I think specificially Dark Souls, no matter how interesting the story is, is not a game that I can play without being hit by the Bad Memories Beam. I like being Told About Dark Souls, I like Discovering the Story, I can't fucking play because it reminds me of that one afternoon where my ex would not stop pestering me until i gave up and said ok as he shoved a controller in my hand and then i died and i was so mad because i did not want to play this game in the first place. And it was just a symptom of how he treated me overall and I don't know if I'll ever be really able to divorce the game from that.
