Academic Success Tips from My Parents
Out of all the things my parents enforced in my siblings and I, the most profound were educational and life success tips. Legit would get 100% regardless of the subject/ course/ workload. Here’s a bunch of them.
Before class:
Spend no more than a quarter of the journey to class chilling. 
Organize your study materials according to subject. Files and folders in the back, then textbooks, then notebooks. Stationery in appropriate places.
Always carry a folder full of blank sheets (plain, graphed, all the kinds!).
Fix your bag before you sleep. Hang your wristwatch on the strap so you don’t forget it when you go.
Clear your desk/study area as soon as you’re done - you’re not allowed to move out of that spot until you do.
If you have a study journal/ school diary/ study guide, read it everyday before class. 
Be the first one there, at least 15 minutes early (30 mins to an hour early is favourable).
If the teacher walks in, you better greet them with a smile, regardless if they’re crabby or not. Everyday.
You have the option to relax and do whatever before the teacher walks in. However, you have to preview the lesson before it starts. No exceptions.
Make ‘preview’ notes, which is basically little helpful tidbits about what’s to come, stuff you’re not sure about, questions and guides, how formulas connect - literally anything that’ll make the class go smoother for you.
During class:
You can talk to your friends before class, but as soon as it starts, not a word or glance in their direction.
Have all your materials either out if you have the space, or within reach. 
Listen carefully and take notes where appropriate (on printed ppts, on the corners and margins of the textbook, or an actual notebook), always, every class. There’s no such thing as ‘I didn’t take any notes today’ or ‘There wasn’t anything going on’. 
Always write the date and the day. Make an index as you go.
No highlighters during class. Underline textbooks with pencil only, and use pencils for sketches.
Whenever a teacher assigns work or extra readings or reference materials, write them down - always. Optional or not.
You better write down test/ quiz/ exam dates, even if they’re happening the next day and you’ll obviously remember. 
Speaking of exams, if the teacher mentions that word, write down everything they say, dialogue tags and all.
Answer as much questions as you can. It would be favourable if you answer twice per class or more, but it’s fine if you don’t. Your performance matters more.
Give people a chance to answer and ask questions.
Listen to what they’re saying and what response the teacher gives, even if you know it. Listening skills are important.
If an exercise is assigned during class, get on it like it’s an exam, and show the teacher your work (if possible) for corrections.  
If there’s a couple minutes before the class ends, but the teacher’s lesson finished for whatever reason (a final exercise is going on and you finished, they’re taking questions etc.) you keep to yourself if you’re not talking to the teacher. Read a book, do some work, anything productive.
You can help your friends and classmates now. Never say no, even if you’re not sure, say so and let them know you’re willing to struggle with them for a solution.
If you lend stationery, get it back before you bounce.
Arrange your materials backwards as you go through the day.
If you have another class right after, you better get over there immediately. It doesn’t matter if you’ve gotten more than enough time to mess around. Take your friends if you if you’d like.
During breaks:
Study, read, review, or preview. Something light for at least a quarter of the break this time.
If someone asks for help, help them (again). It’s good practice for you to see if you understand, and it’s good practice for when you go out into the world.
NEVER GO TO TEACHERS UNLESS IT’S ABSOLUTELY DETRIMENTAL.
If you have nothing light you can do, you can do whatever. 
After class:
Start by finishing all your homework. It isn’t due this week? Doesn’t matter. Always do your homework as soon as it’s assigned.
Once you’re done with your homework, check your study journal/ school diary/ study guide again. Take note of what’s coming up.
stUDY NOW PLEASE. All the subjects / courses you’ll have tomorrow should be either a) memorized if you didn’t have more than an hour of homework time or b) read and reviewed and tried and tested if you did. 
You can use highlighters now. Make summary notes and formula master lists. 
Organize your stuff again. 
You’re caught up with everything and barely did an hour today? Time to bust out the optional readings then.
You have no extra stuff too? Time to go on the computer and get some resources yourself. 
If there’s a big project, plan every step with excessively precise details. Follow them. Don’t forget to add buffers in case you miss something.
You missed something? Plan all over again. 
Go to sleep by 7 if you’re in school and 10 if you’re in college. You haven’t finished studying? I’ll wake you up at 3/4 in the morning then.
Did I mention do your assignments the day they’re assigned to you?
No relaxing till the weekend. You wake up, go to classes, come back, shower, eat, then study until you go to bed. Oh, and lay out your clothes right down to the shoes and socks (accessories too) right before you do.
Weekends:
Sike. You only get one day off. 
(Legit tho, back in the day, my work week was from Sunday to Thursday, and my parents would allow Thursday night and half of Friday off. We had to get up at eight-thirty in the morning max and study until lunch with zero breaks. Lunch would usually be at 1:30 pm. You can forget about most of Saturday too. We’d study till lunch, then have to go back again until late afternoon (about 5:30 pm - 4:30 if we were lucky). And then of course, since we were starting back on Sunday, we’d be in bed by 7. People would wonder how in the world we’d be able to sleep at 7 with all that we had to do as students - now you know.)
Don’t get me started on exams lol. This may seem harsh, but without this type of discipline, I wouldn’t be doing as okay as I do now with the subpar standards I’ve seemed to developed in college. Well. I’ve got a bunch of other things I used to do (some still do), as these are only the ones I could remember on the top of my head. More coming soon maybe?

A Typical Week: Spring 2021
Before getting into the actual content, I thought I would just point out that this is my 100th blog post! You can check out the full list here. 
As noted in my fall 2020 version of this post, my week is primarily dictated by my current course schedule. (To check out all of my past courses, click here). Furthermore, the way I write these posts is to focus on academics as they're a big part of my life, but also the most natural thing to write about publicly. This post should give you a realistic sense of the structure of my week and courses. I thought it may be useful to contrast expectations and reality when it comes to productivity. Early in the semester, I mapped out my idealized homework schedule around my meetings and assignment deadlines. The first row lists deadlines. The other rows are split by my meals (lunch and dinner). Even if I don’t strictly follow the schedule, spending the time to map things out is quite useful. To write about my real schedule, I actually looked back through data from my time tracking application, Toggl Track. I know this is a very long post, but it wasn’t really interesting enough to become a two-parter.

A typical school day starts off with my 9:00 (or 9:10) alarm. I also often have a second alarm set for 9:15 as a backup. Here at college, I simply use the default clock app on my phone and have it play from my favorites playlist on Spotify. I very occasionally need to wake up earlier to finish up an assignment as midnight is my strict cutoff for doing work. I know a consistent sleep schedule is very important, but it’s definitely something I struggle with.
Monday:
My week begins with a 9:20 math class. The specific course is math methods which as previously explained is an applied math course from the physics department that is required for physics and engineering majors. We usually start off by going over the pre-class check in (PCCI) and/or other questions students have. This review is followed by a lecture on new material. Throughout the class, we work through example problems in breakout rooms (on Zoom whiteboards) and answer multiple-choice questions using the poll feature. (The poll questions are anonymous and ungraded). Partway through the class, we get a 4-minute break. One nice thing about this class is that we actually thoroughly go through the example problems when we regroup as an entire class. This is important because, without feedback, practice is of limited utility. Furthermore, going over the problem gives me a chance to get everything into my notes. The integration of lectures with practice is something I really appreciate about this course. In past math classes, the format has been a lecture followed by a worksheet of practice problems. While that model sometimes makes sense, I much prefer this integrated approach.  One issue with leaving practice until the end is that you sometimes run out of time and don’t catch knowledge gaps until the end of class. After math methods, I get a 20-minute break during which I often listen to the latest episode of The Daily (a short new podcast from the New York Times). 
Next up is my philosophy of logic class which starts with a few minutes of breathing and stretching. On the first day of class, I thought this was a really strange thing, but have come to appreciate it. Afterward, we go over any relevant announcements and sometimes debrief the previous class. This class is different from my other classes in that it is reading and discussion-based. We spend most of the class in the main room strengthening our understanding of the reading through full class discussions and mini-lectures. Even though the class is already very small (13 students), we also make use of breakout rooms to work through study questions. Our tests are pyramid style which means we spend one class period working independently and another class on the same questions in a small group. We also have short quizzes, called mini check-ins,  every few weeks. Next up is lunch during which I sometimes listen to a podcast or audiobook. After lunch, I have my computer systems lab. The teaching assistant of my lab section starts off with a quick introduction to the assignment. We then work independently and ask questions as they come up. Even though we don’t really work collaboratively the lab is sort of fun because it’s less formal than a regular class. For the first part of the semester, the lab assignments often took way longer than the allotted time (and sometimes longer than our projects) so I often spent more of the afternoon finishing up the assignment. Fortunately, the course staff was made aware of this issue and adjusted accordingly. At Smith, while some classes have teaching assistants who help out during class, all of the classes are taught and run by our actual professors. After finishing up my lab assignment, I start in on my math methods PCCI. A typical PCCI consists of reading a section or two of the textbook (written by our professor) and completing a short practice problem or so-called discovery exercise. Depending on the week, I either start in on my reading assignment for my computer systems class or logic class. At 4:00, I have my weekly one-on-one meeting with my supervisor for my ResLife job. Following the meeting, I relax by listening to music or an audiobook. At 5:00, I order, pick up, and eat my dinner. After dinner, I complete any remaining readings for my computer systems and logic classes. If I haven’t yet completed my lab assignment or have an exam the following day, I devote some of the night to circuits. Otherwise, I may work on a computer systems project or theory of computation assignment. 
Tuesday:
Tuesday’s are my busiest day of the week in terms of class hours. With that said, it’s nothing compared to my Thursdays last fall. I start Tuesdays off with my circuits class. During class, we learn new circuit theory and circuit analysis techniques. We also go through example problems. While we often run out of time to fully work through the extra practice problems in breakout rooms, fortunately, my professor posts videos going over those problems. After taking our feedback into account, we now get a break partway through the class. Each lecture covers a lot of material, so the brain/screen break is much appreciated. To check in on how the class is feeling about various concepts, our professor has us use the annotation feature on a scale from totally get it to totally lost. 
After circuits is my 20-minute break followed by my theory of computation lecture. The theoretical nature of the material means that it really is a lecture. While we obviously go through examples, there aren’t really practice problems as there would be in a math class. We use the chat to some extent in all of my classes, but to a greater degree in this course. Next up is lunch and a COVID test. At 1:40 I am back to circuits for the lab. Most of the labs are virtual with physical lab equipment, but a few have been in-person so that we could use special equipment. Ironically, one of our in-person labs was actually fully virtual in terms of lab equipment. (We were sitting on the lawn outside of Ford together and running circuit simulators on our laptops). Fortunately, we don’t usually need to stay until 4:30. I tend to just collect my data, ask some questions about the material, and then finish up the write-up at a later point in time. This time block is also the one used whenever we have an exam. 
I always start by doing the textbook reading for circuits. I don’t read super closely, but it’s still a good primer for the next class. In terms of other work, Tuesdays are a bit more unpredictable and really depend on how much I got done over the weekend. Specifically, while I usually finish my math methods assignment over the weekend, occasionally I need to finish it up on Tuesday evenings. Likewise, for circuits, I sometimes finish the last few problems on a Tuesday evening. At 7:00, I have a staff meeting with the other community advisors in my neighborhood and our supervisor. Our meetings usually take place over Zoom, but our most recent one was in-person with ice cream from Herrell’s which was a lot of fun. In weeks where I haven’t yet started my computer systems work, I do what I would usually have done on a Monday on a Tuesday.

Wednesday:
Wednesdays are similar to Mondays without the computer systems lab and ResLife meeting. In the afternoon I often attend office hours for my theory of computation class to ask questions about the weekly assignment. Even though I don’t have my logic class until the following Monday, I usually just do the reading on Wednesday afternoon. On Wednesday evenings, I typically work through my circuits revisions. I also tend to do a good chunk of my computer systems coursework. This consists of watching lecture videos, taking notes, and taking lesson quizzes. Furthermore, I have definitely spent some Wednesday evenings working through computer systems projects. 
Thursday:
Thursdays are like Tuesdays without the circuits lab. Even though I have the whole afternoon free, unfortunately, I am sometimes having to finish up my theory of computation assignment. It’s also common for me to start working on the new math methods problem set. In the case of this Thursday, I played some guitar and then started writing this post. I also do my circuits reading for Tuesday and take the quick lab quiz. If I have any remaining computer systems coursework, I do that as well.  
Friday:
This semester I only have one class on Fridays, math methods. After class, I get a COVID test and an early lunch. I know it seems crazy how many free afternoons I have given that I am taking 22 credits and am a double STEM major. However, part of this is explained by my UMass computer systems course being asynchronous and the fact that I completed the one-credit companion course in C programming before my Smith semester started. My computer systems class was originally scheduled to meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Even though I wish the class was synchronous, the flexibility of an asynchronous class has been much appreciated. Furthermore, the class was in a terrible time block that would have caused me to miss most of house tea. Back to what a Friday afternoon looks like! After completing my PCCI for math methods, I often rewatch the lecture videos for computer systems (on double speed) and then take the weekly quiz. I next pick up tea snacks from Cutter-Z and attend house tea at 4:30. After tea, I order dinner and often eat it in the living room with housemates. Fridays are definitely my least productive day and I have definitely taken a few weekly quizzes on Saturday after having planned to take them on Friday. Instead of doing real work, I often spend Friday afternoons writing blog posts. As for this post, I wrote most of it yesterday but spent a good chunk of Friday afternoon on it as well. 
Saturday:
Despite my best efforts to have a consistent sleep schedule, I often sleep in on Saturdays until 10:00. I then have a leisurely hour or so of listening to an audiobook. At 11:00, I get an early lunch. As mentioned in the Friday description, I sometimes end up taking my weekly quiz for computer systems on Saturday. When I have tests in math methods, I typically take them on Saturday night. (The tests are timed but are self-scheduled over the given weekend which includes Friday). When there is not a math test, I often work on my math problem set in the afternoon. Every few weeks, I host POCheese at 4:00. This week we are actually going to be meeting at 5:00 for a ramen night! At 6:00 I have a uke club meeting over Zoom. In weeks where I have already finished my math problem set and don’t have a test, I start in on my circuits problem set.
Sunday:
Sundays start like Saturdays in that I often have a leisurely morning. At 11:00 I get a COVID test and an early lunch. Sundays are almost always devoted to my circuits. This includes working through the problems set, the lab writeup, or studying for an upcoming exam. If my Saturday wasn’t as productive as intended, I do the homework described in that section. At 6:00 I have a Society of Women Engineers (SWE) board meeting. At 7:00, I either lead a community meeting (part of my ResLife job) or attend house council. Afterward, I fill out my weekly report (also part of my ResLife job).

Anahera reads over the text several times, exits the text messaging app, reopens it and still shocks finds her when the text does not disappear. Halloween party on Saturday, 8pm You’re invited. Costume contest too! This isn’t a text message that she should’ve gotten--Anahera played on the school’s field hockey team but she wasn’t that popular to get a text message from Chelsea. Chelsea was on the school’s cheerleading team, up next for captain once the current senior graduated. They worked together once on a physics project and exchanged numbers only to talk about who would do what and to meet after school to run the lab. But that was pretty much the existent of their interactions, besides saying hi in passing in the hallways. 
But here Chelsea was texting Anahera about a Halloween party. Looking up from her phone, Anahera risks a quick glance to her father. He stands outside the car, phone pressed to his ear. A call came in right as Anahera walked up to the car. He paused long enough to greet her and ask how she was doing but he had to return to the call pretty quickly after that. Her practice ran long--mostly because their coach was getting on their case about two girls that got into a physical fight in school and thus were benched for two games. Her dad’s not the type to be overly strict about her going out. But he was a small bit of a worrier and liked to know the parents or at least have their numbers. 
Anahera turns back to her phone and pulled up Levi’s thread. Did you get an invite to a Halloween party on Saturday?
It’s only a couple of moments before Levi replies. Yeah. ‘rents already said yes. What about you?
Levi was the last child in a line of four, so it was never really a shock that their parents let them do pretty much anything as long as they could say who they were going with and what time they were going to be back home by. Anahera glances back out to the window and notices Calum nodding along to whatever is being said. When they catch eyes, Calum puffs up his cheeks and crosses his eyes just to get a laugh out of her. Anahera shakes her head with a small chuckle and sticks her tongue out in return before returning to her phone. 
Haven’t asked yet. Afraid he’s going to say no. 
Your dad’s not like that. Let him know you’re going with me. My curfew is midnight. Dan’s on dial too--just in case. 
Dan was nice, and even though he was the oldest of their siblings, he wasn’t big on partying. He was quiet, played video games mostly and occasionally went out. But as the only one with a car, he became the go to one for rides to and from places or as a quick line of defense. Anahera normally had a curfew around eleven. However, if she led the question with Levi’s plans and Dan being their ride, then her dad might be more flexible about extending the curfew. Anahera would also have to promise that her homework would be done Friday night because if she didn’t, Calum would certainly use that as a way to be hesitant. 
The only way to find out her answer is going to be just asking flat out. Leaning across the console, Anahera rolls down the window. The buzzing and whir catches Calum’s attention and he takes the phone from his ear. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’ll be off in five and get you some dinner. I know you’re probably starving after practice.”
“Thanks. Um, actually I wanted to ask you if I could go to this party on Saturday. It’s at Chelsea’s. Levi’s going and they have to be back home by 12.”
“Halloween party?” Calum asks. 
Anahear nods. “I’ll have all my homework done on Friday. I’m already done with one essay and I think there’s a math set packet Mr. M is handing out on Thursday to help as extra study material for the test on Monday. And Bee’s already reading over my college essay so when I get the edits it’ll be like super quick.”
Calum sighs, hearing the voice on the line droning on. “Levi’s going? And their parents know Chelsea’s parents or have their number?”
“I-I don’t know. I just know Levi got the approval to go. Please, Dad. I can ask Chelsea tomorrow about the number thing. But please can I go? Dan’s on speed dial in case we need a ride.”
Calum holds her gaze, mouth twisting up. Bee had asked what Calum and Anahera had planned to do for Halloween. Normally, the two of them dressed up and handed out candy to the kids in the neighborhood that came by trick or treating on the day of Halloween and during the weekends, sometimes they went to haunted houses or Anahera hung out with Levi in her room, watching scary movies until ungodly hours in the morning. Anahera’s eagerness to go the party didn’t strick Calum was strange. She’s settled into her junior year, her birthday passing in September. However, Calum did start to miss things from before. Like the way Anahera always wanted to hang out with him and how they always had plans for Halloween. But things were changing. She was growing up and Calum was going to have to grow with that too. 
He nods. “Yeah, you can go. But,” he starts interrupting the squeal from Anahera, “the edits your college admission essay need to be done before you leave on Saturday. You’re not struggling in math too much, and I trust you with whatever you need to make sure you get a good grade on that test on Monday.” Anahera wants to apply early decision to a couple schools and the rest are regular decisions. Bee advised that it would be easier for her to finish the essays early and that way the only thing to stress about come the summer and start of senior year were getting the letters of recommendations. Though the essays that Anahera were drafting for college apps right now were samples/examples. Anahera wanted to have a bank of a couple different kinds that wouldn’t need too much extra work to fit to the questions before being submitted. 
Though Calum suggested that she not worry that not much closer until time, Anahera insisted that she wanted some practice and considering that the beginning of the semester wasn’t that congested with work, it worked out well. 
“Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Anahera exclaims crawling over the console and hugging Calum through the open window of the car. 
“You’re welcome, sweetheart. Love you.” He knows he’s clinging a little too long but he doesn’t want to forget the way Anahera squeezed in her hugs. It was a trait she had since she was little and Calum’s not sure where she got it from. However, there was nothing like a hug from her--even when she was small and she sensed something was wrong, she would run up to him with her favorite toy at the time in her hand and squeeze him tight in a hug. She would always tell him not to be sad because she would always have hugs for him. 
“Love you too!” Anahera replies easily. 
Calum gets off the work call soon after that and climbs into the driver seat, or at least he attempts to. Anahera hasn’t left the driver side seat since getting the okay for her venture to the party. “Ma’am. I know you’re getting closer to that license but I think I’m still in charge of driving for just a little bit longer.”
Anahera laughs. “Oh c’mon, Pops. You know I can handle this no problem.” She over dramatizes taking a sharp turn, hands passing over each other and lightly brushing the cover of the steering wheel. She hasn’t tested yet but they get out early on the weekends for practice and Calum keeps encouraging her to test. It’s yet to happen, but he’s hopeful. 
“Maybe on Sunday you go for a spin. But it ain’t Sunday yet.”
Anahera looks to Calum with her brows raised. “Promise?”
“Promise.” They hook pinkies and she climbs back into the passenger seat. “Subs?”
“Oh, you know exactly what I was thinking. But that might just be that you’re my dad.”
“Maybe,” Calum laughs, “maybe.” 
Anahera relays the news to Levi about her approval to go to the party. Any costume ideas? I’m a giant nothing. Levi asks. Anahera thinks about usual superheroes, the sexy costumes. But those wouldn’t work out too well. 
Couples costumes? Or too lame? 
I love you, Ana. But I am not going in some dumb het. normative costume. 
Anahera snickers at the text. I didn’t mean like couple couple costume. But like matching/same universe or something. 
Oh, oh, hmm, that could work.
Stranger Things--Scoops Ahoy Steve and Robin? That message comes through at the same time that Levi suggest pirates. Oh, pirates could be cool? We’d have to get to the mall to shop possibly. but I promised to have homework done before Friday. 
“Wanna eat inside or get it to go?” 
Ana looks up and sees that the car is parked outside their favorite Italian place. Anahera shrugs and unbuckles. “It’s everyone else’s problem if I stink, not mine.”
Calum laughs. “That’s why there was the option to not kill everyone with your funk.” He locks the doors, taking a quick glance at the parking lot. He doesn’t spot Bee’s car. He know she doesn’t take too many hours at the restaurant during the week, but occasionally she takes a few or she comes in when they need more help. He wasn’t sure if she was working both jobs or not. But given the number of cars in the parking lot, he can’t really get a good look around. 
Inside is crowded. Though most people seem to be getting orders to go, lined up at the counter as compared to the pretty empty dining area. Calum and Anahera stand the podium to be seated for a couple moments. Anahera is buried in her phone while Calum glances around. He spies Bee at the counter, handing over a stack of three pizza boxes to a man. The woman he’s with comes up and takes the bag Bee hands over. “Just two?” a voice close by cuts in. A younger guy who Calum hasn’t seen before stands in front of them. 
Calum turns with a nod. “Yes, just two.”
“Booth or table?” the young man asks. 
“Booth,” Anahera returns with a smile and follows behind as they’re escorted to the booth. Calum throws one last glance back to the counter. Bee happens to glance up and throws a small wave which Calum returns. 
“Can I start you all out with something to drink?” the young man asks, pen in hand. 
“Water,” Calum answers, slipping the sunglasses up into his hair and Anahera replies with the same. 
The young man nods. “Lemon on the side okay?” With nods all the way around, he starts over to the drink mission. 
Anahera turns directly to the sub and sandwiches section of the menu. “See your boo,” Ana teases glancing up for a moment. 
Calum shakes his head, cheeks heating for a split second at the tease. He and Bee have been dating for a little seven months. Anahera wasn’t shocked after discovering the hickies that fated day but she never fails to say that she’s the thing that brought them together.  “Yeah, I saw her,” Calum returns. “So about this party? You and Levi know what your costumes are going to be? Like going in something matching or separate?”
“We’re thinking about something matching. They suggested pirates or something but I don’t think I have anything in my closet that could work and I would ask to go shopping on Saturday before the party but I wasn’t sure how that was going to go over.”
“Hmm, if you needed to borrow anything from me, you could. Or if Levi wanted too, they could as well. And it comes down too, I could take y’all Friday after school.That would give you Saturday morning to work too and then get ready. Or whatever works better.”
“Thanks, Dad. I’ll let them know.” Anahera works her fingers over the screen, the keys highlighting for a second before dropping back down to their normal size. “And thanks. For offering to take Levi and offering your closet.”
Calum knows Levi’s parents haven’t super well to their coming out and using they/them pronouns. However, Levi’s siblings have defended them and Anahera too. He wishes he could do a lot more. He’s tried to help as much as he can, being there for Levi when they need someone but he knows it’s not always the same--it’s not like having their actual parents being supportive. “Of course. You two have been friends since elementary school. Almost feels like a second child at this point--Levi’s family at this point.”
“You’re pretty awesome, Dad.”
“I can only ever do my best, sweetheart. That’s it.”
“Yeah, but your best is still pretty great.” She’s quick to return to her phone no doubt relaying everything to Levi. The waiter returns with their waters and runs down the specials for the day. Anahera orders her turkey panini with salad and fries. Calum overs the Philly cheese steak with just fries. 
“Hey guys,” Bee says as she stops by their table. The dinner rush has slowed for the time being. 
Calum tugs on her wrist and she falls into the side of the booth, his bumping against his side. His arm slides around her waist in a quick hug. ���Shocked to see you here. Not even a Thursday, so you can’t tell me close to the weekend.”
“Terence’s books were more expensive this semester--so I’m trying to play catch up right now.”
“More expensive?” Calum questions, twisting in the booth to look up at her. Bee gives Anahera a quick hug before turning to stand at the edge of the table. “Why don’t you sit?”
“Boss is here today. Don’t want him complaining. And Terence signed up for an extra class, said he was going to be a class short if he didn’t fully load up his schedule. And it’s cheaper to do it now than it is to take the one class during the summer. I budgeted for right around 250 for books but the extra class was in English and it ran just under an additional 200 dollars just for that class.”
“Another 200 hundred?” Calum gaps. “You’re telling me you spent over 400 dollars in textbooks?”
“Just about 400 dollars. He’s looking for scholarships to help with textbooks. But with basketball it’s not like he can pick up a job. I need him focusing on his grade to keep the scholarship that he does have. The refund should help recover costs some but most of that I’m giving right back to Terence in installments.” 
Calum nods, knowing about how Bee likes to put money into Terrence’s account. She does it so that Terrence can take care of anything that comes up in case of emergency, but she know sometimes the team goes out for dinners and other things. He’s got to be a kid in college while still in college. What Calum didn’t realize is just how much Terrence didn’t know about what Bee did behind the scenes for him. Terrence came home for the summer, well before summer conditioning and they hung out, and Terrence knew Bee worked her ass off to help him but she hadn’t pulled the veil back to reveal just how much she busted ass to make his games, keep him afloat and never stressing about money. 
Calum respected that and never discussed money in front of Terrence. But part of him did want Terrence to know just how much Bee was working so that textbooks were the least of his worries. “You know I’m here, for anything,” Calum offers, wrapping his fingers around hers. 
Bee nods. “Thanks. I appreciate it. But get ready, you’re next,” she teases, laughing before glancing over to Anahera. “Once I get home I can send you my suggestions. They’re on my laptop and I didn’t bring it with me to this job.”
“Don’t worry, Bee. I appreciate you just taking the time to read over it.”
“Of course.” The bell above the door chimes and Bee turns, greeting the family that just entered letting them know she’ll be right over in a moment. “Alright, duty calls. Enjoy your dinner.”
Bee squeezes Calum’s hand and then turns on her heels to go to the podium. “How are we tonight? Besides just a smidge hungry?” Bee jokes, grabbing menus. The group laughs just a little bit before following Bee to a booth about three down from Calum and Anahera. 
“You think Bee would take me and Levi shopping?”
Calum perks up at the question. Anahera and Bee get along well but Bee’s careful about suggesting that she and Anahera spend time together. As Calum knows and understands, Bee doesn’t want to come across as being pushing or trying too hard but she doesn’t want to seem like she doesn’t care. They’ve gotten manicures together or gone out just for ice cream--it’s always been small things. However, Anahera seems to enjoy that time together. 
“Ask, can’t hurt. If her schedule allows, I think she’d be happy to take you and Levi,” Calum answers. He bites down on the corner of his lip to contain a small portion of his smile. Bee’s been the one to schedule most of their activities together or at least initiate them. But seeing Anahera take the lead on this one is a good sign. 
“Oh, you’re right. She might be working. I don’t want to make her feel bad if she’s working?” Anahera enjoys the time she’s spent with Bee. When they got the gel manicures, it was fun. Bee picked out Anahera’s color and they were able to sit next to each other as they talked about watching True Crime documentaries and Ana told her all about the new music she had been listening too. Bee was cool about all the jokes Anahera made, and once their colors cured under the UV lights, Anahera spent nearly thirty minutes sitting outside the shop just showing Bee all the videos and memes that she had saved recently. 
Bee felt like her dad’s girlfriend, but she also felt like someone that cared about Anahera too. It was a nice feeling to have another girl to talk about things that just got it. And whatever Anahera didn’t want to go back to Calum, didn’t get back to him. Anahera mentioned to Bee before Calum about Levi and what was happening at home for them. Anahera begged Bee not to say anything to her dad. Not that she thought Calum wouldn’t be understanding but because Anahera just didn’t want to out her best friend to someone they weren’t ready to be out too. However,  when Anahera needed someone to talk to about Levi, Bee was gracious and patient and promised not to breathe a word to Calum. So when Levi came over for the first time to come out, while Bee and Calum were  fixing dinner, Bee’s reaction was like she had heard the news for the first time. Calum was shocked but grateful to know and the change was immediate, though a little bumpy at first. Anahera called Bee later that night to thank her for being supportive of her best friend. 
Also in terms of pirate costuming, as much as Anahera adores her dad, she knew only Bee would get her vision for her costume and be able to help her. Also Bee could also help Levi put together their costume so that the two of them matched but still kept a distinct air to the both of them.
Bee passes their table right after they get their orders with a tray full of drinks for the table that she has. However on the second pass by, Anahera manages to snag her attention. “Do you work Saturday morning?”
Bee ponders for a moment. “I work here starting at 2. What’s up?”
“I got invited to this Halloween party and Levi and I want to go as pirates. But we both need a few things to help with our outfits. Would you mind taking us and helping us out?”
The grin that breaks across Bee’s face is so big Calum’s sure her cheeks are going to split right there on the spot. “Yeah, I’d love to. Mall opens at 9. How does 10 sound? Would that time work for them as well?”
“I can ask.”
“Text me whatever works best, okay. I’ll pick you up first and then we’ll swing and get Levi.”
Anahera nods and turns back to her salad just as Bee turns back and continues down to the kitchen. “So I’m getting the boot I guess.”
“I guess you can come too. Do you and Bee have plans?”
“Bee asked if we had plans. I told her our normal plans are using dressing up and doing a little decorating to hand out candy or you watching movies with Levi but now that’s different. So I’m not even sure.”
“Just remember, I’m coming back home at midnight sharp.” Once or twice, Anahera’s caught the embarrassing glimpse of a kiss getting pretty heavy. That’s enough, she doesn’t want to see anything more than that. 
Calum gapes for a moment around the sip of his water. “Missy, who’s the parent here?” Anahera goes quiet, shoveling the last bite of her salad into her mouth. “That’s what I thought.” With their dinner finish and check paid, Calum and Anahera slip out from the booth. They both say goodbye to Bee before leaving. Anahera promises to text Bee the second she gets a time that works well before 2. 
It’s only later in the night, after Calum gets a text from Bee that she got home safely that he calls her. She doesn’t answer immediately. However about 20 minutes later, his phone rings from her. “Hey,” he says settling into the pillows. Tammy’s curled up on his lap. The click of paws outside the door alerts Calum that Anahera’s moving around the house and Jake’s following right behind her. “How was your day?”
“Pretty good. The restaurant was crazy when I walked in but the rest of the night calmed down. How was your day?”
“Nothing too grand until I surprisingly ran into you,” he chuckles softly into the receiver. “I just want to say thank you for agreeing to take Anahera and Levi shopping. That-that means a lot to me.”
“No need to thank you, Cal baby. But you’re so welcome. I love Ana and Levi. I’d do whatever I could for them.”
“No, I do need to thank you. I know you’re working hard to cover what you had to spend on Terrence’s books but you taking the time to spend with my daughter and her best friend--it says a lot more about your character than anything.”
“Thank you, Calum. That means a lot.”
“Of course.”
“With Anahera and Levi going to the party, are you just going to hang out on Halloween?”
“I guess. I don’t know. Unless of course you’d like to spend some time together after work if you’re not too tired of course.”
“I’m only working a 5 hours shift. I picked up part of someone else’s shift. So if you wanted to do something after 7, we can. Your neighborhood’s plenty active right? Like you hand out candy and what not?”
“Yeah, there’s enough kids that come out. Would you want to dress up? I totally get if you don’t want to, with work and everything.”
“I would love to dress up! Halloween’s my favorite. But once Terrence got too old to trick-or-treat, I kinda didn’t have much reason to do a lot. The apartment complex does like a small thing for the kids, but nothing like the neighborhood I was in before Terrence and I moved.”
“Might I crash the shopping party on Saturday? I know depending on how long it takes you might have to duck out before things finish but while they shop for their costumes you and I can plan something too.”
“Sure, you can crash the shopping party. Do you decorate?”
“Used to when Anahera was younger. Not a lot much inside. It’s more outside decoration for the kiddos as they come up to the door.”
“Well I look forward to a fairly spooped out house. Trick or treating starts around 6 so I’ll miss the first hour but after my shift ends, would it be okay if I just came directly to your place and changed? What time is the party for Anahera and Levi?”
“Yeah, sure you can come straight to my place. Their party starts at 8 and Levi’s brother Dan is dropping them off at the party and dropping them Ana back off afterwards. Or at least I need to make sure that’s the plan. Even if I have to drop her off, if you come to my place, trick or treaters can still get their candy fill while I drop her off.”
“Okay, cool. Thank you.” A yawn cuts off the last little bit of the sentence. “God, sorry.”
“It’s been a long day. I get it. Get some rest, babe.”
“Wait, I gotta email Anahera. Stay on the line with me until I finish that. Then I can go night-night.”
Calum chuckles at the repetitive phrase. It reminds of when Anahera was younger. He’t tuck her in at night with a kiss to her forehead and a sweet bid of “Night-night. Sweet dreams,” without fail. And it appears that even though children might grow out of the phrase, parents never do. “Okay, I’ll stay on until you do that. Do you have any costume ideas?”
“Something witchy. Or vampires. Or we can go with something with a bit more gore. I think I have some special effects makeup left in that kit.”
“I know you said Halloween is for favorite but for someone that doesn’t celebrate like before, I’m a little lost on why you have a kit.”
“Library holds some special readings every quarter. Theme was fairytales so we dressed up and used some special effects for some wrinkles for the old fairy godmother. And I just got the big kit because I figured it would last for more than reading. There’s some fake blood in it too. I like to have all my options.”
Calum hums, the pillows surrounding him starting to pull him into sleep as well. Just closing his eyes won’t hurt. It’s quiet for a moment, faintly he can hear the taps and clicks of Bee on her computer. “Oh, what about something with Bonnie and Clyde?”
“Like them dead? Because I think I could be down.” The sentence is a little slow to fall from Bee’s lips. 
“Hmm yeah maybe.”
“Thanks for staying up with me even though we both about to pass out.”
“Anything for you.”
“Goodnight, Calum.”
“Hey, that’s a good night-night and sweet dreams to you, Bee.” She laughs softly into the receiver and it’s the only sound Calum distinctly remembers hearing too. 
Friday night Anahera is sure to show Calum her changes to the essay and when he nods, kissing the top of her head, Ana tries to hold back her excitement. She and Levi have talked about their costumes. Though Levi’s unsure of if they should go with a vest or not. They don’t have one and buying one would be pointless just for the one costume. Anahera suggests if they find one cheap they could add it to the costume without fear of not necessarily wearing it out again. 
Calum agrees to drive separately from Bee, Anahera, and Levi when Saturday rolls around. The second Bee showed up Anahera dove into the vision she and Levi had for the costumes and what they both already have in their closest. Calum catches wind of a skirt and he waits for a moment unsure if that’s a smart idea. However, Bee is quick to suggest fishnets in addition to the skirt. Fishnets isn’t the answer he would’ve given, but Calum knows this is not his time into the court and let’s Bee take the lead on how to best handle wearing a skirt to a party that Calum’s almost certain alcohol may sneak its way into the mix. He knows he can’t shield Anahera forever from the world but he definitely doesn’t want her introduction to be harsh. Amongst the glimpses of conversations that he catches about the skirt, he catches onto the addition of shorts underneath too and lets out a tiny sigh of relief. 
Levi hangs back as Bee and Anahera enter the first store. Calum lingers back with them.“Skipping this one?” Calum asks. It’s an H&M and there’s no doubt in Calum’s mind that they can find something here. They mentioned wanting either a jacket or the vest and then needing a thick belt or fabric to help with their look. They already have the white button up, jeans and boots for the costume. 
“I-It’s a lot easier to like look online at clothes.” The confession leaves Levi’s lips softly. Calum nods, understanding that online no one says anything if they switch between men or women’s. However, the physical stores has to be a whole different ballgame, the anxiety about looks that people might give tot hem. 
“If you want, I’ll stick with you. Whichever section, I can be right there.”
“You-you don’t have too, Mr. Hood.”
“It’s Uncle Cal and you know that, Levi. Besides, you’re not Anahera’s best friend. You’re part of my family. So whatever you need me to do is out of love, not obligation.”
The tears collect on their lower lids. “You consider me family?”
“Always have, kid, and always will.” With an arm slung over their shoulder, Calum proposes a deal. “What if you help me with my costume and if we just happen to find something for you, then we just happen to find something for you? How does that sound?”
Levi gives Calum a quick hug before nodding. “Sounds-sounds good to me.”
“C’mon. I think I see a suit jacket that might be perfect for Clyde. But I need younger eyes because I forgot my glasses.” 
As the pair walks towards the suit jackets, Bee slides over and slips a few tissues into the palm of Calum’s hand. He hands them over to Levi and there’s a silent nod of recognition between all of them. Bee zips back over to Anahera, knowing that she had to talk the young girl out of the platform boots that Anahera doesn’t need considering the pair that she just got for her birthday. 
As Calum and Levi thumb through the blazers, Calum can see one particular red ornate blazer has caught their attention. So he plucks if off the rack, pulling the medium size one off the rack to start. He can’t quite gauge their size and he doesn’t want to ask someone to measure Levi. Holding the jacket open for Levi, Calum silently asks them to try it on. “I think it might look better on you than me. I think my days have passed. Besides the red blazer I have at home reads more captain than pirate. But it’s always a look you could go for.”
Levi slips their arms into the blazer. The sleeves swallow their arms and hits them too low on their legs. But the light is evident in their eyes as they look into the mirror on the wall. “Wow,” they breathe, turning to see what it looks like from the back. 
“I say we try the small. This is a medium.” Levi nods, slipping out of the jacket and taking the small from Calum. “This isn’t a tailored cut. Meaning it doesn’t cut in or cinch at the waist. This is a standard fit.” He straightens the collar out for them and grins at their smile. “Arms out straight in front of you,” he directs looking to see if the sleeves come up just a little or not all. They rise just a smidge. “Okay, reach up for the ceiling.” Levi does so without seeming restricted. “Is it tight anywhere?”
“No,” they return, shrugging their shoulders. “Not tight. It’s a little loose but like a good loose.”
“Fitted jackets and blazers can be harder to get in smaller sizes sometimes. If you want this, we can get it today and then after the party to get fitted a bit better, go to a tailor.”
“My parents would not be happy though,” Levi counters. 
Calum nods. “I know that’s rough. But what if for right now, we get this and if they ask, you tell your parents it’s mine and I let you borrow it for the costume. The next time you come for to visit Anahera, I can take you to get it properly fitted.”
“How would I get it back home? My parents don’t like spot check my room but they’d notice me with this kind of jacket.”
“You leave that to me. While it’s easy to say smuggle it in your backpack, they’ll wrinkle it. But trust, between Anahera and I, we’ll make sure you get it to your room undetected.”
“I don’t know Mr. Hood. Seems like a lot of trouble.”
The nerves are understandable and Calum does not want to push them to do anything they wouldn’t want to do. “Alternatively, you find a vest for the costume and Bee and I find some fabric that’s fancy and you use that to tie around your waist as as the glamour you and Ana want. The blazer’s a dream for when you feel safer.”
“Yeah, yeah I like that.” Levi slowly removes the blazer and puts it back onto the hanger. “There’s, uh, there’s this,” they state, lifting up a standard black denim like vest. 
“Okay, so something along that vibe. Gotcha.” Calum thumbs through the rack and pulls out a similar vest but this one has silver buttons and embellishments that make it feel a bit more elevated, more pirate-y. 
As Levi tries that one on, Calum texts Bee to grab the red blazer from off the end of the rack and add it to the pile that Anahera’s collecting. He promises to pay her back. Within a minute of the text sending, he watches Bee approach in the mirror and grab the blazer, quickly stashing it under the racks in her hand. There’s a yellow sweater on top and a few black items beneath it as well. 
“Lookin’ good, Levi!” Bee calls out, leaning behind the racks to make sure the blazer is concealed. 
Anahera isn’t far behind, dragging Levi over to the shoes. “You should get this vest,” she says before returning to her point about not knowing which sneakers to get. 
“They didn’t go for the blazer? It looked good,” Bee ponders quietly. 
“Worried about their parents blowing a fuse. But Christmas is coming up, so hopefully things are different then. If not, I think they’d still appreciate it. And I know if I wait, it’s going to be gone.”
“You’re right about that. Ana and I are done for Halloween. You might have to convince her she doesn’t need 80 pairs of the same shoe. But while you distract, I’ll check out.”
Calum nods, heading towards the clearance shoes where Anahera and Levi are huddled. “I’ll give you the money tonight.” 
Bee nods and makes a straight shot for the registers. After a trip to the fabric store for Levi’s belt, and a dive into Bee’s favorite hair care store to get headwraps for the both of them, Anahera and Levi are set for their costumes. Calum knows buried in his closet is a white dress shirt that he can throw on along with a black suit jacket, so he’s not too worried that he’s walking out the store empty handed. 
Bee looks down at her phone again, teeth capturing the skin of her lips--her boss at the restaurant texted if she can come in an hour earlier. She almost doesn’t take the extra hour but Calum assures that now the costumes are set, that if she needs to take the extra hour then she absolutely take it. None of them will be mad, or feeling like she’s dipping out just to get away. “You sure?” Bee asks Calum after relaying the predicament, watching as Levi and Anahera duck in line for pretzels. “Ana’s not going to feel like I’m being mean or dodgy?”
“Babe. No. I don’t think so.” He kisses her forehead. “I know things are tight after the textbook fiasco. If you need to take the extra hour, do it.”
“I’ll keep the blazer in my bag and then bring it back to your place after they leave for the party.”
“Okay.” 
She gives her quick goodbyes with hugs to Anahera and Levi, before kissing Calum softly goodbye and backtracking to the opposite end of the mall, where they parked. The shopping continues for a little bit longer, but Calum doesn’t linger too much allowing them their space. They agree to reconvene outside the sporting goods store in an about hour. 
It’s a dangerous game to duck into one of the jewelry stores. Calum’s not even looking for himself and it sounds crazy and too soon for thoughts of a ring cross his mind. But he tells himself he can just browse, just fantasy about what that might be like. 
“Who you looking for?”
He turns to the voice and see Anahera saddled up beside him. “You two have another like half an hour to be free.”
“Not much else here,” she returns. “Looking for Bee? Is her birthday soon or something?”
“Just looking,” Calum returns with a shrug, trying not to draw too much suspicion. 
“Ana, look!” Levi calls out, waving their hand to beckon her closer. “It’s an anklet like you were looking at in the other store.”
Anahera ducks over, just to look. Soon they leave the mall. Levi asks if they can just get changed at Calum’s place which is an easy yes. Calum takes Anahera and Levi for a quick lunch before Levi grabs their costume, an overnight bag and their backpack from their house. Tammy and Jake run up from the depths of the house to greet all of them. The pets and scratches are happily received.  “So scary movies to pregame for the party tonight? What’s on the agenda?” Calum asks. 
“I should do the World History homework before the party,” Levi starts, laughing a little. 
“But we probably will watch scary movies,” Anahera finishes. 
“Go figure,” Calum agrees. “So what time should I pick you both up tonight? Or is Dan still your main man?”
“Dan said he’d pick us up from the party and just drop us off here. He said he was going to be out at that time anyway,” Levi relays. 
“He won’t be drinking?”
“Nah, Dan doesn’t drink. I think some friends of his are also throwing a party and he’s used to being the DD. He said it was something about a mixer? I don’t really know. But we’ll text him when we’re ready. Is midnight still okay?”
“Mixers are just different clubs, or whatever, getting together,” Anahera cuts in. “Girls field hockey has them with the guys division and other sports after school sometimes. I assume college mixers are way different than ones in the high school gym though.”
“Yeah, midnight is still fine,” Calum answers. 
Once they return to the house, it’s fairly silent. Anahera and Levi go into her room and Calum takes the moment to decorate the outside of the house. He started yesterday, mostly with the hanging decorations and the lights. Today’s mostly putting on the certain yard decorations. There are some tombstones that he stakes into the ground and a few giant fake spiders that he sets out. The decor was more extravagant in years prior. But knowing Bee will be stopping by means that the lazy decorating won’t cut it. 
With the outside done, Calum pulls down the bags of candy from the pantry and pour them into bowls. He’s sure to separate the chocolate from the non-chocolate stuff. He even has a separate bowl for any candies that are chocolate and have peanuts or other nuts in it knowing that some kids in the neighborhood may have allergies. A few parents put out an alert on the neighborhood watch app. There was a year, now as Calum recalls it must’ve been three years ago, where the majority of the houses had only chocolate candy making it impossible for one kid to get any candy that they could enjoy. Calum took the leftover non chocolate candy to the house after reading the heartbreaking plea from the parents. 
“What’s for dinner y’all?” Calum asks after both Ana and Levi resurface in the kitchen rummaging through the snack pantry. “We got about an hour before trick-or-treaters start showing up. Pizza? There’s leftovers too, but I think I’ll be nice and order something.” 
Both of them readily agree to pizza and Calum places the order without needing much more convincing. He’ll finish off the last of the spaghetti leftovers he fixed yesterday. The pizza will not last long between the two of them--never a shock anymore to Calum anymore. He changes first into his costume knowing it won’t be fully complete until Bee shows up from work however, he would rather be one half when kids start showing up. 
Though Calum slips into an older black suit. It’s somewhat of a shock that it still fits. But it’s a testament to the personal trainer for sure. Calum does make sure to include the hat. The curls don’t cooperate off the bat, requiring a little bit of assistance from some hair gel Anahera suggested to him to help. Finally, he gets the curls tamed enough to slip the hat on. His dress shoes click over the hard floor and it is echoed by Tammy and Jake finding him and walking behind him. 
“Uncle Cal did not come to play,” Levi jokes around a bite of pizza. 
“Dad, who even are you? I don’t know this man,” Anahera laughs. Calum does a spin and laughs as the two of them whistle. Soon Thriller comes over the speakers. No doubt Anahera pairing her phone to the speakers downstairs. “Show ‘em, Dad. Show ‘em how you groove.”
“Miss Bee’s gonna faint when she sees you like this. I want a video,” Levi laughs. 
“The old man’s still got it,” Calum returns and slides his fingers over the brim of the hat. The giggles are quick to subside after the song fades out. They toss out the pizza box and wash their plates before going back to Anahera’s room. 
“I’m stealing your dad’s wardrobe,” Levi says as they pass through the living room. “Taking notes.”
“Oh, don’t make his ego even better.” The two of them laugh and the door closes before anything else can be said. 
The first half hour of trick-or-treaters is a little slow and mostly toddlers or infants being carted around by their parents. However, Calum enjoys seeing the various pumpkin costumes on the babies as they walk up the driveway and porch. They don’t seem bothered by the night which he knows the parents are grateful for. Exactly at seven, his phone chimes and interrupts the Halloween Party playlist Calum turned on, playing on the speaker he normally uses for outdoor parties. 
I’m headed out now. It’s from Bee and he replies in acknowledgement before setting the phone back down and grabbing a couple handful of candies for the group of sheet ghosts that waddle up the driveway. “Trick or treat,” they chorus.
Calum laughs. “Well, this is a predicament.” He looks over their hands. “I can hear some trick-or-treaters but I don’t see them.” He looks over his yards, hand above his brow to emphasize the point. 
“Boo!” One child giggles. 
Calum jumps, finally looking  down at them. “Oh there they are.” The candle rustles in their bags as he drops off some for them and they reply with their thanks before going back to the parents waiting at the end of the driveway. 
“I scared him, Momma!” The kid cheers and the parents laugh, with a nod. “I’m so scary!”
“Oh I know. The scariest,” the mother returns. They move down to the next house. Another fifteen minutes later, Calum notices headlights slowing down and turning into the driveway. Bee continues up and pulls right up to the garage door. 
“Oh my god,” she gapes walking up on the porch. “Look at you.” Calum greets her with a hug and a kiss to her cheek. “By God, you look sharper than Sunday morning.”
The heat in his cheeks only increases. “Thanks. But I’m missing my other half.”
“Flattery will get you nowhere,” Bee teases, kissing him softly. 
“I think it’ll get me plenty-where.”
“Be back in two shakes and a twist.” Calum nods, watching as Bee walks into the house. More children come up to the house. He drops off candy to some Cookie Monsters, witches, Captain America’s, and Spiderman’s. Ten minutes later, the front door opens and there are only a couple clicks of the heels. When Calum looks up, he nearly loses his breath. The sweater and skirt are fitted to her figure, hinting to what he’s always known is there, has witnessed more than once, but she keeps it hidden under jeans or skirts at work. Not that he’s upset about that, it all makes sense. He just wishes she showed it off a little bit more. The little beret and scarf really complete the look. 
It’s Calum’s turn to be gobsmacked. “Holy shit, you look great.”
“Thanks. I’ve been told to remind you that the party starts in about ten minutes. And they’ll come to the front porch once they’re ready. I got stopped in the hallway,” Bee laughs, sitting in the seat next to Calum. 
“Noted.”  
Another group of children approaches, this time a group dressed in various costumes from Winnie the Pooh. One girl is Eeyore, there’s a Pooh, Tigger, and Piglet. The parents are dressed as Owl and Rabbit. “Twick oh tweet,” the one dressed as Tigger says quietly a shy smile on their face. 
Bee gasps, chest clenching at the matching costumes. Terrence and his friends would do something similar, group costumes. His group costumes weren’t as cute as Winnie the Pooh but still memories come flooding back of superhero costume debates.  God, sometimes she wishes she could make Terrence small again, cherish the moments where all he wanted to do was be up under her as she cooked or cleaned. It all just happens too fast. 
Bee drops some candy into their buckets. “It’s the whole 100 Acre Woods. I won’t tell Christopher Robin that guys you dropped by.”
The kids laugh and say their thanks. “I miss dressing babies up,” Calum confesses. “Anahera and I used to always do matching outfits and she was so happy to bounce up to houses.”
“Terrence would go as athletics or power rangers. I wish my complex did more. I miss the decorating and having to hide the candy from Terrence.”
“High up in cabinets,” Calum laugh. 
“He got too tall for that and too crafty. Hide it in my drawers. He didn’t mess too much in my room.”
Calum chuckles. “Smart. Did you hide Christmas presents in there too? Because I still struggle with that.”
Bee nods, watching more kids walk up and shouts “Trick-or-Treat!” The two of them drop off candy into their buckets and bags. “I leave it in the boxes, if I order online. With Terrence in college now, it’s easier now. Get crafty and hide it in the bathrooms.”
“Now that’s a thought.” 
A family comes up, dressed up in leather and bling. “Oh, we got some rockstars,” Bee teases, nudging Calum. 
The little girl is dressed in her leather jacket and her brother is in a jacket that matches and it melts his heart. Calum tries not to show it, tries not to gush too much at the costumes but they are adorable. He sneaks them a few extra pieces of candy. “Keep on rockin’ out,” he grins at them. 
They smile in return, “Thank you!” in their excited squeals leaving both of them. 
Calum clutches his chest as they leave and Bee laughs,  “Don’t die on me. You gotta survive.” 
“We did that one year,” he sighs, finally sitting up in the chair. “Anahera wanted to go as me and I bought her this silver blazer. I’ll show you the pictures.”
“Oh, that’s precious. I can’t wait to see them.”
The trick-or-treaters slow down and Calum knows the end is nearing for them. Things usually end right about 8 in the neighborhood, though the general unspoken rule it so linger until about 8:30 just to catch all those that might’ve gotten a later start. But he and Bee stay out on the porch. She stacks the empty buckets and sneaks an Almond Joy for herself. “The decorations look good. And I just realized we completely forgot the fake blood.”
Calum shrugs, grabbing a small Snickers. “It’s alright. Most of the parents got it regardless.” They received a few compliments throughout the night but not too many. Most of the time the older kids walked up by themselves but when parents did shadow behind, they were quick to gush at the couple’s costumes. 
Anahera and Levi pop out onto the porch a little while later and Calum excuses himself to drop them off. Though, Bee snaps some photos for them and Anahera returns the favor by taking some photos of Bee and Calum together. The teases from the two are more than enough even when they don’t attempt to pose Bee and Calum in the standard high school prom pose. Calum and Bee go along with it mostly for the laughs. 
Bee starts to clean up in Calum’s absence and puts things inside the house. By the time she starts to wrestle with the speaker, Calum’s returned and helps her get it back inside. She ducks back to her car to grab the blazer for Levi and takes it from the bag so it can straighten as much as it can. Calum’s quick to hang it up to help as well. “Do you work in the morning?” Calum asks, pulling the hat from his head as he reenters the living room from the back of the house where his bedroom is located. 
“At the library, yeah. But I can hang for another hour or two. Unless of course I pass the fuck out.”
“I know that feeling. You hungry?”
Bee follows behind into the kitchen, her own beret and scarf removed as well. “I ate at work, but thanks.” She leans into the counter, eying the box of popcorn that seems to have been left out. Popcorn does sound good. She knows she shouldn’t. But just a little wouldn't hurt as they watch a movie. Sneakily, she pushes the box closer to Calum. 
He giggles, noticing the green box moving closer to him. “So I’m going to assume you want popcorn.”
“Please?”
Calum nods, waving for her to come closer. She steps in close, resting against his chest. The microwaves beeps before whirring. Calum kisses the top of her head, wrapping his arms around her waist. “The hottest Bonnie to walk this Earth.”
Bee laughs, kissing along his jawline. “Thank you. I think you cleaned up well as Clyde. Almost cut me looking so sharp in this suit.”
They share a kiss and the beeps of the microwave interrupts them. “What’s on the movie menu tonight?” Calum asks, bumping the bag into a bowl. Bee’s not in love with horror films but can generally stomach more gore than straight up horror. Rather than dominating the conversation with suggestions, Calum lets her take charge. However, they settle on whatever is playing on the TV, after a good twenty minutes of failed decision making. Bee snuggles into his side, a blanket wrapped about the both of them. 
“Where’s the picture of Anahera dressed up as you?” Bee asks during a commercial break. “I need to see this.”
Calum stretches forward to grab his phone and scrolls for the photo. “So this is the look she wanted to recreate,” he says showing her a picture of himself from so long along Calum’s shocked that he remembers it was actually him. But the picture of him in the silver jacket on stage instills a lot of memories. 
“Oh look at you! How old were you in this photo?”
“Twenty-two, twenty-three. It feels like a lifetime ago. But,” he starts swiping through the pictures again and pulls up the one of them side by side, rocking the glittery blazer and slicked back hair. “Here’s my little girl matching her old man.”
“God, she looks so much like you. It’s insane. But this is so cute.”
“Thanks. I will say if you think Anahera and I look alike, it’s a family trait.”
“So you look like your parents, huh? Like you got spit out.”
Calum nods. “Yeah. My mum’s the culprit. My sister and I look like she sculpted us personally. Also speaking of blazers, I still have to pay you back. How much was it again?”
The movie continues on around them as they settle the payment. Stories filter on about their children’s past successful or failed costumes. There are some stories about their exploits in their younger years. Kisses are shared, soft and languid. Some are sweeter due the candy they snuck during the night too. Hands slips under dress shirts or sweaters but Calum and Be don’t go too far. Just kisses and exhales and intoxicating themselves with the other. During a commercial break, Bee excuses herself to the bathroom and it’s only then that Calum realizes that it’s closing in around 11 pm.
Calum cleans up their mess of kernels and wrappers. When Bee returns she finds Calum in the kitchen, hugging him from behind. “I’m gonna head home to get some sleep.”
“No, don’t leave me,” he whines. 
“I know. I don’t wanna either. But out of respect, ya know. Can’t just be randomly spending the night.”
Calum kisses across her knuckles. “I appreciate it. Let me know when you get home safely okay.” 
“Will do.” Calum walks Bee to her car and kisses her goodnight before watching her pull down the driveway. Not even before he can get to the porch, another pair of headlights cuts through the night. He watches it pull up into this driveway and notices the tag--it’s Dan. 
Levi and Anahera step out of the car both of them giggling incessantly. “Oh fuck,” Ana says loudly upon seeing her dad. “Shit.”
Calum can already tell alcohol’s been involved. But there’s only amusement as both of them attempt to pass off like they’re sober. He takes Anahera while Dan helps Levi up the steps. “Seems like there was definitely been some fun tonight,” he teases, fixing both of them classes of water. 
“We won the costume contest!” Levi declares. “And maybe had a shot or two.”
“We got third,” Ana corrects. 
“Sstill placing.”
Calum tries his best not to laugh at their not sober antics. “Drink some water. Honestly, how many drinks?”
“Only like two, two and a half,” Ana confesses hiding behind the class. 
“It’s clear sweetheart, so I can still see you.” 
“Damn.” 
Levi laughs, slipping down into the cushions. The headscarf slips off their head with the action but they don’t seem to notice. “Are we screwed, Uncle Cal? I really really can’t afford to get into trouble.”
“We’ll wait to see if you’re screwed when you wake up tomorrow.  If you feel like ass in the morning, you’ll have to deal with that and there’s no reason for me to dish out any punishments.”
“If we don’t feel like ass?”
“The fear of getting caught coming home shamby from a paper is punishment enough,” Calum chuckles.
With a glass of water down each, he helps them to the room, mostly herding them from the walls to keep anyone from knocking their head on a picture frame. “Thanks, Dad,” Anahera sighs, leaning into the wall for a little bit of support. 
“There was a reason why most of your homework had to be done before the party,” he grins. “Holler if you need me, okay?”
Calum texts Bee about their return, safe but not sober. Damn, should’ve stuck around to witness that. Need an extra pair of hands? Bee replies. 
Seems like we’re all good. Thanks. 
Also please send me the photos of us from tonight? Whenever you can of course. I think if we had gone to a costume contest we would’ve won too.
Of course. Definitely would’ve won with a woman like you on my arm.  
Calum rises first the next morning, and doesn’t disturb them immediately. However, closer to late morning, he knocks softly on Anahera’s door. “Yeah?” Ana calls out and as he peeks inside he notices they’re still up. Levi is sitting on her bed and Ana at her desk. 
“Oh, thought you two might’ve died at some point in the night. Glad to see I was wrong.”
“We didn’t drink that much.”
Levi snorts. “I had to get you Advil.”
“Shut up,” Anahera huffs, dropping her head in her hands. “I’m okay, Dad. Really. I’m fine. Just like a minor headache that’s all.”
He shakes his head. “You’ll learn eventually. Pancakes on me this morning, how does that sound?”
“I’m down,” Levi answers. Their attention is locked on the screen. 
“I’ll let you know when food’s ready.” Calum states to the room and begins to shut the door but still can faintly catch Anahera asking Levi about the blazer. He leaves the door slightly ajar but walks back to his room the jacket hangs right where he left it. He wanted it to be a present, wanted to get it tailored. But he knows he can’t wait. Calum pulls it off the bar and shuffles back to Anahera’s room. Slipping his arm through, he hooks onto the knob on the inside and then closes the door. He waits for a moment. 
“No way! No fucking way!”
The door swings open, Levi gripping the hanger and shaking the garment. “You totally didn’t?” Their voice cracks just a little as the emotion rocks them visibly. 
“Maybe I did. Maybe I didn’t. But I mean you’re holding the jacket, so I’m pretty sure I did.”
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” they gush, tackling Calum into a hug. 
“Anytime, kid, anytime.” While Halloween’s typically celebrated and seen as a way to become and dress up like someone else, it doesn’t mean Levi doesn’t deserve the chance to dress like themself. “If you have to keep it over here, I get it. And I had anticipated waiting on giving it to you, but felt like now was a good time.”
They dance up and down the hallway with the suit jacket and Anahera laughs, recording their excitement. She’s careful not to post it on anything public. Her socks cause her to nearly slip and fall as she rounds the corner to the kitchen. Calum’s at the stove, flipping over pancakes when she hugs his side. “Thanks for being awesome. About the drinking and getting Levi that blazer. They love it.”
“The drinking’s one thing because you embarrassed yourself. The blazer--well I couldn’t not get it.”
“I know it’s because you’re amazing and awesome and like the best person to walk the planet, but it really does mean a lot.”
“Anytime, sweetheart. I’d do just about anything for you and Levi.”
“Only just about anything?”
“Hey, that’s still a long list and included on it is making the two of you pancakes so you two can study because there’s still school on Monday.”
“Oh don’t remind me,” she laughs, popping to kiss his cheek and then scurrying back around the corner of the kitchen. 
“That’s my job!” Calum shouts. 
“You do it well!”

“A Lesson In Tightropes” {1/5}
Hello everybody, this my first post on Tumblr. I written this story prior the release of Miraculous Ladybug season 4. A lot of things in this won’t match up to the current season. So think about it in a way of an AU story.

Part 1 : Balance
Balance.
Another important skill needed in this never ending circus that we call life. As that’s what it can be seen as a complex balancing act. From the moment that we learn to move or stand we are supposed to follow a straight line without a certain end. As time starts to build up things are shove into our hands to juggle from small things such cleaning your room, washing behind your ears and finishing the vegetables on your plate. To the attempts of finishing ten page papers for university, keeping your light bill paid, and scrimping enough money for this month’s rent. The round shiny pennies that you have been juggling had turned into round shiny porcelain plates. More fragile and easier to break while trying to walk the straight line of a tightrope. The crowd that’s watching is ready to boo at you for any misstep and misdeed that is done, like the entertainment that you are. While the crowd that is supporting you and your accomplishments seem small like they can barely make a sound, even when it becomes too much and you fall without a safety net.
Up above the colors of orange and yellow painted Paris’ sky as the sun rose one early spring Friday morning. Sunlight quickly took its reign warming the frosty air from the previous night. The few people that were already out during this early morning minding their business as most were returning home from a grueling night shift or leaving for the long early shift that the day would give them. But right above them was the city’s beloved heroine Ladybug swinging through the sky with her trusty yoyo. The bug tossed the yoyo to latch onto the rooftops ahead to prolong the cycle of rush and relief of her body being pushed through the sky by her own hands.
As she had only one solid thought on her mind: home.
The few people who would look above and see the heroine had a few names that come to mind: hero, protector, role model, icon and savior. With all the things that Hawkmoth had thrown at her she seemed unstoppable. However, those were the people who easily let themselves get lost in the sparkle. They couldn’t see or wanted to notice the sway back in the bug’s posture, the misshapen form as she swung or the hesitation between each jump as she hanged onto the yoyo’s wire for dear life.
As underneath the surface level, it was clear that the spirit of exhaustion had been clinging onto her.
Nevertheless, Ladybug couldn’t stop moving as she sprung forward from the rooftop of Collège Françoise DuPont to the balcony of the nearby bakery. Nearly missing her footing on the balcony’s railing, the bug then jumped forward into the balcony’s opened trap door landing onto her bed that was underneath the opening. She landed flat on her back letting the cushiony padding of the mattress break her fall.
“Tikki,” the heroine said groggily. “Spots off.”
Magical red dust surrounded her body peeling off her costume and reverting her back into her civilian clothes. Tikki landed on the bed’s pillow, eyes already shut the kwami letting out a small yawn. While Marinette’s eyelids felt heavy, she felt herself slipping into a deep slumber needed to recover from last night and all of the previous nights before. Ever since she had returned home from her trip from New York. There have been back to back akumas and sentimonsters that Ladybug and Chat Noir had to deal with for the past three weeks. All of them appeared during the dead of night. It was like this Hawkmoth’s revenge for them not letting him plunge the world into another world war.
It was akuma alert notification, the most recent of many.
She suited up like usual, leaving her home after midnight hoping that this wouldn’t take long as she still was exhausted from the previous night. But those hopes were for nothing as the villain Creature Feature took hours to defeat, leaving both her and Chat Noir dragging themselves home, exhausted. Marinette turned over, eyes now shut as the mattress cushioned her aching body as she tried to reach dreamland. However, as she started to drift, a loud beeping startled the new guardian causing her eyes to fly wide open and herself to raise up. Marinette looked ahead to see at the foot of her bed was her phone ringing. She reached forward grabbing her phone as her alarm for school was going off.
But it couldn’t be time not yet as between last night and the night before she barely had gotten four hours of sleep! The guardian shut off her alarm and stubbornly threw herself underneath her covers. It can’t be time for school. That wasn’t fair as she didn’t want to go. Maybe today could be her sick day, better yet a mental health day.
It was the minimum of what she deserved.
But she heard a knock at her bedroom door, the guardian’s body didn’t even budge.
There was more knocking on the door, her mother’s voice came through the door calling out to her. “Marinette, sweetie it’s time to wake up. You don’t want to be late for school again. This will be the fifth time this week that you have been hard to get up!”
Marinette just let out a loud groan, taking her pillow on her head and bending it to cover her ears like this was going to be one of the worst days of her life.
An hour passed as the guardian dragged herself out of the door of the bakery with her purse and backpack. Instead of her usual outfit she was wearing a black tank top underneath a soft pink cotton top with short cutout sleeves, black sweatpants, and pink converse sneakers. She had dark sunken in circles underneath her eyes. A few minutes after not responding Marinette’s mother came into her room after Tikki hid trying to coax the young guardian out of bed. It got to the point it was easier for Marinette to force herself out of bed than trying and failing to get some sleep in the midst of that. In addition, her typical arsenal of excuses failed her, each one that she could think of Sabine counteracted with the statement of hearing it all before.
So Marinette got up and got ready just figuring the best thing to do is suck it up for another day. That was the notion that she had in her mind as she crossed the street to school. As outside in front of the steps students stood in their own groups chatting away with each other before class started. Marinette spotted Alya leaning against the wall of the school steps on her phone.
“Hey,” Marinette yawned as she approached her friend.
“Hey girl,” Alya said looking up from her phone. “You’re actually on time today.”
“You can thank my mom,” Marinette faintly smiled. “She wouldn’t let me be nearly late five days in a row.”
“Good mom, but hey are you okay?” Alya raised a brow.
“Yes, I’m a little bit tired,” the guardian nodded her head. “No big deal.”
“Well you’re not the only one,” her best friend gestured her head to the right. “It seems that your “friend” haven’t gotten much sleep either.”
Marinette turned her head in the same direction as she saw Adrien and Nino a few feet away. Adrien looked similar to her, a glazed look with deep dark circles underneath his eyes.
“Dude, you okay?” Nino asked him. “You look wiped.”
“Huh?” Adrien asked, almost like he was spacing out. “Yeah I just had a long fencing practice last night to get ready for our tournament in the next few weeks. Then I stayed up late doing homework.”
“So you sure you are fine?” Alya asked, bringing the attention back to her. “These couple weeks, you have appeared more exhausted every time I seen you.”
“I’m just a little jag lag from our trip.”
“The trip that we came back from three weeks ago? Nice try, M, that’s not going to work this time.”
“Um...well...it’s true.”
“Okay maybe I’m sounding a little pushy but I’m just a little worried about you.”
“That’s sweet but there’s nothing to worry about.”
“It’s not just me but other people. Alix texted me asking if you were coming to the Louvre this weekend to check out the “Fashion Through The Ages” exhibit like you said you were, considering that you cancelled going ice skating last with us last weekend.”
“Really? Why did she not text me?”
“Maybe because it’s been a little hard to reach you lately? You really haven’t been picking up or replying to our texts. So she just figured what was the point?”
Marinette bit her lip as she remembered last weekend she had come home from defeating the villain Archaic around seven in the morning after she got an akuma alert two in the morning. She was utterly exhausted and knew no way that could make it to the ice rink around eleven so she just texted the girls that she couldn’t go and went to bed. Practically for these past couple weeks beside school it’s been a trade off her sleeping and being Ladybug.
“So what?” Marinette’s eyes shifted to the side.
“So what? I’m worried about you ever since we got back from New York. You’ve been saying that either you’re busy or that you’re going to just go home to sleep. But you are still looking exhausted. Is there something going on? It’s starting to look like you have a double life or something.”
“Double life?!” Marinette exclaimed. “No way, I’m too boring to have a double life. I’m so dull that flies don’t even land on me! Boring is my middle name Marinette “Boring” Dupain-Cheng!”
“Well Miss Boring then what’s keeping you up at night?” Alya folded her arms, as if she wasn’t going to accept anymore deflection.
Marinette was at a loss for words as the truth feeling poison in her throat that if spilled as it would come up like acid. That she would die either way in this public setting. Unless she did her least favorite habit.
Lying.
“Okay okay you got me,” the guardian gave her friend a tight smile. “You’re so good, Miss Reporter.”
“Huh?” her friend looked confused.
“I’ve been working hard on a very special project...for you and the girls,” she wrapped an arm around Alya’s shoulders.
“Really?”
“Yep, I have been doing this project for weeks...that’s why I have been busy and tired. It’s all for you girls.”
Alya just looked at her with a stern face.
Marinette bit her lip as she thought. Is she buying this? No way that she’s buying this, she knows me way too well.
Her friend just shook her head. “That’s really sweet but leave it up to you to do something nice that is causing your own detriment.”
“Well you know me...I’m a giver. So everybody can stop worrying, it’s all over now.”
“Alright,” the inspiring reporter sounded skeptical. “Then I guess we can come over and you can show us the surprise tomorrow.”
“What?” the guardian looked confused.
“You said it was over, that means you’re done right?”
“Right... I guess that’s what it means, right...”
“Cool, then the rest of the girls and I can come to your place tomorrow before you go to the museum. Since Nora and I gotta take the twins to the circus tonight.”
“Circus?” she asked her as if it’s the first she heard of this.
“Yeah, I told you on Tuesday that Ella won four tickets for Andrea’s Traveling Circus that is going to be in town this weekend. As she won the award for most improved student in her class. Nora and I were going to take them since my mom and dad are going out to celebrate their wedding anniversary, remember?”
“Oh yeah.”
A string of electronic chimes came from the school causing the students to wrap up their conversations as they started to make their way up the steps.
“Ugh, the warning bell, we got five minutes until class starts,” Alya started to walk toward the steps. “Let’s go, the last thing that we need is Ms. Bustier marking us late.”
“Right,” Marinette yawned while following her up the steps feeling this was going to be a long day.
With that Marinette entered the school and dragged herself through a typical school day with an overwhelming feeling of exhaustion. To her it felt like the day trudged on even during lunch while Alya told the girls about the surprise, the one that the guardian had came up on the spot. So imagine her relief when she reached her last class of the day: Early World History. Her sleepy eyes were glued to Ms. Bustier as she was in the middle of her lesson about the industrial revolution. As the teacher lectured the guardian tried to keep her eyes open, keeping her mind and hands busy by taking notes on her school issued tablet.
But it was hard to keep her head up.
She looked at the clock as it read 1:05 pm. There was only fifty five minutes left of the school day, fifty five long excruciating minutes. While her head felt like it weighed like a ton of bricks that went through a centrifuge.
Come on Marinette you just got less than an hour left, you can do this. She thought.
However, her eyelids were getting heavier. She rubbed them a bit letting out another yawn. Before she knew it she could hear the ringing of the school bell causing her bolt right back up in her seat with a loud gasp realizing that she had been laying her head on her desk. Marinette’s eyes darted around the classroom to see that all her classmates were staring at her with confused expressions on their faces. Suddenly her face turned a shade of beet red.
“Okay class that is enough for today we will finish up our lesson on Monday,” Ms. Bustier said, her stern eyes right on Marinette. “For homework please read chapters eighteen and nineteen over the weekend.”
After that instruction the class packed up for the day and started to leave for dismissal while Ms. Bustier turned to the classroom’s chalkboard starting to erase the board’s chalk writings.
“D-did I fall asleep?” Marinette turned to Alya.
“Yeah halfway through class,” Alya replied.
“Halfway through class? Why didn’t you wake me up?”
“I tried nudging you but you wouldn’t budge. It was like trying to move a brick house.”
“I was that out of it?”
“Yeah you literally were snoring during class,” Nino chimed in.
Marinette’s face became a deeper shade of red. “I don’t snore.”
“Trust me you do,” said a familiar voice.
Marinette looked away from Nino to see Chloè standing in front of their desks, arms folded with a little smug smile on her face.
“Seriously Dupain-Cheng who knew someone like you snored just like a pig,” the mayor’s daughter laughed. “I guess the whole class knows now.”
“At least I don’t sound like a strangled cat when I talk, like you do!” Marinette snapped at her.
Chloè’s blue eyes narrowed in shock as if she was surprised that kind of comment had been made.
“Marinette, can you please stay after class as I would like to talk to you,” Ms. Bustier said, still erasing the board.
Paris’ newest guardian’s eyes suddenly become big as saucers. While Chloè’s smug smile returned as she left the classroom.
Marinette buried her head in her hands. “I don’t believe this.”
“Do you want me to stay for you?” Adrien asked her.
Marinette moved her hands and looked back at the golden haired model. “Really?”
“Yeah it’s the least that I could do after you convinced my father to let me go to New York,” he said.
A tiny smile formed on her lips at that sentiment but then she looked at the dark circles underneath his eyes. He looked just exhausted as she did.
“Um no you don’t have to,” Marinette told him. “I mean...I appreciate it but I made bed now I need to lay in it.”
With that the group packed up the things and her friends left the classroom to carry out the rest of their day. Marinette walked down the steps with her backpack and purse to Ms.Bustier’s desk where the teacher was sitting looking through a stack of papers.
“Ms. Bustier, you said that you wanted to talk to me,” Marinette approached the desk, already feeling like she was on pins and needles.
“Yes Marinette as we have something to discuss,” said the teacher.
“About sleeping in class? I’m so sorry I didn’t mean too. I just didn’t get much sleep last night but I promise it will never happen again.”
“It is not exactly just that but also there is something else I would like to discuss.”
Ms. Bustier pulled out one of the sheets from the stack of papers that she was holding and placed it on the desk. It was a quiz paper with Marinette’s name written in the guardian’s own handwriting. The paper was covered with red ink markings and up top the final score was twenty five percent.
“This is your history quiz grade from the quiz that we took on Tuesday. I graded them all but didn’t have a chance to pass them out today like I planned,” Ms. Bustier told her. “But your grade is twenty five percent Marinette which is a F. Is there something you want to tell me?”
“Uh...I’m sorry.”
“This wasn’t a hard quiz either as the second lowest grade in the class was seventy two percent. Most of these questions were things we discussed in class and the others were from the textbook. Was you able to study?”
Marinette’s eyes shifted as she thought back to Monday night this week. She had taken a nap after coming home from school then started up her chemistry homework when her phone went off with an akuma alert. Steel Titan, a giant robot sentimonster was terrorizing downtown. By the time she got back she only had an hour before school that she used to finish her chemistry homework instead of studying.
“Just a little...I was busy,” she sheepishly told her teacher.
“With what?” Ms. Bustier’s eyes shifted from stern to concerned. “After falling asleep in class I’m worried about you Marinette. I have noticed that your grades have been slipping. So I would like to ask, is everything okay? Is there something going on at home?”
“What? Of course not, everything is fine.”
“Well about your personal life? Family, friends, relationships? If there is something you want to talk about I’m here to listen. It can be about anything.”
Marinette was unsure how to respond. What could tell her that she actually been Ladybug this whole time? That every time that she had been running late or had to excuse herself for a bathroom break she was saving the city. Along with Chat Noir she stopped Hawkmoth from plunging the world into another world war with two other heroes. That was now she was Paris’ only guardian of the miraculous because her mistakes caused the other one to give up his memories due to her getting so emotional over a guy she had recently given the friend label. That might have to suffer the same fate if she ever had to give up her title as guardian. That the thought of that actually terrifies her. She has been running herself so ragged that sometimes standing up is a chore.
Those are the things that she wanted to tell her but couldn’t.
“Nope, I just should have studied like I was supposed to,” Marinette told her. “Um, to be honest it’s my fault. I...stayed up late watching this show called Infinity Lights and I put off studying.”
“Infinity Lights? I love that show, how far are you?” Ms. Bustier stated.
“Uh,” Marinette started as she never saw a single episode of the show. The only reason she said it was because she saw a build board advertising the show when she swung home this morning. “Not far just the first season.”
“Ah so stakes haven’t really hiked up yet but what do you think about Miranda and Nick?”
“I like them. Miranda is my favorite.”
“Really? My favorite is Bridget. But is that the only thing going on?”
“Yes, I didn’t do well with organizing my priorities. So I’m in trouble?”
“Not exactly the grade that you earned on the quiz still stands; it is just a quiz grade so it shouldn’t impact your final grade significantly compared to a test. However, I would like you to promise me something.”
“A promise? What kind of promise?”
“I would like you to promise me that over this weekend you are going to get some rest. I expect you to come here Monday morning on time, well rested, homework done and ready to learn. If you can’t do it then I have no choice then call your parents and schedule a conference with your parents. To let them know about your grades and lack of sleep, do you understand?”
Marinette hanged her head. “Yes ma’am.”
After wrapping up things with Ms.Bustier, Marinette went home instantly going straight to her bedroom to get to work. As she had dug herself in a hole with her friends telling them about a great surprise that apparently took three weeks to do. She entered her room, dropping her purse and backpack on the floor to sit at her desk to think of something to make. Tikki flew out of her purse suggesting she get some sleep as she looked exhausted. But the guardian protested stating that she lied and now that she had to lie she must become an honest person by making the lie true. Tikki tried to convince her otherwise but Marinette was insistent. So here she was hours later still at her desk working in her sketchbook surrounded by wadded up balls of paper on her desk of rejected ideas. At first it was hats then phone cases then it was hand knitted scarfs. But either it was that she didn’t have enough time or materials.
It wasn’t until an hour ago that she settled on making homemade earrings as it looked enough that time was taken and she had the materials from a jewelry making kit that ironically Alya gave her for her birthday.
So there she was sketching as she had to make five original pairs of earrings all before tomorrow afternoon. However when trying to sketch Alya’s the first one on the list she couldn’t think of anything. It seemed the well of creativity that she usually tapped into had dried up.
Not to mention she was still tired.
“This is hopeless,” Marinette groaned.
Suddenly she heard a familiar beeping alert sound coming from her purse on the floor. The guardian’s heart was now filled with dread as she stood up from her seat being pulled to it by curiosity and obligation. She went into her purse and pulled out her phone to see the already lit screen. It had a notification that said:
AKUMA ALERT: SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY REPORTED BETWEEN THOMAS AVENUE AND DURAND AVENUE. PLEASE AVOID THIS AREA FOR THE TIME BEING. IF NEARBY GET TO SAFETY. ANOTHER NOTIFICATION WILL BE SENT ONCE THE AREA IS DEEMED SAFE. IF THERE’S A EMERGENCY PLEASE CALL EMERGENCY SERVICES.
Marinette looked at the notification as she knew where those streets were located deep downtown. It appeared that her alter ego was needed.

To put it simply, he had been in a rush. Competition season was just around the corner, and MJ was pushing the team to their limits with extra practice, which meant morning practice and after school practice. Peter had barely gotten out of the door once he remembered that he had to get to the school, being in the middle of a deep concentration as he perfected his winged eyeliner. Then, the after school practice ran a half an hour late because everyone was slacking on their ancient Greek philosophers. 
So there he was, scurrying out of the metal doors of Midtown and nearly ripping the car door off its hinges as he rushed into his seat.
“Hey Happy! I’m so so so sorry I’m late. MJ made us stay late because Flash didn’t know difference between Hypatia and Aspasia even though they have over a century apart, and then she started quizzing us on which philosophers specialized in Pythagorean, Peripatetic, or Pyrrhonist, and everyone kept mixing them up and we had to go over it for like twenty minutes until we all had it down and…”
“Don’t need the whole run down, bud. It’s okay,” Happy stated. “Couldn’t understand it if I tried.”
“Right. Sorry,” Peter said sheepishly. “How was your day?”
“Same old, same old. Once I drop you off, I’m heading back to the apartment.”
Peter’s eyes lit up. “Oh, it’s date night! Where are you taking May?”
“Do you remember that new restaurant near that bike shop?”
Peter’s mouth went agape. “That super fancy one where they put chocolate in everything?!”
Happy nodded with a soft grin. “That’s the one.”
“She always looks through the window when we pass by there! She looked up the menu and I swear she was drooling when she read about the bacon mac and cheese.” Peter smiled. “She’s gonna love it, Happy.”
“I hope so.”
“She will,” Peter reassured. With a content sigh, he pulled out his laptop. “I should probably get started on my research paper.”
“You know Tony’s rule,” Happy said.
“No lab work until homework is done,” Peter recited with a nod. “I know, I know. Which is why I’m doing it now.”
“Is it a blackout kinda day or a white noise one?” Happy asked.
“I could go for some of that boring piano music you like.”
Happy shoved Peter’s arm. “It’s not boring.”
“It just strips all the tenseness from my tight, aching muscles. It lulls me to sleep.”
“If it lulls you to sleep, then you shouldn’t be listening to it while you’re doing homework,” Happy said.
“Then, what do you suggest?” Peter asked.
Happy pressed the radio screen and a string quartet of Panic! at the Disco’s “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” began to play.
“Oh, you know me so well.”
Peter fell into a deep focus and had barely realized the car ride was over until Happy had said a soft “we’re here.”
“Thanks, Happy. Have a good evening!” Peter said cheerfully.
“You’re staying here tonight, right?” Happy asked.
“Yeah, I am. It’s a Compound weekend. Why…” Peter’s faced morphed into a disgusted grimace. “Actually, don’t tell me. I don’t want to know.” He shook his head. “See you later!” Happy gave a gentle wave before pulling out.
Peter let out a breath, shoving his hands in his pockets, as he headed into the Compound, fiddling with the watermelon gum wrappers crumpled deep in his jeans.
With a skip in his step, he entered the lab, plopping his backpack on the floor and hopping into his rollie chair with a little spin.
“Hello to you too,” Tony said with a laugh. “Bad traffic?”
“Late practice,” Peter corrected.
“She’s really drilling you guys, huh?” Tony asked. “Well, at least you’ll be prepared.” He looked up from his project, but stopped as he caught sight of Peter’s face. “New look?”
Peter furrowed his brows in confusion, but froze. He hadn’t used a makeup wipe on the drive there. “I… uhm… I… it’s not what it looks like.”
“Well it looks good. Would’ve barely noticed if it weren’t for the eyeliner it’s so natural. I mean really, you’re glowing. How do you get your skin looking so dewey and fresh?”
Peter’s brain could hardly catch up. “I mix highlighter with my foundation.”
“See, I’ve never thought about that. Mine always comes out so dull and flat. I’ll have to try that.”
“You, uh, you’ve worn makeup?” Peter stammered.
“When you’re on camera as much as me, you’ve gotta get at least a little pick me up. I mean, some of that shit is high definition. Do I really want people seeing my pores and pimples in high definition? No thank you.”
“Oh. Uh. Wow.”
“You can’t be new at this. I mean, it looks great. I’m jealous if you are.”
Peter shook his head. “I’ve been doing it for a couple months.”
“And why haven’t I seen it?” Tony questioned.
“I, uh, didn’t want you to think it was weird,” Peter admitted.
Tony softened. “Why would you think that?”
“I mean, I worry you think a lot of things are weird. I just, want to... impress you, I guess.”
“Well, wanna know what impresses me? That winged eyeliner. It takes Pepper ten minutes of fiddling with makeup remover on cue tips when she’s doing hers.”
Peter, nearly rendered speechless, nodded again. “It took a lot of practice.” He paused. “You’re really… you don’t think I’m weird?”
“I could never think you were weird, kid.” He pursed his lips. “Well, yes I can, because you put sour skittles in your chocolate ice cream, but that’s what makes me love you. Don’t be afraid to be weird. I’ve been weird all my life. Embrace the weird and conquer the world with your weirdness because one day, what used to be weird will be brilliant and people will want to be weird like you.”
Peter looked to his feet bashfully. “Thanks, Mr. Stark.”
“You know, Pepper has a big charity thing tonight. She could really use your help with her smokey eye.”
Peter perked up. “Really? I’ve… I’ve done makeup on May before, but I’ve never done it on someone with an eye shape like hers.” “Then this will be perfect practice!”
Peter got a little mascara on her eyelid, but he made up with the perfect blend of silver sparkle and charcoal shades.

“Stop squeezing your eyes, you’re gonna make the eyeliner bumpy.”
“Well, it’s a little hard to relax when you’ve got a pencil pressing against my eye.”
Peter sighed. “Ned, you just gotta breathe. I’m not gonna poke your eye.”
“It sure feels like you’re poking my eye,” Ned grumbled.
“I’ll do it even lighter,” Peter reassured.
It was 9AM, and Peter was trying to use as much precision in his rush to finish Ned and MJ’s makeup for the pride parade. He had finished his look, a blend of pinks, purples, and blues with silver glitter eyeliner, and was finishing Ned’s rainbow look, or at least, attempting to.
“You were doing so good, man,” Peter whined.
“Because it was all fluffy brushes before this!” Ned groaned. “Just get it over with.”
“I could if you would stop freaking squeezing your eyelids!”
MJ sighed. “Some of us are in the waiting dock, Ned.”
“I’m sorry! I’m not used to this!” Ned exclaimed.
Peter pulled gently at the skin on his browbone, making the skin pulled taunt enough to slide the eyeliner on with one smooth swipe. He followed suit with the other and slumped back into his chair. “Okay. You’re done.” 
“Oh, thank God, because I had to go to the bathroom at like the contour.” He scampered out of the bathroom, legs held tight. 
“What’s in store for me?” MJ asked.
“I was thinking a sharp edged blend of pink and to the dark pink to brown in the crease with a cut crease,” Peter thought out loud.
There was a knock at the door.
“You expecting someone?” MJ asked.
“No?” Peter said, confused. He went to the door, eyes widening in shock at the sight.
There was Tony Stark in a bright blue, pink, and yellow vertical striped suit.
“Mr. Stark! What are you doing here?”
“Today is pride, right?” Tony said with a cheeky grin on his lips.
“I-it is.”
“Great! Then, I’ll give you three a ride. I’m meeting the gang later.”
Peter’s nodded, mouth still wide open. “Because New York pride is endorsed by the Avengers. Right.”
“So, what do you say? I may or may not have pulled out my holographic chrome Ferrari.”
Peter rolled his eyes but let out a light chuckle. “Of course you did.” He stepped out of the way. “MJ’s look will be quick. If you want, I can do something for you?”
Tony grinned. “I’d love that.”
Behind his tinted shades, Tony rocked a pink crease, yellow lid, and blue lower lashline, a big smile adorned by a bright pink lipstick.

After the big robot invasion of 2025, the Avengers were beyond exhausted from the dealing with the repercussions and volunteering for the rebuilding.
For the first time in weeks after being preoccupied with volunteering, charity work, and clean up, they could finally relax for a group get together outside of work.
“You know what I could use?” Tony asked to no one in particular. “Really crappy, artificial, not at all traditional Chinese food. Who’s in?” The team all muttered words of agreement, melting into the cushions of the recreation room’s couches. 
“Text me your orders. I sent the menu in the groupchat.”
More mutters of acknowledgement.
Peter settled on the floor, makeup scattered on the coffee table, mouth agape as he stared intently at his reflection, fake lash in hand.
“What are you doing?” Steve asked.
“Graduation is just around the corner and I need to perfect my look for commencements,” Peter explained. He blinked, checking for any warping. “How does it look?” 
The team let out a low murmur of “oo”s and “ah”s and “nice.” 
“That looks fantastic,” Natasha praised.
“The adornments to your face are absolutely astonishing!” Thor praised. “Would you be so kind to apply your pigments to my eyes?”
Peter’s eyes widened. “You want me to do your makeup?”
“I’d love if you did mine, too,” Natasha said.
“I bet you could do some great red, white, and blue for me,” Steve said.
Peter looked around. “That could be really cool. Avengers inspired makeup looks on the Avengers? I mean, that’d be an honor.”
So he got started. As they feasted on fried rice and General Tso’s spicy chicken, they jammed to ABBA and looked fabulous while dancing to Dancing Queen.

“So, I made you some of that green juice you like so you can sip on that while we get you ready. We also put together a playlist of all of your favorite dishwashing music which we both know is also your hype playlist and you need to get a little hype! Let loose! In addition, we also brought you some of your favorite hors d’oeuvres such as chocolate covered strawberries, that basil spread with the tomatoes on the crunchy bread, caprese salad, and just a big pile of prosciutto because I know you like to stress eat salty meats.”
May smiled softly. “Thank you, baby. This is amazing.”
“How are you feeling?” Peter asked.
“Nervous. Excited. Mostly excited. How are… are you okay? With this?” 
Peter nodded. “Of course I am. You’re happy, Happy’s happy, and I… I’m happy. I’m happy that you could find something like this after Ben.”
She let out a shaky breath. “I’m getting married.”
Peter grinned. “You are.” He spun her chair. “Now sit there and be pretty while I do you even prettier.”
“You know, you were at my first wedding.”
Peter looked up. “I was?”
“You were just a baby, but Richard and Mary didn’t want to leave you at home after you had just gotten over your pneumonia. You were wearing a little onesie with a tuxedo printed on it, and you had your foofie.”
“I remember my foofie!” Peter smiled nostalgically as he envisioned the fluffy scarf that he snuggled with for years.
“You had just gotten it, and you would just run your fingers on the blue fluff, entranced by the texture on your little fingers.”
Peter chuckled. “Yeah. I loved that thing.”
“But, you caused a little bit of a scene.”
Peter furrowed his brows. “I did?”
“Well, your mom had just come back from feeding you and Ben wanted to make you giggle, so he was dancing with you, twirling and spinning you around, and I guess he jerked you around a bit too much and you vomited.”
“Oh no.”
“In his mouth and all over his tux.”
“Oh no.”
“So, really, there’s no reason to worry about messing anything up because at least you’re not doing that,” she said with a teasing grin.
“Well, I’ll try my best not to do that again,” Peter said. He softened, squeezing her hand gently. “You’re gonna make so many new memories and it’s gonna be awesome, May.”
“So are you,” May said. 
“I’m really happy for you.” He shook his head. “Now don’t you start crying and streak this amazing foundation I just put on.”
She let out a wet laugh and held her arms out. “C’mere.”
Peter gave her a tight hug, snuggling next to her in her cushy chair.
She placed a soft kiss to his forehead. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too.” He pulled away. “Now, c’mon. Stop stalling. I have to get this done so I can do mine.”

“Tony. Stop crying.”
“This is an emotional time and I am an emotional man!”
“It’s just homecoming.”
Tony crossed his arms and scowled at Peter. “Well you’re not one to talk about just homecoming.”
Peter pouted. “You crash a plane and nearly get killed by your homecoming date’s dad one time…”
“Look at my beautiful girl.” He pet her hairsprayed locks gently.
Morgan rolled her eyes with a smile on her dark red lips. “You’re so embarrassing, Dad.”
“So, when are we meeting this boy? Because then I’ll really be embarrassing.”
“Dad!” Morgan whined.
“You still have told me nothing about this boy. What are you hiding? Is he an Anti-Avenger protestor? Oh, oh! Or is he a scheming supervillain turning you to the dark side?” He gasped. “Does he work for Oscorp?”
“His name is Miles, he’s an artist, and he’s really really nice so please don’t screw this up for me because I really really like him.”
Tony softened. “I’ll behave.”
“Please,” Morgan pleaded.
“I’ll behave!” Tony repeated.
“He won’t,” Peter stated. “And we both know that.”
“Hey! I take offense to that,” Tony said.
“Well, as much as I love this wonderful family chat, I really gotta finish Morgan’s makeup, and when you stress her out, it makes her eyes scrunch up and I can’t get the blending right so… shoo. Scooch your booch outta here.”
“No. I want to stay,” Tony stated.
“Are you not gonna distract her?” Peter asked with a raised brow.
“Maybe…?”
“Tony!”
“Okay! Fine. I won’t say a word. You won’t even know I’m here.” Peter turned back to Morgan, packing a shimmery white on her lid, but flipped around when he heard a choked sob from behind.
“Tony,” he said exasperatedly.
“She’s just growing up so fast!”

Peter’s gloved hands trembled as he filled in his eyebrows in a room that did nothing to block the shutters of cameras and excited murmur from the large crowd on the other side of the wall.
Tony took his hand in his and gave them a gentle squeeze. “Are you sure you wanna do this? Because you can back out any time you’d like.” Peter shook his head. “It’s time. The new generation of Avengers deserve to have a real face to lead them, and for the public to trust us, they need to know that I trust them too. The world knows Spider-Man and his good. And now, they’ll know Peter Parker too.”
“They already know Peter Parker,” Tony said softly. “Peter Parker conducted the widest reaching scientific climate change campaign. He promoted carbon storage, protected and expanded forests in every country on every continent on the planet, and invented a reliable and accessible long-term energy source cheaper and easier to manufacture than fossil fuels. God, Peter. Once they find out that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, they’re going to love him even more.”
Peter’s face flushed a warm red. “Thanks, Tony.” He looked to his reflection and smiled sadly. Looking at his brown eyes, red blended to his crease and blue lining his lashline, he realized that this was the end to a lifetime of secrets and a new beginning where he could finally share the whole person he was.
“You ready?” Tony asked.
“How do I look?” Peter asked meekly.
“You look amazing.” He pulled him into a tender hug. “They’re gonna love you, kid.” He placed his hands firmly on his shoulders and gave a little squeeze. “Do you know how proud I am of you? Because I am. You’re really proving yourself to be quite the hero, and I don’t just mean in your bright red and blue, which really, are you sure we can’t negotiate something a little less gaudy…”
“Says Mr. Hot Rod Red and Gold…”
“I mean, bright blue? Even I have enough class and taste to know that bright blue is a little much.”
“Tony,” Peter said.
“I’m so proud of you kid. You’ve grown into a fantastic young man, and you’re gonna keep growing into a visionary for this next century. You might even outshine me.” He shook his head. “No. I know you will. Because I know you, and I know that you’re an intelligent, selfless, innovating, tenacious, unbelievably incredible person, and you’re gonna change the world.” He smiled a tight, teary smile. “And the world’s not gonna know what hit it once you give it all you’ve got.”
Peter slipped his mask on and took one last shaky breath. “Let’s go do this.”

Lucas swears he’s the absolute master of undetected stalking. Or: Eliott is instagram famous and Lucas is the disaster gay who accidentally likes his post.
He hasn’t heard from Eliott since Sunday. 
The professor’s monotone drawling fades out to the background as Lucas flips between the apps on his phone-- a foolish attempt to keep himself from opening up the one he actually wants to check on.
Eliott hasn’t posted anything since the Saturday they were together.
He contemplates sending a message but he can’t think of a good conversation starter. Saying a simple hello is super lame. Eliott always starts their chats with a clever line. How does he come up with those, anyway? Lucas would really appreciate a little insight right now. 
Lucas barely notices his classmates leaving the room and he scrambles to follow along, pocketing his phone so he’d stop staring at it already. 
He’s only taken a couple of steps outside when a vaguely familiar boy with shaven head almost rams right into him. 
“Shit, sorry!” Lucas steps aside at the last minute and the other boy’s arms do a hilarious windmill to keep balance. Neither of them end up on the floor so that’s awesome.
“Sorry!” The boy shouts back, looking at Lucas with wide eyes and a half formed grin. Lucas flinches, trying to hide the double take he almost does. This guy has the brightest green eyes a stark contrast to his dark skin and a bone structure that can cut glass. If he isn’t so ass over head infatuated with Eliott, his brain would probably register just how beautiful this person is. “Lucas?”
It takes a bit for him to realize that it’s weird how this person correctly guesses his name. “Uh, why?” 
“Idris!” The boy -- Idris? Instagram Idris? -- says, enthusiasm evident in his voice. “I’m Idris, I mean. Eliott sent me.” 
“Eliott... sent you?” Lucas keeps walking, not wanting to block the way to the classroom. Idris keeps up beside him. “But where is he?” 
Idris hands him a cup of hot chocolate-- it’s the one Lucas gets once a month to reward himself for not keeling over in stress. 
“He’s holed up in the library,” Idris says while Lucas’s still blinking down at the cup in his hands. “We have a project due very soon, me and him. We have to finish the storyboard.” 
Okay, it’s been two days though. Lucas just hopes they’re getting enough rest. He’s seen a lot of the other film students walking from building to building like dried up zombies. 
Idris keeps going before Lucas gets a word in. “His phone’s on airplane mode.” Lucas nods, watching Idris rub a hand over the top of his head. “Mine too, we do this thing. So we only focus on one thing at a time, you know.” 
Lucas starts to smile as Idris looks at him, slightly wide-eyed. He has a feeling this guy’s been running on pure caffeine since the weekend. “Okay.”
“My point is, he’s not ignoring you.” 
“I didn’t think so.” 
“Good. God, I told him he’s overreacting.” 
Lucas laughs, holding the hot chocolate to his chest. “He’s doing okay?”
“Yeah,” Idris scoffs, waving a dismissive hand. “He forgot to tell you about the whole project thing before, you know, shutting the world out so he’s been freaking out about it.” 
“Why?”
“He thinks you’d forget about him.”
“What?” Lucas laughs louder. “That’s dumb.”
“Yeah, well.” Idris shrugs, his laughter coming out in choppy chuckles. “Anyway, I’ve gotta get back to work, nice to meet you!” 
“You too.” Lucas takes a step backward, smiling to himself as he sips at the hot chocolate. From Eliott. How did Eliott know about his favourite campus drink? “Idris!” He calls out before the other boy is completely out of sight.
Idris turns, raising an eyebrow.
“Good luck with the project! And tell him me forgetting him is the last thing he has to worry about.” He says in a rush, half of him hoping Idris doesn’t hear him but the other half hoping the opposite as he doesn’t think he can repeat that without combusting.
Idris opens his mouth as if to say something but then he settles for a pout, both hands shooting up to clutch at his chest. “Fuck, you really are adorable.” 
Lucas turns away and brisk walks towards the next building.

Yann drops down beside him in the middle of Lucas doing his homework. He can feel Yann staring at him, but, infuriating best friend that he is, Yann doesn’t say anything as he does it. 
“What?” Lucas breaks the silence, putting his pen down.
“What?” Yann returns, opting for the most innocent of tones. It doesn’t work.
“Spill it.” 
“Nothing, man.” Yann looks down at the phone sitting innocently between them. “Just, you know, wondering if I should round up the guys to properly meet Eliott.”
That gets Lucas’ attention. “Why?”
Yann’s left eye twitches the slightest bit. “You can’t tell me there’s nothing between you two.”
“Well, there’s a thing.” Lucas shuts his textbook, losing any sort of motivation he had going earlier. “But there’s no thing.”
“Uh, okay?” 
“He’s not my man or anything.”
“Why not?” Yann asks, incredulous like it’s easy. Or maybe for him it really is that easy.
“I don’t know, we haven’t really talked about it?” 
He opens up instagram to a new private message, eyes narrowing when he sees the username.

“Lucas, his friends are messaging you.” Yann deadpans, obviously having read the conversation over Lucas’ shoulder because fuck manners apparently. “I think that’s a good indication of where he wants it to go.” 
“I don’t-- I don’t know, Yann. What if-- I don’t know him that well.”
“Yet.”
“But what if I... I don’t wanna get too attached and then for it to blow up in my face.” Lucas fidgets with his pen, twirling it restlessly between all fingers until Yann stills him with a gentle touch. 
“Lucas, not everyone will be like that.”
“How do you know?” 
“You’ve got to give people a chance to prove you wrong.”
“No one’s done it yet.” 
His phone pings again, but this time it’s from a different person. Yann looks down at it and Lucas can see the hint of a smile fighting to lift his expression. “I don’t think you’re the one who needs to worry about getting attached.”

Yann’s smiling when Lucas looks back up at him. “He talks about you with his friends.” 
“I’m pretty sure they’re just cornering me into meeting them.” Lucas chuckles, sliding his phone inside his hoodie pockets. “And I talk about him with you guys too, it’s no big deal.” 
“Are you kidding me? You never talked about Ra--”
“Anyway, what are we doing? Is this a slumber party now?”
Yann rolls his eyes. “Shut up.”
“Are we exchanging our deepest, darkest secrets?”
“That’s not how it goes.”
“Oh, so you’re the master of slumber parties now?”
“Yeah,” Yann shuffles lazily towards the backpack he’d thrown on the ground earlier. “Only slumber party invitees get to play this.” He pulls out the new game he’s just bought while skipping class in the morning, waving it around with a flourish as Lucas gapes up at it.
“No way, that’s so expensive.”
“Yeah, I saved up.”
“Nerd.”
“Then don’t play it.”
“No, let me!”
“Slumber party people only!”
“There are two of us, I’m the one making this a party!”
“No, you’re not even wearing pyjamas!” 
Lucas sleepily watches the television screen, fingers barely moving over the controls as he lets the final boss crush his character for the nth time. Beside him, Yann’s already passed out on the couch. 
He stretches out with a groan as quiet as he can manage, reaching over Yann to grab the remote and shut the screen off. He’s about to head to bed when his hands smack against the phone still in his pockets, and his fingers automatically open up instagram before his brain even registers the movement.

Lucas lays awake for a while after, tracking the cracks in the ceiling as his mind replays Yann’s words. You have to give people a chance to prove you wrong. He’s tried so many times, and every failure does nothing but strengthen the walls he’s trying so hard to scratch past. 
But maybe. 
Maybe this time.
Maybe.

WHITE ROSE WEEK 2018-DAY 1
Once again, I’m participating in White rose week, almost late likle always but better late than never (because I’m still sore about missing Bumbleby and Freezerburn week)

DAY 1: PARTNERSHIP/TEAMWORK
“I can’t believe I’m being obligated to take this class at all!”
The white haired girl muttered angrily to herself as she took her place in cooking class. When she enrolled in Beacon High, she did because of their high standards in education would allow her to achieve her goals or more specifically, what she thought was expected of her.
Headmaster Ozpin saw fit to create this subject for the school as a way to provide his students with some skills for the life outside of home and a way to relieve some stress and encourage creativity. The idea had been successful so far as many students even discovered their vocation in gastronomy thanks to these classes.
But to the heiress, this wasn’t the case. Never in her life, she had held a knife or prepared a meal, given that they had chefs to prepare food for them; hell, she barely had stepped into the kitchen in her short life and was promptly shooed out of it.
“Why would I need to learn how to cook when I could basically order take out or just eat on a restaurant? I have the means after all…anyway, father expects of me that I excel in my studies, so I better make sure I get and A on this”
Weiss finished her mental rant and took the first place she saw available, only to find besides her was a younger girl whose most outstanding feature was a pair of silver eyes which the blue eyed girl found quite beautiful even if she would never admit it to anyone who asked.
Given that the teacher hadn’t arrived, the white haired student opted to remain silent and wait but her plans were suddenly interrupted.
“Pssst, I’m Ruby. What’s your name?”
Weiss really didn’t want to reply at all and ignore her apparently chatty neighbor but ended up conceding that piece of information.
“Weiss. Weiss Schnee”
“Weiss? That’s a pretty name, it suits you perfectly and I think I’ve heard it somewhere hmmm. Well, it doesn’t matter; tell me, do you like cooking?”
“Why does she keep talking to me!?” The heiress thought desperately but couldn’t herself to stay quiet.
“I don’t think so. I do have a certain fondness for haute cuisine though”
“But haven’t you been curious about the way your favorite dishes are made? The desire to try and replicate the food that brings you joy?”
The read haired girl insisted much to the white haired one’s annoyance.
“I must say I haven’t. All of my life, the food we eat at home has been prepared by the best cooks we can afford so I don’t see why should I care about things like that”
“But, what if you live on your own?”
“I have the means to procure food for myself now if we could finish this conversation at this point, I would appreciate it”
In that very moment, the teacher finally arrived and all the conversations stopped and every student went to their respective place.
“Good afternoon students, I’m professor Peach and I’ll be teaching this class for the year. Given that some of you may not have any experience cooking we will start with some basics”
Saying that, Peach handed some peeled potatoes along with knives to teach the students how to cut the food in different ways and as expected, Weiss was struggling to even hold the knife properly.
When the white haired girl was trying to cut one of the potatoes into little cubes, she cut one of her fingers but her partner acted swiftly to patch her very flustered partner up.
“You have to hold the food in a way you don’t expose your fingers to injury so easily and if you put your index finger on the blunt side of the knife along with a firm grip to control the knife better. Here let me show you”
And so, Ruby took the knife and showed her classmate how to cut the potatoes into pieces in an efficient and safe way. Weiss had to give credit where it’s due, especially when she was nothing but a neophyte on this subject.
“There, why don’t you try it once more?”
“I…”
The bell ringed signaling the end of the class, which the heiress used as her ticket out of her current conundrum, for the time being at least.

Unfortunately, Weiss still had one more class before finishing school for the day, which was math. The subject itself was never a problem for the haired girl; what was troubling her was the fact that the girl with the silver yes was also her classmate at math class.
She tried to be as subtle as possible when she couldn’t help but to stare at her seat neighbor who was staring at her with this big smile plastered on her face.
“A smile that I find very cute but I’d rather come to class in pajamas before admitting it out loud”
“Say” the crimsonette whispered “Would you be interested in a partnership?”
“A partnership? Why would I be interested in one with you?”
“Well…I’m not exactly good at math but you are and you’re not good at cooking class but I’m quite experienced at the kitchen so I could help you get better at it and even enjoy cooking! What do you say?”
“Sounds a tad naïve about me enjoying cooking but she does offer a sound argument about us teaming up”
“I find your proposal coherent, therefore, I agree. Now, please be quiet and let’s pay attention to class”
And so, both girls were quiet during the reminder of the lesson and the bell ringed once more finalizing the end of classes for the day.
Since they had homework for the next class, Ruby used it as an opportunity to invite Weiss to her home and put the partnership on the act. They did homework first, with Weiss having to explain certain parts multiple times but they managed to get the job done, then, it was time to help with dinner which Ruby used as an opportunity to encourage the white haired girl to do what she left unfinished by cutting some vegetables. Weiss did a bit better than at class and felt that satisfaction one person can get when they accomplish something.
“Maybe this will prove more interesting than I thought. Thank you Ruby and see you at school”
With those words, Weiss said good bye to Ruby who waved while the car started the trek back to the Schnee mansion and stayed there until the car disappeared from her view.
It eventually became part of their routine. Weiss would help Ruby prep for math assignments or other school related activities and Ruby would do the same for Weiss when it came to cooking and other school related activities. They really had become best friends.
“So, why do you want to be a cook Ruby?”
The blue eyed girl finally decided to ask knowing for a while that Ruby’s dream along with her sister’s was to become chefs and open a catering service. She just thought it was a very personal question but Ruby didn’t seem bothered by it.
“Our mom was a chef and quite skilled at that. She even won some cooking contest when she bothered to participate in them. She always took time to teach Yang and me everything she knew and could, use it as a bonding activity.
She always imparted on us her belief that food could bring people closer and made their day a little better if done with love and care. One of her dreams was to open either a restaurant or a catering service for special events but unfortunately, she died thanks to cancer…*sniffs* we were 10 and 8 when that happened…
*sobs* we just want to make her dream come true and make the world a better place in our own way. Though we chose catering business because we both love a challenge”
Weiss promptly hugs the girl in front of her tightly.
“I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I think is very noble of you to try and achieve that dream.”
“Thank you Weiss for making me feel better”
“You’re welcome” was the only reply the white haired teenager managed to muster.
“Unlike me, you actually have a goal you can call your own...a defined purpose in life…”
Anymore thoughts were blocked by the need to console her partner, one she had come to cherish dearly and even love...
“Love!?” Weiss pondered surprised for saying that. “LOVE!? I…love Ruby!? But I can’t deny it, I really love her and would do the impossible to make her happy; now, if only I had the guts to confess my feelings...”
Getting out of the hug, albeit reluctantly, Ruby wiped the remaining tears from her eyes and smiled once more.
“Now, about our big project for cooking class: are we still on with the meat pie for it?” the silver eyed girl inquired getting a nod of approval from her blue eyed partner.
“Of course. I have made the list of ingredients already, found a supermarket where we can find all the ingredients in great quantity, quality and to an affordable price so we can buy enough for test and the day of the assignment”
“You really know how to organize your stuff Weiss! So, when do we go to buy them?”
“Is okay if we go tomorrow in the afternoon?
“Sure”
One again, saying their respective goodbyes for the day, Ruby embraced Weiss once more and thanked her for being there for her.
“You really mean a lot to me Weiss, never forget that” the red haired girl muttered before letting her bestie/love interest go back to her home.

One weekend was spent buying the ingredients and making test so that they would replicate the recipe flawlessly to Professor Peach and when they least expected it, the day finally came.
“Let’s do this Ruby!”
“Yeah! You start with the potatoes and pre heating the oven. I’ll take care of the ground beef and pork for the time being!”
They swiftly put hand into work. Working in perfect synchrony, anticipating what would their partner need in a certain moment.
And the pie was a success! Getting quite the congratulations from Professor Peach and the highest grade from all the students of their group. It was worthy of celebration.
After finishing the packing of their instruments and the leftover food, Weiss requested Ruby to accompany her to her locker where she had something stored she needed to retrieve.
To the crimsonette’s surprise, it was a Crème Brule which the snow haired girl proceeds to hand over to her.
“Ruby…Meeting you was a life changing event; one I don’t regret at all because it opened my eyes to something new and most importantly, it lead me to find love in the most unlikely of places”
“Weiss?”
“What I’m trying to say Ruby is that I love you; I have had feelings for you for a long time and only recently, I’ve managed to think of a way to confess my feelings to you through the very thing that led us to meet each other: food.
I just want to say that my feelings for you are real and I put all my heart into making that dessert to help demonstrate that so…would you like to be my girlfriend?”
Staying silent for a few seconds, Weiss started to fear the worst when suddenly a pair of lips touched her own in a short but sweet kiss.
“Of course I would love to be your girlfriend Weiss”
Seeing those silver eyes shine made Weiss’s heart flutter uncontrollably but seeing that her feeling were reciprocated to the highest level, it made her feel bold enough to make one more request:
“Could we seal this evolution in our partnership with a longer kiss?”
“Of course!”
And both girls proceeded to do so.

Time flew fast and the girls finally finished high school with great honor and achievements. Weiss announced that she would pursue a career in gastronomy along with Ruby but that was not the most surprising action of the moment. Jacques Schnee of all people gave Weiss his blessing to study her career choice saying that at least now she would do something she was truly passionate about.
Weiss and Ruby’s relationship grew up stronger by the day and when the time was right, they married with their wedding being one of the most spirited celebrations until the date according to friends and family of the couple.
But the time to reminisce was over. Today was an important day for all of them because the “Rose of Summer Catering Service” was hosting its first event.

Unfortunately, even the best planning in the world couldn't stop Adrien's schoolwork from taking over his life as they neared the end of the second semester. Professors added on extra homework and pushed on through their lessons, wanting to make sure that they had covered absolutely everything that was in the curriculum so that the students would be prepared for their exams. On top of that, the pressure was on for Adrien to get all of his assorted projects completed. He didn't want to slack on them at all, which meant that instead of riding the bus or the tube with Marinette to explore sections of the city they hadn't been to yet, he was taking the bus over to the school library.
It wasn't quite as exciting.
"At least we have another year to explore together," Adrien said as he and Marinette headed to bed one Friday night. Marinette's university-aged neighbor was once again throwing a late-night rager, like they did nearly every Friday despite the flurry of noise complaints that they got every time, and so she had come over again. "I know I want to go back to the museums again, and there's a zoo that Aaron just mentioned to me the other day that sounded interesting. I haven't been to one of those in ages."
Marinette raised an eyebrow at him. "Really? I think Nino and Alya go to the zoo in Paris, like, six times a year at least."
"Yeah, well, that's because they got together there," Adrien pointed out. "And because Alya's dad works there. Most people don't go that often."
Marinette's lips twitched up into a smile. "Uh-huh. And I take it that your not going there that often has nothing to do with any irrational fears about loose panthers and giraffes?"
Adrien just spluttered at that. "How- what- no, why would you think-?"
"I overheard Nino mentioning it to Alya once when you turned down a trip to the zoo with us," Marinette admitted. Adrien made a face at that. He had told Nino that in confidence, darn it. "So why the change of heart for this particular zoo?"
"It's different," Adrien said, shrugging. "It has some species that the Paris one doesn't. The setup is different, too. And I've grown out of any irrational fears I may or may not have had about giraffes and panthers," he added, making Marinette giggle. "And you can tell Nino that, too."
"Uh-huh. If you say so."
Adrien stuck out his tongue out at Marinette and decided to change the subject. While Marinette had mentioned that she was going to be sticking around for another year, they hadn't really talked much more about it. "Did it take Madam Rosalie long to decide to extend your internship?"
Marinette shook her head, thankfully not questioning the change in subject. "Not at all. I think she knew that I had been considering it before. She did ask that I put in a request earlier if I want to extend it again next year, just so she knows for sure how many interns to hire."
Adrien perked up. Was that even something Marinette was considering? It would be great to have Marinette next door for the entire time that he was in London. Once he got to his final year of university, he probably wouldn't have the time to go back to Paris to visit his friends and from what he had heard, he might even get so busy that he would forget to socialize. Having Marinette right next door would mean that he would get to see her, at least, and she could probably pull him out of study mode every once in a while so that he wouldn't forget to have fun.
"I'm not thinking that far out yet, though," Marinette added before Adrien could get too excited. "I just- it's hard to tell where I'll be in a year, if I happen to hear about or see any job openings at fashion companies in Paris."
"Right, I wouldn't want you to miss a chance to get a permanent job in Paris," Adrien said quickly. "Do you think you would ever go for a spot at my dad's company?"
Marinette had to pause and think about that. "I- I don't know. Maybe? I mean, he definitely focuses more of an elegant style than what I'm doing right now at Madam Rosalie's, but I think I would enjoy working with that kind of style, too. At least for a bit." Marinette paused and yawned, then continued. "And, I mean, I haven't exactly heard the best things about, y'know, not being yelled at for small mistakes and whatnot there. I got lucky with my internship with Madam Rosalie. She has high standards, of course, but she understands mistakes. She's open to critique. And she's a really good teacher, too. If we don't understand something or why something doesn't work, then she stops and explains it."
"And my father doesn't do that," Adrien finished. "...actually, I don't think he even interacts with his employees most of the time. He goes in sometimes to double-check that things are running smoothly and to check up on people's progress, but most of the time he's just working from his office at home. It probably helps keep the employee turnover down if they don't actually have to see him."
Marinette giggled.
"So you would just work there until something better comes up?" Adrien asked as they slid into his bed. He paused for a moment, feeling like he might be forgetting something, then shook the feeling off and refocused on what Marinette had said. From what he had heard, that was a fairly common strategy among a large portion of Gabriel's designers. There were a couple that had been there since Adrien was a child, but others stayed from anywhere from a few months to four or five years before leaving. The turnover didn't particularly bother his father.
As long as the work got done and people didn't question Gabriel's authority, he really didn't care about the turnover. The designers that he liked the most, the ones that really made Gabriel shine- they ended up sticking around, probably because they got preferential treatment.
Well. As preferential as Mr. Agreste got, at least. It usually involved pay raises and less yelling at them.
Marinette shrugged. "I guess. There's a couple smaller design houses based in Paris that would probably be a better fit for my design style and that would have a way better working environment, but it's impossible to tell until I've actually worked there for a bit or talked to people who have worked there. They might be smaller than Gabriel, but I don't mind that, really. You get to know everyone then."
"If there was one thing you could change about Rosalie Fashions, what is it?" Adrien asked, curious about what Marinette was looking for. Marinette rarely complained about her work, and when she did, it was mostly about a design not turning out quite right or something else going wrong by chance, not the working conditions themselves.
Marinette just took a few seconds to think about it. "Location, I think," she finally said. "If it was based in Paris instead of London, it would be perfect. I'm enjoying being here, of course, and having to set up my own apartment was an important experience, and I'm glad I get to spend time with you, of course- "
"Obviously," Adrien chipped in, grinning when Marinette kicked him under the blankets.
"But I couldn't do it long-term," Marinette finished. "I couldn't live that far away from my family and friends permanently. It's easier with phone calls and video chatting, of course, but I got used to seeing people in person a few times a week, and being able to just go over and visit my parents whenever, you know? I can't really envision leaving Paris permanently."
Adrien could understand that, at least partially. While he wasn't close to his father at all, he was close to his friends. He had a whole network of people to talk to in Paris if he was having trouble with something, while in London he only had a handful of people that he knew, and even fewer people that really understood him and who he would be comfortable sharing his problems with.
On top of that, Chat Noir was most at home in Paris, where he could run and shout with Ladybug in full view of the city instead of staying hidden all the time.
"I'll definitely be returning to Paris as well once I graduate," Adrien said, realizing with a jolt that he hadn't responded to Marinette. "I get what you mean, with not wanting to be away long-term. It's fine now, but sometimes I find myself going 'Oh, I'll just pop over to see Nino tonight' or 'maybe our group should get together this weekend' or something, and I realize how much I miss Paris."
They both fell silent for a moment. Being homesick wasn't something they had really talked about much before, probably because it wasn't really a big problem. Sure, there were times that Adrien wished that he could call Nino up to hang out somewhere and then he was let down when he remembered that it wasn't possible, but then he would remember that he had a study group with Paul to look forward to, or a video chat with his friends on Sunday evening and this time Juleka and Max would be able to join in with Nino and Alya. It was different, but not necessarily bad different.
"I'm glad I came to London, though," Marinette said, breaking the silence. "It's nice to see what else is out there and to see how much I can do on my own without my parents to run to for help. Not that they haven't helped," she added, shrugging. "When I first arrived, there was some problem with my credit card and I had forgotten my checkbook back in Paris. My dad paid my first apartment bill and called up the credit card company to get things figured out and my mom sent my checkbook. I would have been in real trouble if they hadn't helped."
Adrien hadn't heard about that particular incident before. Knowing that Marinette, who always had seemed so on top of things, sometimes slipped up at well... well, it helped to know that she wasn't above mistakes sometimes.
"It's nice to be able to ask for help," Adrien agreed. While he probably wouldn't go to his father, he knew that Nathalie would help him out if he ever asked. In fact, she would probably have his problem resolved within a minute of receiving his message.
Her efficiency was a little terrifying sometimes.
Actually, come to think of it, the efficiency of all of his father's household staff was a little terrifying. That was probably a requirement for employment.
"I'm always happier when I don't need to ask for help, though," Marinette finished, settling fully into bed. "It feels like more of an accomplishment if I can solve problems on my own instead of calling people up, but sometimes it would just take too long for me to figure things out on my own." She yawned, then shuffled a bit more to get comfortable before closing her eyes. "But anyway. Good night, Adrien."
"G'night, Marinette," Adrien replied through a yawn of his own, turning over and flipping off his lamp light. He stayed awake for a few minutes more, listening as Marinette's breathing evened out as she fell asleep. He could hear the faint sounds of music from Marinette's neighbor coming through the walls still, but Adrien couldn't find it in himself to be irritated about it at all. After all, it brought Marinette over to sleep next to him, and for whatever reason, Adrien had always been strangely comfortable around Marinette. But right now, he was feeling jittery, itchy, like he had forgotten something.
It was probably nothing. And even if he did forget something, there was no reason it couldn't wait until morning.
  Marinette woke up earlier than she would have liked Saturday morning, but she didn't immediately get up. She was comfortably warm under Adrien's sheets and still a bit sleepy yet. She was sure she would fall back asleep for a few hours if she just stayed where she was.
It was Saturday; there was no hurry. She had a couple fabric pattern designs that she wanted to clean up, but they could wait until the afternoon. Right now, sleep called to her.
"ADRIEN! Adrien, it's an emergency, we're out of Camembert!"
...unfortunately, the universe had other ideas.
Marinette groaned and buried her face in Adrien's pillow to try to block out the loud voice, positive that she was dreaming. Surely the voice would go away, obviously it was just a dream, because why else would it be so weird-
"We ran out of my Camembert yesterday, and you didn't leave out anything for me to eat last night. It's an emergency, we need to go grocery shopping now-"
"What the hell-" Marinette started as she woke up completely and realized that the voice wasn't a dream, fully intending to chew out whatever weird friend Adrien had that had somehow gotten into his flat, because clearly that was what was going on. Really, it was ridiculous that someone would barge in, complaining about Camembert cheese, of all things. And how had someone gotten close to Adrien so fast that they had already somehow gotten access to a key to his door without Marinette knowing about it? She had been positive that she knew all of Adrien's friends.
Marinette pushed herself up, ready to snap at whatever idiot had made their way into the apartment. But when she turned towards the source of the voice, she came face to face with a small, floating, catlike sprite.
What.
"Whoops," the black thing said.
Marinette furrowed her brow as her brain tried to catch up with the scene in front of her. The sight of the black thing rang a bell for some reason, like she had heard about it before.
Small floating black cat...small floating black cat...small floating-
"CHAT NOIR?"
Next to Marinette, Adrien jumped, finally startled awake. He flipped over with a groan, nearly landing on Marinette, and squinted up at Plagg. His expression became somewhat alarmed as he looked between his kwami and his startled friend.
"Uhhh..."
"You're Chat Noir," Marinette breathed again, staring at her friend. How had she missed that? She spent practically all of her free time with him, and looking at him now, with his messy bedhead, the resemblance to Chat Noir was really strong. Looking back, she should have made the connection- he was missing or late when she was, he had the odd tendency to show up near akuma attacks after they were finished, she had never seen him and Chat Noir at the same time- ugh! Oh, she definitely should have guessed, just from the times Chat Noir had inexplicably vanished when Adrien had to make an appearance. She had thought it was strange at the time, but she hadn't ever entertained the notion that Adrien might be Chat Noir, even once she got to know Adrien and his ridiculous sense of humor.
She had once grumbled to Tikki about how the boys in her life all had an awful sense of humor- and loved puns far too much- but she hadn't made the connection. Tikki had giggled about that for forever, which made sense now. She probably knew, the little imp.
"I guess the cat's out of the bag," the black kwami said, floating closer. "Hi, I'm Plagg. I need cheese, and we're out. Do you have any Camembert in your fridge?"
"Er, no," Marinette responded, glancing back at Adrien. His eyes were wide as he mouthed something at his kwami. She was guessing that it was something along the lines of 'WHAT ARE YOU DOING?', but she couldn't tell for sure. For all she knew, he could be cheering the kwami on.
"Pity." Losing interest, the kwami floated over to Adrien. "We need to go to the grocery store now. I'm starving. And this idiot forgot to give me any cheese last night. I'm going to wither away and die."
"You- you can't-" Adrien had regained some of his voice but clearly was still at a complete and utter loss for words. "You can't just do that! What-? You said no one can know-"
"She's fine," Plagg said with barely a glance at Marinette. "Besides, you were the one who brought her in here last night without warning me and then forgot to feed me. Now can we get my cheese?"
Marinette was suddenly very, very glad that she hadn't gotten Plagg. Tikki was much nicer.
"She- what-"
"Breathe, Adrien," Marinette suggested, reaching over to rub his shoulder. The shock of the reveal had worn out for the most part, and now she needed to focus on her panicking partner. "It's okay-"
"It's not!" Adrien exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air. "No one's supposed to know who we are, even now that Hawkmoth's been defeated! Plagg can't just come waltzing in here and expose me to a civilian-"
"Not exactly a civilian, but okay," Marinette said helpfully, figuring that if she knew Chat Noir's identity it would probably be fine if he knew hers, especially since she now knew that he was one of her closest friends, but Adrien didn't seem to hear her.
"You can't tell Alya," Adrien suddenly blurted, swinging around to face Marinette. "I mean, I love Alya and all and I want to think that she wouldn't publish anything, but she's just been a huge fan for so long and then there's the Ladyblog, and I don't want her trying to score interviews on demand because that would be just exhausting, and-"
Marinette tuned him out as she scanned the room, looking for any signs of Tikki. A flash of red caught her eye, and she spotted a big blue eye staring back at her. She beckoned, and Tikki flitted up just out of Adrien's sight. Marinette raised an eyebrow, mouthing "Can I?"
Tikki paused for a moment, exchanged a glance with Plagg, and then nodded furiously. Marinette scooped the kwami out of the air and brought her up to sit in her lap while Adrien jumped out of bed and paced up and down the room, running his hands through his bed-mussed hair. His hair was really sticking up all over the place now, and he wasn't paying attention to her at all as he freaked out.
"-and at least Hawkmoth is gone so I don't have to worry about him and I won't have to make up lame excuses whenever I want to go out and run into Ladybug- I mean! Not that Ladybug is necessarily in London, I meant once we go back to Paris to visit people then I can run into Ladybug- not that she's necessarily there right now either-"
"Can we take bets on how long it'll take him to catch on?" Plagg asked as he perched on Marinette's knee and watched his Chosen with interest. "I'm guessing it'll take him at least five minutes."
"That would be rude, Plagg!"
"It's funny!"
"-and maybe someone finding out was inevitable but I didn't think that it would happen today and I kind of thought that Ladybug and I would probably reveal our identities to each other first- I mean, you're good too, of course, but- EEEEK!"
"Like I said, not exactly a civilian," Marinette said dryly as Adrien continued to gawk at Tikki as she sat in Marinette's lap. "Are you done freaking out now?"
"B-but that's a kwami!"
"My name is Tikki," Tikki piped up, waving up at Adrien. "It's nice to meet you properly!"
"You're Ladybug's kwami!"
"I've had her since collège," Marinette said helpfully. "She likes cookies. Especially chocolate chip ones."
"You're Ladybug!"
"Are we done pointing out facts now?" Plagg asked dryly from his perch on Marinette's knee. "If so, great. If not, I'm hungry."
"You're always hungry," Tikki pointed out. "And there's some Gouda in the fridge, I saw it yesterday. Unless you've eaten it already-"
"I wanted Camembert." Plagg flew into the air and straight into Adrien's face. "Can we go grocery shopping now?"
"Maybe we should give him some time to adjust," Tikki said after a moment. She flew up and grabbed Plagg by the tail. "C'mon, let's give them some space."
"But what about my Camembeeeeert?"
Plagg's whining faded away as Tikki forcibly dragged Plagg out of the room and down the hallway. Adrien's eyes tracked his kwami until he vanished from sight, and then his eyes snapped immediately back to Marinette. They were the approximate size of saucers as he gaped at her. Marinette waited, waited some more, then finally decided that she would have to say something if she wanted to jolt Adrien back into responsiveness.
"Um...hi?"
Adrien only blinked.
"Adrien? Chat Noir?" Marinette waved a hand in front of his face. "Kitty?"
That seemed to knock him out of his daze. Adrien blinked, shook himself, then breathed, "You're Ladybug."
"Er. Yes?" Marinette tried for a smile. "Uh...surprise?"
"I had no clue," Adrien breathed, shaking his head. He finally seemed to be snapping out of his startled daze. "Just- wow."
"I already knew that Chat Noir had to be someone in this building," Marinette admitted, figuring that she might as well admit it now that everything else was out in the open. "Because you had said that you saw me- well, me as Ladybug- go past your living room window once, and I had literally just headed out and the only windows I had gone past were the ones on this building."
It took Adrien a moment to remember what she was talking about, and then it clicked. "Oh! Right, last fall! I wondered what on earth I could have possibly said to make you make that face. I thought I had said something horribly offensive."
"No, I was just startled." Marinette let out a short laugh. "Imagine what my expression would have looked like if I had only passed your windows that evening! I probably would have fallen off of the roof in surprise."
"I guess I can't even fault you for the funky expression back then when I froze up for an entire minute," Adrien said, shaking his head with a short laugh. "I can only imagine what my face looked like when I saw Tikki and put things together."
Marinette giggled. "It was pretty funny. But I'm sure I was just as bad when I woke up with your kwami right there."
Adrien froze, and then his lower lip jutted out in a pout as he let out a whine. "Aww! I didn't even get to enjoy your expression! That's no fair!"
Marinette could only giggle.
"I was too busy freaking out over you discovering me to appreciate your face," Adrien grumbled, flopping back down onto the bed next to Marinette. Then he sent a sly look her way. "I mean, not that I don't always appreciate your face. It's a fine face, after all. Absolutely gorgeous."
"Aaaand he's back," Marinette teased, reaching over to boop Adrien's nose. He automatically wrinkled it at her. "Flirty kitty."
Adrien shrugged, utterly unabashed. "Honest kitty."
Before Marinette could think of a response (and before Adrien noticed the color rising fast in her cheeks because how was she supposed to stay calm and collected when her kitty- who was Adrien- was saying she was gorgeous), Plagg popped back into the room. "Are you done being sappy? Can we get my cheese now?"
She had never seen Adrien whip around so quickly. Color rose fast in his cheeks. "P-Plagg! I- I'm not being sappy- I mean, did you really have to come in right now? You couldn't wait a few more minutes?"
"I haven't been fed since yesterday afternoon," Plagg complained again. "I'll waste away if you spend all day making gooey eyes at Lady Luck instead of feeding me."
"It's not exactly like I find out my partner's secret identity every day," Adrien argued, deciding to recline further on the bed instead of giving in to Plagg's demands. "Give me some time to get used to the idea, why don't you?"
Plagg scoffed, folding his little arms. "Uh-huh. You say that like you don't spend every waking minute that you can glued to her side."
"What does that have to do with anything?" Adrien demanded, perplexed. "Sure, we hang out, but what does that have to do with me finding out that she's Ladybug?"
"Yeah, Plagg," Tikki piped up, reappearing in the doorway and looking smug. "What does that have to do with how much time they spend with each other?"
Plagg scowled. "It means that they shouldn't be that surprised! C'mon, hurry up, I want my cheese!"
"I like how Tikki is waiting patiently and not harassing Marinette and I," Adrien shot back. Tikki smirked and preened at the praise.
That only served to make Plagg scowl more. "Yeah, she's fine because her Chosen didn't forget to feed her last night! Marinette left out cookies for Tikki to eat, and where did you leave my cheese? Locked away in the fridge, that's where, and I wasn't about to phase through the door to eat in a cold, dark, smelly fridge then, and I'm not about to do it now, either, just so you can cuddle with Ladybug when you do it all the time anyway!"
Marinette was trying really really hard not to laugh now. Adrien looked so ticked off, and Plagg clearly didn't care.
"Maybe if you just got him some normal cheese he would agree to back off for a couple hours," Marinette suggested when the stare-off between Adrien and Plagg didn't seem like it would end any time soon. "And then you can go shopping for, uh, Camembert later on."
"I like her," Plagg decided. "For now, at least. So whaddya got for me to eat?"
Adrien only sighed.

A Snippet
To all nine of you that follow me, I just wanted to say thanks. To anyone else who sees this, I figured I might put this out there as a feeler so y’all can see my writing, if you want. This is the first chapter from a story I’m writing about the son of Lugh the Long-handed, the Celtic god of light, who is also a reincarnation of his son CuChullain, growing up in modern America and has to deal with mythical bullshit alla PJO/HOO but, like, adultier and angstier. So. Yeah.
Also, an important note. Please feel free to reblog if you want, comment, I don’t care, but THIS IS NOT A WRITING PROMPT and it would really hurt my feelings if one of y’all took my idea and used it and wrote a book off of my chapter or something and I’d probably cry and scream and break something and feel pretty stabby and I don’t like feeling stabby so please please please please please don’t do that kay thanks.
Chapter 1
I'm not here to tell you that your problems aren't valid, because everyone has issues. But, seriously, if you heard what was going on in my life, you'd agree: other issues seem easy. Because, you see, as hard as going through a layoff and a divorce and your dog dying are, you still probably don't have to deal with almost getting your head blown off on the regular, do you, George? No? Didn't think so.
It's kind of a long story, and parts of it will probably sound familiar. But for you to really understand what's going on, I'll have to start at the beginning. It was my senior year of high school. Yeah, already a bad start, I know.
I was on my way out of the building at the end of the school day. Normally, at the end of the day, I would meet up with my best friend and we'd drive home to pretend we were gonna do our homework and really just play video games.
So I walked out of the building and found Asim waiting by the car.
Asim Bahadur Qarim is one of the greatest men who ever lived and that's a fact. His parents came to America when he was young, so young he doesn't remember his home in Iran. But they ran from all of the political turmoil that befell basically the entire Middle East, and they already had friends and family in America. Luckily, Mr. Qarim made friends with some soldiers that were taking some time off from their deployment. One of them, who came to be known to us as Uncle Miles, put them up in his place until they could find work and a house.
Now, Asim was about to graduate high school and had been accepted into Julliard in the fall for his acting talents. He, in part, wanted to do what he loved and make his parents proud, but he also wanted to be a famous Muslim actor, something he didn't see a whole lot of.
Asim was a handsome guy, or so the girls we went to school with kept reminding us. He had coal black hair that fell in wavy locks about his head. He kept it long enough to fall to his neck but not enough to hit his collar if he was wearing a collared shirt. His eyes were like black coffee, and his skin more like a mocha. His frame was strong but thin, as his exercise included mostly running and hiking. He had thick stubble on his face, thicker on his lip and chin. He was leaning against the hood of my car, one of his black loafers up on the body, with his thick jacket on and a pair of black jeans, a scarf around his neck and a beanie on his head. He was smoking a cigarette, putting it out and putting it back in his pack when he saw me.
“Really, man?” I said walking up. “Right before we get in the car?”
“Roll the windows down,” he said with a shrug.
“It’s January you turd.”
We got into the car, a dumpy little station wagon that was pretty much all that my parents could afford. But it didn’t matter. It had four wheels and an engine, so I was happy. In addition, the heater worked, which was especially good since I would have to sit in the car with Smokey Bear.
“I’m so excited to go skiing this weekend!” Asim said.
“Me too!” Since my parents didn’t have a whole lot of money, they spent all year every year saving up so that we could go on a big trip for Christmas. This year, they were taking Asim and me to a ski resort out in the mountains. I had been looking forward to the trip since September. “You packed, right?”
“Yeah, if we can just swing by my place really quick.”
I nodded and started heading for Asim’s house. It was a short drive, and we were there in no time. He ran into the house and was back out in a few minutes. Neither of his parents were home yet, but they would be meeting us at the resort later. My parents didn’t pay for them, but of course they invited the Qarim family, who graciously accepted. They were even bringing Uncle Miles.
We went back to my house, a tiny little townhouse in the suburbs just a couple miles from school. I ran inside and to the second floor to grab my bag from my room. I started heading back downstairs and looked at the walls that were covered with pictures of the three of us. I stepped out into the living room to see our sparsely-furnished but well-loved home, covered in even more pictures, month old newspapers my dad hadn’t gotten rid of, and old files from projects my mom finished and never cleaned up. It felt like home.
I sighed and stepped back outside. The air was colder than I remembered, so I drew my scarf up further around my neck and walked back to the car. I got in and was glad to be in the heat again. I rolled up the windows, the smell of cigarettes now gone from the cabin of the vehicle.
So we made our way to the highway and off to the mountains. It was a while before either of us spoke, but neither of us needed to. We were both comfortable enough with each other that we could sit in silence for hours.
Inevitably, one of us broke the silence. “Did you pick a school yet?” Asim asked. This had been a topic of hot debate for quite some time. I wanted to go to college, but I had no idea what to study. I had no idea what school to go to. I was kinda falling off the back of the wagon.
“No, I haven’t,” I said.
“Gotta get on that if you want to go to college.”
“Well, there’s community college.”
“You wanna be a community college guy?”
I gave him a glare quickly, then looked back at the road. “What’s wrong with community college?”
Asim suddenly got an uncomfortable look on his face. “That’s not what I meant.”
“What did you mean, then?”
Asim was suddenly confused, and looking flustered. His cheeks flushed and he lowered himself in his seat. “I’m suddenly feeling very attacked.”
I chuckled. “Asim, I’m fucking with you. I know what you mean, but I don’t care. Fuck the stigma associated with community college. I’ll be getting an education for a fraction of the cost of something like Juilliard.”
Asim relaxed a little, some of the color leaving his cheeks. “Dude, don’t do that to me.”
“Well, I’m not some super star, so it isn’t like I can get into Juilliard. I’m not an athlete, so I can’t get into a D1 school. I’m no super computer that could make Stanford, or an engineering prodigy to go to MIT, or a social demigod to get into Harvard. I’m just… me.”
“You know as well as I do that you could have done any one of those things if you actually wanted to.”
Asim was right, of course. My biggest issue was that I never applied myself. My grades were always rather lackluster. I got good enough grades that my parents wouldn’t be on my back about it all the time, but not good enough to warrant any awards or scholarships. I was in fantastic shape and could have easily been a star football player, or track star, or a wrestler, baseball player, whatever I wanted. I was capable of doing it all, but I didn’t care enough to try. I never wanted to be on a stage, either, unlike Asim. I could sing, dance, act, I even dabbled in poetry from time to time, but I had no desire to share that with anyone.
“That’s not the point,” I said quietly.
“Then what is, Seth?”
“Maybe I don’t want to be in the spotlight. Maybe I just want to be a background character, like a librarian or something.”
“So what will you do then? Do you want to be a librarian?”
“Well… no… but you’re missing the point. Not every job needs a bachelor’s degree.”
“Then find one, and get passionate about it. I haven’t seen you passionate about anything in a long time, man. I’m starting to get worried.”
“That’s not true!”
“Oh, really? Name one thing.”
“I was really passionate about supporting you in The Sound of Music a couple months ago.”
“That doesn’t count, Seth! I mean your own stuff. The last time you were passionate about anything you did yourself was a long time ago! Ever since Becca—”
He winced, froze, and calmed down. He slunk down in his seat again, trying to make himself look smaller, almost like he wanted to hide from me.
“I’m sorry.”
“No, it’s fine,” I said. “It’s been a year since she… well, yeah. I should be getting better by now.”
“It’s completely understandable, Seth. When Becca…”
“Died, Asim. She died. There’s no sense in hiding it, or denying it. She died.”
“Alright, when Becca… died… it was devastating. I mean, I lost my best friend. I can only imagine what it was like for you.”
I let out a deep sigh.
“Becca was everything to me, Asim. She was more than just my best friend, and my girlfriend. She was my muse. I wrote poetry because she inspired it. I sang because she made my heart sing. I danced because she made it hard for me to sit still. I worked out and got better grades because she inspired me to be better, and to make something of myself one day. When she died, she took it all with her. My love, my heart, my passion. It all faded.”
Asim put a hand on my shoulder. It wasn’t a lot, but I knew the intent behind it. I took one hand from the wheel so that I could cover his, holding tight for a second before letting go.
“Eventually you’ll have to do something, Seth. You’ll have to make some kind of decision, pick a path.”
“Eventually I will. But for now, I’ll survive.”
We sat in silence for a little while longer before I spoke again.
“For the record, I wanted to teach.”
Asim nodded. “That’s a noble pursuit there, Seth. For someone who says he doesn’t care, you sure seem to.”
“I always thought that the best teachers were the worst students,” I said.
“How does that make any sense?”
“Well, think about it this way. The teacher who was a bad student, who messed around with drugs and got in trouble, maybe got a girl pregnant or wrecked his dad’s car, that teacher understands the hardest parts of being a teenager because he succumbed to them. So, I didn’t necessarily do all of those things, but I have not been a great student and I would understand a kid who doesn’t like to do their school work. Maybe I could help them.”
Asim shrugged. “Maybe you’re right. I never thought about it that way.”
“Everyone has their own beasts to slay.”
We concluded our ride in silence. It was only another hour to the resort, so we arrived and found the house, going by the rental office to pick up the keys. Good thing my parents thought to put my name on the rental so I could sign for them.
We got up to the house, a nice little place up in the mountains. It was big enough for the six of us to fit comfortably, but not too big that we felt spaced out.
The first room we walked into was a kitchen, which opened out into a living and dining room beyond. None of the rooms had real walls separating them, just an island separating the kitchen from the living room. There was a staircase off in the back right corner of the living room that seemed to head down into a basement. Based on the placement of the house on the side of a hill, I figured that it would open out to the hill side.
We walked in and headed down the stairs. There was another open area with a television and a DVD player. There were a few doors off of the open room, indicating that they were the bedrooms. Two had queen beds, one had two twin beds, and one had a bunk bed and a twin bed. Asim and I moved our bags into the room with the bunk bed and set them down.
“Alright, now what?” Asim asked.
I shrugged. “We go shopping.”
I grabbed some paper out of a drawer and a pen and wrote a quick note:
Mom, dad,
Went out for groceries. Key under mat. See you soon.
Love,
Seth and Asim
Then Asim and I went on a very routine shopping trip. That was about the last part of our trip that was “routine” in any way.

You were convinced. He was the most annoying fuckboy you had ever met. There were at least 10 other girls in your class, that were just as good looking as you. But for some reason he had chosen you. You didn’t understand why, but ever since he had first seen you, he hadn’t stopped trying to get with you. The amount of times he had asked you for your number was out of control. Not that you were going to give it to him any time soon.
You had to admit, he was smooth. He never seemed to run out of energy when it came to making up pick-up lines and asking you about your previous boyfriend. You had broken up with him after he had cheated on you. It turned out he had only been in it for the sex, and it prompted you to have lost all trust in boys. Otherwise, mr. fuckboy was the annoying but smart kid in class, who every teacher wanted to hate. They simply couldn’t, though, because no matter how many silly remarks he made, he always made up for them with just as many clever ones. He did manage to make you laugh too, at times when you weren’t busy being annoyed at him. All he seemed to think about was sex. And you.
The worst part about hating his acting though, was, by far, his handsomeness. Of course you would never admit it in his presence, but you didn’t exactly think he was ugly. But being attractive wasn’t all it took to make you open up to him. A boy. Boys, of whom you knew you shouldn’t trust them ever again. Sometimes you felt yourself doubting your devotion when you stared at him. When he grinned slyly after having made a smooth remark towards you before he turned around in his seat, facing the teacher who had probably warned him about interrupting the lesson already. But you were strong-willed.
“Shut up,” you muttered at him under your breath, glancing at the clock in the corner of the class room. 5 minutes to go. You can do this. He grinned, not fazed by your comment. He had just showed you an actual screw he had brought from home. “Wanna screw?” had his exact words been. You had never been this done with anyone. Lucky for him, your teacher had no interest in warning his students for interrupting. Especially because no one was listening anymore when there were only 4 minutes of the lesson left.
“I admit, not my best one. Here’s another one,” he said. Oh boy, here we go again. “If I flip a coin, what are my chances of getting head?”
You wished in that exact moment you could slap his smirk off his face. Why did he have to sit in front of you? 3 minutes left.

And so he did. For the last minute, he turned around and shut up. You were almost impressed. Now and then you caught him taking a glimpse at the clock on the wall, eager to leave just like anyone else in the room. At the same time, you caught yourself staring at him. Black skinny jeans, deep blue sweater, some sneakers. Nothing out of the ordinary. His hair looked a little messy from where he ran his hand through it earlier (Not that you had noticed that, too). Then, the bell rang. Finally. Voices bubbled up and chairs scratched over the floor. You packed your bag just as he stood up, placing his own bag on his table. Rummaging through it, he pulled his phone out, checking the screen. A second later, his face darkened in concern.
“Crap. There’s something wrong with my phone,” he cursed. You were 900% ready to get out of this classroom, but being the good person you were, you worried at his genuinely stressed expression. When he was being normal for a minute, you couldn’t help but be polite.
“What is it?” you asked. He looked at you for a moment, then sighed.
“Your number isn’t in it,” he said, sounding completely serious. Was he for real?
“And that’s the way it should be,” you caught yourself. “I need my break from you when I’m at home.”
And with that, you left him standing. If you just had his determination and used it for school work, you’d have heavenly grades. You dragged your body home, feeling unusually tired. You didn’t have a big appetite, which was unusual, and couldn’t focus on anything.
The next day you were sick. You were sure it was nothing serious, but decided to stay at home either way. At least in your bed you would be left alone. No pick-up lines for a day seemed like a week of holidays to you. It was a Thursday filled with coughing, sipping hot tea and watching your favorite TV show. You felt better in the evening, but not exactly healthy.
The next day you walked into the kitchen. It was morning and you were ready to leave for school again. The second your mother heard the ugly cough leave your throat, though, she sent you straight back to bed. Fine, you thought. Even though you didn’t feel sick anymore, another day in bed surely wouldn’t hurt. It was Friday anyway, allowing you to be excited about the weekend already.
Around noon you decided to check your phone for messages from your friends. You were sure you had missed homework and other school stuff you didn’t exactly feel like dealing with. To your surprise, none of your friends had messaged you about homework. Instead, you found a text from an unknown number.

You knew your parents wouldn’t be at home all day, and praying that his would be, you said yes. So there was still a small chance you wouldn’t have to spend an entire afternoon in a house alone with him.
On Saturday afternoon you had thrown on a random sweater with some pants, your sneakers and left your house. When you pulled up in his driveway you instantly noticed the lack of cars. He’s not getting into my pants, you told yourself. Why did you even have to remind yourself? For some reason, you felt nervous.
He ripped the door open around two seconds after you had rang the bell. In surprise, you flinched. The way he leaned against the door frame and grinned smugly made you frustrated. And you hadn’t even entered the house.
“Come in,” he made a dramatic gesture behind him, waving you inside. It almost made you laugh. Almost.
“Okay, first of all, rules.” You entered the house and looked around.
“Rules? What is this? BDSM?” he asked. You rolled your eyes. He nodded his head towards the stairs and you followed him.
“Focus,” you said, making him chuckle even more. “No pick-up lines. We need to get stuff done if this needs to be finished by Monday. I really need a good grade on this. Smiths already hates me for no reason.”
“Do I really distract you that badly?” he asked, smirking and turning around to you. His hair was messy, but in a good-looking way. His collar bones peeked out from under his shirt. You guessed he did distract you a little.
“See? That’s what I meant. Keep those comments in. At least until we’re back at school,” you said, entering his room after him. It looked cozy, and like he had just cleaned up. You hadn’t expected him to be messy, but not this clean either.
“Oh, I’m sorry. That’s literally my character, if you haven’t noticed yet, sweetheart,” he said, sitting down at his table, smirking again.
“Sweetheart?” you asked in disbelief. You realized that he wouldn’t stop with his comments until you did. And because fighting wouldn’t get you anywhere, you decided to shut up and start working. Your topic was the most boring subject you had ever heard about, making it even more bothersome to research it. It had been at least three hours. He had kept quite calm throughout it all, but you still seemed to struggle to make progress. You had taken your space on the floor, leaning against his bed. Around you, pens and papers were sprawled across the floor while you bit your lip trying to figure out a structure for your presentation.
“I need a break,” he murmured quietly from his desk. You only hummed, your thoughts focused on the presentation. Your hand ran through your hair, sighing in stress. He cleared his throat, making you jump.
“Looks like you could need a break too,” he laughed. “I’m gonna get a glass of water. Do you want one as well?”
Still in concentration, you snapped out of your trance slowly. You got up while nodding, deciding he was right, for once.
You watched the back of his head as he walked. The work had made you sleepy and dizzy, a little as if you were drunk. Crazy thoughts flooded your brain all of a sudden. Your fingertips tickled at the thought of running your hands through his hair, down the nape of his neck. You had always loved his neck, you just never had admitted it. Shaking your head, you asked yourself what had suddenly gotten into you. All you hoped for was for the water to wake you up and let you focus again. You entered the kitchen.
You thanked him when he handed you a glass of cold water. After you had downed it, you still didn’t think clearer.
“I don’t think we’ll get to finish this today. My mom wants me to be home by eight for dinner,” you admitted. It was already half eight. “What are you doing tomorrow?”
For a moment he blinked at you, then he grinned. You already knew what that expression meant.
“I mean…hopefully you…,” he mumbled. When you playfully lifted your hand as if to smack him, he held up both hands in surrender and giggled. “Okay! I don’t have plans, alright?”
“That’s literally all you had to say,” you let out, shaking your head at him.
“Y/N. Be honest for once. You like my pick-up lines,” he urged you. You laughed ironically. “Deep down, you do.”
“You drive me insane,” you said.
“That wasn’t a no!” he yelled in success, putting down his glass. “Come on. What’s so bad about me? What wrong have I ever done to you?”
You were taken aback by his sudden question. What wrong had he done to you? He had never been rude, only his goofy, sex-obsessed self. You glanced at his face. His eyes were waiting for an answer, hands crossed above his chest.
“I’m just not very fond of boys after my ex cheated-” you began.
“Seriously? You compare me to your ex-boyfriend?” he asked, genuinely offended. It was true, he was nothing like your ex. Much funnier, to begin with.
“I’m not comparing you! I guess I just don’t want to get involved with a guy any time soon,” you admitted.
“It’s not like I want to get married to you!” he argued.
“Wow, thanks,” you laughed at his defensiveness. “What do you want, then?”
He tilted his head at your question as if saying “Are you serious?”. Suddenly, he took a step towards you, startling you. Your body backed up against the counter, hands gripping the hard material as he studied your face.
“You know exactly what I want,” he breathed out. His face was so close to yours, you could feel the air from his lungs on your skin. It made your heart beat restlessly. His hand went under your chin, as if telling you. It was you, he wanted. You waited for his lips, but they never touched yours. He was waiting for your reaction. You realized he wasn’t going to kiss you without your consent. The boy wasn’t just determined, he also had one hell lot of self-control. Unlike you.
You closed the space between the two of you, lips colliding. Kissing him felt like triggering an avalanche of built-up frustration and emotions that had only been waiting to break free. His hands grabbed your sides roughly. He finally had what he wanted. In agreement, he let out a low sound when you pushed your body against his, chests touching. “But you’ll come over again tomorrow, right?” he asked, hope in his look as he showed you the way to the door.

“Sure,” he grinned, rolling his eyes. For the first time, you couldn’t blame him for thinking about sex now.
“I mean it! We’re not even halfway through, especially the presentation is not even close to finishing. We still need to write the entire text and draw the map. It’ll never work out,” you suddenly started to worry. Tomorrow was your last day and you had to spend it working with a boy that was sexually frustrated because of you. “I’ll work on it tonight, maybe I get to finish it,” he said, completely calm.
“If you finish the project tonight I’m the princess of China,” you joked.

“Yeah, sure,” you said, already out the door. “Bye. See you tomorrow.”
The next day at 3 you left your house, your bag full of pens, books and paper. You remembered the way to his house perfectly, and pulled up in front of it 10 minutes later. You chewed on your lip nervously whilst waiting for the door to swing open. You had thought the feeling would’ve gone away by now. But no way. The second you laid eyes on him when he opened up, you wanted him even more than yesterday. His hair looked freshly done but you wished you could mess it up. His lips were parted slightly as his gaze ran over your figure. You hadn’t worn anything special, just casual clothes. Yet he eyed you as if he never wanted to look at anyone else. “Come on in,” he said, completely relaxed. Without words you followed him to his room. The half which had the bed looked practically untouched. The other half, however, was a tornado-like chaos. Various pens sprawled across all surfaces and paper with messy notes covered every surface.
“Told you,” he grinned proudly. You lifted your eyebrows when he carefully stepped over the paper maze and grabbed a stack of them. Proudly, he handed it to you. You couldn’t believe your eyes. While he watched you, your eyes scanned the text quickly, making sure it made sense. You had known he was smart, but not this smart. Suddenly you wished you could do all of your projects with him.
“You did this by yourself? Last night?” you asked, still surprised. He chuckled.
“Indeed. It took me until three in the morning, but it’s done now,” he said. “Not a big deal.”
“Why didn’t you work that hard yesterday when I was over?” you asked.
“Honestly? I wanted you to stay over longer,” he admitted. His determination was definitely out of control.
“And now you asked me to meet again. If you were finished anyway you didn’t need me to come over,” you noticed. Then you remembered his words from last evening. He wanted his reward. You caught him licking his lips and your stomach flipped. Quickly, you looked over the text in your hands again.
“Is this how badly you want to get into my pants?” you joked, gesturing to the paper.
„Actually I think I just discovered my love for the history of the Medieval and Modern Africa,“ he explained matter-of-factly. You laughed out, and at the sound his eyes crinkled up too.

He thought for a second.
„Sure, you could and I would. That sounds a lot like you’re saying yes, though,” he commented, smirking his famous, way too confident smile. He had never been more right and you knew it.
“Look. This one time, I’ll let you get away with it. But for the record, you can’t buy me with work. I’m only agreeing because I wa-” you started, holding up your finger. Suddenly, he walked over to you, grabbed your sides and attacked your mouth with his. You let out a surprised sound and stumbled backwards. You didn’t fall, though, because his grip on you was tight and after three chaotic steps your back hit the wall. There was no way for you to leave now, (not that you wanted to anyway) as his hands lay flat against the wall on your sides and he kissed you like his life depended on it.
He wasn’t doing anything particularly dominant, but the way he had you caged between the wall and his body and controlled the way you kissed him made your knees feel weak. Your previous boyfriend had made you feel good, but in a very sweet way. The boy that was all over you right now, however, seemed to not have the word vanilla in his vocabulary. You had no problem with him being rough. When you thought about it you let out a low whimper, to which he responded with a low growl.
“I’ve waited for so long, I thought I was gonna go insane,” he breathed against your lips as your chest heaved at the intensity of his kisses. You didn’t know how to speak anymore. Instead, you grabbed his neck and pulled him against you again. The way his tongue moved over yours made you wonder what else it could do to you. Involuntarily, your legs pressed together.
His hands were pulling your hair softly before moving downwards. Almost innocently they wandered over your chest, but you instantly arched your back, wanting more. They continued over your sides, holding you firmly by your hips. Then, they began lifting your top eagerly. You didn’t hesitate. It landed on the floor and meanwhile, he took off his own. “Don’t you wanna hear my pick-up line from earlier?” he asked. You almost smacked him. Then, you laughed.
“Okay, tell me,” you said, leaving him surprised. He was going to tell you anyway.
“People call me H/N, but you can call me tomorrow.”

how to weekend properly
assuming you guys have 2-day weekends. I know everyone has their own way of doing stuff, but here’s how I do it.
Friday (or the last day of your school week)
This is your chance to build up momentum. Get all the small stuff done, like
Review the day’s concepts
Catch up on class notes, or add things on (even if you’ve already been tested on the topic)
Any paperwork (forms, etc.)
Tidy up a little (ie., room, backpack, binders, clean water bottle, do laundry)
Contact people
Print out anything you need
I also like to get homework that you don’t really have to think about, done (ie., math homework, or any other sort of homework that’s not worth a lot)
Get ready for the weekend
If you have anything that’s due soon, now is the time to get started
Saturday
This is actually my busiest day of the week, since it’s the day where I get the big stuff done.
Projects, anything worth a lot of marks
Read ahead (this takes a lot of time for me)
Review the week’s concepts
Finish up Friday’s work if you haven’t already
Saturday is also the day when I finally let myself catch up on any shows or manga (if I did that on Friday, I wouldn’t get anything done!)

I went to get a boba smoothie. That has been the best part of my day cause I haven't been there in awhile and i like that place.
Is there something your looking forward too?
I am looking forward to a lot of things but I am very nervous about them. I am looking forward to them because they are great opportunities. Also looking forward to my family coming up because I am walking. That's all i can think of right now.
What is the most important thing that matters to you at the moment?
Graduating and surviving and surviving this term because it been crazy. Graduating and getting stuff together before graduating but i am not too concerned about getting a job right out of the gat.

I live with my roommate right now. Shes my bestfriend we moved out here together.  Two bedroom apartment. I have been slacking so its kinda dirty. Somes me and my roommate dont actually get time to talk to each other because of our schedules. I would love to change that actually eventually.
Is your living space organized to help you accomplish your tasks or goals, whatever they may be?
Its organized but probably not to the best of its potential. I can find things  where they are but sometimes I can’t find things.  I would say its like midway.

What kinds of chores did you do during childhood/teenage years?I did alot because my mom is a single mom and she was a fulltime intructor at our community college. So when we came home from school there would be all these chores to do. I had to sweep and mop everyday. My mom and grandma really like a clean space because thats how they grew up. It was never spotless but as long as we did our chores it was ok. Taking out the trash, feeding the dogs, hanging the clothes on the lines, pulling the clothes off lines, fixing the couch, vacuuming the carpet, watering plants.

Would you say you actively seek out new things to try?
I do try to seek them out it's just a matter of of going through with it. I do look for things but its like ‘do i have time to go and do it?’ I would say i do look for new opportunities, its just do i go though with them?
What are some of your goals for your daily life?
I really want to get healthier and i want to establish a more active lifestyle and a better diet. So thats been the goal for a long time o feel like cuz it hard especially as a student. You have a lot of stuff to do and no time to do it. That and also maintaining a cleaner environment cuz my room is quick to get messy, it gets disorganized easily and then i have to push it off. So i think like establishing habits that create a healthier environment for me and my body. So thats like my daily goal that i would like to accomplish.
What are some of your goals in general?
Career wise I really  want to try working at a small to medium studio that focuses on movie-making or like film. I want to try that environment. Maybe even get an internship. I wanna find a place where I want to work (like do research for where/companies I would like to work at)
What are some things that make you feel proud of yourself?
When people like the work that I do cuz i dont like the work i do a lot so it makes me proud when other people like it.
What activities give you the most satisfaction?
Cleaning, cuz it  feels nice to have it all finished afterwords. Having the kitchen all clean and stuff, that really satisfying for me. Also finishing a project and the product at the end is really satisfying. Maybe finishing a book.
What sort of things do you to relieve stress?
Mostly I watch lik shows or lay in bed reading fanfiction. Thats what i find myself doing the most. It really takes you out of daily life mindset, like surfing the internet or whatever. Its just very therapeutic
What is something you wish you had more time to do?
Work on my own art. I feel like i could probably make time to do that but its just really hard to do that. I feel like focusing more on learning the skills that I want to do. I have a lot of things on my list.
What kinds of things take up most of your time?
I think cleaning is a big one because sometime i leave things to the point where i need to clean it right now and at that point it takes a long time too clean it. That and schoolwork.

Freetime and doing the things I like , thats my main reward. And also food. I will tell myself that if I like stay up long enough to finish this work then i can go get mcDonalds or something. It probably not the best thing to do but its whats working for me right now.

I think I take alot of time for myself, especially since i don't like really going out and doing stuff outside of what i am doing now which is school. No time no energy

I am mostly just frustrated with myself when i don't utilize my time in a way i know i probably could have. Which is why i am such a procrastinator and leave thing to the last minute which is a big frustration. So i think my frustration is mostly myself

No. Like i was saying I dont do much. I am going to have to say no because i am a procrastinator so a balance is needed. I need that in my life.

The only consistent thing is class time. Feels like i dont have a consistant order of things. Dont feelm consistant at all. Part of what contributes to procrastination

Evening hours around 5 and beyond. I like to stay up late and feel the most awake at night uless i am really tired

Mostly google calendar, make lists of things i need to do.

Mostly big dates that include other people like my mom coming up for graduation or if i am going to meet up with someone. Really important dates that i cant forget, or even movie release dates that i really want to see. Big, big stuff that i have to remember

Only when i ave a list of things i have to do like homework. Dont keep track of things like if i have gone to the store

I think so. I want a routine but its just finding a way to do it...just establishing habits that create a routine, like maybe getting up at a certain time and going to bed at a certain time. I feel like it would add a stability

Definitely, like i watch videos. I have and i have tried some of them

Do you use technology for planning and/or reminders? If so, what are your favorite tools/programs.
I try to  but has trouble investing the time to put stuff in the app or bullet journal and maintain. Its hard to keep up with it. Time and laziness

Mostly instagram, youtube, calculator, spotify, netflix, hulu, dont really use my phone for other things besides those
If you could make a app for keeping track of a routine what would be some of the features you would want?
Customizable tasks and library of tasks, color coordinator, ability to print out a schedule, notifications to remind you.
Section for goals?
Yeah, I think that would be helpful, portion for short term and long term goals, ability to set aside time to work toward long term goals as well.

Forgetting and not wanting to do what i am notified to do, problems with motivation and willpower. Reward system to get motivation.

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃 🍂
Hi all! Speedles here again :) K wanted to write a post (she said she had nothing better to do, lols), so here it is! P.S. Please don't tell her if you like my posts better than hers ;)

[This was written during the last week of October. I hadn't had time to finish it until this week, and even though this is the October update, the topic happened to be quite Thanksgiving-y ^-^ So: HAPPY THANKSGIVING from the Hwangs!]
I'm currently sitting in bed with the lights off, writing a blog post. In bed, because I got cold. With the lights off, because I'm trying to save energy and/or I'm too lazy to get out of bed and turn them on. Probably both. Writing a blog post, because the internet is down and I therefore 1) can't send the emails I was going to send, 2) can't make dinner (recipes online), and 3) can't communicate with Daniel to ask why the internet is down because I haven't re-charged my data plan yet. Whew. Now we all know what's up.
What else is up? The sky, yes. But you know what ELSE is up?!?! FALL BREAK IS UP!!!! That's right, peeps: fall break is happening in T-minus five hours, which is a pretty spectacular fact as far as the Hwang household is concerned. The last thing that happens to be up is that this blog has been pretty un-informative as of late, so I'm trying to change that. October went by faster than probably any other month on current memory. I remember that at some point September sorta morphed its way into slightly cooler days and darker evenings, but by the time I actually checked the date it was already the 17th. Then I checked the date again and it was the 26th. And tomorrow, the 27th, is the first day of our very own week of break. We're pretty excited.
School has been a whirlwind, but of the fun, crazy, learn-a-ton sort. The program continues to be a perfect fit for D, which means he's loving the classes, loving the work, and always has lots to talk about with his professors and fellow classmates. However, he also has LOTS of homework. Our current schedule involves working until 3am most nights and then sleeping until 9am, possibly with some naps thrown in later on. I'm grateful to have lots of personal-project work as well as real (!) work to do, so we can hang out by working in the same room… just like college :P
I'm always amazed and humbled by God's provision for us over the past 2.5 years--it's a bit like one's birthday every week, seeing what sorts of things He'll bring along that you hadn't planned for. In the case of these last few months, we have been given a flat, jobs for both of us, food, health, safety, friends, spiritual encouragement, and gifts from some of you on top of that!
FLAT (D is still working on his blog post… but until then…)
The other day, D was commenting on the fact that God has been teaching us about the insignificance of our own work. Not, of course, in many ways, but specifically in relation to His work in our lives, whether that be salvation or finding us a place to live. We had asked Him for a flat, and had put in hours of emailing agencies and visiting possible places, but nothing panned out. When He brought us this current place, it was by no work of our own; instead, someone else had already done the calling, visiting, and talking with agents. Our flat is "practically perfect in every way": lots of space, a private bathroom for us, a sunny screened balcony, a big dining/entertaining area (including a ten-person set of china--plates, bowls, teacups, the whole nine yards), a kitchen with lots of counter space, and tons of storage in each room.
FINANCIAL PROVISION
Even when it seems impossible, God has always given us the money we need to pay bills, eat, and buy toilet paper each month. Most recently, we have been incredibly blessed by the generous gifts of family and friends, and are so grateful to receive that love.
Also: we got jobs! In October, D was contracted by a producer he works for regularly to write string arrangements for a Matt Papa album. It was a pretty crazy few days with very little sleep, but worth it. As for me, the tutoring company I was accepted at in September finally had some students for me, so I've been helping them with English reading, writing, and speaking for a few hours every week. However, because the job pays very well, I am able to spend the rest of my time keeping the house clean and making food… which takes a while, especially when you're trying to save money and therefore make like EVERYTHING from scratch :P Also when you don't have any small kitchen appliances and the oven only has a top element (this is a thing in Spain--I have no idea why?).
FOOD
Our working food budget is very small. It's a fun challenge (D might not be as quick to say so :P), but also discouraging at times. More than ever, we strive to faithfully live out Jesus' instructions to "not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink." And just in this past month, He has provided food for us in a multitude of ways: through gifts from family, through dinners hosted by friends, through our flatmates' leftovers, through good sales at the market, and through recipes that make a little go a long way.
HEALTH and SAFETY
We walk or ride the city bikes everywhere. It's great exercise, and so working out and commuting just happen at the same time, which is super. Despite all the pedestrians, cars, Vespas, motorcycles, and other cyclists, we have been protected from injury while commuting and otherwise traveling around the city. We have also been kept from sickness, despite a cold apartment, little sleep, and sick friends.
FRIENDS
First, HUGE shout-out to our family and friends from the States who Skype, chat, email and pray for us so often. Our stay here really would be impossible without your love and encouragement. Despite the time differences, we've been able to Skype friends often, and keep up with the goings-on in both our families. God has also provided us with good friends here in Valencia: at church, at En Vivo (the independent campus ministry), and at school. We also have two wonderful Christian flatmates who are interning at En Vivo until the end of December, as well as a Filipino friend from church who stays with us on the weekends.
SPIRITUAL ENCOURAGEMENT
We continue to be blessed by the ministry of our church, through the Word preached and through the community of fellow believers. Neither of us had the experience of finding and becoming part of a church in a totally new place before, but we have definitely seen how our Father brings His children together despite differences of culture, language, and worship style. It makes me excited for the total understanding and harmony that will exist in our collective adoration of Christ in heaven! I've also really enjoyed listening to sermons from our home church in Montana (Lolo Community for anyone interested; all the sermons are online) when I'm working by myself in the house.
We are thankful for these many and bountiful blessings from our Father, and thankful for you who exhibit and channel His love to us! I'm also especially thankful today (and during our time here) for His Word, which is CRAZY COOL you guys :D It is truly life-giving, so read it read it read it :D
