted to make something silly to make people laugh.#not for profit. not for gain. not for numbers. not to further their career.#i miss the days of newgrounds and youtube before monetisation.#capitalism has soiled everything that's joyful and good in this world.#people should be able to share whatever they want.#people should be able to tell any story they want without the fear of being silenced by advertisers.#that's what made the internet so beautiful before. anyone could do anything and we all had equal footing.#but now we're victims of the algorithm. and it makes me sick.#i'm quitting my job in social media. i'm quitting it. it makes me too depressed. i have an existential crisis every freaking day.#every day i wake up and say "ah. this is the fucking hell we live in#i'm so sorry i feel so passionate about this.#social media is a black hole and it is actively destroying humanity. forget ai. social media is what's doing it.#i miss how beautiful the internet used to be. it should've been a tool for good. but it's corrupt and evil now.#sci speaks

A Farewell to Arms Post #5
Blog Post #5 A Farewell to Arms
This past week I read book four of A Farewell to Arms, in which Henry finally escapes the war and ultimately arrives in Switzerland to live “happily ever after” with Catherine. Unlike a typical fairy tale, however, the book doesn’t end here, and subsequently this section would be filled with some of the most beautifully written and tragic passages foreshadowing the ending. Despite Henry’s efforts to detach from the war and his focus on love with Catherine, Hemmingway foreshadows the impossibility for this to happen and their inevitable farewell.
As soon as Henry enters Milan, it’s clear that he wants nothing to do with the war anymore and only has his eyes set on a life with Catherine. The war was a hugely traumatic experience and forced Henry to abandon for his own life, so, naturally, he returned with no intent of going back. This is displayed right off the bat with his conversation with the bartender. The bartender heedlessly gives unwanted help and advice by offering Henry proper war papers and letting him know everyone can easily tell he’s military by his coat. Henry ignores everything he says and repeats the phrase “I’m alright”, dusting off the bartender's well-intentioned motives which he wants no part of. Even small reminders, Henry shuts out and disregards. On a similar token, he ignores the war whenever Catherine asks him about it, “I had the paper but I did not read it because I did not want to read about the war. I was going to forget about the war. I had made a separate peace.” (211) The key phrase “separate peace” depicts Henry as beyond and done with the war. However, in reality, it’s much more likely that he is in denial of it’s impact on him and it’s impending doom. He constantly reaches for the ideal of a perfect life with Catherine, even in their trip to Switzerland, but Hemmingway goes on to show how this simply wasn’t realistic, philosophically or contextually.
Even though Henry wants to chase a perfect getaway life with Catherine, Hemmingway foreshadows his inevitable failure to do so through the world around Henry and his own internal distress. Henry has a newfound detachment towards the war’s ongoings, one that would contrast characters like Ferguson or Count Greffi who remind of the real presence of the war. Ferguson despises Henry and Catherine’s relationship and is torn apart by the similarity she sees in them in her own situation, “‘You do want to go. You see you want to leave me even to eat dinner alone. I’ve always wanted to goto the Italian lakes and this is how it is.’ she sobbed, then looked at Catherine and choked.” (215) Ferguson parallels a situation where the war has stripped someone of a lover or a life. Tragically, she sobbs about her fear of loneliness and her look at Catherines symbolizes the parallel that this reality could happen to them as well. Not only would this be mirrored with Count Greffi, who resembles cynicism even in old age, but also in Henry himself. “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kill. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially.” (216) In this moment in meditative and almost clairvoyant reflection, Henry comes to the dark conclusion that the world is a cruel place which breaks or kills everyone. The “very good and gentle” of course referring to Catherine, the one love he finds life in. In these chapters Henry appears to be moving as far away from the war as he’s ever been, yet the characterization and world tells a story of a building, inevitable tragedy.
Partially through writing and partially through the reader's own interpretation, Hemmingway passes on his own contemplation of war and philosophy onto the reader. Reading brought me back to the essay I read before I started this book, in which Hemmingway himself states that the true evils of war aren't the people fighting at the front lines, but the people profiting from their honor. This unique brand of cynicism is one much more human and easily relatable than a more close minded view.
When cynicism it’s easy to think of the angsty and needlessly emotional teenager or reddit poster or whatever comes to mind. In reality, though, cynicism can represent an intelligence and natural response to a messed up system. Just as there is an instituted belief in A Farewell to Arms that all love must depart and war ruins all, there is also a developed discussion of the war’s impacts which lead people to these conclusions. In a grander sense, we can use this as a way to see outlooks and philosophies as a product of their time. Yes, Hemmingway was known for being cynical and tragic, but you also have to consider the horrible state the world was in at the time of his artistry. For us and any of our outlooks on 2020, it’s important to be considerate of backgrounds and experience which could lead someone to their own beliefs. The modern problems of the functioning of capitalism and the bizarreness of internet culture, of course, make everyone’s conclusion much more left field, but ones that we can be understanding and intellectual of nevertheless.

Cathartic space
I was writing about how I started an anonymous blog (this anonymous blog) to write deeply about topics I thought I shouldn't publish on my main blog (if you've been on social media at all, you might understand that being cancelled for a differnt opinion isn't that great for one's career, especially if the career in question has only just begun).
I thus realised that while I've been preaching to myself about this almost therapeutic exercise, I haven't taken full advantage of this anonimity (partly because I shared this secret with a close friend, hi there!). Here, an excerpt from a note I made while reading Jonathan Haidt's "The Righteous Mind":
Reading about the moral virtues of conservatives, I'm starting to connect my desire for orderliness, especially my demarkation of close friends, or classification of information consumption to my social conservatism. I still wonder how this plays into a more economic definition of political partisanship; I don't fully understand the economics of politics yet, but perhaps there will be a correlation between morals of conservatism and economic conservatism.
Again, if you've been alive and kicking for as long as the Socials have existed, you'd know that it's insanely cool to diss on conservatism -- political, social, or personal, without even bothering with the meaning behind it. And then there's this:
For a while now, I've been distressed at the readiness with which the Indian youth embraces American partisanship. The irrelevance of American issues in India, yet the relevance credited to them by the woke Indian astounds me; why are twenty year old Indian females liking posts about abortion rights when they already have them in the country they're living in? One could argue that liking the post could help increase its visibility; but is a copy-pasted Instagram post about abortion in the USA really going to enter the feed of pro-life individuals on the same platform? Highly doubtful. The anti-CAA posts being circulated on Instagram left me seething, yes, but also shaken at the barbarism that people indulged in. Not only was there gross abuse of platform and misinformation campaigns, but also incitement of violence being supported by these woke Indian liberals. The ideas of inclusivity and privilege, while not being in any way fully incorrect, have trickled from an ultra-left American professor's study and essays, to heavily left-leaning American campuses, to the Indian youth armed with a phone and a high-speed internet connection. Representative icons and symbols are reduced to variations in skin tones, hair color, and a hijabi woman. Not only is it unsatisfactory symbolism, but it promulgates victimhood of minorities and sacralizes the Muslim identity, which is already being capitalized by malls and big brands by the introduction of halal makeup and colorful headscarves. While I couldn't care less about your religion or politics, I am worried that the politics of identity is shaping up to be more of wearing headscarves to make a point than to do it sincerely for the purposes of one's faith.
Clearly, such scandalous statements are sure to ruin my social standing, push me further down the social totem pole than I already might be, and label me as a maniacal fascist. Such is life. Anyway, cheers to cathartic publishing.

Forensic & Clinical Psychology » Same Day Essay Concerns Table Our Analyze On Same Day Essay Get Essay Or Dissertation From Informed Experts You might also need to contemplate the difference between quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Quoting is reserved for traces of textual content that are similar to an unique piece of writing. If you need to defend an opinion effectively, don’t go away yourself open to ridicule by making indefensible sweeping statements. “People who smoke cigarettes are idiots” or “There’s nothing worthwhile on television right now” are just too strong and broad. Qualify your statements when needed and state opinions that may be logically defended. If you might be writing for a teacher who expects a certain type, by all means do as you’re informed. I don’t do that because I’m a masochist, but to remind myself how far I’ve come. I’ve labored with dozens of editors over the years, and in my expertise, the best are those that show you why one thing doesn’t work, quite than just telling you that it doesn’t. A easy framework of which sections should seem in a specific order, along with a couple of sentences about what each section incorporates, could also be sufficient. If the subject you’re tackling is a little more advanced, your define may need to be, too – however having a top level view earlier than you write is like having a roadmap in the glove box of your automotive earlier than a highway trip. If you aren’t good at the nice particulars of usage, find somebody who is and ask for his or her help. Make certain you capitalize correct nouns and use commas and apostrophes accurately. A single apparent error could be enough to ruin your entire essay within the minds of some readers. Be diligent to remove these obstacles before you publish. Finding a writing companion can also be an effective way to hold yourself accountable and hold going. If you need to improve your writing abilities, writing on a regular basis is not going to only diminish your concern of the clean page , it'll also assist you to develop a unique style. For quick and easy on-line sources, bookmark Grammar Girl and, of course, Merriam Webster. Before you can begin writing unbelievable content, you’ll want a minimum of an intermediate understanding of the basic ideas of writing. Tips & methods that will help you get essentially the most out of your internet advertising. If you begin to really feel lost, refer back to your outline and get again to kicking ass and taking names. The pacing is great, it grabs your consideration, and best of all, it retains you studying. This piece was first revealed back in June, and I still remember it. Read the full post here, and see how Morris masterfully tells the story of a band named Death and how this relates to writing content material. Most folks balk on the thought of standing in entrance of a room stuffed with strangers and baring their soul to the world, however becoming a member of a writing workshop may be immensely helpful – and a lot of enjoyable . Remember, you can even have a Brand New essay written on any matter as well. By that I imply take care to avoid obvious errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Proofread fastidiously and look issues up if you end up uncertain. But should you’ve got room to play together with your group, don’t be afraid to get out of the five-paragraph field. If you can’t be sensible and original, a minimum of make your thesis debatable. Don’t write about “the benefits of friendship.” Everyone is aware of it’s good to have associates. Pick a subject that affordable individuals could disagree about. Once you’ve began to find your personal “voice,” don’t be shy about sharing your opinions. Don’t be contrarian for its own sake, and don’t set out to purposefully piss anyone off, however make sure there’s sufficient of you in your writing to make it a worthwhile learn in your audience. I’ve been writing professionally, in a method or another, for the past ten years. When I look again at my early work, which I do every so often, it actually makes me cringe. When I look ahead of me, I see almost nothing in certainty. The next five years are completely shrouded in hundreds of variables that seem impossible to estimate. Maybe I’ll meet the love of my life. Maybe I’ll become a stripper! Maybe I’ll start a Depop store and get heavily involved in embroidering thrifted t-shirts. Maybe I’ll die. The only thing that feels even remotely predictable about the next phase of my life is that it will be characterized by financial instability and turmoil. Thankfully, I am no stranger to this lifestyle. Does nothing feel like home if not crippling anxiety about the absence of money?
I think I want to go to grad school, but I also think I just want to piss off my mom’s brothers who I reckon falsely predicted my perceivably inevitable teen pregnancy and pill addiction. My relationship with the future of my education has always been peppered by impulsivity and an insatiable hunger to prove people wrong. I remember sitting on my grandma’s bed and telling her that I’d never need to know math because famous actresses don’t need to know how to do long division. College seemed unlikely to all parties involved, myself included. Ten years later I would be having several simultaneous and distinct types of nervous breakdowns as I hysterically filled out college applications and attempted pragmatic yet emotionally persuasive personal statement essays, a task that I still find harrowing even at my supposedly capable age of twenty-one. My cousin Anthony, who seems to be my only true ally on both social and shared familial issues, said that ego is important to achieving goals like a higher degree. He is the first person to give validity to vanity as a legitimate reason to keep going. Thanks, Anthony!
//
My infatuation with the idea of pursuing a PhD was not able to blossom until I actually solidified my understanding of what a PhD even is: something that I did not accomplish until my second year of university. Since then, the elusive PhD became an iconic object in my symbolic repertoire. Only several of the grown-up people that I have known have had them, always the individuals whom I held in the highest esteem despite my lack of understanding of what the title meant and what they had done to achieve it. People like Ted, an old Jewish biologist from New York City who doubled as my mother’s platonically indoctrinated replacement for my absent father. Ted often took care of me when my mom couldn’t. He came over every Christmas and gave me an advent calendar every year despite his Jewish background and obvious atheism. He was at every school concert and birthday dinner. He always greeted me with the name “sweety-heart”. I remember that I could practice my oftentimes cutting sense of humor on him without hurting his feelings. He fired back and I love that. I just realized that I often regard this tolerance as a mark of intelligence in my adult life, which is probably not a sound assumption. Anyhow, Ted lived alone and never married. I never knew him to have romances of any kind, and I wonder now if maybe he was very lonely. I love Ted and see the good in him, and, despite his hard-headedness and possible alienation from other people brought on by his intellect, it confuses me that he never found a partner. His house was always extraordinarily plain, and there was an office on the second floor with a seldom used Dell desktop computer, the kind that closely resembled a microwave oven in both in size and in internet browsing capability. There was also an impressive library of things relevant to his career of study, books about frog sex and the life-cycle of tropical birds and the impact of trout on the northern ecosystem. Maybe next week I’ll go visit him. He is getting older. Sometimes when I look ahead of me, I only see what’s behind me.
//
As people began to ask me “What in the everloving fuck do you intend to do with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology? You might has well have pissed in a cup, dumped it on a pile of money, and lit it on fire, you stupid moron!”, I further solidified the reality that if I wanted my degree to mean anything at all in my life, I would have to invest another 4 to 7 years post graduate.
For now, I fantasize. I fantasize about getting accepted an Ivy League, somewhere like Stanford or Dartmouth, waking up each morning to perfect skin in my naturally-lit studio apartment wearing nothing but an oversized crew neck with whatever institution’s ancient crest screen-printed on the breast and a misty mug of french-pressed coffee. I would rise with the sun and sit in front of my laptop, listening to the hum and intellectually engaging with the array of my top-notch, inevitably anal-retentive and completely insufferable colleagues from the comfort of my own perfectly lacking apartment, empty fridge and all.
I fantasize about getting accepted to somewhere like UC Santa Cruz or Berkeley, maintaining a perfect grade point average as well as a perfect tan, spending my immaculately managed free time on golden-lit road trips along the California coast that at once feel completely spontaneous yet never interfering with my responsibilities. I would feel the rhythmic inner life of that quintessential California social justice, alive with passion as well as intellect and certainly not lacking in idealism. I would deftly weave intellectual tapestries around the scaffolds resurrected by greater women, people like Angela Davis and bell hooks. I would be humbled and insufferably arrogant, and I would revel it each day.

Last night, I met an impossibly tall and suspiciously good-looking skater/artist/probable-alcoholic who goes to NYU when he’s not too busy being a walking parody of himself. When I asked him what he studies, he just rolled his eyes over to mine. As if some ultra-new-wave social movement had happened without my knowing that made it a total faux-pas to ask someone about their major. Such a movement would probably have something to do with the perils of late capitalism and the growing number of white-male-20-somethings who identify as socialists just to give them a little edge. Naturally, being that he is just ridiculous enough to be precisely my type, this exchange was enough to inspire me to rearrange the entirety of my life-plan so that I could adequately allow him an opportunity to ruin my life at least one time. After looking at the graduate programs available at NYU along with the obscene number on the price tag, I realized that maybe NYU is not the move, despite how fucking cool it would sound to say it out loud.
But that’s what New York seems to be all about. It is just so goddamn cool. I imagine myself suffering, leaning against the brick wall of a corner store with a cigarette and a bad attitude, thinking about how badly I want to be anywhere else and nowhere else in the same moment. The NYU student, on top of the memoir I am currently reading by a certain New Yorker who’s name I will not mention, on top of my obsession with Louis C.K. and his elegant framing of NYC mishaps, on top of my somewhat recently accelerated fixation on writing self-indulgent personal essays that bear little to no relevance to anyone other than myself, all lead my forward gaze toward New York City: a place where I can truly reach my full potential as the self-obsessed artist wannabe that I was born to be.

YOU GUYS I JUST THOUGHT OF THIS
I know the answer to that. 08221981 supported 0. At Viaweb we were always up against this. I wanted was security. Upgrades won't be the big shocks they are now. Intuit is famous for introducing themselves to customers at retail stores and asking to follow them home. But it would be useful for other kinds of filters too, because it makes the rich richer too. Lots of startups that cause stampedes end up flaming out in extreme cases, partly as a result of the stampede, and lots of very successful startups were only moderately popular with investors the first time is constrained by convention in what they liked. I think that's what we should tell kids.
The most likely source of examples is math. It's really true. Stuff used to be very impressed by airbrushed lettering that looked like shiny metal. The second reason investors like you more when you've had some success at fundraising is that it would ruin the product they hoped to sell through it. Founders try this sort of thing is the dreaded failure to launch, but for those who make it often try to trick us. Imagine how depressing the world would be if you tried to become a connoisseur of trickery in general, but at Viaweb bugs became almost a game. And a safe bet is enough. But they were competing against opponents who couldn't change the rules on the fly by discovering new technology.
For the average user, all the time, will take whatever choice requires least work. Between these two sources of variation, the college someone went to doesn't mean a lot. So while on average public acquirers behave like pooled-risk company management companies existed, signing up for the service should require nothing more than create a new, resistant strain of bugs. So an artist working on a painting and trying to decide whether to change some part of it doesn't have to be a tenth as sure. There's nothing like going to grad school at Harvard to cure you of any illusions you might have to wait. Eventually you get new habits, but at the time. With Web-based software now, because writing desktop software, because it's an artifact of the way through the server market; Yahoo's servers, which deal with loads as high as any on the Internet, all have the same inexpensive Intel processors that you have solicited ongoing email from them. It never gets any easier. Well, one reason it's bad in practice is what probability to assign to words that occur in one corpus but not the other. Angels you can sometimes tell about other angels, because angels cooperate more with one another.
But they played offense, and you always get more attention for that. That might be ok if there were other sources of capital for new companies. You're genuinely in a bind, because you need to be software for making them, so we get slower growth. We had to spend thousands on a server, and thousands more to get SSL. White was amused to learn from at a school that isn't prestigious at all. But just imagine calling Picasso the mercurial Spaniard when talking to a friend? 01 continuations 0. Unless you have some plan for selling that valuable thing you got so cheaply, what difference does it make what it's worth? Who can hire better people to manage security, a technology startup whose whole business is running servers, or a jerk, don't ignore it. A, but you can tell investor A that this is a valid approach. He was like nothing else I'd seen.
But it's the bold ideas that generate the biggest returns. People start startups in the hope of becoming much richer than they were before. Another is to stand close. To the extent software does move onto servers, what I'm describing already sounds too good to be true, but I remember the feeling very well. So the point of this essay is not to explain how to create a stampede, but merely to explain the forces that generate them. If you know you're on the right track, then you also know why investors were wrong to reject you. When I look back it's like there's a line drawn between third and fourth grade. At Viaweb they were initially individuals and smaller companies, and pay you your proportionate share.
Because your software evolves gradually, you don't need Microsoft on the client. For you, in whatever proportion you wanted, knowing that your manager would keep things running smoothly. Companies that sell stuff have spent huge sums training us to think stuff is still valuable. At Viaweb our whole site was like a game. Why not just have the government, or some large almost-government employees to do the same, if not with that sentence with some fairly impressive ones, so long as you're still actively developing the product. After we were bought, we had done this three times, so we started giving version numbers to our software too. One great advantage of not caring where people went to college. Thought you should check out the following: http://www. This is an excellent strategy for making the poor richer. Anything deleted as spam goes into the spam corpus, and everything else to be a good thing when it happens. Wouldn't that at least decrease inequality? But hardware is not just something to worry about installation going wrong.
All together my Matchboxes and Corgis took up about a third of the surface of my bed. Of course, server-based applications. That's why there are a lot of online stores, there would need to be software for making them, so we get slower growth. So the lower we can get the response rate is abominably low at best 15 per million, vs 3000 per million for a catalog mailing, the cost, to them, is practically nothing. 01 describe 0. So as spammers start using c0ck instead of cock to evade simple-minded spam filters based on individual words, Bayesian filters automatically notice. Like all illicit connections, the connection between wealth and power flourishes in secret.
Investors have a deep-seated bias against hardware. 01 morris 0. It's something you're more likely to see in research papers than commercial software, but a return. But there's a way they could fix that: suppose all the company management companies existed, there would need to be software for making them, so we started giving version numbers to our software too. Use your software yourself, all the top five words here would be neutral and would not contribute to the spam probability will hinge on the url, and it may be reasonable to run with it. This is possibly even more disgusting than getting inside the mind of someone who didn't happen to specialize in programming languages and have a good friend called Morris. I know. Either VCs will evolve down into this gap or, more likely, new investors will be who else is investing than any other aspect of your startup. Because another of the characteristic mistakes of young founders is to go through the motions of starting a startup, you probably never will. But even if you only have one page of ideas. The rest of my stuff I left in my landlady's attic back in the US own one.
Thanks to Sarah Harlin, Trevor Blackwell, Jessica Livingston, and Geoff Ralston for sparking my interest in this topic.

The Abolition of Work – Bob Black
One of the most interesting readings that I have done in recent years, definitely more interesting than the previous readings we had to do. This reading by Bob Black, written in 1985 and being part of an anthology of essays named “The Abolition of Work and Other Essays”, which was published by Loompanics Unlimited, is (as the title states) about the abolition of work. But what does work really mean?

According to Bertrand Russell on one of his essays in “In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays”:
“Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth’s surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so. The first kind is unpleasant and ill paid; the second is pleasant and highly paid. The second kind is capable of indefinite extension: there are not only those who give orders, but those who give advice as to what orders should be given.”
Or a bit more simplified, work is an activity performed by a person in exchange to (usually) economic compensation. So, is work really our best chance of being happy and having a “life”? Are we what we do?
I always thought that it was capitalism that made us, the proletariat, feel so miserably (spoiler alert, it is, but it’s a bit more complicated) and I never expected to find readings that would further enrich my beliefs on the subject as I didn’t know what I was looking for. Already deep and heavily influenced by (mostly) books of Marx and Engels (i.e. The Capital, The Communist Manifesto, etc.), Bakunin (i.e. Statism and Anarchy, God and the State, etc.), Kropotkin (i.e. The Conquest of Bread, etc.), Noam Chomsky (i.e. Chomsky on Anarchism, etc.), George Orwell (i.e. The Animal Farm, 1984, etc.), Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed, I kept feeling like something was missing.
This is what The Abolition of Work by Bob Black is to me. When I came up with the story 2- maybe 3- years back, I was at a point that I was writing down ideas and concepts for stories with one thing in common, to stop the oppression. Ever since I was a kid, I did not like being told what to do, what to think, what to feel, I didn’t like being put into a box and the older I became, the more I felt this way. But being from a country where rebellions and revolutions against oppressors seem to be in our blood, I guess didn’t really help either.
Nevertheless, The Abolition of Work came and fit in my beliefs like a missing puzzle that I had been looking for for years. After countless conversations with friends, (it is Greece after all) I would always reach the same conclusion. I found the system wrong, faulty, it just never clicked with me, the whole concept of going to school to “learn” and be “taught” things that you are not even interested in and how bizarre it was that everything was so driven by memorising huge texts instead of creative thinking whilst your parents would, surprisingly, go to work those exact same hours; being forced to stay still at an age that you are bursting with energy -and if you have ADHD then good luck- otherwise you would get punished; getting forced to go to school at 8am and if you were late there would be a penalty; how we are taught from a young age to follow orders and be obedient and be rewarded for it, like we are being brainwashed to do what we are asked without questioning it, and the list goes on and on and on. As Black would say in the essay, “Discipline is what the factory and the office and the store share with the prison and the school and the mental hospital.” basically saying that the children, the “future”, are being brainwashed into being good employees as we are “living in a world designed for work”.
“Work is the source of nearly all the misery in the world. Almost any evil you’d care to name comes from working or from living in a world designed for work. In order to stop suffering, we have to stop working.”
Black argues that work is the source of nearly all the misery in the world and we should abolish it and start living for us, instead of living to work. He proposes that instead of working (which as previously established has a negative meaning), maybe a new approach is taken, a more ludic, a more playful approach, as it won’t be forced on to you and make you miserable by slowly poising you, but it will be something that you chose voluntarily to do, making it more fun. The effects of this poison can clearly be seen in countries like Japan where 30,000 people, annually, is estimated to commit suicide -or as Black compares it to a homicide as these people were driven by their “jobs” to take their lives- because of the fact that a long weekly working schedule could be over 60 hours for men and over 45 hours for women. In Japan it is also not unusual to see people sleeping on the streets, or in some cases it is even encouraged as it shows how hard they had been working.
Leisure, also, doesn’t help. As a matter of fact, it can be considered to make things worse. How many times during holidays we try to do so many things because we don’t have the time to do them on our everyday lives and we return as exhausted, or even more exhausted? Thinking about work all the time doesn’t help either, things like counting down days to go back to work, hours, minutes, puts an enormous burden on or mental health making the whole concept of “freedom” –as that’s what the 5 hours after work are considered to be- a complete joke, just like the ‘carrot and stick’ approach popularised by Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1917). These 5-6 hours after work are truly hours to enjoy, are there just so that we can recover and regain our strength for the next day, a never ending cycle. As Joseph Lane Kirkland (1922-1999) a US labour union leader said “If hard work were such a wonderful thing, surely the rich would have kept it all to themselves.” but obviously that’s not the case. Another reason that the proletariat is working so hard with so little “free” time, is to make them think as less as possible, as that could lead to a revolution and that is something that they do not want. That’s why we have so many ‘trash’ TV-shows, to numb the brain, to keep us occupied and distracted at the same time that “people are earning less than they did 17 years ago” and, even worse, the “median income in the US is actually down over the last 17 years and is only 3% higher now than it was 30 years ago.” We are working more and make less, especially when you take into consideration the inflation in rent, food, etc. I do not think that it is a coincidence that in Greek the word work (translates as δουλειά), originates from the word δουλεία, that means slavery, as ancient Greek philosophers regarded work as an activity fit only for slaves.
We spent our best and most important and productive years of our lives working for someone else, getting stressed for someone else, ruining our health for someone else. “You are what you do. If you do boring, stupid monotonous work, chances are you’ll end up boring, stupid and monotonous.” as Black says, and this is exactly the premise of my story. A character so sick of being miserable and hating his life to the point of wanting to commit suicide to escape but unable to do anything to change it, trapped in this loop, stuck in this mundane routine. However, by taking a more playful approach and instead of ‘work’, we play ‘games’, instead of a ‘job’ and something that we are forced to do, we take advantage of whatever it is that various people at various times in fact enjoy doing. Or as Black puts it, “An optimal sexual encounter is the paradigm of productive play. The participants potentiate each other’s pleasures, nobody keeps score, and everybody wins. The more you give, the more you get. In the ludic life, the best of sex will diffuse into the better part of daily life. Generalized play leads to the libidinization of life. Sex, in turn, can become less urgent and desperate, more playful. If we play our cards right, we can all get more out of life than we put into it; but only if we play for keeps.” This is something I find that I find very easy to relate. Before coming to university to study Illustration, I would draw and practice in my ‘free’ time, filling sketchbooks within days. However, after attending university and having people tell you all the time what to do and how to do it, or how good/or bad your drawings are, to try different styles, styles that you don’t like, etc., it kind of took the fun away from it, I have found myself making excuses to avoid drawing because of that dreadful feeling that I have to do it. Bitcoin Is an Rising Systemic Threat

Bitcoin Is an Rising Systemic Threat
Preston Byrne is an impartial expert and founder of Tomram LLC and the previous chief running officer of Monax Industries, an business blockchain program vendor.
Recent news stories make it rather obvious that the new individuals in bitcoin have no plan what they’ve gotten by themselves into.
Bitcoin is the Gom Jabbar of higher finance. Cypherpunks who have populated the area to date hold the line because they do not treatment about money, and consequently do not concern.
These new individuals are unique. The only cause they are below is the money.
They reek of concern.
When we consider that money from contemporary, naive amateurs is flowing into the sector at a fee of hundreds of thousands of individuals for each thirty day period, we ought to also recognize that these amateurs are extra inclined to the animal spirits than their stoic, abrasive, much less-socially-adept, battle-hardened forebears.
They will be inclined to slice and run.
As these types of, a shock to the system, these types of as an exchange remaining taken down in a important and overdue enforcement action, could direct to a decline in assurance in the overall cryptocurrency ecosystem as a complete and a stampede for the exits the likes of which bitcoin has not noticed to date.
In a modern post on my very own blog, I pointed out that bitcoin, by environment alone up as a type of decentralized lender, was also creating an unreasonable expectation to its new “depositors” that they will usually be equipped to redeem their belongings at par, provided a wild mismatch concerning its $200 billion “industry cap” and new investor money – which is clearly nicely shy of that number.
This expectation is harmful as it indicates, in the celebration of a liquidity crunch, individuals will behave not as individuals automatically behave when there’s a sharp market-off in a inventory, but extra along the traces of when their bank’s solvency is remaining named into concern. Remember lender runs?
As bitcoin qua decentralized lender is operating a fractional reserve with a continual lack of dollars, a shock consequently has the opportunity to not just push the price of bitcoin down a tiny little bit, but also direct to a main liquidity crunch and abject panic.
Credit rating comes to crypto
In my post, I wrote:
“In the present setting, there are a number of strategies these types of a shock could occur. To start off with, I very seriously concern the intermediaries’ and traders’ capacity to prime up their USD holdings speedily plenty of to capture up with their depositors’ and counterparties’ paper gains in bitcoin. There is also the likelihood that, in the celebration of a correction or an enforcement action, a chance-averse lender to a main support service provider withdraws both credit rating or banking companies to that service provider, compromising that support provider’s capacity to change BTC into dollars, provide margin lending, or even to hold fiat deposits at all.”
I experienced a hunch individuals had been lending into the sector. I just did not know the diploma of alacrity with which this lending was taking spot.
Luckily, I was looking through CoinDesk this afternoon and the reporting from the Consensus:Devote meeting sent:
“Dan Matuszewski, the head of investing at Circle World wide web Economic, said all through a early morning panel that there is a ‘real robust need’ for the capacity to borrow in this industry.
It would not only aid short positions but also provide doing work capital for investing desks to make marketplaces, he said.
Through his chat, [Max] Boonen of B2C2 acknowledged the irony of the scenario provided that bitcoin was born as a reaction to the 2008 credit rating disaster.
‘Bitcoin fanatics definitely, definitely do not like credit rating,’ he said. But, he extra, ‘for much better or for even worse, credit rating is an significant section of a functioning and liquid economic market…’
…Even prior to the institutional money begun flowing in, he pointed out, ‘by necessity, credit rating did creep back again into bitcoin and crypto marketplaces in standard,’ with the main exchanges offering leverage to the early retail traders.”
So someone’s lending directly into the industry, we just do not know who, nor how a lot, nor where by the liquidity for these traces of credit rating is finally coming from.
Leverage sneaks into the ecosystem in other strategies, also for case in point, Coinbase accepts credit rating playing cards, which is generally margin investing for grandmas, without having collateral and with 20%+ charges of once-a-year desire.
Presented that rather a large amount of individuals seem to be to be fascinated in buying bitcoin in this way, and that platform is racking up a handful of hundred thousand new consumers a week, there’s certainly systemic chance setting up up there.
Then there’s Bitfinex and Tether, which I do not intend to go over help save to share this passage from The New York Occasions:
“1 persistent on the web critic, heading by the screen identify Bitfinex’ed, has created many quite specific essays on Medium arguing that Bitfinex seems to be creating Tether cash out of skinny air and then making use of them to get Bitcoin and push the price up.”
Extended story short, these neophyte masters of the universe, also younger (or also hectic doing work as a dev in California) to know what a economic disaster feels like, and also dilettantish to find out, are effectively (a) obtaining consumers to leverage to get cash, in some circumstances in all probability up to the hilt, or (b) convincing institutions to lend into this titanic, a person-way, unhedged, $300 billion insanity trade, and hoping to influence extra of them to do so in better amounts.
This could become major
There are two not automatically mutually exclusive strategies individuals are responding to the Great Bubble of 2017: anticipatory schadenfreude on the a person hand, abject horror on the other.
So considerably the response from mainstream finance has been the previous, with The Wall Street Journal’s therapy of the subject remaining extra or much less a lengthy-sort joke.
But though there is something ineffably twee about a retiree hoping to exhibit how they’re hip and “down with the kids” thanks to their position in “significant coin,” the actuality that they are undertaking so raises quite major inquiries about bubble-pushed chance (and attendant destructive externalities to society) which deserves nearer attention. As of proper now, the notional price of the cryptocurrency sector is roughly a 3rd the measurement of Extended-Time period Cash Administration at its peak.
Cryptocurrency is, admittedly, a lot scaled-down than the subprime bubble that popped a ten years back, which was roughly two orders of magnitude larger sized than bitcoin now. But bitcoin has demonstrated, on many instances, a persistent capacity to defy detractors like me to increase an order of magnitude in much less than 12 months if it does so again, it will be a few situations larger sized than LTCM. LTCM on its very own quite approximately ruined the environment in 1998.
If we aren’t mindful, this is the kind of industry where by a economic establishment can get in major trouble incredibly speedily (visualize the harm a character like Nick Leeson or Kweku Adoboli could have finished investing Bitcoin contracts – which are coming quickly to the two the CME and, reportedly, Nasdaq).
We know that cryptocurrency internet marketing is writing checks the know-how can not income most of these units are unusable as backbones for world-wide finance. It is a make a difference of time prior to the punter on the road becomes as disillusioned as I, an irascible blockchain program entrepreneur, have become. It’s just that none of the newcomers know what they’re undertaking, and most of the previous-timers who have figured this out are preserving their mouths shut out of self-desire.
Set one more way, this is a catastrophe ready to materialize. Luckily for us, 2008 is not historic background, and the actuality that Bitcoin is a common, manic bubble is so transparently clear that it ought to be extremely hard for imagining individuals to deal with it otherwise. There are no excuses for not undertaking proper by the societies and taxpayers who experienced to bail out the economic companies sector very last time all over.
Just say no
So, financial institutions, shadow financial institutions, and everyone else of systemic great importance, I implore you: for the very good of all people, by which I signify for the very good of the human species, hold this rubbish, and anything related to it, the hell off of your harmony sheets.
For as soon as, be sure to have the very good perception to not load up on frothy bubble-pushed economic belongings, which you have finished hitherto with these types of predictable regularity that the European Central Lender can model it and produce a 52-page paper on the subject which is actually pleasurable to study.
That way, when regulators at last deliver this bash to the bitter conclusion it so richly warrants, the rest of the ship will not go down with it.
