soo a little bit about the fanclans i use in my books ♡ im noting here that if anything seems off we're gonna blame the tumblr mobile ai ;; constantly warping to the end of the page, trying to delete paragraphs instead of just...select a few words tumblr p l e a s e relax
im also working on a visual map for these clans, but i havent the slightest idea of how to make maps so it's uh . . . it's a work in progress xx
Note: Organisms found in the territories are influenced by both European and North American wildlife and plants, so they are not limited to any specific region, though I've tried to keep it somewhat accurate.
☆ The Gorge
>> One of the five groups of cats that call themselves Clans. They chose their current name from whence they reside—in a cave system above a sheer gorge on the outskirts of Clan territory. Super original, right?
>> Past Name: MistClan
>> Current Leader: Deadeye
>> Past Known Leaders: Crowstar, Shadestar
>> Their training is unlike the other Clans. They are extremely strict with their apprentices, often not even allowing them to attend Gatherings or speak out of hand. Mistakes are met with serious consequences.
>> Camp: Located at the far south of their territory. On the cliffside, there are steep ledges leading down into a complicated cave system that serves as their camp. In the center of the main cave is the Smoothstone, which is a hollowed out, massive stone that serves simultaneously as the leader's perch and den.
>> Territory: The territory is notably rocky almost all over, though it's also consistently forested.
>> Landmarks: Boulderdrop (dangerous rocky outcrop to the east, often used for training). Twoleg nests beyond the eastern border.
>> Typical Physique/Traits: Considering the cats of the Gorge are cats from all the Clans and rogues—some stolen as kits, some the result of forbidden or hidden relationships, some taken in with the desire to be stronger—the builds of these cats are extremely varied, though their nighttime eyesight is incredibly enhanced due to their life inside the caves.
>> Prefix Conventions: As stated above, the Gorge turned into a kind of melting pot of cats from all Clans, and as a result they don't follow much of a pattern with naming conventions—especially considering they often change their names when they receive notable battle scars (Deadeye, Hawkscar). However, they occasionally take influence from plants and critters in their territory, especially cliff- and cave-dwelling flora and fauna such as Aster–, Lichen–, Eagle–, Falcon–, Bat–, Poppy–, Moss–, Spider–, or Ivy–
◇ SwiftClan
>> Current Leader: Fishstar
>> Past Known Leaders: Ivorystar
>> Camp: Between several of the hills, there's a large area where the gorse is especially thick, along with some divets in the hills that make up the dens. It lies in the heart of the territory.
>> Territory: Much more barren than most of the other Clans, though not quite as barren and uninhabitable as BlazeClan; it's a very marshy moorland. The wind hits hard, and the bogs stay nasty and cold most of the year. Many invaders and trespassers often end up stuck in the sticky bogs, and the cats of SwiftClan are known to only save them if they agree to leave the territory.
>> Landmarks: Fallen, partially rotted tree stuck in the bogs by the southern border with the Gorge.
>> Typical Physique/Traits: Cats from SwiftClan tend to be very lanky and long-legged as a result of their lives running along the moorland. In addition, their paws are said to be slightly webbed to help them navigate the marshes in their territory without getting stuck in the mud and bogs.
>> Prefix Conventions: Cats in SwiftClan are more accustomed to the boggy moorlands, and therefore tend to name their kits after plants and terms more applicable to their territory. Prefixes tend to follow themes like the following: Bog–, Marsh–, Swamp–, Mire–, Moss–, Juniper–, Owl–, Cypress–, Adder–, Snake–, Ash–, Elm–, Frog–, Sedge–, Cotton–, Plover–, Bracken–, and more!
♤ NightClan
>> Current Leader: Harestar
>> Camp: In the heart of the territory, there is a massive oak tree that shelters the camp. Their dens are among several uplifted roots, and several boulder piles that they've collected over time. Like BlazeClan, they've learned how to weave together plants, though they use more ferns along with brambles. Beneath the common mossy nest is a layer of pine needles, carefully layered for extra cushioning. The camp is protected like a fortress by thick, woven walls of brambles and bushes.
>> Territory: Very thickly forested area, both pine trees and oak trees. On the east, the river marks a small portion of their border with RushClan. In the west, near SwiftClan territory is an area where Twolegs often come camping. They often bring dogs that have gotten loose in the past.
>> Landmarks: Twoleg camping at the western border, near their southern border with SwiftClan
>> Typical Physique/Traits: Life in NightClan isn't nearly as demanding as the others, so their traits aren't usually so defined. It's not uncommon, however, for them to be notably large-pawed and long-furred, or for them to have plants stuck in their fur.
>> Prefix Conventions: The forest they live in is thick with trees and rich with all kinds of life. Almost anything you'd see in a thick forest could be found here, and their naming conventions often take many plants and animals into mind: Coral–, Bell–, Wren–, Warbler–, Thyme–, Deer–, Doe–, Fern–, Pine–, Skunk– Oak–, Holly–, Weasel–, Sorrel–, Dove–, Needle–, Clover–, Kestrel–, Thorn–, Newt–, Robin–, Mint–, and Thistle–.
♧ RushClan
>> Current Leader: Kinkstar
>> Camp: The camp lies on a strip of land over the river, and said river is often used as protection against invasions or attacks from other Clans. The leader's den is wedged underneath a series of sturdy sunning stones in the center of the camp; while most Clans consider their meetings and announcements to be formal, RushClan cats often relax on the sunning stones while their leader gives announcements from atop the highest one.
>> Territory: Not as thickly forested as NightClan, but still quite forested. A large river runs through the heart of their territory, leaving their bellies full on the many fish that thrive there.
>> Landmarks: On the western side of the river lies a large treebridge; on the eastern side, there are multiple stepping stones. Both landmarks serve as an escape route in the case of an emergency, though most cats know how to swim.
>> Typical Physique/Traits: Because of their fish-based diet, many cats of RushClan are notably sleek-furred, but they're also incredibly lean due to their comfort with swimming in the river. Most have rounder faces and ears, though it isn't uncommon for them to have unusually long tufts of fur on their cheeks, chins, or ears. Like SwiftClan, it's also rumored that these cats develop something similar to webbed paws to help their swimming.
>> Prefix Conventions: Many naming trends in RushClan tend to follow water-based ideas or comparisons, such as: Salmon–, Reed–, Eel–, Spruce–, Duck–, Birch–, Pike–, Turtle–, Newt–, Willow–, Minnow–, Frog–, Lily–, Tadpole–, Aspen–, Snail–, Pond–, Perch–, Otter–, Trout–, Heron–, and Dragonfly–
>> Special Notes: RushClan medicine cats will use water lily roots to help treat swollen limbs and may sometimes trade it to the other Clans for other herbs!
✧ BlazeClan
>> Current Leader: Heatherstar
>> Camp: A circle of huge, sharp, skyward-reaching stones forms the walls of the camp. Along the tallest of these formations, a small ledge leads up until it reaches an overhanging cliff. On this cliff is a cave; the leader's den.
>> Medicine den is half-cave. Stone in the back with large crevice for herb storage; "shelf" ledges on outside of stone for prebundled herbs. Ceiling is brambles and thick leaves interwoven. Far back corner is a pool, with brambles woven at the source of water to manage its flow.
>> Many of their dens are woven together in the same fashion as stated above, utilizing the dry shrubbery that litters their territory.
>> Territory: Mostly barren, sandy, and rocky territory. There are several grassy patches here and there, along with smaller, bare trees, though they're few and far between. At the far eastern edge of their territory lies a small town with Twoleg structures.
>> Landmarks: Abandoned Twoleg structure near the southeast border; very old and made of stones and bricks. Beyond the east border are clusters of Twoleg nests.
>> Typical Physique/Traits: Due to recent attacks and territory loss to the Gorge, many cats, while very muscular, are becoming very gaunt. Usually, the cats are seen as very broad-shouldered and strong, with angular faces and tough, calloused paw pads accustomed to their harsh, sandy territory. Cats whose fur blends into this environment are more often than not used on hunting patrols.
>> Prefix Conventions: Due to the dry and degraded land that makes up most of BlazeClan territory, their naming traditions might be some of the most unique. Plants and animals that thrive easily in sandy soil are more common here, so their common prefixes follow a similar pattern: Sand–, Sage–, Wild–, Iris–, Fern–, Beetle–, Yarrow–, Poplar–, Ant–, Cedar–, Lizard–, Newt–, and occasionally Larch–. Because of their limited fauna and flora, they've become creative with their names, featuring prefixes like Bounce–, Fir–, Pounce–, and Talon–, or names of things they hear in stories from traveling loners!
♡ Sacred Spots
Starfalls ;; A clearing north of the RushClan and NightClan borders. There's a pond that reflects the light of the moon, with a series of waterfalls falling down ledges until it reaches the pool. Because of the waterfalls, mist shrouds the clearing and nearby forest, sparkling in the light of the moon, as if it were tangible starlight.
The Gathering Stones / Tallrock ;; Massive ancient boulder among other smaller boulders in a dirt/sandy clearing, with many large trees and overgrown plants bordering the clearing.

17 Prime Data Science Purposes & Examples You Need To Know 2021
An enterprise analyst profile combines a little bit of each to help companies make information-pushed choices. Hard expertise required for the job include information mining, machine studying, deep studying, and the ability to integrate structured and unstructured data. Experience with statistical analysis techniques, such as modeling, clustering, data visualization and segmentation, and predictive analysis, are additionally a giant part of the roles. Data scientists create them by running machine studying, information mining or statistical algorithms towards knowledge sets to predict business scenarios and sure outcomes or behavior. Though the position of a data analyst varies depending on the corporate, normally, these professionals collect knowledge, process that knowledge and perform statistical evaluation using normal statistical instruments and strategies.
These algorithms can catch fraud faster and with higher accuracy than people, merely due to the sheer quantity of data generated every day. For example, you might collect data about a customer each time they go to your web site or brick-and-mortar store, add an merchandise to their cart, complete a buy order, open an email, or engage with a social media publication. After making certain the data from every source is correct, you have to mix it in a course referred to as data wrangling. This may involve matching a customer’s email address to their credit card data, social media handles, and purchase identifications.
It may also be used to optimize customer success and subsequent acquisition, retention, and progress. So robust soft skills, significant communication and public talking capacity are key. In addition, results ought to all the time be related back to the enterprise goals that spawned the project in the first place.
There's also deep studying, a more superior offshoot of machine learning that primarily uses artificial neural networks to analyze giant units of unlabeled information. In another article, Cognilytica's Schmelzer explains the connection between Data Science, machine studying and AI, detailing their totally different characteristics and the way they are often mixed in analytics functions. From an operational standpoint, Data Science initiatives can optimize administration of supply chains, product inventories, distribution networks and customer support. To a more fundamental degree, they point to increased efficiency and decreased costs. data science course in hyderabad additionally permits corporations to create enterprise plans and techniques which might be based mostly on informed evaluation of customer habits, market developments and competition. Without it, businesses might miss alternatives and make flawed selections.
I am trying to find out the greatest career path for me in huge information or enterprise intelligence. Predictive causal analytics – If you need a mannequin that may predict the chances of a selected event in the future, you should apply predictive causal analytics. Say, if you're offering money on credit score, then the likelihood of consumers making future credit funds on time is a matter of concern for you. Here, you'll have the ability to construct a model that can carry out predictive analytics on the fee historical past of the customer to foretell if the future funds shall be on time or not. Machine studying delivers correct results derived via the evaluation of huge knowledge sets.
With Data Science, vast volumes and numbers of knowledge can practice models better and extra successfully to indicate more precise suggestions. A lot of firms have fervidly used this engine / system to advertise their merchandise / recommendations in accordance with user’s interest and relevance of information. Internet giants like Amazon, Twitter, Google Play, Netflix, Linkedin, imdb and plenty of more use this system to enhance personal expertise.
Here is considered one of my favourite Data Scientist Venn diagrams created by Stephan Kolassa. You’ll notice that the primary ellipses in the diagram are very related to the pillars given above. What occupation did Harvard name the Sexiest Job of the twenty first Century? There remains no consensus on the definition of Data Science and it's thought-about by some to be a buzzword. Signal processing is any technique used to investigate and enhance digital alerts. This picture illustrates the private and skilled attributes of a Data Scientist.
Read up on what a knowledge cloth is and the means it will use AI and ML to transform information structure and create a new competitive advantage for companies that use it. These corporations have plenty of open Data Science jobs out there right now. Here are some examples of how Data Science is reworking sports activities beyond baseball. While both biking and public transit can curb driving-related emissions, Data Science can do the same by optimizing highway routes.
Some of the best examples of speech recognition products are Google Voice, Siri, Cortana and so on. Using speech-recognition characteristics, even if you aren’t in a position to type a message, your life wouldn’t cease. However, at occasions, you would notice, speech recognition doesn’t perform precisely. Procedures such as detecting tumors, artery stenosis, organ delineation employ varied methods and frameworks like MapReduce to find optimum parameters for duties like lung texture classification.
It’s additionally very useful in that Data Scientists typically should current and communicate results to key stakeholders, including executives. The greatest thing that every one Data Science tasks have in widespread use is the need to make use of tools and software programs to analyze the concerned algorithms and statistics, because the size of the pool of knowledge they're working with is so huge. Data scientist is doubtless considered one of the highest-paying job titles, and there's a high demand for professionals who're in a place to fill the assorted duties of the role. On the other hand, citizen Data Scientists may be hobbyists or volunteers, or might obtain a small amount of compensation for the work they do for major corporations.
Starting from the display banners on various web sites to the digital billboards at the airports – nearly all of them are decided through the use of data science algorithms. Data scientists are professionals who source, gather and analyse large sets of information. Most of the business decisions at present are based mostly on insights drawn from analysing data, that is why a Data Scientist is crucial in today’s world.

Data analysts are often given questions and targets from the top down, perform the analysis, after which report their findings. No matter what path is taken to learn, data scientist’s ought to have advanced quantitative information and extremely technical skills, primarily in statistics, mathematics, and pc science. One necessary thing to debate are off-the-shelf data science platforms and APIs. One may be tempted to suppose that these can be used relatively simply and thus not require important expertise in sure fields, and therefore not require a robust, well-rounded Data Scientist. Below is a diagram of the GABDO Process Model that I created and introduced in my e-book, AI for People and Business.
Before you start the project, it could be very important to perceive the various specifications, requirements, priorities and required price range. Data scientists are those that crack advanced information issues with their sturdy experience in certain scientific disciplines. They work with a quantity of components associated with arithmetic, statistics, computer science, etc . Traditionally, the data that we had was principally structured and small in size, which might be analyzed through the use of simple BI tools. In addition, Google offers you the choice to search for images by importing them. In their newest update, Facebook has outlined the extra progress they’ve made in this space, making particular notice of their advances in image recognition accuracy and capacity.
The recommendations are made based mostly on earlier search outcomes for a person. But there are many different search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, AOL, and so forth. All these search engines make use of Data Science algorithms to ship one of the best results for our searched question in a fraction of seconds. Considering the fact that, Google processes greater than 20 petabytes of knowledge every single day. Over the years, banking firms learned to divide and conquer information by way of buyer profiling, previous expenditures, and other essential variables to analyze the probabilities of danger and default. Yes, Data Science is a good profession path, in fact, one of many very best ones now.
If you’re new to the world of data and want to bolster your abilities, two phrases you’re prone to encounter are “data analytics” and “data science.” While these terms are associated, they discuss different things. Below is a summary of what each word means and the means it applies in business. “In this world of massive data, primary data literacy—the ability to research, interpret, and even question data—is an increasingly priceless ability,” says Harvard Business School Professor Jan Hammond within the on-line course Business Analytics.
This programming-oriented job includes creating the machine studying fashions wanted for Data Science applications. Machine learning and data science have saved the monetary business hundreds of thousands of dollars, and unquantifiable amounts of time. For instance, JP Morgan’s Contract Intelligence platform makes use of Natural Language Processing to process and extract important knowledge from about 12,000 commercial credit score agreements a year. Thanks to Data Science, what would take around 360,000 guide labor hours to complete is now finished in a few hours. Additionally, fintech companies like Stripe and Paypal are investing heavily in data science training in hyderabad to create machine studying tools that quickly detect and prevent fraudulent activities.
Applying AI cognitive applied sciences to ML methods can result in the effective processing of information and information. But what are the key variations between Data Science vs Machine Learning and AI vs ML? Simply put, synthetic intelligence aims at enabling machines to execute reasoning by replicating human intelligence. Since the principal objective of AI processes is to show machines from expertise, feeding the best data and self-correction is crucial. AI specialists depend on deep studying and natural language processing to assist machines establish patterns and inferences.
Retailers analyze customer habits and buying patterns to drive personalised product suggestions and targeted promoting, marketing and promotions. Data science also helps them manage product inventories and provide chains to maintain items in inventory. Data science permits streaming companies to trace and analyze what customers watch, which helps decide the brand new TV reveals and movies they produce. Data-driven algorithms are also used to create customized suggestions primarily based on a consumer's viewing history. It’s cutting-edge now, but soon a data cloth shall be a vital software for managing data.
The term was first used in 1960 by Peter Naur, who was a pioneer in laptop science. He described the foundational aspects of the methods and approaches used in data science in his 1974 book, Concise Survey of Computer Methods. [newline]There are many instruments out there for Data Scientists to make use of to govern and research huge portions of knowledge, and it's important to at all times evaluate their effectiveness and maintain attempting new ones as they become out there. Data scientists must depend on experience and intuition to decide which strategies will work greatest for modeling their data, and they should modify those methods constantly to hone in on the insights they seek. Data science plays an important role in safety and fraud detection, as the end result of the large quantities of information allows for drilling down to search out slight irregularities in knowledge that can expose weaknesses in safety methods. Delivery companies, freight carriers and logistics providers use Data Science to optimize supply routes and schedules, in addition to one of the best modes of transport for shipments.
Whereas knowledge analytics is primarily centered on understanding datasets and gleaning insights that can become actions, Data Science is centered on building, cleaning, and organizing datasets. Data scientists create and leverage algorithms, statistical fashions, and their own customized analyses to collect and form uncooked information into something that can be more simply understood. Some of the key variations however, are that data analysts sometimes usually are not laptop programmers, nor answerable for statistical modeling, machine learning, and lots of the other steps outlined within the Data Science process above. Many statisticians, together with Nate Silver, have argued that Data Science isn't a model new field, but quite another name for statistics. Others argue that data science is distinct from statistics as an end result of it focuses on problems and methods unique to digital knowledge. Vasant Dhar writes that statistics emphasizes quantitative knowledge and description.
They handle knowledge pipelines and infrastructure to transform and transfer data to respective Data Scientists to work on. They majorly work with Java, Scala, MongoDB, Cassandra DB, and Apache Hadoop. This web site makes use of cookies to improve your experience when you navigate through the website. Out of these, the cookies that are categorized as necessary are saved in your browser as they are essential for the working of primary functionalities of the internet site.
Yet, to harness the power of huge knowledge, it isn’t necessary to be a data scientist. Hopefully this article has helped demystify the info scientist position and other associated roles. More and more today, Data Scientists should be capable of utilizing instruments and technologies associated with huge amounts of information as nicely. Some of the most well-liked examples include Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, Hive, Pig, Drill, Presto, and Mahout.

10 Home Office Ideas That Will Make You Want to Work All Day
Whether you work from home or have carved out a space for something you love like crafting, reading, or writing, your home office is a place that should inspire the flow of creativity and allow you to get down to business. But often, that's not the case. In fact, home offices can be the most neglected spaces in our homes—messy and unfriendly environments for inspiration, driving us to work anywhere but in the actual office, like the couch, or kitchen, or bed (guilty!). To help you create and update your own inspiring space, we asked experts—from designers to bloggers and editors—for their advice on the best home office updates and small home office ideas that will make you want to buckle down and get to work.
1. Think Chic Your space should inspire you—and reflect your unique personality. So don't be afraid to go all out.“We wanted to design a space that was fashionable, functional and reflected homeowner Desi Perkins’ personality. The black accent wall added some drama and depth to the space and we added a chandelier above the desk to add a little glitz and glamour. The wood tiled sideboard keeps the space organized, serving as a storage unit for beauty products and countertop for office supplies. The functionality of the space makes it possible for Desi to stay on top of the business side of her career while the chic decor provides the perfect backdrop for her videos and Instagram photos.” — Leura Fine, CEO and Founder of Laurel & Wolf
Get The Look: One way to glam up a home office is by refreshing your lighting. This eye-catching pendant lamp with gold detailing from Target will give your space a luxurious, yet professional feel.
2. Add Green Breathe some life into your space, so you'll want to stay longer. “I try to ensure a balanced home office which is practical, ergonomic, comfortable, and clean—if these elements aren’t in place I know I’ll end up working at the kitchen table! A lovely plant is said to help keep you feeling calm and clean the air—plus it looks pretty too. I like either a Snake Plant or a ZZ plant. Both look lovely, are good for cleaning the air, and are low maintenance!” — Niki Brantmark, Author and Founder of My Scandinavian Home
Get The Look: We adore this elevated cute little clay planter—perfect home for a snake plant—to add some dimension to your work space.
3. Get Artsy Decorate with images that speak to you. Even if you're crunching numbers all day. “Fill your office with vibrant art to energize your space and make you feel motivated. I create my own artwork and have it framed by Simply Framed, or I shop from Chairish and Society6.” — Dabito, Founder & Creative Director at Old Brand New
Get The Look: Dabito is happy to share his genius DIY instructions for his multi-purpose wall shelf/desk. (They're surprisingly easy to follow, phew!) But if you don’t want to spend your Saturday spray-painting and building shelves this wall unit from Ikea is a similarly chic option that can be up and ready fast!
4. Find the Rug Ground your space with a colorful area rug—for visual interest and soothing sound-absorption. “The multi-colored rug brings in other colors that accent the peach and green nicely, too. But you could also do a neutral gray rug with this color combo. Keep the furniture simple and clean to make it more sleek, and then add in some green foliage to give the room some texture!” — Joy Cho, Founder & Creative Director of Oh Joy!
Get The Look: World Market is great for beautiful, affordable textiles, and we're loving this multi-shaded patterned rug, which works with light blue, plum, apricot, or creamy white walls.
5. Practice Hygge Make it welcoming—but not too cozy that all you want to do is nap. "Neutral colors on your walls and floor, paired with natural wood, plants and some kind of textile, like blankets, throw pillows, rugs or a yarn wall hanging, create a simple yet cozy working space.” — Caitlin & Manda, Co-founders of The Merrythought
Get The Look: This soft space-dyed throw from West Elm is just what your home office needs. Create a DIY blanket ladder, and hang a few wool ones near your desk for keeping warm in winter; switch them out with thin, cotton ones in the summer.
6. Hang a Gallery Wall It's your space—crowd it with what you love. “Style a gallery wall against a neutral wall. You can arrange them on the floor first, moving the prints around until you achieve the harmonious look that you want. Use removable wall strips to hold your prints up. This allows for the flexibility of changing the look of the wall.” — Geraldine Tan, Founder & Editor of Little Big Bell
Get The Look: We love Minted for their huge, affordable collection of prints. They also provide a free service so that you can text a picture of your wall to their stylists, and they’ll put together a recommendations of art pairings for you. Matting and frames are a way to make art prints look more expensive and styled, but can be a pricey investment. Don’t rule out Michaels—they do custom framing in store!
7. Mix Old and New Don't be afraid to steal decor from other rooms in the house. A mix of vintage and modern makes a home feel warm and lived in and personal, instead of feeling like a showroom. “We paired a gorgeous antique rug that the client already had (hidden away in a dark spot elsewhere in the house!) and a pair of new red chairs. The art on the walls is limited to black and white images so that the color in the space doesn’t become too overwhelming. It is such a comfortable, beautiful room to work in.” — Melissa Mascara, Designer at Homepolish
Get The Look: Nothing in the attic? Shop antique stores, flea markets, and even Craigslist to find pieces for your office, whether it’s an aged roll top desk or vintage lamp, and pair these with brand new items, like a pair of vibrant chairs for guests to use when you’re hosting a meeting from home.
8. Let Light in Stay connected to the great outdoors. "Natural light makes a space feel bigger—which is always a plus in a small space. For my home office I actually used fogged window film on all the windows so I could always have the blinds up. This allows enough light to feed the plants in the room and keep them, as well as myself, lively! And when you feel alive, you’re always more efficient.” — Hayley Francis, Founder and Blogger at Neon Doves
Get The Look: If you, like Hayley, have an office that also functions as a dressing room/walk-in closet, affix a non-adhesive frosted film to windows, to allow sunlight into your space while maintaining privacy.
9. Work in Color Choose colors that speak to you—not what's trendy. “I found this Stone Blue color by Farrow & Ball provided the perfect background for a productive day’s work. Having a bit of fun with the filing cabinets in a non-conventional turquoise meant that even the more functional elements of the room looked attractive.” — Emily Murray, Founder & Editor at The Pink House
Get The Look: Whether you’re painting office walls, shelves, and ceiling with one color to make the space feel larger, or using a filing cabinet like this one from CB2 for just a pop of color, working in a color-filled environment can make you more inspired to work from your office—and not the couch.
10. Optimize Your Space Organization is key—use every trick in the book. Nobody works well in a messy home office. “Don’t waste an ounce of space by tucking printers, filing, etc into corners and in drawers. Use all your vertical space, too, by putting cabinets up to the ceiling with varying types of storage and a wall hanging pin board to help organize supplies that might otherwise end up shoved in a drawer!” — Carly Callahan, Designer at Homepolish and Founder of Callahan Interiors.
Get The Look: This is one home office decor idea that's non-negotiable! Kick off your newfound commitment to organization with this rose gold wall grid.

LUCILLE BALL LOVES HER HECTIC TV LIFE
January 2, 1965
On Saturday, January 2, 1965, syndicated columnist Peter Dacre of the London Expressed published an article about Lucille Ball...a busy woman. As with most syndicated columns, publication dates and headlines varied by newspaper. Quotes from Lucille Ball are in bold italics. Photographs have been added for editorial enhancement.
Peter Dacre (1925-2003) was a journalist with the Sunday Express whose work included show business features. He was a former chairman of the London Press Club.
Lucille Ball’s three-wheeled runabout was parked outside the bungalow with the red door in the Hollywood studios of Desilu Productions Inc. It was symbolic of the hectic life of its owner, a woman who is not only one of the world’s top television stars but is also president of the studio where she works — and an active wife and mother.
For 14 years the vivacious, raspy-voiced red-haired woman has been making countless millions of viewers laugh first in “I Love Lucy” (with her former husband Desi Arnaz) and now with “The Lucy Show,” which is seen in 44 countries.
Inside the bungalow the bound scripts of her shows fill a shelf and a half — the end ones being propped up by a volume of Shakespeare, a copy of “Moby Dick,” and the New Testament.
MISS BALL herself seemed equally to be a mixture of contrasts. In blue slacks and a pin-striped shirt, she looked highly unlike the president and 51 per cent owner of a company which regularly grosses some 25 million dollars.
Talking to studio executives before I met her, however, I discovered she is no mere figurehead. Scrawled messages on yellow paper fly around the offices, and conferences take place frequently before, during, and after her appearances on the set.
All this is a remarkable achievement for someone who started in show business as one of the famous Goldwyn Girls of the early Hollywood musicals and was once a small-part actress in the studio she now controls.
What kind of woman is she? How at 52 does she combine her three careers? Miss Ball sat at a cluttered round table before her yellow memo-pad and explained:
“I’m no business tycoon by nature. It was sort of thrust upon me. Desi and I bought the studio for $6,500,000 in 1958 and when he and I parted he said he wanted to leave the business. This faced me with the choice of continuing or saying ‘Goodbye’ to a group of people I loved working with.”
“I had no desire to retire, but it was a difficult decision. I was warned it would take a double expenditure of time and energy but I finally decided to do it — and took over my ex-husband’s shares in the company.”
“It took me two years to find the right men to help me run the company — and they were two tough years.”
“I had conferences in curlers and in my runabout and between shots on the set. When I arrived in the morning, every office door would open and people would pop out saying: Have you a minute?’
HOW, as a woman boss, has she managed in a mainly masculine world?
“Well, I was working in show business as opposed to selling buttons or refrigerators, and in show business I have been accorded some respect, so that was a big help.”
“It could have been a problem if I had thrown my weight around in areas I know nothing about.” I wondered if she felt that running a Hollywood studio had toughened her as a woman. She pondered and then asked an aide: “Do you think I've become tougher?” He thought not.
Finally she said: “If a woman has a tough fiber it comes out in these circumstances, but faced with a problem my first inclination is to cry.”
“Sure I’ve been painted as a bossy type but I’ve never felt like that. It’s been said that I bark out orders but I bark out the recipe for a chocolate cake if I’m in a hurry.”
Today apart from running the company and appearing in her own series Lucille Ball has a radio interview program occasionally crops up in other television shows and is planning a film.
SHE IS NOW married to comedian and radio producer Gary Morton, has two children from her marriage with Arnaz (’Little’ Lucy, 13, and Desi, 11) and two homes, one in Beverly Hills, the other 140 miles away in Palm Springs.
How does she manage to run her home and family? “I budget my time and organize our family life,” she explained.
“I used to have a conflict between my career and my home life. When children are small you miss so much of their growing-up — so many wonderful moments. Now they are grown up they don’t need me so much.”
“But I am a proper mother and housewife. I plan the menus and the housework. I leave notes in profusion — in the car, in the kitchen, or on my dressing-table mirror. You know the sort of thing:”
“’Check dental appointment’: ‘See music practice is done ‘Do homework’ ‘Don’t forget baseball practice’ and ‘Tell the kids to eat early because I’ll be late — then they can watch TV’.”
“Oh yes, we have troubles like any other family. The other night Lucy spoke to me rudely and I sent her to her room until she apologized.”
“A little later, while I was on the phone, she came down and stood in the doorway with her birdcage in one hand and a suitcase in the other. I just kept on talking and after a while she went away.”
“I watched her go slowly down the path, slowly along the road, and slowly round the corner. After half an hour she came back and burst into the room. ‘Aren’t you ever going to try to stop me?’ She cried.”
WILL Lucille Ball ever be able to stop herself and break away from her remorseless routine?
She did not hesitate over her answer. “At the moment, I haven’t decided whether I will continue ‘The Lucy Show’ but I can’t visualize retiring. I’ll never get out of this. The pace doesn’t bother me, I'm well organized.”
That, I reflected, was as good a summing-up of Lucille Ball as you will ever get.

What Search Entrepreneurs Must Know About Criteo’s Retail Media Platform
New Post has been published on http://tiptopreview.com/what-search-marketers-need-to-know-about-criteos-retail-media-platform/
What Search Entrepreneurs Must Know About Criteo’s Retail Media Platform
Should you’ve been within the paid search trade for a number of years, you then’ve most likely heard about Criteo – and even used it.
You may additionally be accustomed to Criteo Retail Media from again within the days when it may very well be described as an advert community for sponsored merchandise, circa 2016 when Criteo acquired an organization referred to as Hooklogic.
Hooklogic had constructed a enterprise by aggregating stock throughout many retailers and enabling manufacturers to bid on that stock on a CPC foundation.
As well as, you might also know that Criteo acquired an organization referred to as Storetail in 2018, to assist retailers supply new artistic codecs and focusing on choices.
However what you might need missed is the announcement of Criteo’s new Retail Media platform.
For now, I’m going to stay with this sponsored merchandise piece and the platform that powers it, as that represents an simply attainable motion merchandise going into not solely vacation, however 2021 planning.
So, let’s dive into what the Retail Media platform does for sponsored merchandise.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
This technology permits retailers to serve advertisements that mix into the present web site construction, appear and feel. It permits the retailer to “sell” placements in search outcomes, browse pages, and wherever else they really feel a sponsored product placement will align with consumer expectations.
So retailers can deal with being retailers, not an advert administration platform or software program builders, enabling them to get to market quicker with advertising offerings, with out absorbing the prices of proudly owning, sustaining, and constructing out an promoting expertise stack.
Which is, in the event you cease to consider it, an especially massive and costly set of duties to get executed proper.
The opposite factor that this format does is present manufacturers with an always-on choice for promoting with that retailer.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
Conventional retailer promoting will be very closely administrative-based, even with online-only show flights, with insertion orders, massive budgets or minimums, weeks of planning round artistic belongings and evaluate, lockout intervals, and post-campaign reporting, that may’t occur till the complete attribution interval has handed.
Whereas these bigger show buys can get you attributed in-store elevate, basket evaluation, and model halo results – it could actually take eight weeks post-campaign finish to get it.
Criteo now works with retailers in North America to supply enterprise-level self-service promoting instruments to manufacturers, together with Goal, Finest Purchase, Costco, Meijer, Macy’s, Kohl’s, Walgreen’s, CVS, and Ulta.
What’s superior with the Retail Media platform is that the advertiser can select for his or her advertisements to seem on a single retailer, or to run a marketing campaign with a number of retailers and nonetheless break down reporting on the particular person retailer stage.
Manufacturers can use funds caps to allocate funds to completely different retailers on the ranges wanted, or leverage AI to allocate funds dynamically to realize the perfect return on advert spend.
Some retailers, like Goal, already used Criteo for an unique atmosphere they name “Private Market” by which the advertisements are proven solely on course.com.
Having the ability to goal solely Goal (pun meant) is admittedly helpful to manufacturers who wish to push extra gross sales particularly at goal.com and even leverage product recognition to a necessity for extra bodily shelf house, assortment growth and in addition for these Goal Plus sellers within the market that want to advertise their merchandise and would not have in-store presence.
How It Works
Sponsored merchandise by way of Criteo is a CPC mannequin and a first-price public sale.
It’s not keyword-based. The main target is extra on the person SKUs.
All SKUs have key phrases already related to them, because of info from retailer product feeds, information collected from retailer websites, and Criteo’s AI.
Manufacturers would not have to then dedicate sources to creating creatives.
Bids will be set on the line merchandise stage and on the SKU stage. The idea of a line merchandise is definitely new within the Retail Media platform.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
Previously, you needed to sub-divide campaigns utilizing “product groups” to group SKUs.
Now, you create line gadgets, and every serves as a tactic to gasoline the technique of your bigger marketing campaign. You affiliate a retailer with every line merchandise.
This lets you have management over the place your funds goes, in addition to see retailer-level reporting.
As well as, the SKU-level bidding characteristic allows you to now handle CPC bids on particular person merchandise.
Commercial

By adjusting a product’s bid, you possibly can regulate the product’s competitiveness within the public sale.
By the in-line enhancing software, you possibly can enter and save a brand new CPC worth for every product within the Product Bid Override discipline. The worth entered must both be equal to or larger than the minimal ground bid.
One other distinction within the new platform is that these flooring at the moment are set by the retailer, to allow them to fluctuate fairly a bit inside classes. Beforehand minimal bids have been set by Criteo for his or her run of community campaigns.
As soon as entered, the product will use the brand new CPC worth for bidding. Merchandise that don’t have a Product Bid Override worth specified will mechanically use the road merchandise bid.
With this new marketing campaign construction, there may be much more flexibility in group. For instance, you possibly can have a marketing campaign with one line merchandise for one retailer.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
You can too have a marketing campaign with 10-line gadgets, every with a distinct retailer. Or you possibly can have 100 SKUs on a line merchandise.
Every line merchandise has a begin date and an non-obligatory finish date. (Begin and finish dates aren’t at marketing campaign stage.)
You possibly can select to set a funds for the road merchandise, in addition to use day by day or month-to-month pacing instruments. Or, you possibly can select to not set a line merchandise funds, and depend on the funds set on the marketing campaign stage.
Your alternative.
Whereas day by day and month-to-month funds pacing was moved from the marketing campaign stage to the road merchandise stage within the new platform, attribution is now on the marketing campaign stage reasonably than the account stage.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
As well as, Criteo is now offering a number of extra attribution choices. Beforehand, you possibly can solely do 30-day post-click and 1-day post-view. Choices now embrace Publish-Click on: seven days/14 days/30 days and Publish-Seen: None/sooner or later/seven days/14 days/30 days.
Manufacturers can now align with the attribution home windows they’re utilizing with different platforms in the event that they so select.
Reporting
As talked about, manufacturers can now view retailer-level reporting. As well as, Criteo is normalizing metrics throughout retailers, making it simple so that you can evaluate efficiency throughout retailers.
The brand new platform additionally contains information visualization, so now you can slice and cube with customizable studies with the metrics you need.
You possibly can obtain studies instantly from the UI, or schedule studies by way of e-mail.
Get Began
Technically, there aren’t any spend minimums to achieve entry to the Retail Media platform.
Commercial
Proceed Studying Under
Nevertheless, pricing on the platform varies relying upon spend commitments and in the event you select to leverage Criteo’s managed service group for administration help.
With the launch of this new platform, Criteo has additionally advanced its pricing mannequin to supply full transparency to manufacturers, companies, and retailers.
The brand new pricing mannequin aligns with media and price pricing that’s utilized by different media shopping for instruments and creates extra transparency and adaptability to pay for what you utilize.
I extremely advocate testing the “Consumer Product Brands: It’s Time to Take Control of Your Retail Media Destiny” report performed by Forrester, commissioned by Criteo. The complete report is offered for obtain and covers the panorama of retail media as it’s in the present day. And you may try the place you sit in opposition to the respondents and their maturity into retail media as part of their course of and optimization.
It would value you an e-mail to get it, however I believed it price it. And if not, there may be loads of different materials within the Sources part. From there, you possibly can contact Criteo to get began.

FIND THAT POST HERE! My Top Organizing Tips! Instead of digging through years of my archives to find individual tips, I am going to compile the best of the best in a single, very informational post! It's going to be a whopper and a really great resource for projects of any size. FIND THAT POST HERE! Labeling 101: Quick & Easy Labeling Techniques I have tried almost every type of label on the market, from vinyl to label makers to stickers and chalk markers, and they all have their place. But what are my tried and true favorites? What do I reach for with almost any project due to time, cost, practicality, and ease? I will be sharing three labeling techniques that haven't failed me yet, and that you won't need any fancy tools to utilize. FIND THAT POST HERE! Practical, Everyday Storage Solutions! If I have learned anything from raising three boys and organizing along the way, it is that storage can be expensive and that our needs are constantly evolving. Gone are the days where I purchase pretty bins and baskets to decorate with. Although I will always appreciate beautiful storage, it has to be versatile and it has to last! With that in mind, there are a few storage products that I have found that continuously work hard for me in a variety of situations, so they end up being the types of products I gravitate toward when working on any new projects. For the final post in the series, I am putting together the ultimate storage source list with tips and products that I have fallen in love with over the years. So let's dive in with part four of the four-part series: Practical, Everyday Storage Solutions!
As you go through the motions of organizing areas of your home, storage should be the last piece of the organizing puzzle. Storage baskets and organizers aren't always necessary, but they really can be a key component in keeping a simple and tidy space. Here are just a few of the consistent benefits I have seen by utilizing baskets, bins, containers and drawer dividers over the years:
Containers assign items a proper home to return to.
Containers prevent items from becoming jumbled and messy.
Containers keep items divided into specific categories.
Containers allow for easier portability/accessibility.
Containers offer a place for your eye to rest and ultimately aid in finding items quicker (by eliminating visual clutter).
A few more container-specific tips I have picked up over the years:
Wait until the very end of any organizing project to determine best container types/overall storage needs (after you sort and eliminate you may find you need less storage than you initially thought).
Always keep receipts/tags in and on your storage until you have taken it for a test run. If it isn't making your day-to-day life easier after a week or two, head back to the drawing board.
Storage is meant to aid and simplify, so if it is complicating things, ditch it.
Think long term. Don't select items that are a specific color, are trendy, or only going to be relevant for a specific season of life. Look into products that will stay versatile as your needs evolve. I have learned over the past 15 years the types of storage that have longevity and versatility and what ends up in the donate pile. My general rule is to select products that are neutral in finish/texture; clear, white, linen, and natural/woven materials always win.
Storage can be really expensive, but it doesn't have to be! I will never be above sourcing pretty storage solutions and finding a way to DIY or hack things on a budget. Cardboard boxes can be covered in fabric, dividers can be cut from wood, cereal and shoeboxes can be wrapped in paper, modular pieces can be combined to create dream closets... A little creativity goes a long way and sometimes custom solutions are the best way to maximize and get exactly what you need.
It would only be appropriate to start with my number one favorite storage item of all time:
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

Why I Love These: The Multi-Purpose Bins are easily the most versatile bin I have found. They come in a variety of widths for your varying needs, yet are extremely uniform. They are translucent so you can see the contents. They are lightweight. They are easy to clean. They have an open-top so everything is easy to put away. They are inexpensive. They can be used to file anything from papers to foods. Versatile Ways to Use These Bins:
Create categories in the fridge, freezer, and pantry: produce, condiments, snacks, breakfast items, bread/wraps, cereals, etc...
Use in miscellaneous kitchen cabinets for baking sheets, cutting boards, paper products/disposable dishware, water bottles/tumblers, food wraps/bags, drop zone items, and cleaning supplies.
Use under the bathroom sink for toiletries, paper products, and cleaning supplies.
File paperwork and magazines in the home office, or use them to corral miscellaneous gadgets/tech, and vinyl rolls/yarn/craft supplies.
Because these bins are so easy to clean, they can also be used in the garage for small tools, garden supplies, grilling utensils, small toys/activities, pet supplies, and auto maintenance items.
In the linen closet, these bins are great for categorizing first aid supplies, medication, toiletries, sheet sets, vacuum attachments, and cleaning supplies.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

Why I Love These: Turntables are known for offering easy access to your items with just a simple spin. They are especially great in narrow and corner areas when it can be trickier to access items near the back of a cabinet or shelf. Versatile Ways to Use Turntables:
Corner cabinets are always awkward to maximize, but we added oversized turntables to two lower shelves and haven't regretted it for a single second. They are so handy and I feel sincere delight every day when I give them a spin and easily grab just what I need. We use them for oils/sauces/spreads and food storage containers, but they would also work well for coffee canisters/mugs, vases/accessories, dishes, and baking canisters. (see our original DIY tutorial here)
Use these under kitchen sinks for cleaning and household maintenance products.
In the fridge so that items don't fall prey to disappearing on the backs of the shelves. I finally swapped ours to a version with a lip and it is infinitely better than one without.
Add these in a variety of shapes/sizes to make the most of awkward and deep pantry/cabinet shelves. Bottles, jars, and cans are most common, but small packages and boxes can also be stored on these handy helpers.
Add them to bathroom/linen closet shelves for toiletries.
Put them to work in home offices/craft rooms filled with paints, coloring tools, scissors, glue, small notepads, etc...
Pop one on top of the washer to hold stain remover, detergent, dryer sheets, lint roller, and a change jar.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

Pantry:
Many years ago I fell in love with these containers for all of our dried goods in our pantry. Since then, I have really reduced the number of items I actually decant on a weekly basis. I have also since discovered some comparable containers from Target that seem to do a much better job of locking in the freshness for longer periods in time. So good that I have made the switch to these for our baking ingredients as well as for beans and snacks in our coffee cabinet. Produce:
Since my last fridge post, I also swapped out our produce containers after many, many years. A few months ago I spotted these Prepworks Produce Prokeepers at our local Costco (no longer available) and I instantly appreciated that they were flexible enough to store a large variety of produce types inside of the fridge. They include detailed instructions right on the lids with the best way to get the longest shelf life for everything from lettuce to berries to mushrooms and grapes. These containers have vents on the ends that can be opened or closed depending on the contents, as well as a drip tray that can be used to add or collect moisture. I also appreciate the more compact sizes and that the containers stack and wash nicely. Leftovers: We began using glass food storage containers for produce, meal prep, snacks, and leftovers quite a few years ago, and I continue to heart them just as much today. I look for containers with snapping/locking lids, and they do such a great job maintaining freshness. The biggest perk is that the containers last forever (haven't had one break on us yet). They also wash beautifully each and every time, no more worrying about trapped food smells or red stains. Finally, many glass storage containers can quickly and easily go straight from the fridge to the oven or microwave without dirtying another container for cooking. Snacking:
We use two types of containers for snack prep each week. And although both are still plastics, they have cut down on our single-use plastic usage significantly. Each week I do a lot of snack prep for our family which includes peppers, cucumbers, berries, grapes, peas, cherry tomatoes, carrots, etc... These small reusable bags (8 oz) and these stackable containers (20 oz) have both done a great job in getting our snacks through the week while remaining portable for quick grab-and-go moments. A bonus is they are both dishwasher safe, and can also also be used for dry snacks like nuts, granola, pretzels, and crackers.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

Why I Love These: Shoe boxes are another one of those containers that will remain versatile around your home year after year. They are ideal for corralling and categorizing a variety of smaller items in any space. The lids allow them to stack, which is generally a perk for making the most of vertical shelf space. Just be careful, stackable containers are only beneficial when they aren't being used on a daily basis. Versatile Ways to These Containers: Shoe boxes work best in cabinets and closets to manage and separate a variety of items. We also like to use them in our garage and storage room on shelves for managing tools and hardware. Here are just a few ways these boxes can work some storage magic:
Shoes
Small Toys
Medications/First Aid
Small Tools
Hardware for window treatments, furniture, hooks, spare parts, etc...
Craft Supplies
Pet Supplies
Candles
Party Supplies/Entertaining Accessories
Travel Toiletries
Nail Polish/Care
Car Kits
Essential Oils
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');
JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.
Why I Love These: These drawers can store all of the same things as shoe boxes, but they keep things much easier to access. You can stack them, but you don't have to remove anything to access the contents inside. I prefer to spend a little more on storage drawers (vs. shoe boxes) when organizing high traffic areas. Versatile Ways to These Drawers:
Under the kitchen sink for scrubbers, sponges, dishwasher pods, dishcloths/rags, soaps...
In an office/craft room for small supplies.
In a linen closet for medications, toiletries, and pet supplies.
Under the bathroom sink for toiletries/feminine products (not just for yourself, but to keep items divided by person also).
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

Why I Love These: Drawer dividers are to drawers what bins are to closets and cabinets. They are a really great way to categorize and separate items, while ultimately preventing jumbled and tangled messes. Opening a divided drawer should allow you to quickly see and access exactly what you are looking for, and will also cause a pause-and-think-moment when putting things away. I have tried a few types of organizers over the years, but there are a select few that I continue to come back to time and time again due to their versatility, sizing, and cleanliness. Office | Bathroom | Junk Drawers:
I have two favorites for these types of drawers: acrylic and rubber-coated options. Both can easily be removed and washed, both have a variety of size offerings to mix and match and create endless configurations, and both are priced fair due to the longevity and flexibility they offer. Acrylic gives a bonus of seeing through to a pretty liner, but you really can't go wrong with either. Kitchen:
Cooking utensils come in a wide variety of sizes, so I like to look for organizers that offer at least a 14" long option which should accommodate most turners and spoons. We have been known to create custom DIY dividers for most of our utensil drawers, but another great option I have been recently using on some projects are the expandable dividers.
These drawer organizers are spring-loaded and can quickly divide drawers in half, thirds, fourths... whatever you like! I have become such a superfan, and although I was skeptical if they were worth the investment, I can officially say that they are. Clothing: Again, two favorite methods for organizing clothing drawers that both work so dang well I couldn't name a favorite from the two.
One way I tackle clothing drawers it to look for soft-sided boxes, which are the ideal for the filing method while also creating general categories for pajamas, long-sleeves, short sleeves, socks, undergarments, leggings, tanks, etc...
Another way is to divide from front to back by creating channels to hold folded/filed clothing in place. We have DIY'd this method in the past here, but you can also use the longer spring-loaded options for an immediate solution.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

Why I Love These: The storage flexibility that these boxes offer is similar to that of a shoebox, but they are pretty enough to double as display/shelving accessories. They completely conceal the clutter while keeping things accessible in a decorative way. These are especially ideal on open shelves/closets but are flexible enough to work just about anywhere. Versatile Ways to Use These Boxes:
Artwork/Paper/Supplies
Office Supplies
Crafting Supplies
Batteries
Documents/Paperwork
Awards/Ribbons/Metals
Memorabilia
Tech/Cords
Photos
Entryway clutter
Media (DVD's, home videos, etc...)
Sewing Supplies
Clothing Accessories: belts, scarves, clutches, etc...
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');
JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.
Why I Love These: Another beautiful but practical piece of storage is an oversized lidded basket. Storage definitely has to be functional first, but when it is attractive? Such a bonus! Woven baskets are extremely timeless, so you can invest once and expect to keep the basket until the end of time. Especially oversized lidded options which look great in any room while fully concealing bulkier items. Versatile Ways to Use Oversized Lidded Baskets:
Bedrooms: They make the perfect hamper as they trap any smells while concealing the visual laundry mess. Living/Family Rooms: They are ideal for concealing bulky toys, blankets, and throw pillows. Bathrooms: They work well for holding clean or dirty linens. Entryways: They can conceal shoes, pet supplies, winter gear, or handbags. Home Office: Decoratively stash away bulky supplies like camera gear/lighting, work totes, crafting tools, gift wrap supplies, and unsightly small electronics.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');

Why I Love These: Anytime space can be maximized, I am an instant fan! Walls and doors are commonly underutilized potential, and door organizers (which can generally be installed on walls as well) create a lot of storage something out of nothing. Versatile Ways to Use Door Organizers:
Kitchen: Pantry doors are eager to party with jars, cans, bottles, boxes, snacks, and spices. Family/Media Room: Add a door organizer to manage technology components, controllers, cords, batteries, photo albums, small games, and media cases. Entryway: Maximize the back of the door with storage for hats/mittens, shoes, handbags, pet supplies, keys, wallet, sunglasses, and even a mail dropzone.
Bedrooms: Install a combination of hooks, baskets, and rails to organize shoes, accessories, jewelry, and hang outfits. Works for folks of all ages! Bathroom: The back of the door is a great place to organize paper products, toiletries, washcloths/handtowels, and tub toys.
Laundry Room: Door organizers can be loaded with sponges, cleaners, stain removal products, paper products, rags, lint rollers, trash bags, light bulbs, and so much more! Storage Room: Project and paint supplies fit perfectly inside of door rack baskets. Keep all of your paintbrushes, deglossers/thinners, rollers, sanding blocks, caulk, rags, drop cloths, and spackle in an easy-to-gather-but-doesn't-take-up-a-lot-of-space location.
Home Office/Craft Room: Gift wrap organizers are all of the rage, and rightfully so! We have all scrambled to put together a last-minute gift, and having everything in a single location behind the door takes away a bit of that panic. Or maybe you don't have a full office and need to organize your supplies, ink cartridges, reams of paper, crafts, etc... in a compact way (or you just prefer not to see all of that).

What kind of organizer doesn't talk about good, old fashioned woven baskets? I have grown to prefer natural baskets far more than any other finish for a few reasons, many that have already been discussed above. Traditional and timeless? Check. Versatile? Check. Textural and beautiful? Check. I still have woven baskets from when we built our home almost 18 years ago because I continuously move them around and find new uses for them. They are made to last from natural material. And did I mention they will always look good? OK then.
I find myself consistently heading to the same places to seek out the best deals and the nicest looking baskets. You can rarely go wrong by heading to HomeGoods/Marshalls/TJMaxx in terms of sizing, variety, and prices. Target always has really substantial, beautiful options, but can be a little more expensive. Pottery Barn and Container Store also have really lovely solutions, so when they have good coupons or sales, I pounce. And of course, you can never go wrong with the BRANÄS baskets from IKEA. The smaller size fits on most cabinet and bookcase shelves, while the larger size is a wonderful match to many of the modular units sectioned by squared openings.
________________
I seemed to have taken a note from The Lorax because this post just kept biggering and biggering as I wrote it. I also love that the more images I sifted through, the more I saw many of these same products on repeat inside of drawers, closets, and cabinets. Each and every one of these storage solutions has been tested by me multiple times over the years, and receive my super-sized stamp of approval. I also hope that this post was able to give you new ideas for reusing storage you may already have on hand. Versatile should always be the name of the storage game! from IHeart Organizing http://www.iheartorganizing.com/2019/07/the-best-of-best-practical-everyday.html

An inside view of ADHD: What your doctor probably didn’t tell you
This started life as a more accessible version of my ADHD list for writers, and turned into a two-part series. That’s how ADHD works sometimes.
This is part 2.
1. ADHD is an executive function disability.
Executive function is hard to define, even for researchers. However, all agree it’s a set of skills that let us control our behavior and respond flexibly to a changing environment. Executive function skills include:
Executive functions are like the conductor in an orchestra, while the different parts of our brains are the musicians.
Each musician in the orchestra plays beautifully alone. But to sound good when playing together, they need a conductor. The conductor keeps them playing with the same timing and the same style.
Similarly, each part of our brain functions pretty well independently. But when we need to do a new or complex task, we need multiple parts to work together with the right timing. To do that, we need executive functions.
2. We may have a distinctive way of thinking and talking.
People with ADHD might think in a web instead of a straight line. Here’s a blog post that illustrates the difference.
Each connection between ideas is logical, but because we zigzag through it, our train of thought looks disorganized to people without ADHD who do not share our “mental map” of the world.
We move through our mental web through associations.
A stray thought, another person’s words, or something we see or hear can remind us of something else. Because we’re easily distracted, we often go off on tangents. Because we have poor short term memory, we then forget what we were talking about previously.
We also talk fast, trying to pack all the necessary background information in our web into the shortest amount of time, before people get impatient.
As a result, when we talk to people without ADHD, both people often get frustrated.
But before you blame yourself and apologize for the communication problem, know that nothing is smoother and more energizing than a conversation between people with ADHD who think this way!
It feels exhilarating, and the energy builds increasingly as we talk. Everything the other person says makes perfect sense. We can go on for hours and never run out of things to say (or return to the topic we started with). We can finally be ourselves and talk comfortably, without worrying about irritating or confusing the other person.
Another positive to our thinking style: it’s ideal for “divergent thinking,” for making creative associations that wouldn’t occur to most people.
Priti Shah’s research team finds that ADHD adults excel at certain types of divergent thinking, which can help them outperform neurotypicals on both creativity tests and real-world creative achievement.
3. ADHD is a production disability, not a learning disability.
Because we think in a non-linear fashion, it’s harder and more time-consuming to explain our thoughts to other people. You first have to figure out what to say (and what not to), and put it in an order other people will understand, before you can speak or write.
If the inside of your head looked like this, you’d have trouble communicating your thoughts, too!
That means that deadlines are a lot harder for us to meet, even if we can remember them (a big if!).
ADHD is often categorized as a learning disability in education systems, but that’s a mistake. Many of us have no difficulty getting information into our brains. Our difficulty is with production: expressing what we know by a deadline, in the correct format.
Some consequences of this:
1) A person with ADHD may well be brilliant in class discussions and in-class quizzes, but perform poorly on long-term papers and presentations. It’s because of how our brain works, not because of the amount of effort we put in!
2) For a person with ADHD, the content of schoolwork is easy, and if we turn it in on time we’ll get an A. But turning it in is harder than the homework itself.
3) As a result, we have an all or nothing pattern of achievement. We either ace or fail assignments depending on whether we manage to turn them in on time and format them correctly.
4) We also have all or nothing effort. There’s no way to gradate effort because if we put less effort in, we won’t finish and turn in the assignment at all. People often say “just do the minimum,” but that doesn’t work for us.
4. What other people think is “hard” is often easy for us, and what they think is “easy” is often hard.
Homework isn’t the only case where the “hard” part is easy for us, and the “easy part” is hard.
Free to Be says:
I have difficulty with some of the boring paper shuffling tasks but am really good at creating websites, brainstorming, creating presentations and new systems. Does anyone out there feel that people treat you as less intelligent because we have difficulty with simple tasks?
I wrote a post discussing “the complex is simple, the simple is complex” phenomenon here.
5. Boredom is torture, and we get bored REALLY easily.
Boredom feels like Chinese water torture. Every second is a drop of water.
Boredom feels like being in a sensory deprivation tank. You feel like you’re going crazy.
All of us find boredom more painful than the average person. But we vary in how often we experience boredom, and how we deal with it.
Some are constantly bored, and highly aware of their search for stimulation. Others, like me, think they’re never bored, because they always keep themselves occupied.
In my youth, I always carried a book to read and a sketchbook to write in, and I’d read even while crossing the street. At the breakfast table, if conversation was impossible, I would read the cereal box.
Only when I started learning to cook did I realize that I can get bored and desperate to wander off within less than 30 seconds.
6. We often have bad memory.
I’m not sure why, but people with ADHD often have a bad memory.
In particular, our memories aren’t useful or deliberate. That is, we can remember random details from our childhood or trivia about our interests. But we have trouble remembering what we did on a particular day, when someone’s birthday is, or even our own phone number.
Poor working memory is common, and linked to lower brain activity than neurotypicals in the frontal lobe.
Having a bad memory affects more than academics:
We might be constantly writing things down.
We might worry about how to organize this record of our lives, and what would happen if it were destroyed in a natural disaster.
We might worry about whether anything we experience is “real” or meaningful if we’re almost guaranteed to forget it.
7. We have especially bad prospective memory, which is remembering to remember.
One of my most frustrating ADHD difficulties is my failure to “remember to remember.”
Without extensive strategies to remind myself, I remember errands I need to run at times I can’t do them, and forget about them when I can.
When I was a kid, my mom tried to teach me the strategy of “when you’re angry, count to 10 before you do anything.” I couldn’t use the strategy because when I was actually angry, I wouldn’t remember the strategy existed.
Thus, we ironically forget to take stimulant medication for the very reasons we need it in the first place!
8. A double bind: We need habits to function, but have trouble making them.
Because we can’t “remember to remember,” we have trouble making new habits. We can’t consistently remember the habit at the time we’re supposed to do it.
That’s a problem because habits make everything easier for us.
When tasks are automatic, we don’t have to make decisions and use executive functions--the things people with ADHD struggle with most.
9. We can’t process visual clutter well.
In everyday terms, “visual clutter” is when there’s so many objects with so many colors, textures, and shapes that all your brain stops seeing any of the things. All it sees is an undifferentiated mass of “stuff.”
Researchers have a slightly different definition of clutter, measuring small decreases in response time and accuracy rather than the experience of “objects turning into a mass of stuff.” But they find that neurotypicals have trouble processing visual clutter, too.
People with ADHD just have more difficulty processing clutter in everyday life, produce more of it, and have more difficulty cleaning it up.
10. It’s hard to remind ourselves to do things without creating visual clutter.
Some people mistakenly think putting post-its everywhere will solve our “remembering to remember” problems--even people with ADHD.
But too many post-its become visual clutter.
We might stop looking at them to protect ourselves from being overwhelmed.
Or, we might be so overloaded by clutter that we look right at them and don’t register their existence.
Visual clutter paradoxes apply to more than just post-it notes.
If objects in my home aren’t visible, I forget that they exist. They don’t even need to be in the back of a closet; they can be in an opaque drawer or even a shelf I don’t use all the time. I even forget about food in the back of the refrigerator sometimes.
So, you would think I need to make all my things visible. But then I still can’t see them, because they just look like clutter.
(You would think the solution would be to get rid of most of my stuff. But the decisions involved would take hours and leave me exhausted. Remember, clutter is just un-made decisions).
11. Organizing our lives is harder for us than for most people because we keep running into double binds.
We’ve just discussed some double binds people with ADHD run into when they try to organize themselves:
We need habits, but have trouble making them.
We need visual reminders, but too many of them just turns into clutter we can’t process.
We only remember what we own if it’s visible, but we can’t process any of our things if too many are visible.
We need to own few objects so as to avoid clutter, but it takes a difficult, exhausting amount of executive function to get rid of extra stuff.
As a result:
We often put huge amounts of effort into making our time and space organized, and still fail.
Most ADHD adults research, invent, and tinker with organizational systems our whole lives. Most don’t work because of these double binds, and we keep changing or replacing them. This can look, or be, inefficient.
Well-meaning advice from well-meaning friends, family, and coworkers doesn’t work and leaves everyone frustrated.
Even advice from professional organizers and life coaches might not work well if they aren’t trained in dealing with the double binds created by ADHD.
12. Look at both extremes.
Some of us can multitask well, but are terrible at focusing on one thing. Some, like me, are the opposite.
Some of us feel stifled by structure, while others, like me, try to plan everything in advance. The first type of person fits many people’s stereotypes of ADHD people as “spontaneous” and “disorganized.” But because of ADHD, I rely on routines and schedules to function.
Some of us have IQ in the “gifted range” (top 2% or so), while others have low IQ and severe developmental delays (children who are born prematurely, get lead poisoning, or have fetal alcohol syndrome often have ADHD).
Some of us can see the big picture brilliantly, but miss many important details. Others focus intensely on the details but lose the big picture. Others, like me, can do either, but not both at once.
Some of us are artists, some are scientists, some are both.
We can be the best students or the worst.
We can be social butterflies or socially awkward penguins.
13. We’re consistently inconsistent.
Our functioning is inconsistent from day to day and even moment to moment. Not surprisingly, we fear that others will fire us or reject us because we’re unreliable.
But also, we may feel that we can’t rely on ourselves. This diminishes our confidence, motivation, and self-esteem.
If we feel unable to rely on ourselves, we might feel that we have to rely on other people. We might resent our dependence, and fear that if we mess up one too many times, they will leave us.
Research calls our inconsistency “intra-individual variability.” Ironically, they find that inconsistency ranks among the most consistently observed ADHD traits.
14. When life gets hard, we can stop being able to do things we “know how” to do.
When our lives are going well and the people in our lives support us, we often function well in school, at work, and in our relationships. Some of us do so well that our ADHD is invisible.
But when difficult life transitions happen, some of us seem to suddenly fall apart. I call this “hitting the wall,” and Laurie Dupar calls it a “tipping point.”
Basically, we can no longer compensate for our disabilities, because we no longer have the time or energy to use the strategies that worked for us in the past. In fact, our old strategies might even be counterproductive. Our ADHD traits become more obvious, and we stop being able to do things we could before.
Common tipping points include:
going to college
being promoted at work
marrying
having a baby
going through menopause.
ADHD can turn even the joyous milestones of life into a struggle.
15. Many of us develop anxiety.
More than half of us develop anxiety.
We’re prone to overthinking, and may have trouble controlling our thoughts.
We have to worry about others misunderstanding us and calling us lazy, stupid, flaky, or rude.
We are inconsistent, and worry about the effects on ourselves and others.
Some of us develop an exhausting habit of “constant vigilance” to avoid making ADHD mistakes like losing things, forgetting belongings, running late, math/writing errors, etc.
16. We usually have other conditions along with ADHD.
People with ADHD are more likely to...
Have other developmental disabilities, such as autism.
Have learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, dyscaluclia, or nonverbal learning disability.
Have difficulties with sensory and motor processing, such as sensory processing disorder and dyspraxia.
Develop mental illnesses, including depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and bipolar disorder.
Have certain physical and neurological disorders, such as tics/Tourette’s syndrome or night-time bedwetting ( “enuresis”) into late childhood or adolescence.
As children, exhibit behavioral problems, which may be diagnosed as so-called “oppositional defiant disorder.”
Self-medicate to the point of developing substance abuse, such as alcohol or nicotine dependence.
Personally, I believe that our difficulties with self-regulation go way beyond high-level abilities like executive function.
We have difficulty regulating even the most primitive brain functions (such as maintaining alertness). Some of us even have difficulty maintaining homeostasis of bodily functions.
For example, I overreact to small changes in light, atmospheric pressure, temperature, blood sugar, hunger, thirst, or sleep, with migraines, pain, fatigue, irritability, and difficulty thinking and moving quickly.
Difficulties regulating sleep, including falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking up well-rested, correlate with and probably explain some ADHD symptoms.
(For this reason, anyone evaluating someone for ADHD should always inquire about sleep, because some people may look like they have ADHD when they don’t purely because of chronic lack of sleep! But people with ADHD also often have sleep difficulties).
In other words, if someone has ADHD, they probably also have disabilities or difficulties with self-regulation that affect other areas of life.
17. Our family members are likely to have ADHD or autism, diagnosed or otherwise.
Many people report being diagnosed with ADHD after their own children were diagnosed.
ADHD is highly heritable, meaning that it’s highly likely that someone with ADHD traits will have children, and parents, with similar traits.
The same genes can also predispose someone to both ADHD and autism. So families that contain autistic people often contain people with ADHD, and vice versa. My own family is one of these.
18. Not everyone with ADHD views their condition the same way.
Some of us see ADHD as uniformly disabling. They believe it prevents us from using our talents and passions.
Others see ADHD as a gift that must be managed.
People with each of these viewpoints sometimes see the opposite as harmful to people with ADHD.
Still others view ADHD as a trait like any other, which can have positive or negative effects depending on how one chooses to use it and whether it fits the environment.
Personally, I see ADHD, in general, as a set of traits. However, I see my own as mostly negative. I like my creativity and ability to hyperfocus. However, I believe my ADHD traits interfere with using my talents, and would be impairing in any environment. (What benefit could inconsistency and self-regulation difficulties possibly have, in any environment?) But there are environments where my ADHD traits would be less disabling, and I’m trying to find and create them.
19. ADHD can be a serious disability.
On the surface, ADHD looks like something “everyone deals with.” But as this list suggests, it can cause serious problems in school, work, and relationships.
The large-scale MTA study followed hundreds of girls and boys with ADHD into adulthood, and found the following outcomes:
Higher rates of self-injury and mental illness
More adolescent substance use
More eating disorders
Poorer relationships with peers in adolescence
Poorer relationships with parents and partners in young adulthood
ADHD has also been linked to:
Lower test performance
Poorer education and work performance
Greater risk of accidents
Obesity
Researchers and the media tend to describe these problems as the result of ADHD traits themselves, especially impulsivity.
But I believe the way we treat people with ADHD has a lot to do with the bad outcomes.
Many of us, especially those diagnosed late in life, develop crippling shame and self-hatred. This alone can lead to poor school performance, mental illness, substance abuse, relationship difficulties, and underachievement at work.
20. But people with ADHD are awesome!
People with ADHD can be creative, energetic, passionate, thoughtful, smart, academically skilled, empathetic, spontaneous, entrepreneurial, and more.
Famous people in every walk of life have diagnosed ADHD, and many past geniuses had traits.
Like other disabilities, ADHD colors how we experience and act in the world, and it adds unique struggles to our lives. But ADHD does not diminish us or make us less human.

Converting Your Bedroom into a College Experience
We’re packing up and going to college! Well, without the packing up. You’ve gotten the high school diploma, and now it’s time to start a new chapter. This might seem trickier if you have chosen to stay home for school. But it actually starts with your room.
The vibe of your space can subconsciously change your mood and attitude. So, find new ways to transform your childhood bedroom into a space fit for a college student. Here are some tips to get you started on your at-home dorm room!
Change Your Palette
A blank canvas for a new space starts with the canvas of your room, the walls! Giving your walls a fresh coat of paint can be a huge step in transitioning your room into a DIY dorm. As a kid, you loved the idea of covering the four walls of your bedroom in your favorite color, but now you feel like you’ve outgrown the look. Whether it’s hot pink, bright robin’s egg blue or a dark navy, it’s time for new paint. (In truthfulness, I had yellow walls in my childhood bedroom, so we’ve all been there.)
An off-white or light, neutral gray can help open things up. These colors can give the appearance of a larger room to make things feel less cramped. (Which is definitely a bonus over traditional door rooms.) This change gives you the freedom to explore the use of colors and tones throughout the space. Having a commanding accent color on all four walls does not give you a lot of room to play with things like area rugs, throw pillows and wall art.
Bedding Refresh
Start this chapter by making your bed, literally! A new set of cozy sheets will help you unwind after a long day of studying, lectures and note-taking. Your mind is not only absorbing copious amounts of information, but you are also navigating a new stage in your life, which can be exhausting. Create a bedroom that keeps you focused for school, but also helps you recharge in order to be the best young scholar you can be!
Keep your bedding neutral to give yourself more flexibility in accents that catch the eye. If you want to add subtle dimension, try a style with a monochrome pattern. Complete the set up with a plush throw blanket that also adds a pop of color!
Decorate with Wall Art
Now that you’ve given your walls a fresh new color, decorate them with beautiful art! For those of you who are not moving into a dorm this fall, experiment by building a gallery wall. Unlike students in residence halls, you can drill holes to hang your favorite prints, posters and framed pieces. This small change in your décor will give your room a more mature vibe. And although we loved our boy band posters and botched magazine collages, it’s time to step things up. One Direction will understand.
Studying at Club Lib
When creating a productive study space in your bedroom, think of two essentials; the workspace and the lighting. Depending on your course curriculum, study habits are going to be much different than they were in high school. Ensure your ability to ace every exam by dedicating a space in your bedroom to just school work. Doing homework from your bed may impact your sleep schedule, impeding your ability to excel during the day.
Pick out a desk with ample room for textbooks, study materials and coursework. Add a table lamp that keeps things bright and helps you stay alert. Our brain is affected by light and uses it as an indicator of needing to stay awake or getting ready for sleep. So, don’t study in a dimly-lit room!
Simple Changes Make a Huge Difference
This transition from high schooler to college-bound adult doesn’t have to be as extreme as you think. Home décor accents have a large impact on the look of your bedroom, so start small and see how you feel. Here are our recommendations:
Fake Foliage
If you are not ready for the responsibility of caring for a plant, try a fake one! An artificial version will still give you the vibrant green color in your space, without the maintenance! Depending on your style, dress it up with a patterned pot or keep things minimal with a neutral option. The pretend plant you pick can also vary on your available space. Snake plants are compact and can fit anywhere. Palms create a tropical vibe, even if you live in the Midwest. And a pothos can add visual interest when placed on a high floating shelf.
Storage Made Smart
Invest in efficient storage for all of your belongings. Depending on your needs, this could be a sleek filing cabinet, an accent piece or just a bed frame with sneaky storage drawers. Removing clutter from the space will help you feel more organized in all aspects of your life. And your newly neat “college bedroom” will be a better place for relaxing at the end of the day. The same goes for traditional dorm rooms, storage is an essential to maximizing your space.
Setting Up New Rules
The transition to college life doesn’t just end with a new look for your bedroom. Choosing to stay at home was a great step for your future and your education. Have a conversation with your family about what this new chapter means for everyone. You are a young adult on your own journey, and that should be recognized and supported! Although it’s important to respect the rules of the household, express your need for new rules.
And this new-found independence should work for the entire family. If you are asking for more freedom, you should also accept more responsibility. Offer to help with chores like preparing dinner, shopping for the groceries or doing the laundry. These small steps are actions towards adulthood, and will help your whole family with this transition.

TOP TECHNIQUES TO REMEMBER EFFECTIVELY WELL.
How to Remember Things: 21 Techniques for Memory Improvement So … you want to know how to remember things. Excellent. You’re in the right place. I read every book on the topic I can find. And I am always looking to improve my own memory skills. Here’s a simple fact about improving your memory: People with excellent memories and memory championship winners are not too different from you. They just use a combination of techniques to enable their minds to memorize things. You might find it hard to remember names, facts, equations, lists, tasks you need to take care of, a new language and so on. But if you follow the right techniques, you can remember almost anything you want. Th techniques you’ll discover on this page will work for you, no matter how bad you think your memory is. In this article, I will show you a number of techniques that will help you understand: How to remember things you read How to remember names How to remember lists and things you need to do How to memorize things faster How to remember things you have forgotten … and so on. There are dozens of techniques for memory improvement, but they can be classified into three approaches: Mnemonics for Memory Improvement Lifestyle Changes For Memory Improvement Other Memory Methods for Improvement Let’s take a look at each. You can read or enjoy this video version of the text by clicking “play” and eliminating all distractions: How To Remember Things With Mnemonics Mnemonics are memory techniques that help you to remember things better. They are also the most effective for forming strong long term memories. Here are a few of the most common mnemonic devices: 1. Memory Palaces The Memory Palace is the most powerful mnemonic device ever formulated. If you are a fan of ‘Sherlock’ – the BBC series, you have seen Sherlock Holmes use his ‘mind palace’ to remember practically everything. This memorization method isn’t just used by fictional detectives. Memory champions swear by the memory palace. The mnemonic device, also referred to as the ‘Method of Loci’ or ‘Cicero Method’ was developed in Ancient Greece. How does it work? The fundamental concept of the Memory Palace Technique is to associate pieces of information that you wish to remember with parts of a location that you are very familiar with. This location can be your home. This memorization method begins by visualizing yourself walking through your home and remembering every single detail that you can. It’s also a great mental exercise. However, you necessarily do not need to visualize, and can physically walk through your home too. In fact, the idea of the memory palace is to make use of all your senses – auditory, kinesthetic (touch) and so on. Associate each item that you with to remember with a specific object or space in your home. For example, if you are trying to remember a new language, you might want to store all the words related to weather in your wardrobe. Associating items within your mind with a real physical space helps your brain ‘file’ important things to remember more easily. Memory Palaces can be used to remember names, faces, languages, lists, academic material and pretty much anything under the sun. I talk about the Memory Palace in more detail in this article. 2. Spaced Repetition It’s easier to remember something that you read yesterday than a paragraph you have read a year back. Hermann Ebbinghaus referred to this as the forgetting curve. His research into the psychology of memory observed that we forget most newly acquired information within a few hours or at the most days. However, if you reinforce what you learn at regular intervals, it’s easier to retain that piece of information from the long-term storage areas of your brain. The spaced repetition method is all about practicing remembering at the right time. You do that by reinforcing a bit of information in your mind just when you are about to forget it. A simple way of applying this technique is to use flashcards. You can organize your flashcards into three batches depending on how easy it is for you to remember. If you remember something clearly, test yourself with the same flashcard within ten minutes, but if you do remember, test yourself at a longer interval. There are several tools out there which claim to be spaced repetition software, but which are actually not. If you wish to try out spaced repetition, the best approach is to make your own flashcards. 3. Use Chunking to Remember Chunking is the process of clubbing things together into groups. For instance, you could try remembering your grocery list according to each shelf in the store. Or when you are learning a new language, learn words that are related by a strong context, such as breakfast food items, winter clothing and so on. The human brain naturally tends to look for patterns, and chunking allows the brain to store information in easy-to-remember packets. Here are 21 more study tips related to chunking, some of which are a bit unconventional. 4. Expression Mnemonics or Acronyms You have probably come across this method in school. You create an acronym of the different things that you wish to remember. If you have taken music lessons, you would remember EGBDF (the treble clef) with the acronym, “Every Good Boy Does Fine.” Another common expression mnemonic you might remember from your school days is HOMES – for the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior). Acronyms are difficult to forget! There are similar Expression Mnemonics which involve rhymes, songs and so on. 5. Remembering Numbers with The Major System The Major System is also called the Major Method or is sometimes referred to as Harry Lorayne’s Number Mnemonics. It works by associating a number with a sound. Like this: 0 = soft c, s or z 1 = d, t 2 = n 3 = m 4 = r … and so on (see diagram for the full list.) You use this simple formula by forming words with these numbers. For instance 22 could be nun (formed by combining n and n). You combine these words to visualize an animated sequence of activities, which makes it difficult for you to forget! The method can be used to memorize long digits, multiplication tables, phone numbers, number-based passwords and so on. 6. Using the NAME Acronym to Remember Things The NAME acronym is a process used to remember names. However, you can use it to remember other things too. This is based on an interesting book I read recently – Boost Your Memory by Darren Bridger. For those of you who are seriously into memorization and mastering how to remember things you forgot, it’s a worthy read. Even if you’re already well establish, I suggest reading it for a quick review of the major principles that support how to remember things. Notice Notice is the first word in the name acronym. In this case, the author is talking about not only about how to remember things like names by noticing the person’s hair, eye color and other distinct features of the face. He’s also talking about noticing the sound the sound of the name as part of learning how to remembering things better. Seriously. Notice how the names you want to remember sound. Even a seemingly pedestrian name like “Bill” becomes quite interesting if you think about it. You can even go so far as to pretend in your mind that you’ve never heard the word before. Just as we want to pay close attention to the sound of the words we are memorizing using the Magnetic Memory Method, when we learn a person’s name, we want to swirl it around a bit. It’s almost like testing wine. That’s kind of a weird way to think about learning someone’s name, but I’ve tried it out many times, and it actually does bring an interesting quality to the memorization process. Ask And You Shall Remember Ask is the second word in this powerful acronym that teaches you how to remember names or even how to remember things for a test. In the case of names, Bridger is suggesting that we ask for the name to be repeated if we haven’t heard it the first time. I’m sure you’ve had this experience: You hear someone’s name, but don’t quite catch it. Instead of asking for it to be repeated, you let the name issue drop and hope it will come up again … But It Never Does! And so, as Bridger suggests, there’s no shame in asking for a name to be repeated. But I would like to add to the act of asking a quick tip: If you want to know how to remembering things better, start asking people about their names. Like this: “That’s an interesting name. Where does it come from?” These are perfect questions to ask a person. Questions like these will not only increase your rapport with the person, but also cause you to pay more attention to the name in the first place. Remember: a great deal of what knowing how to remembering things boils down to is noticing and paying attention to the target material. Mention to Help Remember Things The author uses the word “mention” for the purposes of his acronym, but usually tips on memorizing names tell us to repeat the name we’ve just heard. Memory experts are actually divided on this point. Yes, it helps the name you want to remember sink into your memory. And yes, it tells the person that you’ve heard their name and that you care about knowing them. But it can still come off as rather corny. Still, I spend a lot of time in places where the language is not my native tongue, and have found repeating the names of people I meet to be an essential habit. Pronunciations of names vary widely, and there are often subtle sounds that people will gladly correct for you once they’ve heard you mispronounce their name. It’s only polite to make sure you can pronounce a person’s name right. Plus, pronunciation is one of the weakest points for me. I’m always working on improving it in my own memory improvement journey – largely due to being 80% deaf in my left ear. Even though it can be a bit corny to repeat the names of people you’ve just met, just do it. Taking that simple step when it comes to how to remember things like names is worth it in the end. Envision Here Bridger finally shows us how to bring it all together. Envisioning is simple. It’s the part of the mnemonic process where we take the visual characteristics of a face and associate the name of the person with some distinct feature. To use Bridger’s teaching, which seems pulled straight out of Harry Lorayne, let’s say I meet someone named Jacob and he has rather bird-like features. All I would need to do is imagine him having the face of a Blue Jay and then imagine him puffing on a corn cob pipe. (Jay + Cob = Jacob). Simple stuff. The only problem is … I don’t like doing it this way. I find that it makes me look at the person strangely later as I’m going through the recall process. I prefer seeing the images I create either behind the person, on their shoulder or above their head. That way, when recalling their name, I’m not looking all screwy eyed at them. The Missing Memory Step Plus, there’s a missing step when it comes to truly knowing how to remember things. “Envisioning” is one thing. Having a place to find what you envisioned quite another. That’s why I’ve had at times dedicated Memory Palaces just for names. If I meet a person named Jacob and see him as a Blue Jay smoking a corn cob pipe. But I don’t want to let the association just float around in the void. I want to Magnetize it somewhere. To do that, I put the Magnetic Imagery in a Memory Palace. Later, when I want to recall his name, the association will come much faster than it would have otherwise. Why? Because memory no longer needs to hunt for the association or “envisioned” information. When we associate without placing our associations somewhere, we often have an “uhhhhhhm” moment where we’re searching for the association we know that we’ve created. Plus, without a Memory Palace, we have no means of performing Recall Rehearsal. We will find the imagery in our Memory Palace later, but still have to reverse-engineer it in order to get the target material. If you want to know how to remember things, that’s the key: always locate your material somewhere and then use that Memory Palace to rehearse the information into long term memory. How To Remember Things Through Lifestyle Changes Your lifestyle and habits have a significant impact on your memory. These are not memory techniques. However, implementing these lifestyle changes will boost your overall ability to remember things. 7. Getting Adequate Sleep will Help you Remember Things One of the biggest mistakes that students make is trying to study longer hours by skipping on sleep. What they forget is that sleep deprivation affects several cognitive abilities, including memory. This should hardly be a surprise. In addition to affecting the mind, lack of sleep is also considered to be a risk factor for heart disease, cancer, diminished immunity, obesity and several other complications. Numerous studies have established that sleep helps in the second stage of memory – consolidation. And there’s no doubt about it: Sleep helps in recalling facts and information as well as in procedural memory formation – the aspect of memory involved in learning new skills faster (Diekelmann and Born, 2010) And there’s more to it. Sleep also contributes to reorganizing memories, by forming stronger connections between different memories. Sleep helps the brain to link newly absorbed information with previously acquired information, which spurs creativity (Diekelmann and Born, 2010) Other studies have indicated that lack of sleep also makes us remember things incorrectly (Diekelmann 2008). Therefore, for several reasons, getting a good night’s sleep can significantly contribute to memory improvement. 8. Taking Naps will Improve Your Memory What if you are unable to get adequate sleep? Try taking naps. David Dinges (University of Pennsylvania) concluded from sleep experiments supported by NASA that naps help in boosting working memory. Dinges also says that working memory “involves focusing attention on one task while holding other tasks in memory … and is a fundamental ability critical to performing complex work.” Another study concluded that a nap as short as six minutes can help boost memory (Lahl et al 2008) 9. Foods that Boost Your Memory When we talk about diet, the conversation is usually about weight loss, improving immunity or preventing diseases. However, what we eat also has an effect on memory improvement. There are several foods that are great for memory such as walnuts, green tea, blueberries, fish, whole grains, olive oil, etc. – often referred to as the Mediterranean diet. Studies have demonstrated that consumption of green tea leads to enhanced activity in the brain’s prefrontal cortex (Schimdt et al 3888). This optimization leads to improved memory and better cognition overall (Feng et al 438). Fish, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, oysters are all excellent sources of Omega-3s, which lowers risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s by as much as 47% (Schaefer et al 1545). Incidentally, the Mediterranean diet is also recommended for preventing cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc. Therefore, there are plenty of reasons besides memory improvement to include these foods in your diet! You should also avoid foods that contain too much saturated fats and trans-fats such as red meat, butter, etc. Foods that cause cholesterol leading to heart attack or stroke also lead to memory impairment. 10. Exercising Leads to Memory Improvement Exercising is another great way of improving your memory. It’s well known that exercise leads to increased blood flow to the brain, which has several cognitive benefits, such as alertness, better concentration, more positive mood and so on. Exercising also improves memory by releasing cathepsin B. It’s a protein which triggers the growth of neurons and forms new connections in the hippocampus, a section of the brain playing a vital role in memory. Memory improvement necessarily doesn’t require rigorous exercise. Just 150 minutes of walking every week has been known to improve memory. 11. Socializing for Stronger Memories Australian researchers conducted a study involving 700 participants over 15 years. The researchers concluded that maintaining close relationships helps in improving memory. Other studies have also indicated that socializing helps prevent memory loss through dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Since better relationships are also linked to happiness and improvement in a number of heath parameters, it’s a great reason to invest more in your current relationships as well as get back in touch with people you haven’t spoken to for years. 12. New Stimulating Hobbies Will Improve Your Memory Columbia University researchers have found that people having more than six hobbies have a 38% lower chance of developing dementia. Researchers at Berkeley, California also found that people who regularly engage in activities that stimulate their brains avoid the formation of a protein that causes Alzheimer’s. They key is to pick up new hobbies that force you to expand the capabilities of your mind. For example, you could: Read a book in a topic that you are completely unfamiliar with Learning a new musical instrument or a new dance form Pick up a new form of exercise, Regularly meet new people The key here is to engage in activities that lead to the formation of new neurons in the brain as well as new connections between existing neurons. This helps maintain the brain’s cognitive reserve – it’s ability to avoid memory loss. 13. Learning a New Language Boosts Memory There are several reasons why learning a new language is great for memory. The process of remembering vocabulary, phrases and grammar rules all exercise your brain cells. Mental exercise like this leads to overall memory improvement. Studies have indicated that bilingual people are at less risk of Alzheimer’s. You also develop renewed curiosity about everything around you, which helps you to focus more on everyday activities and objects. As I have pointed out earlier, focus is another factor that helps us to remember things better. Learning how to remember things is an essential skill that you have to pick up while learning any new language. When you are actively looking for ways to remember, you pick up lots of memory improvement techniques – which in turn improve your memory. It’s a cycle that helps you to keep improving continuously. So why not spend a few minutes every day in brushing up your French or Spanish or pick up a completely new language like Mandarin! 14. Do More Challenging Work Studies have found that people who do more mentally challenging work are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s. Working on things that are mentally taxing keeps your neurons on their toes and prevent them from deteriorating over time. If you are in a job you find boring, if changing careers is not an option, developing better memory and a healthier brain is its own reward. You could also ask your boss to give you additional responsibilities every day that place you out of your comfort zone – so that your cognitive abilities stay in peak shape. 15. Positivity Promotes Memory Improvement A 2012 study indicated that feelings of positivity have a beneficial effect on remembering things in case of older adults. Positive thinking and happiness are believed to trigger the release of dopamine in the memory-related regions of the brain, which stimulates memory formation and retention. Try to engage in activities that make you happy. It can be as simple as setting aside 10 minutes a day to revive a hobby that you used to enjoy, such as reading or singing. You can also practice positive visualization or meditation. Both of these activities reduce stress and release dopamine in the brain. Practicing gratitude also makes us happier and helps improve our memories. 16. Meditation for Memory Meditation is the most effective way of improving the ability of our mind to pay attention to tasks – which is important for improving retention and converting a short term memory into a long term memory. Studies have demonstrated that practicing meditation improves our ability to focus on smaller details. (Maclean et al. 2010). Other studies have shown that mindfulness meditation works better as a memory improvement technique than yoga. (Quach et al 2015). Building a habit of meditating every day isn’t too hard. My article on meditation and memory will give you the basics that you need to know. What if the thought of sitting still for even a couple of minutes is too painful? Try walking meditation. Lots of people find this approach far easier than the regular sitting meditation approach, and as effective as calming the mind. Other Techniques To Remember Things Improving your memory is also possible by approaching the process of learning something new a bit differently. Making these small additional changes can go a long way in helping you remember things. 17. Learn in the Afternoon Research indicates that the afternoon is the best time to study to maximize recall, not necessarily when you are feeling the most alert. If your work involves any sort of learning, try to schedule it during the afternoon hours. 18. Recall Before Writing Everyone remembers how school teachers asked us to write things down to help us remember. Adding a step to this age-old practice helps us remember things even better. If you just mechanically write something down, you are likely to forget it soon. Actively recall each item you wish to remember and then write it, as opposed to just copying something without thinking about it. Repeating this process multiple times is great for adding things to your long-term memory. A useful hack to remember things that you read is to summarize a page or a paragraph in the margin of the book as you read along. This reinforces absorption into your memory, as well as help you quickly remember the contents of the page when you look it up in future. Finally, remember that writing something down is far more effective than typing it out, because it helps you pay more attention to the moment. The reticular activating system is a section of your brain that gets stimulated when you do something with higher levels of alertness, and lowers your chance of forgetting things. 19. Be More Interested It’s always easier to remember things that we are interested in. For instance, you might find it far easy to remember personal details of your favorite celebrity, but you tend to forget historical facts or the names of your in-laws friends! But how do you apply this memory improvement technique to areas that you are not so interested in? By actively trying to find reasons to be interested. Remind yourself regularly about why it’s important to remember – how will it contribute to your personal or professional life? That will signal to your brain the importance of the topic and it will dedicate more resources to strengthening neurons that reinforce those memories. 20. Pay More Attention Out of all the techniques on how to remember things, this might be the most effective. Researchers from MIT have identified a neural circuit in the human brain that helps in forming long-term memories. This circuit works best when your mind pays close attention to the task at hand. Essentially, higher concentration automatically leads to better absorption in the brain and helps in converting short term memories into long term memories. Unfortunately, concentration is becoming an increasingly rare trait in a world where people are bombarded with an infinite number of distractions from multiple digital devices, and multitasking is the norm. However, there are two simple steps that will help improve your concentration – and hence boost your memory. First, gradually reducing the use of digital devices will improve your attention span and free you from Digital Amnesia. Next, try doing one thing at a time and avoid switching between tasks every few minutes. Simply building these two habits will help you to remember things more easily. 21. Visualizing Helps You Remember A simple way of remembering tasks that you need to do is by visualizing yourself doing that action. This is especially useful when you don’t have a notepad or a to-do list app with you right away, or if the process of noting down a task is too cumbersome. This is useful in several situations, but here are the two most common ones. The first is in the middle of a conversation. Paying complete attention to someone speaking, is also a positive step in building rapport and whipping out your phone to note down a task can be a distraction. The second is remembering where you have kept something, like your glasses. Quickly visualizing it will help you recall where it is. Visualizing to remember things doesn’t eliminate the need for a to-do list, but it serves as a useful complement. Remembering Things Isn’t Hard! We have covered a wide range of methods that will help you to remember. You don’t need to practice all of them. Just picking up a few of these techniques will make a substantial difference to your memory. And what if you wanted to learn just one method that will make a huge difference to your memory? Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies

Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies – Soft, chewy, adorable little MINI cookies that are a hit with everyone!! Fast and easy! Bet you can’t eat just one!!
I have so many recipes for chocolate chip cookies but until now had not made mini chocolate chip cookies.
What was I waiting for because these are so good. Mini food has a way of tasting better. And they’re so cute if I do say so myself.
MY OTHER RECIPES
The cookies are begging to be washed down with a Horizon Organic Lowfat Plain Milk Box. There’s something about the classic combination of cookies and milk that you just can’t beat.
Perfect For Snacks and Lunchboxes
The milk boxes (and the cookies) are great for lunchboxes, snacks, travel, and more. These shelf-stable milk boxes are a perfect alternative to juice boxes and are handy for school lunches or afternoon snacks.
Now that school is back in session, I am always trying to find healthy, organic choices for my daughter’s school lunches that she enjoys and that don’t need refrigeration.
A milk box and a few cookies are a perfect little treat to pack in lunches or as an after school snack before homework and sports practice begins.
What Do The Cookies Taste Like
I adapted an older recipe for Chocolate Chip and Chunk Cookies that never disappoints to make the mini cookies.
The cookies are pillowy soft in the center and have just the right amount of chewiness with plenty of melted chocolate. I recommend using mini chocolate chips rather than normal size for better chocolate distribution.
Tips For Mini Cookie Success
I also recommend using a mini 1/2 tablespoon cookie scoop so that your cookies turn out uniformly. It also makes the work of forming the dough mounds much, much faster than doing it by hand or by guesswork.
Be sure not to overbake these little cuties so that they stay soft and chewy rather than crunchy. All ovens vary but just under 6 minutes was perfect in my oven. Check early and often since they are so small.
And don’t forget to wipe off your milk mustache. Ahhh, so good.
Here’s a video showing you just how I make the cookies.

Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies – Soft, chewy, adorable little MINI cookies that are a hit with everyone!! Fast and easy! Bet you can’t eat just one!!
Ingredients:
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) Horizon Organic unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup organic light brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup organic granulated sugar
1 Horizon Organic Large Egg
2 teaspoons organic vanilla extract
2 cups organic all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons organic cornstarch
1 teaspoon organic baking soda
1/2 teaspoon organic salt, or to taste
1 3/4 cups organic mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, plus more for sprinkling the tops if desired
Horizon Organic Lowfat Plain Milk Boxes, for serving
Directions:
To the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or large bowl and electric handheld mixer, beat the butter on low speed until smooth, about 1 minute.
Add the sugars and beat on medium-high speed until creamed and well combined, about 2 to 3 minutes.
Stop, scrape down the sides of the bowl, and add the egg, vanilla, and beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
Stop, scrape down the sides of the bowl, and add the flour, corn starch, baking soda, salt, and mix until just combined, about 30 seconds.
Add the chocolate chips and beat for a few seconds on low speed to incorporate.
Using a mini 1/2 tablespoon cookie scoop, form mounds and place them on a large plate or tray, lightly smoosh the mounds down a slight amount, cover with plasticwrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, up to 5 days.
Preheat oven to 350F, line a baking sheet with a Silpat Non-Stick Baking Mat, parchment, or spray with cooking spray. Place dough mounds on the baking sheet, spaced at least 1 inch apart; I bake 15 to 20 cookies per half sheet pan. Bake for about 5 to 6 minutes, or until barely golden brown around the edges, even if slightly undercooked in the center, noting the tops will not be browned and will be pale.
Optionally, after cookies emerge from the oven, add a few more chocolate chips to the top of each cookie for visual appeal.
Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing and transferring to a rack to finish cooling before serving with milk. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Alternatively, unbaked cookie dough can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months, so consider baking only as many cookies as desired and save the remaining dough to be baked in the future when desired.

Making The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up Work for Real Moms
New Post has been published on http://healingawerness.com/news/making-the-life-changing-magic-of-tidying-up-work-for-real-moms/
Making The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up Work for Real Moms
As a homeschooling mom and small business owner, I know what it’s like to be busy. You probably do too. Between kids’ events and activities, work, and keeping up with household responsibilities, moms have a lot of plates spinning. (I know, newsflash of the year.) I’m guessing I’m not alone in feeling like house cleaning is usually the first thing to suffer when something needs to go.
Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably heard of the book (and show) The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Every mom I know has a copy on their shelf, and it is a great little book and one that was a game-changer for me personally.
Still, there’s no denying that this method seems impractical… even laughable… when you apply it to family life. Teaching my kids to fold their laundry so it stands up? Or to lovingly touch each toy and decide if they want to give it away? (I can guess that answer.) What if I can’t even find two matching socks let alone roll them?!
Luckily, you can still get a lot of value from the Konmari method even if some aspects of it don’t work for your family.
What Is the Konmari Method?
Marie Kondo, a professional organizer from Japan, teaches a very detailed method for organizing your home. Here are some of the basic tenents:
Purging Is More Important Than Organizing
The Konmari method is not about finding storage solutions. It focuses on getting rid of clutter first and then neatly organizing the small amount that remains.
It’s a Mindset Thing
While this method is about decluttering, the main focus is in helping people acquire a mindset that keeps them from acquiring so much clutter to begin with. Kondo stresses that her clients only need to declutter once. This method also uses visualization to have the end goal in mind while you declutter.
Tidy by Category
Kondo also recommends tidying and decluttering by category instead of by location. So, instead of decluttering your closet, you get all of your clothes from all locations and work on them at one time.
The reasoning is to reduce confusion around decluttering items that are in many different locations.
Kondo also recommends a specific order in which you should declutter (clothes are first) and specific order within those categories (tops first).
Declutter All at Once
Kondo recommends decluttering a category of items in one go instead of in small steps. She says that doing it this way helps clients solidify their mindset against accumulating clutter again. She also recommends beginning with the easy things for a good jumpstart and mindset boost.
Does It Spark Joy?
This method focuses on the things you want to keep instead of the things you want to get rid of. You are supposed to hold everything in your hands and ask yourself if this item sparks joy. If not, you are expected to get rid of it. While holding your items you’re also supposed to talk to them and thank them for their service to you.
It’s an Individual Activity
Kondo says you should tidy without letting your family see you but you should also not get rid of anything belonging to someone else without their permission. Kondo believes that decluttering your own items will inspire your family to do their own decluttering.
The Konnmari Method Is Strict
This is not a tidying method that gives you the wiggle room to make it your own. You’re expected to follow it to a T.
Kondo says that despite different reasons for acquiring clutter, the solution is the same. Kondo even teaches a specific way of folding clothing (pictured above).
How to Make The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up Work for Families
Marie Kondo’s method of tidying and decluttering has changed many people’s lives, but it’s not always practical for families. Here are some tips I’ve personally found helpful and can work even in mom-life:
Ignore Its Strictness
As a general rule for this method to work for families, you’ll have to ignore its strictness. The truth is that when you have kids of varying ages you may have to make adjustments so that the method will work for you. Don’t worry about doing it perfectly. Give yourself permission to focus on the parts that do work for you and don’t worry about the parts that don’t.
You Don’t Have to Declutter in One Fell Swoop
With little ones around it’s hard enough to find any time to declutter, not to mention a long enough block of time where you pile every piece of clothing on the bed and ponder each item. Instead, focus on manageable amounts of a category. That might mean you have to work on the dresser one day and the closet the next. To keep with the spirit of what The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up teaches, keep a list of the items you are keeping from the dresser so you know what can be tossed from the closet.
You Don’t Have to Find Joy in Everything You Keep
There are many items moms have that don’t necessarily spark joy but also can’t be tossed. For example, diapers, wipes, breast pumps, kids’ clothes that don’t fit yet, pacifiers, toys that you don’t like (but your child does), etc.
Instead of thinking only about whether it sparks joy, ask if the object has a purpose and function that makes life easier.
There Is Not One Way of Folding
The Konmari method advocates a specific way of folding, and if it works for you, great! If not, don’t worry about it, use whatever folding works for you. This is one of those times where you don’t want to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. And let’s be honest, some days folding just doesn’t happen at all!
The point of the Konmari mnethod of folding is that you fold and store your clothes so they are visually appealing and easily accessible. If you have another way of folding that does this, go for it!
You Don’t Have to Talk to Your Stuff
While getting really up close and personal with your possessions can help you be more grateful for what you own, you don’t have to talk to your stuff. If it feels silly and doesn’t work for you, let it go. On the other hand, if talking to your possessions does help your mindset around clutter, by all means, continue. If you figure out something else that helps you become more intentional with your possessions, that’s great too.
You Don’t Have to Ask Your Kids’ Permission!
Of course, you should be respectful of your kids’ things but there has to be a limit. I know if I were to ask my kids if I can get rid of a toy (that no one has used for months) it would suddenly become their very favorite toy (for about 10 minutes). Kids, depending on age, may not be able to separate from any of their possessions, even ones they never use. A good way to avoid this is to put into storage a toy you don’t think they will miss. If they don’t miss it after a certain amount of time, then you can get rid of it.
Don’t Be Discouraged When You Need to Declutter Again
Kondo says that her clients never need to declutter again when they use her method. But if you’re a mom, you probably will, and here’s why:
Kids grow fast! They need new clothes and different toys and games regularly. It’s hard to keep up with.
People love giving things to kids (or families with kids). The best advice for staying away from clutter is to refuse it in the first place. But many of us have a hard time doing that when we’re given gifts and hand-me-downs from well-meaning friends and family members. Gently try to guide family members to show love through experiences instead of material gifts, but if that doesn’t work, you can always thank it and let the item(s) go.
Bottom line, it’s an ongoing process when you have kids and the smaller they are (and the more of them you have!) the more stuff they acquire. Don’t be hard on yourself about this one!
If you need some laughter to keep going, I enjoy this one:

Konmari for Real Moms
Marie Kondo has a lot of great ideas that can help anyone, including busy moms, become more organized and maybe even less stressed and overwhelmed. But there are some tactics that just aren’t practical for moms. With some minor adjustments though, the Konmari method can spur lasting change in even the most hectic home.
If you haven’t checked out The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up yet, I highly recommend it and the show is great for inspiration as well!
Maybe Marie wants to come to my house next? 🙂

Designer of the Month: Samuel Phillips
With a background in blacksmithing, jewellery maker Samuel now uses a lot of traditional silversmithing techniques in his work, along with casting and forging, to make a range of simple yet stunning designs. Discover where he gets the inspiration for his pieces from and more in the following interview.
Let us know a bit about yourself, detailing your background, study and training in the jewellery making industry.
My name is Samuel Phillips, a silversmith, jeweller, designer craftsman. Growing up in a coastal village, I was always around my grandfather’s boat building yard and encouraged to build and create, to craft objects from scrap and build things to keep myself entertained. At the age of 16, this was translated into a new medium of hot steel when I began a metalsmithing course at Plumpton College. This also introduced me to my first contact with jewellery making as a part of the course using silver, brass and copper to craft small earrings.
Finishing this course and moving onto university, I quickly found silversmithing and jewellery to be my true passion and managed to achieve a high grade BA (Hons) in Contemporary Design Crafts, specialising in jewellery/silversmithing at Hereford College of Arts in Herefordshire. I decided to head back to my home town to establish myself and start my journey in creating, and have been working for myself and a craftsman and silversmith for just over a year.
Constantly adapting to the requests of customers, I am a jack of all trades, creating one off pieces for private clients, supplying various galleries in the south east and recycling old pieces into new and interesting works for my clients. The joy of creating a wide range of interesting projects is what drives me, always looking for the next technical challenge and striving to achieve the vision of the customer whilst retaining my own aesthetic style.
Tell us about your work – are there any particular materials or techniques that you favour?
I use a lot of traditional silversmithing techniques as a basis for my work, whilst mixing my varied skill sets in to create some more unique shortcuts and visual effects within my work. My experience as a blacksmith gives me more of a specialism in hot work, including casting and forging, which gives me a great advantage in recycling and creating custom silver stock.
My most commonly used techniques at the moment are a few varieties on the classic reticulation of silver. Using purely a torch, the force of the gas and gravity, I create a variety of reticulated earrings with a range of styles by manipulating the molten surface of the material. I’ve also developed a form of reticulation that works with brass from my days at university, creating intricate ridges and textures within the material. Using high heat at a constant temperature and a pick, I can carve gauges and ridges into the surface of the molten brass. It’s a technique that although hard to grasp, is instantly satisfying to the eye.
My most commonly used material is sterling or recycled silver. Its versatility offers me so many possibilities to create with. For texture and tone, I often use an oxidising process combined with minimal cleaning to create visual contrast between blackened silver and a high polished surface. I have also started to work with more and more stones, setting them and creating my own cuts so this is a part of silversmithing I’m focusing on a lot at the moment!
How would you best describe your design style?
My design style is mostly minimalist with some elements of organic and industrial styling.
I tend to think less is more within my work, and by using contrast with finishes you can turn something really simple into a stunning everyday wear piece. My little reticulated studs are an example of this, using oxidised black silver against a polished area creates a really interesting visual. I also use elements of traditional jewellery construction, mainly for private ring commissions. A high polish with delicate stone setting and prongs is a classic look for any bride to be.
My main premise when designing is making something simple that is stunning. With something that has a bold look and a clean finish, every part of the piece matters. The little edges of a stud being polished makes all the difference to me.
As a jewellery maker, where do you like to get your inspiration from for your pieces?
Most of my inspiration comes from my surrounding environment. I live near the south east coast so my materials to draw from are beautiful and immense. I often use line drawing over images to pick out forms and shapes, as well as recreating unique textures from objects I find outside.
A lot of my work begins with an organic form or texture that I then transfer into a contemporary medium or edit to make it tangible. A few of my studs are based on the light gravel and sandy textures from the beaches of rye, others based on small leaves I have found around when walking. All these small objects and environments we walk through every day hold gems of beauty, I just enjoy transferring into something that will be worn and cherished.
I get the most inspiration from clients, each proposal is interesting and different and interpreting the customer’s needs into my own style always creates something unique and interesting. It’s the challenge of it all that is most inspiring!
Do you have a piece that you have made which you favour or are particularly proud of?
The piece I am most proud of is likely my fifth brooch from my university final project. I learnt so much through creating the series of brooches overall, and the smallest one of them was the accumulation of a lot of research and experimentation. This work has continued to inform me and develop my practice into what it is today. It’s delicate and precise and forced me to consider every little bit of the process in depth.
It also informed me of how to problem solve: reticulated brass is no easy task, it’s fickle and likes disintegrate before your eyes. Learning an advanced form of molten carving combined with heat control was so important for me coming out of university. It has since been the bread and butter of my practice, helping me make a variety of products that fuel my craft.
It taught me a lot about myself too, these brooches were drawn from environments with significant emotional meaning and stories – translating these emotions into a physical object was a powerful and striking moment of clarity for me. A piece of jewellery with history and with a significant personal bond is the best kind: a literal interpretation of “wearing your heart on your sleeve”.
What is the one item in your jewellery making workshop that you could not live without?
I couldn’t live without my small hand torch from Cooksongold! I bought it when I first started out making little pendants and rings in my university room and have never had any regrets! Hot enough for most soldering jobs and some tiny castings, it’s a versatile product that has a lovely focused flame perfect for the small details. I use it for making all my earrings and delicate solder joins on more intricate rings. It’s a perfect tool for batch production and for keeping the heat focused in a tight spot.
I’d also say I wouldn’t be much good without my Dremel tool. It’s so multi-purpose and the perfect introduction before committing to a proper flexishaft drill. It does everything from classic drilling to delicate shelf cutting when setting stone and polishing. From start to finish, it’s the go-to tool for rings and everything else!
What upcoming trends do you see being popular soon?
In terms of materials, I have noticed a lot more rose gold and opal going around. I think with the current financial market some people are willing to spend real money on a genuine piece of rose gold and opal, than continually replacing cheaper pieces. I think this is also due to a rise in more social acceptance with facial piercings, rose gold septum clickers and the like are in high demand.
Moissanite stones are also one of my most requested stones now. With its beautiful clarity that mimics a diamond for a fraction of the cost, many people are just as happy with its tone and quality. It also gives younger business a chance to get into more of the wedding/engagement ring market without placing all their money on a single stone.
What is the most valuable lesson you have learnt from your time in the jewellery making industry?
One of the most important lessons was to know when to stop. I had an awful habit of over tinkering with pieces or not leaving them alone. Knowing when to stop, taking a moment and reflect on the issue is key to being successful. Not everything goes perfectly, and when it fails it takes a little willpower to stop yourself for fiddling and tinkering with something best left alone. To reflect and find new ways of dealing with the issue is always the best solution, and a practice that has helped me countless times.
Walk away, have a tea and just contemplate the issue, come back and try something different!
Do you have any particular advice that you would give to up and coming jewellery designers, or someone interested in getting into jewellery making?
I’d say don’t be afraid to ask for what you think you deserve, one of my main problems when starting was not having the confidence to ask for the proper money for the job. Always ask for what you deserve, most customers understand and the ones that don’t can be negotiated with. Part of your job as a jeweller is to explain why it costs what it costs, explain the care and quality of the work and the hard working hours you put into your pieces so they know exactly the level of quality they are paying for. Undercutting yourself is a sure fire way to knock your confidence, whereas completing a great job for a reasonable price fills you with so much pride and prompts you to keep going!
So in all, be confident, be brave with your craft and you’ll do well!
…and finally, time for a bit of fun in our quick fire round! Tell us your favourite…
