New Pinned/Intro Post!

Hi, I'm Loo(or Alex), I'm a disabled queer artist and writer as well as a furry vtuber who streams four days a week on twitch(mostly Minecraft but also Soulsborne games and a variety of other stuff).

You may know me from The Tuna Post, in which several thousand of you came together to "force" me to buy damn near 30 American Dollars worth of imported fancy canned tuna to eat and review live on stream. If you're here for it, said live review can be found on twitch and on my youtube channel. TL;DR: 10/10 would recommend.

This is alittle angsty with maybe a sweet ending or something, what if Keigo's s/o, who also has a wing based quirk, was his partner in hero work but one day they are against a really bad and powerful villain. The villain sends an attack towards Keigo when his S/o pushes him out of the way and take it themselves.

"Hawks and (H/n) is time to back up before is too late! Endeavour and Miruko are coming over your way to help" You hear the buzzing voice of your superior on your ear as gritting your teeth and doing your best to dodge all the things this villain had been doing.

"Hawks!" You called from afar, flying from a safe distance as the blonde tried to cut the more tentacles of this guy you two had been fighting for over an hour or more "They said is for us to back up!"

"You're kidding right? We cant just leave this octoguy here dove!" His voice was concerned yet on his handsome face showed that beautiful smirk of his.

"For real?" You laughed while flying and dodging the many tentacles that dried to throw things and both capture you "Even on work you bring the pet names?" You pushed your weapon and tried to attack the Guy's face only for him to laugh and dodge your attack as well.

"What can I say?" He shrugged with a smug face and still two of his sharp feathers on his both hands "You are my dovey so. I'm just speaking the true here."

You shocked your head in unamusement, still smiling though, at your boyfriend before your eyes widened in allert at sieng one of the tentacles coming from behind Takami, read to capture or hit him... badly.

"KEIGO!" You shouted in desperation, forgetting completely about his hero name as you flew towards him the fastest as you could and pulled him out of the way harshly before shouting in pain when the member hitted you and send you to crash on a glass building.

You groaned at how your back and muscles stinged and how your wings twitched in pain and discomfort before lazily opening your eyes only too a white room, light green curtains and a pastel blue blanket covering your body.

You went to get up but was stopped by both your grunts of pain and a gloved hand of a nurse.

"I wouldn't recommend you to move for now (H/n). Your wings were broken due to the attack you received and the trauma on your head." You widened your eyes just at hearing that your wings were broken...

For a winged person to have your wings injured is the complete hell on earth... you couldn't imaginne the pain and suffering of someone like you even having the possible chance of losing completely his wings...

"You have a visit." The nurse smile at you while checking your papers "He came here every day you had been passed out."

"W-What? H-How long have I been-?"

"Two weeks in total." You almost felt the cold of the floor due to your jaw opening.

The door opened slowly and you already smiled in glee at seing those scarlet wings already making their appearance... Although, the owner of them had been completely devasted, he had bags under his amber eyes as he brought a bouquet of flowers before dropping them at seing you awake.

"Keigo..!" You lifted your arms up the best you could as he engulfed you in his warm embrace with a shaky sigh as his hand grabbed your hand while the other circled around your waist with care yet quickly.

"(Y/n)... Crying out loud, you scared kid.." He chuckled sadly before burying his face in your hair as you breathed in his scent.

Suddenly you gasped and pushed him away but still holding onto his jacket with fearful eyes.

"What happened?! The villain was arrested?! Were civilians injured-" his lips made you shut up as you sighed in bliss while holding onto his messy yet beautiful looks of hair before he parted only go leave a peck again and smile at you.

"Is okay. Everything went almost fine... The only worst that happened was... you know." He sighed the worss while hugging you again, looking over his shoulder you snorted at the flowers he brought sprawled on the floor.

"Birbrain... the flowers." You giggled at his curse of realization before he got up to get them... the tv in your room was on and coincidentally was passing a record of the battle of two weeks ago.

And you had to admit... Keigo looked scary... Eyes narrowed at villain as he cutted all his members with his wings only to fight hand on hand with the main villain while his remains feathers ruffled up in anger and shouted with his final punch only to go back to your limp body.

Hawks noticed you watching the news and furrowed his eyebrows while taking a seat with a sigh and changing the channel.

"... are you okay?" You asked in worry, noticing how tensed he seemed before he let out a breathless chuckled. Lifting one of his huge wings to drop over you and pull your body towards his chest.

"I just..." he sighed while placing an unconscious kiss on your temple "I lose it when I saw that guy hurting you... I was suppose to be the fattest hero.. yet I couldn't save my own love... Actually, what the ll, it was the opposite." He chuckled sarcastically the last words before you nuzzled in the crook of his neck.

"We are suppose to protect each other, right?" You mumbled on his neck as he shivered a bit "You will always be my number one hero. Doesn't matter if you come to my rescue or the other way around... After all-" you smiled up at him "We're a team, remember?"

His eyes were ones of shock before they softened as a sincere smile grew on his lips as he kissed you once again... pushing all his secret agent job to the back of his mind only to care about the only person that sees him as Takami Keigo.

Twitch Streamer AU???

(I planned on pushing out a FEW AU asks, but then realized I don’t even have so many. There’s going to be a FNAC event, but that will be an event, not a specific AU ask, so- I guess this is it! Very cursed AU, thank you very much Anon Small warning for mentions of blood, I think? Nothing too bad.)

Streamers, youtubers, content creators. Some people are all of these, some people are none, and some are just one- because each of them needed a very different talent. Those who could do seemingly everything were few and far between- And they ruled the entertainment scene! Thankfully though, the main three as most called them, were also always out for new content to watch. Thus they boosted those that they saw potential in. With some taking the boost and then going off to do their own thing- And some becoming good friends. It always started with a letter. Mike had the habit to do things on stream, as long as no personal details were not visible on them. He used a false email which he regularly changed, and he generally kept himself as safe as possible. Opening emails on stream could be rather fun, even if it was a risk. Sometimes it encouraged people to send bad things- So to prevent the worst, nothing would be downloaded and all emails containing images would be put into the spam bin. Better safe than sorry, the internet was full of terrible people. This day so far had been successful. And by successful it meant that Mike was SCREAMING. “I HATE SUPER MEAT BOY. I WILL COMMIT VIOLENCE AGAINST MEAT IN A MINUTE. I HAVE A BIG F-CKING STEAK IN THE KITCHEN, AND I WILL THROW IT AGAINST THE F_CKING WALL. I WILL GET A HAMMER.” The chat was going wild, cheering. The chat’s phrase of today was “tender Mikey” and it didn’t help at all. “I DID. NOT. HIT THAT! I DID NOT!” A donation popped up, with a robotic voice. ‘Oh hai Mark!’ “NOT FUNNY! NOT F-CKING FUNNY. I’M SUFFERING HERE AND ALL OF YOU SUPPORT IT. YOU’RE ALL F-CKING MONSTERS HERE, I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT. AND I’M NOT F-CKING TENDERIZING THE MEAT WHEN I SLAP IT AROUND, I’LL RIP IT INTO PIECES AND CONSUME IT RAW!” Standing up, he genuinely went to get it- And fifteen minute later he had slightly calmed down, his hands and room slightly bloody. The chat was still celebrating and donating- another thing that never failed to make Mike BEG them to stop and use the money for something GOOD and SENSIBLE, LIKE THEM-FUCKING-SELF- but he had gotten out most of the energy. “Alright. Alright everyone. ENOUGH. I gotta stop you HERE. It’s email time.”   A celebratory jingle played, as Mike booted up the website, opening the inbox. Memes, storytime, I’m-not-fucking-reading-that-and-you-know-it, and- One of the emails caught his- and the chat’s- attention, however. Sender: Fazbear Entertainment Topic: Challenge Needless to say- once again the chat was out of control and this time there was NOTHING Mike could do to stop them. After opening the email, Mike slowly took a deep breath and looked into the camera, between concerned and honored- But that wouldn’t be enough to rip him from his carefully maintained persona. So he audible scoffed- albeit him being unable to hide an excited grin. “Alright bitches and bastards in the audience- we’re firing SuperMeatBoy up again. You won’t be catching ME losing to a pink son of a bitch anytime soon!” After the letter- provided it was accepted and responded to, the production happened. The deal was that a teaser was dropped on the big channel- The entire video itself was put on the smaller one, attracting the viewers over and hopefully make them more likely to want to see the other works the creator had put out. It was a win-win overall, the big channel being able to vary their content, testing the water for new things- and the smaller channel getting a boost and a lot of tips from very experienced creators. Henry and Dave were very generous people. Jeremy was sitting there, taking deep breaths, trying to stay calm. So far, everyone seemed to be rather kind, even if Jeremy was basically a complete nobody. Hell, he never wanted to be anybody. He just wanted to stream himself baking, for those who never had someone baking with them. Because baking could feel stressful, especially when you were missing ingredients or- many reasons, actually. Not only baking, but cooking too- Sometimes playing games on request, but not much in terms of requests ever came in. And now he was here in an actual studio, soon to be seen by an insane amount of people. A cooking competition. Sounded silly- you couldn’t really FIGHT in something like that… But… Henry and Dave had promised it would be fun. And they were nice. With and without the cameras rolling. Speaking off- There they were, approaching, their assistant coming along. He wore a weird phone-head, to ensure his privacy. Or something. It was kinda weird, but he had just accepted the answer he got. “Why, there you are, Jeremy! Would you like to see the equipment we have prepared?” Henry warmly asked, reaching down with his hand to help his guest stand up. “We have gotten a few extra things, just in case.” As they entered the studio, Jeremy’s invisible eyes went WIDE. “Woah- that looks really nice! I love it here! This is high quality stuff-!” “Fantastic!” Pleased Henry opened his arms in his typical theatrical manner- Before being abruptly interrupted by Dave jumping in, halfway over Henry’s shoulder. “ARE YA READY TO GO!? CAMERAS ARE READY!” “Ah- I- I guess- but-“ “YOU HEARD HIM, BOYS! GET IT ROLLIN’!” “W-wait, I don’t even have-“ “Everyone! Welcome to NOTHIN’ AT ALL!” Henry swiftly fitted in, continuing on with the intro. “Todays challenger is the man, the legend, the baker and occasional chef- Jeremy from Baking With Jeremy!” “Wait, what- that’s seriously your channel name, pal?” A bit offended Jeremy looked into the eyes of the people behind the camera. “U-uh- you guys here- I mean- he has literally called his channel Henry Miller! I- uhm- I-“ Snickering Henry put a hand on his guest’s shoulder. “You are very right about that. Say, are you nervous about losing?” “… n-no. I mean- maybe a little. This place here is big and very professional and I’m not used to many people looking at me…” Taking a deep breath, he gave off a nervous smile for the audience. “… yet, I know- it’s a good thing! And as long as everyone has fun, everything will work out!” “Awwwww, look at him!” Dave said, pleased. “You’re so right! We’ll be havin’ fun!” “But also, I will win.” Henry pointed out. “That is when I have the most fun.” Slightly playful Jeremy smiled. “K-keep that attitude, that will make it even easier to blindside you!” Simon whistled, clearly bemused as he held the camera in place- And Henry smirked. “Sure. Some joined, with amazing results- Mike rubbed his face. “Who thought that was a great idea. I fucking hate this.” Dave next to him on the couch just grinned. “It’s amazin’ what these websites all offer to sell. You won’t be BELIEVIN’ what’s in this box!” “I’M NOT OPENING IT.” “YOU WILL. They asked first, of course. Each of them fulfilled their own niche, each of them had caught Henry’s and Dave’s attention in one way or another. Henry and Dave however- Well, Dave was the varied creator. Henry liked his niche. He played horror, investigated ARGs, read stories about real and fictional crimes against humanity. The world was a terrible place, wasn’t it? Yet he reveled in it. Aside from that he showed extra effects, he built machines and thought everyone one or another thing about creating special effects at home. From dry ice to genuinely ridiculous chain-reactions, Henry showed them it all. Blood too, multiple forms of it, depending on how and where it would be used. Sometimes breaking it off with more light-hearted one-off games and listening to what his community wanted to see… but the most comfortable he was with horror and analysis. He was a youtuber, a streamer, a content creator… … and one thing more. It wasn’t easy to find the code. But his intended audience were a very small amount of people. A small number of strangers. There was no way to know if anyone ever made it to more than one show, but Henry did not care. It wasn’t for them that he did this. Him and William moved down, down below the set, into the lowest regions of the house. The workshop. Nobody really question why you added what to your home if you were a creative person. Even less so if you were a famous, eccentric creator. Yes, the free reign was what he REALLY loved about his job. Maybe he should build his studio somewhere else- But like this it was so much more thrilling! Wordlessly both of them put on their suits. It would hide their identity perfectly- especially the animal heads that contorted their voices a bit. Enough. Today’s participant wore a mask too- another phone head, differently made, different style, but to hide their identity too. However, the voice was in no way muffled. Panicked the person dragged on the chains keeping them attached to the chair. “H-HELLO!? HELLO!? S-SOMEONE- IS SOMEONE HERE!?” A noisy one! Delightful! Both Fredbear and Springbonnie stepped out of the shadows, one form each side. While Springbonnie put his hands gently on the shoulders of the whimpering person, Fredbear stepped in front of the camera, bowing. “Ladies and gentlemen-“ The low voice sounded more like the one of an animal than from a person. Yet it was smooth and comforting. “- I welcome you to yet another installment of our show. I am Fredbear, and over there is my wonderful assistant, Springbonnie. Today we have brought a simple stranger, a nobody who might not even be missed. Thusly I encourage you to truly be creative with your ideas. And while your votes roll in, maybe I point out that next time we will have another little game-show, with quite the effects. We might even get a real bull! You will not want to miss it.” The board above the camera blinked up, as a bitter fight of votes started, everyone wanting to see something else. Three tiers to vote on! Foreplay (light injuries), main course (heavy injury leading to death) and of course what to do with the body. Below it was a little measure for “face reveal”. Some of their viewers really enjoyed seeing the expressions during and after. It came with a risk to Fredbear and Springbonnie, as the victim being recognizable meant their general area of activity was more obvious- thus it was incredibly expensive. They knew there was every now and again law enforcement mixed up between the genuine watchers. It was thrilling too- Yet Fredbear wanted to keep this game alive as long as he could. Thus it was important to hide what they could. Fredbear was a creator first and foremost, an entertainer second- And there was nothing that attracted an HONEST, an UNRESTRAINED, a PURE audience quite like violence. Once blood spilled, humans degraded and it was wonderful. Behind him, the victim began rattling even more erratic. “WHAT- WHAT IS THIS?! LET ME OUT- PLEASE- LET ME OUT- PLEASE- I- DIDN’T DO ANYTHING-“ Burying his hands into the shoulders of Springbonnie downright cackled, enjoying the mania that always accumulated in these situation. “Be still, new friend! The audience HATES too much whining, y’know? And at least you could die with your tongue still intact, wouldn’t that be nicer than having to swallow the thing? Once it almost killed someone, boy, that sure was a bother!” His voice was changed to a cartoonish, upbeat pitch- “While the votes come in, how about we quiz today’s friend… maybe if you are smart enough, they will want you to live! It happened before… o n c e.” Fredbear took out a long scalpel, the face a morbid grimace. “Surprise us!”

For as long as he can remember, flowers have bloomed around him. He'll be fine, it'll be the most ordinary moment in the world, and suddenly something will click and there he'll be, petals floating around him as flowers bloom from his skin.

It's funny how he can't handle too much of pollen, and when the flowers are more than he can take, he sneezes and sneezes and his skin itches like anything. Yet, while the flowers bloom outwardly, they make something within him bloom.

Solidarity.

A connection like no other, because he's not the only one for whom the flowers thrive.

Wooyoung found out early on in life how his soulmate identifier works.

After losing a dance competition that he'd poured his all into, and coming back home feeling like the biggest idiot on the planet, he'd held it in long enough to make it to his room before slamming the door shut and slumping down to the floor as he let out everything. Tears wet his cheeks, face hot and eyes burning, and all he felt was the anguish from not being good enough.

He was just not good enough, that was all; all he had to do was be better, practice till he was perfect. But how could he fool himself at that moment? The crippling dejection made it hard to even swallow around the lump in his throat while he cried silently, nails digging into his palms as he tried to stop himself from letting out any sound.

Then the piercing pain from his nails had softened into a foreign feeling, nails free from digging into his skin and his fists felt too full to remain clenched. He'd unclenched them, let his hands fall open as he stared at his palms in wonder. There, instead of blood, lay a single flower on each palm.

On his left, a purple flower that he didn't recognise, petals curling in quite a lovely manner, a contrast from what he was feeling.

On his right was a sprig of heather, a light purple, almost-lavender which stood out against his skin, countless delicate buds brushing across his palm as he held it tenderly. Heather was one of the few flowers he recognised from hearing his mother talk about them.

But why was it, and the nameless flower, doing with him? He'd pondered over it for a moment, before getting up. He couldn't ask his mother when his face was absolutely terrible. All he could do was use some trusty search engine to answer his questions.

'Heather, Lavender: Solitude or loneliness.'

Loneliness? Was he lonely? He wasn't. All he felt was the solitude that came after dashing everyone's hopes to the ground and stomping on them, and coming back home with a loss. So, yes, solitude it was.

The moment he figured that out, he also noticed that his emotions... seemed to be overlapping with something else. Like two parallel lines finally swerving and intersecting, by some miracle or disaster.

It was as if he had dual trains of thought, dual feelings, emotions, dual everything. But instead of it being chaotic and giving him a headache, he just felt like waves across channels had bled over into each other, finally. A dull hum which in no way disrupted his line, merely providing comfort in its constancy like it was always meant to do so.

But the longer he stared at the flowers, the calmer he felt. He was Jung Wooyoung, and Jung Wooyoung didn't get sad for long.

The thrum of another in his veins sang a bit, and as he watched, he sprouted more flowers, blue blooms in his palms as leaves rustled over his wrists. He took a deep breath, before tilting his head and wiping his eyes against his shoulder, before he stood up and walked out of his room, leaving the door open.

"Mom?" he'd asked and she'd turned around, mouth opening in surprise before she shut it as she took in his appearance. Her lips had twitched, before she sighed. "Wooyoung, what do you feel right now?"

"That's what I want to know."

"Do you feel particularly hopeful?" She asked, and he wracked his brain before nodding. Yeah, it was a huge turn from his emotions just minutes ago. "Those are irises, Wooyoung."

He looked at her for further explanation, but when she turned back to her work, he asked again, "Why am I growing flowers?"

"I don't know, maybe you're a farmer?"

He'd whined at her, trying to get it out of her to no avail, and had finally resigned himself to believing that he had a blooming syndrome before she'd told him about soulmates.

Right.

Those existed.

Did that mean his soulmate was also sprouting flowers?

He suddenly remembered the emotions and thoughts that weren't entirely his own, snaking around and intertwining with his, and that's when he'd realised.

When Jung Wooyoung and his soulmate felt the same things, flowers bloomed.

The mystery had been solved. All that remained was knowing which flower meant what.

Fast forward to a few years later, when Wooyoung gets a job in a flower shop only because he wants to know what his soulmate is thinking.

It's a stupid reason, his co-worker and new friend San laughs at him, though he does call it cute because San's as much of a sap for his unknown soulmate as Wooyoung is for his mystery flower person.

Yeosang rolls his eyes at him, and Wooyoung would like to think it's out of the other boy's affection for him, and not because he knows exactly how much Wooyoung has pined over this soulmate that he's never met, and wanted to know what they think.

It's such a hit-or-miss phenomenon, honestly. But it always ends the same way.

Wooyoung will be going about his day, completely alright, and then something happens which sets him on edge, and all of a sudden begonias will bloom from his fingers, leaving him to catch them all, and probably sneeze too.

He'll be feeling like he's on the top of the world, and chrysanthemums will grace him with their presence.

But they always transition into something stupidly romantic, which leaves his face burning and heart beating way too fast. It's not his fault his soulmate likes him as much as he likes them!

Moments after Wooyoung's reeling from a sneezing fit, with his heart blooming like the daffodils that are adorning the counter of the shop, San ends up finding his soulmate. Right before Wooyoung's eyes, though he understands only when they hug and shed tears and link their pinkies and San smiles at him gleefully.

San, the one who secretly wanted to meet his soulmate more than anything. Wooyoung's happy for him, he really is, but when someone's identifier is a string tied around their finger, it's only a matter of time before they find their soulmate.

In contrast, Wooyoung has to play roulette with his emotions to find out what his soulmate's feeling, forget actually ever meeting them. It makes his mood sour for a moment, before he shakes his head. He promised himself he'd try to be as positive as he can, if only to make sure his soulmate is too. He never wants them to sprout flowers of sadness, just so they can both revel in it. He wants his soulmate to only get flowers of happiness. He succeeds around half of the time. His soulmate must be a very happy person.

Maybe they're happy being without Wooyoung…

No. He's not going to spend time thinking of such things. There's absolutely no way someone could not love him, especially when they're his soulmate.

Wooyoung spends the next few days listening to San gush about his soulmate, and the devious part of his heart is amused as all hell when Yeosang effectively calls him a twelve year old. He's called Wooyoung that a million times, but then again, they've not been friends for four years for nothing.

It's another day at the flower shop when Yeosang is hanging around, and Wooyoung's surreptitiously trying to glance at the numbers his friend always hides. The phone rings, and Wooyoung sighs, giving up and choosing to look at the numbers on the device instead as Yeosang raises an eyebrow at him.

It ends up being a request for a delivery, and Wooyoung has exactly a moment of trying to convince San to do it before his soulmate walks into the shop, smiling and waving at all of them. Dammit.

The next moment, Wooyoung's being pushed out of the shop with a bouquet in his hand, and their thanks ringing in his ears. Heck, even Yeosang stays inside.

As he gets on his bicycle and goes out on the road, he huffs. Why couldn't San and his soulmate go out to deliver the flowers? They could've had a nice date. But of course, they'd rather hide between the shelves at the shop and kiss, while Yeosang uncomfortably gags in the background.

Oh well, at least Wooyoung's not the one left to gag while he secretly wishes that he could kiss his soulmate behind shelves too. All in due time. He'll make sure to kiss his soulmate when he meets them, regardless of where they are.

The thought makes him giggle, and he allows the wind to cool him down as he cycles. He reaches his destination soon enough, some big hall with an important ceremony. He's about to leave the bouquet at the reception when someone hurries out of the doors and asks him to take them inside instead.

Your tone is clipped, but you look out of breath and frazzled, and Wooyoung can sympathise. Evidently, this event is taking a lot out of you, so he just nods and follows you when you lead him into the hall. You're almost at the main table, Wooyoung at your heels, when the sound of music floats through the air. It's a piano piece, your favourite.

And who'd have thought it's also the song Wooyoung's mother played to him when he was young, telling him it was the song she'd danced to at her wedding. The melody he grew up listening to.

It happens almost instantly. Camellias, pretty pink buds blooming across his hands. There's so many of them, he's surprised. He didn't expect the longing to be that intense. trying to gather them sheepishly and apologise to you for dragging you down under them.

And then he notices it. Half of the flowers aren't even blooming from him. They're blooming on your skin, your face pale as you stare at him. Pale, and then flooding with colour, like a flower blooming in spring.

His eyes widen, jaw dropping and he almost screams. Almost, because people are gathering around them and you look even more stressed than you did before, despite the flowers going crazy around you.

That just won't do.

The flowers are joined by white carnations, adoration, and then more camellias following them, red this time. The song's still playing, the pianist probably having a field day (in more ways than one) as he gets to witness two soulmates meeting.

Wooyoung sets down the bouquet he's still managed to carry till now, on someone's lap and grins at them when they thank him. Then he's stepping forward and taking your hand gently.

"Do you like this song?" he asks softly, not wanting to scare you. You nod, and he notices how you've calmed down a bit, the line in his mind calming down too, soft instead of the frantic buzzing from moments ago.

"Do you like dancing?" he asks again, and he can't help the creasing of his eyes nor the mirth that shines in them as you duck your head, purple flowers blooming around you both once again as your emotions coincide.

Viscarias.

Plucking off a flower from his hand and tucking it behind your ear, he smiles at you. Placing an arm around your waist, he lets go of your hand, bringing his up to caress your cheek.

"Will you dance with me?" he asks, right before he smashes your lips together, uncaring of the crowd around you. Hidden among the flowers blooming uncontrollably, he feels your smile against his lips.

According to Eddy Izzard, that’s the literal translation of JFK’s famous quote as he entered Berlin during the cold war. I don’t know if Mighty Matt McElroy or Matthew “The Gentleman Gamer” Dawkins issued a similar proclamation as they entered the city for last weekend’s PAX convention, but there they were anyway.

Now, it’s a Paradox Entertainment convention so it was really focused mostly on their electronic games – but Onyx Path was there representing the happy land of Tabletop Role-Playing Games. And from what the dynamic duo reported back, it was a fantastic chance to talk with all sorts of gamers – many of whom were unfamiliar with Onyx Path and/or TTRPGs.

What was really gratifying for our team was just how positive and friendly the attendees were. You never know, going to a new city or country for a con, just how the reception will be. Well, from what they said, it was fantastic! They were able to talk about our upcoming games, both V5 and upcoming White Wolf projects, and also there was a lot of interest in our other, non-WW game lines!

For those folks who did know about us, we had some sneak previews of upcoming V5 projects – some from the V5 Chicago By Night KS, and also the text from V5 Cults of the Blood Gods. So, a lot of excitement there! There was also a lot of interest from the Paradox/White Wolf team for us to run a Kickstarter for V5 Cults of the Blood Gods. Which is always nice to hear from the folks who are licensing you their properties!

In case it sounds like our crew were just there to hang out in our booth and chat, they also had the responsibility of representing Onyx Path in many meetings where the future of V5 and all the WW IPs was discussed. Again, this was an extremely positive experience for our duo, with just tons of ideas and possible projects coming out of those discussions!

Of course, being business meetings, there wasn’t anything I can share with you here, but I can say that the refocusing of White Wolf last year has seemed to have really altered how they are proceeding, and has borne fruit in a lot of new licensed projects folks are going to enjoy.

To switch gears slightly, but not totally as I did mention Kickstarters up above, we finished up the Deviant: The Renegades Kickstarter last week! Again, huge kudos to Eric Zawadzki for his nigh-constant efforts to answer everybody’s questions in the comments as the KS ran. He was indefatigable!

We’re pretty happy with how it turned out, and big thanks to all of your who backed and spread the word about this one! We hoped that running the Creature Collection at the same time wouldn’t collide our audiences too much, and it looks like both KSs ran just fine and without overwhelming potential backers.

We’re going to try to avoid running two KSs of similar size and that might have too large of an overlap of audiences, but we have so many cool projects and settings that folks want to see Kickstarted that they’ve been backing up until now. Now, we’re going to try and use our two KS accounts to give both us and all of you the flexibility to put a project on Kickstarter as we need to and when it makes sense to.

We have, as many folks have pointed our previously, an embarrassment of riches when it comes to our projects, which really starts with the large number of game lines we are always working on.

Of course, that goes all the way back to when Onyx Path first started with the WW licenses. We didn’t just get the licenses to one of the WoD lines or CofD lines, we took on the responsibility of shepherding all the existing lines and on bringing forth new ones if that what was needed.

Plus, we brought over other WW game lines, and one of those (cough, Trinity Continuum, cough) had multiple lines within it as well. We took, and still take, those responsibilities seriously as we know that every line has dedicated, long-term, fans that truly love it.

It is a real juggling act, and we’ve tried to provide every game line, every setting, with a new project and the spotlight at least once, regardless of the number of fans, over these past 7-8 years. And the flip side is that we are actually a business, we need projects that sell more than what it cost to make them – if only so everybody we work with keeps being able to afford to keep on making TTRPGs.

So those projects that sell well get follow-up projects, and those are usually within a single line, and so that line gets more focus. Which is one of reasons I’ve pushed for cross-line projects like the Night Horrors books, the Dark Eras books, or even the Contagion Chronicle, for Chronicles of Darkness (our biggest umbrella line).

Which is why our brochure this year, which is days away from going to press, is set up to talk about each setting, each game line, rather than trying to push for particular projects within the lines. We’ll do that with con-specific flyers at the conventions we’re attending, and news on all our social media sites, but we’re going to have the brochure there as a primer on just which game lines we’re doing right now.

Breakfast with Alex Wex

People have a million opinions and false facts about the digital world we live in today, and even more about social media. For a lot of people, they use platforms like Instagram and Twitter to follow celebrities, and some use it to bully celebrities. Most forget that that connection can also be used for good. We live in a world of amazing accessibility and, when used properly, could foster a wonderful connection between people. A prime example of this is the Will Smith Jump event that took the internet by storm, that all started with a video message. It’s incredible what can happen when you reach out to people. That was the main thought in my mind before sitting down with Alex Wex yesterday. Alex Wex is an amazing Twitch streamer, and until recently, was a producer for FBE and REACT on Youtube. As of this interview, Alex Wex has fostered a wonderful community through Twitch and Discord known as the Jank Squad, and recently broke his view count record at 210 viewers for his birthday stream, also hitting close to 600 subscribers. Given that I was in Atlanta and he was in LA we couldn’t actually meet for breakfast like I usually do so we had an amazing video chat instead.

So for starters, I just want to thank you for sitting down with me. I’ve been following your work since I first saw you on FBE and I think you’re an awesome dude so thanks. I wanna start at the very beginning because I’m really interested in your story. So, I know you went to high school in Atlanta, GA. What can you tell me about that?

I was actually born in Manhattan, my family moved to Atlanta around pre-K and I lived there up until I graduated from Riverwood High School. All my friends wanted to go to UGA or Georgia Tech but I was really interested in traveling and branching out, so I went to Ohio for college, and now I live in L.A. I made some truly amazing friends in Atlanta, and having this kind of east coast, south culture mixture has made life pretty interesting.

When did you know you wanted to work in entertainment, and what led to you becoming a producer?

When I was a kid, my family liked to record family videos, and I always wanted to see the recording. I had the eye for production pretty early. Once I started high school I got involved in performing, did Grease, The Wiz, and a few other school plays that got me interested in the performance aspect as well. In college, I majored in video production with a minor in film and sociology so I gained real knowledge of the art that happens behind the camera.

How does one go from school in Atlanta to working at FBE?

As I mentioned before I went to college at Ohio University, what got me was their video production department. I actually still work with the head of the department and speak to the alumni when they come here, advising them on some dos and don'ts. As a graduation gift, my Dad gave me an all expense paid trip to anywhere I wanted to go in the U.S for a few days and I chose L.A. So I was here, hanging out with my current roommate Johnny and we just decided to come out here permanently and live the dream. So I packed up my car and drove from Atlanta to LA and started looking for internships while working at Chipotle.I first joined FBE as an intern, then got hired as a PA and eventually was a writer for some of their scripted shows, and I worked my way up until I was offered the producer position. I loved producing because that involved every aspect of working behind the camera, from writing to filming to editing and seeing the baby from birth to fully grown. Being in front of the camera came back when FBE launched the community team and started streaming on Twitch.

Watching Alex grow on YouTube, putting reactors in hilarious challenges, eat crazy concoctions and brave some insane hot sauces that would make Sean Evans proud, his personality radiates through the screen. His passion for both sides of the camera is clear in the quality of every video he makes. However, taking part in one of his Twitch streams gives you an even more full experience. It’s like the difference between a teaser trailer and a full film.

Freddy or Jason?

Freddy is my favorite in Dead By Daylight but I love Jason, in fact, Friday the 13th was the first game I ever streamed. I’d have to say, Jason.

So, we were in high school in the baby years of YouTube, I mostly used it for music videos and anime, I think back then I only followed Phil Defranco and Timothy Delaghetto consistently. Back then, did you ever look at YouTube and think “this is going to revolutionize the world and turn traditional media on its head?”

Yeah, it’s changed everything. Almost every network has a YouTube channel now. Late night shows and things like SNL upload segments that get massive amounts of views. YouTube is still growing, testing out its premium service and channel enrollment and things like that, but it’s exciting to see where it’s going to end up.

It’s even crazier when you think about how much Twitch has already changed the game.

Definitely, I mean we’ve seen what happens when some of the top YouTube creators come over to Twitch and realize that it’s completely different from what they’re used to. It’s more like an improv radio show, you have to be on for two or three hours and avoid dead air, rather than being able to edit something together. It’s hard to be constantly entertaining when you're used to delivering a finished edit rather than a live audience. For example, Logan Paul had over 100,000 people in his first stream but after that, the numbers dropped just cause that’s not his world. Live Streaming is a constant conversation. It’s the opposite of YouTube.

I remember seeing YouTubers flood to Twitch after the adpocalypse and feeling like it made no sense. A lot of vloggers and creators who never expressed any interest in video games were all suddenly obsessed with Fortnite. However, when people like Alex Wex came to Twitch they brought genuine love of gaming, skill, and a great sense of community.

What insight can you give into the world of a producer? Especially on the internet, how to figure out what videos are gonna get views or go viral?

It’s a case by case basis depending on what you make. With Challenge Chalice, we made it during the high point of internet challenges and we had consistent challenges to make content with constantly, but this past year challenges have kinda quieted down so that got more difficult. We revisited and revised a lot of earlier challenges to make them more interesting, and that has to do with being present during every step of the process. You can’t slack off on anything, from script to editing. Being organized is key, and definitely take on the ideas and criticisms of the people working with you. Be flexible and open-minded. It’s not about balance, it’s about harmony.

Hack-n-slash? RPG? Or FPS? And why?

That’s complicated. Overwatch is one of my favorite games but it doesn’t play exactly like an FPS. For me, hack-n-slash for games like Dead Cells, Rogue Lights, I love games with massive replay value. I’m playing Diablo 3 on switch right now and I love it.

What games are best for streaming? Does the game you play matter?

A little, but it shouldn’t be everything. You want your audience to gravitate towards your personality. Never play something you don’t enjoy playing. I love Overwatch and it’s not one of the current hot stream games but I love playing it. Story games are complicated. If people miss parts of story mode games they tune it out cause they won’t know what’s going on. More than anything put your own spin on what you’re doing. For example, when I do Dead By Daylight I do stream vs chat where my chat helps the survivors escape if I’m playing the killer. In fact, chatting streams are starting to really blow up. It’s more about the person playing than the game they play.

What game has you hype for 2019?

That’s tough, but probably Kingdom Hearts 3. I’m excited for Smash Bros for my last game of 2018 too.

What led you to Twitch?

I’d seen some of it, but Tom had been doing it for 6 months and kept suggesting it until one day I finally did. I had a decent setup with an ultra-wide monitor and Tom’s old video capture device and I started streaming Dead by Daylight. We actually came into the name Jank Squad because of how janky the streams were in the beginning.

What led you to leave FBE and what are you working on now?

I wanted to focus more on my Twitch, and it was exhausting streaming at work on the days when I’m also streaming at home. I wanted to give my audience the most energy I could and be more involved with them as a community. I’m creating new ways to interact with my audience, more active in my Discord, and after working there for 5 years I felt stuck. There wasn’t any new learning experience and things felt a little sour and monotonous with the new direction things were going in. I’m actually getting a new camera and a green screen to upgrade the stream quality. I’d love to make partner with Twitch.

What’s the dream?

I take things to step by step. I’m definitely in a transition right now. I’m looking for another good full-time job at the moment. I’d love to be a full-time streamer but I’d also love to produce my own stuff and then stream after work. Streaming is probably one of the most consistent things I’ve ever done. Funny enough, that’s part of what got me into it cause Tom knew my leisure activity was video games, and streaming just takes that to another level. It definitely takes work, but the community you foster on this platform is unlike any other with the rating system and how everything is set up.

Alright so the zombie apocalypse is upon us and you can have 1 mortal character, one god tier video game character, and one Reactor in your survival squad, who you got?

Kratos from God of War 2 causes his chain blades would tear through everything, my regular would be Leon from Resident Evil 4 cause his aim is amazing and he’s used to zombies, and my Reactor would be Chelsea cause she knows so much about The Walking Dead. That’s my squad.

I appreciate that. I like to think I’m dope in some ways but I also do my best to keep it real, keep myself humble, and not letting the numbers get to my head. Hi, this is Dixie! As I said, there was no Monday meeting this week because Gen Con just wrapped up and everyone is either traveling, on vacation, or didn’t volunteer to have a 2-4 person meeting in which we couldn’t do much without the rest of the team (a wise choice, no? We’re rather wise). Rich will be back next week with a full update, much as we did for UK Games Expo a few months back, but until then they’ve (unwisely, probably) left me in charge with no oversight. I say this week is “aberrant” because many folks were out of the office, but also because of the Aberrant Kickstarter funding! More on that later.

As most of you know from previous blogs, we didn’t have a booth at Gen Con this year, but that was a very intentional choice, and shouldn’t be seen as a negative indicator of anything. We did have books for sale at both Studio 2 and IPR, and we did some panels! The members of the team who did go had a chance to attend more meetings and panels, as well as roam the floor a bit more to reach out to folks. (I didn’t go, but I bought a t-shirt and buttons in D.C., played some video games, did a cool playtest with some friends, and didn’t have to walk around in Indianapolis in the summer, so…)

The stress and excitement of Gen Con is over for the time being and we can start working on PAX Unplugged, Save Against Fear, and all the rest! Also Gen Con looks as if it was a great success for us, our fans, and our freelancers. (Additionally, Rich and Eddy are on vacation, and I hope they’re having a grand time! That said, Eddy needs to come back so I can ping him with ridiculous things on Skype throughout the day.)

Why you shouldn’t let media agencies design your creative

The obsession with adtech has yielded some baffling design choices. Buying the space has somehow become more important than designing for the space. This process does not help anyone in the chain, least of all consumers, who are ultimately the people that will hopefully pay for your product.

In this post focusing on the UAE,  I look at a series of paid ads on social networks and publishers, using my mobile as the primary browsing device. I look at design, copy and user journey issues which can lead to massive sales funnel leaks. Plenty has already been written about mobile being used more and more, which is why mobile optimized design is so crucial to ensure best use of marketing budget, and more importantly, prioritize the customer.

Part 1. The case of Social Media ads

Social Media remains the most abused channel for marketing in the region because marketers look at it as a cheaper channel, rather than a channel to invest in, engage in actual conversation and drive conversions. This is the digital front line after all. We have now passed the valley of despair, where the design asset doesn’t match the required spec size, and have moved on to the mountain of mediocrity as far as best practice goes.

Is this because marketers no longer want to pay for creative? Is it because they don’t know any better? Who knows. Let’s look at some examples:

TWITTER

The largest Twitter advertisers currently in terms of volume appear to be automotive ones. Here’s a selection of the top 4:

Most of them have reasonable images, but the Volkswagen one stood out for “cram as much text as possible onto a Twitter ad”. The banner text is completely unreadable on mobile. Considering that’s where most of your social engagement will be, this seems like a waste of copy.

The GMC one has a non brand URL which will not inspire confidence in prospects, but let’s look closer at some of the wonderful copy text:

“Rest assured of” and “inovative” are basic grammar and spelling mistakes (change to ‘rest assured that’ and ‘innovative’ with a double n).

With the GMC, a double negative leads to utter confusion along with the chance to “Leady By Example”. Who’s writing this stuff? A 5 year old?

I did message them on twitter and they responded that they amended it.

Things get even better when one actually engages and is taken to a landing page of sorts, where the prospect is supposed to register for a test drive:

On the left, we see the first landing page, after your selection you are taken to the never ending form on the right.

For mobile users, less is more. Having one car fill up the width of the mobile browser and allowing a thumb scroll interaction would be better than presenting both options at once.

The inconsistent use of font size, emboldening and poor distributor logos all detract from what ostensibly is a premium vehicle.

Moving onto the form itself, it’s a textbook case of designing for inputs to the brand CRM / ERP system, not for the user. If you’re interrupting people on a dynamic social network, (and even if not), best practice for forms dictates 3 fields or 4 at the maximum.

Next up on Twitter ads, the Property sector:

Once again, the “leave no white space unfilled” theory is in full effect. You didn’t actually want to enjoy a full width view of the promoted apartment did you? I’ll just leave that there.

Yes, you’re seeing it correctly. It’s an online brochure. One un-clickable image. With the requirement to click something in the middle or, the X in the corner first.

But wait, something in the main menu looks like it might have more info, unfortunately, the table of contents did not have… a table of contents.

So I’ll be forced to schlep down to the store, wherever that is….

I haven’t found a Twitch channel yet which gives me access to live page turning but i’m sure the good folks at Lulu can oblige.

In some cases, promoted tweets did not resolve to a landing page at all. 

I was also about to go bananas at yet another spelling error (shouldn’t it be “Unstoppables”?) but it turns out it is actually the name of the product. Forget fake news, P&G are promoting fake spelling:

INSTAGRAM

On Instagram, things aren’t much better, with the main errors being too much copy text which renders the design unreadable, or, for those ‘grams that link out to a browser, the user is led to a non mobile optimized final destination.

For the purposes of brevity, I’ll just show one example, that of twofour54:

Whilst you do have to wade through rather a lot of content before you get the information that you require, at least it is optimized for mobile viewing. Obviously I’m not going to be downloading a brochure on my phone so I click the url to take me to the money page, where I will hopefully get detailed answers as per my buyer persona, and twofour can get me to hand over my details for their database.

It was all going so well, until I clicked out, and then everything just made my eyes hurt. Additionally, not taking me to an inside page meant I had to start the journey all over again and with that tiny font, I didn’t know where to start.

FACEBOOK

Hopping over to Facebook, Panasonic has clearly spent all its money on the hardware with none left over for decent graphic designers, or web designers for that matter. Take a look:

Husband comes home to find wife behind alien force field. Armed only with his briefcase, how will he reach her?

Alien force field secretly permeates dining room whilst you’re out at work all day.

And the most terrifying of all:

Alien spores trap family in unending spiral of doom.

(also its “breathe” not “breath” - sadly aliens can’t be defeated by poor spelling)

Haunted by the big blue blanket, I click on the required URL to see what else Panasonic has up their sleeve.

The CS-C24TKF could be Klingon for ‘commence countdown’. Looks like a jet engine in the background.

Notice that bit of text peeking out on the right? That’s how it appears in the mobile screen. You can actually scroll on the horizontal plane as well as the vertical plane. This is way too  confusing and the user experience suffers as a result.

So far, I understand nothing.

Scrolling further, and the copy text is about as engaging as a plumbing manual. Also, this text-in-banner image simply doesn’t work on mobile. Everything is still way too small. If these are the most important marketable features of the product, why aren’t they more visible?

WAIT  A SECOND! The blasted blue blanket of bewilderment is back and now it has green friends which are clearly preventing the woman from getting off the couch...... 

No review of regional creative would be complete without the old; “stick the product next to a sand dune, and the Middle Easterners will know its for them”. 

Take note of the dual colors. Not sure if this means it’s blowing out 55 degree air or it counters it. Help!

This image tells me nothing. It could be a water flask for my desert hiking trips for all I know. Why is it so hard just to get some decent images and write copy that converts. One minute alien forces are coming out my ac, next i’m stranded in the desert with this weird contraption.

Nevertheless I persist and try to navigate to buying (although I know full well this isn’t an ecommerce site).

First, if i’m online, why not default to “online showrooms”?

Second, just no. Its WAY too complicated to go through all the instructions. I do not want your product that badly that I need a PHD in form filling to get round your awful geolocation.

How do I know what category? What’s a sub category? What happened to our CS-C24TKF? Why didn’t you tell me what category it was in?  

This is another case of repurposing content with no regard for the medium or the user. This looks like a trade marketing brochure. It certainly isn’t as engaging and easy to interact with as most B2C brands. The stock imagery gives it an outdated feel. There is no consideration to a purchase funnel here. The user is left alone to try and navigate a horizontal and vertical scrolling site, with multiple “brand names” (Jet stream, Econavi, Panasonic) and has no idea where to go or what to do.

The best Panasonic can hope for in the absence of investing in their digital channels is the dreaded “post a comment to win” type of social interaction.  Which will inevitably be followed with the ubiquitous “interested please review my profile” comment, by the carefully uncurated audience, cultivated as a result of not investing in great web design and copy that converts.

B2B audiences fare no better, with Thomson Reuters dipping its toe in the SME arena. This is a data capture exercise which is most likely being used to add to the excellent and comprehensive Zawya Company Profiles database (Reuters acquired Zawya earlier), however, the on-boarding suffers from poor mobile optimization.

First I followed the journey from the Facebook ad:

I was taken to the landing page, within the Facebook container:

Nice large CTA at the top, but the rest of the space is taken up by waffle. On mobile and particularly as a result of a paid ad, users need a bold statement, a problem that they need a solution to. This will stimulate them to continue the journey. 

In addition, use of an animated header similar to Bloomberg or Backchannel would have drawn the user in

Now obviously I’m not suggesting that Reuters throw animated lipsticks all over the landing page, but the point is that a B2B audience deserves some nice front end and it would stand out amongst competitors. 

Scrolling down…

All of a sudden the header appears to have doubled in size, taking up almost half the screen. Why? And, i’m now forced to go through the rigmarole of a signup, which experience tells me will likely be painful, without any reassurance on what I will get if I do so.

I carry on browsing and...

We have entered “lasagna design” territory -  piling everything on top of each other. Not a great UX.

I also saw the same ad on Instagram so I followed from there and was taken to the same site but directly in the browser. Much of the same ensued. 

Below is part of the form where you register your company: 

Pre-populating a form field can be super useful for users, but unless it deploys quickly and is optimized for the mobile screen (above you can see how part of the company name doesn’t fit in the window) it’s frustrating for users and often easier for them to type it in themselves.

The leaders in search tools are Algolia. Using their design and technology, users can get faster access to the information they need.

Part 2. Publishers and Display ad journeys

Much has been made in international marketing circles about brand ads appearing next to offensive content on social networks and youtube. Sleeping Giants has been doing a great job of actively trying to pressure brands to pull ads from hateful news sites including Breitbart.com

This is how users report the brands that advertise to the Sleeping Giants account:

Thanks to the joy of programmatic (I assume) we managed to see a few homegrown brands appear on this particular publisher:

As of today, Fulfilme.com, an online grocery store backed by NMC is advertising (desktop site)

Regional publishers more often than not, have not optimized for mobile. This is especially worrisome as the majority of titles are franchised from the mature markets and the parent title has obviously followed best practice. Why doesn’t the franchisee follow suit?

Below, 2 titles from the Motivate Publisher, Campaign Middle East, Cyclist Middle East:

There’s a reason I picked this publisher. Campaign Middle East is a B2B magazine for the advertising and communication industry. It frequently reports on digital topics, with contributors noting on many occasions the proliferation of content consumption on mobile. It is therefore absurd that a publisher that talks to companies in this domain doesn’t have a mobile optimized site.

Leaving Thousands of Ad Revenue dollars on the table

This also leaves thousands of potential ad dollars on the table. Much of the growth in Campaign website traffic has been driven by referrals from social channels. As we already know, social is largely consumed on mobile. If Campaign Middle East were to develop a strong mobile presence, and associated ad space, hundreds more clients from the suppliers in digital technology, design and marketing would populate the space with their ads.

Using a CPC model, and potentially combined with an affiliate model, Campaign could grow its sales revenue efficiently whilst clients clearly get value for money.

Some publishers make no secret of their business model. ElleArabia.com has an excessive amount of ads placed next to a tiny amount of content:

Publisher: We need ads to support our content

Brand: Or is it the other way around….?

These  Dior ads which appear to be on every female focused lifestyle digital property at the moment, resolve to the international site, dior.com. Ideally you’d send your local traffic to a local landing page. More on that in a later post.

More display horror from the property sector again, this time from Damac:

The landing page is ok, although cutting off the sentence near the bottom of the frame  makes me nervous that the rest of the mobile experience will be weak.

Unlike others in the space who utilize excessively long form fields, when I clicked to register my interest, there was no form at all.

Money is being left on the table. Again.

Part 3: Emailers

I’ll use the experience of my bank. Financial services firms are notorious for terrible design, even those who push mobile banking in their promotional campaigns appear to forget that their BTL comms needs to be mobile optimized as well.

As you can see, this email is being read in my mobile device. The readable parts are the subject line thanks to Apple. You can now compare the unreadability of the rest of the text. There appear to be great offers in here but I can’t read them without zooming.

With a tri-column design, this should be collapsed in the mobile view, for a single column approach. With this tiny font, my fat thumb may misclick.

It turns out there is an entire table of offers in the email. So I scroll and zoom:

The minute I see the word “avail” i’m already put off (see analysis section for more on this).

Have you noticed there is no clear CTA in each of the offers? I’m not sure what part I should click and if it will take me to the specific offer. Or how to redeem this offer. So much information packed into this mail, except what I, as the user should do.

Oh great, i’m at another non mobile optimized screen and I didn’t land on the specific offer I clicked. Why? Why do i have to go through the entire journey again? How can I easily find the offer I wanted?

And what about that menu? My fat finger cannot distinctly click on one of those black options.

Co-marketing with banks and offer redemption is a great way to reach a targeted user base, but instead of optimizing for customer journeys, banks leave us to wander in the wilderness, most likely dropping out of the entire funnel. Which means poor redemption rates.

Banks make money when I use my card, so it’s really in their interest to design a journey so I will buy buy buy. I can’t do anything with this.

Analysis

All advertisers seek to engage users. Engagement comes from design and, on digital channels, by usability. Of course it can be argued that many brands seek only awareness, rather than to complete the entire journey from awareness to purchase. However, since digital is the only channel that offers the chance to do this, there is no reason why more brands cannot drive to checkout. This offers immediate ROI on your marketing spend.

Nevertheless, if the call to action on social channels is to “Learn More” or click on a link, you need to make sure that

a) the content is there

b) it is designed for mobile and

c) you don’t waste users time.

By shifting the focus back to creative agencies, you ensure that the quality of your brand does not suffer. Creative agencies have user delight at their core, media agencies are more concerned with reach and margins. Brands that do pay more attention to design can easily win here.

Let’s look at a one hypothetical example of a brand that seeks to drive awareness through paid ads on social channels:

Get the users attention in a busy timeline

Getting the users attention in a busy timeline is priority number one. This can be done by great graphics, well produced videos and perfect copytext. But don’t repeat the same creative. Users will become immune. Media agencies who do not frequency cap ads are the bane of consumers lives. Make sure you have a varied portfolio

Have a great reason to pull them out of the social environment

The next step. If you are asking users to link away from a social channel where they want to be spending most of their time, there has to be something riveting for them to do. Riveting for consumers does not usually involve filling out forms. With a varied portfolio of ads, it will be easy to measure which ones consumers are most interested in. Users will click on something to find out more information, here they are in the consideration stage. If there isn’t a huge amount more info to give them - then default to delighting them with design. Everyone will spend time with beautifully crafted design and text. If you don’t have access to great front end designers, use excellent witty copywriters.

Stick to the funnel and try to move to email

If you have managed to successfully complete this step, and you need to continue conversing with the customer to eventually shepherd them to a purchase offline (and on their own terms), then retarget them (with a different creative) on other channels, this time offering them something of value in order for them to leave you their contact details. Emails are the channel that actually result in the best ROI. But you only want to be emailing those that are far enough down the purchase funnel in order to keep conversion rates high and your database relatively clean. Again, make sure your emails are mobile optimized and use the latest design techniques.

Double check its actually mobile optimized

When designing for mobile, about 70% of brands believe that having the content fit in a mobile screen is equal to it being mobile optimized. If your senior executives cannot read all of the content or somebody has to pinch and zoom, then it’s not mobile optimized.

The ROI of Great Design

Essentially you get what you pay for with design. If you choose to spend as little as possible on creative, you will get the corresponding low quality user base. This is acutely true in emerging markets. If you’re a brand reading this you’ll most likely be suffering from a deluge of job related requests on your social channels rather than those that are high quality users, engaged in a conversation and likely to purchase. Because you spent all your money on buying the ad space and nothing on the creative to fill it.

Once again, it can reasonably be argued that the overall quality of audience in this region is low compared to other territories, why spend more when you can spend less. However, we have a wildly heterogeneous audience in the UAE (compared to other GCC markets). Higher quality users are attracted by proper copy using the right syntax and spelling, and excellent design.

By not catering to these users you are leaving money on the table. These users respond to better quality design and tend to be those that will have a higher LTV and higher retention rates.

Obviously this reduces your cost for acquiring customers, which means more money in the bank for you.

Finally, and I cannot stress this enough, investing in great design and UX at the beginning, massively reduces the amount you will spend on support afterwards. A known expenditure for design is much more preferable than an unknown expenditure on community management and engagement and call centres who you may be paying for by the hour.

Advertising online is largely a self serve method. You no longer have to go through an intermediary (ie a media agency) to get access to the space. It is cheaper to either hire or train media buying staff in house than it is to outsource to a media buying agency. If you keep media buying in house you are already saving 10 - 15% of your media buy costs (this percentage would be charged by the agency).

In addition, you get greater transparency on where your media is being spent. By spending less on media and investing more in design and creative, the results will allow a quicker ROI and the time spent to recoup that investment will be shorter. And, great design is the cornerstone of competitive advertising strategies.

When outsourcing digital design you’ll need to look for the following roles:

Graphic Design

Front End Design

UX and UI Design

Copywriters (ideally not bilingual, get one for each language you operate in)

Email Design

Mobile Design

Focus on delighting users, wowing them with creativity and usability and making it as easy as possible for them to accomplish whatever task is required.

Yes, we’re down to the last few days of the Deviant: The Renegades Kickstarter campaign, and backers have been talking full-time with developer Eric Zawadzki about all the options contained in the previews AND in the Stretch Goal projects. It’s been really great seeing folks come up with how popular (and unpopular, for that matter) characters in various media can be replicated in Deviant.

There’s been a ton of them, and it’s just awesome how flexible the character creation section is! Dave Brookshaw’s extensive process and playtesting is really paying off with a system that absolutely shines.

So, c’mon! Check it out while we’re still rolling and if you pledge you’ll be getting those sweet Stretch Goal projects as well as Deviant itself with your pledge!

And while Deviant is the last KS standing right now, our joint Creature Collection KS with Handiwork Games ended over the weekend with a satisfying amount that’s over 400% our funding amount, a great number of backers, and a fantastic 224 pages (we started with 160).

A huge round of thanks and appreciation to Handiwork and Jon and all his team over there! It is really one sweet project they put together – and even before the KS was over they had hired new writers and artists to start on the added sections. Our Creature Collection is in good hand(s) – iwork.

OK, even I think that’s a groaner, but I wrote it and it’s staying in as I gotta move on to the next topic!

Over the weekend, I also attended the SAVE convention in Harrisburg, PA. Not only was I joined by Eddy and Dixie, but surprise guest Neall Raemonn Price showed up! He was able to join us on panels, and we had a lot, I mean A LOT, of discussion of upcoming projects – tons of Scion talk, but also a couple of upcoming and currently secret projects.

SAVE itself was bigger than ever, and Saturday it was packed in the gaming area. Even more interesting to me, was the education and therapy tracks (as opposed to the game design and gaming ones I was in), because these were also packed with folks wanting to discuss and learn about how our hobby can be used to build understanding and help with therapeutic efforts.

What a fantastic place we are now in where we don’t have to only mention those anecdotal stories of roleplaying helping folks in their real lives, we now have real, practicing therapists and educators stepping up with methodologies. Very proud of my friends in the Bodhana Group for being forerunners in this effort!

On a personal gaming level, Friday night at the convention I stepped up and DM’d my long-time D&D world for the first time for adults in about thirty years. I just felt like if we’re publishing so many D&D 5e based game lines, I needed to be able to talk about them with experience, not just from playing a few campaigns.

So I girded my loins, converted an adventure I’d written that was published in White Wolf Magazine #15, and sat down with Eddy, Dixie, Neall, and Jen, Jack, and the Captain, from Bodhana. It was extremely fun, and very satisfying – even if we roleplayed so hard the party never actually got into the dungeon part!

They did however talk themselves into a free room at a very nice inn due to some high charisma dice rolling and simple chicanery, burn up two enemies and part of a pine forest, and team-work the hell out of young Frost Giant.

I’ve received a fair number of requests to continue the game, so that’s a good sign, and I’ll just have to see what I can do. Dunno if I’ve shaken off all the rust from decades of not running a game, but I also hate saying no to people who want to join me in my imaginary world. So….

The folks at DTRPG used Pugmire as their first premiere project and worked up an awesome version of the core book, that they then offered as a free download – and I understand that they’ve had over 7,000 of those downloads!

Yep, just when you think things are working as planned, you get a surprise.

In the case in the illustration above by our old pal Sam Araya, it’s a surprise thanks to the Contagion Chronicle!

Which is, right now, as you read this, seeping into our reality on Kickstarter!

Now, since we funded, support for this one has been steady, but slow. Part of that, we have no doubt, are the adjusted International shipping costs I talked about on this blog a couple of weeks ago.

There’s also a part that is kind of interesting, which is folks waiting to hear about a revealed section of the text that features a region or that has more to do with their favorite CofD game line. Well, we certainly hope that they like what they see when “their” section of text shows up!

In any case, we’re actually pretty happy with where this Kickstarter has been going, and we do hope more folks can jump on before the end a couple of weeks from now.

I was also really happy just this last week to listen to last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast featuring an engrossing and fun interview with Chris Spivey. It is really interesting, and I think is an excellent place for anyone concerned about how we’ll be bringing Cthulhu into Scion 2e to get an idea of how Chris will be developing that project, and how he’ll be handling the built-in challenges of the source material.

Today, though, we were less happy with having to get together during the meeting and talk about how we need to figure out what broke in our proofing process with our Scion 2e core books.

I’ll talk more about this when we get all the information in, but it seems pretty sure that a number of errata fixes that Neall input did not “stick”, but remained as errors. He is currently, painstakingly, going back through his errata notes and reconstructing what changes need to be made.

The last I checked, he hasn’t found a pattern for why some changes stayed, and others did not, nor why this happened with these two books, but not on the dozen-plus books that have previously used the same proofing process. While I’d like to know that, and will, our in-house devs have already taken over the errata input phase so that our book developers only have to notate the PDF.

This will add another stage, but will also give us an additional chance to identify whether errata that we gathered is actually in a book.

We’ll be able to tell better once Neall finishes his pass, but we’re not seeing anything that breaks the game or makes it unplayable. Certainly, the rules as they stand have worked for the many Scion 2e groups who are already playing the game, including the fraction of Actual Play groups we can highlight each week in our Media section below.

But it is extremely frustrating for us, and Neall, but also for all of the Scion community that stepped up to pore through the Backer PDF and send us what they found. Sometimes, in publishing, despite all your safeguards, stuff slips in. Here’s a painful example of a process that worked…until it didn’t.

So, some weeks you can really enjoy the whole process of making something that didn’t exist before, and other weeks you do the job because that’s what you do, and others you have to try and fix what broke. Sometimes all those weeks are all in one week!

Kind of a personal one, but let’s celebrate that I no longer live in Atlanta…as the pollen clouds waft down and cover all surfaces with a fine green/yellow dust. It’s like the Martian invasion in War of the Worlds, and I’m glad not to sneeze my way through it as Spring arrives full-force!

Next week, we’ll be starting our Kickstarter for the Contagion Chronicle, which is a crossover chronicle featuring all of the game lines for Chronicles of Darkness.

Like all of our Kickstarter campaigns, you’ll be hearing a lot about this in the weeks to come, so I figured that this week, I’ll just go a little into how we came up with the idea to begin with.

We have received, over the years, many requests for crossover rules for the Chronicles of Darkness. Which makes sense, as CofD, unlike its predecessor, the World of Darkness, was created with the idea that all the game lines would have a similar, if not the same, rules set.

I’m not talking about the Storyteller and Storytelling Systems which are the rules for rolling dice, but the individual game line rules sets, like Disciplines, Gifts, cosmology, those sorts of things.

With folks asking for crossover rules and tips, I suggested to our crew here that a crossover book would be something that could also be really helpful in providing new content for game lines that we were putting out less projects for that year.

Pretty much the same thinking as the Dark Eras books.

I wound up talking with Matthew Dawkins at the Vampire convention in New Orleans – the same one where we agreed on the deal for They Came From Beneath the Sea! – and he made the point that a whoppin’ book of pure rules with a bit of advice wouldn’t necessarily be as much fun as a crossover book that featured a setting where those rules and that advice could be seen in action.

This tied in with my thinking on adding default Chronicles to each of the 2nd Edition CofD lines: provide an example that people could either use wholecloth or could take pieces of or just be inspired by for their own Chronicles.

Fun to read, and examples of how a Chronicle could work. So this crossover Chronicle would be the prime example of how to use all the various supernatural character types and their cultures in one big setting match up, usable as written and usable as examples and overall, no matter what, fun to read.

Matthew went off and came up with an external threat; something not featured in any of our previous material, but which could be part of any of our CofD game lines. Something that threatened the supernatural world so much that the various denizens would have reasons to ally themselves – no matter how treacherously – to deal with it. And so the Contagion was born.

We’ll bring you more concrete info on the Contagion Chronicle next week; I’m hoping to sit down with Matthew and chat a bit on the highlights of the project, and share that info with you. We’re all really excited by this project as we’ve never really done anything like this before. It’s a discrete Chronicle, but it’s appropriate for all of our CofD game lines, and as a way to illustrate how something can be built that encompasses all of a setting no matter how disjointed, I think it will be handy for other game settings as well.

I also want to call out last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast where the Titanic Trio take turns “selling” different game lines of ours. It is probably the most energized and fun recording that they’ve done. Something about the timed, short, pitches just seems to bring out the best in the three of them.

TODAY’S REASON TO CELEBRATE: 

St. Patty’s Day or St. Paddy’s Day! Either way, we just had it Sunday, and while my celebration mostly takes the form of corned beef, cabbage, and green-dyed Birch Beer these days, once upon a time it was the old White Wolf tradition to meet for brunch and line up at the local Irish Pub to get in there as they opened and spend the rest of the day there drinking (or not) and having fun. It was a grand tradition of fellowship, and so here’s to the old gang!
