Hey everyone, I’m back with another monthly challenge! For the months of November AND December, I am formally challenging any willing writer to take a stab at writing fanfiction including a Wrong/Mistaken Recipient using their choice of Criminal Minds characters! Detective Comics Comics comes to you and offers you the opportunity to write Batman for a year. What story do you tell in that time?

god that's easily enough time to do like 4 or 6 storylines, assuming I can cha cha slide away from any crossovers or other editorially mandated bullshit. I'm not going to come up with all of these right away but listen. listen.

the first three issues are Scarface and I'm sorry because I know that sucks, but he's actually going to do something interesting this time. it opens with him and Wesker breaking out of Arkham fucking Yet Again and we alternate between him traveling (ooh, he's getting out of Gotham in a hurry, where's he going?) and the Bats trying to figure out what the goal is. so the hook is that there's a doll that's Definitely Not Annabelle but she is a very famous allegedly haunted doll. call her Clarabelle or something. and Scarface has a stupid fat crush on her and wants to make her his doll bride, which absolutely 0 of his henchmen have the strength to argue with.

the fun part is that the DC universe being what it is, Clarabelle is definitely for real haunted as shit. that's like the second issue reveal. and she's WAY more fucked up and evil than Scarface, who she's very willing to doll-marry to get his goons and take over Gotham. so we're going to get Bruce calling up everyone he knows, really flipping through the rolodex of anyone who might know shit about magic. hitting up Kate like "you do supernatural stuff sometimes, right?" and she's like "absolutely not, call Zatanna" and Zatanna's like "I am So Fucking Busy, can't you bother Jason Blood?" and Jason Blood is understandably like "this is not a problem that would be solved by the presence of Etrigan, try the Spectre" and the Spectre's like "fuck off. have you called John Constantine?" at which point Bruce decided he's just going to take his chances with a batarang and sheer chutzpah.

and it works because of course it does, the story ends when he just batarangs our girl Clarabelle right in the face to stop her from killing Wesker. at no point does this arc reveal whether or not Scarface is supernatural or not, even Claraballe has no idea what's going on there and she doesn't want to.

'What IP do you most want to see in Magic the Gathering?' Thunderwoodd: Stormlight Archive!

thyfoolish1: Brandon said they reached out to him and he was excited and ready to go but they haven't gotten back to him. I think this was Dragonsteel last year. So there is hope.

Egi_: Even after the shitshow with the free book he gave them on the condition it wouldn't be commercialized and then WotC commercialized it?

Brandon Sanderson: I knew what I was getting into working with a big corporation. Like the proverbial frog giving a ride to a scorpion, I don't see justification for complaint regarding the eventual sting. I love the game, and the designers, so that's really my metric. As a note, everyone I worked with on the narrative team was wonderful.

I don't want a passing secret lair of five cards; I am interested in a full-blown set, so with that constraint, I wouldn't foresee a Stormlight or Mistborn crossover until one of several things happens:

1) They burn through the bigger properties that match MTG's vibe like LOTR did. Fantasy, or science fantasy, properties that feel legit as a big expansions. As mentioned in this thread alone, there is a pretty deep mine there. Dune, Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Arcane/LoL, Westeros (if they're feeling spicy.) A hobbit set is all but inevitable as well.

Considering they'd be unwise to put these sorts of things out too quickly, and should really give them time to breathe, we're looking at ten years easily before they're out of larger fish to fry. Stormlight is big for a book series, but without any shows/films/games, I'd suspect it doesn't have the casual word-of-mouth reach their marketing team looks for to justify the extra expense of licensing fees.

2) Said bigger properties decide they aren't interested, leaving things popular but without media representation. If they ever decided to experiment with a book-only series, I suspect I'd be very high on the list to approach.

3) Cosmere gets one of said media properties, something I'm actively trying to accomplish--but it is slow going, as I'm in the fortunate position of being able to be very picky about partners, and prefer to take my time.

I've made it clear to them that if a large-scale set were in the, ahem, cards, I'd be willing to make frequent trips to Seattle to be part of the design team on said set.

awakenedjunkofigure: If any author deserves the pick of the litter for production companies, it's absolutely you. Can't wait to see what your books would look like on-screen!!

Brandon Sanderson: Well, the answer to what they'd look like on screen is "Expensive," which a part of the problem...

schloopers: Any large consideration in your mind for spoilers versus fully representing a world or story?

Stormlight you’d of course want all 10 Orders, so spoilers are far as those are concerned are a given.

But maybe a legendary creature “Iron Eyes” instead of any spoiler specific proper names?

I ask because I have so far gotten one friend in the playgroup to start reading, and a couple full sets would for sure help in garnering interest, but I would worry for the story beats getting too greatly revealed out of context.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just unavoidable. I’ve had several Dr. Who episodes “spoiled” for me through that set.

Brandon Sanderson:  This is something I haven't given a lot of thought toward, but I perhaps should be mulling it over. You make a good point.

Thunderwoodd: Woah! Can’t believe you responded. Huge fan! And I loved your commander cube! Saw it on Game Knights right after I finished Rhythm of War.

Curious, do you think the Radiant orders could correspond to guilds or color wedges?

Brandon Sanderson: Yes, I've done thought experiments on that, and think guilds could actively work for them without too much trouble. Problem is, would we want a Stormlight set or just a Knights Radiant set, because ten guilds for ten orders is already a high demand. It might be better to make a wedge set, but the problem there is that the Radiants are actively all colors, so it would be hard to cut out any save black. (Willshaper individuality and artistic expression could be green red instead of red black, for example.) So maybe five four-color wedges? I think the lore could support this, and be something that MTG has had trouble conveying without the expansive worldbuilding an entire book series could provide.

Radiants and sapient spren (all but black, to indicate the inherent selfless Radiant cause)

Human Nations (all but green, to indicate triumph over nature, which is an antagonist on Roshar.)

Singers (All but blue, to indicate the lack of ability to plan for the future, dearth of scholars, and onset of madness in the fused.)

Non-sapient Spren and wildlife (All but white, to indicate lack of overriding societal structures.)

Secret Societies (All but red, indicting the deliberate and conscious planning of these groups.)

Four color signpost uncommons would be WILD, even with hybrid mana. So I can see the design team balking. This (four color guild set) is almost certainly something they've explored and specifically decided not to do.

mediocreattbest: It’s crazy coming onto this post to say “any cosmere set!” And then see you actually replying. Out of curiosity, would you prefer just a stormlight set or a cosmere-wide set? I’d love to see characters through their stories (like we had with the LotR set)

Brandon Sanderson: I'd prefer Stormlight or Mistborn alone, as the planets themselves are so much a part of the stories.

i used to answer every single comment i got, honestly, unless it came by years after i posted it-- the only reason i dont as much anymore is because it gets REALLY overwhelming for me to respond to everyone after the initial barrage 😅😅 the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak etc etc. but i do read every comment and appreciate them SO SO MUCH, and whenever i find one particularly moving or want to just reassure people im still working on something i'll respond to those :]

What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

not counting the wips that just never got finished and left off before their main shit could resolve, id say at times so self destructive (BNHA)-- i mean i LITERALLY ended it with izuku potentially dying 😭😭😭😭

What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

tbh i dont think i write happy endings so much as i write hopeful, bittersweet, or open-ended ones-- i tend to like catharsis more than fluff when it comes down to it. but out of my fluff fics i think honey it's starting to storm (HC) is one of the genuinely sweetest ive written. my runner-ups on that would probably be when the smoke does finally pass (TMA) and or we could just have conversation (MSA) :]

Do you write crossovers?

not typically, and ive never published any, but i am definitely not immune to them 😂😂😂😂 i think my most niche crossover ive actually written (never to see the light of day) was a Nine Lives of Chloe King and Supernatural fic that was the definition of self-indulgent rot. only a little less niche than that was a Mortal Instruments and Supernatural crossover (theres a running theme here lol) lying in snippets on an ancient google doc in my oldest gmail acct. reread that one recently and its shockingly coherent for being written in like. 2016. id even call it decent (though theres a lot id change up if i were writing it now)

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

idk if it'd be considered hate but once i wrote a fic inspired by someone else's when i was very new to ao3, let them know (i didnt know about the "inspired by" option back then), and they got mad at me in my comments section because in their words, "its better than mine" 😭😭😭😭💥💥💥💥💥💥

like my pal karliahs im gonna rip these from the comments ive received 😅😅😅 but id definitely say imagery is my strongest skill!! i have a very strong imagination, and tend to see fic scenes as movie scenes in my head which i then transcribe into written format. id like to say im also really skilled at characterization and realistic dialogue that captures character voices very well!! and frankly i just love emotional realism so much i cant NOT write it, its always leaking into everything i do

What are your writing weaknesses?

i tend to get a little too funky and abstract with my descriptions sometimes-- that can work for some scenes, but grounding everything so that it feels more real and makes actual sense to the reader is something i often have to do on the second, third, and final passes

also to every person who has to crack open a thesaurus to understand what i write, i am so fucking sorry😭💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

no thoughts beyond if its not a language you're proficient in you should probably get that checked over by a native speaker, just in case :P

Hiiiii, re ur post abt goals and the whole being more active in the community thing -- I'll try to remember to interact with u more than just liking/reblogging things! I've been super quiet on my own blog since I had burnout two years ago but I'm trying to get back into doing more than just occasionally posting fic, and honestly I love a lot of ur head canon posts and metas etc. I probably won't read any of ur fic because I'm a Bit Weird in that for some reason I hate reading fic in the fandoms I write for (but still love metas and headcanons? Brains sure are weird) but everything else I'll try to actually Write Words instead of letting my thoughts stay in my head!

I would totally welcome conversation, and it’s great to know that you are open to it, too. Because I feel like Tumblr as a platform runs on a parallel play model on purpose, and most people probably just want to do that, and my hesitation in going full throttle about using Tumblr the way I would want is my fear that it is going to be obnoxious/overbearing/overwhelming (e.g. driving people to madness via “Why is this person talking to me… I didn’t want to talk to them...”).

It’s so funny you should say that, re: enjoying hcs/meta but not fanfic in your writing fandoms, because I think about that divide a lot! Half the time I spend writing most* headcanon posts is actually time spent workshopping “sooooo…. how do I say this without saying ‘well, in my fanfic…’” because it’s probably something I already wrote in fanfic or notes for fanfic, but 1) I want to talk to people about it, and the chances that I will get to if it’s written in a fanfic are fairly slim, and 2) I want to hear other people’s versions of it, too. In their fanfic, if they write fanfic, but also their posts or tags!

But that can be complicated because in my mind, [insert headcanon post topic] tends to be fairly situated in context—the context of fic things having happened, or things that are going to happen, or thematic undercurrents/relationships—so it becomes a project in trying to make the proposition NOT sound completely bananas without that context/something being written in a particular way. Which can sometimes be its own kind of fun and is sometimes like “good grief, I could have simply been writing more fanfic!” (I feel like I should emphasize here that no one should feel obligated to read my fanfic. I mean, I want people to want to read it! But I very much do not want anyone to feel like they Have To or like they need to explain why they’re not!)

Our approaches are opposite, in that my brain is fanfic forward, both for myself and for others’ fanfic. But I do feel like a lot of RP blogs share your orientation re: not wanting to read other versions of the character they write for! I don’t know if this is where you, specifically, are coming from, but I’ve read on some of the RP blogs that it has a lot to do with having a strong investment in their own particular color on things, and wanting that centered and front of mind. (Which isn’t to say that sentiment isn’t true of most people, I think, because otherwise they wouldn’t write them that way—it’s true of me—but ymmv on how much someone wants to see the other iterations.)

For me, I know that I’m a lot less adventurous about Interpretations That Excite Me for my blorbos than other characters I might read for. Like, to use a silly example, in my mind Soi Fon is 100% Lesbian (which stands out in my headcanon space because I generally assume most everyone in Bleach would be on some level willing to get down with most anyone else), but did I click on Soi Fon/Vegeta when I came across it anyway? Absolutely I did. I barely know who Vegeta is. But my down-to-clown boundaries with Soi Fon are very low, nearly tabula rasa, so go get Vegeta, girl!!!! Whereas for like, Hitsugaya, I’m probably not going to read Hitsugaya/Vegeta because I am not actually a crossover person, my knowledge of DBZ is limited to The Osmotic Experience of Having Grown Up in the 90s, and my favorite version of Hitsugaya’s sex life is the absence of one.

*Of course, there are other headcanons posts in the omake/filler vein that are simply too dumb (affectionate) for me to want to write full fanfic of, like the Gotei regatta or the Gotei bowling league, or that “I think the average shikai user would probably be pretty good at driving a car but they would NOT be considerate or lawful users of said car” post.

Look, this is gonna sound absolutely unhinged, but hear me out. (insane rambles under the cut, this bitch is LONG)

In April, a friend and I had a conversation about a song I wrote and how it was. Well, kinda coded to Vox and Valentino.

Then one thing led to another, and two-and-a-bit months and twelve thousand words later, I had written an absolutely sprawling shitshow of a fic (details later in the post)

Even as I was writing it, I knew the written word didn't do it justice.

Hence, this post. 

(golly, this sounds really demanding, I am so sorry)

Fuck it, my mom always says "if you don't ask you don't get", and for once I want her to be right.

This is, I suppose, a sort of... call to action, for lack of a better term.

Artists, animators and voice actors, I'd like your help to turn this fic into an animatic, or if we can manage it, an actual animation.

ONLY if we can manage it, not if it's gonna stress anyone out.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Just to get this out of the way, not that I should even need to say this but it's unfortunately 2024. If anyone even SUGGESTS using A.I. your ass is getting blocked. I don't fuck with that artificial bullshit.

On to my next point: I am unequivocally in support of artists and actors being paid for their work. 

However, I am a Broke Bitch. Unless we could somehow do crowdfunding or something, I physically would not be able to pay people. This makes me feel like a very shitty person, but unfortunately it's the truth, and I want to be upfront and honest about that.

This is why I hope to get as many people on board as possible for this project, so nobody has to do a shit-ton of work.

I understand that most of you are busy, with work, school/college, or life generally life-ing. Join the club, my life is hectic too.

This is why I really have no set deadline for this. Whether it takes a few months or a few years, as long as it's done well with a minimal amount of stress.

The short answer is YEAH, cause Hazbin is a musical. I cannot stress enough how much the music is My Problem. Literally, apart from people singing, I will take care of that.

My Idea Of The Process 

(please bear in mind I have little to no idea of how the animation process works so this is almost definitely wrong, please feel free to correct me about it)

Step 1. Storyboard

Step 2. Voice lines and songs get recorded

Step 3. Animatic (this could very well end up being as far as it gets and that is absolutely cool beans)

Possible Step 4. Animation

Finally, I'd be more than happy to be the one to edit all the clips together. Editing is its own kind of hell, and I'm totally willing to take one for the team.

The Vision

This is. (fffffff) this is the part that's gonna make me sound like a Draconian jerk but I promise I don't mean to come across this way.

I'm hoping to have something that's as close to the style of the show as possible. (this video kinda has the right vibes) This is so the final project will look cohesive and somewhat professional. (god that probably sounded so bad but I genuinely have no idea how else to say it)

TO BE ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. I have nothing against artists with other distinctive art styles, in fact I've come across several that I absolutely love.

Regarding The Writing

I've never directed anything before, so forgive me if this is crossing a line, but like. 

I have my vision for how I want this to go and I'm kind of. not overly flexible on that. Obviously ideas that people have to get this to work good are more than welcome, but they might not end up happening.

Not to be a dick, but I am sorta the director so I do kinda get to make the call on that stuff. (ew god that felt odd)

If this gets off the ground, I'd have to turn this 12,000 word fic into a script to make it easier for people to read it and not get bogged down by my weird old-fashioned poetic style. This would be sent out to people who express interest at some point.

Just a heads-up: If you're expecting an AO3 link I am so sorry but it's Google Docs, mainly because this thing is wildly self-indulgent and I, for one, do not fancy attracting potential haters. Most people are nice, some are very vocally not. Besides, what would be the fun if everyone knew the story in advance?

I'm working this fix-it/crossover au for MW where the tulpar crew find themselves on an alien planet with the only other humans there being a plucky young girl and her estranged clumsy father who pilots a mech.

In the story the father character ends up befriending Anya and they kind of dynamic that some people might interpret as potentailly romantic.

But the thing is, I've written a whole storyline where the father and Curly end up falling in love and becoming a couple.

The problem i'm having is the fear of the potential backlash for giving the "rape apologist" a happy ending while the victim is denied a potentially healthy relationship because I the writer quote "want to have her yaoi fantasy with the person who enabled the rape of the female" (other people's words, not mine) It's less about how I think or feel, and more of a concern for my safety with the way the fandom has been treating those who try to give curly nuance

Anon, I'm going to gently sit you down when I say this. And I mean it with the utmost love and care in my heart because that concept sounds fucking awesome as hell.

Do Whatever You Want. Forever.

I understand it is a really scary concept to try to do something with Curly's character and be afraid of the backlash you'll receive because Curly in their eyes is this big nasty, ugly rape apologist. That is the unfortunate situation of liking characters that are just uncomfortable to are morally grey in any way. Over the last month or so I have received countless, countless, death threats, for implying that Curly is an abuse victim or that Jimmy is in any way shape or form human. And It's extremely disheartening, I know. But those people that make me only want to fight harder and help people see the characters for what they are, to open up different angles.

Your interpretation of Curly doesn't need to be perfect or true to his character down to the last period. It's your fic, you decide this. And I understand your fears, in fandom spaces that blow up as quickly as Mouthwashing did in terms of audience and meta discussions, attempting to please absolutely everyone all at once is impossible because opinions are a spectrum of thought, no matter what you do someone is always going to have a slightly different interpretation of a scene or a character, even if it's off by the tiniest smidge.

Anya doesn't need to be with someone to have a happy ending, she can find fulfilment and freedom without a relationship and I wish more people were willing to understand a relationship doesn't fix stuff, nor does it necessarily make things easier either.

Do not worry, I think that fic concept is absolutely baller, and I will be in your corner ready to fight. To explore characters and write about them isn't about filling out a checklist, it's about having fun, it's about the experience and sharing it with other people who are willing and ready to listen and enjoy the content you put out, which I am very, very certain people will.

Small tangent on Bette Kane and how people treat her

re-reading Beast Boy (2000) in order to really get a sense of where Bette was pre-Batwoman run (2014).

Does anyone else just feel sad whenever Bette brings up Titans West and everyone shoots her down? Objectively, I know that no one thinks Teen Titans West is a great team - especially when people like Hawk and Dove seem better off solo. But you do get a sense of loneliness whenever Bette is so excited at the prospect of getting the band back together.

Given that it's become sort of a running gag for Bette to suggest reforming Titans West, it is something that DC is aware of.

As the Beast Boy run continues, Gar gets himself into incriminating shapeshifter trouble and is put in a holding cell by the police. Bette goes to help him in her Flamebird costume (notably the one from the 80s).

After reading a lot of her earlier appearances in older Titans comics, this kind of exasperated annoyance when Bette makes an appearance is surprisingly frequent. She doesn't have a great reputation among the other Titans at least.

Later on in issue #2, Nightwing hears of Gar's predicament and goes to LA. In the next issue, he fights an enemy shapeshifter who was impersonating Gar. Bette shows up back in the police station to try and bail Gar out, but her check is invalid and the police officer from the prior issue rips it in half. Bette mentions, confused, that she's never tried to post bail before and that she even borrowed money from her Aunt Kathy. (Knowing that Catherine Hamilton wasn't created until the Batwoman series, I personally think this Kathy is supposed to be Kathy Kane.)

When the police learn that Nightwing is fighting "Beast Boy", the heroes learn that the murders of the previous issues were the cause of an impersonator trying to frame Gar. Bette leaves and goes to help Nightwing.

This is the first time I've seen Dick and Bette interacting outside of brief Titans crossovers. It's super obvious that he thinks she's annoying and that she's not skilled enough to be a vigilante. He cuts her off mid-speech and tries to sideline her when they fight the shapeshifter. When it inevitable gets away, he puts the blame on her involvement. Later on, he leaves her to deal with the police and the public on her own.

Putting all of these panels together, the writers are making Bette out as not a "real" hero, someone who clings to the past. In comics like this, Bette is always treated like that annoying little girl who doesn't know when to give up. Especially because Bette has never had her own solo comic, all of her characterization comes with the perspective of whoever's run she's cameoing in.

I am willing to concede that Beast Boy is a very early 2000s comic but since Bette is the only other female character in it besides two villains - it doesn't look good overall. Not to mention, this comic still sticks with the continuity of "Bette has a crush on/is obsessed with Nightwing." ANYWAY this leads to some panels that I actually like, even if it comes off rude and a little misogynstic with Dick telling Bette what to do.

It's that last little declaration of defiance that really solidifies to her character to me. Bette Kane has never needed permission to do anything, especially not being a hero. Also, this kinda puts back into canon that Dick was the inspiration for Bette becoming Flamebird.

When it comes to her characterization, I can't help but feel like she should be (rightly) a little bitter about this convo. When we get her back in Batwoman, Kate doesn't treat her as an equal either and also tries to get her to quit. Bette is a bit younger in the Batwoman run since I think it's post-one of many reboots, but it just adds onto the lack of trust anyone has in her.

Despite being Bruce's cousin, she's a blip in the wider Batman comic-verse. I'm pretty sure Bette hasn't directly interacted with Bruce in a comic, much less anyone other than Dick, Kate, or Cass (once).

All of this goes to say that I'm definitely addressing all of that and making it a main point in my fics. My Flamebird-in-Gotham au came about specifically because I want to reconcile the Bette Kane I like with the way others in-universe treat her. Bette deserves to be treated with respect. Trust me, there will be words had in fanfic form.

(Also bc I just think Bette and Damian interacting would be both interesting and funny).

Hiding in the Blue (Safe Between the Clouds)

(Yo! Rats x Pirates SMP content here folks! Get your fresh crossover here! Starting at Martyn's Finale for Rats)

Every rat had just disappeared into the snow-covered bush to start looking for a new home to settle in. Scott had been behind everyone else, walking beside Martyn. Scott was about to follow but paused, his ear twitching as he turned his head, frowning as he watched Martyn sprinting in the opposite direction. Finding it odd, he glanced back at the bushes. He promised himself he would get Martyn then he would regroup. He set down the food he had and scampered after the snow tracks that Martyn made.

Scott followed the tracks until they led him to a shore of some sort. Scott’s ears twitched as he wondered why Martyn would come here. He spotted Martyn on the ice, looking around it seemed. He was about to call out, but his voice caught in his throat as Martyn seemingly disappeared down a hole in the ice. His tail flicked in annoyance as he hugged his shoulders, shivering slightly, he scurried over to where he disappeared.

He looked into the icy water and took a deep breath before plunging in after the wayward rat. Immediately, his senses heightened as cold filled his body. Squinting his eyes, he could just see the outline of Martyn disappearing down a crack in the seabed. Scott swam after him, diving down the crevice as well. He was startled as he fell into a small cave. Shivering, he could hear Martyn talking to himself as he stepped deeper. He called out, “Martyn! What are you doing?” His eyes widened as reached a larger part of the cave. Covering his mouth with his paws, he stared at the purple portal. A shiver went down his spine as something shifted within him. Martyn stared at him wide-eyed, clearly not expecting to be followed, standing directly in front of the portal.

“You’re not supposed to be here,” Martyn said, clearly baffled. “Why did you follow me!? You were supposed to be with everyone else.” He exclaimed.

Rubbing his paws together, Scott replied, “I saw you turn away from the group, so I followed you to ask where you were going.” He stared at the portal. “Martyn… What is this?” he asked hesitantly.

Martyn bit his lip, looking conflicted before his gaze hardened. “Scott, go back. I’ll be okay. I know what I am doing.” He turned away from him. “I need to keep going. Goodbye, Scott.” With that, Martyn stepped through the portal, becoming lost in the swirls.

Squeaking with alarm, Scott rushed forward. He scampered to the edge of the now flickering portal. He glanced back towards the entrance, thinking of the other rats. Owen is a great leader, capable and strong. Eloise will help him; she always is willing to do so. Acho will be there if needed, he was always a reasonable rat.  They don’t need him; they will be fine. He looked forward to the portal once again.

He didn’t know what Martyn had gotten himself into, but he was alone. Martyn could be killed or trapped without someone there to help him. He needs to have at least one person looking out for him. He glanced back once more, saying a silent goodbye, before deciding to step through the portal.

A shutter ran through him as the warmth of the portal encased him. He felt himself relaxing in this strange purple existence. The warmth reminded Scott of the human fireplaces within the mansion. He felt his eyelids getting heavy the farther he floated. He thought he could hear whispers and flashes of purple wings and eyes cross his vision, but the call of the void was too strong. He passed out feeling as if someone grabbed him with celestial hands.

Cold water covered him, shocking him from slumber. Scott flailed for a moment before his head breached the surface of the water. Sputtering and coughing, Scott paddled his way to the dirt shore. He pulled himself out and coughed up the rest of the water that was in his lungs. He sat there, panting for a moment, catching his breath. He peeked backward to find what he had fallen into.

 It was small a pond with a possible stage built into it. His breath caught in his throat in awe as he spotted the cliff and waterfall behind it, along with human-sized pillars leading to the cliff. There was light coming from the shade of the cliff as well. He stood up on shaky legs as he turned a slow circle.

There was so much around him. A large orange tent, a cave with seemingly a kitchen, and a large mess hall area. There was always a path leading to a dock and two more leading in different directions. One heading towards the forest, the other heading towards the cliffs. He spotted a large field of an array of different vegetables, a cow sounded in the distance, so he guessed there was a farm somewhere near there as well. 

He also noted that the weather is different as well. No snow in sight. He felt a warm summer breeze brush through his fur as he stepped away from the pond. His cold body quickly warmed in the tropical weather. His ears twitched a bit, wondering why Martyn didn’t bring everyone here. This is a paradise compared to the snowy wonderland at home. He sighed. He could get answers went he found him again.

He rubbed the extra water off his face before deciding on the kitchen. Knowing Martyn, he might be getting food. The blue-haired rat scurried across the grass; ears perked for any sign of humans. Pausing at the entrance, Scott's ears shot up in excitement. Unlike the cook at home, pots were unsupervised, and ingredients were everywhere. His eyes sparkled at all the possibilities, rubbing his paws together. He hopped up onto the counter and peered into the pot. Dumplings floated lazily in the boiling water. His shoulders slumped as he realized he couldn’t do anything to help.

Suddenly feeling very dumb, he grabbed his face and smacked his cheeks a bit. “Scott. Focus. Cooking later, find Martyn first.” He again looked around, frowning not seeing any signs of another rat going through here. He ran across the counter and was about to scurry down when he heard footsteps approaching.

Scrambling, the blue rat leaped into a backpack that was leaning against the counter. Thinking quickly, he buried himself as deep in as he could, hearing a male human humming a strange song. His heartbeat was loud in his ears as he waited with bated breath. The human moved around, boots clicking against the floor. Scott nearly squeaked as light flooded the backpack but was quickly buried underneath a ton of dumplings. As quickly as the avalanche of dumplings started, it stopped, and darkness consumed the inside of the backpack once again. He let out a relieved breath, thinking it was over.

He squeaked as the pack started to move. He was thrown to the side as the human put the pack on his back. Soon the movement evened out into rhythmic steps of walking. Cautiously, Scott peeked out of the backpack. He looked around him, watching as the forest passed. He was grateful he didn’t choose the forest as he spotted skeletons with bows, eyeing the person he was with up. Gulping, he mentally urged the human to start moving, and miraculously, the guy did, probably having seen the monsters as well. He ducked down and let the human carry him to the unknown.

It was far too short of a ride in Scott’s opinion as the movement around him stopped. He immediately moved to hop out past the human but was dumped into a barrel. He was disoriented from the suddenness of falling. He let out a startled squeal as he was scuffed and lifted. The cyan-furred rat’s mouth went dry when he locked eyes with a gingered-haired human scowling at him.

Magpies around suddenly started cawing and chatting excitedly. They cawed, “Rat Scott! Rat Scott! Why is Rat Scott here? Cute! I miss rats.” The human shooed the crazed birds away, looking rather confused, but didn’t let it bother him. The ginger turned back to him, studying him curiously. Scott shrunk away from the scrutinizing gaze, balling himself up.

“Hmph. Never seen a blue rat before nor one wearing clothes. Perhaps Martyn will know where you came from. Rats seem to gravitate towards him.” Blue eyes bore into Scott, making him tremble, not registering anything he was saying, his blood rushing in his ears was too loud to hear over. “Or if he doesn’t, I could always add you as a discovery. You are rather cute.”

The human placed the rat on his palm and then used both hands to cup him close to his chest. Using a pinky finger, the ginger stroked the trembling figure’s fur, humming a soft tune to soothe the rat. The cyan-haired rat was surprised to find himself relaxing in the gentle grasp of his odd human. For some reason, he could tell this human had no intention of hurting him, feeling as if he was connected to him. Scott shook off the feeling, finally having his breathing under control.

The man smiled down at the rat once he noticed the shaking stop. “There. See? I won’t hurt you, little rat.” He held him a little tighter, not enough to hurt, but just to be snug. “Now, off to find that Kestrel.” The human started walking, making the farmer rat tense ever so slightly.

The destination that the ginger had in mind was a relatively short walk, with the human occasionally petting Scott’s back, keeping him calm. The whole time Scott could only think of where they were going. Sure, the guy said that he wasn’t going to hurt him, but that doesn't mean someone else won’t. He worried his lip, tail in his paws as he thought how he should have just stayed with the group. He bet Owen and the others were worried sick about Martyn and him. He just wanted his family to be together.

Scott’s depressive thoughts were interrupted by the shout of the human. “Martyn! You here?” The ginger called.

The rat’s ears perked up at the mention of the name. Martyn!? He’s here? And he’s friends with this human? Scott looked around the fancy tavern area. He didn’t see the Martyn he knew anywhere. The human walked to the bar and called out again.

There was a loud crash heard through the building. Both rat and human looked alarmed before a blond-haired male human rounded the corner, looking frazzled. Following him was a mischief of rats, squealing and squeaking to each other pleasantly. When the blond saw the ginger human, he perked up a bit. “Oh hey, Mr. Denholm. Sorry, I was taking a nap when you called.” The guy smiled at the ginger with a slight blush.

To say Scott was shocked was an understatement. The human sounded and acted just like his Martyn, but he wasn’t! He was not a rat. This was a complete human being. He looked almost the same, the only difference was the small scar under his eye. He had his headband and everything.

“That’s fine, Martyn. And please, just Scott. That’s my father,” The ginger replied with a smile. The rat looked up at the human holding him in disbelief. They share the same name!  I mean Scott isn’t a rare name but it’s odd when there is a human that looks just like your friend and the human holding you looks like you but with ginger hair. “But anyway, have you lost any of your rats recently?”

Martyn looks confused for a moment, “No? I don’t think so anyway. Why?” He questioned.

Scott jolted as he was presented to the human version of his friend. He looked up at the blond in distress as he gripped his tail. He watched as Martyn’s eyes grew wider at the sight of him, stumbling back a little bit.

The rats below started to squeak, “Rat Scott? Didn’t we leave him with the others? Lore? Crossover?” Martyn, in a similar fashion to what human Scott did to his magpies, chased them off.

“Scott, where did you find this rat?” Martyn asked slowly as he approached cautiously. Scott’s ears drooped at the hesitance of his friend.

“I found him in my dumpling barrel,” The ginger gently stroked his spine with a finger making him relax again. “I think he was in my backpack, and I buried him by accident. I was hoping you would recognize him, or if you didn’t, I would make a little encloser for him, as I had never seen a pure blue rat.” Human Scott looked at Martyn sheepishly.

Martyn looked at him and then back to the ginger, clearly conflicted about something. He sighed, rubbing his face then mumbled, “Yes, I recognize this little rat. The thing is, he shouldn’t be here.” Martyn glared at him sharply. Scott shrank under the gaze, avoiding eye contact. He knew Martyn could be intimidating, but at his current size, it was downright horrifying. “Here, I’ll take him.” He extended his hands toward him.

The ginger deflated a little bit. “Oh. Well okay. Take good care of him. He seems like a nice little rat.” Scott scampered out of Human Scott’s hands into Martyn’s awaiting ones. Martyn pressed him close to his chest once he was settled in his hands. “Maybe I can see him again soon?”

Martyn nodded absently, “Yeah, sure.” Martyn was looking Scott over in his hands, checking around him and his body. He seemed relieved once he was done, looking back at human Scott. “Thank you for bringing him to me, Scott. I’ll see you later. I need to take care of him.”

“Alright. Bye-bye, little blue rat. Hope to see you soon!” He smiled at the cyan-haired rat before heading off. Martyn waited for a beat before being him and setting him on the counter.

“Alright now that he’s gone, how are you here?!” Martyn raised his voice at him, gripping his hair. “I told you that I would be okay! And how did you get through the portal anyway!? You were supposed to stay in that world! I don’t understand how an NPC could escape its world.” He mumbled the last part to himself as he paced in front of Scott.

“I just was worried about you. You gave me a scare seeing you running away from everyone else! I didn’t want you hurt!” Scott cried. Martyn turned to him, staring at him in complete confusion.

“Well damn. I can’t understand you now. You are just making squeaks for me,” He rubbed his temple. “Well, I guess you being here doesn’t matter anyway. I don’t think I can even get you home if I want to.”

Scott's eyes widened and he squeaked in distress. He began pacing, tugging his ears. What would become of every rat? How would they survive winter without him? They didn’t know anything about being a wild rat. Many were house or city rats. His breathing was picking up as he continued to panic. A sudden large hand on his back made him jump.

Martyn winced, “Sorry about that but you looked like you were about to go into a panic attack.” Martyn gave him a sad expression. “I’m sorry about our friends but I can’t do anything to get back to them.”

Tears gathered in Scott’s eyes as he started to cry. Martyn scooped him up and pressed him into his shirt, soothing him gently with a back rub. He buried his face into the fine cotton of Martyn’s shirt as he clung to him.

Martyn smiled weakly and said, “If it's any consolation, you will like being here. I’ll take care of you and the herons have a lovely field of vegetables.” He rambles on. “And Scott, the guy you just met, loves to cook. You can spend time around there. Heck, maybe you’ll be classified as a discovery by Scott.” The blond scrunched up his face. “That’s going to get confusing. Two Scott’s around here now.” He laughed slightly.

The blue rat sniffled a bit but nodded along with Martyn’s ramble. He wiped his eyes and gave Martyn a watery smile. He’s glad he at least has someone from home, and who knows, maybe he’ll meet more friendly people. Martyn petted his head gently with a kind smile and wiped away the last of his tears.

“There’s the farmer rat I know.” Martyn grinned. “Again, I’m sorry for getting you mixed up in this, Scott. But I will always protect you.” He promised.

And Scott believed him. He will always believe that Martyn will protect him. Scott will do the same for him. He’ll face anything this new world threatens to throw at him to help Martyn. Scott snuggled closer and hugged Martyn tightly. Martyn covered him with his hand protectively, lovingly.

New longform fic in the works!

Hello hello, I've been dead to the world for a while now, but I'm back now!!

I've recently been working on a SVSSS/MDZS crossover, with my dearest son Mo Xuanyu as our MC! The premise goes as follows;

Mo Xuanyu has heard of a cultivation sect far away from all of the clan's politics, called Cang Qiong- the stronghold between the demon realm and the human realm! He's willing to live on the border between realities if it means he can get away from his own personal hell on earth that Mo Village has become. Only, he'll be leaving behind his fiancé... But then, what happens when the clans follow him to Cang Qiong?

As always, I'm soft hearted so there won't be too much angst, but there will definitely be enough hurt/comfort to go around!!

I still can't think of a name for it though 🤔

Technical Aspects;

Finding a good timeline for this fic is hell, I want everyone to know that!!! For SVSSS, the timeline is set a few years past the canon ending of the story, and for MDZS it's set in the very first year after the end of their story.

It's also very far from being canon on either end of the crossover, because (just to state the obvious) Mo Xuanyu is still alive, and so is Shen Jiu! I just really wanted to write a fic that I'd like to read myself, so I'm shoving in as many of my favourite parts from other fics as I can.

I also have an outline written that is. 700 words long right now!! I've only written the prologue!! what am i doing!!!! Though tbf I am on draft four already and im slowly going crazy :)

Also I usually try to write a "prologue" introducing the premise for long form fics and I try to keep it short, so like 1000 words?? but I just kept going and brought it up to 1800 this time T_T The actual chapters will be AT LEAST 2000, but with the way its going right now it'll probably end up longer.

Side note in relation to that, I'm thinking this fic will be like ,,, 7-10 chapters? I'm still in the early stages, but that's my estimation!!

There is also some planned angst between Mo Xuanyu and Nie Huaisang because well, Huaisang did try to manipulate him into killing himself, so. yknow. I personally am not excited for it because I hate writing my skrunklies fighting :((

I also wanted to work in Tianlang-jun and Zhuzhi-lang somewhere, which will probably happen when the whole MDZS crew shows up! Idk I'm not that far in my outline yet ( ╥ω╥ )

Anyway!!!! Credit to this fic by Jenrose!!! It's what gave me the MDZS autism and what inspired this fic a little, despite the fact that there's nearly zero similarities lol

They have NEVER seen your ice/fire curse as something to be looked down upon, but they never really tried to convince you it isn't.

I feel like they'd be too awkward about it knowing the background LMFAO

Because of this, you just kind of thought they were equally as ashamed of you as you were with yourself.

It's some powerful magic shit so they try to tell you to be careful about it, you took it the wrong way

You eventually end up talking to Keyleth about it, and she started squabbling about it to you nervously because she thought she offended you

In all actuality, they all love you and enjoy your company.

They think its cool when you do ice tricks.

It obviously took you a while to warm up to them with fire magic, and its always nice to have around winter.

Pike specifically asks you to warm a lot of stuff up for her, since you figured out how to just make your hands warm.

Usually things like socks, blankets, food, drinks, or for you to boil water in the middle of no where.

It's always a funny conversation to have with her.

"Heyyy.. uhmmm... You mind-"

You take the item and already start heating your hands up.

"No. No I do not."

You love being helpful to them ˙◠˙

Percy likes to bring you to his little workshop and make you his assistant, he finds its much easier to make weaponry or contraptions with someone who can help him bend metal.

"Hands?"

You stick your hands out, and he places a long, thin, spiral of metal on them.

"Thank you." You hum. in response to him.

Percy is so thankful to you out of all of them. He says thank you for every little thing.

if you feeling a little romantical about himm... he says thank you when you hold his hand in the cold or his face in the cold #cuties

BUT ANYWAY

Grog doesn't get it.

I mean, if I was him, I wouldn't either.

With all honesty, he's just worried for you.

At one point you overheard a conversation with him and Pike.

"Are they okay Pikey??? They just lit on fire and shot ice at the same time..˙◠˙"

"Yes, Grog, thats just they're magic.."

(At that point, Pike tried explaining it 13 times to him, and it was 4am)

Vex and Vax are utterly ridiculous about it.

Least petty twin siblings, honestly.

Vex asked you to light her arrow on fire so she could shoot Vax's coat 'accidentally' and burn it.

To be fair, in her defense, he asked you to freeze her gold chest lock so he could steal from her..

At one point, when you were still learning, You froze one of Keyleth's plants, and she got a brain freeze for a solid 15 seconds.

"Oh my GOSH! Keyleth I am so sorry oh my gosh.."

"No-no.. its okayy.. he was almost dead anyway.."

She said, holding her head, groaning from the severe brain freeze she suddenly got.
