i’ll go first. my cat is deathly afraid of them. any time i change the trash bag—before i even shake it out and make big scary noises with it—he runs and hides as i just begin to pull a limp, un-inflated garbage bag out from under the sink.

as a DM- I really feel like if that is the level of bs you are dealing with, you should drop these players. i’ve had experiences before with players who do not want to engage/constantly derail and complain. it will drain you as a DM, it likely makes things less fun for any other players. you have a mind full of stories! and a lot of the joy of that is telling those stories with people who will engage wholeheartedly and respectfully and with eagerness in those stories!

it is not an impossible goal, it is one you should strive for. find players who will appreciate the considerable effort you are putting in (running a game is so much more work than playing in it) and will honor that time commitment and enjoy your work. @heedra’s ‘talk to them one last time and lay down firm lines’ is a solid, worthwhile idea as well.

thank you- you’re right, while it's kept me creatively competent to a degree, it's been emotionally draining for a large portion of the year. I’ve some reluctance to getting new players, cuz it seems like people I really jive with are hard to find / too busy. I worry that people who’ve played ttrpgs before would see how bad I am at DMing [this is also my current party’s first time with it so a lot of stuff flies over their head]. New players might be scary and take a while to find but I think it’d be worth it, and I could likely get more accurate feedback on stories if we’re all on the same wavelength

Now, I’m not really a drawsman so have some words instead!

The storm had come out of nowhere and caught Calassen completely off guard. 

The skies were clear when she’d begun her climb half a day earlier, but now the snow was falling so heavily that she could barely see a few feet ahead. She knew things had suddenly become much more dire than her originally planned casual day trip up the mountain. At this rate, there was no way she could safely climb back down, and because she hadn’t packed overnight gear there was likely no way she could survive unsheltered against the storm either.

Well, this is a pickle. Maybe even a predicament. Calassen knew her only hope now would be to find some semblance of shelter that she could potentially hole up in and ride out the storm. Fat chance of that up here, but maybe I’ll get lucky.

Well, so much for luck. Calassen was crouched and shivering, half hidden in the scant shelter offered by a small boulder, and doing what she could to block the worst of the wind with wings she’d stopped feeling an hour earlier. Pretty sure everything glowing blue is one of the last bits before freezing to death, right?

“C—s-en!”

And hearing things, I guess.

“Calassen please respond. Readings indicate your vital signs have dropped dangerously low but you are still conscious.”

Six? “-ii-?” Nailed it. Forcing her eyes open, she saw that the copper toned construct was indeed in front of her, busily assembling a small emergency shelter. “Six!”

“Please remain calm while I prepare the shelter. You are safe now.”

Calassen gathered what strength she had left and stood up. “You have no idea how good it is to see you! I thought I was a goner! I could just kiss you right now!” 

“That would not be advis-”

Six’s sentence was cut off as, true to her word, Calassen had closed the distance and planted a kiss on its armored forehead plating. It’s freezing temperature armored plating.

“Phix. Phix, I’m phtuck! PHIX! I fink my lipf froze to your armor. Phix help…”

“I attempted to warn you. De-icing protocols engaged, please wait. It may take several minutes for core heat to reach that particular protective plate.”

2. Their emotional/moral weak spots

Frostbite does not appreciate anyone talking rudely about his family. Not his mother, his father, and ESPECIALLY not his little sister. No matter that they are the leaders and he is an heir, he loves his family deeply and even if they were outsiders alone in frozen wastes he’d protect them. Luckily he’s very menacing looking, as long as he doesn’t talk.Speaking of, he gets very upset when dragons get bored or annoyed with him because he speaks so slowly (looking at you Kellam). He’s taught himself to speak in the shortest sentences he can, or just to speak more through gesture and facial expressions, so dragons will be more likely to listen to him.

14. Ingrained habits/forces of habit

Since he feeds off warmth due to his frozen body he tends to lean on or towards other dragons. His family and Borealis are used to it, but other dragons find it a bit off putting to have this big, freezing cold guardian suddenly learn up against them. Some because the sudden cold spooks them, others think he’s try to awkwardly flirt. Also, he sometimes ends up with his tail in the fire and doesn’t notice it until someone else in the clan screeches thinking he’s burning himself.

job: he claims to be a traveling merchant, but hes actually part of a mysterious rank of dragons called The Exalted, which have a higher status than normal exalted dragons and do personal tasks entrusted to them by their deity. zalen’s task was to map out the various clans and tribes and packs and such in the scarred wasteland before he got drug into the mess that is my plot

27. HIDE

His father wore golden bangles around his wrists. They clinked when he moved and caught the sun in a way nothing else could, almost as if they held some magic intrinsic and unique to them alone. He took them off only to polish them; sometimes, he attempted to polish them without taking them off.

For as long as he could remember, his father had worn them.“They belonged to someone special,” he had been told, when he was but a child reaching curiously for the shining, glimmering thing that had caught his fleeting attention. “They aren’t toys. Your namesake gave these to me. They’re sacred.”

“Sacred” was a word applied to the religious, the pure, the untouchable. It was for holy texts and artifacts the gods had bestowed upon their followers.

He supposed he understood why his father called them “sacred” now.

Now that he had seen him.

His father was polishing them again. No matter how often he polished them, he never seemed satisfied.

He deserves better, was what he was thinking. His son could read it in his face, in the way his brows furrowed and his mouth twisted.

He deserves better than smudges and fingerprints.

“Aba?”

“What is it, Junior?”

He hesitated and watched in silence. His father continued with his work.

“I’m going to Aphaster.”

The bangles clattered to the floor. His father looked up with wide eyes swimming with fear. His heart began to race.

“It’s time,” he said.

“No,” his father replied, “it is not.”

“I know you’re trying to protect me,” he said, “from rejection, from responsibility, from whatever cruel things they might say to me–but I owe them whatever I can give, even if that’s only an apology.”

He strode forward, knelt, and retrieved the bangles from the floor. Then he placed them tenderly in his father’s hands. “I won’t hide anymore,” he said. “I’m ready.”

- Cedarwood- Jasmine- Nag Champa- Sandalwood

I used the meanings here but also from personal experience, i enjoy these smells a lot!
