whats cookin'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have heard through the grapevine (whatever that is) that to be considered a blogger, specifically a favourite blogger, one must actually blog! i think the big thing to write about right now was my recent move, however i just dont want to. i do really love it here and feel so comfortable, i just need more time spent walking around the city to talk about it. definitely see myself being here for a long time tho!
anyways as i listen to
i will give a list of all the things i have cooked in the kitchen of my uni residence:
Bagels!!
https://mxriyum.com/homemade-everything-bagels/ so easy and turned out so good! i had all the ingredients (there are like 3) and my dear friend, A, gave me everything bagel seasoning so ofc i had to make bagels on my first day here! (picture is attached at the top)
2. Chicken soup!
so good! i had half a pack of chicken thighs left and didnt want to eat anymore chicken and rice. so i made soup! always use bone in and skin on chicken. sear the skin side down for a few minutes to get a bunch of flavour and then cook ur vegetable's (celery, onion, garlic, and whatever else) in that. added spinach for iron and corn for cooler looking poops!
3. pasta
penne alla vodka (no vodka, sadly (im in AA)). Very easy, ive made it so many times, i dont need measurements. melted string cheese on top adds a lovely addition.
4. breakfast
not really cooking but i have become a breakfast person. currently its been bagels, fruit on the bottom greek yogurt (a different flavour every week!(this week its blueberry)) with granola and strawberries. also occasionally (weekends or tuesdays) ill make an egg white and spinach omelet and toast.
Have been cooking and eating others things as well. fruits, carrots and hummus, chickpea curry, granola bars, ice cream, miss vickies. also had a burger 2 days ago, and have 5 more frozen burgers left in the box. i have only eaten out twice, once for a bueatiful friends birthday! and once cause i wanted a burger and milkshake (they forgot my milkshake and gave me a can of pepsi instead).
anyways, i have been laughing at scammer videos, taking the train, and having dreams about one direction getting back together.
hope everyones had a fun first 3 weeks of uni!
Much love, care, and appreciation,
Maggy 🍔

I’ve noticed lately there’s an uptick in people who write characters as being poor/growing up poor(particularly Mario and Luigi), and I love to see it because I grew up poor myself. I wanted to compile a bunch of memories I have of growing up poor as a potential reference to anybody who wants it, because i know not everybody here was broke but wants to write characters as broke and it can be hard to find resources that AREN’T just guesses at what things might’ve been like. do note my own experiences aren’t universal, but they’re what I’m familiar with since it was my own childhood.
Definitely not a totally complete list and I'll add more as I think of them, and if people want to ask me questions for any clarification, go ahead!
-Brushing our teeth by taking a mouthful of watered down mouthwash and sticking the toothbrush in your mouth and brushing with your mouth full so we didnt need to buy toothpaste
-often times breakfast was just a glass of milk because it was relatively cheap
-fancy family breakfasts were sundays only and usually simple french crepes because they’re only eggs milk and flour, and we’d have them with butter+sugar or lemon+sugar
-my mom was a waitress at nights and those days she’d send home leftovers from her job as dinner since they didnt want to waste at the restaurant she worked at
-Birthdays i always shared with my older sister and parties were every other year with a hard limit on 5 invites each. they were either at the small family owned movie theatre or the bowling alley.
-I never had a playdate at my own house. I never understood at the time, but i know now it was because our house was really run down and we didn’t have extra snacks or anything to entertain guests really
-once a month our mom would have enough change scrounged up to send me and my siblings (5 of us total) to the corner store 2 blocks down for slurpees. Highlight of the month.
-we’d have quesadillas a lot (tortillas with cheese salsa and chicken, not really authentic) because one grocery store chicken could feed everybody for 2 days straight this way
-fried rice or hash browns with bacon and onions were a common meal since onions, potatoes, rice and bulk frozen bacon was cheap at the time
-every family pet we ever had were rescues we got for free with the exception of my 2 current cats which my mom bought for $75 off of kijiji 14 years ago. I still have the kitties!
-we often had those massive flatpacks of assorted soda flavours because it was cheaper than juice or bottled water but we were limited to 2 cans a week
-we shared the bathwater up until we were in highschool, and even then we wouldn’t drain the tub if somebody else needed a bath and they could re-use the water.
-the local church would send a lot of donations our way. the most prominent were bags upon bags of day old bakery bread they couldnt sell.
-a lot of times dinner were whole frozen fish we could get for cheap since they were too small to cut and sell as fillets.
-hot dogs were a VERY common meal because they were cheap in bulk frozen packs
-the fanciest appliance in the whole house was a massive, clunky kitchen maid my mom got at her wedding.
-we always made our own fresh pesto since it was much cheaper than storebought pastes. it also tastes WAY better imo
-every christmas the local church would request gifts of a certain variety, under the premise of secret santas. they’d ask for “gift for -gender- child, -age-, -interest- and then send the gifts to the appropriate family. We got a LOT of gift cards to places like indigo or EB games/Gamestop for this reason
-the year my older brother and I got nintendo DSlites for christmas was because we were donated money. we each got 1 DS game each, and took turns with them. all the DS games we got after that were second hand or donated.
-I had about 15 random Littlest Pet Shops and no houses/playsets for them because again, donations. the one year I finally got one was during a white elephant at the local church, where I got the messenger pigeon and post office.

Days 1-9
Imagine that, me with a late start. ANYWAY. Where to begin? I guess just stating what I’ve been up to and my goals. I made the choice to take control of my life and make a real change this year. I have a purpose and the motivators to get me where I need to be and I’m determined to lose this weight and become a healthier me before I’m 35. I’ve struggled with my weight and relationship with food a really long time. A couple of years ago I lost about 50 pounds, but life happened and depression beat my ass up a little bit so I teetered. This battle with BED (binge eating disorder) is a rough one and it seems never-ending, but we out here. I’ve been focusing on a bullet journal format to keep track of my goals for the year, but I also wanted to incorporate some type of daily reflection to help keep myself accountable and busy (so, Hi!).
For the month of January, I am solely keeping myself accountable for my calorie deficit. My current cut is a big one, mainly because I’m not exercising yet and I work 40 hrs. a week at a sedentary job. I was trying for 1650 calories a day for the first week and was having trouble meeting that and needed to add in more protein so I upped it to 1700 calories. Baby steps seem to bring me the best results so I start out small. I’m also trying to get back into the swing of meal prepping, so there’s a lot going on in my head right now as I create recipes and try to balance all my calories for the day.
During week one, I had a meal prep that consisted of 2 rotating meals for M-F and daily snacks since I don’t really like to eat breakfast. Snacks were yogurts, fruit, cottage cheese, and nuts.
Week One: Meal One
2 Trader Joe’s Sweet Apple Chicken Sausages
100g Green Beans
5 oz. Sweet Potato
Week One: Meal Two
4 oz. Trader Joe’s Carne Asada
1 cup Jasmine Rice
92g Roasted Broccoli Florets
As you can see, for the most part I’m trying to stick to a whole diet. I want to try and reduce the amount of processed foods I’m eating and the amount I’m dining out because it’s really gotten out of hand. As long as I meal prep, it seems easy though and I really like that. I created a “picking” grocery list to assist in grocery shopping and meal planning for the week. I’m trying to spend an average of $100/week on my grocery trips to help save money.
This week I took a little more time to look back on my mistakes from week one. I added more protein to my diet. Although, week one was a success. I lost 10.4 pounds as of January 7th. WOOOHOOO!!!
Week Two: Meal One
Perdue Grilled Italian Chicken
Bird’s Eye Roasted Potatoes with Garlic Butter
1 cup Green Beans
Week Two: Meal Two
3 oz. Lean Taco Meat
1/2 cup Jasmine Rice
1/4 cup Black Beans
1/4 cup Corn
50g Avocado
1 T. Salsa
2 T. Sour Cream
I purchased some Ghost Whey Protein....and OH. MY. GOD. The “Fruity Cereal Milk” flavor is the bomb.com, literally like drinking the milk after a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. This week I’m trying to have my daily intake be something like this:
Breakfast: Protein Shake with Fairlife 2% Milk +/- Coffee
AM Snack: 2 Hardboiled Eggs with Mustard and Pickle
Lunch: Meal Prep 1 or 2 +/- Fruit
PM Snack: Yogurt with Almonds
Dinner: Meal Prep 1 or 2
Late Snack: Cottage Cheese with Strawberries
This time I just gotta stick with it. I’m gonna show up every day and hold myself accountable. I’m going to take baby steps and forgive myself for bumps along the way. This is a lifestyle change, not a diet. Until tomorrow!
xo

a little about today
went outside and starting running for the first time in a while. im super out of shape now. im nowhere near what i was even like just a few months ago. it's crazy how much i've fallen since I left AIT. but it is what it is. I am going to start running every day now though. It's like the only way I actually go outside these days, except for work.
anyway, after that, i just spent the whole day playing minecraft and watching anime. I watched the first 10 episodes of the second season of the devil is a part timer. I was really disappointed with the way they adapted it. The animation is super janky in places. The story is still really nice and silly, but they really did a poor job of adapting it. It's too bad, but the manga is still really nice so i'll just stick to that. I also watched the first 5 episodes of Dandadan. And wow, what a crazy experience. It has a pretty rough start (if you've seen the show, you know what I'm talking about) but after that it's really good. It's genuinely wacky as hell and funny. I love Momo and Okarun's dynamic a lot, it's different than what I'm used to seeing. It's a good depiction of teen romance, especially in episode 5. It's a pretty fun watch overall.
I did actually eat today too. I made myself eggs for lunch and ate a rice and chicken burrito (I'm so bad at folding tortillas). I'm pretty proud of myself for eating real food today. it's the little things, i guess.
I have work tomorrow. we'll be taking inventory of the meat market. should be interesting, at least.
good night blog.

Did you ever used to make cookies, cakes or pie with your grandma? So I lived with my maternal grandma growing up but I never baked with her, mainly because her specialty is more on cooking. I did bake cookies, however, with one of my aunts with whom I lived, too. I’d help her mix the dough and roll them up into balls.
Do you burn incense? No, I hate the smell and it also reminds me of church so I never liked incense.
Do you smoke weed? Nope.
Have you actually been through a devastating natural disaster before? We have 1-2 typhoons every year that are on the more destructive side, yes; but we’ve been very fortunate to have never been severely affected. The most we’ve faced was like ankle-deep flood that reached the inside of our home, but that’s it. What fast food place, in your opinion, has the best french fries? KFC has terrific seasoned fries. Jollibee is great if you’re looking for some classic salty fries.
Do you believe one day aliens might take over Planet Earth? I don’t believe it will ever happen in this lifetime, but the scenario also doesn’t seem all too impossible for me. We’re not the only ones out here anyway.
Do you like soda pop? If so, which is your favorite and least favorite? I detest soda and any kind of fizzy drink. I will take a sip of Pepsi though if I had no choice but to drink soda.
Does it bother you when people burp around you or do you do it too? It only bothers me if they burp close enough and I smell what they just ate, ugh lol gross. But burping for me overall is less gross than farting, so it’s whatever.
When is the next time you’ll talk to the cousin you’re closest to? Not so sure! Maybe a few weekends from now when we come over to visit.
When was the last time you saw a bird? What kind of bird was this? I’m not sure; I haven’t looked outside in a while. Probably a few days ago as they are everywhere where I live anyway.
How old were you when you had the chicken pox? I’ve never had it.
Ever had a friend named Alex or John? I’ve had a few Alexes as friend.
When was the last time you painted a picture? December. I never finished it though.
What kind of stuff do you like on your hot dogs? Mayonnaise or honey mustard.
Where did you kiss the last person you kissed? Outside my house.
What’s your favorite thing to eat for breakfast? Fried rice, omelette, and hotdogs, with salted egg on the side.
Has someone seen you naked in the past month? Nope.
How many concerts have you been to? Four international acts and a bunch of smaller local shows.
Do you think it’s right for straight guys to get their tongue pierced? Well, yeah? Let’s not gatekeep piercings, lmao.
Last thing you drank? Water.
Have you ever thought about getting your nose pierced? Key word here is thought - yeah. But it’s not like I ever plan on acting on that thought; I was never all that crazy about piercings.
Would you ever donate blood? Nope, unless it were for a really really really REALLY close loved one. Otherwise the thought just makes me feel faint.
Have you ever driven without a license? There have been a handful of times where I was mid-drive and realized that I left my wallet (where my license is) at home. During those times, I panic for like 5 seconds lol and try to drive as responsibly as I can so as to not get pulled over; once I get to wherever I have to be, I would typically GrabExpress my wallet to me so that I don’t feel stressed by the time I have to drive back home.
Are you ticklish? Yeah, super. I even feel tickled when someone puts their hands near me (like they’re not even touching me yet) so it’s become a bit of a gag where my friends would place their hands a few inches away just to see me squirm and jump lol.
What are you listening to? I have Episode 2 of Suchwita in the background.
Describe the main problem with your last relationship? We were extremely toxic to one another.
What’s on your shower curtain? Nothing, it’s just this plain plastic-but-not-so-plastic(??) material. I never learned what it’s made of.
What cartoon/anime character can you most relate to? Mr. Peanutbutter from Bojack Horseman. I feel like I’m one of the handful of people who actively take a liking to him, and I think it’s because I see a lot of myself in him and idk it’s just a bit reassuring? validating? idk the right word, to be able to relate to someone so much.
Do you have any pictures of celebs saved to your computer? Yeah I have a few photos of BTS on my laptop, mostly desktop wallpapers and memes I come across. Most of my photos of them are on my phone though - a camera roll of over 30,000 strong, lol.
Do you like turtleneck sweaters/shirts? They’re extremely uncomfy and make my neck itch like crazy, but yes. I like how they look on me, so I get them nonetheless.
Do you find hands attractive? Yes, very much so.
Do you think it is silly to give names to vehicles, or other inanimate objects? No, unless you develop a rather obsessive relationship with whatever the thing is, I guess? Otherwise, you do you. My dad has names for our cars and I think it’s actually pretty endearing.
Do you ever wear a robe? I don’t even own one, so no. Where I live is too warm for those.
Is there a hair color/style you really like but don’t think you could pull off? Neon orange.
Out of all the Disney/Pixar animal “sidekicks”, which one is your favorite? Maximus from Tangled!
If your mom was a teacher, would you want to be in her class? Continued from Thursday evening. Probably not, only because I don’t want to have to encounter negative comments about her should it ever get to that point.
As a kid, did you love playing on Neopets? I had an offline Neopets game on my old phone that I fairly enjoyed, but I never actually knew what it’s like to play Neopets online. To this day I still don’t know much about Neopets beyond the game I used to play.
Would you ever get a pet turtle? Why or why not? No. I wouldn’t know the first step in taking care of them.
What shop/store/brand would you model for, if given the choice? Nike or adidas.
If I search your room will I find birth control? Nope.
Have you ever witnessed a birth? Not in real life.
Have you ever been told you were a good writer? Yeah, it’s the only skill-related compliment I ever get.
Is the last person of the opposite sex you texted single? I can’t even remember who that would be.
Which Scooby-Doo character are you most like (Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, Fred, Velma, the monster, Scrappy?) I never watched much Scooby Doo so I don’t actually know the personalities of the different characters.
Describe your dream wedding where money is no option. I don’t think I even have one anymore; I used to have visions of the perfect wedding, but those images don’t seem as appealing to me now...idk, maybe renting out an entire art museum in like Europe? Something like that, I guess.
Do you have a birth mark? Where? Does it look like anything? I have one on the left side of my upper back, and another one on my butt. I used to have one on my right arm but that faded away over time.
If you were blind for the rest of your life… what would you miss seeing the most? The sea and the view of cities from an airplane. And my dogs.
What is your favorite animal? List three adjectives to explain your choice. Dogs. They’re friendly, lively, and (always) excited.
What is the most outrageous thing you’ve done for God? Believe in it. What person in the Bible do you most closely identify with? Nobody.
If you were to write a book what would it be about? That would either be a memoir or a biography about someone else.
Who do you admire the most? I don’t really get the concept of admiring people. < Same, I always struggle when faced with this question. Idk...I just don’t care enough about anyone to hold this kind of lasting feeling for them.
Who was your hero when you were a child, and what did you do to be like them? I didn’t have any heroes.
If you could rid the world of one thing, what would it be? Pickles.
The last piece of roadkill you saw, what kind of animal was it? Cat.
Has anyone ever cheated on their boyfriend/girlfriend with you? Nope.
Who/what is the last thing you kicked? A volleyball. List 5 things that have happened in the last 7 days. (They can be anything at all, anything that’s happened involving you, or your family, friends, partner)
I learned that four people at work got fired, and it’s been a whirlwind within our group chats since;
I had been take completely aback seeing a notification from Jin;
My client under one account managed to piss me off a billion times;
I watched a couple episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine for the first time in a couple of years; and
I managed to get Cooper’s shit (literal shit) on my clothes while walking him last Wednesday.
Do you like The Hunger Games? Never read the books; as for the movies I’ve only seen the first and it was fine.
Random fact about the person you love/like? -
What would you do if your ex contacted you? Block the number. How many pets do you want? And of what? I’m okay with my two dogs, but not gonna lie I’ve always wanted to experience having another aspin. Cooper and Agi are fantastic and I have my own dynamic with both of them, but they were also never the type to pick a ‘person’ (they love and are trusting of everyone lol), the same way Kimi – who was part aspin – instantly picked me for all of his 14 years. I’ve always naturally gravitated towards aspins and I just miss having that kind of relationship with a dog.
Have you ever asked someone out? Yup.
Is the last person you kissed a virgin? Well, no.
Who makes you the happiest? BTS and my dogs.
Has someone smacked your butt in the past week? Nope.
Was your last kiss standing up, sitting down, or laying down? Pretty sure it was done standing up. What are your views on spontaneous human combustion? Interesting, but not sure I believe in it.
What was the last zoo/aquarium you went to? Oooh I can’t remember the province but I remember having a shit time because I just felt bad for the animals.
What does the last message in your Facebook inbox concern? Angela, Reena, and I were discussing the alcohol options we can have tonight when we have our sleepover at my place.
Who is your closest friend of the opposite sex? What’s the best thing about him? Probably Hans. He’s funny and has got great advice for everything.
How did you meet the person you fell hardest for? It was in grade school and we had mutual friends who introduced us to each other.
What was the last alcoholic drink you had? Weng-weng.
What did you last take medication for? Just a Biogesic for a headache. What was your favourite thing about the person you fell hardest for? I can’t remember.
Are you a strong swimmer? Hardly. I struggle with just treading.
What is your favorite combination of colors? I like pastels or nudes combinations.
When was the last time you screamed out loud and what were the circumstances? Agi was on his way to eat Cooper’s shit so I let out a yell to scare him off.
Can you describe your father in one word? Hardworking.
What’s the first movie you ever recall seeing? Stuart Little 2.
Do you still watch movies intended for children? Of course. Isn’t that what Disney+ is for, and not for the original series or series reboots or Marvel movies? Hahahaha jk.
What was your worst fear as a child? Have you overcame that fear? Flying cockroaches, and no there is nothing in the world that would make me overcome it.
What’s your younger sibling’s name? Nina is one of them.
Have you ever had a churro? Yeah, many times in high school back when it was a fad lol.
How is/was your chemistry class in high school? Hated it, made me miserable, but also never gave a fuck about my grades for it because I knew I was headed to journalism school the year after.
What was the first thing you ate today? Tuna gimbap.

So in conversation with the housemates this evening, it came up that heat is not flavor. I was asked if I had that conversation with you and that you have a whole rant about it. Could you reprise that rant for tumblr?
Is this the rant in question?
I have definite opinions about any food made ridiculously hot for the sake of posturing, and even more definite notions about it being done secretly for “fun”.
Done properly is another matter. Here’s a link from that rant which reviews my encounter in Dublin with Thai food “spiced home style”. It was Serious Business, yes; and it was also absolutely delish.
*****
Some cuisines come by their heat naturally - that Thai dish was one example - and as I found out, the blend of other spices will always hold their end up. Each mouthful will be fiery, but also fragrant, complex and worth savouring even as the sweat-beads pop out on forehead and upper lip.
The same applies to Sichuan (mapo dofu, yum!), Hunan, Korean (buldak, yes please!), Thai, Ethiopian (sik-sik wat, rowr!), Mexican and Indian (where proper Goan Vindaloo is nothing like the restaurant version, no potatoes for one thing and made with pork for another).
*****
Hot-spiced dishes like those, with everything else in balance, is a long way from this lunatic laddish recipe found on the Internet about 20 years ago (I can’t remember where). So many onions suggest this might have started as a Dopiaza, but then it got into seriously bad company.
Serves 1-4
Ingredients:
2 lbs Chicken joints, or boneless breast meat roughly cubed
6 Medium Onions, sliced
4 Cloves Garlic, finely chopped
8 Tbsp Ghee or Vegetable Oil
2 Pints of water
24 fresh Habanero Chilies, finely chopped
30 dried red chilies, crushed, or an equivalent amount (about 5 Tbsp) of ready-crushed chilies
2 tsp Red food coloring
Spices:
2 tsp ground turmeric
2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp ground coriander
5 tsp ground hot chili powder
1 tsp dried fenugreek leaves
A couple of capsicum pods
Optional:
¼ bottle of Tabasco® sauce (Most likely the standard sauce since I don’t think the Habanero version was available in the UK at time of writing.)
¼ bottle Encona West Indian Hot Pepper sauce. (This is considerably hotter than regular Tabasco. Trust me.)
Method:
Stir enough water into the dry spices to make a stiff paste.  Heat half of the oil or ghee over medium heat, then add the spice paste.
Fry the paste for a few minutes until the water has evaporated and the mixture takes on a smooth, glossy, oily appearance
Now heat the other half of the oil in a large pot or casserole, and fry the onions and garlic until soft and golden.
Put the remaining ingredients into the pot and stir well to combine them, then put the lid on, reduce the heat, and let the whole thing simmer gently for about 90 minutes.
About 15 minutes before it’s done, add another 3 Tbsp chili powder and about a dozen more dried red chilies.
When it’s done, remove from the heat, sprinkle with 1 tsp garam masala, and allow to sit for a few minutes before serving on a bed of rice.
*****
I have no idea if this was meant as a joke - 24 fresh Habs, 30 dried chillis? Really? - but if it’s serious, there’s no point in the coriander, cumin etc. because there’s no way anyone will taste them.
As for the day afterwards, make sure some loo roll is in the freezer because...

(casserole anon from… a very long time ago 😅 here to say thank you so much for the series on casseroles!! I have saved all the recipes and I am excited to try them; the pierogi casserole sounds especially intriguing. I hope you’re staying warm!)
ah! yes! i did comfort foods at the beginning of winter... I innovated a new casserole since then!! I should share it!!
Well. It's not insanely innovative. It's just that I took an old family recipe from Dude's family, which we'd made a few times, and combined it with an amalgamation of half a dozen things off the Internet, and have come up with an easier way of eating the recipe than the original one which was off the back of a packet of seasoning or something.
So, I present:
Modified Chicken Parisienne
The main important thing here is the sherry. It's distinctive because of the sherry. I also like to flavor it with thyme. The original recipe had you bake the chicken in the sauce and then cook the rice separately, and then remove the chicken and thicken the cream sauce with sour cream at the last minute.
This seems silly to me when you could just bake the rice in as part of the dish. So I looked up chicken and rice casserole recipes, and am making that now! Since it’s fucking snowing out and the heat’s broken at work and I froze my ass off all day, here’s a good chance to share it!
So you can use basically any vegetables in this. For excitement, I took my bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs and browned them briefly, skin side down, in a hot cast iron Dutch oven, in lard, while I got everything else ready, and then left them sitting on a plate to the side while I did the rest of this.
Start with aromatics. I used several small onions and two medium carrots. You could also use like, celery, fennel, celeriac, whatever. I put those in the hot fat for like 5-10 minutes while I chopped everything else.
I diced some garlic and threw that in. Then I cut up a whole bunch of fresh broccoli, dicing the stems really well and cutting the florets apart. I threw those in and mixed them around, and then threw in a cup or two of sliced mushrooms I’d bought special for this because I love mushrooms. You could also use spinach, kale, cauliflower, green beans, peas, corn, I mean, any vegetable you care for. (Ideal way to use up anything in your freezer you have no other plans for.)
I stirred all that around, and then put in 1.5 cups of white rice, and stirred that really well also. I then tossed in about 1/4c of sherry. Stirred that around some, and then put in 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup.
To that I added a cup of water and 2 cups of milk, and then put in a little extra water just to make sure. I added salt, pepper, oregano, and rosemary, because I’m almost out of thyme, which lends itself to puns but does make me sad.
On top of that I nestled my 2 chicken thighs. The recipes call for more chicken than that but there’s only two of us and so I don’t bother.  I’d say put a piece of chicken (thigh or breast or leg) per person you’re serving. I don’t bother having enough chicken for the leftovers, as I find skin-on chicken doesn’t reheat appealingly. You could also shred cooked chicken into here if you’d rather, it doesn’t matter.
Then I topped the whole thing with ehhhh like a cup of shredded cheddar cheese, because the chicken casserole recipes call for it and I love cheese. It’s clearly optional here. I had the chicken thighs skin-side-up so I put the cheese around them, not on top of them, in the hopes that the skin will crisp a bit.
Into a hot oven I put the casserole, uncovered. Bake at 350-375 until the chicken is done, 35-45 minutes probably.
Serve hot.

Headcanon of every Digidestin and Digimons favorite food, please?
THIS IS THE CONTENT CREATION I LIVE FOR!
Anon, I could only assume you meant the Adventure gang since you didn't specify (and it's the most popular series on this blog), but if you want any other series, feel free to come back! :D
A note: I don't know a lot about Japanese cuisine, even after all the years of watching anime, so I'm going to try my best.
Adventure Kids' & Digimons' Favorite Foods
Tai: He doesn't necessarily have much of a favorite food, he's not terribly picky considering. But he recently discovered dino-shaped chicken nuggets and now he won't stop eating them.
Agumon: Literally anything. He is not picky. You could give him the strangest food in the world and he would give it 5 stars. Someone made the mistake of introducing him to the Food Wars anime and things have gone downhill since then.
Matt: Not basing this on something I wrote a few month ago, but I feel as if he loves eggs. It doesn't have to do with him being a softie and remembering one particular night in the Digital World or anything.
Gabumon: Definitely a meat 'mon. He's apparently very fond of yakitori.
Sora: Whenever asked, she says onigiri, but she likes any traditional food, really. She likes thinking about how long food traditions have lasted (yes, that's a thing, I guess--)
Biyomon: She likes bananas because they're similar to that one food in the Digital World (unless I'm remembering incorrectly)
Izzy: Based on (1) line in the English dub, jelly beans. I will not explain.
Tentomon: He weirdly enough enjoys saltine crackers. Maybe too much. Izzy has been trying to wean him off of them.
Mimi: She misses the pizza from New York. Also cheesecake.
Palmon: For some reason, she loves strawberries.
Joe: Loves most dishes that involve fish and endures Gomamon expounding about how much of a betrayal this is
Gomamon: Jokes that he likes fish, but that's not true. He does like fish sticks, though. They're weirdly good--
T.K.: He likes chocolate a lot, probably because he receives mountains of them on Valentine's Day. Someone take the sugar away from him.
Patamon: Also partial to chocolate, but he also really enjoys French fries for some reason???
Kari: Crepes and ice cream, especially when her brother pays for them
Gatomon: She likes most chicken and fish dishes, but she really loves the cookies Kari makes her.
Davis: This is an easy one---ramen.
Veemon: He's not picky. You could give him burnt marshmallows and he'd consider them fine cuisine. (He and Agumon get along very well.)
Yolei: For some reason, she really likes French toast. Or regular toast. She doesn't watch anime that features heroines running with toast in their mouths I SWEAR---
Hawkmon: He enjoys eating all kinds of sushi, and he somehow holds chopsticks perfectly despite the feathers.
Cody: Melon bread. No explanation. Just melon bread.
Armadillomon: He considers potato chips a godsend. Also the applesauce that comes in a pouch.
Ken: He's partial to rice or chicken noodle soup because he likes food that fills him with warmth. They're both simple but very comforting.
Wormmon: He likes anything involving noodles because they're easier to eat with his mouth. Udon is one of his favorites.

An Avid Foodie’s Guide To Night City
/ / Incoming Transmission / /
< / PART 2: A Hungry South Indian’s Guide to Night City>
Good day to you beautiful folks in Night City! if you are like me; a disgruntled, hungry, often sad foodie who came to Night City with the hopes of making it Big then this article is for you! That’s right! because you can never hope to conquer the streets of night city on an empty stomach ( assuming you do have one..) . and I'm not talking about Kibble or those nasty Prepacks from All Foods or Synth food that makes you stomach CHURN ( God! I hate the Eezy Beef! ). I'm talking bout fresh food folks (that ought to get your attention!) , what most people may not know is that Fresh food ain't just the luxury of the Elite or the filthy rich. You common sheep too can get to savor the flavors of fresh food in the Streets and beyond that is if you know where to look and only if you have the right connections. ( You guys can thank me later! ). So here is a full day of my eating escapades in Night City.
A brief note on Indian food. Indian Cuisine has a multitude of flavors but  Indians really do like spicy food and most dishes here have a spicy undertone. But there is no dearth of sweet food here. Indian cuisine is a melting pot of varied cultures and that just makes it worthy to be in the market stalls of Night City as well; Spicy, Feisty, sometimes sweet but it  always makes you want to have more!
1. 8:00 AM < // Wake The F**k Up Samurai! // >
Wake up early and head downtown. There is a very successful little store by the name of Ambrosia. Head over there for the best Kibble you'll ever have in your life time. Now you may thinking “What Kibble? That bland, grainy, dry stuff ? ” Well yes. You see, my friend Laila who runs Ambrosia has cracked the code for making Kibble taste great. The secret? Just add delectable Indian Spice Mix to them but the rest of the process though is pretty much as closed lipped as Arasaka Tower. But who cares? If you want the most nutritious, soft, aromatic and tastiest breakfast yet, give it a go. Truly it is a feast worthy for gods.

 2. 11:00 AM < // Time For some snacks // >
Well it’s Almost Mid-day and I already feel hungry so I head to Pacifica. I have a good frenemy named Josh there that sells these amazing one of a kind banana chips form South India. The perfect combination of crusty texture, crispy feels, yellowish glow and the glory that is fried food. The Indomitable Fried banana chips. These are available for a very hefty price in the American markets but because you know me and Josh you may get it at a discount. It also comes in a nifty protective package for eating on the go. Just don’t take Jobs from Josh. There is a reason why we are frenemies.

 3. 2: 00 PM (Nearby Pacifica) < / A drink for every occasion / >
A Merc in Night City can’t function on an empty stomach or low energy levels. Luckily for us, my brothas from the Animals have a solution for that. They have got a great cocktail of muscle building boosters, fresh strawberries, Lime, bananas and vodka, perfect for keeping those gains on the road or while fighting the bad guys. Where do they get these strawberries and Bananas from? Well lets just say they are not just pumped up freaks and they do know a bit about greenhouses too. It is possible to be barely natty in Night City too.  I present thee the drink dubbed “ Strawberry Pump Haze 3XT ”.
Tumblr media
5.  6: 00 PM < // Some more snacks by the Pier // >
In the bustling markets of the piers you will find a small, and very shanty looking store by the name of Singh’s Chow. At first glace it may not be much but in actuality it is a very successful smuggling front for premium Indian Spices. If you are an immigrant Indian like me this is the go to place if you want to bathe in the nosh-talgia of home. [ This was pretty difficult to find but I have my sources ] . Although be warned, they do not take kindly to strangers meddling in their business so it will be good to establish a rapport with them or have an Indian friend recommend you as a customer. It is home to the only place where you’ll find an Indian take on a dumpling or pierogi. It is a sweet dish made with wheat with fillings of coconut, brown sugar and a whole lot of goodness.
Tumblr media
4.  9:00 PM < // To The Afterlife Choombas! // >
Now after a long day of eating, evading the Police, Gangsters and doing Merc jobs it is best to head to the Afterlife to wind down (Albeit with a gun in hand though). For The Men among Boys do yourself a favor and get the Club  Exclusive Johnny Silverhand. Waft in its glory, Get High and Get Moving for we always have some barbeque, steaks and Parottas to burn.
Tumblr media
5. 11:00 PM  < // Somewhere in the Badlands // >
Now because it is the weekend and I have got nothing better to do, I head out to the badlands. A few months ago I had to Win a death race in my pursuit of exploring the tastes of Night City or its Peripheries. Fast forward a month I am now thick friends with a tight knit nomad group that mainly consists of immigrants from India (Name classified). The Fourth Corporate War was not kind to their livelihood and they were forced to settle in the Badlands taking up illegal smuggling from India to the United States and vice-versa. Now these guys are the real deal. they can get access to a lot of Livestock. Don't know how they get it though. Today I was invited to a weekly community barbeques and I offered my services to cook them a proper Indian dish; The Chicken Biriyani . they just had to get the ingredients. Trust me when I say “ Trust the Nomads”  cos they can get any ingredient you want! So here I was preparing the dish in the open flame. Basking under the Night Sky with a few friends I had made along the way. A perfect ending to a perfect day.
Tumblr media
< // Tune in Next Time for news on the best chows and drinks in Night City. Next up is a special mystery edition //>
Until then this is Avid Foodie chippin' out !
P.S :
These dishes are traditionally found in many South Indian homes, and as South Indians can be found almost anywhere around the world (This is a standing joke among us). I thought that maybe Night City too would have its own share of South Indian people. Now the Dishes in their traditional names are given below:
1. The grainy looking stuff: Its famously known as the Poha
2. Banana Chips are famously known as Malabar chips.
3. The Rice with Chicken : Biriyani (This tends to have a lot of variants from place to place)
4. The bite sized dumpling: Unniyappam
I genuinely think that dishes have proved their mettle to be in the market stalls of Night City.

Aizawa, We Agreed No More Cats: Chapter 6
5:28 AM
Existence Is A Prison
feral cat dad: I swear to god, if you say you're going out for a run, Katsuki.
deku deck-you: ...
deku deck-you: I'm totally not going out for a run.
feral cat dad: Kid, you don't need permission or even to tell us. You're allowed around school grounds, to leave, to the school, ya know. As long as you have your pass for the door, you're good, nothing's stopping you.
deku deck-you: I don't need to tell you where I am?
feral cat dad: No, what you do is your own business. Me and UA are just here to house and teach you. Your actions are your own, you don't have to tell us them.
deku deck-you: Oh.
feral cat dad: It's okay if you want to, but you never have to feel obligated to tell me or anyone else, either.
deku deck-you: It's just my mom made me tell her what I was doing every time I left the house.
feral cat dad: Well, I mean, I obviously know what you're doing every morning at 5:30. So, even if I'm worried, I know what you were doing. I'm also not your mom, I don't want to know where you are every second because you're a kid being a kid, you deserve some privacy. God knows you need privacy after not seeming to have it for fifteen years.
deku deck-you: Thank you, Mr. Aizawa.
feral cat dad: You can call me Dad if you want.
deku deck-you: Dad.
farmer toshi: Child-hoarding Dad.
feral cat dad: You're not wrong.
5:33 AM
Existence Is A Prison
farmer toshi: @deku deck-you, I'm coming, Kats. Wait up.
deku deck-you: Come on then, hurry up.
deku deck-you: You get those wires off today, right?
farmer toshi: Yup. Recovery Girl's fixing me today.
1:16 PM
Existence Is A Prison
farmer toshi: It's official. I can menace once again.
feral cat dad: If you're terrorizing villagers, please don't bring them back armed with pitchforks, I don't like fire.
5:25 AM
Existence Is A Prison
farmer toshi: Kats, where are you, I don't see you.
farmer toshi: @deku deck-you Did you get up early or something?
farmer toshi: Hey, @foil-mecha, Tokoyami, you're in room 9. Have you heard anything in his room?
foil-mecha: His phone pinged when you @ed him. And I swear I heard him moving around a bit earlier.
farmer toshi: Do you think he's okay? Maybe he's sleeping again?
foil-mecha: No, usually he's up for the day once he's up.
feral cat dad: God, did he push himself too much to recover quickly?
President Megaphone: I'm in early, I'm coming over and checking on him since you're in not position to help him if he's hurt, Shouta.
feral cat dad: Fine.
6:35 AM
Existence Is A Prison
foil-mecha: Is Katsuki okay?
farmer toshi: He fine, just malnourished. He passed out after he woke up, ended up hitting his head a little on the ground, and getting a minor concussion.
gay salt: How!?
deku deck-you: I thought our parents were the ones that paid for our groceries but my parents have told me they won't do it.
feral cat dad: Don't worry about him and his stubbornness, I'll be bringing him to the store later once he feels better and making him pick up foods.
ranch flavored jello: Katsuki! The card you got! The barcode! You just scan the barcode! UA pays for your food while you're in the dorms!
deku deck-you: I know that now, Toru. I thought our family or parents paid for our food.
4:16 PM
Existence Is A Prison
feral cat dad: Okay, get dressed and get a list if you want, kid. What foods do you like?
deku deck-you: Well, I'm allergic to shellfish.
feral cat dad: You've been eating with us all week and you didn't tell us you were allergic to something?
deku deck-you: I avoided things that had shellfish in them.
feral cat dad: Katsuki.
deku deck-you: You act like my mother didn't practically force me to have allergic reactions when she was tired of me.
feral cat dad: You're right, I do act like that because that's not okay. It's abuse, Katsuki, and I want you to be safe and happy. So please, tell me if you can't or even don't want to eat something.
deku deck-you: Alright.
feral cat dad; Okay, anything else you're allergic to?
deku deck-you: No, just shellfish.
feral cat dad; Anything you particularly like?
deku deck-you: Mackerel with spinach, mushrooms, and chili oil.
feral cat dad: Then we'll grab the stuff for you.
President Megaphone: I'll spoil you, kid, I'm your uncle now.
deku deck-you: If you plan on spoiling me, get me those sausages that look like octopi. I love them but I haven't been allowed to buy them for around five years.
President Megaphone: I swear, Shouta, this nephew will get all the sausages. UA is willing to buy.
feral cat dad: I know, but don't go all 'grab it all' at the store, Hizashi, the kid can grab his own food at his own pace. You can pick him up extra ones whenever. We're letting him pick up his own groceries probably for the first time in his life. Don't overwhelm him.
foil-mecha: Can you pick me up boiled octopus and baby sardines, Mr. Aizawa?
feral cat dad: Sure, I'll grab you a bunch of fish, kid.
foil-mecha: Much appreciated.
deku deck-you: Is there a limit I can use?
feral cat dad: No, there isn't. UA is full of future heroes who will likely need to build muscle to save others, to do that, you need to eat well, Nezu's rule for us dorm kids has always been to make sure we eat, he doesn't care how much it costs as long as you're healthy.
deku deck-you: Wow, that's actually. Just wow.
farmer toshi: Your shitty parents put you on a budget, huh?
deku deck-you: Usually I had to cost less than 1,000¥ per week. It was hard, especially building muscle to be a hero. I ate rice and eggs a lot so I wasn't completely starving but it was always hard living with them.
ranch flavored jello: Aren't your parents like famous or something? Why did they want you to be on a budget?
deku deck-you: They didn't like dealing with me besides to scream at me. I think it was to keep me from leaving them. They'd hand me exactly 1,000¥ every week I had to use my money for food because they wouldn't buy food for me after I turned 5. Then they'd still tell me what I couldn't buy.
foil-mecha: I feel great rage toward your parents and I hope they have a horrible life now without you.
deku deck-you: I do too, don't worry.
4:30 PM
Existence Is A Prison
deku deck-you has started a video call
Hey, Kats, how's your shopping going? -foil-mecha
Are you upside down, Tokoyami? Why are you...? -deku deck-you
I'm on the couch. I refuse to sit correctly. -foil-mecha
Dad and Uncle Zashi are off getting dinner for tonight because Dad's getting a little souped out. So they're picking up some stuff for that and I didn't want to feel alone. -deku deck-you
Hey, little bro. -farmer toshi
I turn 16 tomorrow for your information. Call me 'little bro'. I'm probably the oldest of us kids in the dorms right now. -deku deck-you
I turn 16 tomorrow. -farmer toshi
Oh my god, I practically have twin sons now. -feral cat dad
Deal with it, Dad. -farmer toshi
Looks like I'm going over to the cake section and picking up two cakes. - President Megaphone
Strawberry. -farmer toshi
You don't have to. -deku deck-you
No, I don't have to, but I'm going to. -President Megaphone
Anything. -deku deck-you
You're getting your own cake, Katsuki. I'm not just gonna pick you up anything. What's your favorite cake flavor?  C'mon, little listener.-President Megaphone
I don't know. I've never had cake before. -deku deck-you
So a variety cake. I can work with that. -President Megaphone
Hey, Kats, can you grab those meat buns and red bean buns in the red bag to your right for me? -nat20
Yeah, okay. -deku deck-you
You're amazing. -nat20
What have you picked out so far, Kats? -ranch flavored jello
Uh, mushrooms, spinach, bean sprouts, eggs, mackerel, and Seiko's bun thing. I'm in the meat section so I'll probably pick up two of those...-deku deck-you
Two of what? -saviour
I got em. Those octopus sausages. I found them. I'm getting two of them.  Are you guys sure I'm not spending too much? -deku deck-you
Pick up anything you will either eat or give to someone else who will eat it. -feral cat dad
As long as you're sure. -deku deck-you
What'd you pick up, twinsie? -farmer toshi
Boiled octopus, bacon, ham, chicken, another two sets of the buns. -deku deck-you
Are you picking up things to eat with rice and eggs out of habit, Kats? -foil-mecha
I wanna buy what I know I like first before I buy things I won't eat. I already hate spending money as it is. -deku deck-you
Reasonable. Just make sure you pick up snacks for yourself since training for a Sports Festival takes a lot out of you. -feral cat dad
I am. Ooh, yoghurt. -deku deck-you
I'm right here, Katsuki. -feral cat dad
Hi, Dad. Alright, I'm ending this. Y'all text me if you want something else. -deku deck-you
Bye, twinsie. -farmer toshi
deku deck-you has ended the video call
5:30 PM
Existence Is A Prison
President Megaphone: I'm getting started on dinner. Should be done by 7.
deku deck-you: Can I eat my ice cream?
feral cat dad: You're allowed to eat whatever and whenever.
deku deck-you: I know, I just worry. It'll go away, I hope. I just get worried.
feral cat dad: Getting worried is normal. I was too when I was in your position.
deku deck-you: You were in my position?
feral cat dad: Kind of. Back then, fifteen years ago, there was no teacher or other students in the dorms, just me and Nezu. I was fresh from nine years in a foster home that would spend the money meant to support me on their own son.
feral cat dad: For the first month, I didn't buy myself food. I'd eat breakfast and lunch on school days and skip dinner and meals on weekends because I was scared of spending UA's money.
feral cat dad: After almost a month with no financial transactions on my account and the Sports Festival coming up, Nezu did a surprise inspection and flipped out when there was no food in the kitchen. He forced me to the store and made me buy dinner for us two because he wouldn't allow a student under his roof to not have food for themselves.
feral cat dad: Nezu sat me down and told me the same thing I told you and, after the Sports Festival, I actually bought myself and four friends dinner at a nice restaurant to celebrate me and my friend's winning tie and I paid the bill without even thinking about it.
gay salt: Wait, there was a tie at the sports festival?
feral cat dad: The first year rounds fifteen years ago, the only winning tie because we refused to fight again.
gay salt: I'll have to watch that and see my badass teacher fighting.
feral cat dad: The sports festivals are all free to watch on your televisions in your rooms, no need to pay to watch on YouTube.

New Beginnings Ch. 7
Timothy Thatcher x OC
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: none
Tim looked over at her discreetly he witnessed her trying to open a jar and cleaned his hands on his already stained shirt “I got that for you”   “And I got this for you” she said as she went into her small closet in the living room and pulled out a flannel shirt  “It’s my dads, I don’t wanna see you in a bloody dried up t shirt as we make dinner”   He nodded quickly as he took off his shirt and unbuttoned on the one she gave him Maya blushed as she grilled her ground turkey and noticed how chiseled he was, his upper chest having the perfect amount of body hair and peaks, his biceps bulging out nicely but not overly muscular or anything like that    “It fits” Tim grinned as he showed her  “Not that bad on you” she admits with a small grin “Plaid is definitely your style, I like it on you” “I-I don’t deserve you being so nice to me” he said quietly “Maya, I won’t ever be able to stop saying sorry to you ever, know that. I’m probably gonna say sorry to you for as long as I know you”   “Tim, when’s your birthday ?” Maya asked suddenly as she looked at him “I know it’s 1983 but month ? What month ?”  “March….March 17th” he answered slowly “why ?”   “Oh my god you’re a Pisces, suddenly everything makes sense wow” she nodded as she laughed “Gosh you fit it to a T, you’re a water sign”    “What does that have to do with anything ? A water sign ? What the hell is that ?” Tim asked confused as he put his cutting board down   “It’s your sign Tim” she chuckled “Your sign is a Pisces which makes sense because they’re...well you are considered to have a sign that is known for its over sensitivity, self-pitying but also very selfless and very accepting”    “Oh” he said softly “well I guess yeah, kinda is me. My mother says it’s because I’m an only child and never got to experience things other children got at my age since I also stayed with my grandmother a lot. I think that made me highly sensitive”   “You call it highly sensitive, I call it highly aware” she grinned as she took the carrots and celery from him and added them to a pan to saute   Tim observed as sat on a stool by her “what are you making ? It looks kinda complicated honestly” “Bolognese” Maya says “Though I’m kind of cheating because I’m using sauce from a jar, but I promise it’ll be good”   “Oh” he nodded “I don’t cook much honestly, I only have ever made chicken or ham and it’s typically without seasoning. Same with my rice, I stick to bland foods for the most part. I broke my diet when we went to that Korean BBQ place” Tim said softly as he reached over and cut up onion for her    “Glad I got you to change things up for a bit, though you ghosted me and acted like a child afterwards and ruined me introducing you to better places” she giggled   “I’m gonna age myself here a bit but um, what’s ghosted ?” he asked with genuine interest as he looked down at her   “It means ignore, basically a millennial way of saying you ignored me” she answered back  “Ah I see, I like that...ghosted. I’m adding that to my vocabulary” he nodded as he repeated the word under his breath as he chopped   “Gosh he’s cute” Maya thought to herself as he stood only inches away from him, their arms basically touching as she sauteed. She made sure she stayed in close distance as she cooked looking around as silence began to take over   “Since you were a dick to me, you have to be really nice to me now like really nice” she said with a smile  “I will do whatever you want or need me to do” Tim smiled at her with his dimple popping out more “Kiss me” she whispered nervously as she looked into his eyes    “Like...like right now ?” he asked nervously “o-okay...I’m not that good at it though and my beard is gonna scratch, my lips are kinda dry too and-” he stopped blubbering when he felt her soft lips gently press onto his as she carefully put his hands on her waist as he leaned in more and placed hers on his cheeks    Maya grinned up at him afterwards as she gently wiped his lips and put ice back on his face “go sit with this on while I finish here and by the way, you’re a good kisser”  He chuckled as nodded and sat on her couch “well thank you, haven’t heard that one in like 5 years at least”. Tim sat quietly as he iced his face trying to make sense of what had just happened. Just 6 hours ago he had told her horrible things and now here was having just had a make out session in her kitchen as they cooked dinner together. Tim looked around as he picked up magazines she had on her coffee table and looked through them smiling when he realized they were all her covers or features. One in particular catching his eye, a feature in a parenting magazine where she was holding a baby on her lap.    “Last year” Maya grinned “I typically don’t do those kinds but they needed a model last minute and I happened to be in the area and went in. It was fun, kids and babies were great to work with honestly and now what I expected. That little one stole my heart, made me think I wanted my own for a bit”    “You think about kids ? Not in a weird day of course, just since like me you’re an only child” she asked “I mean yeah, sometimes” he admits quietly “Granted I really thought I was gonna stop wrestling when I was like 30 and settle down and have that white picket fence life everyone else had but clearly life has passed me by. But I’ve had some other good things in life, experiences and memories not everyone has had in life. I’m not one to complain, you ?” Tim asked as he looked at her   “Sometimes I want 1, sometimes none and other times I want like 5” Maya chuckled
“5 ?” Tim laughed “That’s a basketball team right there, Jesus that’d be feeding an army daily”   “Which is why then I think maybe not having them at all would be more beneficial” she laughed “I’ve got time to think about it thankfully, like 5 more years”   “Enjoy your youth, and your job. It’s interesting, really it is Maya” Tim says genuinely “You’ve been to some amazing places, you have experiences most won’t get and you’re only 25. It’s amazing truly”  Maya grinned at him as she fixed the ice pack on his face “I appreciate that, but your face will appreciate this ice way way more”. Damn, kissing him must’ve been the best thing she felt in ages, she could tell he wanted it just as bad as she did yet kept his usual calm demeanor. She came out of her daze as she heard her her cell phone buzz, muttering quietly as Marcel’s pet name appeared  “Dinner tomorrow is still on ?” “Yeah….but let’s meet somewhere, I think I’m ready to tell Tim the truth” Maya sighed as his name quickly appeared on her screen and declined his facetime requests and calls immediately  “Answer me please, Maya just don’t do it today please. Let’s meet tomorrow and we can figure something out...please ?” “Fine, I won’t do it tonight but I’m doing it soon, I like him a lot and I’m not gonna keep secrets from him Marcel, and neither should you. I’ll text you tomorrow morning” she sent as she put her phone on silent and set their plates up She went to the bathroom as she wiped her residue makeup off her face and put her hair up in a ponytail to fresh up, applying some perfume lightly as she looked herself over and left the bathroom    “Oh” she whispered as she saw Tim sleeping on her couch, giving soft snores as his arms were crossed on his chest. Even in his sleep he wasn’t relaxed, it kinda looked like he was just closing his eyes to her and waiting to spook her any second. She contemplated waking him up for a second and went to touch his shoulder, but instead decided to graze his cheek with the back of her hand gently, covering him up with her throw she had on the couch.  Maya shrugged as she turned on the tv and sat on the opposite end as she stuffed spoonfuls of pasta into her mouth watching Real Housewives of New Jersey, shaking her head at the stupid drama on her television shifting when she heard Tim move around and groan   “What ? What happened ?” Tim asked with a groan as he stretched “did I fall asleep here ?” “You did” she nodded “only been like an hour and a half, now please get yourself a plate and don’t bother me for the next 20 minutes because Teresa Giudice is about to cause drama at this fashion show so shhh”   He raised his brow in confusion as he stood up and served himself a plate and sat next to her going back and forth between her reactions and the tv screen in front of him “Did she just call her an old hag and a bitch ?”    “Tim shh” she put a finger to his lips absentmindedly Tim nodded quickly as he leaned back into the couch and ate, speaking up when the show was over with wide eyes “That was… a lot. Is all reality tv like this ?”  “Only the best” Maya laughed “and by the way, sorry for shushing you like that” He shrugged “I deserve more than that”  “Tim, as of tonight we drop it” she turned to look at him “Please” Maya cleaned up thinking what the hell she got herself into with him, this wasn’t in her character at all. One second she was ready to see him drop dead 8 floors to the ground and the next she was making out with him in her kitchen. This was new territory she was going into and deep down it felt right, it felt right to kiss him and feel his touch and she could feel he was feeling the same way. She turned her head , gasping as she bumped into him    “Yes ?” she whispered “Maya, I like you” Tim said “I like you a lot...and I feel like if I don’t tell you now that it’s just us here in a comfortable environment I probably won’t say it again. This isn’t like me one bit” he admits “I’ll be honest yeah I’ve had girlfriends, I dated women here and there but I never felt like this…”    “Like how ?” she asked softly  “Scared, scared that when I was with you I liked who I was for once, I felt at ease and like I didn’t need to put the harsh wrestling persona up. You didn’t care or give it much thought either or pestered me like some others had in the past. And I just wanna say-” “Tim shut the fuck up and just kiss me already” she said softly    And he did. He kissed her deeply as he moved his hands down to her hips and lifted her with ease onto her kitchen countertop feeling her hands move up and down his chest. It wasn’t just a long kiss, it was several kisses with small breaks in between to ensure they could catch their breath as their hands roamed freely all over each other's bodies. Maya unbuttoned the first 3 buttons off his shirt as she lightly traced his chest with her nails as her forehead pressed against his “we should go to my room….we don’t have to you know...have sex but we can just do more of this there comfortably”   “Okay” he nodded as he took her hand and followed her into her room, looking around at the pristine condition everything was in. A vanity organized with makeup items and skin care products he couldn’t even name, her bed perfectly made and covered in pillows, a closet the size of his bedroom with clothes in every color of the rainbow. Everything so neat and luxurious, everything he didn’t have.   She leaned up against him she kissed him again, this time with more dominance as she stumbled onto her bed on top of him, feeling his hands lightly on her lower back    Tim pulled apart from her as he rubbed his slightly red lips and pet her hair gently with his hand “I haven’t had anything like that in a while” he admitted with a small grin    “Neither have I’ she chuckled, licking her lips feeling them swell “It’s like free lip filler” “Always a comedian” Tim laughed genuinely sitting up on her bed “Jesus it’s 11 already and I gotta walk back to my car to get home, I got tapings tomorrow”   “Just stay here and I’ll take you back in the morning, it’ll be early I promise” she said softly as she gave a comforting grin “Okay, I”ll take the couch though. I’m not sleeping in your bed, this was a one time thing that I typically don’t let happen”    “What a gentleman you are” Maya said as she brought him a pillow and blanket “I’ve got all the works on my tv so feel free to watch what you like, bathroom is right next to the closet”    “Thanks, I appreciate it really” She got up in the morning as she turned off her alarm and got ready for the day, taking a peek and seeing Tim up and sitting as he watched tv making different facial expressions  “What are you watching ?” she chuckled as she walked out and turned on her Nespresso machine “Danielle is a mess, I get why you watch this trashy stuff. It’s addicting” he shook his head as he turned it off  Maya laughed as she took out two mugs from her cabinet “Well now you know and let me guess, you take your black ?” “ Yeah” He nodded as he got up and sat on a stool    “I got a shoot in like an hour so I probably won’t be able to talk to you for most of today” she said softly as she packed her bag “chances are till late late tonight”   “Oh….well um I was hoping if you’re able to, I actually have a taping tomorrow and I wanted to ask you if you would like to attend ? It’s about 2 hours, it’s fun even for someone like you who’s never been around wrestling” Never been around wrestling, after a great night she remembered the big mess she had yet to talk to him about. Marcel, shit.    “I’ll try my hardest” she responded with a grin as she drove them back to his car “Thanks again for driving me here, I appreciate it have a good shoot” he nodded as he lingered for a while leaning in slowly as he pet her cheek with his hand and kissed her “Um I think your friend over there saw us” Maya laughed softly as she pointed to an opened mouthed Oney at the gym entrance    Tim chuckled and shook his head as he got out “I’m not gonna hear the end of this one, I’ll text you later, have a good work day” he smiled softly as he walked away “Is that….you have a ?, speak up already” Oney pushed as he followed him to his car “you can’t just not tell me what’s going on after kissing someone like THAT” He turned around as he got out his gym bag “excuse me ? what do you mean like that ? what’s with the emphasis on the end there ?”    Oney shook his head as he gave a scoff “Do you have any idea who that is ? What kind of work she does ?”
“Uh yeah she’s a mode” Tim nodded as they walked inside “I’ve seen her stuff, she showed me and talked to me all about it”
“I can’t believe you’re dating a model man, you of all people. No offense of course but I mean I never pictured you even dating someone at all”
Tim raised a brow “I’m that bad of a catch huh ? Gee I feel great now that you’ve given me this amazing pep talk, feeling like I can conquer the world now” he answered sarcastically stretching
“How old is she ?” Oney asked “because there’s no way she’s older than 30”
“25….” he said softly “she’s 25, just turned 25 actually about 2 months ago”
“WHAT ?” Oney said as he spit out his water “No fucking way, you’re dating a 25 year old ?”
“Would you stop, we’re not dating…….we’re friends that’s all” he answered as he began his cardio
“Oh yeah because you totally suck face with a friend before leaving right ?” Oney chuckled “You’re in deep, you did the cheek grab and the little linger after you kiss” “Well maybe I like her, friends right now but who knows maybe after she comes to the show might change” he gave a smile “I invited her and she said she’ll come” “Who are you and what have you done to my friend ?” Oney asked with a raised brow “Because you are not the Tim I know” “Let’s just say maybe I wanna enjoy life a bit more” He shrugged “and I’m starting with her, she likes me. I like her, there’s nothing that can go wrong” Nothing right ?

A Lot of Words about a Thing
This is a “I’m writing this out so next time someone asks I can just point them to this (or copy/paste) instead of having to type it again” thing.
I’ve been doing Hello Fresh for the last two or three months and I thought I’d talk about the ups and downs of it and if I’m going to keep doing it.  This is not an endorsement (which will be clear when you get to the overall middling scoring), but I will put a link at the bottom so we can both get a deal if you want to try it.
---------------
So anyway, I had been thinking about doing a meal kit for a long time but pulled the trigger on it back in... like Mid-January, I guess?
the tl;dr of it all is that I like it and I’ll probably keep doing it for awhile, but it’s not for everyone, and is expensive for what it is, especially if you already know how to cook.
Before I started, I made myself sit down and write out a quick list of what I wanted to get out of trying a meal kit experience, so I’ll rate how successful or not each one of those things is.
First of all, I want to also say, I can already cook.  I’m a pretty good cook.  I can follow a recipe and improvise successfully when necessary usually.  One reason why a lot of people do a meal kit is because they need to learn how to cook and that definitely wasn’t me.
Also, they offer a variety of number and portions on meals to try.  I get three meals a week, with two portions a meal, which means I cook Hello Fresh for dinner one night, and usually the next night have the leftovers.  Friday night is usually “Yay You Made It To The Weekend, You Get To Order Takeout” night.  You can order for several more meals a week, and for up to four portions in each meal, if you want.
So on to the reasons why I decided to try HF, with a grading of how I feel about each one after trying.
Reason One: Try Something New
I was super excited at the beginning of the pandemic now working from home full time, because this was a great chance to really start trying some new recipes.  I had fallen into a pretty bad rut for awhile of some of the same frozen type meals or just making super easy things for dinner and sandwiches for lunch pre-pandemic.  Even though my commute was stupid easy I often felt too wiped at the end of the day to make like, real meals.  So when the pandemic hit and I was Home All The Time, for the first couple of months I was buying interesting ingredients (what I could get my hands on at the time) and really digging into making new and interesting things.  Even baking my own bread and bought some new kitchen gadgets like a pressure cooker to expand my repertoire.
By like... the end of summer... well the good news was that I was still cooking and hadn’t fallen back to a packaged-food routine most of the time (though still some frozen pizzas or bags of pre-made Asian or Italian food you cook on the stovetop mostly for lunch) but also I had more or less found The Ten Things I Make (like Spaghetti, a great chicken and rice dish that is so good and makes about 6 meals worth of leftovers) and I was real tired of like, recipe hunting.  The most work I was then doing was finding new pressure cooker recipes and tbh almost all of what I was making was Chicken In Some Kind of Sauce Over Rice.  I was burned out.
So Hello Fresh... has been great for that.  I have only made the same thing a couple of times and those were only because i loved them so much the first time I wanted that thing again.  For the most part, I have tried just a ton of new things, including some ingredients I’ve never worked with before or really thought I wouldn’t like!  And I did!  I feel like I am often trying something I have never made before.
Reason 1.5: Variety
OK this is hand-in-hand with Something New but also slightly different.
Try Something New would be rated like a 4.5 out of 5 stars.... but some stars are taken away though, because a lot of their recipes are very similar.  For a protein, there’s like, chicken breasts, hamburger meat, pork chops, chicken sausage and pork sausage.  Occasionally steak.  Basically every meal will start with one of those things.... oh and I guess there’s like some fish choices, but I hate fish.  There’s also vegetarian options, which I have only occasionally gotten.  So within the variety, there’s a lot of similarities.
Also there are a lot of same ingredients in their recipes.  I have grated a lot of lemons and limes.  I have chopped up a lot of carrots, green onions, and potatoes (so many potatoes.)  I have consumed more sour cream than I ever have.  I have started looking for ways to add even a little more variety to the things that are often-repeats that they give you.
But part of that is my fault -- I am mostly selecting items that I know I will like, or can modify to how I like.  There are a lot of veggie and fish-based choices I could pick up most weeks which I avoid.
And almost everything I’ve ever made... I’d make again.  I save all the recipe cards so that someday when I don’t wanna do HF anymore, I will have all them all handy to make later.  The HF Subreddit also has a lot of resources like how to do their custom spice mixes, very handy.   There’s been maybe 3 things I’ve made which I’d say were Just Okay, but nothing I’d say that was bad.   And some of the ideas in this paragraph I talk about more, further down.
But also on the topic of “Variety” -- since every meal I make has two portions (occasionally I will stretch something to three) -- points are given back because I’m not “Making a huge pot of spaghetti that I eat for five meals in a row.”  So that’s good, even if it means more cooking overall.
So honestly, on Something New overall, I’ll give this like a 3.5 out of 5 stars, correcting up to 4 stars on a curve, since I strike entire categories of their offerings based on my own tastes.  They offer a pretty good variety of meals to select, and part of the problem here is my fault for hating All Seafood and not being thrilled with the vegetarian options (I also don’t feel like I’m getting my money’s worth without a protein) so there are a lot of meals re-using similar ingredients.   It slides back down to a 3.5 though when you factor in Reasons 3 & 4 below.
Reason Two: Kill Analysis Paralysis
A thing I found increasingly happening by the end of last year was analysis paralysis.  Especially as I started a new job where I’m much, much busier (but happier) in October.  I would find myself staring at the fact that I’d have to make the decision on What To Make For Dinner and dreading it more and more.  It wasn’t really the cooking I hated, but the deciding what to cook, which got me into the lack of variety rut.  More often than I’d like to admit I’d just make a box of Kraft Mac & Cheese or like... just... toast... for dinner because the decision-making part of my brain was tired... or out of spoons as the kids say these days.
This is maybe my favorite part of Hello Fresh overall.  Once every week or two I log onto HF, pick what I’m going to eat like... 5 or 6 weeks in the future, which I can do at a time when I have that decision-making energy, and forget about it.  Every Monday a box shows up on my doorstep, I see what nice things I picked out for myself several weeks ago, and the most I have to decide is which order I will make those things in.
So when it’s a “Make Dinner” day, I don’t have that “shit, I have to make a decision” feeling.  I already know because I pre-planned it back when I wasn’t at the end of a long workday.  It’s one of those small, dumb things that really really helps me mentally in an almost inexplicable way.  And I can feel better about myself because I didn’t eat something dumb for dinner.  And I still allow myself to make easy things for lunch, like a small frozen pizza, a sandwich and some chips, or hey, Kraft Dinner.  And sometimes I do make a big pot of Spaghetti or something that I love and will just have that for lunch every day for a week, and so I don’t have to feel like I’m always cooking.
And on Eat HF Leftovers For Dinner nights, that’s even better, because I have a tasty meal and it just had to get reheated in the microwave or stovetop.  Some meals are easy to half-prepare ahead of time on day one, and just do the last steps on leftover night the next night to have fresher dinner easily.
Just 5 out of 5 stars here.  This is my favorite part.
Reason Three: Eat More Vegetables.
Uh, yeah, I’m terrible about eating veggies on my own.  The best I can do usually is buy a bag of mixed greens and try to have a side salad with dinner, or buy bags of frozen foods and hope they come with veggies I’d eat.
So the good thing here, is that when HF sends me vegetables to make, if it’s a veggie I like, I’ll probably make it.
The big problem, though, is that there’s no substitutions.  And I’m still not gonna eat brussell sprouts or, broccoli, or mushrooms. I was a sport and tried making them (except the mushrooms) the first time I got recipes that used them as sides.  And nope... still cant.
But hey, I have done a lot better at eating more fresh green beans, and onions, and carrots, and peppers.  Though sometimes I just snack on the bell pepper instead of cooking it. Still, I call it a win.
I really, really wish I could trade out the side-dish vegetables I know I won’t eat for like, a small side salad, an apple, or hey, even just... carrots!  But nope, no substitutions. =\  I’d score this way better if we could do so.
Still, I’m doing better here, and overall, more vegetables are being eaten.  So, 3 out of 5 stars.
Reason Four: Waste Less Food
The amount of fruit and vegetables I’ve ordered and thrown away over the last year make me cringe.  I would order things with every intention of eating them and then just... not.  Oh yeah I need two lemons, an orange and two limes in case I make ____ recipe!  I need a new bag of baby carrots to snack on and make a side dish and cut into a salad!
And then I maybe... maybe use half of that before it goes bad.
Probably less.  Because of the Analysis Paralysis and not trying new things.  You run into that problem where you don’t have the ingredients on hand to make a new thing so you can’t make a new thing... but then you buy them but forgot (crucial thing) so the thing still doesn’t get made.  Or you just... don’t plan when you’re gonna make the thing and by the time I’d be like “Oh yeah I should make something with those vegetables” they’d have already turned.
SO... I felt shitty throwing away so much produce, and loaves of bread, and other perishable food that got maybe half-eaten.  So much, for so long.  Yeah, I know I could do better with my meal planning, but it’s been one of those things I always vow to do, and then did not do that thing.
Doing HF has really made me re-evaluate what I buy as groceries, and I have cut way down on ordering unnecessary produce and perishables like bread.  Because I don’t really have to worry about dinner and am allowing myself to do easy lunches that don’t require real “cooking.”  So, overall I am definitely buying and tossing less food.
Also just as another quick note -- what also tends to get tossed out of my HF boxes is a “spicy ingredient  But in some ways, this works in HF’s favor.  I don’t really like spicy foods.  A small amount of spice is OK but I’d rather just do without it in most things, sorry I’m that white girl.  Most “Spicy” HF meals get spicy by a spice blend, a packet of sriracha / hot sauce, or a jalapeno which they want you to cut up and include.  So whenever I see something that looks good but listed as “spicy”, I can check the ingredient list first and see what makes it spicy, If I think the thing still sounds good without the spicy part, I can order it.  So yeah, I’ll toss spicy ingredients, but that is 100% my choice and it makes things better because it gives me more variety to order those meals and still make it to my own taste.
Oh, and occasionally, the produce is just bad when you get it or not long after.  I haven’t had this problem often, mostly with ginger and garlic.  I do evaluate which meal has the most perishables when I get my box on Mondays and make those first.  Apparently you can call customer service if this happens for a small credit, but I just use pre-diced garlic or powdered ginger when this has happened to me.
So, this would be a 4.5 out of 5 except for... as discussed above... I end up tossing out HF vegetables on occasion I know I hate and won’t eat, and they won’t let me make substitutions.
But also... cooking for myself... when I make a big batch of something that lasts 4 - 6 portions... more often than I’d like to admit, the last portion or two would never get eaten.  Sometimes I’d TELL myself I’d eat them in a week or so and freeze them only to throw it all away months later.
So let’s call this a 4 out of 5.  Overall, significantly less food waste with HF.
Reason Five: Save Time
I thought that doing HF would mean less prep-work and less time in the kitchen, especially with their easy-to-follow recipes and pre-measured ingredients.
So in that way, yes, time is saved, and it so again takes that mental load off in a lot of ways of not having to make all those pesky decisions.  The materials you’re working with and what you need to do are all Right There for you.  It’s really, nice.
As a side note, like I said I’m a good cook, and I haven’t had any problems following along anything I’ve made, but there were a few things I think are more of a moderate skill level and could be a little challenging for newcomers.  But then, I see people on the HF subreddit all the time saying they learned to cook with no skill and they find the recipes easy so... we’re good there.
However, Saving Time loses points for two big reasons:
First, I’m only making two portions of each meal.  Which, ok... this is my decision.  I could order four portions per meal.  But then... hey that’s taking big points away on the “variety” front.
The Vegetable Chopping / prep work on a lot of the recipes often takes 10 - 20 minutes, depending on the number of fruits and veggies.  So yay for meeting Goal #3 (more veggies) even if it is balanced out by Goal #5.
And unfortunately, most meals end up taking up more dishes than I’d like to clean up (usually at least a pan and baking sheet, sometimes also a pot.  Plus knife, cutting board, tongs, stirring spoon, maybe a zester, etc.)  So no time is saved on cleanup, either.
Mostly where time is saved is having to pick out recipes and making sure you have/buy all the ingredients.  Not much is saved in the actual cooking.
I do, however, enjoy the time I spent cooking and the knowledge that I’m gonna make something good, so we’ll give it a bit back, there.
As a time saver, I’d give HF a 2.5 out of 5 stars.
Reason Six: Save Money
Y’all, Hello Fresh is expensive.  Honestly the #1 reason I re-evaluate whether I want to keep going with it every few weeks is the cost.  Even though I can afford it.
For basically six meals a week, I’m paying $63 for the food, plus $9 for the shipping.
Which means I’m paying $12 a meal.  For food I make myself.
Not cheap.  A luxury.
Where I don’t feel quite so bad about it is the fact that... for the most part, I am wasting a lot less food.  Except, as mentioned, when I can’t swap out vegetables I hate for something I’d actually eat.
So that makes it irk me even more when I am throwing out vegetables I really hate, because they’re expensive vegetables.
Also that price tag is motivation to make and eat every meal.
Overall, my grocery bills have gone down... honestly pretty significantly.  Because I’m not overbuying food!  Now, they haven’t gone down enough to even out the cost for Hello Fresh... I’m still probably spending about 50% more overall for each dinner now than I was before.
This isn’t a cost savings.  It’s an expense, but one I can afford.  And part of writing out this post is to remind myself to decide when the experience is no longer worth the expense.
1 out of 5 stars.
Reason Seven: Eat Better
I would like to challenge myself to define “Better” because that’s all I wrote down when I made the list.
Healthier?  Eeeehhhhhh.... maybe?  But not much.
Hello Fresh does offer lighter choices, and sometimes I pick those because they look good and are filled with things I will eat!
But I’m just as likely to pick the most calor-ific things on the menu.
HF also adds a lot of Sour Cream to their recipes, and encourage you to salt and butter your food liberally.  I try to cut down on some of this where I think it’s too much.  But sometimes there’s not much to cut out and still have the meal you ordered.
But also I’m not eating any worse calorie-wise than I was before, probably.  And overall I’m eating a lot more “real food” instead of “packaged food” and fast food than I was.... especially pre-pandemic.  And again, I AM eating a lot more vegetables, so.... that’s... better?
If I define better as Tastier, yeah, I’m doing pretty good in that regard, haha.
So Better as in healthier: 2.5 of 5 stars.
Better as in tastier: 4 out of 5 stars.
Overall Scoring & Tips
Okay, overall that comes out to a 3.18 out of 5, which I’d round up to a 3.5... which is a pretty good score for how I feel about HF overall.  My current plan is to keep doing it until I go back to working in the office again, and re-evaluate.  For now, it works for me.
IF YOU WANT TO TRY IT, this is my referral link, you’ll get $70 off over a month’s worth of meals (so like, $20 or something off 3 boxes and $10 off the last one, something like that.
I also have four “Free box” codes to give out, PM me if you want one of those.  I don’t think those are compatible with the $70 off link, but it might be a box of completely free food for you?  I don’t know how it works, but this may be the better deal?  PM me.
If you decide to go for it, here’s a few tips:
Every week or two, go in and choose your meals, don’t let HF choose for you unless you really don’t care.
Read the ingredient list and make sure there’s not too much stuff you don’t like coming in a meal.
The extras are pretty expensive and not really worth it.
Plan on each meal taking about 45 minutes to cook from start to finish including chopping vegetables.  Another 10 - 20 with cleanup depending if you have to handwash dishes or not.
Look for ways to make the meal healthier, especially if it encourages you to add more butter and salt near the end.  You probably do NOT need to do so.
Buy a decent pepper.  I love McCormick’s Peppercorn Medley pepper grinder.  Also sea salt grinder is my personal salt preference.
Add some of your own seasonings.  I buy a jar of pre-diced garlic (yes yes I know the criticisms of the stuff but it’s easy) and throw in a half tablespoon or so of that into a lot of recipes.  Also there are a lot of potatoes that they want you to just cook with olive oil, salt and pepper.  Throw some garlic or onion salt on them, or some Lawry’s Seasoning Salt or steak salt of your choice for some variety.
Your basic 2 quart pot, 8 - 12″ frying pan and cookie sheet, plus a cutting board, decent veggie knife, and typical kitchen utensil set are all you need.  However, a decent meat thermometer and a zester that collects the zest as you go are both highly recommended.
A sieve and very small rice cooker have also been a lifesaver for making good rice that doesn’t get overcooked.

Note
Oh no no, I meant when you were commenting on that back thing a while ago where you mentioned that you weren't working out much but it was probably something you were eating, that's why I was confused because I never heard of it before.
Oooh gotcha! So, I’ll be honest, I’ve suffered from anorexia for about 5 years—recovery has been on and off, so I still do struggle with it—it messed up a lot of my digestive system and gave me a really sensitive stomach. Eating anything that has a bit high sugar or oil, among other certain types of foods, will make me physically ill now, which means I have to avoid those things or I’ll get sick, which incidentally ends up keeping me the size I am. I also have to only eat portion sizes that are meant for me (which to other people can look like very little food). So I’m actually stuck eating foods like nuts/berries, veggies, fruits, chicken, fish, etc not all because I want to, but now because I have to cos the anorexia wreaked so much havoc on my body when I was at my lowest point. And not only that, but my metabolism on T kicked into Maxium Overdrive (which is why you get hot on T) so that also makes me stay the way I am.
Cos it is delicate subject and I don’t want to push my own food choices on other people (as everyone is different), I’ll say that for me the foods that helped me feel more energized and in good spirits were meals that had a lot of colour to them, were bright and natural, or where unprocessed, non gmo, without a lot of additives, or were organic. And even when I bake cakes and such, I avoid ingredients that are artificial or ones that may have chemical additives.
I love natural peanut butter and nuts in general which for me is good protein since I can’t always handle red meat or pork, but fish and chicken I love, salmon is my fave! I like KIND granola bars, I fucking love orange juice, mango yogurt popsicles, bananas, rice with veggies, I eat honey every day which is good for immune health, and I really do genuinely enjoy salads and greens in general, or adding micro greens and veggies on top of burgers if we make them, and I make a really good copycat Panera autumn soup! I also love just...peeling a carrot and eating it whole. And of course I bake, my sister and I did that cake and chocolate chip cookies recently :P
My best advice, if you’re looking for some different food choices while on T: stay away from the diets you see online, they will make you sick, and that’s not fun while on T. Be very careful with the “”healthy food”” or even workout advice people—even other trans people—are giving out cos it’s not made for everyone. I’ve come across A TON of bogus health foods claims, biased exercise tips, “avoid this-avoid that” advice within the community. Honestly, just do what you think it best for you!

Same Difference Ch.16
Tumblr media
Her back ached as she hunched over her keyboard, only moving to grab the odd paper and examine it. Straightening up for the first time in hours she glanced at the clock on the wall that read 10:45pm, realizing she'd neglected two out of three meals today. Once Overhaul had left, she decided to catch up on paperwork and hadn't gotten up since, except to go to the bathroom and grab a glass of water. On her visit to the fridge, she was unsurprised to find nothing but water and condiments. Of all the ways to be a normal bachelor, he chooses this one… she bemoaned, trying to formulate a dinner strategy while on house arrest. After a beat, she made a couple calls, confident she'd found a loophole.
An hour or so later, the smell of lemon and herbs filled the kitchen as she checked between dishes. After going through her mental list of recipes, she decided chicken picatta with a side of rice would be easiest while also sating her growing hunger. Smelling the sauce, she grabbed a spoon to gauge if the seasoning was up to snuff. Closing her eyes, she considered the flavor.
"What are you doing?"
"Aggh!" She clutched her chest, almost choking on the sauce. Catching her breath, she shot him a ghastly look before continuing, "I know this is your house and all, but could you please not use the ~hitman stealth~ walk while I'm here?"
"No. You should just be more alert. Now answer my question: what are you doing?"
"Ah, well I know by your sad fridge you may not be familiar with the concept, but this is called 'cooking'." She piped in her best kindergarten teacher voice.
"Do not start with me tonight." He looked genuinely angry as he took a step forward, "Where did you get the ingredients? I specifically asked you not to leave and yo—"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Chill out, Joe Goldberg, I stayed in the box. "
"What?"
"Ugh, if you watched TV like a normal person that would have been a great joke—anyway, what I'm saying is I didn't leave."
"Elaborate."
"Well it's this show about a guy who traps a gi—"
"Dammit I mean about how you got the ingredients without leaving."
"Oh yes, well I texted Kurono to call one of the guys who then called another dude who ordered it on Mostpates who then went back through the chain of communication until it was delivered to the door by one of your subordinates—with whom I had zero contact with—and now here I am. Still very much isolated from the outside world. Happy?"
He paused, his eyes narrowed in suspicion as he towered over her. She deadpanned back until he relented, rolling his eyes and sighing; irritated with her consistent sass, but relieved Nanami was safe. Relieved a valuable ally was uncompromised, he sternly corrected as though to convince himself. Try as he may, the frequency of his little "unprofessional slips" when it came to her kept increasing. He reasoned that introducing her to Pop—the Boss, was simply strategic and necessary as she became more involved in their organization. These faux pas where he'd praise her behind her back to the Boss during their weekly dinners or lapse into these fantasies, he wouldn't dare speak aloud were merely obstacles he'd need to overcome. At some point. She's just an ally. He lied to himself yet again, before addressing her, "Don't do that without informing me first next time."
"Yes s— I mean, you bet." She said nervously clearing her throat before turning back to the stove. She would've continued indulging in her favorite pastime of getting on his nerves, but decided not to after getting a good look at him in the light. He looked tired and her sympathy won out over her need to continue poking the bear. Deciding it would be more sensible to make nice with her new roommate, she took a chance. "You know, I made a lot more than I was expecting if you wan—"
"I don't need anything from you," he reflexively shot back.
"Fine. Suit yourself." she shrugged turning back to the stove. One step forward, fifteen steps back. What do I even expect?
*grooowwwlll*
Her head slowly swiveled to him; her brows raised. She took the sauce off the heat, drizzling the aromatic cream over the steaming rice and herb-crusted chicken. She confidently maintained eye contact for dramatic effect, though she was quite surprised she didn't spill anything. A staring contest ensued, though they both knew the winner was the one who already possessed the literal chicken dinner. "Care to rethink your answer?"
"… If I get food poisoning it'll be your end." He acquiesced.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's just hurry before it gets cold."
They sat down at the table across from each other, setting their places. Forgetting to get utensils, Nanami got back up and headed to the kitchen to retrieve them. "You can start without me, I forgot something," she said with her back turned as she found the drawer she was looking for. Looking at the pans, she decided it would be much less of a pain to put them in the sink now instead of after her self-induced food coma. As she reached for the pan, she heard a faint rustling and a hushed "Thanks for the food" coming from the table. She went wide-eyed for a split second at the realization, Well, guess you can't eat through a mask… gulping at the thought of finally seeing his face, she shooed the feelings away as mere curiosity, to no avail. Suddenly it felt too nerve-wracking to turn around as she continued to overthink, her utensils having been found long ago.
"If you leave your plate out any longer, I'm going to throw it away."
"What? That makes zero sen—" she turned to reflexively bicker but stopped short. After seeing someone masked for so long it felt strangely intimate to see his face. He was still facing forward, calmly devouring the meal as she studied his profile, his features catching the warm light above the dining table. Nanami hadn't known what she'd expected to see, but it wasn't this. It might have been less surprising if he had some maniacal countenance or monstrous face, but he just looked… Normal… Normal…and really fucking cute. Shit. Her conflicted look of disgust with herself and fascination with him was promptly misinterpreted as he turned to see why she'd stopped grimaced back at her as she continued her appraisal, finding his full expressions, instead of just eyes, to still be a jarring sight.
"Do you have something to say?"
"N-No, just getting some eating sticks! I mean utensils. Eating. Utensils." She cleared her throat, exuding awkwardness.
"…Right."
Exhaling, she hurriedly made her way back to the table, trying to carry on normally. She began eating, her hunger taking her mind off the previous blunder. Looking up to grab the pitcher of water to refill her glass, she inadvertently caught his gaze. Certain this would be a rare occurrence, she decided if she wanted to gawk, it would have to be now. Today she'd gotten a face and a name, and suddenly he seemed a lot more… human.
"You have a staring problem, and I'm going to fix it in a very unpleasant way if you don't stop."
Nevermind. "Says the guy that's blinked all of 3 times in the past 4 months." She scoffed," I don't have a 'staring problem,' I was just… surprised to see your face is all."
He paused before continuing eating, but she could tell he was still thinking, "… what's surprising about it?"
Now able to fully evaluate his expressions, Nanami could tell he was a mixture of indignant, but curious. I can work with that. "Hm? Oh nothing, nothing at all… Except…" she leaned forward across the table, her eyes heavy-lidded as they travelled from his eyes to his mouth, committing the pleasant features to memory.
He was focused now. "Except?" the word came out softer than intended, as she was close enough for him to catch the scent of lavender, the t-shirt she wore forming an almost dangerously revealing dip as she leaned forward. His jaw clenched as he fought to maintain eye contact, trying not to blatantly appreciate her suggestive positioning. The walls of the room felt as though they were shifting closer together as he waited with bated breath for her answer, or action.
"Except…You have rice on it," she tapped on her own face to show him where, grinning at his look of exasperation as she plopped back down to finish her last bite of food, missing how he briefly deflated. "So, how was it?"
"I don't feel any early signs of food poisoning," he began "but we'll see how the rest of the night goes."
Now feeling the sleepiness beginning to take over, she was too tired to give a quality retort. Sighing, she got up, grabbing her dish as she made her way back to the kitchen to clean up, the day finally catching up to her. She placed her dish in the sink and began searching for the gloves to start washing. Before she could locate them, she heard footsteps behind her.
"Move."
"Really? I share my food and then you insult it—surprise, surprise—and now I can't even clean up in peace" She began, but stopped as she turned to see him, his hands already clad in the yellow latex. His face was expressionless as he moved in her place and began tidying up. Taking it as her cue to leave, she dragged herself to her room to get ready for bed before he called back to her.
"Thank you for the food. It wasn't bad at all." He said, his back still turned as he continued cleaning.
She stopped, a half-smile appearing on her face as she could see he was trying to make nice, though he was obviously still not used to it, "…You're welcome. Hey, Overhaul?"
"Yes?"
"You should get some rest."
"Don't need it. Per our conversation earlier, I have unlimited stamina."
"Sure, but you can't overhaul your mind, now can you?"
"Ok, Dr. Phil." He mocked and her eyes shot wide. Before she could respond he continued, "And no, I will not answer further questions about that reference or how I know it. Goodnight."
Stifling a laugh, she turned to walk back to her room, "Goodnight."
The next week went by without incident and they began to form a routine. At 5:30 they'd get up to get ready for their jog. Nanami could tell she was on schedule by the sound of footsteps and water running next door that mirrored her own. Once finished, they'd convene in the front room, put on their shoes and head outside to stretch. Very few words if any were spoken, but Nanami enjoyed the comfortable silence. At work it was always expected that she'd be overtly personable and chatty, but she knew he had no such expectations. She could zone out and just exist and that was alrigh—
"Ahem", he cleared his throat as he waited expectantly for her to start their morning run. His hands bare for the first time in ages as one of his subordinates ordered the wrong brand, and he swore he'd break into hives if he used them. Both of them were sure they wouldn't need to touch any public surfaces on their run so the rarity of the occasion was dismissed.
"Oops, coming."
Without another word they began, Nanami putting her headphones in. After their third run, he was satisfied that he could handle an ambush as they gathered more intel about the Okamura, and she could indulge in her music while they ran. One of her favorite songs came on and she began stepping to the rhythm as her shoulders started to roll and her head bobbed to the beat, soon after she began mouthing the words.
"Every time I comb my hair
Thoughts of you get in my eyes
You're a sinner, I don't care
I just want your creamy thighs"
All the while she didn't realize her erratic movements and lip-syncing had caught Overhaul's attention as he watched from the corner of his eye. A few months ago, he wouldn't have been able to stomach the thought of sharing his home and free time with someone else without breaking out in hives, but now it felt… comfortable. It was comforting to come home to someone, to work with them and not be annoyed to the point of homicide (for him it was more rare than most), it was comforting knowing that someone was her.
She looked so carefree, so happy in the midst of everything while he felt the weight of the world had made permanent indentions on his shoulders. She didn't fit in this world; she didn't belong here. Or to anyone. The thought crossing his mind bitterly as his inner monologue took a familiar, pessimistic turn. Just looking at her brought that sickening warmth to his chest he coveted but didn't recognize as something he was capable of… that is until a couple of months ago. Now he found it showing up more and more, clouding his judgment. It was distracting. He had an objective and she was an important variable in achieving said objective—nothing more. How dare she make him... feel or even question if he was able to. It was disgusting.
Now able to recognize the feeling of being silently judged by him, Nanami looked up to meet his gaze. "Weren't you just lecturing me the other day about having a 'staring problem'?"
"I'm not staring, I'm just wondering why you're carrying on like this in public."
"Pssh, enjoying music—the great music of the illustrious Prince, nonetheless—is totally grounds for 'carrying on in public.' Being carefree every now and again isn't a sin, you know."
"There are enough frivolous people in the world. Why should I have to indulge them?"
"You call it frivolous; I call it taking happy moments when they come. You should just let people enjoy things and stop being such a stick in the mud. You never know, maybe you'll do something ~*wild*~ like enjoy yourself for once."
"Not all of us have the luxury of being empty-headed and self-indulgent."
At this she stopped running, the words sounding more like a personal attack than broad commentary. "What, so I'm a careless idiot just because I don't brood about my self-induced problems all the time?"
Their similarities began to surface as he took her comment in like fashion, both of them now offended at scenarios they'd created in their own heads. "'Self-induced'? You know nothing about my perceived 'problems' or how they came about. Nothing." His irritation quickly morphed into anger the more he thought about the implication that he'd chosen this life.
"And you don't know anything about my problems either. Just because I choose to be happy every blue moon and my issues usually don't involve me snuffing people out on the regular doesn't mean they aren't also really shitty."
"Oh, so you accidently blow up one kid and now it's a trauma you get to use as a crutch?"
Upon saying this, her posture straightened, and she looked at him evenly, a cold rage emanating from her. "So, you think that's all there is to me? I'm just some spoiled brat who's always had her way and now that I'm exposed to your big, scary reality, my little traumas don't compare? My tender little world is being shattered by the brutality and violence of your 'real' one? If anything is self-indulgent it's your narcissistic assumption that you're sob story is somehow worse than everyone else's" she said, venom dripping from her words.
He hadn't seen her like this before. They say when telling a person's age, that wrinkles and proportions are the best tells. In truth, there's a certain "look" that begins to form over time, one's experiences flash behind their eyes, an amalgamation of memories; they've seen things, their innocence eroding with every visage adding years to even the most verdant skin. As Nanami spoke, he saw an age in her eyes that didn't match her face. There was a certainty in her gaze that only came from seeing the grotesque with one's own eyes and deciding to keep looking. Her words were telling, but her stare was what filled the pages of the novel being written between them. Ever obsessed with purity, he assumed he'd be repulsed by the revelation, but it only made her seem closer. Her presumed naivety that he thought separated them was being chipped away. He wanted to know more, to become closer.
He was entranced as she seemingly riled herself up, "I've been through more than you could ev—" She stopped short, shaking her head as she bit her lip, looking off into the distance at something only she could see.
"What do you mean?" He coaxed her to finish her thought, now hopeful.
"No. I think I've told you enough. You've made your judgment and I'll have to live with the fact that I made a mistake, as will you."
"What? This conversation isn't ov—"
"You don't get to decide that," she snapped. "I'm heading back, and I suggest you take the long way around."
A grave look came across his face at being commanded, "That's not how this works, and you will not cut me off again, or I'll-"
"Or you'll what?" She was back in his face, a familiar defiance in her eyes. If she was poking the bear before, this was an entire stabbing.
"You don't want this." He warned.
"You have no idea what I want."
As things boiled over, they were much too close, a static in the air building between them, fingers pointed as they continued to argue. They were ultimately too close, for no more than a millisecond, but that small error was all it took for the reaction that followed. In that brief moment, they made contact, a blast followed that sent them both flying in opposite directions. Nanami hit one of the walls that lined the streets with a sickening thud. She slumped, unconscious, a stream of red dying her silver hair.
