my thoughts on godzilla minus one

tl;dr i had a religious experience (positive) and it may be my new favorite godzilla movie

i'm going to try to organize my thoughts lmao i have never done a film analysis or review

story

i went in knowing next to nothing, so i was very afraid this was going to be heavy on the imperialist propaganda and reminiscing on the "good old days" of the japanese military

however i was pleasantly surprised to see that it was quite anti-government :]

loved the delivery of the themes of "all lives being precious" and "living on for yourself as well as for the sake of others" – not hammy or blunt!

FORESHADOWING OF THE EJECTION SEAT? chef's KISS we love picking up what the movie is putting down and getting to see the payoff

speaking of foreshadowing:

i spent like the last quarter of the movie with a headache because i was clenching my teeth and holding in tears after noriko's death ("death") AND koichi planning to blow himself up and orphan akiko

and all the ex-navy guys rallying together to defeat godzilla

i am not immune to classic story beats

semi-related i thought noriko would be covered in radiation burns, but then i realized a depiction of that would probably be insensitive

also the guys measuring radiation in plastic costs? come on now i know we weren't fully educated in the risks of radiation but there must've been some sort of better ppe

characters

i enjoyed like every character which is rare for me in a godzilla film

koichi just can't catch a break. this man gained so much trauma in a short amount of time, like he doesn't have ptsd because the trauma is ONGOING. i think he's my favorite and it's very easy to root for him

his introduction is of him as a shaky baby-faced pilot and then you find out he was supposed to be a kamikaze pilot like goddamn

i liked noriko's assertiveness ("hey i'm staying in your house now :)") and her ability to see kindness in koichi and sumiko

her struggle of wanting to become independent is very relatable. you could see the bittersweetness in her eyes showing that she felt guilty yet grateful for koichi's support........

i was surprised how quickly sumiko agreed to taking care of akiko? but it makes sense since she was (is) a mother and could not bear to see another child suffer, and akiko gave her life a new purpose

i would've liked more focus on the female characters and i don't think it's fair to just blame it on the era :playdead:

i really liked the chemistry between dr. noda, captain akitsu, and mizushima

dr. noda in particular felt like a nice foil/parallel to serizawa from the 1954 movie; he's also a scientist but he's much more personable(?)/"human"

dr. serizawa was my favorite in 1954 but he was very anguished and set on making reparations by killing godzilla (and koichi could be a parallel to him in that regard)

noda focused on protecting the living, not avenging the dead

ough mizushima. being a Youth who feels useless sure hits home

i'd say tachibana is my least favorite just by comparison to everyone else, but he's honestly so valid for his whole deal

visuals and sound

very elegant color grading, costuming, and set design!

great use of godzilla as a war allegory

i saw the movie in d-box so the shotgun-blast of heat ray was intense

also coolest godzilla death. sick decapitation

the plan to imprison him in bubbles and give him the bends felt a bit silly in the moment but highlighted how desperate everyone was for ANYTHING to work

really liked how godzilla was more like an animal or unstoppable force of nature without a clear motive

i mean the only emotion you could ascribe is probably RAGE

Seen an alarming number of people on my dash passing around a post insisting that Biden is just as bad as Trump, and listing some bad shit that has happened under Biden as proof of this, all framed as a "this is WHITE PEOPLE'S FAULT and just because you have white privilege and aren't being targeted by these things doesn't mean Biden isn't EVIL" and...

And these posts are being shared by people I have seen, recently, also sharing posts about how you need to watch out for psy-ops and propaganda, and you need to remember just HOW MUCH WORSE Trump is, and how anyone who can needs to vote for Democrats to prevent the US from becoming a literal overt christofascist dictatorship.

And it looks like the moment they saw a post that said "you only think that because you're white," their guilt over having privilege caused them to crumble.

I can't believe I'm having to write this. I can't believe the people I follow don't already know this, aren't already on the lookout for this. I can't believe there's a very serious chance that these campaigns will work and too many young people won't vote because "Biden is bad too" and the entire world will have to suffer under the christofascist dictatorship the Republicans are overtly, not secretly, but openly promising to institute under Trump.

Biden sucks in a lot of ways. He's done things he shouldn't which should make you angry. He's not done things he should have which should also make you angry. There are some things people think he should do which he doesn't actually have the power to do (which is why you vote the whole ballot, not just the president). He has also done a lot of really good things that people aren't talking about as much because anger and outrage get more clicks. (No, I am not going to list them here because I'm just one poor queer trans disabled guy who is mustering up the last of his energy to post this today, but I've shared lists of good stuff he's done before, and I will again whenever they pop up.)

Trump wants to burn down the world and start armageddon in the name of the evangelical christian religion. He wants everyone like me to die. He wants every queer person to die. He wants every disabled person to die. He wants every brown and black person to die. He wants to write Israel a blank check to nuke every last Palestinian. He wants to flood the air with deadly chemicals. He wants to get rid of no-fault divorce to trap people in abusive marriages. He wants to get rid of birth control and turn every person with a uterus into a baby producing factory. He wants to start fresh wars with everyone on earth. He wants to suck Putin's dick. He wants to burn down the rainforests. He has a rabid group of fascists, many of whom are fucking cops and military, chomping at the bit to make things so much worse than you could possibly imagine.

Things are bad. Things are bad right now. If you do not vote for Biden, you are saying you're fine with things getting unfathomably worse for the entire planet.

If you think it is more important to do nothing wrong than to do something right, if you think it is better to keep your soul~ pure by never voting for someone imperfect than to vote however you have to to stop far greater evils from taking power, then fuck you.

YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO PROPAGANDA. The propaganda will not come in the form of a MAGA red hat wearing skinhead trying to persuade you to join him. It will come in the form of a post that says "actually I'm OPPRESSED by the democrats and if you vote for them you are RACIST." It will come in the form of someone pretending to be on your side who is framing voting as somehow not woke enough. It will come in the form of someone who pretends to be just like you telling you that there's no point in voting, so just stay home.

They are putting SO MUCH EFFORT into trying to persuade young people not to vote, because voting MATTERS. But if you don't vote, and the Republicans win, then you might never get the chance to vote again.

Both parties are not the same. FUCKING. VOTE. Because if you can vote democrat, and you don't, and the republicans win, the horrors that will be unleashed as a result will be on your conscience for the rest of your life.

False Ukraine Narratives: Sleepwalking Us Toward a Great Power War?

I was invited by Massachusetts Peace Action to discuss the narratives used by the US and NATO to pursue a long war in Ukraine. I am very grateful to Massachusetts Peace Action for their initiatives to end the war, as the call for diplomacy has sadly been demonised as “controversial” or even treasonous over the past years.

A key false narrative has been that Russia’s invasion was unprovoked, a lie that largely went unchallenged as any dissent could be portrayed as an effort to “legitimise” or even support the invasion. Once the premise of an unprovoked invasion was established, any diplomacy and negotiations could be presented as “rewarding Putin” and the only solution was a military victory. The obligatory Hitler analogy also meant that negotiations are appeasement and peace requires victory on the battlefield. The injustice and suffering of Ukrainians was weaponised as “helping Ukraine” is consistently translated into further fuelling the war and rejecting diplomacy. Much like in Afghanistan, the war enthusiasm was maintained by the media which presented NATO’s motivations as altruistic and reassured the public that Ukraine was winning. The narratives required for a long war became immune to facts, and the NATO Secretary General announced that weapons are the path to peace.

The war started with the NATO-backed coup in 2014. When Western governments toppled the government in Kiev in 2014 to pull the country into NATO’s orbit, it was known that only 20% of Ukrainians desired NATO membership and NATO knew it would likely trigger a war. CIA Director William Burns had warned already in 2008 that attempting to pull Ukraine into NATO would trigger a civil war and a Russian invasion, while also recognising this is something the Russians would not want to do.

The Minsk Peace Agreement of 2015 was supposed to end the war, yet the Germans, French and Ukrainians later admitted it was merely intended to buy time to arm Ukraine. Zelensky was elected with a landslide victory in 2019 based on a peace platform, yet he was pressured by American-financed “NGOs” and US-backed fascist groups to reverse his position. The peace platform was abandoned, while diplomacy with Donbas and implementing the Minsk agreement were portrayed as “capitulation”. When Russia demanded security guarantees in 2021 as Ukraine was becoming a de facto NATO member, the US and NATO refused to offer anything of value. Kurt Volker, the former US ambassador to NATO and US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations, even argued in favour of no agreements as he wrote that “success is confrontation”.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 to impose a political settlement, and contacted Zelensky on the first day to start the negotiations. The US responded by sabotaging the peace negotiations in Istanbul, and Zelensky also confirmed the US preferred a long war to weaken Russia even if this meant the destruction of Ukraine. As recognised by the Israeli and Turkish mediators, and other leading officials from NATO countries – the US saw an opportunity to weaken its strategic rival by fighting with Ukrainians.

If propaganda fuels wars, then the truth can end wars. The media that lied about every important aspect of the war and the politicians who refused to even sit down with Russia as hundreds of thousands died have no moral credibility or right to lecture those who call for diplomacy.

it's abt the countries of amestris and xerxes. It seems to be based on nazi propaganda, and I know how that sounds, but like.. blonde white people in a country that's obv Persia that had ancient occult knowledge? that's literally the ahnenerbe's whole shtick, so I hope you see where I'm coming from w this one

I tried finding answers online, but none were satisfactory. Some ppl noticed what I did, and didn't rly seem to care. Others wrote it off as a consequence of coming up with the plot as it went along, but I don't think this makes sense as irl amestris was the wife of persian king xerxes I

plus all the persian imagery and clothing and architecture associated with xerxes in fma, and I rly doubt there'd be that many references without at least knowing abt the plots and myths the nazis conceived to dehumanize ppl

Unfortunately I don't think that's a question that can easily be answered in one post, let alone by a (mostly) white gentile like me. I do know that Amestris was originally based off England during the Industrial Revolution (Arakawa says this in the first guidebook), but that doesn't really answer anything about Xerxes, huh... Though, it is true that the Middle East is the birthplace of alchemy, so that may be part of why Xerxes is Persian inspired. Maybe? I dunno. It is obnoxious at best that they're all pale and blond though.

At the very least I don't think FMA would be like, intentionally pro-nazi given the whole plot of "military dictatorships and ethnic genocide are bad", but still, that doesn't mean it's immune to flaws and propaganda, whether intentional or not. If there's something that makes you uncomfortable, that's absolutely a discussion worth having. But I'm sorry to say I don't think there's a lot of solid information I can provide in that regard, and I don't think there's one right or wrong answer to this sort of thing. Good luck and I'm sorry that this is like... A thing that needs to be discussed at all, sigh.

I will say this though: If you're sensitive to nazi stuff, just... Just don't watch the 2003 anime tbh. It's a whole mess and a half. But it wasn't written by Arakawa, so it doesn't really have any bearing on what's going on in Brotherhood, at least.
