Legitimacy vs Selection Bias in Hypnosis
This has been on our mind a lot recently. It's mostly been sparked by the recent Mindless Banter podcast run by @theleeallure @enscenic and @hypno-sandwich where the three hosts spoke about how they dislike academic models of hypnosis and a recent post by @h-sleepingirl discussing why they herald hypnotic education.
One thing that is always going to be true about the advocates of our kink who have been involved with the community for a long time is that we are going to be experienced and capable hypnotists and/or hypnotees.
Likewise those who join and find themselves brought in to the fold tend to self-select; if a person is not able to find any success or joy in hypnosis because it's not working or they do not gel with the styles taught and practiced then they will not hang around.
This means that we have a functioning ecosystem of people who know the lingo, who are primed to react as they should and tend to have things work for them.
Which is great! It makes it so much easier to work out when everyone is on the same page.
But it also creates an insular community.
I've written before on why the insular nature of our community worries me.
One of the lines I wrote in that post was this
One of the big differences between the online erotic hypnosis community and the NGH (National Guild of Hypnotists) who rue our existence is that we do not require legitimacy to function when they themselves exist in a half-truth state where when receiving both of my certifications it was impressed that we needed to perform an uneasy dance of providing services without practicing medicine because hypnotherapy is not licensed psychology in the same was that chiropractors are not performing medicine.
Legitimacy is the idea of taking what we do, what we are, what we believe and what we practice and trying to make it valid to those outside of the community. It's performing studies, it's building a framework of hard rules, it's about pretending that we understand how the brain works beyond the anecdotal evidence that we witness it every day within our corners and communities.
Fact is, hypnosis is a malleable and belief-based practice that rests right in the middle between faith and science. As mentioned in the above linked post, trance can be detected on an EEG:
Source
Our last post on this topic just spoke about accepting that we exist in a soft science where what we believe, how we approach our beliefs and what ideas we allow to take root in our minds will have a firm impact on how the minds of the hypnotists and hypnotees we interact with.
Today I want to talk about why keeping the education and the science involved in the conversation is important.
Because, like the Mindless Banter crew, I have reached the point of my career in hypnoplay where should Dawn wish to induce a trance she need only find a partner, lay out what will happen and perform. The rest of it just happens.
Once you reach a level of confidence and community, it pretty much takes care of itself. The interaction between a hypnotist and a person who has never experienced trance before and the interaction between a hypnotist and an enthusiast will play out differently.
What I mean by this is if Dawn is approached in DM by someone who wants a session she will be able to pick up a number of tells without even noticing it on their confidence and experience. Someone shy, unsure and untrained will not dive straight in. Which makes the encounter less likely and even if it does happen it comes from the power dynamic of a teacher and student rather than two enthusiasts going to town.
This is normal and it's not a bad thing. It just means that the typical educator in the hypnokink community is typically aware of the "weight class" of their hypnotees which paints their expectations of how things will go and allows for a line between the way hypnosis is taught in 101 and how it is practiced in enthusiast circles.
It's why Progressive Muscle Relaxation is something which gets scoffed at a lot in our circles. The typical enthusiast does not need to spend 20 minutes on an induction when their typical partner is someone they can hold the shoulders of, stare at with intent and give permission for the hypnotee to drop.
That isn't to say that experienced hypnotists only play with experienced hypnotees. It just means that the majority of the play from those who educate does not match the material that we teach to beginners. Not a bad thing.
But it does breed this divide I mentioned. Between the experience of those who do this all the time and what is "academic".
So, besides helping new people into the community or playing in pure theoretical space, why must we keep the academic approach involved?
Well, first... the science does inform what we do. Yes, a lot of this is based on belief but there is a large amount of the science which is just fact no matter what we do. The neuroplasticity of traumatized brains is a topic we type about a lot given our dissociative disorder. I mentioned in my Dissociative Disorders and Hypnosis post that there are multiple studies that there's a higher hypnotic suggestibility in those with conditions that include dissociation as a symptom. The fact that this was being taught in a 101 class was why I made that post to begin with.
From my Mind Makes It Real post I mentioned that we need to be aware of the truths to keep ourselves in check. We should always be wondering "am I wrong?" about everything and the moment one lets go of the academic framework and commits to the loose ethos of "it just works" you lose a little bit of that footing and external perspective. We're an insular community and there's an element of "the popular ideas win out", not to stress a point too much but the whole hatred of the progressive muscle relaxation induction is a good example of this. I know a few community leaders who reflexively rant any time they hear it. These people have the ability to control the con schedule. They teach classes and part of their lesson is their personal disdain for that approach. This goes into the minds of those who were taught by that person and becomes part of the internal dogma. Suddenly you have a situation where a minority of people in the community need to defend the PMR.
I do not actually care too much about PMR but it really is one of the most accessible entry level trances and the disdain for it is a little gatekeepy, if I am being honest. I don't think any individual means for it to be something they keep out of the community but enough individuals following a trend creates a community concept, a widely held belief.
And hypnosis is entirely about widely held beliefs. Thus it is now a fact that PMR is boring and ineffective and there's more fun ways to do trance. That is an example, hopefully one that is understandable to an audience who are also into hypnokink (apologies to my non-hypnosis Tumblr followers, I hope if you're reading this you enjoy this peak into a little internet sub-culture).
Which brings me to legitimacy.
Do we really need it?
Hypnosis is both science and fantasy. A person attending a hypnokink convention could treat hypnosis with the technical skill and care that one would approach as ropeplay, learning all of the different terms and all of the safety procedures and treating it as a psychological version of what can be physically observed.
But you may also have someone who treats hypnosis as roleplay and improv with a framework not too dissimilar from a tabletop sourcebook for D/s shenanigans that they can learn and play within much the same as a D&D player can switch to World of Darkness. I guarantee there are a large number of people in the hypnosis community who do this and they're not wrong for doing it.
But as I mentioned above. Hypnosis is a scientifically observable phenomenon and it is dangerous if abused. Heaven knows I know that more than most. One must not believe in the dangers for them to be real. An immature hypnotist is a danger to a hypnotee regardless of if they think they are roleplaying or performing edgeplay. And the same is true for a hypnotee, too. If one believes it's all roleplay then their limits and safety will be at a different level than someone who is aware of the risks.
One need only look to the dark corners of our community where covert hypnosis is practiced eagerly, recruitment is a game and personality erasure is an aesthetic to know that there are uncomfortably large swaths who are practicing hypnosis from the perspective of fantasy. I do not want to pull out the news articles about how Disney Deer brainwashing ruined people's lives again.
The good news is that within the educator/convention going portion of the community we do teach this stuff. We do make everything clear. We're not currently in a community where academic approaches are shrugged off.
But it makes me uncomfortable when experienced educators in the community forget how far their words reach and dismiss the academic for the sake of "what works".
We do not need to seek legitimacy for the eyes of those outside of the community. We do not Demand To Be Taken Seriously. We have a community where people are welcome to join or not join. We do not need external legitimacy.
But we need internal legitimacy.
We need the people who practice within our care to know that they're practicing with dangerous tools that can and will mess a person up if treated without proper care.
Safety and education require we keep room for the academic and seek to legitimize what we do or those who look at hypnosis as pure fantasy will not be able to recognize the risk.
At least, that's my opinion.

@artzychic27 Hey Artzy, I got a big brained idea.
What if Riot was Marc’s split personality due to all the bullying? Like Dr Jekyll and Hyde (even though I never read book)?
Riot was sort of Marc’s… Protector
He first showed up when Marc was around the age of seven and he was being bullied for having two moms and leaning a bit towards the feminine side. After one cruel name too many, Marc sort of just snapped
During recess, he shoved a boy’s face in a mud puddle and held him under there until the teacher intervened
Then during gym, he threw a ball at a girl’s arm with enough force to break a few bones in her hand when she tried to catch it
And during lunch, he took a cup of ice from one of the drink dispensers and poured it down some other student’s pants
Penny and Alyssa took him to several doctors to figure out what was wrong so the school wouldn’t expel him and soon found a therapist who confirmed Marc has split-personality disorder
She sat with Marc for a while, and did a little hypnotherapy to coax his other personality out… He threw a lamp out the window
It took years of therapy and anger management, but they finally managed to get Riot (As Marc dubbed him) to mellow out a bit, and he stopped snarling at people
To Penny and Alyssa’s relief, Riot is extremely protective of Kiran, who understands to an extent of Marc’s disorder- Just that when he’s mad, his name is Riot
He mostly appears whenever Marc is extremely angry, which isn’t often… Cue Hawkass
Marc’s classmates are all aware of Riot. During their first year at DuPont, Riot made his appearance by ripping out one of the benches bolted to the floor in the courtyard and threatening to throw it at Chloé
Chloé demanded that Marc be arrested, but Damocles is honestly more afraid of Marc’s moms (And Riot) than the mayor and just tells her not to aggravate him
Chloé’s attempts to alienate Marc are met with no response because no one would ever listen to her, the students with disorders of their own just turn their noses up and walk off, and after seeing her almost crushed by a bench, they all decide just to never press Marc’s buttons
Now cue Reverser
Nathaniel doesn’t storm off because he realized he made a grave error and didn’t have any time to react when Riot lifted him up by the front of his shirt
Cue Hawkass and since Riot’s behind the wheel, Reverser is fucking shredded and has Riot’s flail
Let’s skip ⏭️
Marc and Nathaniel are dating, yay!
Riot still hates Nathaniel, though
When Nathaniel finds himself alone with Riot in Marc’s room one day, he apologizes to Riot for what he did to Marc months back, acknowledges that he cares for Marc, and say that he can bury him alive if he ever hurts Marc again
Riot’s response is a headbutt since he sucks at emotions, but they’re cool now
#If I got a detail wrong#let me know please#preferably someone who has split personality disorder#miraculous ladybug#miraculous#nathaniel kurtzberg#marc anciel#answered ask#ask me stuff#mlb au#marc x nathaniel#multiple personality disorder#split personality

if you're comfortable with sharing i would LOVE to know more details abt the highschool hypnosis scandal???!??
i don’t mind! (small town, huge school.) dropping the story below the cut; CW for discussions of suicide.
so, at my high school, the principal was an amateur hypnotist, and he used to offer brief hypnotherapy sessions to students who were stressed or struggling with schoolwork and personal stuff. it was not, like, super shady and something he did secretly; parents and other staff knew about it. he had been advised in the past by the school board that he should proceed with caution, but was never actually told not to do it.
what keeps this from being a funny florida man story is that, in my junior year, three students died in very quick succession. it so happened that all three of them had done hypnotherapy sessions with the principal.
one of them died in a car crash after a dentist appointment; questions about whether he had gotten any medication that might have affected his driving got immediately overshadowed by his girlfriend claiming that he had been doing the self-hypnosis the principal taught him to calm down after the appointment.
the other two committed suicide. both of them had well-documented stressors in their lives and previous struggles with mental health.
but the media - and the parents of the deceased students - decided that the hypnotherapy MUST have been a significant factor in all these deaths. it turned into a huge scandal. the principal got dismissed in disgrace. there were lawsuits.
it was a mess, and incredibly upsetting on every level to us students - if i still sound bitter about it, it is because i am. we had already lost a really beloved teacher in a freak accident earlier that year, and now, there were those dealing with the loss of a friend, or friends. those of us who did not personally know any of the kids were still really shaken up by all those deaths in such a short time. and, now, on top of it, the principal we all loved was getting railroaded about it. he had been there for years; he was really well-liked and really good at his job. he pulled us out of a truly embarrassing academic slump; he was a huge supporter of the arts and the theatre kids especially loved him for that. the seniors actually staged a walk-out to protest the fact that he would not be able to shake their hand at graduation that year.
anyway, as these things do, it blew over eventually. the parents got a settlement, which i - well. i will not say what i think of that. reasonable people can disagree on whether or not it was appropriate for a principal to be giving hypnotherapy to students - i personally think it is no different from, like, teaching them meditation, but i also see the point that, as he was an unlicensed amateur, he should not have been doing what was legally considered medical treatment. but the way it got sensationalized was horrible. it cost a decent guy his job and his reputation, and turned three untimely deaths into hysteria, and made a circus out of a whole semester for a bunch of teenagers who were just trying to make it through a hellish year.
#this is the second time in my academic career i have been mildly traumatized by the presence of news cameras at my school!#the first time was when my uncle sued the archdiocese i went to elementary school in!#;ask me your questions and get some answers.

Hypnosis and Sleep
Another deep dive, this time into the relationship between hypnosis and sleep.
Hypnosis, especially following suggestions in hypnosis, is mutually exclusive with sleep. It can work but it's very easy to wake up your partner from sleep, and while it's possible to go from sleep directly to hypnosis, this means that your partner is not sleeping… and your partner needs to sleep. If your partner is highly suggestible, then there are studies that show that highly suggestible people can be given suggestions while in stage 1 sleep, and will follow them with full waking amnesia. However, highly suggestible people follow suggestions just as well after a normal hypnotic induction, or indeed without any induction at all. People who are not highly suggestible do not become more suggestible in their sleep.
People do absorb information information in their sleep. There is implicit memory for words heard during sleep. Several studies support the notion that simpler forms of learning such as habituation and classical conditioning are possible during sleep, but this is extremely limited -- the research along the lines of associating bad smells, puffs of air, and recognizing repeated sections of white noise. It is implicit learning, but only just.
This doesn't stop people from some very dubious research, such as attempts to get boys to stop biting their nails by whispering to them in their bunks. There is a strong folk wisdom that hypnosleep is some powerful mythic backdoor into the mind, capable of reprogramming people. I think the reason for that is Dave Elman.
Elman has a chapter on hypnosleep in Hypnotherapy (1964), and it is almost entirely consent violations. It starts off with this anecdote of a man with a problem.
"When I enrolled as a student of Mr. Elman, I did it for only one purpose. I wanted to learn how to hypnotize my wife in her sleep and give her suggestions to make her stop picking on me and nagging me. Mr. Elman said I couldn't do it -- that I wouldn't be successful. I've been more than successful. I hypnotized her while she was sound asleep. She'd never let me hypnotize her while she was awake but I did it when she was asleep, and she didn't even know it. I talked to her unconscious mind-told her how much her picking and nagging was disturbing me, and suggested that she never do it again. She hasn't henpecked me for over a year, and I'm very proud to say that as a result I've been much happier. And maybe she has been much happier."
Elman claims that hypnosleep provided "better anesthesia than was possible with the Esdaile state of hypnosis" but his experiments involve telling people in his class to sleep with posthypnotic suggestions, which... took three hours to become effective? I think they just took a nap while people talked to them.
After struggling with that, Elman stuck with reinduction triggers, and said the results were spectacular. But he doesn't elaborate. There's no evidence that doing this is any more effective than regular hypnosis, and good reason to think it would be less effective and may lead to impaired sleep and a very grumpy partner.
Du magnetisme animal en France (1826) and De la suggestion et des ses applications a la therapeutique (1886) establish that a sleeping person can be given hypnotic suggestions and will remain asleep.
Around 1953, EEG was used to determine hypnosis and determined that whatever hypnosis was, it wasn't sleep (Krakora, 1953; Heiman & Spoerri, 1953).
T.X. Barber attempts to split the difference in “Sleep” and “Hypnosis”: A reappraisal (1956), saying that hypnosis may not be deep sleep, but might involve a state of light sleep.
Barber's Comparison of Suggestibility during "Light Sleep" and Hypnosis (1956), later written up as Experiments in Hypnosis (1957) goes more into the concept of suggestions during sleep. Barber approaches the subject and whispers "Clasp your hands together." Out of 22 subjects, twelve responded as if they were in some stage of hypnosis. There were no significant differences between responses between "light sleep" and after a hypnotic induction, but no EEG was used to determine the level of sleep. This is one of the rare studies that has pictures and is written for Scientific American so it's very casual.
Trance induction under unusual circumstances (1964) mentions specifically some cases where people are brought into a state of hypnosis directly from sleep.
The literature pertaining to when a person can or cannot be hypnotized is conflicting. [...] Kroger (1963) and Fresacher (1951) also mention the possibility of hypnotizing persons without their knowledge or consent by leading them from natural sleep to the trance state.
This is also a fun read, with a bunch of case reports.
Cobb and Evans start to dig into the details. Specific Motor Response during Sleep to Sleep-Administered Meaningful Suggestion: An Exploratory Investigation (1965) calls Barber's study into question.
While the recent study of Barber (1956) reported that suggestions during sleep were successfully responded to during sleep, no objective criteria, such as EEG, of the presence of sleep were used. The interpretation that Ss remain asleep during such suggestions, however, is called into question by a more recent study by Borlone, Dittborn, and Palestini (1960) employing EEG monitoring. In their investigation of the induction of sleep by direct suggestion and repetitive stimulation, these investigators reported the successful induction of EEG sleep patterns showing theta waves, and in one instance delta activity. They reported that such induced sleep could be turned into hypnosis by appropriate suggestions, but during verbal interactions between E and S, EEG patterns with waking alpha activity were shown, even though S had been instructed that he would remain asleep throughout.
and reports success only with highly hypnotizable subjects in stage 1 sleep.
All 4 highly hypnotizable Ss did respond behaviorally to the sleep-administered verbal suggestion and remained physiologically asleep. However, this only occurred when the suggestion was administered in emergent Stage 1 sleep. [...] All 4 low hypnotizable Ss failed to respond behaviorally to the sleep-administered verbal suggestion.
The short paper Response during sleep with intervening waking amnesia (1966) expanded into Verbally induced behavioral responses during sleep (1970) showed that in some high suggestible subjects, a verbal suggestion given during sleep can still be effective five months later.
This study explored the possibility of eliciting motor responses from sleeping Ss. Nineteen Ss slept in the laboratory for 2 nights. Some Ss responded behaviorally, while remaining asleep, to verbal suggestions which had been administered previously during stage 1 sleep. Many responses were obtained without eliciting alpha activity during the suggestion, after the cue word was administered, or before and after the response. When a successful response occurred, alpha frequency was not significantly different from the slowed frequency occurring spontaneously during stage 1 sleep. The average response latency was 32 seconds, and this increased as the temporal dissociation between the administration of the suggestion and the cue word increased. After the S awakened, he did not remember the verbally presented material, nor could he remember responding, and he did not respond to the cue word while awake. When S returned to sleep the next night, or even 5 months later [emphasis added], the mere repetition of the relevant cue word (without repetition of the suggestion itself) was sufficient to elicit the appropriate response. It is concluded that a subject is capable of some interaction with his environment while he is asleep.
The 1965 paper had a very small sample size, so a similar study with better design is Sleep-induced behavioral response. Relationship to susceptibility to hypnosis and laboratory sleep patterns (1969), which found that people are prone to waking up during suggestions.
A complex relationship was found among the frequency of sleep-induced response, susceptibility to hypnosis, and how well the S slept. Insusceptible Ss were less likely to respond while asleep and had less opportunity to respond because they awakened when cue words were presented. They had also reported that they were poor sleepers outside of the laboratory situation. Response to sleep-induced suggestions was not correlated with waking motor suggestion, nor with hypnotic passive and challenge suggestion. Rather, sleep response rate was significantly related to hallucinatory and posthypnotic clusters of hypnotic behavior (which can be experienced only by deeply hypnotized Ss), particularly with responses obtained when there was temporal dissociation between the suggestion and the cue word.
There's another study from Evans which I cannot get hold of, Hypnosis and Sleep: Techniques for Exploring Cognitive Activity During Sleep (1972). Evans shows up in multiple places in hypnotic amnesia, antisocial suggestions, and so on. If there's an odd factoid about hypnosis, Evans was probably involved in it somehow. From his obit:
A study performed with William Orchard suggested that sleep learning might be possible after all, so long as the learning is characterized as semantic, or perhaps implicit, in nature. A more extensive (and controversial) series of studies explored the possibility that subjects could respond to hypnosis-like behavioral suggestions while remaining asleep. Taken together, these studies can be viewed as pioneering attempts to explore the role of sleep in learning and memory.
I also cannot find the Orchard study. Please reblog/comment if you see it.
Kratochvil publishes Prolonged Hypnosis and Sleep (1970), which attempts to keep people hypnotized through several sleep cycles.
The author demonstrates the possibility of developing prolonged hypnosis of a waking type, ranging from 16 hours to 7 days, with preserved normal waking-sleep rhythms. Persisting rapport, duration of a prearranged distorted reaction to date-questioning, and subsequent total amnesia were taken as criteria for prolonged hypnosis. They were met by five of ten trained, highly susceptible Ss. Normal sleep can apparently occur parallel with hypnosis, without interfering with it. Implications for a theory of hypnosis are discussed.
The study hypothesizes that the subjects may immediately enter waking hypnosis on waking.
One question is: Are the Ss really hypnotized while asleep? An alternative hypothesis is that they are in normal sleep (not hypnotized), but re-enter hypnosis immediately upon awakening, according to an implicit posthypnotic suggestion.
Sleep in Hypnosis: A Pilot EEG Study (1972) asks "can a person sleep in hypnosis and awake hypnotized, and react to suggestions while asleep?"
Six highly susceptible Ss were hypnotized and allowed to sleep in the laboratory during the night. Hypnotic rapport was tested after each of two awakenings, and simple suggestions were also administered in different stages of sleep. After awakening, hypnotic rapport was still present. In sleep, the Ss did not react to suggestions in stages 3 and 4. They sometimes reacted in stage 2, but usually woke up either during listening or during responding to the suggestion. In stage REM the Ss usually responded well to the suggestions; they sometimes woke up and sometimes not. The results are taken as a proof that hypnosis can continue after periods of sleep which occur during hypnosis. The question whether hypnosis and sleep can occur simultaneously or only alternately is discussed.
And the study establishes that you really have to be awake to follow suggestions.
Hypnotic phenomena evidently work better if the EEG shows a waking pattern. As long as sleep stages are on the record, the possibility for responding to suggestions is considerably limited. The S necessarily tends to wake up fully, if he is to demonstrate typical phenomena of deep hypnosis. These findings favor the explanation that hypnosis and sleep are interfering processes rather than processes that could coexist independently.
Hoskovec identified some Russian research in Recent Literature in Hypnosis from the European Socialist Countries (1966). The paper is by Svyadoshch (also spelled as "Sviadoshch"): Sviadoshch, A. M. Vospriiatie i zapominanie rechi vo vremia estestvennogo ma. (Reproduction and memorization of speech in natural sleep.) Vopr. psikhol., 1962, 8, 1, 65-80. Cooper and Hoskovec tried to replicate this study in Hypnotic Suggestions for Learning during Stage I REM Sleep (1972).
Eleven highly hypnotically susceptible XS participated in a sleep-learning experiment which involved sleeping in the laboratory on two successive nights. The first night served as an adaptation period, and the second, an experimental period. Ten simple Russian-English word pairs were learned in the waking state upon awakening from the adaption night. Prior to going to sleep on the experimental night, the Ss were hypnotized, and given suggestions to perceive and remember the words to be presented. A second list of ten Russian-English word pairs were presented during emergent Stage I REM sleep monitored electroencephalographically and electromyographically. It was found that the 8s learned an average of 90% of the material presented under the waking condition, but only an average of 30% under the Stage I REM sleep. It was concluded that learning during sleep as here defined was possible but not practical.
Evans follows up with Hypnosis and Sleep: the Control of Altered States of Awareness (1977) which is about napping.
[...] it does appear that hypnotizable subjects have the ability to fall asleep easily and in a wide variety of circumstances. While this finding does not imply any basic similarity of sleep and hypnosis, it does indicate that there may be a common underlying mechanism involved in the capacity to experience hypnosis and the ability to fall asleep easily and maintain control of basic sleep processes.
Finally there is one last paper from Evans, Behavioral responses during sleep (1990). I do not have this, but it does not appear significant.

Home School 14 spoilers
So I just caught up on Home School and ahhhh, they did the one thing I was most fearing. The Sky Castle thing, where you have an untenable and fucked up system that uncannily if exaggeratedly resembles the untenable and fucked up systems of our real world, and then one character is actually to blame for all of it, doing things for cartoonish, individual-backstory-having reasons, and all the other enforcers of the system escape culpability by comparison.
Like, I don't think the other masters completely escape culpability, not when the good OTP Dilak/Praeporn seem to be the only ones actively resisting what's been happening, but it's still an ughhh way of making their behavior seem less terrible without actual change or growth. Plus, I try to stay in my lane and not comment on colorism, so apologies if this is overstepping, but everything about Prasath's portrayal already felt pretty uncomfortable, and it just got so much worse.
I'll wait to see where the last four episodes go, but if I'm actually supposed to believe Amin started this school for good reasons and it was a good and loving place that helped orphans by hypnotizing them into normativity so their rich parents wanted them again I'm gonna... /shakes fist! And tbf his whole plan was never actually that, it was always using that (still probably fucked curriculum!!) as a cover for his revenge on society, but using desperate kids as his child soldiers was deeply fucked even before it became a violent revenge!!
But I'll see where it goes. In the clips the students watched of Run & Putha, Run seemed like an active and informed participant in the hypnotherapy. I still 100% do not think any of this is okay when done to desperate kids you're telling you will love in their shitty parents' stead, particularly if any of the curriculum was compliance-based beforehand, but it's significantly less evil to teach the kids what for example Headmaster Yani was doing with the girls, that society sucks and you deserve better, and enforce their confidence w/ hypnotherapy in ways they know about going in and are on board with, than to brainwash them while they're out into becoming your sleeper disruptors.
I just hate in stories like this when the drama and suspense and twists and turns are privileged over the potentially juicy and salient social commentary; it's a much more impactful story imo if Amin started something with good intentions that was terrible from the beginning. If, just as Bodin passed down his father's abuse, Amin passed down Bodin's power and control over him onto the children he now had power over.
That said, I still love all the kids, look forward to Maki and Run's reunion, and find Amin/Bodin very very juicy. Imo:
#haven't edited this post be gentle w/ me just yeeting thoughts out there to exorcise them from my mind#home school the series#home school spoilers

*Guruji is good at puja, yoga and spiritual guidance. How can a spiritual guru help kids with success in life ?*
------------------
We already started 2024 Child Foundation class with 100+ kids. Got a query from a member on how we can take that course.
------------------
Guruji is a gold medalist in Engineering, has topped in Management Studies, has advanced degree in Law and also advanced degree in psychology. He has excelled in academics. Guruji is also a successful professional, working in leadership role in a top firm in India, with presence across globe. The firm is a leader in industry for 40+ years, with more than 3 lakh employees. Guruji is the sole inventor of first granted US patent of this firm, which is a historical milestone for the firm. With several patents, authored books, research papers, and chair role in leading conferences he has established a mark in professional life as well, much beyond just a role in the firm. On family life, he is living a happy life with wife and two kids. Wife has also got Srividya poorna diksha, and both kids doing well in studies, puja, yoga, music, martial arts and several other areas. On Spiritual side as well, he is not limited to just tantra and yoga, he is also a reiki master, advanced level pranic healer, several certifications in hypnotherapy and proper learning and understanding on several philosophies and sampradayas under different qualified Gurus. His grip on Astrology, Vaastu, Siddha and several spiritual topics is well known to his students across the globe, and Guru linage in these topics is mentioned in Svtp website. In addition to this, it is not just advanced degree in psychology, he also have several research publications and certifications on psychology, similar to achievements in management and engineering. Most of the people you can get for helping your kid is - counseling from a person having a degree or online certification, or might just be a healer to give positivity, or may be just a spiritual instructor to teach some topic or just a motivational speaker who can motivate. This is no match to Guruji who has been exceptional in academics, work, presentation, research, innovation, spiritual guidance, counseling, consulting, family life, and almost every aspect he has handled. *It is almost impossible to find someone more qualified to help your kid achieve all round success in life.* So parents and kids who miss this opportunity of foundation course for kids are at a major loss.

Hypnotherapy for Students: Boost Your Focus and Build Better Study Habits
Are you struggling to stay focused during study sessions or finding it hard to break bad habits like procrastination? You're not alone. Staying on track can feel impossible with many distractions, from social media to constant notifications. That’s where hypnotherapy comes in. It’s an increasingly popular tool for students looking to sharpen their focus, reduce stress, and develop better study habits without the struggle of endless to-do lists or overwhelming pressure.
Why Students Struggle with Focus and Study Habits
Maintaining focus can be challenging as a student, especially when juggling coursework, assignments, and exams. Here are some of the common reasons students find it difficult to concentrate:
Distractions Everywhere: Between your phone buzzing, social media updates, and chatty friends, staying focused can be a struggle.
Procrastination: You know you should study, but somehow, the urge to watch one more episode or recheck Instagram takes over.
Lack of Motivation: Sometimes, the pressure of deadlines or complex subjects can zap all motivation, making studying feel like a chore.
Stress and Anxiety: Worrying about grades, prospects, or the workload can make it hard to focus on the present moment.
Poor Time Management: Study sessions can become ineffective without proper planning, leading to last-minute cramming and burnout.
Hypnotherapy can address these issues by helping students change their mindset and develop strategies for more productive studying.
How Hypnotherapy Can Improve Focus
Hypnotherapy works by accessing the subconscious mind, where many habits and behaviours are rooted. Addressing the mental blocks that prevent them from focusing can help students unlock their full potential.
Reducing Mental Clutter: Hypnotherapy helps quiet the noise in your mind, allowing you to concentrate better. It works by guiding you into a relaxed state where you can let go of distractions and focus entirely on the task.
Improving Concentration: By reinforcing positive beliefs, hypnotherapy can train your mind to stay present and focused for extended periods. You’ll find it easier to concentrate during study sessions and less likely to be distracted by external factors.
Strengthening Willpower: Struggling to resist the temptation of social media or procrastinating? Hypnotherapy can help improve your willpower, making it easier to stick to your study schedule and avoid distractions.
Boosting Memory Retention: Hypnotherapy doesn’t just improve focus; it can also help with memory retention by enhancing your ability to absorb and recall information. This is particularly useful for students preparing for exams.
How Hypnotherapy Enhances Study Habits
Consistent study habits are essential for academic success, but sticking to a routine can be difficult. Hypnotherapy offers practical ways to establish lasting good habits.
Building a Positive Routine: Hypnotherapy can help you create a consistent study routine that feels natural and achievable. It works by rewiring the brain to associate studying with positive outcomes rather than stress or boredom.
Breaking Procrastination Cycles: By tapping into your subconscious mind, hypnotherapy can address the underlying reasons for procrastination, helping you feel more motivated to get started and stick with your tasks.
Increasing Motivation: Hypnotherapy can help you visualise your goals and feel more connected to the benefits of studying. This makes it easier to stay motivated, even when faced with challenging subjects or long hours of work.
Improving Time Management: Good study habits are closely linked to time management. Hypnotherapy can help you prioritise tasks, plan more effectively, and avoid last-minute cramming, leading to more balanced and efficient study sessions.
Managing Stress and Test Anxiety with Hypnotherapy
Exams and deadlines often bring stress and anxiety, which can hinder performance. Hypnotherapy provides a way to manage these feelings, helping students stay calm and confident, even in high-pressure situations.
Reducing Exam Nerves: Hypnotherapy can teach you how to stay calm under pressure by using relaxation techniques to manage your nerves before and during exams.
Developing a Positive Mindset: By encouraging positive thinking, hypnotherapy can help you confidently approach exams and assignments rather than fearfully. This mental shift can lead to improved performance.
Learning Relaxation Techniques: Hypnotherapy introduces methods for deep relaxation, which can be used before exams or during study breaks to keep stress levels in check. Staying relaxed helps you think more clearly and recall information more effectively.
Enhancing Mental Resilience: Hypnotherapy builds resilience by helping you adopt a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as opportunities to learn rather than threats. This approach makes it easier to bounce back from setbacks and stay motivated.
How to Use Hypnotherapy for Study Success
Hypnotherapy isn’t just a one-time solution; you can incorporate it into your daily study routine. Here’s how:
Attend Hypnotherapy Sessions: Whether with a professional hypnotherapist or through self-hypnosis recordings, regular sessions can help you develop and reinforce better study habits.
Daily Practice: Consistency is critical. Just like building muscle, training your brain requires regular practice. Set aside a few minutes daily to practise relaxation techniques and focus exercises.
Visualise Success: Use visualisation to picture yourself succeeding in your studies. Imagine completing assignments, taking exams, and feeling proud of your accomplishments. This can boost motivation and focus.
Combine Hypnotherapy with Other Strategies: Hypnotherapy works well when paired with other study strategies, such as using a study timetable, setting specific goals, and taking regular breaks.
Does Hypnotherapy Work for All Students?
Hypnotherapy can be a helpful tool for many students, but like any approach, its effectiveness varies from person to person. Those open to the process and committed to practising the techniques will likely see positive results. Whether you struggle with procrastination, stress, or focus, hypnotherapy offers a different perspective and can be tailored to your needs.
Ready to Boost Your Study Success?
Hypnotherapy gives students the mental tools to stay focused, manage stress, and build better study habits. If you’ve struggled with procrastination, distractions, or anxiety around exams, this method could be what you need to regain control and boost your academic performance. Why not give it a try? Share your experiences, tips, and thoughts in the comments below, and don’t forget to like and share this guide with others who might benefit from a new study approach.
FAQ
Can hypnotherapy help with long-term study habits, or is it only for short-term focus?
Hypnotherapy can help with both short-term focus and long-term habit formation. It works by addressing underlying behaviours and helping you build a sustainable routine that fits your academic goals.
How soon can I expect to see improvements in my study habits?
While some students notice improvements after just a few sessions, it often depends on individual commitment and the consistency of practice. Most students experience significant changes within a few weeks.
Is hypnotherapy safe for younger students, such as those in secondary school?
Yes, hypnotherapy can be adapted for younger students as well. It’s a safe, non-invasive way to help children and teenagers manage their focus, improve study habits, and reduce anxiety around schoolwork. However, it’s always best to consult with a professional hypnotherapist experienced in working with younger age groups.

How/ what did you do it for an hourr
It was a hypno session. It was a part of my studies. I’ve done the same session for another student. She had another issue. Hypnosis takes a lot of time, however, as a client you may feel that it’s a fast process.
So, usually a person have some issues and don’t know what did cause them. Regressive hypnosis can show you the root of a problem. Then you need to break an old patter/belief, release your trauma and create a new perspective.
So many people don’t understand the power of hypnotherapy. It’s a game changer. If a cognitive psychotherapy didn’t help you, hypnosis would give you much better and faster results.
If you have any other questions, please ask 💫
