˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ Guide To Tone Tags ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚
Tone tags are little indicators people put at the end of a sentence or message to clarify the intent or feelings of that message ^-^ you’ve probably seen them before. They’re really helpful especially online because it can be difficult to tell the tone of something online through text, especially if you don’t know the person and their usual speaking habits.
Just as a note: please don’t use these ironically. It defeats the purpose of tone tags and can be very confusing for some people! Just leave the tone tag out if you’re being sarcastic about it.
♡ General Tone ♡
• /j - Joking - this message isn’t serious, it’s a joke.
• /hj - Half Joking - they are joking about something but they are also likely to do it or believe what they are saying. It’s a joke and it’s not serious, but there is a little bit of truth in it. (Usually this is in the form of exaggeration i.e. “I hate twitter/hj” means they don’t really hate twitter, they do dislike some aspects of it though)
• /s or /sarc - Sarcastic - they’re saying something that is opposite of what they actually mean or feel. (Sarcasm online is also represented a lot by using long words and random capitalization i.e. “I nEvEr Would HaVe KnoOoooooOOOWnnN” they mean this sarcastically - they knew).
• /srs - Serious - they really mean what they are saying, or what they’re saying is very important to them.
• /nsrs - Not Serious - they do not mean what they are saying or what they’re saying isn’t a big deal.
• /lh - Lighthearted - they don’t mean this too seriously, it’s for fun or generally well intentioned.
• /g or /gen - Genuine - what they are saying or offering is for real, they mean what they are saying sincerely, or they are actually asking for responses for a question - it’s not rhetorical.
• /nf - Not Forced - they’re asking for something but they’re not trying to pressure you or force you into doing it.
• /m -Metaphorically - what they’re saying isn’t literal or didn’t literally happen, they’re using this as a metaphor for a different situation.
• /li - Literally - the thing they are talking about actually for real happened or they believe it fully.
• /rt or /rh - Rhetorical Question - a question they don’t necessarily want responses to, it’s a statement posed as a question to make you think about the topic as opposed to actually asking for an answer.
• /hyp - Hyperbole - what they’re saying is extremely exaggerated for comedic effect or to stress something.
• /ex - Exaggeration - what they’re saying is somewhat exaggerated for comedic effect or to stress something.
• /pos - Positive - they mean this in a good way.
• /neg - Negative - they mean this in a bad way.
• /neu - Neutral - they don’t really have strong feelings on this or don’t really have an opinion on it.
♡ Feelings of the Author ♡
• /nm - Not Mad - they’re not mad about what they’re talking about
• /lu - A Little Upset - they’re a bit disappointed or sad or angry about what they’re talking about, but not too much.
• /p - Platonic - they mean this in a friendly way, they view you as a friend.
• /r - Romantic - they mean this in a romantic way, they view you as a love interest, crush, or partner.
♡ Intent of Message ♡
• /t - Teasing - they’re kidding around and teasing you, it’s not too serious.
• /th - Threat - this is an actual threat that they intent on following through with (I mostly see this one used ironically which irks me bc it defeats the entire purpose of using a tone tag so just be aware of that).
• /sx or /x - Sexual Intent - they mean this in a flirtatious and sexual way.
• /nsx or /ns - Non-Sexual Intent - they do not mean this in a sexual way, it’s more so platonic, joking, or lighthearted.
• /nbr - Not Being Rude - they’re not trying to be rude by saying this (note that this does not automatically mean what they’re saying is not rude, you can still be rude even if it’s not your intention to be).
♡ Who is Being Talked To or About ♡
• /nbh - Nobody Here - they’re not talking about anyone here (usually used in group chats or small communities).
• /nsb - Not Subtweeting - they’re not saying this as a vague response to anything or anyone, they’re just genuinely talking about it.
• /nay - Not At You - they’re not aiming what they’re talking about at you specifically.
• /ay - At You - they are specifically targeting what they’re saying for you.
♡ Where is This From / Miscellaneous ♡
• /ij - Inside Joke - it’s a joke but might only be understood by a small group of people. Don’t stress if you don’t get it or don’t understand what they’re talking about. Inside jokes are usually hard to explain to others.
• /ref - Reference - this is a reference to something else, usually a meme or piece of media.
• /ot - Off Topic - this is unrelated to what was being talked about before.
• /cb - Clickbait - usually this means the message is exaggerated or falsely advertised to get your attention. Often used in a lighthearted / joking manner.
• /f - Fake - the thing they’re tagging is not real. This is usually used for fake headlines or photos.
• /l or /ly - Lyrics - they’re reciting the lyrics of a song.
• /c -Copypasta - this is a copypasta, they copied it from somewhere else.

! "songs you actually listen to(?)" tag game !
rules: when you get this you have to put 5 songs you actually listen to, and post it! then, send this to 10 of your favorite followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool) < that is actually part of the rule i didn't make it up
tagged by: ilem aka @lovejoshua love how you tagged me but the tagging link doesn't work... it's very fortunate that i saw your post on my timeline
i'll do you all better... i'm doing 5 artists i'm currently listening to instead! and this will be full of tone indicators because people will get offended even by the minuscule things + because this is music i will freaking ramble so i'm sorry for the incoming long post
&team, specifically firework
this song is such a surprise for me and to be honest i hadn't even thought that hybe could make another good song for any other artists than newjeans /pretty srs. it has a bit of txt's thursday's child 80's vibe to it. it definitely makes much more sense than what the walmart twilight concept enhypen is doing /nm /criticism (believe me, i'm still stuck in the tamed-dashed era. also bring back the composer who makes given-taken pls /gen) i also want to give my two cents and say that i like the korean version better. i think this song was meant to be sung in korean before japanese imo
radiohead
what is 2023 lissie without radiohead? from creating and planning a 20-part anthology series based of their discography to buying my favorite albums of theirs on vinyl (which are the two albums that i plaster above), they've climbed up my ranks of favorite artists of all time. i choose jigsaw specifically because i rekindle my love of playing bass from that song and climbing up the walls because of the seonghwa fic i'm planning (it is exceptionally one of the most underappreciated songs in ok computer...)
billlie
they are the children of f(x) i'm telling you!!!!!!!!! just like how i consider the boyz as the children of exo and txt as the children of shinee. they are the siblings of 2016-2019 loona and gwsn. they are the product of sm ent's music prodigy sibling and i love them for that. they also are the junior of brown eyed girls, aka one of the most iconic kpop 2nd gen gg and the one that releases bops such as brave new world, kill bill, sign, and abracadabra! i love their discography so much and they have the potential to have one of the best kpop discographies in the industry alongside red velvet. i'll gatekeep them until the end along with onf because only people with taste can enjoy their songs /lh /gen aaaaaaaaaaa
triples aaa
the unit that could be if modhaus don't make such a strict rule because they disbanded for not having 100k album sold (womp womp) generation is such a high-quality debut track from a small company and dimension having their own versions within the subunits is a great concept. i mean, jaden jeong is the head of the 2016-2019 loona sound and i gotta have to appreciate him for picking good tracks man. their songs are also one of the bases of sound for my oc kpop group sound in @interactivemochi. also a discussion starter question: will modhaus actually be able to do the multi-unit many-member group that sm ent wanted with nct? i actually think they will because indie labels are more experimental than the big corporate ones (aka nct will be great with their infinite concept if they're committed and take those risks) just look at jaden jeong's print on onlyoneof and loona, they're pretty small but their fans are loyal af. yet, i'm merely just a casual listener of triples because they play around with nfts (and i am a biz student who doesn't like crypto and nft)
depeche mode and other new wave and 80s experimental musicians
when you have a gen z kid who likes older songs rather than new ones, they have to listen to new wave and synth-pop, specifically depeche mode. people usually associate them with post-punk along with talking heads, joy division, new order, kate bush etc and i can definitely agree. new wave is one of my favorite genres because of how experimental they are and it is exactly what depeche mode is doing + i love the resurgence of old brit bands like the shoegaze bands that includes slowdive, mbv, and siouxsie and the banshees
don't forget that this is meant to be 5 songs and i wanted to be extra because i can be extra *wink*
tagging: @ujunxverse (you could definitely do it on @/orochxi if you want), my fellow untag people from ilem's post @boba-beom @robin-obsessed, also others such as @dim-sun @tyunlatte @heart2beom @itz-yerin @txt-yaomi @talesofyuan @euphor1a + anyone who wanna join cuz i would love to hear new music :D

I know you probably didn't intend for me to reply to this but I will anyway because why not. This turned into half a novel but I hope you'll read it anyway, maybe even change your mind.
The reason you don't recognise these common tone indicators is... that you don't use tone indicators! I'm in many discords with a lot of neurodivergent ppl, a good portion of which is younger than me (because they're fandom based servers). We use tone indicators all the time and nobody bats an eye at them and if someone does indeed not know what one means... we ask. We literally just ask. It's that easy. Since tone indicators are usually used in real time chats, it really isn't that big a deal.
And if you truly are so socially anxious that you cannot ask the person you are already talking to a question (no offense if you are, we're all different) you can just look it up. "tone indicators list" brings up many results, I've linked one here to make it even easier, (although I do think that one should be updated slightly as, at the time of writing this, it does not have the increaingly popular "/ref" (indicating that something is a reference, eg to pop culture, one of my most used) nor does it have "/gq") and you can also search up the tone indicator without the slash in combination with the words "tone indicator" which will almost always yield an accurate answer within the first three results.
It's a bit like with anything but especially internet slang: the more you use it, the more familiar with it you get. You probably know what the (also frequently used by me) shortenings "ppl", "bc/cuz" or even "v" mean, right? You probably also know what "PS5", "USA" or "km" mean. That's because you've been in contact with them a lot. The same would eventually become true for tone indicators.
As to address two points from your tags: 1) sequences of letters can have more than one meaning (remember the "animal crossing did not attack air conditioners" post?) so even if you originally think "gq" stands for genderqueer, it can still stand for something else as a tone indicator and 2) there are actually multiple reasons you might use shorthand instead of writing everything out, including less time you have to spend typing and a shorter overall message resulting in better readability - plus, having it be short makes it more clear it's a tone indicator, not an alternative to something, since it follows a slash.
All of this "debate" reminds me a lot of when vine captions (and later video descriptions in general, image descriptions, etc) became more commonly used, btw. Like, a minority of disabled ppl is saying "hey, I actually really benefit from having this, could you provide it?" and many other people are coming in with "well I don't need it and also it's annoying" so there's a debate on whether you should provide said accomodation or not. And I hope that, like with captions before it, we eventually settle on providing it because I've had enough emotional turmoil due to not being able to read "tones" to last me a lifetime. (In fact I think we should even start using something akin to tone indicators irl but let's cross that bridge when we're done with this one.)
Finally, for your ultimate convenience, here are the meanings of the five tone indicators I mentioned in my original tags:
/s - sarcasm (or irony, since those are usually treated as synonymous in English). not to be confused with /srs (serious tone)
/j - joking tone or joke
/lh - light hearted tone
/gq - genuine question
/nm - not mad
(speaking of, this entire reply is nm. i genuinely am trying to explain, maybe even change your mind)
In conclusion, language evolves, things have multiple meanings and some people need accomodations. Thank you for your time 💜
PLEASE reblog for a bigger sample size! I know everyone says this, but my blog gets very little interaction, so any reblog helps!

Why is /j the tone indicator for joking when we've been using /jk for, like, two decades to the point that it has entered dialogue?
Seriously, I have heard people say something, get a sour look, and then respond, "Jay-kay!"
(Two decades b/c I know we were using /jk when I was in high school. And, yes, I know /jk stands for 'just kidding' but the tonal implications are basically the same as 'joking').
Many tone indicators are completely unintelligible and I have to look them up every time or just ignore them. But I can't say they're new because /jk's been around since high school and /s for sarcasm has been around since college (for me).
That someone would look at those and be like, what if we had more doesn't surprise me. I figure the most useful ones will persist while the majority will fall away into disuse.
People don't adopt memorize long lists unless necessary. They'll memorize what's useful to them, though.
/hj for half-joking is an interesting one for 'I'm not really serious but I'd still like a response' and I can kinda see myself using it in the future. /gen for genuine as a way to underscore yes, I really mean this could be useful, too. And I've definitely used /jk and /s over the past decades (though not tons).
But /srs (serious), /p (platonic), /r (romantic), /pos (positive connotations), /neg (negative connotations), /c (copypasta), /ly (lyrics), /lh (lighthearted), /nm (not mad), /t (teasing), /m (metaphorically), /rh (rhetorical question), /hyp (hyperbole), /th (threat) and the myriad more?
...I'm a control freak, but not that much of a control freak.
Some of these I could see being helpful if you're around people who constantly misinterpret you or are talking to strangers who have no idea who you are, but I typically talk to friends? Or to communities that give benefit of the doubt?
Tone indicators are not new, but they're not used all over the place because I think they undermine themselves to a bit. If I have to tell someone a statement is a joke, it probably isn't a very good or funny joke. Or the '/jk' is the punchline. And the only time I've used /s is when I know a statement is not immediately apparent as sarcasm or I know too many people have said something similar genuinely. Even then, though, it'd depend on where. And, honestly, I've learned to embed tone in my word choice.
I could say: "He's a great leader. /s" or I could say: "He's such a great leader."
For most people, the inclusion of the italicized 'such' will read as sarcasm. In print you have to go a bit more overboard with things.
Now I'm thinking about adverbs and how they weaken writing. They're so handy. "He ran down the track." vs "He ran rapidly down the track." Except, the better way to do that is to drop the adverb entirely and choose a better word for "ran" like "sprinted." "He sprinted down the track."
I wonder if tone indicators are like adverbs-- a way to improve clarity of meaning (because they can do that!) while also weakening writing and decreasing the need to think about the words you're using.
#tone indicators#this is not a super negative post#i'm just musing#also i'm irritated by /j#because /jk has been a thing for DECADES#seriously people#don't recreate the wheel

Tone Tags Masterlist
PT: Tone Tags Masterlist /end PT
Tone tag/Tone Indicators: symbols attached to a content to explicitly state the intonation/intent of it, especially when it may be otherwise ambiguous. Tone tags are used to explicitly state the author's intent, instead of leaving the content up to interpretation.
Tone tags may be placed at the end of a message, taking the form of a forward slash followed by an abbreviation of a relevant words. Alternatively, a more detailed textual description (ex: /friendly, caring about your well-being) may be used.
For example, /srs may be attached to the end of a message to indicate that the message is meant to be interpreted in a serious manner, as opposed to, for example, being a joke (which is commonly represented as /j).

Could you show me what all the tone indicators mean?? I haven't had the time to delve into them and I'm rather confused...
of course!
“tone indicators” means, well, an indication of your tone! since when we’re typing on the internet (especially to people we don’t know as well) it can be hard to understand if they’re mad or not since we can’t hear their tone of voice. these indicators inform us of the tone of voice so we’re not as confused!
here’s the ones i use and see used most often:
/lh - light-hearted, as in being jokey but still truthful
/j - joke/joking
/hj - half-joke/half-joking
/nm- not mad! as in, still truthful but not angry
/gen - genuine question or comment
/c - copypasta
/s - sarcasm! also a joke
/srs - serious, not joking
/pos - positive
/neg - negative
i hope that helps! <3

Was I in the wrong for this?
Ok so I would’ve posted this on reddit but in r/AmItheAsshole you aren’t allowed to post about stuff that has happened online so I’m asking here instead. So, I’m part of this discord server and there aren’t many people on it, (about 15 something people). So in this server there aren’t really moderators, just the server owner and their friend or something who is the only admin. So I was in a channel with two other people and made a joke about something, I thought they had gotten angry at me so I asked if they were genuinely upset, they both said no. So I say something like ‘Tone indicators, ever heard of them? /j /nm /lh) one responded with ‘We just said we weren’t mad.’ And I replied with something like ‘still, tone indicators.’ (I don’t know if this is important or not but people in that server do use tone indicators sometimes, not all the time though).
Then the admin showed up and told me something about how I was causing drama and that this was a drama free server, and how it was a soft warning and that next time they would tell the owner. I was already kind of angry from stuff that happened earlier and said ‘Warning? For what? Asking people to use tone indicators? You know what no I’m not doing this anymore, bye.’ and left. Later I got back on the server and what I saw was insanity. Firstly the admin had went into this sort of thing where they started saying things like ‘I’m sorry I made (insert my user name) leave.’ and other things like ‘I’m really sorry I’ll leave the server, I didn’t mean to upset (insert my user)’ and things like that, the two other users started begging them not to leave and then the admins friend showed up, the only context they seemed to have gotten was that I got upset with something the admin said.
They started blaming me and telling the admin shouldn’t leave because of my mistakes. And then they said that I just left to avoid drama and the other two started blaming me as well, they also called me immature and accused me of being underage(they were saying I was probably and 11 year old who lacked emotional maturity) Later the admin who was still being apologetic dm’d me saying how sorry they were. After seeing what was going on in the channel, I knew they’d all want me to apologize so I ended up apologizing to everyone but got no apology from anyone other then the admin who was apologizing for making me leave. It’s been a day or two and everyone just kinda forgot about it, but it still kinda bothers me, I feel like I’m still owed an apology for what they all said about me when I wasn’t there and putting all the blame on me (Not sure if I should be taking all the blame but if I do I still don’t think they should’ve said that stuff about me) I guess what I’m trying to ask is if I was in the wrong for starting all that drama and if a deserve and apology from the other people in the server. For any extra info just ask

hi my brain became self consious so uh ntoe:
if u want me to like, shoo, out of a conversation/s for one reason or another just strsight up tell me to scram because my ability to resd social cues is the equivalent to a concussed snail and my understanding of human emotion and connections is even less impressive. Don’t be scared to offend me, just tell me to shoo, no reasoning needed, just tell me to shoo. Just. say it in the most hlunt way possible if you want. Don’t deal w me just because you don’t wanna seem rude, just tell me to shoo sith a tonetag saying ur serious (because by defaukt i will assume ur joking give me that serious tonetag pls) and i shall. Dont be scared, tell me to shoo, no explaination needed. Im not gonna yell at u because you want my presence gone for one reason or another. Just tell me to shoo with that tasty tonetsg indicating ur serious n i will.
This isnt meant to be self deprecating or smth just like. a note. overall tell me ur uncomfy with a tonetsg indicating ur serious pls my social skills suck and sometimes i need someone to point it out for me
/gen /lh /nm /nbh (well technically everyone here but like, not in that way this wasn’t triggered by some certain person/event or smth, nobodies probably gonna read this but,, eh. also probably gonna pin this around bc like,, i dont have a intro so theres nothin takin up that space, + this seems important since i dont usually interact just with close friends, i just jump around to whatever i find ever mildly interesting and my tone with strangers i find is to the point where it seems like i consider you a close friend suddenly. i,, dont. thats jst how i act around literally anyone, i will threaten to bite a strangers ankles as i will threaten to bite a friends ankles, judt ill try to be nicer. Im still gonna bite ur ankles though. im not professional with anyone and i treat strangers like most people treat their friends: i dont treat strangers like i trreat friends, not really, but its easy to assume that imao,, if that makes any sense. OVERALL JUST BLOCK ME dont be scared, im not gonna make some weird callout post just because u decided that it was in your best interest to stop interaction with me. Just do what you must to keep urself confy and try to tell me you mean it please imao but you dont have to in those sorts of contexts where ur blocking me. If ur blocking me i’ll probably get the message.)

on tone indicators, (idk for sure if im nd but a lot of my immediate family are so do with that what you will), i mostly use /j, /s and /lh. I agree that /nm for 'not mad' and /nbh for 'nobody here' are too vague, and in those cases its probably better to just say the short phrase theyre already pretty obviously replacing. /j and /s come up often enough that it might actually help to have the shorter indicator instead of the full "im joking" or "thats sarcasm", and read less clunky to boot. But i also really like using /lh, 'cause honestly, conveying a light, casual tone online IS, to me, really complicated. I used to use emojis for it as much as possible, but emojis also get used sarcastically, and have semantic meanings (IE, crying laughing emoji being used as actually crying, or the smiling faintly emoji actually meaning hidden rage), or are too 'happy' for the casual tone im going for. And to try and incorporate this lightheartedness in text, at every post and sentence that want to say light heartedly, to attempt to convey that casualness id usually add by gesturing exageratedly or using a different tone of voice, in a way that is unlikely to be misunderstood, is just a lot more work (not to mention, still reliant on cultural meanings to the reader) than just putting a small /lh and being able to assume that people can know im being hyperbolic, or argueing in a friendly way, or whatever else (and if they dont know, they can just ask me what /lh means, instead of assuming that whatever i posted is meant literally/seriously/angrily). on the other hand, as you can see, this is very much written as someone who uses tone indicators because they relieve my anxiety over being potentially misunderstood, as opposed to needing them very much to parse online meanings myself, so there are probably things im missing from that angle.
That’s an interesting argument for /lh- emojis definitely have their issues as well (ie most of the sexual ones i alluded to are p metaphor/innuendo based, I just think they’ve reached a level of saturation that makes them easy to look up). I agree that putting the full statements instead of /j or /s would be obnoxious real quick-for writer and reader lol

Speaking of tone indicator stuff while I'm thinking abt it I just wanna clarify a bit of stuff about general boundaries regarding how people talk to us and this is only rly relevant for anyone who talks to me and talks to Archer since we're the only ones with accounts on here not counting the collective side one;
As I said in the tags in the reblog please use tone indicators, you really only need to use /j and /hj, /s, /lh, /nm, and maybe /g, friends don't need to use /p and /g for us because we'll know you're being genuine or that you're giving platonic affection (we will still use all tone indicators for others tho)
Please don't make like. Rude-humored jokes and put /j or /hj, it doesn't matter if you put the tone indicator our brain just overrides that and still feels uncomfortable with it, this especially goes for Archer, please just don't make rude sounding jokes towards knight (e.x. calling knight a coward even lightheartedly, any demeaning comments/jokes, basically anything that sounds mean even if it's a joke or not meant to be mean)
Don't make any suggestive or sexual remarks tbh towards either of us I mean I'm 14 you shouldn't be making any towards me anyway? And Archer isn't comfortable with people doing it even if kni's an adult, the only possible exception would be Cyrus since they're dating
That also includes calling either of us sexual terms of any kind (e.x. sexual pet names, words like "slut" or "whore", or anything with sexual connotation)
Not much of a problem but don't vent to us out of pocket, please ask first. If you're a friend we'll probably say you're free to vent and often offer saying "Hey you're free to come vent to me any time". In general people just need to ask first.
Be mindful of the fact that we're not good with responding in conversations
Similarly, don't try to spark up small talk too much? Generally don't try to have conversations with us, you can say stuff and we'll respond maybe going for a bit but don't expect full on convos ig and don't be looking for us to respond a whole lot to things because that stresses us out
Feel free to ask us about anything tbh and you can mention random stuff in our inboxes we really don't mind as long as it's not something we have blacklisted or detailed vents that you didn't ask to leave us first. You can ramble about interests or ask about something, Archer especially likes questions and stuff lol
Feel free to tag us in stuff as long as you're not tagging us in chains or tag games or real world stuff (we don't like those chains where you tag multiple people, they're just really spammy)
With vents if you are given a pass to vent to us you can vent about whatever as long as it's not in the blacklist however Archer is a lot better at handling triggering things because kni's mentally fucked anyway (/lh) so you can almost wholly ignore the blacklist if you're a friend venting as long as you're not talking about splitting or fusing but I doubt anyone would because those are system things. So if you need to talk to someone about something rather triggering, Archer is a good person to go to, and this isn't me speaking for knight, kni's mentioned before kni can handle things pretty well and you'd get the same thing from knight as you're getting from me rn
If you're curious about anything else that might be relevant feel free to ask abt it

okay so the lovely @imbicilite / @whitrph and i were talking and it gave me the idea and we thought it was a great idea to spread it around so here’s how it goes: when talking with someone about pretty much anything tbh, but especially for something that could potentially be triggering, communicate with color codes based on city traffic lights ! GREEN means it’s good to talk about these things and you’re not feeling triggered by the topic, YELLOW means to slow down or stop talking about the topic at for now while RED means to stop the conversation about the topic immediately until green again where the conversation can divert into another topic or they feel safe to talk about it again !! this is EXTREMELY important, because it’s a way to alert others that you’re going to be talking about something that could possibly upset someone because of the subject matter, especially for those who may get triggered by a certain topic - even without you realizing it because squicks and triggers can honestly be anything, it could be different words or phrases or certain topics - and can cause severe anxiety in those affected, even panic attacks or flashbacks, and because we want to be considerate and respectful towards one another, it’s important that we use these to help our friends and fellow rpers know that we’re going to be posting or talking about something they might not want to see or talk about, and it’s of utmost importance to make them feel safe, it’s best to use this to be a more supportive friend and a member of the rpc!!
on a sidenote, i’m also here to tell you about tone indicators !! keep in mind that i didn’t come up with nor invent the concept of tone tags itself, but it was being spread around for a while now and i’d figured i’d talk about it !! essentially, tone indicators are used to indicate if the person is joking, being serious, etc., neurodivergent people often have trouble conveying and understanding emotion and tone through written text, using tone indicators is really helpful for neurodivergent people to make it easier for them to read/convey, it is also very helpful for people with anxiety. i encourage anyone who reads this to also type the meaning of the tone tag ( i.e: i love you !! /p for platonic ), so it is more accessible for neurodivergent and disabled people, like those who use screen readers.
“why should we use tone tags?” one might ask, but as an autistic, disabled and otherwise neurodivergent person myself, sometimes i don’t always get my friends and fellow mutual’s tones by their message but when they use tone indicators, it helps me understand and, not to mention that it can be really helpful and avoid misunderstandings. i would also like to note that NOT ALL neurodivergent people want you to use tone indicators on them, so if they don’t want you to use tone tags on them, please respect their wishes.
“i don’t like tone tags!” one might add, well, okay... but don’t make fun of the people that use them, it’s not a big deal, and if you’re a neurotypical who insists on not using tone tags when a neurodivergent person clearly asked you to, get your head out of your ass.
“using /j at the end of a joke ruins it!!” one might bitch, and okay but... it might be ruined for you, but it still makes me laugh, personally, so please try and get used to it, and not to mention, what’s more important: making sure you’re clear with your tone so that there’s no misunderstandings or throwing a fit just because the joke’s ruined for you?
additionally, some other things to keep in mind !! please do not mock the use of tone tags, you may not need them but some people do, not everyone can tell when something is a joke, when someone’s either being platonic, romantic or sexual in intentions, etc.,, especially when there’s no visual cues or tones of voice to help us, just be nice about it, it’s... really not hard, man. if you don’t use a tone tag and someone reads the tone of your statement incorrectly, do not get upset with them or laugh at them for not getting it - that is perpetuating ableism and/or sanism, whether you intentionally intend it or not. just kindly clarify and next time, keep in mind that tone tags are very helpful for neurodivergent, disabled and people with anxiety disorders. using a tone tag isn’t an excuse to be mean either, you can’t just say something mean or not cool and then put /j ( “joking” ) after it to get away with it, don’t be an ass. if you’re saying something that could be anxiety inducing for others, i would highly recommend putting the tone tags at not only the end but also the beginning of that post. do not intentionally use tone tags incorrectly “as a joke”, to confuse people, etc., the entire point of tone tags is to clarify, not confuse people, if you intentionally use them incorrectly, you’re an ass. keep in mind that no one has to use all the tone tags, use what you’d like, respect others who use what they would like, use them however feels rights to you. for me personally, sometimes i use multiple, sometimes only one, or sometimes none at all, just do what feels right, depending on who i’m talking to and how long i’ve known this person or group of people i’m speaking to, it’ll be fine, and if someone asks for clarification on what you mean, that’s okay, kindly clarify for them. additionally, please be patient if people don’t know what tone tags are, someone might not even be aware of what they are and that’s not their fault, just patiently explain it to them or link them to a source !! education always helps !! please don’t use “/srs or serious” as a joke, some neurodivergent and/or disabled people don’t need you to use three tone tags, and in my case, i’m presuming you’re neurotypical if you’re doing that when conversing with me, but what i’m trying to say is it looks like you’re babying us neurodivergents / disabled folx, so try to use only two tags ( that is, if that person is okay with it !! ), because some people don’t need you to use three tags.
please note that the following aren’t every single example out there and there are different terminologies in different languages, but they are important, a few examples of these are:
“/j = joking / used when saying something in a joking manner, “so im pretty much the president of oreos /j”,
“/hj = half joking / used when saying something that’s kind of a joke but kind of serious / “well,,,,, im usually right /hj” /
“/s or /sarc / refers to the opposite of what you really want to say / “i just [clenches fists] love...... being sad..... /s”,
