It was sweet seeing Dot make friends with Botan by herself, especially since she initially didn't want to make any IRL friends at the beginning of the show. I always wanted her to make friends with someone outside of her usual group, just like how Liko has Ann as a school friend and how Roy got close to Nemo and befriended her. So it's quite significant seeing Dot branching out and making her own relationships. She was a bit awkward talking to Botan at first but they both have similar interests and Dot seemed excited to be able to talk about tech stuff with her (Liko and Roy don't really understand this kind of stuff and aren't into it, so it's not something Dot would talk about with them). And Dot was the one who suggested they exchange contact info and asked Botan to let her know if she learns anything about Agate, so she made the first step in trying to maintain contact and was proactive about it. Dot even thought she wouldn't be able to ask anything to Agate (when she suggested Botan ask Agate directly if she was curious about her, but they both said they were no good at this kind of thing because they are reserved and awkward), but she still actually managed to hold a conversation with her. She underestimated herself quite a bit there.

Also, it was really cute how Dot got excited about the monthly issues of the Occulture magazine. Kind of reminded me a bit about HZ042 when she was talking about how cool Irukaman is. I like seeing her have her own interests and hobbies outside her Gurumin stuff. Roy likes books too (he borrowed lots of picture books from Liko's father), so it's nice that Dot shares interests with her friends and that it's something she could talk about with them. She immediately shared the Scarlet Book stuff with Liko and Roy at the end, too.

Additionally, it was fun seeing Dot bond with Terapagos since it didn't happen much before. Terapagos is important to Liko, so I like that Dot gets close to Liko's Pokemon friends (kinda like how she noticed something was up with Nyarote in HZ051 and tried to push Liko to make up with her). Dot noticed that Terapagos seemed to like the drawing in the Scarlet Book too, she is paying attention to this kind of thing. It made me remember HZ033 a bit too. Because in that episode, Terapagos reacted strongly to both Liko and Roy being in danger (Liko and Roy were both reflected in Terapagos's eyes at some point) and transformed to protect Liko from danger. So I wonder if Dot will become one of Terapagos's motivations in the future if there is some trouble going on, now that Terapagos is getting close to her too.

I almost forgot to post this today. I've finally reached five more episodes to talk about. And aren't I so lucky that the big multi-parters haven't been broken up yet. Anyway, on to the "reviews":

Looking back on the year of episodes.

Just something I'm writing for fun now that the last episode of the year has aired. Basically, I'm just scrolling through this list of episodes and I'll write a thing or two about an ep that really stuck to my mind. I'm not aiming to write episodes notes all over again or to write something on every single ep that aired this year. Just picking out stuff.

HZ035: Liko describing how she saw Friede and Cap at the end of the episode was everything, ie they are her image of an ideal bond between trainer and Pokemon (Friede is the coolest).

HZ039: Kanuchan in general. Her and Dot both.

HZ040: It was already the case before that ep, but Nyahoja's backstory cemented her as my favorite Pokemon of the cast. Everything about her past and fear of abandonment, her personality and how it connects with Liko's personal arc was beautifully depicted. Liko and Nyahoja both learning to stop holding back (for different reasons) thanks to each other and finding solace and company with each other is everything. I'm glad Nyahoja got a whole episode explaining her past.

HZ042: Mighty G.

HZ043: The episode that made me really become invested in Sango's character. Also the episode that made me genuinely invested in Sango/Onyx (as a ship). Sango bragging about being cute around Onyx sure is a choice they made.

HZ044: Sango referring to Amethio as "bocchan". Spinel's everything. "Welcome, Professor Friede. I've been waiting for you." "I want to play with him [Friede] some more." Every time he talks, in fact.

HZ045: Friede and Amethio teaming up and working together like it was the most natural thing in the world. Amethio using Terastal. "Follow your own path, Soublades." Nyahoja evolving to respond to Liko's feelings. Amethio saving Liko.

HZ047: Sango failing to bake her cake made me think a lot about her potential backstory.

HZ050: Nanjamo and Dot!

HZ051: Liko being okay with pain if it's for her loved ones (Nyarote) was something (pls, cherish yourself more). Also, Nyarote taking care of her baby siblings was cute. I need more of them all as a team.

HZ054: Gibeon face reveal. Old man is hot. Also, Friede and Spinel in this ep. That ep was also really good in the way that it dealt with more modern and mature writing that can only be explored through older characters like Friede. (Him facing his past and apologizing for suddenly leaving the company was interesting and showcased that it was something that was weighing on his mind, etc. He doesn't exist in a vacuum and he could get where he is thanks to the people who've been supporting him, etc.)

HZ056: Liko, Kaede and Chili! Women supporting younger girls and helping them.

HZ062: Roy's flashback with his parents was cute.

HZ063: Grusha. Genuinely everything about Grusha and Liko. Liko's implementation test has been on my mind ever since it aired. The buildup and payoff with Grusha was really well-written, and I love what they did with Liko's implementation test (having her lose not because of a "fault" on her part as she genuinely performed well during the battle, yet not being up to Grusha's standards etc... the writing was nuanced and so good).

HZ064: Liko and Amethio facing off and eventually being stuck in a cave together. Most impactful thing to me, though, was Spinel and Blacky's relationship. I love their version of love. Which involves being willing to experiment the Rakurium for your trainer on Blacky's side, and trusting your partner enough to know she'll withstand the pain and not turn on you on Spinel's side. I love how much their dynamics stands out, yet makes so much sense for both characters. This ep made me reinterpret their dynamics in a very good way. (I love "unexpected" things, which make sense in retrospect once you think about them a bit more deeply. Blacky being a friendship evolution doesn't mean she isn't messy like Spinel, and I love that for both of them.)

HZ065: The AmeLiko ep. Liko and Amethio good. Good writing, good ep, good everything. Amethio being the one who pulled Liko out of her slump with his words was what I speculated about before the ep, and it happened naturally. Their heart-to-heart was beautiful stuff. "There are things you'll never know if you don't hear people out."

HZ066: Liko getting Grusha's acknowledgment and the way it was written felt so satisfying.

HZ067: Liko and Roy's bond. Also, Sango and Onyx sharing food was the one thing I wanted for both of them. I'm glad that the writing didn't turn Sango never getting the food she wants into a running gag, and actually let her eat something onscreen.

HZ069: Friede fanservice. Very thankful that they put him into that Kitakami outfit. More of this in the future, please.

HZ074 and HZ075: Lucius, Rystal, Gibeon. Everything about their tragedy, and their love.

Things that probably stood out the most to me this year.. if I had to pick five things. In chronological order. Nyahoja's backstory. Friede and Amethio teaming up. Liko's implementation test with Grusha and the entire writing around it. Liko and Amethio. The original Explorers story.

I enjoyed this year of episodes.

Going over monthly titles for December (from HZ076 to HZ078).

Short month in terms of episodes since we are only getting three of them because there is a break at the end of the year. Monthly calendar is here.

Starting with HZ076 (link here).

I don't have much to say about this one. They are going back to something more lighthearted, so the writer won't be one of the core ones. I didn't expect the RVT to have a former member, so I wonder how Sohdayo will interact with the others, especially Mollie since she is angry at him in the preview. The guy seems to be a journalist and also carries a camera with him in the preview, so I guess he has Entei information to provide, which will lead the group to go where Entei is?

A Landau-focused episode! I am not that thrilled about them going to a named city from one of the previous regions (that the old anime took place in), because I want them to avoid dangerous territory (such as potential references to game characters we've seen before, etc).. I had a hunch that Landau was from Asagi City though, since the Brave Asagi was originally his (which implied that he was from Johto since the Asagi is from the name of his hometown). But still, I hope they don't stick around too long in Johto.

We should learn a bit more about Landau though, which is bound to be fun! I feel like Kimiko Ueno could be the one writing this episode, since she wrote HZ042 which showed Mighty G. I wonder if Mighty G will make an appearance. He is shown in the current ending and the past episodes have revealed a bit more about Lucius so there is this theme of unraveling the truth about your heroes going on and secrets being revealed.. And Mighty G is a hero, so I wonder if Liko and the others will get to learn that Landau is Mighty G?

And the year ends with HZ078 (link here).

No summary, unlike the other two eps listed above.

A bit surprised that they are going to find Entei so soon after Basagiri. The opening updated and showed Entei along with Raikou and Suicune though, so I wonder if the other two will show up as well.. I am curious about this episode. Will it take place in Johto, and what will happen? Also since it shows a Hero Pokemon, who will be writing this ep?

I feel like Liko and the others will probably need more time to get Entei to join them? Like, Entei could end up running away and they'll have to follow him or something. No idea what could happen though.

Last year, the last episode we got in December was HZ034 which showed the Explorers so I wonder if they will appear this time as well. Or else, we'll have to wait until next year to see Amethio and the others again.

Once December ends, there will be potentially 13 episodes left for this chapter if there are no breaks from January until April. Which means around this amount of episodes to cover what is left to be shown in the opening and other storylines (more focus on the RVT? etc). We'll be heading into the second half of the chapter. So far, we have yet to see Sango and Onyx so I wonder what they are up to (having friendly lunch dates, I hope-). They'll also need to cover Spinel and Amethio, Friede, Omodaka, etc. I have no idea how they are going to go about it.. but I am curious and impatient to see the Explorers side of the story again.
