You're right, Iguro is most definitely an upgrade, but the bar is Very Low. I like to think that the sparring buddies (sabito, mitsuri, rengoku and uzui) had a drunken trauma dump session where Mitsuri's ex became hashira enemy #1.

Sabito doesn't get along great with Iguro due to a clash in key principles: he thinks everyone deserves respect for being a slayer, whereas Iguro thinks the weak are pathetic. Sabito sees Iguro's treatment of the other slayers and dislikes him for it. Iguro knows Sabito doesn't like him and dislikes him back for it. They're professional in front of the master though.

While Rengoku agrees with Sabito, he doesn't dislike Iguro. He is an official Obamitsu shipper: he sees how happy Mitsuri is with him and how uncharacteristically soft Iguro is.

Sabito wants her to be happy and Iguro treats her well, but he knows she deserves the world and Iguro's just Ken possibly his least favourite hashira, so he's unimpressed. He tries to hide it to not make her upset though, since it really is none of his business.

When she talks (obliviously pining) about him, Mitsuri doesn't notice Sabito's uncharacteristic lack of enthusiasm, but Uzui does. He brought it up casually at home once and it became the equivalent of a reality TV show for their household. His wives find the dynamic very interesting and demand updates regularly (as if he wasn't going to be nosy anyway). Hinatsuru is a romantic and thinks Iguro's secret soft side is adorable. Iguro passed Suma and Makio in the butterfly mansion and glared at Suma for being loud, so they both firmly agree with Sabito. Mitsuri deserves someone good to everyone, like her, they think. Uzui carefully remains Unopinionated.

Sabito passes by Mitsuri and Obanai on a picnic once. Mitsuri doesn't notice them and Obanai and Sabito have a sort of state off. Obanai is too happy to glare properly, which takes Sabito aback. This whole thing embarrassed Obanai but he didn't try to hide, earning him just a smidgeon of Sabito's respect. Baby steps.

For the character ask (sorry if you have already done it): Douma, Giyū.

Haven’t done it yet! And it will take shorter than the ficlet requests so I’m prioritizing this for the moment.

Character ask: Douma

OTP for him: Douma/Kotoha before it all went to hell. He may have only seen her as a pet at first but she was most likely the closest to actually getting him to feel properly. I will go down with this ship!

BROTP for him: I really like his dynamics with Kokushibou where they both respect each other to the point where Douma doesn’t get touchy with him while Koku doesn’t insult him like Akaza does, but still have enough casual energy for Douma to feel pouty when Koku ghosts them all.

Other ships: I’m not a fan of Douma/Shinobu, though I can see where their shippers are coming from and if it’s done well, I can still kind of enjoy them. I like Douma/Akaza way more. I have even more ships but most of them are crack, crossover or both.

What kind of fic I’d write about him: I actually don’t know. I write all kinds of fics for all kinds of characters but I don’t have a specific character-genre set usually. Whatever I’d feel inspired to.

A favourite canon moment: Well... That’s a hard one. I have literally all his scenes cut out and saved so that about tells you how much I enjoy him. His smiles are incredibly beautiful, I like the casual half-hug he gives Akaza, really just wanted to pat his head every time he cried, the genuinely sweet expression he sported around Kotoha is also up there, the pride he takes in his ice dolls, that dorky face when apologizing for sucking at detective work, how eagerly he offers up his eyes to Muzan, how he picks up Daki and Gyutaro... And then we have this pose that’s just perfect too!

Colour that reminds me of him: Combination of red and black. And rainbows.

Song that reminds me of him: Not sure. Either Ready to Die by Andrew W. K. or Butterfly by Smile (he just gives me those Tyki MIkk vibes)

A headcanon about him: One I haven’t shared yet since I would just be repeating myself otherwise. Don’t ask him to do any housework. He will try his best but he’s a total disaster when it comes to this. If you want your house to survive, don’t ask him for help.

Random AU I think up on the spot for him: Ever heard of Brave10? Swap him with Isanami. If you don’t know how that would go: A baby is found at the doorstep of a temple, darkness swarming around them. The headpriest takes them in and thus, little Douma gets to grow up as a shrine servant, possibly a young priest. Soon enough, the other priests notice when he’s sad, people start disappearing without a trace and darkness surrounds the temple. In order to prevent this, they give Douma the duty of keeping the temple a happy place, indirectly pushing him to push down any negative feelings he might have for the sake of fulfilling his place correctly. They give him a hairpiece they say harbors dark energy. By being always happy, he can keep it contained. Little does he know he’s actually the embodiment of the god of darkness and destruction and the hairpiece protects him much more than he protects the hairpiece...

Anything else: Yeah, I really just want to see him around Isanami. The two are so similar it’s scary in so many ways... And I wanna see them share their talents with the fans, Douma teaching her some attack techniques so she doesn’t feel useless and Isanami teaching him the ritual dances.

Character ask: Giyuu Tomioka

OTP for him: I don’t really ship that much in KNY I just realized but either the classic Sabito/Giyuu or, if I dare to step into the more cracky territory, Muzan/Giyuu. Don’t ask me how does it work, it doesn’t. It’s just a cracky AU with overall cracky premise. It somehow works in there, though it still has a lot of issues.

BROTP for him: Sabito. All the way. Possibly Tanjiro but not that much.

Other ships: Like I said, I don’t ship all that much in this series. I don’t like him shipped with Shinobu or Sanemi tho, but that’s probably mostly because I don’t like the two of them.

What kind of fic I’d write about him: You know how I said I don’t usually pair up a character with a genre? Well, Giyuu is one of the exceptions. And boy, am I cruel to him. He’s a character connected to so much angst already and I just keep adding on that... I have one crack AU for him but even that one sometimes gets a little hurt by the overflowing floods of angst I pour in for him.

A favourite canon moment: Again, hard to pick. I just like his presence, he’s a nice character but I don’t think there’s a special moment I’d like more than the others. Maybe that one part where he stops Iguro from completely crushing Tanjiro’s chest?

Colour that reminds me of him: Blue (surprisingly)

Song that reminds me of him: I don’t think I have one. I don’t really think about him enough to associate songs to him I guess? Though if I had to pick, I guess Lotus Pain? Yeah, I associate KNY with DGM a lot.

A headcanon about him: Following up with the housework theme, Giyuu is one guy you want to keep around. He does everything and perfectly. Sure, his cooking lacks a bit of warmth but it’s still delicious.

Random AU I think up on the spot for him: Thinking on a spot, AU where he and Sabito defeated the hand demon together and became pillars together and generally just stick together and it’s sweet.Other than that, I also have the dad!Giyuu AU where he adopts Tanjiro and Nezuko and all the other kids they end up bringing to the family (yes, this is where Muzan/Giyuu comes from too).

Anything else: Giyuu really used to give me big Kanda Yuu vibes and I was almost getting worried we’d just get DGM 2.0 with him around. I never really liked Kanda but I was neutral about Giyuu for the most part. He proved to be his own character, luckily, rather than a rip-off and his awkwardness is what really made me like him a lot. There’s probably not another Hashira I like more – though both Rengoku and Uzui are really high on the list as well so who knows for sure?

Your the only mutual who’s seen demon slayer so I apologize if my ranting and raving is a little overwelming 🥺👉🏻👈🏻

So I’m finally getting around to Demon Slayer —mostly in part because I was waiting for the hype to die down but also because I was waiting for a streaming service that I had to grab it — and after binging 13 episodes, I can safely say that my favorite characters are The Demon Doctor Lady, The cute dude madly in love with her, Tarzan Pig Head who’s a little confused but he’s got the spirit, and Nezuko, because she gets all of the UwU’s

Crybaby Tanjiro is a decent main character but his inner monologue sometimes gets a little grading to listen to but he’s big of heart, dumb of ass sometimes so I’ll let it slide. Also he’s a big brother who absolutely adores his baby sister, so he gets brownie points for good, non problematic familial sibling love.

However, Zenitsu can literally walk off a cliff for all that I care. He’s like Sanji from One Peice but instead of being so annoying that he’s funny, Zenitsu is just annoying (also I’m very sorry if Zenitsu is your favorite but like, the screaming... the screaming...) and like, I get that being a wuss and screaming all the time is his character flaw and his arc is to become more brave as he gets confident in his demon slayer abilities, but like... can he not be so annoying about it please...?

Also Demon daddy Michael Jackson is pretty cool.

Another thing that kinda grinds my gears about this anime is the pacing. I feel like a lot of these demon fights and training montages can absolutely be cut down form three episodes each to like one and a half... maybe two at the most. I don’t know if you had the same problem, but to me it defiantly feels dragged out for the sake of getting the story to the 26 episode mark.

Hopefully the pacing gets better during the rest of the anime, but I’m not holding out hope. Time will tell I guess. And hopefully Zenitsu will learn that the power of silence can be a blessing.

But overall I am getting a positive feeling out of Demon Slayer. It’s not terrible by no means (trust me I’ve far worse) but it’s defiantly not the show-stopper that most people back during Demon Slayers time in the sun were screaming about. I personally, as of episode 13, give it a solid B-

I can definitely understand not wanting to get into a series that has a lot of hype, I kinda felt like that with BNHA in the beginning (I still need to catch up but I literally just look forward to Dabi lol)

Ahhh all those characters are so good! Lady Tamayo and Yushiro (I hope I'm right) I love them too. I love the scene where he calls Nezuko unattractive, literally his energy was funny.

Inosuke is fun! I enjoy him too. At first I thought I'd be annoyed with him but he proved me wrong. And Nezuko!!! I don't think there is anyone who truly hates her, I just want to hug her!

As for Tanjiro, I totally get being a bit iffy with him. I still enjoy his character but main characters are almost never my favorite characters in anime/manga because of how predictable they are (My faves are all side characters where anything is possible. And I really like the Hashira those character designs!!!). However, as you said, his big brother love for Nezuko is wonderful (I really like that this series has two siblings as the MC's and we see how far each would go to protect the other. We rarely see loving sibling bonds unless they'rerivals or they have grudges against each other) I also like that he's a sensitive MC. I've seen a lot of shounen anime and I like that Tanjiro isn't a Goku or Naruto (loud, obnoxious, the whole shebang). I feel like BnHA was my first experience of a sensitive MC in shounen.

No offense here about Zenitsu. It's funny I said I don't really like the loud characters but Zenitsu is the loudest one of Demon Slayer lol. I feel like comic-relief characters walk on the slippery slope of annoying af or well received. I noticed a lot of people want to see more of him fighting (because they can't stand awake Zenitsu lol) and I definitely want to see more badass, confident Zenitsu too!

OMG "Demon daddy Michael Jackson" I'm dying!!! We need to see more of him, especially being threatening.

As for the pacing (Right now I'm going by memory) I'm pretty sure the training sequences are dragged out. Usually I skip around if I'm bored, which I think I did or get distracted while it's happening. I wanna say the only training that I could see being dragged out, while making sense is the training Tanjiro did with Sabito and Makomo. One of these characters gets brought up again later (maybe the important detail was said but if you look carefully two characters have a similar haori). I'd also say it helps us to be attached to them since we later find out what happened to them. The old man (I forgot his name) meh if it went more than 1.5 eps I totally forgot because I can lose interest in training arcs lol.

I will say in future seasons (because I read the manga) some fights feel dragged out and there might be an arc that drags out but I honestly see it being at most 2 eps (the first being quick and comedic the second being more serious)

I feel like this 2nd season will be paced better because they (what I assume from the trailer) are animating one arc, "Red Light District" and I cannot wait because

1) The music I picture going alongside the calm, action and scenic moments. The trailer had a banger!

2) The fights. Something super cool happens

3) The comedy

4) ...Uzui with his hair down/messed up.... I always find a husbando in a series and it became him. (there's a joke I wanna make but after it's released)

Honestly, same. When you break it down "Demon Slayer" is your typical shounen anime that follows a lot of the tropes necessary for a series featured in big magazines like "Shounen Jump." But where it does separate itself from protagonists and characters such as "Naruto", "Bleach", "Dragon Ball", "Bkack Clover" etc, it does really well.

I wanna say this series has by far the most eyecatching character designs which is great because I can remember them a lot faster.

And I love their "breath technique" effects. Besides the first episode reeling me in, the effects kept me in (as well as characters). It's a visually appealing anime and the animation team did a wonderful job bringing these characters and this story alive.

I also like that the series takes place during an evolving/modernizing Japan, some places are modern for that time period/influenced time period (1900-20's fashion, trains!?!? I legit face-palmed at the end of season 1 because I forgot that this series wasn't taking place in medieval-ish era) Sometimes I forget that Demon daddy and Tanjiro live in the same time period because of how different their worlds are. (I'm very use to shounen being either just european medieval fantasy world, just medieval/edo fantasy Japan or in the rare case modern fantasy Japan. A mix of both if it's like Bleach but the difference was extreme and literally different worlds) In Demon Slayer, it was a work in progress, a set up perhaps. But I mean, countrysides still exists in more developed countries today but in most anime it was either or. Pre-modern or Present day modern.

And the character backstories are pretty intense. I wanna reread the series again to give a better review. But yeah, prepare to cry some things did catch me off guard and oh geez, I will be crying when certain chapters get animated.

I 100% agree with you on the rating a B- or ⭐⭐⭐⭐ is fair for "Demon Slayer"

For me to give an A+ or 5 stars, the series would have to really surprise me, main character wise (I've read so much that I can predict what will happen, kinda like my mom and horror movies)

Berserk is the closest to a 5 star but that's a Seinen series that goes by different rules and has a lot of dark and really messed up things (big big trigger warning) happen but when that big surprise came it literally took me by surprise the 2016-17 anime was a disgrace and don't get me started on that lol) and of course even then I would still critique it lol

Is there demon slayer fate reverse AU where the younger siblings get the oldest sibling's fate, and older siblings get younger sibling's fate.

For example: Instead of Tsutako died, Giyuu died and when she tried to tell the village, they thought she was mad. When someone try to send her to mental hospital, she run away and then meet Urokudaki & Sabito.

Tsutako is still the oldest siblings, it just the fate reverse.

This sounds like a really fun concept!! Demon slayer has so many siblings (which is part of why I love it) so you could change quite a lot with this.

I am personally really interested in how the butterfly sisters would work. Let's ignore Kanao for a second (sorry I love you I promise) and just flip Shinobu and Kanae. Instead of Kanae facing Douma and dying, Shinobu does instead. Similarly, Kanae would face Douma in the infinity castle arc, but how this fight would go down is interesting.

It's very clear that success in canon is due to Shinobu's plan as opposed to sword skills in the fight, so I wonder how Kanae would defeat Douma. Would she also turn to poisons, perhaps with Tamayo's help? I doubt she would replicate Shinobu's plan herself, though, so that doesn't seem like enough of an explanation.

I'm also not sure how to incorporate Kanao. As the ages have not been swapped, it doesn't make sense to me for Kanao to rescue Shinobu and Kanae instead. Hmmmm...

With the Tomioka siblings, I think Tsutako would be really interesting as a demon slayer! In my hashira surplus au, where both siblings live, I like to characterise her as someone who tolerates that Giyu wants to be a slayer but wishes he chose something safer/normal because that's what's safe and also what she wants. So I wonder how she would process Giyu's death (and her failure to save him). She runs away to avoid being put in a mental hopsital but maybe her fiance follows her. Maybe he believes her, but it's not enough. Would she be unable to accept a normal life in the fall out? Would the wounds be too fresh to get married, and she freaks out and runs again at the last moment? Is that how Urokodaki finds her later, a teenager sobbing in some corner in the woods?

As time passes, I think she would gradually heal and be conflicted. She wants a simple life and it would be so easy for her to leave, but she also feels a sense of duty. Through her training and experiences in the field, I think she realises that the demons are everywhere and she can't hide from them. Her normal life is unachievable now because even though her fiance is still out there, her brother is not and she can never go back to the ignorant bliss of being unaware of demons. Like canon!Shinobu, I think she works hard but carries a bitterness.

I also wonder what the pillar ranks would look like!

Does Senjuro take Rengoku's place, swapping the fate of who is blessed with talent? How does that impact Rengoku, as a failure of an older son, unable to protect his brother? How does that impact their father, who (while a terrible person who does not deserve forgiveness) has fallen the way he has because he loves his family and cannot bear for them to die?

Did Genya kill their mother and vanish to the corps? Does he still seek Sanemi out to apologise (perhaps for killing their mother? perhaps for abandoning him?) but is he limited by pillar duties?

Do the swaps not affect the ranks in the first place? Perhaps the only role swaps are the deaths - in which case, what happens in the Mugen train arc?
