"If you swallow the coin from the wishing well
Your dreams will come true in heaven or hell."
6 years, 74 months, and 2252 days ago...my dreams became a reality in a world on which I didn't want to face. The last thing I had left within me was confidence. Grief makes life a whole lot less appealing. To have my first publication be about the death of somebody. I felt like I was a pathetic robber. But everybody around me kept pushing me to the front counter, demanding that I be their voice in a time of silenced cries. With every rejection, I got quieter. Until my words finally came out. For once, I was sincerely happy to be alive. I haven't felt that alive since then.
A lot of my best work revolves around the dead. It's not always intentional. Those who inspire often leave so little, and yet have the biggest impact on the living. It's such a normalized theme for me that I'm almost oblivious to how common and heartfelt it is.
Seattle musicians were/are a sensitive bunch. Their lives continually splashed with grief and death. It's a sad cycle, and I hope it fails to continue in regards to those remaining. It was only recently that I was able to understand and see how truly great my piece was. Why everybody pushed me to submit it. I've always viewed it with a critical eye.
I'm happy it was my first publication.
I wouldn't have it any other way.
