PLEASE tell me more about chinese sirius. i need to know about his relationship to his family and how that affects his relationship to his culture.

ahhh okay!! there’s one main point that i touched on here about the expectations on eldest sons to become the provider or caretaker of the family (particularly his parents) as he becomes an adult. like come ON imagine being raised in that environment and then running away and leaving it all behind…him being chinese just amplifies how difficult this would have been and creates such an interesting perspective on how he dealt with it after…it’s not just leaving an abusive home behind, it’s ‘abandoning’ one’s culture and the traditions that come with it!!!! and then there’s sirius who already feels alienated from his culture and his heritage due to being raised in an extremely white society where he’s ‘too chinese’ for them and ‘not chinese enough’ in his homeland.

chinese culture is also very heavily focused on family and up holding familial and patriarchal values. in ancient times, it was a literal crime to disobey one’s parents, and that idea of authoritarian, almost totalitarian parental figures carries through to modern chinese culture as well. the stereotype of super strict and severe chinese parents is not entirely unfounded: this could be a way that sirius almost ‘justifies’ or ‘normalises’ the way he’s treated. even after running away, he associates the abuse with the way his culture is set up. it’s not difficult to imagine sirius becoming extremely estranged from not just his family, but his culture as well by extent, once he leaves. he links his family directly to his culture, and decides he wants nothing to do with either.
