looking back was it a little insane YES however it was very fun and we enjoyed ourselves and it made our very long boring school days much more entertaining…sadly i’m not really friends with that girl anymore (she was lowkey crazy i can’t even lie like i’m not sad we’re not friends because i miss her but because we had some fun times together) but the lore we (mostly me honestly) came up with was so extensive and deep i still think abt it sometimes

if sae was like his miraverse counterpart he’d fr be a fav of mine already but alas this is what we have to work with

i think it’s really interesting but also very true!! like if you have a fire artist then you can get away with doing much less actual storytelling because your artist carries you…i don’t think that’s a critique of all animanga because there are several that are only elevated by the art and the art serves a purpose in tandem with the writing — the problem to me is when the art is what’s carrying the writing or is filling in holes that the writing does not bother dealing with!! for example attack on titan — it has its own problems which i won’t touch on atm because i’m exhausted by it but in this specific aspect it outdoes jjk in the sense that you could tell the story in just words (and believe me, i have) without making anything up and it flows fairly well/doesn’t feel like anything is missing or glossed over, and the manga panels/anime just serve to give shape to the story the words are telling instead of carrying the story along on their own. omg that tik tok i was talking about had a comment that made me crack up it was like “people will see a single very simple parallel and immediately declare it peak writing” and that’s honestly so true 😭 in a similar vein whenever people praise jjk for its female cast…name one female character with a strong storyline and agency and whatnot (everyone points to maki as if she didn’t literally just become gege’s way of putting toji back in the story) they had potential but NONE of them were utilized in the way they could’ve been and to be honest the treatment of hana/angel was ABHORRENT i honestly really liked her and she could’ve been such a fascinating character but instead she was just. obsessed with a man who dgaf about her. like COME ON NOW i thought we were PAST this trope 😩 that said jjk isn’t horrible utter complete trash but everyone praises it as being so much different than other shounens but when you examine it closely it’s really not it just has a bit more angst than the typical shounen might.

STAN ORV FOR CLEAR SKIN!! as someone who read the novel and didn’t even look at the webcomic i think orv is a perfect example of how convoluted magic systems and large-scale battles CAN be explained properly and still remain awe-inspiring even without any visuals!! like the novel had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and there were absolutely zero two page spreads AND it had a shit translation like that’s skill fr!! also the female characters…the sheer THOUGHT put into the story (there are so many little details woven into it it’s insane)…the way different cultures are referenced and carefully researched so that they don’t feel like jokes (don’t even get me started on the jjk america arc idec about making fun of americans but what was the point even?? it was literally never brought up again) added in for no reason…absolutely enormous cast but they all get development and conclusions and feel like they were added for a reason??? super super fascinating dynamics between the main three characters (kim dokja, han sooyoung, yoo joonghyuk)?? MALE AND FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS??? MALE AND FEMALE CHARACTERS THAT LOVE EACH OTHER IN WAYS THAT AREN’T JUST ROMANTIC??????? this is what’s considered ACTUAL peak i think it’s so brain dead when jjk fans argue that jjk is so popular so it has to be better written than things like orv (the two fandoms have a lot of beef on tik tok for some reason) like come on now one is an anime and the other is a web novel obviously jjk is more popular…however i think a lot of jjk fans would actually quite like orv if they could bring themselves to sit down and read it!!

i agree i think in order to fit so many characters into the random categories you have to simplify them all so much and strip them of their complexities because otherwise you can’t cram as many characters as possible in there 😭 and yeah tumblr drama is so insane i wish people who put their energy into making callout posts would go work on their career or something…like let’s build our linkedin profiles!! let’s talk to people in real life!!

Note these streams are ongoing. At this point I will also point you to a related post which is cliff notes of the Dragon Age chapter in Jason Schreier’s book Blood Sweat and Pixels.

Dragon Age II

DAO had the longest development period in BioWare history. In contrast DA2 had the shortest

Initially DA2 was going to be an expansion to DAO. A few months in EA said “Yeah, expansions like these don’t sell very well, so let’s make it a sequel.” So it suddenly became DA2 and they had to make it even bigger, although they still only had 1.5 years of time in which to do this

Production of DA2 officially lasted only 9 months, and at the time the team was still supporting live content for DAO! They finished development that January after the design team crunched all the way through the holiday period that year. Then it went to cert 9 times

The limited time they had is why the story takes place mostly in and around 1 city, and over 7 years (so it was temporal, rather than over physical distance, because a more expansive world would have taken more irl time to make)

They had no time to review even the main plot. Mike Laidlaw pitched the idea of 3 stories taking place at different points in the PC’s life, tied together by Varric’s recollections of events. DG rolled with this and made 1 presentation on the idea. This presentation was then approved and off they went

As they were writing DG realized that there was going to be no oversight and that everything was going to be a ‘first draft’. “Because nobody had time.” He sat down with the writers and said “Look, here’s the conditions we’re working under. A lot of what we’re putting out is gonna be raw. We’re not going to get the editing we need. We’re not going to get the kind of iteration we need. So I’m going to trust you all to do your best work.”

Looking back, DG has mixed feelings on DA2. “A lot of corners were cut. The public perception was that it was smaller than DAO. That’s a sin on its own.”

Despite this he thinks DA2 has some of the best writing in the series, especially character-wise. The DA2 chars are his favorite

The pace with which production progressed may in some ways have helped. “When we do a lot of revision, we often file away [as in buff off] some of the good writing as well. Somehow DA2′s whirlwind process resulted in some really good writing”

The pace meant chars landed on the writers in various stages of completion. For example Isabela was fairly defined due to appearing in DAO. In contrast Varric at the start was just that single piece of widely-shown concept art

Varric was conceived as a storyteller not a fighter. His skills are talking and bullshitting. Hence the question became, so what does this guy do in combat? The direction was to make him as different as possible to Oghren, so not a warrior. He couldn’t be a dual-wielding rogue in order to differentiate him from Bela. But you can’t really picture this guy with a bow. “For a dwarf, it would probably be a crossbow. We didn’t have crossbows, or we only had crossbows for the darkspawn. And they were part of the models. We didn’t have a separate crossbow that was equip-able by the chars. They had to like, crop one off a darkspawn and remodel it. And that became Bianca” (quote: Mary Kirby)

“Dwarven mages are exceedingly rare.” [???]

If DAO was a classic fantasy painting, DA2 was a screenshot from a Kurosawa film or a northern Renaissance painting. (Here Matt Rhodes was commenting on art style)

John Epler: “In any one of our games, there’s a 95% chance that if you turn the camera away from what it’s looking at, you’ll see all kinds of janky stuff. The moment we know the camera is no longer facing someone, we no longer care what happens to them. We will teleport people around. We will jump people around. We will literally have someone walk off screen and then we will shift them 1000 meters down, because we’re fixing some bug.” John also talked about this camera stuff in a recent charity Twitch stream for Gamers For Groceries. There’s a writeup of that stream here

Designing Kirkwall pushed concept artists to the limits of visual storytelling, because it has a long history that they wanted to be present. It was once the hub of Tevinter’s slave empire, so it needed to look brutal and harsh, but it also then needed to feel reclaimed, evolved, and with elements of contemporary Free Marches culture

The initial plan was for DA titles to be distinguished by subtitles not numbers, so that each experience could stand on its own rather than feel like a sequel or continuation. (My note: New PCs in each entry make sense then when you consider this and other factoids we know like how DA is the story of the world not of any one PC). Later, DA2′s name was made DA2 in a bid to more clearly connect the game to its predecessor. For DAI they returned to the original naming convention. (My note: so I’d reckon they’d be continuing the subtitle naming convention for DA4)

DA2 was initially code-named “Nug Storm”, strictly internally

The Cancelled DA2 Expansion - Exalted March

This was a precursor to DAI

It was meant to bridge the gap between DA2 and DAI

It focused on the fallout from Kirkwall’s explosion, with Cory serving as the villain

Meredith’s red lyrium statue was basically going to infest Kirkwall and it would end up [with what would end up] the red templars taking over Kirkwall and essentially being Cory’s army

To stop him Hawke would have recruited various factions, including Bela’s Felicisima Armada and the Qunari at Estwatch, forcing Hawke to split loyalties and risk relationships in the process

It was meant to bring DA2′s story to an end and end in Varric’s death. DG was very happy with this because all of DA2 is Varric’s tale. The expansion was supposed to start at the moment Cassandra’s interrogation of him ended in the present. “And we finished off the story with Varric having this heroic death.” It tied things up and would have broken many fan hearts, something BioWare writers notoriously enjoy. But between a transition to the new Frostbite engine and the scope of DAI, the decision was made to cancel EM, work any hard-to-lose concepts into DAI, and in the process save Varric’s life. DG has talked about the Varric dying thing before

Concept art for EM explored new areas previously not depicted in the DA universe, with costumes that reflected next steps for familiar chars. Varric was going to war, what would he have worn? With Anders, if he survived DA2, the plan was to present a redeemed Warden

A char that vaguely resembled Sera in DAI was first concepted for EM. This fact was mentioned near this concept art (see the female elf) and this concept art of Bethany with the blond bob

The writers sketched out plans to end it with Hawke having the option to marry their LI. This included alternate ceremonies for party members like Bethany and Sebastian if the player opted not to wed. There was even a wedding dress made for Hawke. This asset made it into DAI (Sera and Cullen’s weddings in Trespasser). The dress can also be seen in DAI during an ambient NPC wedding after completing a chain of war table missions

The destruction of a Chantry was explored in concept art as it might have happened in EM. This idea ended up carrying over to the beginning of DAI. (My note: Lol, the idea that DA2 could have had 2 Chantries being destroyed in it 😆)

World of Thedas

Sheryl Chee and Mary Kirby started with “a disgusting little dish called fluffy mackerel pudding”. In the middle of DAO’s busy dev period one of them (they can’t remember who) found a recipe online for this, scanned in from a 70s cookbook. “I don’t understand why it was fluffy. Why would you want fluffy mackerel pudding?” MK says. “We loved it so much we included it in a DAO codex.”

This led them to create more food for Thedas, full recipes included, like a Fereldan turnip and barley stew from MK and SC’s Starkhaven fish and egg pie. The fish pie became Sebastian’s favorite. “To me it made sense for it to be fish pie because a lot of the Free Marches are on the coast”, SC says, “It was something that was popular in medieval times, so I thought, let’s make a fish pie! I looked at medieval recipes and I concocted a fish pie which I fed to my partner, and he was like ‘This is not terrible’”

For WoT the whole studio was asked to contribute family recipes which might have a place in Thedas. SC adapted these to fit in one Thedosian culture or another, including a beloved banana bread that localization producer Melanie Fleming would regularly bake to keep the DA team motivated. “Melanie’s banana bread got us through Inquisition”

DAI

It says part of DAI takes place in or near the border with Nevarra [???]

This game was aimed to be bigger than DA2 and even DAO in every conceivable way

The first hour had to do a lot of heavy lifting, tying together the events of DAO and DA2 while introducing a new PC, new followers etc in the aftermath of the big attack. DG rewrote it 7 times then Lukas Kristjanson did 2 more passes

DG: “Our problem is always that our endings are so important, but we leave them to last, when we have no time. I kept pushing on DAI: ‘Can we work on the ending now? Can we work on the ending now? Can we do it early on?’ Because I knew exactly what it was going to be. But despite the fact that it kept getting scheduled, whenever the schedule started falling behind, it kept getting pushed back... so, of course, it got left til last again.”

“The reveal of the story’s real antagonist, Solas, a follower until the end, when he betrayed the player”. “Solas’ story remains a main thread in Inquisition’s long-awaited follow-up” [these aren’t DG quotes, just bits of general text]

Over the course of development they had 8 full-time writers and 4 editors working on it. Other writers joined later to help wrangle what ended up being close to 1 million words of dialogue and unspoken text. While many teams moved to a more open concept style of work for DAI, the writers remained tucked away in their own room, a choice DG says was necessary, given how much they talked. All the talking had a purpose ofc as if someone hit a bump or wall in their writing they would open the problem up to the room

As writing on a project like DAI progresses, the writers grow punchier and weirder things make it into the game. This is especially the case towards the end of a project (they get tired, burned out)

Banter and codexes require less ‘buy-in’ (DG has talked about this concept a few times on the Twitch streams) from other designers. DG liked to leave banter for last as a reward because it was fun. Banter begins as lists of topics for 2 followers to discuss. These may progress over time or be one off exchanges. One banter script can balloon to well over 10k words. “The banter was always huge because we were always like, laughing, and really at that point, our fields of fucks were rather barren, so we would just do whatever”

The bog unicorn happened pretty much by accident. It was designed by Matt Rhodes and was one of his fav things to design. They needed horse variations and he had already designed an undead variant which was a bog mummy [bog body]. irl these are preserved in a much different way to traditional mummies. When someone dies in a bog their skin turns black and raisin-like. The examples we know of tend to have bright red hair for whatever reason. It’s a very striking look and MR wanted to do a horse version of this as he thought it’d be neat. 5 mins before the review meeting for it he had a big ‘Aha!’ moment, quickly looked up a rusty old Viking sword, and photoshopped it through its skull like that was how it died. “And I was like, ‘I just made a unicorn. Alright, in it goes!’” It got approved. “So we built the thing. It fit. It told a little story”

With the irl Inquisition longsword, one of the objects they tested its cleaving ability on was a plush version of Leliana’s nug Schmooples

The concept art team explored a wide variety of visuals for the Inquisitor’s signature mark. It needed to look powerful and raw but couldn’t look like a horrific wound. In some cases, as cool as the idea looked on paper, they just weren’t technically feasible, especially as they had to be able to fit on any number of different bodies

Bug report: “Endlessly spawning mounts! At one point during development, Inquisitors could summon a new horse every time they whistled, allowing them to amass a near infinite number of eager steeds that faithfully followed them across Thedas. “You could go charging across levels and they’d all gallop behind you,” Jen Cheverie says, “It was beautiful.” Trotting into town became an epic horse siege as a tidal wave of mounts enveloped the streets. Jen called it her Army of Ponies”

The giants came from DA Week, an internal period when devs can pursue different individual creative projects that in some way benefit DA. They also had a board game from one of these that they were going to put in but they didn’t have time. It’s referenced though. It was dwarven chess

Josie’s outfit is made of gold silk and patterned velvet, with leather at her waist. She carries “an ornate ledger” and she has “an ornamented collar sitting around her neck, finished by a brilliant red ruby, like a drop of Antivan wine in a sunbeam”

Iron Bull’s armor is leather. His loose pantaloons and leather boots give him agility to charge

On DAI in particular, concept artists took special care to make sure costumes would be realistic, at least in a practical ‘this obeys the laws of physics and textiles’ sense. “While on Inquisition, we thought about cosplay from a concept art perspective. Given how incredible a lot of [cosplays] are, I now am not worried about them. In fact in some cases in the future I want to throw them curveballs like, ‘All right, you clever bastards. Let’s see if you can do this!’”

2 geese that nested on the office building and had chicks were named Ganders and Arishonk (it wasn’t known who was the mom or the dad). Other possible names were Carver Honke, Bethany Honke, Urdnot Pecks, Quackwall, Cassandra Pentagoose, the Iron Bill, Shepbird, Garroose, Admiral Quackett, Scout Honking, HChick-47 and Darth Malgoose

Bug report: “The surprising adventures of Ser Noodles!” DAI was the first time the series had a mount feature, meaning this had a lot of bugs. A lot of the teams’ favorite bugs were to do with the mounts. There was a period of time where the Inquisitor’s horse seemed to lose all bone and muscle in its legs. They had a week or so where all quadruped legs were broken. It was a bit noticeable in things like nugs and other small beasties but the horse was insanely obvious. “The first time we summoned the horse [for this] and started running around, the entire QA exploration room just exploded with laughter.” Its legs flapped around like cooked fettucine, leading testers to lovingly nickname it Ser Noodles. At galloping speeds the legs almost looked like helicopter blades, especially when footage was set to classic pieces such as Wagner’s Flight of the Valkyries

For DAI the artists were asked questions like “What would Morrigan wear to a formal ball? Can Cassandra pull off a jaunty hat?”

On DAI storyboarding became the norm. John Epler: “Cinematic design for the longest time was the Wild West. It was ‘here’s a bunch of content, now do it however you want’, which resulted in some successes and some failures.” Storyboarding gave designers a consistent visual blueprint based on ideas from designers, writers and concept artists

Quote from a storyboard by Nick Thornborrow (the Inquisitor going into the party at the end of basegame sequence): “Until Corypheus revealed himself they could not see the single hand behind the chaos. A magister and a darkspawn combined. The ultimate evil. So evil. Eviler than puppy-killers and egg farts combined.”

A general note on concept art:

In the early stages of any project, before the concept artists are aware of any writing, they like to just draw what they think cool story moments could be. It’s not unusual for the team to then be inspired by these and fold them into the game as the project progresses

- they had 20-30 options for orchid explosion by fournier, cristin pitched some too that she “does not remember!” (she said that very cute)

- they talk about how great june squibb is and how andy is impressed that she wasn’t complaining about the cold/shooting at 5am/the fact that they improved a lil bit.  “she doesn’t not give a what”

- during the make out scene on the rock cristin goes “ohhh ~spicy~”

- they also had to have a snake wrangler come out before they shot that scene and he was like “uhh i think it’s good?”

- andy was excited about having to get shot by an arrow when he was reading the script (it was also the moment they realised this movie was zanier than first thought)

- the cave was the same place they shot the old batman movies

- they started working on palm springs on november 9th 2016…. hence the wedding date

- cristin said they did about 30 takes (at least) of her opening her eyes/sitting up.. basically the entire first half of the first day shooting she spent doing the same thing

- the beer is fictional and has a meaning behind it.. the tortoise is to do with a myth about the universe or smth

- orange in the movie significies intimacy and that whole montage is coloured orange to show them falling in love

- they loved shooting the tent scene

- the first night they filmed it there was a sandstorm and rain and they had to hide under a tarp and they came back the next night and they were able to get looser with it bc it was the last day of shooting and they’d basically done the whole thing the night before

- the dinosaurs bit was a “symbolic moment between the characters - they are 2 people who don’t believe they can be loved so they’re feeling something impossible and therefore they should see something impossible”

- the wake-ups were like an acting exercise in a way bc each wake up was diff emotionally based on where they were in the loop

- nyles finally cares about something (her) for the first time in maybe hundreds of years and he immediately gets slapped down :(((

- “suck my dick officer bitch” was cristin’s ad lib!!! (if anyone makes a montage of her life’s work she would like it to either begin or end w suck my dick officer bitch, andy said why not both)

- “for some reason i rolled up one of my sleeves [after nyles woke up after their fight] and then we couldn’t get out of it so that was a lesson! it was a terrible choice”

- andy loves the overhead pool shot

- everytime andy watches the confrontation at the wedding he feels terrible for tala, we love an empathetic king

- re: roy’s arc andy talks about how important it is to relish what you’ve got and it was v v v v sweet

- everyone laughed so hard in the arrow/garbage bin scene

- apparently tyler’s shirtlessness in the shower was distracting for people in early tests and they had to tone it back w colour correction 💀

- cristin was like “did that happen when i had to take my shirt off?” and andy was like “uh huh yeah”

- the goat was on set for a couple of days + apparently cristin would talk to it in between takes 🥺🥺🥺 can she get any cuter

- max talked about how they lucky they were to get andy and cristin and how the movie wouldn’t have worked without them, they were so on the same wavelength and there was an early meeting where nobody else could get a word in bc they were talking so much

- nobody was in it for the paycheck, “it was for the love, and dare i say it, for the art” <3

- they took 3-4 nights to shoot the entire wedding, andy can Not stress enough how much they were rushing

- they haven’t busted out any bloopers yet bc they used pretty much every frame they could/reused them in different places

- cristin doesn’t want to know if nana knows bc the mystery of it is what makes the movie so great!

- andy said there’s no definitive answer to a lot of stuff bc a lot of the people working on the movie had diff opinions

- the french song w the slo mo bit of sarah in the bar was cristin’s choice

- andy is v confused why people think spuds is nyles’ dad,, he’s just tricking him into getting a ride and andy’s sorry to everyone who thought it was real

- cristin liked that the payoff at the end felt like payoff while still staying true to who nyles and sarah are and not just super romantic bc “it’s a romcom!” [andy said throwing his arms in the air]

- cloudbursting was andy’s idea from the very first meeting about the movie but we been knew

- andy: “here’s the ending! nobody knows what it means!”

- the family at the end was the producer’s family, they drove a very long way to do that 2 second scene lol

- andy and cristin were swaying to when the morning comes at the end 🥺

- andy clapped and shouted “WELL PRODUCED” when his/tli’s credit came up hahaha

So! Since this is the first Voxtagram post, lemme include the big ol’ disclaimer that’s going to apply to all of these posts: we don’t yet know how canon these accounts are.

This is why they’re broadly accepted as canon: as far as I have been able to track back (correct me if you know better & have a source!), the first of these accounts, Blitzo’s, was found by fans because Vivzie followed it when it was brand new. Since then, new accounts have been discovered as they follow/interact with each other. Some official artists have interacted “in character” with the accounts. The accounts accurately announced when the “Addict” music video was going to come out, and some art posted before “Addict” used imagery that was also used in the music video. So either the accounts are definitely made by the canon creators or else being made by somebody who’s got inside access to the creators.

But, as far as I have seen, nobody on the Hazbin crew has taken credit for running them. More importantly, nobody has said how canon the blogs are. Maybe every image/word posted by these accounts is 100% accurate/canonical; or maybe the art is canon but the roleplaying in the comments is noncanon goofy fanservice; etc. We don’t know yet. It appears safest to say these accounts are probably mostly canon—but take it with a grain of salt.

So until we’re directly informed how canon the Voxtagram accounts are, Voxtagram posts are going to be tagged “#semi canon” (the same tag I’ll be using for stream transcripts) to indicate that it appears to be info coming from the creators, but it may or may not still be canon/accurate by the time the full shows and comics are released.

12. name of your favorite playlist? I prefer to listen to full albums rather than playlists, but I have a few favourites on Spotify. Born to Run 150BPM, Infinite Indie Folk, Irish Folk: Jigs and Reels, All Out 80s/90s/00s. I also love scene/pop-punk playlists.

14. favorite non-chocolate candy? Message Hearts (or anything with that texture), the red pack of starbursts (the UK version is vegan). Does Turkish Delight count because if so then that is my fave. I also like gummies if they’re vegan.

15. favorite book you read as a school assignment? To Kill a Mockingbird (high school), or The Bloody Chamber (uni), or Hamlet (uni)

16. most comfortable position to sit in? One foot under me, the other foot out to the other side, but both in the same position (if the surface is flat), or knees up.

17. most frequently worn pair of shoes? I own a lot of shoes so there isn’t really a single pair I wear the most. Recently my Air Force 1s, I’m trying to wear them in because the previous owner didn’t so the cause blisters.

18. ideal weather? Cold, overcast, rainy, still. Or without the rain. or snow (as long as I’m not going in the car and I can go crunch my shoes in it xD

19. sleeping position? Either side, but my body is kinda rotated towards the bed so it’s like half way between on my stomach and on my side.

23. strange habits? I have so many strange habits that I have become one myself. Nothing actually stands out though because 99% of it is because of my brain.

25. first song you remember hearing? Maybe Dancing Queen by ABBA, definitely the first I remember dancing to, but my dad loves music so I grew up with a constant stream of it.

26. favorite activity to do in warm weather? Suffer xD when I’m able to do so comfortably I’d love to go out looking for pretty stones, and nice sticks with my fiance, also would like to go on picnics with him, or a friend if I had one.

27. favorite activity to do in cold weather? Baking, drawing, crafts, standing in the rain. Everything.

31. what outfit do you wear to kick ass and take names? I think maybe I’m not gutsy or whatever enough, but also unpredictable. I wear whatever I like, and I’m just as likely to cry in all of them as I am to accidentally get in a fight.

Living with my parents who I have a very toxic relationship with. Living in a single very overfilled room. Trying to not spend money so that I can save up to move next year. Nightmares about my trauma. Either the house is haunted or there’s a build up of negative energy (probably that).

52. favorite font? I always liked the look of all of the script style fonts (freestyle, french, lucida, lucida calligraphy, Edwardian, Palace) but they’re not accessible so for anything people will actually see (which is literally nothing) I always go with arial.

Slight rash on one finger because I’m sensitive to what is in a lot of hand washing products apparently (never an issue until the pandemic), one broken finger nail that is a bit shorter than the rest. Not painted nails because energy. I always wear my engagement ring, usually I wear several other rings but with how my skin is being I thought I’d better not for a while.

ok so arti’s unnecessary opinion time

Just wanna give a disclaimer that these are just my sort of thoughts in general, and are in no way an attempt to demean, attack, or cause drama about any artist or staff member, or community member. Just kind of what I’ve observed and come to the questions/conclusions of. I got a little opinionated at the end but I tried not to single anyone out save for I think, one unnamed example? 

I’ll put everything under the cut here, because I know I have a tendency to get wordy (and spoiler: It did. This is a super long post, I’m sorry). So, here we go...

TL;DR: I like the gene, I’ll wait for the revamp before giving a concrete opinion, there were definitely some issues, I appreciate that staff took note/action, more communication like this or the dev streams is good (though communication between staff/community is a Thing unto itself of which I probably have a Disliked Take on and that was the really long part that isn’t necessary to read)

Okay before anything: the familiars. They’re super pretty! I like the recolors, and now I’m gonna have to grind the Kelp Beds for those boss fams. Dang. I love the kitty golem recolor.

With that out of the way, here we are - the subject of today’s discussions... Glowtail.

So, my first opinion: It’s not a bad gene! I can see some curious use for it, certainly. But there are some problems with it (and yes; I am aware staff has addressed this and pulled it to fix those problems! That’ll be more relevant later on here c: )

Note One: I think I do understand why it is a gem gene. Yes, design/thematically it does appear to fit the bill of a Baldwin Gene more. But I’d like to posit it’s the completion of a gem-gene set - Wasp/Bee/Glowtail. So in that regard, it makes sense!

Note Two: My personal opinion with the gene is that I like it, but it feels... hm. Plain isn’t correct. Like it’s missing something, I guess? I wish the segmenting was a little more prominent, and that the glow or gradient had a little more glitz/glamor, maybe some glitteries around the hips, to really sell it as a gem gene. I do like the glow we have on the other bits of dragon like light reflection, though, because it adds a little bit of dimension! All in all however even so, I do like it, and I won’t cement my opinion until we see what their updated version looks like in the future.

Note Three (The Problems): The art errors. What... what happened here?

As we’ve noticed, male snappers and male tundras are the two big offenders, with large chunks of color erroneously sitting outside the lineart quite noticeably. There is also part of the ‘glow’ (the aforementioned light reflection) that doesn’t make sense - being on parts of the dragon where it shouldn’t be, like on the front of wings where the tail is not in front of said limb, but behind.

But like... how did this not get caught before it got posted? Was it a time crunch, or it just... didn’t get quality checked before this happened? It’s really unfortunate. :c

Something I do with my art - and this is just my own process/thoughts - is when I’ve put down the base color, before I do any shading/highlights/big details, I pop a layer underneath the entire drawing and fill it with a high contrast color to the palette. That way any bits where I missed coloring in - or didn’t clean up outside the lines - becomes super noticeable, and I can fix it then instead of being a problem later. Maybe doing something like this before throwing the gene through the color automation process would’ve helped?

Last Note:

I feel like part of why these errors went unnoticed is because of how often, and sometimes how rushed, some of these updates have been - and this has been more noticeable in this year than otherwise. Is it because of community dissent with wanting more updates creating more crunch? Due to low-attention reticence creating a need for pushing more ad revenue / more “come to the site there’s new”?

I’m unsure, but it’s unfortunate nonetheless. I think staff, and FR as a whole, would benefit from like... hm. How to word this...

Maybe taking more time on updates / a more extended schedule so things aren’t as crunch (of course this being said, I don’t know what the workload is like so I can’t even say if crunch is applicable), and more open communication? Like how the dev streams were going - that was pretty well liked and everyone I know got pretty excited to see em and how the art was doing. It also opened up the avenue for more open communication / more nuanced opinions or thoughts.

But herein lies the huge issue, I think, with communication. This is the part where I’d like to reiterate, this is just my observations, and is not intended as an attack, a vaguepost, or deliberate callout at anybody. There’s no malicious intent here. This bit could also be construed as drama I suppose, and I apologize for that because again - not the intent. Just my take.

I’ve noticed posts going ‘no drama please’ or being tired when new updates come out of like, ‘oh boy here comes the negativity’ so I don’t think it’s just me who’s seen it, but have you guys noticed when anything new comes out, there’s an immediate rush of extreme salt and negativity?

And I don’t mean posts where its like “it’s not for me” or “I don’t like it but here’s [detailed/explained reason why]” - those are the nuanced opinions I mean. Those are fine. I mean the ones where people in forums, or on the more prolific drama blogs, are just.... mean/empty? Like “FUCK staff I hate how lazy they are with this it’s shitty looking” - that really vocal generally super salty in general minority of the community. Just hate without explanation, or just kind of aimless generalized attack/complaint.

I think that’s where communication with Staff fell off the bandwagon. The really loud, really vocal minority of folks who throw super salt or yell “This Sucks You Suck” completely overshadow the people who are well intentioned with sharing their opinions or problems/criticisms. The toxic bits and really vitriolic words are what gets seen and noticed. I think this is the majority of what gets heard, which is why communication got so closed off / shut down unless positive, in recent times. Do I agree with that? No, I don’t either - but I’m just looking at this from the outside. Idk how staff feels or thinks.

And this goes for both people who don’t like the content, and people that do.

Remember that the Keel thread got locked because someone who was white-knighting started getting real nasty with people in the thread, and going to extremes insulting artists who did mock-ups to help visualize their thoughts/opinions and was just being a real douche?

What I really wish was that we could have more open communication. Some of the things I really liked to see were like: Dev Streams, Community Updates/Q&A, Opinion Polls, That Update Progress on Breed/Gene Progress from a while back. All of that was excellent. And I like to see the community responding in well thought out ways! I like to see staff more hands on too! We’re only human and love this site and our dragons and want to see it at it’s best - but they’re also only human, and make mistakes, and we don’t know what’s goin on in there, just out here.

Trello is a really good way to kind of show that communication, and is transparent, but isn’t free-to-use for businesses, so... of course I also don’t know how Stormlight Workshop runs their business/hours so I’m just blowing hot smoke. But anyway, I think everyone would benefit from slowing down and opening up. If things are going slow, that’s okay - if Staff opens up to the community and says “This is taking longer than expected, but here’s upcoming releases / current in-progresses” I think we’d be like oh okay things are happening and it’ll be nice! As compared to everyone gets super antsy, nothing’s happening, no-one is talking... and then we get hit with a bunch of updates, some of which, like today’s, have... issues.

Of course then I worry that with more open talking or “we’re experiencing delays” the more vitriolic will get even angrier/saltier which doesn’t... help... but I mean... yeah. 

ANYWAY so I’ve written a full dissertation essay here without really intending to (see? I warned y’all! I ramble/don’t shut up ahahaha) so I’m gonna just stop myself here before I start going in circles. This last chunk I don’t really know what the meat of what I was trying to say was, now, I think. Hmmm, being deep in forests feels sacred to me so there are certain waterfall hikes in the smokey mountains and along the blue ridge parkway and in Hawaii that seem very special to me.  And then disney world and disneyland will always have a sacredness to them for me because they’ve meant so much to me and the happiness it brings people is pretty magical.

Mythology because it gets wild so fast and cracks me up sometimes.

Cupcakes.

87. your greatest fear?

Being annoying or mean without realizing it and driving people away.  I’m constantly scared I’m going to mess everything up which I need to work on because it’s hard to live that way.

88. your greatest wish?

Going to get a bit cheesy but to someday be a zoologist with some fun hobbies, travel often, feel satisfied with my life, and spend my days with someone I truly love and have a lot of fun with.

89. who would you put before everyone else?

Anyone in my family because we’re really close and they would do that for me.

90. luckiest mistake?

Probably going to an up-ity art school for a month a few years ago because while I was extremely depressed, homesick, and felt like a big failure the whole time, if I hadn’t done that and had my dreams crushed by some mean professors I might have gone there for a whole semester and spent a bajillion dollars to learn the same thing.  And it inevitably put me at the school I’m at now which I’m very very happy with and suits me so much better.

I like boxes.

Fairy lights because I’m a sucker for colors.

Doodlebug is the biggest one.

Fall.  Colors, halloween, thanksgiving, cooler weather, I love it ALL.

A painting of a whale shark from the Georgia aquarium because going there was a big deal for me and it’s very pretty.

Maybe 3?  I don’t have to memorize them much anymore lol.

98. favorite historical era?

I kind of like the 1920s aesthetic these days but I love very scattered things about history so picking one era is tough.

at the same time it’s a little frustrating that once again all of the emphasis is on the omega rangers (remember the stone canyon trio?  they’re a part of this too, strange i know) but i’m glad to see the stakes rising for them instead of the continuous “omega rangers are super awesome everything goes great for them yay” so i’m a lot more interested in what’s gonna happen with this

When he had met Phil for the first time, it hadn’t been exactly been a good day. Being nearly ten minutes late to his first day and having coffee spilled down his front after bumping into someone as he had left the local coffee shop had turned him into a storm cloud on an (ironically) sunny day.

There was Phil, of course, as endearing as always, jaw nearly dropping to the floor as he saw Dan’s disheveled and gloomy appearance.

“Oh! Goodness me, you look like you’ve had it. You must be Mr. Howell, I presume?” He had said, looking up from his chair behind the rather high front desk as Dan slammed his coffee down on top of it, desperately trying to soak up some of the coffee on his (now ruined) Gucci button-down.

“Yes. Was it clear from my appearance or something?” Dan had replied sharply, tossing the now wet tissue into a nearby trash can.

“No! Of course not! I just...noticed that you were the only person who hadn't checked in today yet.” Phil squeaked, eyes wide.

Looking up, Dan softened slightly at his shell shocked expression.

“Sorry….?”

“Phil.”

“Phil. I’ve just had a terrible morning. I hope you won’t hold this against me.” Dan had replied, picking his briefcase up and throwing Phil an apologetic smile as he turned to go down the hall.

After his first meeting of the day, much to his surprise, he had found a post-it note with a corgi on it stuck to his desk with a note scribbled on it.

Dan -

Hope that this can help to make up for your morning - my Mum always told me that a good cuppa can fix any situation, and I hope it helps to brighten yours.

Phil :)

Left, on his desk, was a cup of tea in a Shiba Inu mug.

Smiling slightly at the gesture, Dan picked up the mug and took a sip.

Well, Phil wasn’t wrong.

From that moment on, they had changed (quite rapidly) from strangers to friends.

Phil, Dan found, was just the person you would expect he would be from his choice of Corgi post-it notes. He was loyal, enthusiastic, and thoughtful.

So thoughtful, it often struck Dan hard. Never had he had someone so attentive to hear what he had to say. Conversations with Phil often lasted over five hours long, and whenever he had to leave him, he couldn’t help but feel like he had left a part of himself behind.

Well, he thought their relationship had been going in a particular way. However, at the company’s Christmas party, he found that the reality was quite different.

Phil had a boyfriend.

A very tall, fit boyfriend.

The entire party, Dan had been forced to watch as he made Phil giggle, held his hand, and keep him steady when he had clearly consumed a few too many drinks.

(Dan himself may have had one too many fancy cocktails, but that was beside the point.)

Heading out of the venue at the end of the night, Dan had grabbed Phil’s arm, effectively pulling him off to the side.

And, very tipsy and emotional, had said one of the stupidest things he possibly could have:

“So I’m not good enough for you?”

“What?” Phil had responded, flushed and looking unfairly gorgeous (as Dan would later remember) under the streetlamps.

“To date. Thought we were going somewhere. I always paid fr’ your coffees!” Dan slurred, leaning against the streetlamp as the world went blurry in his vision for a moment.

“Dan...I’m sorry, but I think you misinterpreted things. I -” Phil began, reaching out to touch his arm before someone called for him, causing him to quickly draw his arm back and look over his shoulder.

“Look, I have to go. Take this next cab, okay?” He had finished, putting a bill in Dan’s hand before shooting him an apologetic look as he turned away.

Over the course of the next few weeks, Dan had made the effort of avoiding Phil at every cost. No longer did he go in the front doors to be able to talk to Phil every morning, or make the effort to go down to see him at lunchtime.

Phil, clearly not getting his message, had resorted to leaving post-it notes on his desk every day in an attempt to reconnect.

Dan -

Came by again today to see you and was told that you were busy - I hope you’re not avoiding me.

Phil

Dan -

Definitely convinced you’re avoiding me now. Please call me, okay? I miss you.

(Plus, I haven’t watched Riverdale since we stopped talking - I’m deprived of Archie’s abs, you can’t do this to me.)

Phil

Every note Phil left had ended up in a small folder that Dan kept in his desk, as he had found himself unable to throw them away.

Later that month, and three weeks since they had stopped talking, Dan was surprised to hear a knock on his front door at nine o’clock on a Wednesday evening.

Throwing on a hoodie to make himself look slightly more acceptable, he answered it, freezing when he saw Phil on the other side.

(He looked unfairly adorable, of course. Red-cheeked and ruffled from the cold.)

“Look, I wouldn’t be coming here if I had somewhere else to go but...I do need some help.”

“You know I’d always help you with anything.” Dan replied quietly, not meeting his eye as he watched Phil deflate at this.

“Really? Even after you’ve cut me out all this time? I know you’ve seen the notes Dan. I’m sorry that...you thought what we had was more, but - we were friends!” Phil replied, biting his lip as he shifted awkwardly on the doorstep.

“You never told me about him. Why?”

“I don’t know I just...it was complicated. So complicated that...I had to leave tonight. Couldn’t stay there.”

Dan snorted at this, looking up at him for the first time. “Looked like a dickhead, frankly. Didn’t seem good enough for you.”

“How would you know that?” Phil asked, expression softening slightly.

“Because. You didn’t care enough to mention him. You had no photos of the two of you at work. Never did you act as if there was someone caring for you. That’s why I -”

“Wanted to care for me?” Phil finished, looking at him tenderly.

“Yes. Because you’re...a good person. Better than I deserve, and...you’ve made my transition here less lonely. I’m sorry for being an idiot and misreading you.” Dan sighed, running a hand through his hair exasperatedly.

“Well, looks like we’re both idiots, then. Couldn’t stop thinking about you.” Phil chuckled, a small smile crossing his face.

Looking up, Dan met his eyes. “You have nowhere to go?”

“No. All alone.”

“Would you...want to come in?” Dan asked, stepping back inside further to let him in.

Smiling, Phil nodded. “There’s nothing I’d like more.”

Later on, after Phil had moved in and their relationship was defined, many people asked them where they had met.

Looking at each other and laughing, they always answered the same way.

“Frankly, we were two oblivious idiots.”

Synopsis: On the morning his 18th birthday he sees a name written along the upper side of his torso along with a paint brush full of color. But after just finding his soulmate, Jungkook is faced with having to fight against all odds to save himself and his soulmate as others try to break their link to each other.

Pt.1

(A/N: So Taehyung’s soulmate!au is next, i’ll try to have that up by next Saturday, I’m sorry I took so long to post this one. Also, sorry for any spelling and/or grammatical errors.)

Jungkook’s POV:

I woke up early today and smiled to myself remembering last nights events. I jumped out of bed all giddy and excited for today as well. Quickly I turn on the tv and pour myself a bowl of cereal and sit down to eat it. “Again today more bodies have been found, one good thing is that these bodies are as old as the ones found previously, but still, more people have gone missing. Both young adults and teenagers. Police assure the public they are close to catching who is behind this whole ordeal.” The news lady says and I sigh, my smile slowly fading. I wonder who could be behind it for a couple second but turn the tv off and reach for my phone inside my pocket. Yesterday night before leaving the restaurant I exchanged phone numbers with Y/n, my soulmate. We’d agreed on calling each other in the morning to do something together as it was Saturday today, so I did just that and dialed her number. “Jungkook, what’s up?” I heard her say through the phone as I set the bowl down in the sink. “Hey, I was just wonder where we should meet later.” I casually asked her but in reality my heart beat was beating pretty fast. The thumping of my heart was so loud, she could probably hear it through the phone. “Well, I was thinking we could meet up in front of the restaurant from yesterday, since its in the middle of the city. We can just walk around, talk, find something to do.” She tossed the idea and I smiled. “Okay, how does 2:30 sound for you?” I asked and she agreed happily and I ran to my room in excitement to get ready for my first date with my soulmate. “This is going to be great.” I smiled to myself like an idiot and looked through my closet for an outfit to wear. I decided on a grey sweater and a greenish gray coat paired with ripped jeans folded at the bottom with a pair of dr martens. I wanted to look put together but not to formal but still look good for her. I quickly set everything down and rushed to take a quick shower. Not being able to contain my happiness and singing passionately in the shower. After I was done changing into my outfit, I grabbed my wallet and phone. “Mom, dad! I’m going out! I’ll be back later!” I yell to inform my parents of my outgoing and walk out the door, closing it behind myself.

It’s only eleven now and my date isn’t until two, so I decide to look around town for something to get her. I walk to the bus stop but end up waiting a couple seconds before the bus arrives. I get on and wait. On the ride to the center of the city, I see a couple. It looked like the boy was giving his girlfriend flowers and a gift box, “Would she like flowers?” I wondered out loud to myself. The bus came to a stop and I got out. I walked down the street, looking for a gift to get her. Luckily after walking around for a while I found a store that had many random stuff. In the middle of everything was a book filled with art pieces from many different artists. The book wasn’t just filled with images but some pages even had pop ups and short passages on the artist. I paid for the book and walked out. I didn’t have to walk far for the flowers. Such pretty colors and fresh scents attacked me when I walked in to the shop, it was becoming hard to pick the right ones for her but I suddenly came across the perfect ones. It was a bouquet of white and purple coreopsis. The white ones were in the middle and the purple ones were surrounding them. The middle of the white ones were a very pretty gold like yellow. The bouquet as a whole reminded me of her. Her gold eyes and her black hair with purple undertones framing her face. “She would love these.” I said as I took in the scent of the flowers. I paid for them and walked towards the restaurant to wait for her. But as I started walking towards the restaurant I could feel myself getting more and more nervous.

Y/N POV:

I nervously waited for the clock to strike 1:30 so I could leave. I was nervous about seeing him again, afraid he may not like me. But then again, he was my soulmate, which meant he’d like me for me, right? I took a deep breath in and got out as soon as my phone marked the time. I walked so the bus stop two blocks away from my house. Didn’t take to long for it to arrive. I got in and sat down. My phone buzzed a couple times in my purse and I checked it. 

Ava: Have you left yet?

Are you nervous? Don’t worry, He’s going to love you!

Just breathe in and out okay?

I laughed at her messages, she knew me so well. I replied quickly, letting her know I had already left and that i’d tell her how it went later. I was so entertained with my phone that I had almost missed my stop. I got off the bus and started walking towards our agreed meeting point. My heart started thumping out really fast as I got closer. He was already there waiting for me. I smiled and waved at him. “Hey, I uh, I got you something.” He smiled at me as he gave me a bouquet of flowers. I didn’t know if the electrifying sensation going through my body was just me or our soulmate bond. It felt just like it did last night. Something i’d never felt before. “These are lovely! These would make such a pretty painting, I have to paint them when i get home!” I said admiring the arrangement of flowers as he smiled, pleased that I liked them. He then pulled out a book from his coat and handed it to me. “I also got you this.” He said as I accepted it. It was a book filled with different artists I admired and had been looking for. “I can’t believe you got me this, I’ve been trying to get my hands on this for so long, how did you know?” I asked him flipping through the book. “Lucky guess.” He smiled.

“Well, I actually got something too.” I told him, putting the book away in my bag and pulling out his gift. “Happy birthday.” I smiled as he opened his gift. It was a small painting I had worked on all last night. It was basically a painting of last night, our first meeting. “I know it’s probably something you like or as good as the gift you got me but I hope you still like it.” I told him as he smiled to himself while looking at the painting. “No I love it, it’s beautiful. Thank you.” He said putting it back. “Alright, shall we go?” I asked him and he nodded as we started to walk. We weren’t really going anywhere specific. “So how old are you?” He asked me. “I’m twenty. You know you really gave me a scare when I turned eighteen.” I told him as we walked down an ally full of shops and people. “Why is that?’ He asked. “Well you know that whole thing about how mark appears when we’re eighteen just to help us find our soulmate if we haven’t already and to reassure us that they’re the right one?” I asked him as we saw an arcade up ahead and we both agreed that we should go in there. “An arcade date sounds great!” I smiled in excitement. “This going to be fun, but yes I know what you’re talking about.” He said, inviting me to continue as we waited in line to get into the arcade “Well none told me that both soulmates had to be eighteen to see the mark appear, so I thought I just didn’t have one. I cried the whole night after everyone had left.” I told him, a little embarrassed of myself. I looked at him for a moment and looked away as my cheeks started to burn. “I’m here now, and I can promise i’ll always be here.” He said softly, assuring as he slid his hand into mine. I swear if my cheeks weren’t burning before they were definitely boiling now. “ I used the back of my free hand to cool down my cheeks as I was sure they were red. We finally paid and received a card to use all over the arcade and ran inside. We played all of the games inside almost twice. “Hey, lets try this one! It’s a horror themed 3D game!” I told him as we were looking around fr the third time to make sure we didn’t miss a game, obviously we’d missed this one. “Wow, that actually sounds really cool. Let’s play it.” Jungkook agreed as we sat down inside the both. It was for two player only and had curtains on each side to make the both dark for the screens. “Here, put these on.” He said as he handed me a pair of 3D glasses as he started the game and I picked up my gun once I had them on. The game started with a jump scare but neither of us seemed to flinch and just waited excitedly for the game to start. Everything was honestly going great, we were getting all the kills and high scores, having fun. Until it was about to end and the game caught me off guard and the jump scare got to me. I literally jumped, dropping my gun on the floor and hiding behind Jungkook. “Are you scared? It’s just a game.” He reassured me as I nervously smiled at him, being face to face with him. “I’m not usually one to be scared, maybe my guard is just down around you.” He smiled at my words.

“You know, I’m not usually someone who likes cheesy things like that, but why do they sound so lovely coming from you?” His face was much closer now as he asked that question. I kept my eyes on him, and while our stare was intense, it didn’t feel uncomfortable at all. As he got closer and I closed my eyes waiting for his kiss, but we both jumped at the words of stranger. “Hey, are you to done playing?” The voice asked. We both cleared our throats and answered a quick yes before getting out. “I, uh, saw an ice cream shop outside of here, should we go?” Jungkook offered and I quickly nodded. “Yeah, let’s get out of here.” I agreed with him. We ran out and walked to the ice cream giggling about our time at the arcade. The sun was starting in and we decided it was time to go home. “Let’s go through here. There’s a little pastry shop that way, I was thinking we should stop buy and get something.” I told him and he agreed “Sounds got to me.” He said as we walked down. We were laughing and talking and everything seemed fine until we saw a black van pull up in front of us. The windows were also tinted black so we couldn’t see who was inside. “That van looks oddly suspicious, don’t you think?” He asked me and I totally agreed. “Honestly, yes it does but maybe it’s nothing. Let’s just wait for it to leave.” I told him, but after awhile we realized it wasn’t going anywhere so we decided to just turn back. But as we do we come face to face with these really big men and we look at each other but next thing I know we have dark cloth bags being thrown over our heads from people behind is I assume. I start kicking and yelling for help and I can hear Jungkook doing the same, but they quickly cover our mouths. I start to panic as we get carried off. After we get thrown into the van we saw earlier, I assume, we yell at the men to let us go, but in reply with both get hit and I could hear Jungkook groan in pain. I immediately stopped and felt the men wrap something around my mouth on top of the bag. After they let go of me, instead of protesting some more, I got closer to Jungkook after hearing him groan in pain again when they let him go, and I could feel him getting closer too. Not to long after that I could feel the van move as it took us away to an unknown place to us.

The whole time, I could feel my body tremble, as I dreaded where we were being taken to. But as soon as we left, was as soon as we arrived. I suddenly felt arms around me again and suddenly I was standing and being pushed forward to walk. I panicked at first. not knowing if Jungkook was being brought too. I was afraid of being separated but I calmed down once I heard foot steps behind myself and the men pushing me. I heared some electric doors open and then close behind us, and then being brought to an abrupt stop suddenly and after a couple seconds I felt the bag covering my head being removed. I was met by an unknown woman. She was wearing a deep red suit and matching red lipstick. Her hair was perfectly put up into a neat updo. She was holding one dark red and velvet bag in her left hand. I assumed it was the one that was previously on me, and the matching one she held in her right hand must have been Jungkook’s. I turned to him, he had a bruise on his cheek which must have been from the hits we received earlier. My eyes got watery as I wondered what would happen to us.

Narrator’s POV:

The lady whom was unfamiliar to the both of you examined you both for a moment before looking over to her men. “Place them in a room upstairs. Report to me once you are done.” She tells them before they take you away. You notice that the doors they came through have some sort of grey metallic box on the side with a small red light blinking from it’s corner. You took in the information, but before you could look around to see if there was another exit, you were being pushed upstairs. You both noticed that the hallway was full of rooms.

Although Jungkook’s eyesight was a bit hazy, he managed to see that inside one of the first doors was what seemed like a table full of weapons, and white cabinets filled with small glass bottles lining up the walls. As they kept walking down the long white hall, he also noticed something else. In the room on each side were people. Each room contained two people, just like them. He saw one room with two boys holding each other, another with two girls looking at each other as one cried and the other tried to comfort, one room held a boy who seemed like a foreigner to Jungkook, and a girl about his age. He saw more people in rooms like that before they reached their own room. He wondered what was going on in this place. But he gets pulled away from his train of thought by the feeling of being pushed and falling to the floor, you fall next to him and he asks if you are okay as the men close the door and leave.

“I’m fine. But Jungkook, as we were being brought here I saw a couple things. The door we came in through is opened and closed by a key card, and I’m pretty sure all the guards have one. But I thought that was all i’d see before getting all the way up the stair but I realized something.” You told him as you looked over to the door.

“Which was?” He asks intrigued by what you have to say. “That the lady we saw earlier over to a place directly in front of the stairs. I turned around just in time to see someone in a white doctor like coat open the door to a room. I only got a small glimpse of the inside, but there was this really weird machine in the room, like a big circle and on either side of it there was a metal table with someone laying on it. Like they were strapped to it.” You finished, with your thoughts all over the place, wondering what in the world that meant. “Well, I saw somethings on our way up here two. One of the first doors in the hallway is filled with white cabinets that looked like they held small glass bottles, and a table with weapons on it. Not only that, but each room is filled with two people in each.” He tells you, as he quickly recalls the news from the past two days. “Why two? what does that mean?” You ask him, not really sure what it could mean, but hoping he somehow knew. “That’s right, that has to be it.” He says after recalling it and organizing his thoughts. “It has to be what?” You question him again in confusion. “The people in those rooms are soulmates, like us. They weren’t just kidnapped randomly. The past two days on the news, It’s been reported that the bodies of dead people were found who seemed to be that way because they were forcefully separated from their soulmate. The lady we saw earlier must be the one behind all this.” He explained to you and you seemed to understand everything after that. “The machine I saw In that room must be how they do it, they forcefully cut the connection between soulmates, causing them to die.” Your last words were whispered in pain as the thought of being separated from your soulmate made your heart clench. “We need to think of a way out of here” You tell him pulling yourself together. Jungkook agrees with you, reaching for your shoulder, while looking at the door. He had realized that they hadn’t taken your bag. He quickly opens it and checks to see if you’ve got anything inside that could help. He pulls out your pocket knife and opens it. “A double bladed knife.” He says  to himself, thinking of a plan. “Of course, I know what to do with this.” You take it from him and quickly stand up, resulting in Jungkook questioning you.

“What are you doing?” But by the time he asks, you already have your coat off and the knife wrapped up inside under your foot. You grabs each side and kick the middle with the heel of your foot three times. Quickly kneeling down and unwrapping the knife. “Perfect.” You say but Jungkook is still confused as to what it’s for. “Take one and place it in your pocket. I think if we place it in our coat pockets it’ll be easier to get.”  You instruct, handing him one and keeping one for herself. “Oh! I see, when the people in that room were strapped down they must have been strapped buy something made of leather right? You want us to cut them with this?” He asks and you quickly agree.

“They were smart enough to take our phones out of our coat pockets but not smart enough to check us for weapons or take my bag, and oh am I grateful for that.” You state to him, placing the knife in her coat pocket carefully. “Alright, after we get realized we won’t be able to just leave, they have so many security, they’ll definitely come after us. We’ll have to come up here and somehow open that door to the room full of weapons I saw.” You agree with him on that, it won’t be easy to just leave. “We need to steal a key card to open the front door as well.” You tell Jungkook. “Do you think we can free the others? We have to try.” As you ask him this he looks out of the window again as if wondering if it’s possible. “We can definitely try but I can’t know for sure.”

“We just have to hope for the best.”You tell him, but it’s more like to comfort yourself. One tear dropping from your eye as Jungkook pulls you into a hug, as the both of you await your turn. You two ended up almost falling asleep like that, drifting away into peacefulness, as much as you could in a place and situation like this at least. Just as you thought you could actually fall asleep though, you felt yourself being torn away from Jungkook’s grip. You started kicking and fighting against the men who held you, as you weren’t ready and frankly you were scared and not sure if you could pull it off. There wasn’t much you could do though, you just turned to look at Jungkook who gave you a pained smile. Your heart heavy and aching now, as you were being dragged down the stairs. Finally being brought into the room you dreaded, which was full of people wearing white coats, the type scientists wear. You were placed on one of the metal beds and being strapped in at the wrists. You both had pretended to be resistant the whole time but really they were just getting the knifes out of their coat pockets, but no one had noticed thankfully. Once the men walked away and closed the doors behind themselves, you looked over to Jungkook who mouthed the word now at you, and just as he did you both felt a tug at your heart and an extremely unbearable pain, causing you both to scream loudly in pain. You guessed they must have started the process and in the panic, you both hurriedly started cutting at your cuffs. As each second passed the pain got worse, nearly crippling as they were basically removing part of you. The both of you were full on crying now as you screamed in pain and agony you had no idea you could feel. You finally managed to free one just in time as one of scientists was noticed and came towards you. You quickly swung your arm at her, slicing into her cheek with the blade in your hand. As she fell to the ground you quickly pulled you hand up as much as you could and quickly cut through the cuff in that hand. “Don’t or I’ll kill him!” You screamed at the rest as you grabbed one of the male scientists and held him from the back with your blade against his neck, he pull off his key card and place it in you pocket. Jungkook finally gets up but notices the stardust like line connecting the two of you is still stuck in the machine even though the both of you have gotten up. He goes near the guy behind the control panel. Thinking quickly he pulls off his belt and swings the metal part at the guy hitting him in the face and quickly wrapping his belt around the guys neck, pulling it tightly. “Don’t even think about touching him!” You scream again as you notice the lady who’s behind this motion for someone to get Jungkook. You stab the guy you’re holding and run to the lady and punch her stealing her key card just in time as Jungkook pushes the cancellation button on the control panel. You finally feel the pain lessen but still feel utterly weak. Non the less you push through.

You open the door as you see a bunch of guards running your way in the distance and the sirens going off in the building. You start running upstairs with Jungkook behind you. Once upstairs you use the key card from the man to open the room. “Jungkook check if they’re loaded in not load them up.” You instruct him as you go over to the cabinet and open it. ���Jungkook, these are sedatives.” You inform him as you fill up two needles with the sedatives. “What do you plan to do with those?” He asks as you place one in his pocket and one in yours. “If we run out of bullets, we can use these.” He nods his head in approval and hands you a come guns. “Why so many?” You quickly ask. “Give one to the people in those rooms. We are freeing the rest right? Come on, we don’t have much time.” He tell you and you run out and start opening rooms with the key card. Jungkook behind you passing out the guns. You start passing out guns too and at one door you give the key card to a girl and tell her to go open the rest of the doors while you take care of the guards and hand her a guns. “Jungkook, lets go!” You scream, pulling him by his arm towards the stairs and shooting some guards on the way down. You thought there was less of them now, that was until you reached the bottom of the stairs and saw just how many more there actually were. Both you and Jungkook were getting shot at as you ran towards the exits. You both shot back seeing some guards fall to the floor in pain. One bullet managed to pass by your arm, leaving a slice in you arm, and a similar wound was left on Jungkook’s cheek. You finally made it to the exit, out of bullets and energy, but to your surprise the lady was there. “How dare you ruin my lab, and release my experiments!” She yells at the both of you. “Those are people not experiments!” Jungkook back at her as he punches her. “You sick fuck.” You tell her as Jungkook takes the sedative out of his pocket and tries to inject her. Taking Jungkook by surprise, she grabs it. throwing it at the wall and braking it. “Jungkook.” You call at him and through yours at him and he catches it, punching her again and she falls to the ground. Giving Jungkook the opportunity to inject her with the sedative. As he is doing this you run to open the door with her key card which you had taken earlier. “Come on, run!” You yell at him as he runs behind you. You can hear the lady calling behind you to come back, her voice sounded drowsy before she fell to the ground unconscious. Jungkook and yourself didn’t stop running for a long time, not until you saw an emergency phone on the road and dialed the police reporting what had happened.

“We can finally breathe.” You tell him as you hang up the phone, he looks you in the eyes. A look that says, ‘I nearly lost you and I don’t think I could survive that,’ before he comes closer to you and kissing you. The kiss was like him asking you to never leave him and stay in his arms forever. Something you both had planned on since the day you met. You couldn’t deny the amount of love you both felt in that kiss as you heard sirens of cop cars passing you. He looked at you, his forehead pressed against yours. Where there is a will, there is a way, huh." You state, referring to the symbol that appeared on your arm on his birthday. "And you really are creative." He pulls you in for a hug, both happy to be alive.

#20: The Track (4x15)

So um, no joke, I’m a mess rn. 😭😥😭 Like I was not at all ready to see those pictures for 8b pop up and it really messed me up. How does a TV show hurt this much!? 😭

This wasn’t how I was planning on starting this post but man those pictures just really took me out. 😥  Like seeing Michonne clearly determined to be by his side til the last second. (And I didn’t even catch that they were holding hands at first, and seeing that just broke me even more. 😭) Seeing Rick clearly in shock that the very engine of his entire life, before and after the apocalypse, is basically coming to an abrupt halt. Seeing both of them be there for their son one last time as the place they called home burns. It’s seriously too much. 😔

And as was very rightfully mentioned in a comment, we never even saw a substantial post-canon scene with the four members of Grimes Family 2.0 just in their house in ASZ, except in Rick’s dream world and now that’s just never going to happen. 😢 

It’s interesting timing that those pictures would come out on the day I was going to reflect on my all time favorite Grimes Family 2.0 scene. Like this is literally what I had originally written as the opener for this post:

“Alright so this 20th moment is definitely a big one! This lovely scene with Grimes Family 2.0 on the train tracks is so perfect and it’s my top favorite moment with the three of them. 😍”

And then those pictures came out and it literally felt like a punch in the gut. 😣

But rather than see this post as painful timing I’m going to try and look at it as perfect timing.

Cuz I think this is the time when remembering how happy, and familial, and just all around great these three were together is needed most. 😭😭

Those three characters are clearly about to go through something extremely painful very soon and it’s hard cuz they have been through so much together and survived it. But that’s why this moment in season 4 is so special cuz it reminds you that while yes they’ve been through a lot of traumatizing and tough things together, they’ve also had some really sweet and happy moments too.

So I feel like because it’s still true, and perhaps even more true now, I’ll still go into this break down by saying...Alright so this 20th moment is definitely a big one! This lovely scene with Grimes Family 2.0 on the train tracks is so perfect and it’s my top favorite moment with the three of them. 😍

It’s also a moment that I consider to be a major turning point in the making of Richonne.

See from my observations, I consider this moment to be the moment when Rick realizes he might love Michonne in a different and deeper type of way. 🙌🏾🙌🏾

To me, 4b was when Rick and Michonne realized they had serious love in their hearts for one another. Like there was a spark from their very first meeting at that prison fence and the love was always brewing but I feel it’s in this latter half of season four that they both become more aware that this person could be the love of their life.

And while the love between them grows all throughout 4b, I think it’s in this scene specifically where Rick becomes more self aware about his feelings. So we don’t just have to break this one down. We have to break it all the way down. 😋

So the scene starts where we just see Rick talking and then he turns around to see these two cuties preoccupied with playing a game of balancing on those train tracks.  😊

The shot of Rick turning around to see his family just enjoying themselves is beyond precious. #Art 😭

I love that we get to see how Carl and Michonne’s friendship is so fun and lighthearted even in this world. She’s so good at connecting with Carl and even though we know she’s grown and mature I love that she has such a child like heart with him. ☺️

Rick’s delivery of the line, “What are you doing?” is so great. 😋 Cuz he’s amused and also sort of like “so this was more important than listening to me talk about our resources?” lol.

And I love their playfulness when Carl says he’s winning a bet and Michonne says “In your dreams.” Like all they need is some train tracks to actually have some fun and a moment of levity in all this darkness.

But what makes my heart melt is Rick’s smile when he sees this. Like you can tell he is so appreciative of this lighthearted moment and the happiness Michonne is able to give to his son.

He did after all say Carl needs her and he’s seeing firsthand how true that is and how Michonne really can give Carl a friendship that he can’t quite give him. And I love that you see how much this moment means something to Rick. 😊

It’s also nice cuz it serves as a reminder to Rick that life doesn’t have to be strictly business all the time.

But it does have to be some business lol so as Rick walks to them (which I appreciate cuz it means he’s willing to let them take at least some time for fun) he gently suggests that they might have to speed up the process.

And Michonne validates that by saying “Yeah you’re right. We shouldn’t be fooling around” cuz Homegirl’s mature too 👏🏽 But she’s also fun cuz she turns that into an attempt to get Carl to lose but instead she ends up falling off the tracks. And again I love that we’re seeing them just have fun and be silly. 🙌🏾

And Rick just keeps watching and smiling cuz he knows he and Carl are so lucky to have her. Like they’re seriously a family now. 😭

And since Carl won fair and square he’s adorably like...

Lol, but fr it’s so cute that their little bet was over a candy bar. And it’s also cute how much Carl enjoys the little games she’ll come up with. Cuz in reminding her that she said “winners choice.” it lets you know this bet was at least partly Michonne’s idea.

It’s also so stinking adorable that when she takes out the two candy bars she’s so clearly trying to hint that he should take the one that’s not the Big Cat lol. 😂

Michonne and cat related things is like Richonne and cars, it always makes for a great moment. 👌🏽

But Carl goes for it anyway and Michonne playfully says “Oh come on” before sweetly acknowledge that he “Won it fair and square”.

And y’all I love that Rick is literally just taking it all in and smiling. Like I don’t know that he ever thought he’d see his son get to be this lighthearted again and yet here they are in this super normal and happy moment.

Also I appreciate that while he could have rushed them with their little candy exchange, he instead lets them have this whole little moment as he happily third wheels lol. 😋

And then he watches his good little son kindly agree to split the candy bar cuz they always share. It’s precious cuz in saying “always” that means they do this type of stuff often. 😊

And I love that she actually takes it and cutely says “fork it over” cuz she’s like it’s true tho we do always share. 😂 

Their dynamic is perfection here and, as casual as this moment is, you can still tell that Carl and Michonne mean the world to each other. 

So this scene has always been so special for the Grimes Family 2.0 aspect of it. Even when I first watched this, I loved the friendship Michonne and Carl had.

But now in retrospect, this scene has become crucial to Richonne cuz, as I mentioned earlier, this is where I think we get to visually see the moment Rick realizes he loves Michonne a little differently than he thought.

Cuz y’all, a lot of people think this look right here, seconds before Richonne went canon, was the first time that Rick looked at Michonne like this...

But uh...they thought. 😊

Cuz in this season 4 scene Rick is watching this little candy exchange between Michonne and Carl and then he looks at Michonne like this...

Looks familiar to me. 😋

And y’all that’s just the first time he looks at her like this in this one single scene! Cuz then the scene ends with him looking at her like this...

Re-watching these episodes I really wanted to see if I could track down the moment when Rick and Michonne first knew they might be falling in love. Like I wanted to see if I’d see when Rick and Michonne first seem to know their love for each other went from friend-love to really falling in love. 

And y’all, to me, that lingering look is the moment for Rick. So when I saw this I was like...

(And to me, Michonne’s moment of becoming more self aware is in the next episode,which I’ll def be talking about soon 😋)

I love the little look Rick gives Michonne cuz I’m telling you Homeboy’s slowly but surely becoming self-aware about just how special Michonne is to him personally. Like that look just felt like an “I think I might love you for real” look.

Not just “oh I like her”, or “I love her relationship with Carl”, I think in this moment Rick is realizing I love her. 💯

And now, if this look just happened once you could probably overlook it, but for him to do this twice, it lets you know he’s definitely become more self aware of his feelings for her. 

Like when he looked at Carl, that’s him thinking “aw this is a sweet moment”.

When he turns to Michonne tho...there’s def something different communicated in that look.

And again, for him to look at her like this twice it just confirms that this is different. 🙌 🏾😊

So basically, to make a long story short, this look right here is all the proof needed to let the world know these two have been in love for a long time lol...

They still had a journey to go on in terms of being 100% aware of their feelings but these are just the moments where I think the thought and the notion of being in love first crossed their mind in a much more direct way than before. 

And I love that the scene ends with Rick’s smile as he realizes this is actually a great family moment. Like they make him so happy and that makes me so happy.

Honestly they could have just spent the rest of their days in this little family unit. I would have still tuned in lol.

Also, it’s crazy that this is their only scene in this episode but it makes such a lasting impression and it’s the best scene of the episode in my humble opinion. 😋 

And I love that the episode is called “Us” cuz those three became an “us” in 4b and never looked back.

And y’all! This train track scene I think is even more confirmed to be the moment Rick realized he could have a deeper love for Michonne when three seasons later it’ll be the first thing he recalls about her during the season 7 premiere.😭

Rick recalling this moment during that intense season 7 premiere lets me know just how special this moment was to him and considering it’s, I believe, his earliest memory of her in those season 7 flashback memories, I’m pretty sure that could suggest that this is when he started to fall in love. 🙌🏾☺️

And how could he not, cuz this moment made it crystal clear that Michonne belonged in this family. 👌🏽😊

I love so much about this scene and I’m so glad we got this moment, even if from now on watching it will always make me teary eyed. 😭

And one of the things I love most about this scene is that it illustrates just how true Hershel’s words were. “Things break but they can still grow”. 

And in this moment Rick got to experience the whole new precious plant that’s taken root and grown right before his eyes. 👌🏽🙌 🏾😊

hey i’m finally gonna do this.  i’m gonna fully gush about my favorite piece of art of all time.  something that has permanently left a mark on me in the best way.  if you actually do read this like, like it because i want to know who’s reading me ramble for this long.  the whole post is under the cut so if you don’t want to, just scroll right past and don’t in.teract please!

okay so i’ve been sitting here slowly tearing up as everything in the last chapter of my life has been swirling around me in a cacophony so i’d thought i’d put my thoughts down in a positive way by associating things with my absolute favorite body of work any musician has ever put out, gush about it, and also kinda be a little bit more personal for once.

forgive me for never shutting up about this album but it’s Dearest Everybody by Inara George.

now like for a bit of context, i’d never been a fan of folk music or it’s peer genres for quite a while.  it’s always been too slow and structureless and overall just felt like a giant sappy waste of time.  i’d gotten into Inara’s work with her band The Bird and the Bee in between the months of january and like, march or april (which is very pop) so I wasn’t expecting her solo work to be folk-y, piano pop with a bit of country influences.  that being said, this album won my heart so quickly and has slowly just become the no contest de facto winner of the “what’s my favorite album of all time” challenge that i haven’t been very quiet about how much i like this album.

as long as we’re being honest i feel stupid for liking this enough to even make this post let alone talk about it to other people.  i don’t know.  i’m not a big fan of sharing my interests with others, as they’ve been used to ridicule me or been “ruined” for me in the past, so i tend to keep to myself.

this album is special to me tho.  in so many ways.

i’ll just do a full breakdown track by track?

1. Young Adult.  so this track is the intro, and it starts off with this welcoming chord and syncopated bass.  immediately the lyrics paint a picture of a young person knowing they want to follow their gut and do what they think they should, no matter what it is.  in the context of the lyrics, it’s following Inara’s father and becoming a musician, but i like to think of it as just being general and applicable to anyone?  the chorus and second verse talk about young adult’s cynicism, depression and sarcastic nature while also showing their curiosity and natural drive, whether right or wrong, on the “what do i know?  what do i know?  i know i want to see where this thing will go” line.  i love all of this because it’s highkey relatable!  i’m turning 20 this year and i’m not going to lie, a lot of this hits so close to home.  i love the almost stubborn nature of the aforementioned “i know i want to see where this thing will go” line, it has this “i’ll show you” type of demeanor about it and i think it just works into the idea of a young adult trying to show that they’re independent and know what’s right for them.  the whole song swells as it goes on and all the layers are so simple, yet add so much.

2. Crazy.  this song is a lot more personal to Inara, and while i have official confirmation of what the song is about, i won’t be sharing it, at least unprompted, out of respect for her.  the song has this very, uneven walk about it?  i love the opening lyrics about grass coming up to your knees, and everyone stopping visiting.  i’m highkey almost a hermit myself, and these lyrics are very me.  the whole song is about loving someone and putting all your energy into them, so much so that you go crazy.  i can’t exactly relate to this feeling as it is, but i love how the chorus soars.  the background ambiance on this track is also amazing, it adds so much to the immersion of like, walking around in the tall grass.  this whole album sounds and paints images as clear as photographs, you can get every single detail out of the soundscape, and it sends chills down my spine every time.  i love Inara’s little vocal chime bits?  especially when they echo off-beat and just add to the immersion.  the whole song has this atmosphere i can’t get enough of, it’s stunning.  i love the ending eerie, almost croaking cello.  so perfect.

3. Somewhere New.  this song starts off with these beautiful vocal melodies, and immediately the vibe has perked up.  i absolutely love all the little horn touches on this track.  the amount of care that went into the production on these tracks is insane.  when Inara gets into the “live it up” part, i love how the sound becomes almost waltz-like?  it becomes soaring, and airborne, and yet still has so much movement.  i love the clapping and the reintroduction of the vocal riff after the chorus too.  it makes the whole song have this liveliness about it, i can’t get enough.  the lyrics go into this innate, unwavering, unavoidable desire to go somewhere new.  i keep making this about me but i legitimately relate so much.  there have been a lot of times i’ve almost just walked out of my house, leaving everything behind to just, explore and find something new.  it feels like an inherent desire sometimes, that you can’t avoid.  the end of the track has these squeaking metallic noises and i love them for unexplainable reasons.

4. Take Me to Paris.  this song is so, so intimate and minimalist.  the simple 6th harmonies, the minor cadence before the next section.  i love Inara’s vocal runs before the final parts of the verses.  and the “run naked through the streets” part.  the whole song is so small, so spacey, and yet so warm and tender.  each part of this track just compliments the others so much and it climaxes in the most calm way with the “and make you love me even more than you do” parts.  the whole song just is this incredibly effective, simple composition and structure, and yet it works so well.  the chord progressions are so amazing here too.  i absolutely love the way it almost feels like the song pans up to the sky with each section ending.  you get this immense feeling of vastness but it’s so close and personal that it feels yours.  this track originally flew over my head but each time i relisten to it, it just reinforces how special it is.

5. A Bridge.  an entirely acapella track!  this track is, in my opinion, the least accessible.  the structure and lack of production can be a bit off-putting, but i still love it.  i feel like this is the moment where the “paris” mentioned previously falls away, where it’s just Inara and the person she’s speaking to in these tracks, the pure intimacy of it all shines through so well.  i really love the backing vocals texture in this track.  like honestly i didn’t even notice it was all acapella during my first time listening to it.  i was too busy listening to Inara and the vocals covered the bases they had to.  i love the vocalization in the “you open up to anything... will you tell me?”, it feels so fitting and i can’t put into words how it sounds to me.

6. Slow Dance.  the album picks up again!  this track was one of my first favorites from this, and for good reason!  i love the themes across this album of identity, change and looking back on yourself.  the sound of this song honestly makes me feel like you’re flying down a dirt road, or on a cargo train or something.  i love how the chorus suspends around the opening and then swirls around Inara’s vocals and create this immense motion around it all.  i haven’t been talking about the lyrics much, have i?  sorry omg i’m really bad at this.  i love the little chord changes at the end of the chorus too.  like honestly this whole album is so good compositionally, production-wise AND lyrically, it’s really hard for me to put my thoughts together about everything.  i really love the “the end is the beginning” lyrics, it feels like it’s a new start, and that’s because it is.  OH YEAH i love the “though they say youth is wasted on the young, we never could have lasted through those nights, through streets and stars, knowing what we know now” part.  it can be so shocking to look back on what you used to say and do and act and EXIST in, and believe you did and had no problem with it.  they say hindsight is 20/20, but i think this song is about acknowledging the fact you can’t change the past, and doing what you can while you still have the time to.

7. All for All.  this track is really hard for me to put into words.  i love it just the same as the rest, but my feelings on it are really hard to put together.  i always interpolate the lyrics of standing with the sun on my face, and your words in my mind into the next track, and the sound feels like a lighter, more bouncy version of slow dance.  it’s a really good transition between the two but in all honesty it can be hard to parse this one from either of them, but that’s more on me for how i remember the tracks, rather than for how they were designed.  Inara’s explanation of what this track meant was also very eye opening, i won’t reveal it again out of privacy respect but i definitely did not get the intended meaning from it, and it made a lot more of the lyrics that i thought were random mean something more.  i honestly realize as i’m typing this that this song is the old soul manifested in slow dance, looking back on its life.  the song is about death, and i realize that now all for all is perhaps acknowledging how it’s time won’t last forever, and that’s why it goes into the next track.

8. Release Me.  okay full disclosure, i really didn’t like this track at first.  the verses were fine but the choruses always felt really cheesy and like, basic and they didn’t mesh with me at all.  BUT, then i had a personal experience with this song.  i’ve been writing to the tracks playing on loop this whole time, but i haven’t even started this song yet because i know i’m gonna tear up if i tell this story while it’s playing.  the lyrics in the middle of the song (verse 2 onward) speak about wanting to be free of a ghost of someone, free of the past, free of what’s holding you back from living your life and being in a world that’s calling you out into the wide open experience.  this, as people close to me know, hits super close to home.  i’ve spent the last several years quite literally fighting to get haunting memories and lingering fragments of other people out of my psyche, and 2018 is the year i finally started doing it.  i was standing on the beach last month, and while i was standing there, i couldn’t help but mouth the lines “now i wanna be the writer of this song, and a love, not just a longing, in a world that is just calling me to be free.”  perhaps this doesn’t mean much to anyone else, but as someone who’s spent the last 2 or so years basically fighting for my sanity, my safety and my ability to trust people again, being able to finally look up, without the weights holding you down, it can be a pretty moving experience.  there’s a whole story as to who and why and what went down to cause me to be like this, but all you need to know is that... perhaps even though these last few years have been a hell for me, that i’ve started looking upwards, i made it through the darkest part of the storm, and i can tough out the rest.  that’s why this song means so much to me.  i almost started crying earlier because i tried to explain it to a friend and i couldn’t put it into words right.  it’s the entire reason i started doing this analysis.  i wanted to put down why i love this work so much, how it changed me personally, and what it means to me.  so here the fuck i am.  as for the song itself?  the production is simple yet efficient, the lyrics are great.  i love the lines about being forever loving of someone, but not being able to forgive them for leaving you for so long.  i also really love the lines about “some people don’t believe us, the things that have been spoken, would leave anyone heartbroken.”  i’m not going to explain why but it’s a bit personal, all you need to know.  i really like the vocal melody and the part “i’ve been the best, at doing the best that i can” because, i’ve been fighting and almost giving up for so long, and only just now am i getting a footing.  the organ embellishments here are also super fucking good.  the bridge is also heavenly.  ok i’ll shut up now.

Stars.  this track i still don’t quite completely understand.  i love the vocal melody and simple production, the strings work so effectively.  i love the line “be brave now, who will i be in the end?”  it’ so effectively gets across a concept that not many people ever will have to face.  “you know there’s no walking away now” you can’t walk away from a changing self.  i honestly think the song is a bit of a reflection on not only the person listening’s self, but how people become and change as a whole.  the unifying experience of changing and growing and becoming someone new, without ever realizing it.  nihilism, sonder, all existential concepts about how not only we experience ourselves, but how everyone else experiences themselves too.  the waltz rhythms all over this track, while simple, really work to this tracks advantage.  the whole thing has this motion to it, i don’t think it would’ve in 4/4.  it’s a track that manages to stay still and spin so much at the same time.  mesmerizing.

10. Tusker 4.  this and the next track are the first 2 songs i really got into on this record, and they’re both fantastic.  i love the opening riff. the weird chord structure.  the vocal background textures.  i love the lyrics about all the things the subject has, from so much love, to car keys, to piles of dirt, to feelings hurt.  it has this immense motion about it again, much like slow dance.  this album doesn’t really let you sit still.  even on tracks like stars, you can feel the world spinning still.  the high background noises on this track add so much to the track while being barely audible, it’s so nice.  the vocal backgrounding on “little hands / big demands / things i don’t need” is so nice.  the chorus here soars again, this time like you’re holding hands with someone.  spinning them around, so much love to give, so you do.   i love the melodic minor esque chord structure with the majors on the upswings, minors on the downswings.  it gives this all a very otherworldly vibe, and yet it still feels like it takes place in your backyard.

11. House on Valentine.  favorite track.  hands down.  the brass here makes this song so much.  i love the way how it’s organize and sounds.  the lyrics are so nice.  this song is everything i ever wanted.  i won’t lie, even without the intended meaning, this song still works so well.  you can get vibes of personal growth, change, being afraid of the unknown, and yet still brave to jump into it.  moving on from someone, saying goodbye, goodnight for infinity.  i love how this song sounds so, sub/urban and train-like almost?  the production has this forward motion that you could almost hear a train over, and it feels so well for what it is.  also the part where Inara’s vocals soar and the song is sprung into this perfectly still air, it’s fucking blissful as all hell.  the goodbye choruses at the bridge?  fucking incredible.  everytime i hear that bridge, i get chills and goosebumps, it makes me so incredibly emotional.  goodbye!  goodbye!  goodbye!  it’s so cheery, you can feel the humanity bleeding out of every seam of it.  you know the goodbyes are cheerful, but you know the person behind them is teary eyed and scared, just a bit.  but not enough to stop them.  say goodbye to the house on valentine, say goodnight for infinity.

12. Everybody.  i love this track just the same.  the ending of a perfect album and a flawless trilogy.  the empty sound of it all, it’s after everybody has gone home.  you are left alone with yourself and what we started with.  it almost feels like a sonic parallel to crazy in a way.  i absolutely love the “the space that i have made, the parts that i have played, it doesn’t go away, it doesn’t go away, i’ll never go away.”  it feels like you’re driving out of the town this all took place in, looking back on the places you watched flourish and shine so bright, be so lively, and have so much memory attached to them.  it doesn’t go away.  it leaves you with a name, try to say it once a day.  god i fucking love this song.  it haunts you of everything this album stands for, and everything it represents.  but not in a bad way, it makes sure you remember that you were there for it.  you experienced everybody’s experiences, and even though the curtains of the play have been drawn, everyone said goodbye, it remains.  it sticks with you.  i’ll never go away.

in short, is it clear i love this fucking album now?  i’m not going to review meditation, as it’s a vinyl only track and while, not filler, it’s all instrumental.  i love the fact it’s so ethereal and spacey, it feels like you’re looking out into space the night after you went through all the photographs of everybody.  their experiences will stay with you.  or at least i hope so.

Calling Out My Mutuals

Ok so this is organized by who I met one here in my earlier days vs my later tumblr days.

@kpopstarsreact- Kat, you were the first mutual I made on tumblr, and now you are one of my best friends. I love you more than words can describe. I can talk to you about so much and we do so many weird things. I can’t for our yearly travel plans, our fun roadtrips, and all of the things we will do in the future. You are amazingly wonderful and I love you too much.

next up I like to refer to them as the infamous three bc they were some of the first friends I made here and I tag them in everything and they are all amazingly talented

@huntingfire2001- KT, Another one of my first mutuals. I love how we could rant about our shared biases and our love for classical music.We could talk about upcoming performances and new sheet music we got. I love you so much and you are just amazing.

@iamjungkooked- Ahh, my wonderful Gia. I am amazed at how far you have come. You are doing such a wonderful job whether it be your writing or the fact that you are in NURSING SCHOOL!!!! You are a wonderful woman and put so much effort into what you do and I admire you so much. (I also still ship Gikyun and Giffrey so bad)

@kimjongdaely-  Kam!!!!! I remember when I used to read all the stuff you posted and I admired you sooo much. And then you and I became friends and I was shocked that someone like you would want to be mutuals to a measly lazy writer like me. You are so talented and wonderful. You are always so kind to me and always a blast to be around. I love you Kam! You are the best (also you are still absolutely stunning!!)

@lives4yongguk- Ana, you and I can talk for hours. You sit there and put up with my no makeup ugly face at 1 pm or my sister just yelling at me. You take care of me and listen to me. I can’t wait to visit you, and send care packages when I start making money. You’ve listened to so much of my past and you don’t look at me with pity like a lot of people do and I admire that. You always find ways to make me laugh and make me jealous of you (beautiful mother fucker). I love you so freaking much!
