How to Prepare for CAT Reading Comprehension [RC] Passages
Reading Comprehension (RC) plays a crucial role in the CAT exam, forming a major portion of the Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) section. Since these passages require a balance of reading speed, comprehension, and logical reasoning, students often find them tough to crack. However, with consistent effort and the right strategy, RC can turn into your strongest scoring area.
Tumblr media
Why Reading Comprehension Is So Important for CAT
To begin with, RC questions typically account for nearly 70% of the VARC section in CAT. This means that mastering RC is not optional, it’s a must. Not only does it test how fast you read, but it also assesses how well you understand what you read.
Moreover, the questions that follow the passages are usually inference-based rather than factual. Therefore, you need to develop skills like critical thinking, identifying tone, evaluating arguments, and eliminating close options.
Build a Strong Reading Habit First
First and foremost, regular reading is the foundation of strong RC skills. Start by reading English newspapers like The Hindu or The Indian Express. Additionally, make it a point to explore articles from global publications like The Economist, Time Magazine, and The Guardian. This broadens your understanding and exposes you to diverse writing styles.
As a result, you’ll start recognizing sentence patterns, complex structures, and unfamiliar words more easily. If you’ve joined any CAT preparation coaching in Delhi NCR, your mentors will likely guide you towards such resources early on.
Understand Common RC Topics
CAT passages often come from subjects such as history, economics, science, politics, literature, and philosophy. While some may seem complex at first, reading frequently on these topics helps you gradually become comfortable with them.
In fact, most good CAT exam coaching in Delhi NCR or CAT courses online in Delhi NCR include reading lists that cover a wide range of genres. Consequently, when you face a tricky passage during the exam, you won’t panic, you’ll be prepared.
Practice with Real CAT-Level RC Passages
In addition to reading, practice is equally important. Start solving RCs from previous years’ CAT papers. Then, move on to sectional tests and mocks. Not only does this improve your accuracy, but it also trains you to handle time pressure effectively.
Furthermore, when you practice under timed conditions, your brain becomes more efficient at processing information. Coaching centers offering CAT preparation coaching in Delhi NCR usually include such practice drills in their weekly routines.
Focus on Comprehension, Not Just Speed
To help with this, pause after each paragraph and mentally summarize the author’s point. This technique, although simple, goes a long way in helping you understand complex passages.
Elimination Is the Secret to Accuracy
It’s quite common to find multiple answer options that seem correct. In such cases, the best strategy is to eliminate the ones that are clearly wrong. Look out for options that are too extreme, go beyond the scope of the passage, or contradict the author’s point of view.
With guidance from expert faculty in CAT preparation coaching in Delhi NCR, you’ll learn how to spot and remove incorrect answers more quickly. Consequently, your accuracy will improve over time.
Don’t Ignore Vocabulary and Sentence Structure
Even though CAT doesn’t directly ask vocabulary-based questions, having a good vocabulary helps you understand RC passages faster. Learn new words daily and revise them regularly. Similarly, understanding sentence structures, especially long or complex ones helps you grasp the meaning more quickly.
Many CAT courses online in Delhi NCR come with built-in vocabulary modules and reading drills to support this part of your preparation.
Review Your Mistakes Regularly
Practicing RCs without reviewing your mistakes is a wasted effort. After every test, analyze which questions you got wrong, and why. Did you misread the passage? Did you misinterpret the tone? Were you confused by similar options?
By doing this regularly, you’ll spot patterns in your mistakes and work on fixing them. Additionally, most CAT exam coaching in Delhi NCR offers detailed feedback on student performance, helping you improve faster.
Manage Your Time Smartly
Time management is another crucial aspect of RC preparation. Ideally, you should spend 6–7 minutes per RC passage, including time to answer the questions. If a passage looks too complex, consider skipping it and coming back to it later.
With regular timed practice, your decision-making will improve. This skill is often taught using mock tests and test simulators provided in CAT courses online in Delhi NCR.
Get Expert Guidance for the Right Strategy
While self-preparation has its own benefits, guided learning from experts can save a lot of time and confusion. At Genius Tutorial, we provide personalized coaching for students through CAT courses online in Delhi NCR.

The Science Behind Speed Reading Techniques
Tumblr media
Neuroscientists remind us that reading is a remarkable ability because our brains never specifically evolved for it.
Reading wasn’t a natural evolutionary skill for our ancestors—it’s something our brains adapted to over time.
This key neuroscientific insight changed how I approach teaching reading improvement.
Unlike walking or talking, reading isn’t hardwired into our neural circuits. It’s a complex cognitive skill that requires dedicated adaptation.
What does this mean for entrepreneurs? Struggling with reading isn’t a personal shortcoming—it’s simply the result of using a brain that wasn’t originally designed for this task.
With the right science-based reading techniques, anyone can significantly enhance their reading ability.

The Science Behind Reading Comprehension
Fascinating research shows that skilled readers don’t just read faster—they process text differently at the brain level.
Here’s what happens neurologically in skilled readers:
Eye Movement Patterns
Researchers such as Keith Rayner used eye-tracking to find clear differences between skilled and unskilled readers:
Fixation time: Slower readers fixate on each word for 300-500 milliseconds; skilled readers average 200-250 milliseconds.
Saccades: Skilled readers make longer jumps between fixations, taking in more text per movement.
Regression rate: Unskilled readers reread words 30-40% of the time; skilled readers only 10-15%.
These findings aren’t just trivia—they provide actionable ways to train more efficient reading patterns.
Neural Activity Differences
Functional MRI scans show striking contrasts:
Skilled readers activate phonological processing areas less, relying less on “sounding out” words.
They have greater activation in visual word form areas, recognizing whole words instantly.
Stronger connectivity exists between language and visual processing regions.
In essence, skilled reading is about brain efficiency—using fewer resources for better comprehension.
Breaking Down Sub-vocalization: What the Research Actually Shows
Sub-vocalization—the inner voice pronouncing words—is often misunderstood in speed reading.
Many programs insist on eliminating it entirely, but research shows a more balanced reality.
Sub-vocalization is natural and even necessary for complex material.
The key is minimizing and streamlining it, not removing it altogether.
Studies measuring vocal cord activity during silent reading found:
Unskilled readers activate their vocal cords more, “speaking” every word internally.
Skilled readers have reduced but present activation, especially with difficult words.
Completely eliminating sub-vocalization reduces comprehension in lab tests.
This explains why some exercises—like counting “one-two” while reading—help: they train the brain to rely less on sub-vocalization without removing it.
The Peripheral Vision Advantage
Peripheral vision training is another exciting frontier.
Skilled readers use peripheral vision to:
Preview words before focusing on them directly.
Process multiple words simultaneously.
Maintain context for better prediction and understanding.
Training can expand peripheral vision by about 42%, making group-word recognition exercises highly effective.
The Scientific Case for Physical Books
Research on digital versus physical reading favors books for deep learning.
A 2009 University of Sussex study found that reading reduces stress by 68% in six minutes—300% more effective than walking.
Reading books activates different neural pathways than screens, including:
Enhanced spatial memory (knowing where info is on the page).
Stronger episodic memory (contextual recall).
Improved tactile memory (linking info to physical sensations).
These aren’t just preferences—they’re measurable brain processing differences.
The Working Memory Connection
Working memory—the ability to hold and manipulate info temporarily—is critical to reading comprehension.
Studies show people with stronger working memory comprehend complex texts better.
The exciting part? Working memory can be improved through targeted exercises.
My method includes:
Teaching entrepreneurs working memory enhancement techniques.
Providing progressive challenges to expand capacity.
Optimizing reading protocols for better information chunking.
Attention and Focus: The Prerequisites to Memory
Memory formation requires focused attention. Without it, info doesn’t transfer to long-term memory.
That’s why I emphasize focus training alongside speed reading.
I recommend three key science-backed resources:
ADHD 2.0 – Understanding and optimizing attention.
Focus by Harvard Business Review – Practical applications.
Hyperfocus by Christopher Bailey – Techniques for deep concentration.
These aren’t optional—they’re foundational.
Research shows just 10 minutes of focused attention meditation daily can significantly improve reading comprehension in weeks.
My Research Integration Process
Clients often ask how I stay updated with reading science.
Unlike anecdotal speed reading programs, I rely on systematic research integration.
I immerse myself in original research—reading thousands of pages of academic journals and books.
My process includes:
Primary source analysis: Reading original cognitive neuroscience and psychology papers.
Meta-analysis reviews: Synthesizing findings across many studies.
Applied testing: Validating with client exercises.
I also use AI tools to help synthesize data, identifying patterns across hundreds of studies.
This combination of human expertise and tech keeps my methods cutting-edge.
Quantifying Reading Performance: Beyond Gut Feeling
A key to my approach is objective measurement.
I developed software that lets readers measure their skills precisely.
Clients read a set number of words, and the system calculates reading speed instantly.
For example, 1,000 words in 5 minutes equals 200 words per minute.
Benchmarks include:
Average adult reads ~238 words per minute.
Audiobooks are around 150 wpm.
Skilled readers often exceed twice audiobook speed.
These empirical baselines help entrepreneurs set realistic goals.
Conclusion
When reading techniques align with how the brain processes information, remarkable progress happens.
Entrepreneurs I work with don’t just read faster—they think differently.
Reading skill isn’t fixed—it’s trainable at any age.
Understanding the science behind reading transforms how you engage with knowledge.
In a world flooded with information, efficiently processing and retaining knowledge is a powerful advantage.
I’m passionate about sharing these research-based methods because I’ve seen how they elevate reading, decision-making, innovation, and ultimately, business success.
The science of reading isn’t just academic—it’s your competitive edge in an increasingly complex world.

Spelling Championship 2025: Where Young Minds Compete and Shine
Tumblr media
Language is power, and spelling is its foundation. In 2025, the spelling championship promises to be an exciting event where young minds gather to showcase their brilliance. These competitions do much more than test vocabulary. They foster discipline, improve memory, and build confidence in students.
The spelling championship isn’t just about words — it’s a celebration of dedication, learning, and linguistic precision. Let’s explore how this dynamic event empowers young learners and shapes their educational journey.
The Value of a Spelling Championship
A spelling championship offers an enriching experience for students across different grade levels. Participants dive deep into words, meanings, origins, and pronunciation. This not only builds strong spelling connections but also enhances their overall language comprehension.
Moreover, the competitive yet friendly environment teaches sportsmanship. Children learn how to face challenges with courage and how to celebrate or accept outcomes gracefully.
These events offer far more than trophies. The skills gained at a spelling competition last a lifetime.
Why Spelling Competitions Matter
In today’s fast-paced world, accuracy in communication is essential. A spelling competition promotes clarity in both writing and speech. It sharpens concentration and nurtures a meticulous approach to learning.
Students involved in a spell bee competition develop patience and a focused mindset. Repeating, memorizing, and understanding spelling patterns become part of their daily routine. This eventually enhances academic performance.
Furthermore, spelling competitions instill a sense of achievement. Children who participate gain self-assurance and perform better in public speaking tasks.
Online Spelling Bees: A Modern Twist
Tumblr media
With technology evolving rapidly, many organizations now offer spelling bee online formats. These digital events allow children from various regions to participate without traveling. They are interactive, timed, and often come with live leaderboards.
An online spelling bee maintains the same competitive structure as traditional events. It includes rounds, eliminations, and championship-level finals. The digital setup is user-friendly and safe, especially for young students.
Parents and teachers also benefit. They can watch and support participants from the comfort of home or classroom. Thus, the spelling bee online format has become increasingly popular worldwide.
Building Spelling Connections in Daily Learning
The term spelling connections refers to the understanding of how words are formed, pronounced, and used. Strong connections help students recognize word patterns, prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
Participating in a spelling competition regularly enhances these skills. Children become familiar with different spelling rules. They also begin to enjoy the complexity of language.
By studying etymology and word origins, learners deepen their knowledge. These spelling connections serve them well in reading, writing, and even standardized tests.
Preparing for the Spelling Championship 2025
Preparation is key to success. Students aiming to join the spelling championship in 2025 must start early. The process should include:
Daily reading to expose children to new vocabulary
Using flashcards to reinforce spelling memory
Conducting practice rounds with friends or family
Participating in mini spell bee competitions at school or online
Watching videos of previous spelling competitions for reference
Consistent practice not only improves accuracy but also builds speed. By creating a routine, children feel more confident and perform better on competition day.
Teacher’s Role in Spelling Mastery
Educators play a vital role in guiding children through spelling competition preparation. Teachers can:
Organize weekly classroom spelling games
Introduce advanced vocabulary lists
Teach phonics and pronunciation rules
Encourage participation in school-level spell bee competitions
When teachers actively support these efforts, students show noticeable improvement. Schools that promote such programs contribute to long-term academic excellence.
Parental Involvement Makes a Difference
Parents are the first coaches children have. Their involvement can significantly impact a child’s performance in a spelling championship. From encouraging regular reading to helping with practice drills, their support is invaluable.
Additionally, parents should:
Set realistic goals
Offer positive feedback
Celebrate small victories
Introduce engaging tools like spelling apps or word puzzles
Parental encouragement builds a positive learning atmosphere. When children feel supported, their confidence grows, and so does their interest in spelling competitions.
What to Expect During the Spelling Championship
The spelling championship is organized in multiple rounds. Each round becomes slightly more difficult than the last. Participants must spell aloud, within a time limit, and follow rules strictly.
Judges provide words, sometimes with definitions, origin, or use in a sentence. One mistake means elimination. The last participant standing wins the title.
These high-pressure conditions test more than memory. They measure focus, composure, and stage presence. Joining a spell bee competition prepares children for public speaking and time-sensitive challenges.
Benefits of Joining a Spell Bee Competition
Participating in a spell bee competition builds more than spelling skills. It enhances:
Public speaking and pronunciation
Listening and comprehension
Critical thinking and quick decision-making
Academic excellence in all language subjects
Additionally, the spirit of competition fosters ambition and responsibility. Every participant learns to work hard, stay disciplined, and accept outcomes with grace.
Even those who don’t win gain valuable experience. Every spelling competition becomes a stepping stone toward personal growth.
Spelling Competitions and Future Success
Tumblr media
The impact of joining a spelling championship can last a lifetime. Students develop a love for words and learning. Many former participants excel in writing, debating, and even law or journalism.
These contests lay the foundation for strong communication skills. And as we know, communication is key in every profession. Children who participate in spelling competitions often grow into confident, articulate adults.
Whether a student wins or not, the journey is transformative. It opens the door to lifelong learning and curiosity.
Conclusion: A Platform to Shine
The spelling championship is more than an academic event. It is a stage where dedication meets recognition. It provides students with a chance to test themselves, face an audience, and explore the beauty of language.
Whether it’s a spelling bee online, a school-level spelling competition, or the national spell bee competition, each experience is valuable. These events nurture not just spelling accuracy but also emotional strength and intellectual depth.
With consistent preparation, support from teachers, and encouragement from parents, any child can shine. So, if you know a young learner passionate about words, encourage them to take part in the spelling championship 2025. It may just be the beginning of a remarkable journey.

Verbal Reasoning in UCAT: Proven Tips to Improve Accuracy
Preparing for the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) can be challenging, especially the Verbal Reasoning section, which demands critical reading, fast comprehension, and decision-making under time pressure. Whether you're just starting your UCAT preparation or are aiming to boost your accuracy, this guide is here to help you navigate the Verbal Reasoning section with confidence.
At Rawmould Education, we specialize in UCAT coaching online, offering students across India—including top cities like Hyderabad—the tools, techniques, and real exam strategies needed to improve their performance. Let’s dive into practical tips and insights to sharpen your Verbal Reasoning accuracy.
Tumblr media
What is Verbal Reasoning in the UCAT?
The Verbal Reasoning section tests your ability to quickly read and interpret written information, and then decide whether given statements are true, false, or can’t tell based on the passage.
You’ll face:
44 questions
Divided into 11 passages
All to be completed in just 21 minutes
This means less than 30 seconds per question—time management and precision are crucial!
Why Accuracy Matters in Verbal Reasoning
Many students struggle with Verbal Reasoning not because they can’t understand the content, but because they lose focus, misread details, or run out of time. Every mark counts, especially when applying to competitive medical or dental schools.
Improving your accuracy will:
Boost your overall UCAT score
Help reduce test-day stress
Build your confidence going into other sections like Decision Making and Abstract Reasoning
Let’s explore how you can improve.
1. Practice Skimming and Scanning
Verbal Reasoning doesn’t test your ability to read literature—it’s about fast information extraction.
Skimming:
Quickly run your eyes over the passage to understand the main idea and structure. Don’t get stuck reading word for word.
Scanning:
Look for keywords in the question, then go back to the passage and scan for those terms to find the relevant section.
Tip: At Rawmould Education, we teach scanning drills during our UCAT coaching online sessions to build these skills efficiently.
2. Master the Question Types
There are typically two main formats:
Comprehension questions: Require close reading of arguments or details.
Critical reasoning questions: Focus on inference, assumptions, and evaluating arguments.
Understanding these question types allows you to apply the right strategy each time.
3. Use “True / False / Can’t Tell” Logic Smartly
This is where many students lose marks by overthinking or making assumptions beyond the passage.
True: The statement is explicitly supported by the text.
False: The statement is clearly contradicted by the passage.
Can’t Tell: There isn’t enough evidence in the passage to confirm or deny it.
Avoid using your background knowledge—stick strictly to what's written.
During our UCAT coaching in Hyderabad, our tutors at Rawmould Education walk students through detailed examples of how to confidently eliminate wrong answer choices using this method.
4. Develop Time-Saving Strategies
Running out of time is a common issue. Here are some proven techniques:
Don’t read the entire passage in detail before looking at questions.
Attempt easier passages first—this helps build momentum.
If stuck, flag and move on. UCAT doesn’t penalize for wrong answers, so make educated guesses if needed.
Our UCAT preparation modules are structured to include time-based mock drills to simulate this real-test pressure and help students build speed without compromising accuracy.
5. Use UCAT Practice Tests Wisely
You can't improve what you don't measure. Regular use of UCAT practice tests helps in:
Understanding how questions are framed
Tracking your progress over time
Identifying weak spots that need more attention
Rawmould Education provides access to full-length UCAT practice tests, detailed performance reports, and expert feedback—all integrated into our online coaching program.
6. Expand Your Reading Stamina
Improving your reading stamina and comprehension can make a huge difference.
Try:
Reading editorials, science journals, or news articles daily
Practicing summarizing a passage in one sentence
Identifying arguments and counterarguments in the text
In our UCAT coaching online curriculum, we provide curated reading materials and weekly comprehension workouts designed specifically for Indian students aspiring for international medical admissions.
7. Avoid Common Pitfalls
Here are a few mistakes to watch out for:
Making assumptions based on outside knowledge
Rushing through without understanding the question
Overanalyzing simple questions
Changing answers too often based on doubt
Our mentors help students overcome these psychological hurdles through mindset training, mock reviews, and error analysis sessions.
8. Join a Structured UCAT Coaching Program
If you’re serious about getting a high UCAT score, self-study alone might not be enough. A structured program provides:
Expert guidance
Consistent practice
Personalized feedback
Whether you’re located in Hyderabad or anywhere else in India, our UCAT coaching in Hyderabad is available fully online with live classes, interactive sessions, and one-on-one mentorship.
We also offer:
Free diagnostic tests
Strategy workshops
On-demand video lessons
UCAT preparation timelines customized for Indian curricula like CBSE, ICSE, and IB
Final Thoughts

"Critical thinking and reading comprehension are skills that aren't taught to a lot of students in the US anymore."
Very true! The US school system is absolutely fucked and cares more about producing good test results than actually teaching students useful and vital skills, so students can do just fine on standardized tests but end up graduating without the ability to put that knowledge into practice in their day-to-day lives.
But! I will say this again! Your education does not end in a high school classroom! And you can in fact build and improve these skills on your own! It's very easy actually! Just google "how to improve [reading comprehension/critical thinking/etc] skills" and you'll find tons of advice and guides from a lot of different resources! Here's a couple to get you started!

Why Getting Enough Sleep is Important For Our Bodies
by Annisa Nur Ratri Oktavianti
Sleep is one of the important need in our lives beside eating, drinking, and excercising. It is a crucial activites for our bodies. Physiologically, sleep is defined as a state our bodies enter into during which brain wave activity changes and our nervous system is less reactive to external stimuli. But our sleep is not constant throughout the night.
“Your brain is actually very active during sleep doing important things — it’s not just resting,” says Carl W. Bazil, MD, PhD, the Caitlin Tynan Doyle Profesor of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center. “And if you don’t get sleep you don’t function on a number of levels the way you should”. This means that sleeping can improve our brain function better.
There is a study in 2004 involving 48 healthy adults to sleep for 6 hours or less for two weeks. What is the result? They can’t focus easily and it became worse during those two weeks. They became weak and sleep deprived, almost the same as a person who had been awake for two nights of no sleep.
After hearing that, surely we want to improve our sleeping time better right?
There are many reasons why getting enough sleep is important, but I’m just going to tell you two reasons of it.
Poor sleeping makes us moody. Matthew Walker, of University of California Berkeley’s Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory said that “Without sleep, the brain had reverted back to more primitive patterns of activity — in that it was unable to put emotional experiences into context and produced controlled, appropriate responses,”. A study in 2007 has proven this. Twenty-six healthy participants age 18–30 years were assigned to either a sleep-deprivation group or sleep-control group. As a result, they experienced non-optimal decision-making when they are on work as well as emotional irrationality.
Not getting sleep can literally make you sick. Studies have shown that individuals are more likely to catch a cold virus when you’re sleep deprived. Participants were 153 healthy men and women, ages 21–55 for 14 consecutive days. The results, of the 153 subjects, 135 (88.24%) were infected; 54 (35.29%) developed a cold defined as infection and the objective cold criterion and 66 (43.14%) developed a cold defined as infection and the subjective (Jackson) criterion.
From these explanation earlier, we can conclude that getting enough sleep is very important for our bodies because we can avoid sleep deprive, unstable emotion, and sickness.

ORGANIZE & IMPROVE YOUR STUDY PLANS
10 Reasons Why Studying is Hard
1 . You don’t know WHY
You don’t know why you have to study. You don’t know your true purpose.
Let me inform you: You have to study because this is the stage in life where you create a foundation of all the basic knowledge you need and learn all sorts of things.
In the next stage, you get to choose what career path you want to take. That is why you should think about your “WHY”.
I am studying because I want to study every day and be prepared for my exams.
2 . You don’t know HOW to study
If you are like my brother, then you don’t know how to study.
Somehow, when we join high school, nobody really teaches us how to study.
Studying involves using different tactics to understand and remember things for the future, or for exams.
You need to learn to memorize.
This is how I memorize things for my exams:
I condense my notes into a few tiny words (summarizing)
I memorize these little words by:
Writing them over and over again
Closing my eyes and remembering them
Testing myself by writing the words again
3 . You are not studying at the right time
Are you a morning person or a night person?
Do you feel energized at 10 am or 10 pm?
These are questions you need to ask yourself to learn why studying is hard for you.
You need the answers to these questions in order to actually study.
4 . You don’t study every day
Alright, you don’t have to study every day.
But that doesn’t mean you only study at 1 am the night before the exam!
That is not smart at all. How are you supposed to teach yourself 3 months-worth of work in a few caffeine-spurred hours?
Stop making studying hard! Just study a little every day.
5 . You don’t have motivation to study
You can’t study at all because you don’t motivate yourself to study.
That is sometimes an excuse because here is the secret: Action comes before motivation, not the other way round.
Stop waiting for the right moment to come down from the sky like clouds parting and the sun shining down on you.
Just open your book right now and read it.
6 . You have some bad habits
If you can’t study at all, maybe you need to study your own habits.
Get a notebook and begin to track every single thing you do in a day. I would advise tracking habits after every hour.
Then you will begin to notice that you are doing some bad habits that make studying hard for you.
7 . You can’t focus on studying
Studying is hard for you and you can’t study at all because you can’t focus on studying.
My advice for you is to sit down and ask yourself why you can’t focus on studying and find a solution to that.
8 . You don’t have fun while studying
Studying to you is probably boring work!
You need to make studying appealing and inviting so you will feel motivated to study.
9 . You don’t know any study hacks
Everyone has their own study hacks.
You probably don’t. That is why studying is hard for you.
You need come up with a personal game plan for how you plan to get good grades on your next test.
10 . You are just plain lazy
Maybe you are just lazy. Everyone gets lazy once in a while. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get off your butt right now and start studying.
Do the least you can possibly do. Open your book and plan to learn just one thing today.
Remember only you can go deep inside and find out why you can’t study or why you never feel like studying. Ask yourself these questions.
That is how you will begin to create a good mindset that will help you to study.

How To Be Intelligent
What comes to your mind first when you think about what intelligence means to you? Probably someone who born with an aptitude for math or physics, or a classical author like Virginia Woolf or Leo Tolstoy, or maybe even just whoever is/was at the top of your class in high school.
Well, what would you say if I told you that it is not that simple?
I’m 1983, American psychologist Dr. Howard Gardner proposed the Multiple Intelligence Theory in his book “Frames of Mind,” which revolutionized the way we understand the concept of intelligence.
Gardner’s theory suggests that although being the most mathematically inclined, the most logical, or the most articulate person in your class comes with benefits to your GPA, there are more ways in which one could be considered intelligent.
In his original theory, he identified the eight below:
Verbal-linguistic (“word smart”)
Logical-mathematical (“number/reasoning smart”)
Musical (“music smart”)
Visual-spatial (“picture/art smart”)
Bodily-kinesthetic (“body smart”)
Interpersonal (“people smart”)
Intrapersonal (“self smart”)
Naturalist smart (“nature smart”)
As you can see, there are many ways that one can be smart. You might be thinking, “who cares? They’re not valued in the school system, so what’s the point?”
Well, every intelligence, even the undervalued ones, have a place in this world, and its own set of unique benefits.
For example, without people who are visual-spatial smart, we would not have art in our culture, would we? Or the beloved cartoons we watched when we were children. Without people who are at least a little bodily-kinesthetic skill, we would not have firefighters and paramedics that are strong or fast enough to rescue people. Without people with interpersonal intelligence, there would be no such thing as a good teacher.
What kind of world would that be?
You, me, our friends, our family. We are all competent, capable, intelligent beings, and our minds always have and always will be valuable.

Banish the Back-to-School Blues: Embracing a Positive Mindset
Let's face it, the anticipation of a new school year can be accompanied by a case of the back-to-school blues. Missing the freedom of summer and the looming pressure of academics can create anxiety and negativity. However, a positive mindset is key to conquering the chaos.
Focus on the Fun: Remember, school is not just about textbooks and tests. It's a place to learn new things, make friends, and explore your interests. Look forward to reconnecting with classmates, participating in extracurricular activities, and the excitement of a new academic year.
Set Goals: Having goals for the school year can boost motivation and give you a sense of purpose. These goals could be academic, like mastering a particular subject, or personal, like developing a new skill or joining a club.
Visualize Success: Take a few minutes each day to visualize yourself succeeding in school. Imagine yourself acing that math test, delivering a stellar presentation, or making a new friend. Positive visualization can help program your brain for success.
By adopting a positive and growth-oriented mindset, you'll approach the school year with a sense of excitement and readiness to learn.
Gear Up for Success: Essential Supplies and Organization Hacks
Preparation is key to a smooth back-to-school transition. Here's how to ensure you're organized and equipped for the academic year:
Gather Your Supplies: Review your school supply list and make a shopping trip to stock up on notebooks, pens, pencils, binders, and other essentials. Getting organized with colorful folders and highlighters can make learning more fun and visually engaging.
Organize Your Backpack: Avoid the black hole effect! Invest in backpack organizers or compartments to separate notebooks, folders, and loose papers. This will save you precious time searching for that missing worksheet during class.
Create a Study Space: Designate a specific area in your room as your study space. This area should be clutter-free, well-lit, and conducive to focused work. Consider adding a comfortable chair, a desk organizer, and a bulletin board to keep important information within easy reach.
Essential oils, like lavender for promoting calmness or peppermint for boosting focus, can be diffused in your study space to create a refreshing and stimulating environment. Don’t forget to check How Do Essential Oils Aid in Maintaining Focus and Calm for Students?
By being organized and prepared, you'll feel confident and ready to tackle any academic challenge.
Revive Your Routine: Sleep, Schedules, and Healthy Habits
After a summer of relaxed schedules, adjusting back to a structured school routine can be challenging. Here are some tips to help you smoothly transition:
Establish a Sleep Schedule: A consistent sleep schedule is crucial for optimal brain function, focus, and memory. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night, and try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, even on weekends. You can try Essential Oils - Perfect Solution for Good Sleep
Create a Daily Schedule: Develop a daily schedule that incorporates school time, homework periods, extracurricular activities, mealtimes, and relaxation time. This will help you manage your time effectively and avoid procrastination.
Embrace Healthy Habits: Fuel your brain and body with nutritious food. Pack healthy lunches filled with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Stay hydrated throughout the day by carrying a reusable water bottle and sipping on water regularly.
Getting adequate sleep, maintaining a consistent schedule, and prioritizing healthy habits will set you up for success in the classroom and beyond.
Prepare for the Plunge: Academic Refreshers and Getting Ahead
The start of a new school year often involves revisiting concepts from the previous year. Here are some ways to ease back into the academic grind:
Review Key Concepts: Spend some time reviewing key concepts from the previous year's courses. Textbooks, class notes, and online resources can be helpful for refreshing your memory.
Practice Makes Perfect: For subjects like math or foreign languages, it's beneficial to complete practice problems or review basic grammar rules. This will help you solidify your foundation and avoid feeling overwhelmed when new material is introduced.
Start Early (Optional): If you're feeling particularly ambitious, you could even preview upcoming coursework by skimming textbooks or researching topics online. This can give you a head start and make the transition to new material smoother.
Remember, the goal isn't to become an expert before school even starts; it's simply to jog your memory and boost your confidence.
Connect and Conquer: Building Strong Relationships with Teachers and Peers
A strong support system is essential for a successful school year. Here's how to cultivate positive relationships with teachers and classmates:
Introduce Yourself: If you have new teachers, take a moment to introduce yourself during the first few days of class. Make eye contact, smile, and express your interest in learning the subject matter.
Participate Actively: Engage in class discussions, ask questions, and actively participate in classroom activities. This demonstrates your interest and helps you connect with the material and your teacher.
Be a Good Teammate: Respect your classmates, collaborate effectively on group projects, and offer help when needed. Building positive relationships with your peers can create a supportive learning environment.
Seek Help When Needed: Don't be afraid to ask for help from teachers or classmates if you're struggling with a concept. Most teachers are happy to provide extra support during office hours or after school.
By establishing positive relationships with teachers and peers, you'll create a network of support that can enhance your academic performance and make school a more enjoyable experience.
A Final Word: Embrace the Journey
Back-to- school season can be a whirlwind of activity and adjustment. But remember, it's also a time for growth, learning, and new experiences. Embrace the journey, stay organized, prioritize your well-being, and don't be afraid to ask for help. With the right mindset and a few helpful tips, you can transform back-to-school from a source of stress into an exciting launchpad for a successful and fulfilling academic year.
Bonus Tip: Consider surprising your classmates with small back-to-school gifts to foster friendship and spread some cheer. These gifts could be fun and functional, like personalized notebooks, cute pencil cases, or stress balls.
So, grab your backpack, gather your supplies, and get ready to conquer the new school year!
