SLEEPOVER SATURDAY. what instrument would you play if you hadn't learned oboe. i wish i learned bassoon as a kid, youth orchestra would've been a lot easier for me if i had. i'm also picking up electric bass again but that's not really that difficult because at the of the day strings are strings yknow

so at my middle school we were required to pick and instrument to play in band (or strings) when we entered 5th grade, so my actual backup options were french horn or percussion (and i chose percussion purely because it was a cheat code to play More instruments). i sort of wanted one of my backups instead of oboe because someone had told me how delicate/easy to damage an oboe could be and it made me nervous. but i was the only kid in the grade who even remotely expressed interest in it, and really i had been hooked on oboe as My Instrument from the first time i heard it demo'd to us in music class. that was going to be my beast it was fated

although in theory i could have gotten away with not picking a band instrument at all but rather joining strings as a violin player because (sasha lore reveal) at that time i was actually in violin lessons. i was a violin player before i was an oboist. but i only played for like two years, i quit pretty quickly after i started oboe. too much to practice all at once. whether you consider that dodging a bullet or the opposite is a matter of perspective

okay so, my answer is not gonna be much BUT !! basically;

piano : i'm rusty with the piano because i have stopped playing it since 2016 and am just trying to get back to it BUT !! I used to play a LOT of nursery rhymes and classical music . i remember playing a whole song for my elementary school when I was in 4th? 5th? grade !! anyway, haven't really practiced much because my piano is currently at my lola's house and I dont like practicing using my phone because its too small. i need PAPERS with the music notes on it. i love reading music notes. but yeah, basically, i play classical music and old nursery rhymes on the piano. used to anyway. im getting back tho

Guitar (acoustic) : I play a lot of alex g music with my acoustic :33 i did learn how to play la vie en rose on it but i didnt touch it for 4 days after practicing it and forgot everything (my memory is really bad im so sorry) . i also play some midwestern emo with it whenever i learn how to. most of the times i just play songs with those easy ass beginner chords because my guitar is RUSSSTYYY LIKE can u believe it became rusty after changing the strings AFTER 3 DAYS??1?1? MY HAND DOESNT EVEN SWEAT !!1!

Guitar (electric) : ROCK MUSIC! i mean, i literally just play anything that makes my fingers bleed (i make my own chord progression sometimes). Most of the time though, i just play Nirvana, Radiohead, uhhh Hysteria by Muse because i find it quite easy... in theory, and actually a lot more (i can play the hotel california riff but god it sounds horrible without the amp edits). But yeah since I don't have an ACTUAL amplifier (i use my speaker... im so sorry guitar i love u but im desperate for music), I tend to stop practicing because it doesn't turn out as good as I expect it to be. There's only a little distortion on my speaker ugh. Anyway, I also just use my e.guitar for practice (unplugged) so I still play alex g on it (can u tell i love alex g already). anyway. im actually kinda rusty with it since hearing the bad sound outcome kinda makes me sad so i practice only for a little bit.

violin : WELLLL ..... I'M ACTUALLY A BEGINNER!1!!1 I don't play it as often as I play my guitar but I can make it sing aka i can make the strings make sounds. uhhh its because i only had like 4? 6? classes of it because when i started to learn it, school was nearing so i didn't really have much time on trying to study it normally. I do practice and self+teach myself but i lost my music book </33 im still trying to find it though!! its gotta be in my cabinet... BUT I PLAN TO PLAY CLASSICAL MUSIC ON IT!!! its basically the same as the piano!!

im gonna try to actually practice all of it again though! its just been kinda hard for me. maybe ill just print out music sheets to practice piano and violin and maybe print out tabs and chords for my guitars as well. [what's my favorite instrument] Mysterious how am I supposed to answer this :( I play clarinet. I have an oboe that I'm trying to learn this summer, but I haven't been doing that a lot lol.

I have a list of instruments I want/want to learn. I used to play violin but I don't anymore bc we returned the violin and I would like to pick it up again. I'd also like to learn viola because it looks cool but apparently they have an entire different fucking clef?? called an alto clef??? like wtf why would they do that to me

I'd also like to learn saxophone. Either soprano, alto, or tenor, idrc. But it's a cool instrument. Id also like to play bass clarinet because it is literally the same as normal clarinet just Big. it's in the treble clef and everything. It's just Big clarinet. I would love to learn guitar. it seems like such an important piece for like background music on tracks and just. I wanna learn it. and its the most common thing that people use for chords. I have a piano that I fuck around with, but I don't know how to use chords and shit but I know how to play the shit out of the melody.

I also need to learn to read the bass clef. I played flute in 4th grade and I'd kind of like to play it again

[what color is my room painted, and what would I like to change it to] okay. so. like AGES ago we were gonna paint my room. and we painted two walls. we got light blue on the east and marshmallow white on the west. the other walls (North and south) are painted VERY VERY light pink so light it is white. since that's the color my sister had. we were gonna paint the other window wall (north) blue and the non-window wall white (south) but it never happened. so now I have mismatched walls.

The blue is rly nice, but if I moved, I think I'd paint three walls light lavender, and one the marshmallow white.

so yeah I’m generally a really artsy person but not in the typical way like. I would really love to know how to draw and paint but I can’t do either of those things to save my life- but I’m really artsy in other ways!

like, I’ve been writing in every sense of the word since kindergarten. I wrote my first songs then, and I’ve been getting some of my poetry published since 4th grade. I have many notebooks just filled with my poetry!

I also wrote a lot of books! I’ve written around 5 full-length novels, and I absolutely love character creation and development! I’m currently working on a story called ‘found’, which is about five queer people who meet at the homeless shelter where they stay and become close and kind of like a found family unit!

I’m also big into video editing! I create video edits, funny videos, and at my internship at my high school I make accompaniment videos that play along with pieces at the school’s concerts!

and speaking of music, I’ve always been huge into it! Like I said, I’ve been writing songs since I was 6, which is also when I started playing piano! I picked up violin in 4th grade so I’ve been playing it for around 10 years, and I picked up the viola and the cello to play for my school orchestra because we didn’t have enough of those players!

I also play ukulele and guitar, though they’re not my main instruments. But I’d have to say that, even though I love piano and violin the most, the most fun instrument that I play is xylophone because it’s so unique and it’s just really cool!!

I also compose music now too! I mainly write musical score accompaniments for my own songs that I wrote, but I’ve also done a few arrangements for other songs- I actually composed a three-part duet for ‘love is just a word’ by Jasmine Thompson and calum Scott and performed it at my school!

artsy stuff is truly my life and it’s how I express myself and it’s also how I coordinate my outfits too so it’s a big part of my gender presentation :333

Getting Back Into It

Hey everybody! I’m 20 years old, and I played the violin and viola in my schools orchestra from about 4th grade until my senior year, with a two year break (grades 9-10 because I was too shy) I’ve dabbled (very lightly) in guitar, bass, ukulele, and piano (keyboard really) as well. I have been trying to pick up playing again after stopping because of COVID. I really cannot afford lessons as I am a college student, but I’ve noticed that I am significantly worse due to not practicing. I find it hard to remember the different clefs and I never fully understood key signatures until my last two years, so that is kind of gone as well. When bowing, my tone is not of the best quality (especially on the a/e strings because they’re higher)

I remember some stuff, but I guess I’m basically asking for advice on how to get back into it while not frustrating myself.

More specifically: tone quality when bowing, sheet music reading, and key signatures

I also would love more resources on keyboard music, as I’d really love to play that in addition to rebuilding skills I used to know in violin/viola. I have smaller hands, so If you’re someone that also does, please drop any tips you have.

I eventually want to learn how to write my own music, but I feel like focusing on the basics is better in this moment. I also want to learn more about bass and guitar as well, but again it’s not the biggest priority.

i DO!! i play violin and ive done so since i was 8 years old, ive played in several ensembles and at some very fancy events. i know my way around a piano (though i wouldnt say i know how to play) and i can sing and took voice lessons for a while (mostly on a favour and with the assistance of a teacher who really thought i was going places with my voice and wanted to help). im trying to learn bass since its like a violin but the strings are 4ths instead of 5ths but jeez is it annoying to play on a tuned down guitar. and also i cant read tabs and will never learn. im glad they exist and make music accessible!! not for me tho yall be easy. i also did music theory! grade 4 in abrsm, it was pretty easy since id already been playing music for most of my life but i learnt new things! and it did help a lot. i occasionally write songs and i want to learn how to play steel pan but i need to pluck up the courage to ask my neighbour (who plays professionally) to either teach me or let me use his pans to learn.

Song Witchery (or Which witch am I?)

What is a Song Witch?

A witch who uses music/song in their craft. Crystal witches use crystals. Cosmic witches use planets. Kitchen witches use kitchen things. I use songs.

My grimoire has lists of songs instead of crystals or herbs. I sing my wards into place. I put together playlists prior to spellwork so I can play them during.

Why be a Song Witch?

Music is in my blood, soul, and heart. 

Music was the first religion I ‘claimed’. I grew up being made to go to church, but once the pastor started spewing homophobic rhetoric I stopped and I’ve never been to church since. I had always wanted to believe in something bigger than myself, but I never really believed in anything. And after separating myself from Christianity and the church, I became a hardcore atheist for a bit over a decade.

This changed in August of 2018 and I can remember it vividly. My wife and I went to a Panic! at the Disco concert. I’d always enjoyed that genre and especially P!atD, but it took on a more emotional meaning to me after one of my close friends committed suicide.

I can remember one time I was driving and my van was full of my noisy and boisterous friends. And I was getting extremely overwhelmed. He pulled up P!atD on his phone and held it up near my ear (my radio had previously been stolen) because he knew it would ground me. He also made sure that I had them on my phone/laptop/whatever listening device. 

He passed in the middle of the Death of a Bachelor pre-release hype, when they were releasing singles before the album had officially dropped. The eponymous song ‘Death of a Bachelor’ was released the same month. It was...a very emotional time for me. I sunk myself into that album when it came out the next month. One of the songs on that album is Hallelujah. The following lyrics are the ones that hit me the hardest. It gave me ‘permission’ to grieve. An outlet for my sorrow.

Then the time for being sad is over And you miss 'em like you miss no other And being blue is better than being over it (over it)

Back to that Panic! at the Disco concert. This was the Pray for the Wicked tour. We drove three hours to get there (despite my driving anxiety) and rented a room at a hotel and had a nice mini-vacation.

The energy in the venue was astounding (and this was before I was officially a witch or had realized that I’m an empath). I felt supremely connected to the world in a way I never had before. All these people there for the same reason. So much queer representation, people with their pride flags worn like capes, or clothing emblazoned with rainbows. It was beautiful. 

I sang along to every song. Loudly. Some parts were more like...collective screaming. My throat was so sore afterwards. But, the pivotal point...that most important moment.

When they started playing Hallelujah, I felt so moved. That feeling I never had in church. The one you can see on the faces of the people with their arms raised in praise. I was feeling it. I had my hands raised as if in worship and was singing as best as I could while tears streamed down my face. It was the closest I had ever felt to some sort of something larger than myself. From that point, I declared music to be my religion.

Recently, when I was searching for a label...something to grasp onto, to ground me, I came upon Song Witch. It’s perfect and it’s me.

How to be a Song Witch

Use music in your craft. It’s that simple. Not just as background noise, but really use it. Let the lyrics be your prayers or your chants or anything you need. Let the music provide the rhythm for anything you need. Put music into your magic. Make a ‘Power Glamour’ playlist to use when you put your make-up on. Or something to ‘Promote Prosperity’. Put some music together and pick up shufflemancy. Find the songs that put you in the right place/mood for meditation or casting or anything at all. Just use it.

of course it’s their debut song Crown. I have to admit, I listened to them not because i discovered them but because of the whole “bighit is releasing another boy group” fiasco. people thought the hype would die down, i did too, but to this day the boys never failed me. they consistently made me happy with the content they gave out for everyone to enjoy. also adding, i think i’m attracted to them more (compared to their seniors) since they’re around my age– something in which i feel like i can relate to (in terms of the content they put out, or the jokes, etc)

so in the city where i live, there are places in which the canals don’t have any stoppers. i saw this kid walking with his family alongside these canals and he was just vibing with the song he was singing to. he was so into the song he was singing that he missed a step and he kinda slipped and fell in to the canal (don’t worry though there weren’t any serious injuries) and i swear it was a funny sight

13. Dream vacation: I’ve wanted to go to Santorini, Greece for YEARS. It looks absolutely STUNNING. And also Ireland. I’d want to go all over. Beach sides, cliffs, the mountains, the plains (I’m from the plains here in the Midwest but Ireland’s look so much GREENER and more lush), take me all over. No Blarney Stone though, I will always skip that one...

15. Favorite food: I never get sick of pasta. Even just like the simplest of pasta. Homemade mashed potatoes are to die for (best part of thanksgiving). One food I’ll always miss is my great grandma’s Belgian waffles (Omfggggg, SO worth waking up super early for), and this Danish pastry, passed down from my other great grandma on my dad’s side called Kringle. Idk how to describe it, but my great aunt used to make it every time we visited and she would literally have to slap my dad’s and my hands away from the hot pans because we loved them so much 😂

16. Drink of choice: just water!! I have a 32oz Yeti and refill it multiple times a day. I also fell in love with chamomile tea recently, and for soda, Mr Pibb is obviously the best, followed by Dr Pepper

18. Instruments: I actually used to be pretty good at violin! But forced every day practice and waking up really early during grade school (like 4th-6th grade) killed my desire to play. I wish I had held out, it’s one of my favorite instruments ☹️

20. Random fact: i once owned 10 guinea pigs by accident........ so I got a guinea pig when I was 18, my mom got her a companion, it wasn’t a female like the humane society said. They ended up up having a litter of 3 and the humane society fixed the dad... but didn’t tell us about the necessary quarantine period. We ended up with a second litter of 5 before the first litter was fully grown. We ended up finding homes for them all (a lot of them went in pairs bc we took them all to an actual vet to have their gender checked and for some reason the majority were male)

Kaede’s twin: Akamatsu Shikimi Shikimi goes to Hope’s Peak Academy as a Reserve Course student. More easygoing but just as firm and assertive as her sister. Despite being mistaken as Kaede frequently in public, she doesn’t despise her twin, even going as far as pretending to her so Kaede can take a break from the limelight. Can play the piano (as well as guitar and violin) but only at a beginner level.

Rantaro’s 2/12 sisters: Amami Youko (2nd child), Amami Misaki (1st child, 3rd partner) Youko is Rantaro’s only full sibling. She attend’s Hope’s Pass High School, Rantaro’s old high school prior to being scouted. More mature than her older bro; has a no-nonsense attitude and quite studious. Easily annoyed by Rantaro’s childish antics but worries about him a lot whenever he travels. Misaki looks up to Rantaro a lot and strongly considers him a role model. She tags along with him frequently, except during his travels and is up to date with his vlogs. She is currently in 4th grade.

Shuichi’s Uncle: Saihara Yoshio Yoshio is the younger brother of Shuichi’s father. He takes in Shuichi after his brother and his wife move overseas, leaving their son to his care. He is a private investigator of a small detective firm, and takes Shuichi as his assistant. He lets Shuichi read confidential case files and would indulge him with a meal of donuts and hot chocolate on some afternoons.

Kaito’s grandparents: Momota Shou, Momota Asuka Shou and Asuka are the parents of Kaito’s father. Kaito was left to their care when his parents died in a tragic car accident. They have a tree house in their backyard where Kaito usually played as a child and Shou would often take Kaito to an open field to stargaze at night. They were quite traditional in their beliefs, and Kaito unconsciously absorbed some of their patriarchal views.

Maki’s favorite (in the orphanage): Shimizu Reika Reika is timid and shy, and mostly didn’t play with the other kids in the orphanage. She would often trail Maki whenever she had errands, and liked clinging to her. She aspires to be a “responsible big sister” like Maki to the other kids, doing her best to conquer her social anxieties. Maki initially disliked Reika’s clinginess, but eventually develops a soft spot for her (since she was mostly well-behaved anyway).

Korekiyo’s older sister: Shinguji Miyadera Miyadera is frail and sickly. Fearful of her short lifespan, she spoils her younger brother to no end. She would frequently visit Hope’s Peak to bring him food, random knick knacks or relics she manages to get a hold of. She would often message him to ask about his well-being, which sometimes irritate Kiyo but he lets his sister be. The siblings care for each other greatly (but not to the point that it becomes incestuous).

Kokichi’s organization D.I.C.E: names confidential A group of pranksters led by Kokichi. After being alienated from his family, he forms this ragtag group of outcasts to commit trivial crimes such as harmless pranks, vandalism and petty theft. They are basically a family unit to him.

Tenko’s Aikido master: Maeda Hikaru After the death of Tenko’s mother (at the hands of own father), Tenko was adopted by Hikaru, who is a good friend of her mother’s. Hikaru owns a dojo and trains Tenko with aikido. They invent a variation of aikido that they subsequently dubbed “Neo Aikido.” Hikaru has spent most of her life in a loveless rut, and she channels her bitterness with preaching to Tenko her biased views on men. Coupled with Tenko’s bad experience with her father, she develops a close-minded negative perception of men.

Kirumi’s mother: Tojo Kazumi Kazumi is a single mother, and doesn’t actually know who Kirumi’s father is. She had been completely drunk one night at a college party, and was too inebriated to notice she’d been having sex with a man. Her girlfriend subsequently left her while her family disowned her when she decided to keep the baby. She worked hard to be able to provide for Kirumi, taking up small part-time jobs apart from a day job during her early-twenties to her late-twenties. This inspired Kirumi to take a part time job when she was old enough. Currently, she works in a bookstore.

Angie’s late grandfather: Yonaga Arell Arell took care of Angie when her parents left the island to find jobs overseas and have not returned ever since. He teaches Angie obscure traditions of their island and the religion of Atua. An artist himself, he teaches Angie how to do visual art and sculpture, even teaching her how to apply incantations to her works of art. His eccentric way of speaking was picked up by Angie. Arell contracts a deadly disease when Angie was 9 years old, and unfortunately dies after 2 years.

Tsumugi’s little brother: Shirogane Takumi Despite sharing a lot of interests with her sister (video games and anime), Takumi teases his older sister a lot. He would also often bother Tsumugi when she is sewing a costume. Their parents are often too busy at work, and with his sister’s shut-in personality, Takumi feels lonely. He secretly admires his sister for her geeky attitude and talent for making beautiful cosplays. Tsumugi finds him annoying, but nevertheless pampers him when she has time. She would also try to dress him up, even in girl’s clothings and he doesn’t mind.

Himiko’s mother: Yumeno Chiyoko Chiyoko used to be a Magician’s assistant. Now, she works as a stage director while her husband works as a stuntman. She is very outgoing and bubbly. She would always recount how her day went during dinnertime with her family. During weekends, she likes taking Himiko out for a day at the park, or watch movies. Himiko is very close with her mother as she often brings her up in conversations, although she dreads being affectionate with her in public.

Keebo’s father: Iidabashi Manabu Prof. Iidabashi is a talented robotics engineer of Future Foundation. He fathered Keebo with one of his former subordinates, who left the organization after leaving him Keebo upon his birth. Not wanting to be an absentee father since his job eats up a lot of time, Manabu homeschools Keebo until he was enrolled to Hope’s Peak, bringing him along whenever he reported to his office. He is quite overprotective of his son and is very quick to defend him.

Miu’s estranged (real) father: Keane Bellerose Keane was a French tourist visiting Japan that had a brief affair with Miu’s mother. He lost contact with the mother after leaving Japan, and never knew he fathered a child. Being an illegitimate child, Miu’s stepfather mostly neglects her while her mother is mostly away from home. Keane eventually learns about his daughter and attempts to reconnect with her.

Ryoma’s family cat: Sunny A turkish calico, named after the same breed in the game Neko Atsume. Along with Ryoma, they are the only survivors of the massacre that claimed the lives of Ryoma’s parents, two siblings and an aunt.
