Golden Cage AU, more Elrond Illness Edition. Elrond's fever reaches its peak, forsight mixes itself up with dreams of the past, and Galadriel believes he is going to die. He isn't, he very explicitly gets through the fever and starts to get better, but It's Alot. Tbh, I'm not really sure where this came from and also, I made myself cry writing it.

Content warning for Near Character Death, serious illness, fever induced disorientation and lack of lucidity, and a character who gets glimpses of the future warning of danger/implied potential violence.

"Galadriel?"

For a moment, her name on Elrond's lips gives her hope- but the next words from him, as he struggles to sit up in the tangle of sweat-soaked sheets are "Does the King look for me?"

She shakes her head. "No. No, Elrond- it's alright, you cam rest. Lie back-"

"The King looks for me!" Elrond insists, throwing the sheets to the side, trying to get up. Galadriel grabs his shoulders to keep him from standing; he clutches, with surprising strength, at her forearms. "The King looks for me!" He insists, hissing through clenched teeth and staring with feverish eyes that seem, suddenly, deeper and more vast than the night sky. "The King in the woods, and the King beneath the mountain- they look for me, for all of us and the nine kings that would have been are to be drowned in flame and burned in water and- he will know. Celebrimbor- Celebrimbor must not be with him when he learns of it- he is going to be so angry, Galadriel and I- I...." he blinks, shuddering, and the energy all seems to drain out of him. He sinks. Galadriel smooths the curls back from his forehead, and her heart leaps to her mouth at how warm he is. "I have to go," he mutters. "I -I have to go to Elros. But the High King's speeches are yet to be written, I don't- " he blinks rapidly, his eyes desperately scanning her face until finally a spark of recognition seems to return. "Galadriel." he says, reaching and clutching at her skirt. "I haven't finished the speeches. But I need- Elros is calling-"

The tears come, then. She has tried- she has fought so hard not to give into despair, but this...

She takes his hand in her own, and kisses the back of it. "If you wish to go to Elros, dear one, you must go to him," she whispers. "Do not worry about the speeches. The King will not be angry-he is- he-" her voice hitches, breaks. "He is very proud of you," she says. "He told me so, and wished to tell you himself, but if you must go to Elros, now, it can wait. Go. We will miss you, but you will go with all our love."

She watches, in complete and utter terror, as his expression eases, his eyes close, his body goes slack, and his breathing....

His breathing...

Eases. It eases, it eases- she calls, for Adar and Celeborn both, to tell her she is not imagining it-

"He is cooler," Celeborn says; Adar concurrs-

Every hour, Elrond improves- and every moment of it, Galadriel clings to his hand. She is no healer. But she pictures the light of the Eldar within herself, and she imagines it passing from her palm to his, a loan of her strength to carry him through...

As dusk approaches, there is a flurry of birds chirping. Elrond Peredhel wrinkles his nose and, without opening his eyes, grumbles with rasping irritation: "Why is my hair so wet?"

Galadriel does not stop laughing for a full five minutes.

While the World's Slowest Slowburn makes the most logical sense, between Kiran and Alfonse. In my heart. Moe manages to find a way to get in an overly handsy way too intimate WAY too soon I just got my ass ghosted or perhaps dumped situationship with Alfonse. Idk what "disho" or "dh" is but I fully agree on that I wish people would be more accepting of subtextual queerness. Like I get it, because part of the point is that people become more accepting and if it isn't outright stated then they can just ignore it, but like. If someone's queerness has 0 plot relevance, then I don't think it /should/ be outright stated.

I like how the McElroys did it for TAZ, where they just straight up stated "hey this character is trans, it's absolutely never gonna come up in the story so we just wanted to say it here so that it was known." Even though with having a twin that /could/ have been plot relevant. I guess that's harder to do for other media but ngl I would mind a book foreword saying "yeah that person's ace but it's not gonna come up so just wanted to say :)"

DH and Disho refer to a Particular Game Series that I didn't tag nor mention by name fully as not to spam the tags. lots of queer rep in there, none of it stated outright beyond mentioning that a female character had a girlfriend, or hinting at another wlw couple being a thing, a trans character being talked about being 'a different person than before' or how 'she'd been born into the wrong life, so she set about making it right' in relation to her transition and similar. it's handled really tastefully, in my opinion.

what TAZ did sounds really sweet, too! it's definitely a way to go about things, though as you said, not entirely possible for all media (I can't imagine watching a show and every time a new episode starts they have to put a THESE CHARACTERS ARE OF THESE IDENTITIES before the actual plot starts)

to be fair it's likely best different stories and different media do things differently. I personally like subtlety so if a sexuality or gender identity is only hinted at it's fine. (I do also like when it's brought up more directly once or twice without it being relevant to the plot. sure, your macho man warrior casually mentions how he had a male lover back in the day while your heroine bitches about soldier boys)

it also makes sense that within a more casual medium like a podcast or an improv show (I am looking at all the MC roleplay servers) it might be stated a lot more bluntly and in your face, and that's really cool! but it would feel off to have a disclaimer or a character making such declaration in a regular novel, or in a movie. there's a lot of space for nuance here.

Okay, see, the thing about your story ending on a negative/dystopian/'despite everything that's happened nothing has changed in society' note and doing so successfully? It needs to have been set up for that in the first place, and it needs to be done in an intentional manner.

I have nothing against works that reinforce how cruel/meaningless/pointless/etc. the world is -- I enjoy a fair few! -- but the works themselves need to be some sort of commentary about it; the plot might be demonstrative of the futility of everything, but the story never should. It should take that and build on it and use it to make a statement, underscore a point, etc. to its readers. Having everything carry on business-as-usual without acknowledging it, especially in a genre that's generally meant to conclude on optimistic, uplifting, and hopeful notes, comes off as callous and in direct opposition with the values it extols.

Plus, the story itself should never be futile because, then, well, it never mattered as a work and it makes no difference if you've read it or not. Which... that's just a badly written story lmao.

Ray's After Ending is so funny because for a good chunk of it, most of the RFA members are knocked out by V's sleeping gas (Saeran is immune, Saeyoung isn't present bc he was kidnapped by his agency under his father's orders and MC wakes up in like an hour) but the game has a call feature where you can call the characters and it would be a waste if you couldn't use it bc the characters were unavailable so instead they have other people pick up the call (Jumin's driver picks up Jumin's phone, Jumin's father picks up Zen's phone, Yoosung's friends and mom pick up Yoosung's phone and Jaehee's coworkers pick up Jaehee's phone) and we do get to learn about the characters from outsider's point of view but it's so funny to me that these people are visiting their loved ones and suddenly the phone rings and they decide to just. answer it. and start talking to this stranger they've never met
