A Guide to Understanding and Healing: Hypnotherapy in New York City
Hypnotherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses hypnosis to create a state of deep relaxation in a person's mind, allowing access to the subconscious. This state can be used to address a variety of issues, such as anxiety, addiction, phobias, and depression. Hypnotherapy has become increasingly popular in recent years, and if you're looking for a hypnotherapist in New York City, you're in luck.
New York City is a bustling metropolis that offers a wide variety of resources for anyone looking to improve their mental health. Hypnotherapy is no exception, and there are plenty of qualified practitioners who can help you achieve your goals.
In this blog, we will explore the world of hypnotherapy, from its history and origins to its modern applications and benefits. We will also discuss the process of hypnotherapy, the different types of hypnosis, and what to expect in a typical session.
The History of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy has been used for centuries as a healing tool, with its roots in ancient cultures such as the Greeks and Egyptians. However, it wasn't until the 18th century that hypnosis as we know it today was developed, with the work of Franz Mesmer, a German physician who believed that the power of suggestion could cure illnesses.
Mesmerism, as it was called, was popularized in the 19th century by James Braid, a Scottish physician who coined the term "hypnosis" and wrote extensively on the subject. From there, hypnotherapy continued to evolve and gain acceptance in the medical community as a valid form of therapy.
The Benefits of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy can be used to address a wide range of issues, from anxiety and depression to phobias and addictions. By accessing the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy can help people gain insight into their thoughts and behaviors, overcome negative patterns, and create positive change in their lives.
Research has shown that hypnotherapy can be effective in treating a variety of conditions, including:
Anxiety and stress
Depression
Insomnia
Pain management
Addiction
Phobias and fears
Weight loss
Smoking cessation
Performance enhancement
The Process of Hypnotherapy
The process of hypnotherapy typically involves an initial consultation where the therapist assesses the individual's needs and determines the goals of the therapy. The individual is then guided into a relaxed state through the use of guided imagery and suggestion. The therapist may use various techniques to address specific issues such as anxiety, phobias, or addiction. Hypnotherapy sessions typically last between 60 to 90 minutes and may require several sessions to achieve the desired results. Throughout the process, the individual remains in control and aware of their surroundings.
Overall, Hypnotherapy NYC is a powerful tool that can help you achieve your goals and improve your mental health. It's important to do your research and find a hypnotherapist who is qualified, experienced, and has a track record of success. You should also make sure that you feel comfortable with your therapist and that they understand your unique needs and goals.

Think about the wonderful success stories which your clients mention to you when they finish their therapy sessions.
Lives are literally transformed in our therapy rooms.
Metaphorical monsters are successfully slain. No more smoking. No more sleepless nights. No more panicky thoughts about presentations to colleagues.
Clients find they’re becoming more organised in their thinking. Business starts to pick up for them. Relationships start to improve.
And it’s not just one or two qualitative pieces of data which support the assertion. Many of you record your results as part of the ongoing CORP programme. We believe it’s the largest study of its kind in the UK.
The data shows consistent, and significant, improvements for clients who come to see us for help in managing, or overcoming, a number of conditions, including stress reduction.
The findings highlight how important our work can be for our clients and their families.
As we head into darker nights then so we often see people reach out to us for help in adjusting to the changing season. Afterall, the UK has suddenly gone from a 30 degree mini heatwave to a deluge of rain (and cold) in a single fortnight!
And that means some of us may start to see an increase in enquiries as potential clients come to see us to seek a refuge from the ‘winter blues’ and boost their serotonin levels with the help of the therapeutic alliance.
Our work provides change through the use of mirror neurons, alongside our positive approach to help create transformation for our clients as they go on to live the lives that they realistically wanted to live when they first came to see us.

Neuroscience News
An article in Neuroscience News, published in July this year, focused on a recent paper which set out to dispel a lot of common misconceptions about hypnosis.
It’s worth a read as it touches on a lot of commonly asked questions which we may hear when we undertake the initial consultation.
There’s sadly still a lot of mysticism surrounding hypnosis which is often reflected in the questions we’re asked during the initial consultation.
It’s a point which is brought out in the academic work undertaken by a team of researchers at Binghamton University, State University of New York.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, their report found rapport is an important factor in the hypnotherapist’s toolbox. They were keen to dispel any idea that hypnosis involved any type of ‘special powers.’
They found that ‘most people are sufficiently hypnotizable (sic) to reap substantial benefits from therapeutic suggestions.’ Their findings are certainly reflective of the results reported by many of our members.
The paper was completed with the help of a team at King’s College. Their findings reflected aspects of what we may explain to a potential client: hypnosis isn’t something whereby someone’s free will is removed from them.
Neuroscience News explained that the ‘authors clarify that people retain voluntary control during hypnosis.’ They add that during hypnosis even ‘the most highly suggestable individuals remain fully cognizant (sic) of their surroundings.’
The team concluded that hypnosis isn’t a ‘special state’ but should be ‘considered a procedure modulating awareness and cognition.’
They concluded that hypnosis has ‘many useful clinical applications, but that myths keep it from being utilized (sic) to its full potential.’
The Stoker who chills
The idea of myths and special powers associated with hypnotism can be traced back to the Victorian Times. As the nights draw in then it’s a time to dust off some book jackets and delve into a spot of Gothic horror.
And who better to turn to than the Stoker who chills? Dark winter nights. A pot of hot tea. The log burner gently spluttering in the background whilst the pages of Dracula are eagerly devoured.
Bram Stoker’s graphic novel was shocking when first published in Victorian times. And much of it is still unsettling today.
Unsurprisingly, he dwells upon a lot of what we would consider to be the ‘hocus pocus’ aspects of Victorian life. Vampires. Werewolves. Ghosts.
The usage of hypnosis for medical purposes began to wane when Blighty turning to anaesthesia in the 1840s. And so the Victorians start to use it for entertainment. It quickly garners cult like status (literally) and a mysticism grows around its usage.
It’s a mysticism which is reflected within the pages of Dracula which did much to encourage the folklore around the usage of ‘mesmerism.’
Our brave band of heroes set out across foreign lands to track down their quarry in Transylvania. Dracula is well ahead of them. So, to track his journey they turn to trance so they can ‘project’ themselves towards his hiding place.
It’s all entertaining stuff which was eagerly devoured by Victorian audiences. And, with their consumption of these types of penny shockers then so the myth of mesmerism began to grow.
Fuelled by the dramatic build ups created by stage hypnotism then it’s perhaps not surprising that for some clients there can be a significant difference in expectations for what a session will be like.
In other words, the idea that someone can suddenly click their fingers and magically solve a client’s issue is, perhaps, best kept to the realm of fiction.
Equally, we know that the correct usage of the Miracle Question can be a powerful tool in helping someone to transform their life – and subdue their own Victorian styled demon.
Beating modern day monsters doesn’t require the magical touch of Val Helsing but it does require the discipline of thought and the drive to help to drive change forward.
And so, it’s back to the log burner, the page turner that is Dracula, the pitter patter of rain on the window and that all important pot of tea…

Get Out: Subversive Colorblindness In Liberal America
Get Out is a 2017 horror film directed by Jordan Peele about Chris Washington going to visit his girlfriend's, Rose Armitage, family in upstate New York only to find out an incredibly dark twist of fate for Chris. The twist is that Rose and her family, who are white, plan to harvest Chris's body (and to dispose of his brain and mind), a black man, for his supposed "physical attributes" for a blind winner of an auction for Chris's body to be able to see again while maintaining his brain and consciousness.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fgoodblacknews.org%2F2017%2F04%2F11%2Freview-jordan-peele-provokes-thought-in-his-comedy-horror-masterpiece-get-out%2F&psig=AOvVaw0gWALWd3GHItlBMVA_HRF6&ust=1702250417589000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCIC6lZC_g4MDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD
There is a lot to unpack within many of Get Out's smaller moments, like Rose's dad Dean making strange comments to Chris about how he, if he could, he would vote for Barack Obama a third time, but I will be exploring the larger themes and how they connect to smaller moments like those kinds of comments.
Rose's family represents, pretty plainly through storytelling, the overwhelmingly established power of white privilege and whiteness. Rose's parents live on a massive plot of land in a huge house where her father Dean is a neurosurgeon and her mother Missy is a hypnotherapist. They also employ Georgina and Walter, a black housekeeper and black groundskeeper, respectively. Through this setup alone, there is an obvious parallel to plantation homes and slaves and subsequently to the power that white people hold over black people.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=http%3A%2F%2Fthefilmexperience.net%2Fblog%2F2017%2F5%2F29%2Fthe-furniture-get-outs-beige-house-of-colonial-horrors.html&psig=AOvVaw2m-eYeudRFZ2CJKcNYOe1X&ust=1702250016558000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCOjdsc-9g4MDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD
https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FAntebellum_architecture&psig=AOvVaw0OJkf8wZUnE6DT2rInWKlz&ust=1702250056112000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCJi1quK9g4MDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD
Gregory Jay asks about the invention of race and therefore the invention of white and black people as racial categories, and outlines that it was people who would now be identified as white that invented race. Dean Armitage represents the idea of original racism, that is, "scientific racism", wherein the principal originators of racism claiming that "Biological races were...to predict and determine the cultural traits of people, so that cultural differences could be 'explained' on a 'scientific' basis." (Jay 98). These "explanations" are then used as justification by Dean to inflict permanent mental torture and essentially death on Chris for his stereotypically stronger body and greater physical shape. In the Armitage family's longstanding quest to achieve racial perfection through bizarre and horrifying brain transplantation, they "...have become entangled so deeply in pursuing its nature that they self-destruct in the process.", (99) eliminating their own bodies for immortality.
Another striking example that is found in Get Out is the dual meaning of the photographs that Rose has in the bedroom of her family's house. Chris ends up rifling through some of her older belongings and finds images of past partners, both men and women but all black people, including Georgina and Walter. This striking imagery later reinterprets the photographs almost as a hunter posing with their dead prey, a power relationship that treats the tortured black partners of Rose as trophies. The history and original role of photography in America, as Nicholas Mirzoeff points out, was to index slaves as objects and things to be visualized and then sold. Mirzoeff mentions that "Both arose from the world created by Atlantic slavery, the violent interplay of cultures and peoples from...the Americas." (112), signifying that "violent interplay" became the power dynamic between white and black people where the former enslaved the latter. This origin story in Get Out signifies that Rose herself signifies that violence, shown through forced surgery but captured in-film as photographs, as an ongoing affect of the past.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2Finteractive%2F2020%2F02%2F12%2Fmagazine%2F1619-project-slave-auction-sites.html&psig=AOvVaw2wWInQNVxP7j7WwY-1DQw3&ust=1702250130233000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CBIQjRxqFwoTCNCjnIe-g4MDFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD
Get Out's subversion of ostensibly tolerant liberalism in America is both horrifying as it is portrayed but exact and precise in its messaging. The success that it brought to Jordan Peele solidified him as a masterful satirist of race dynamics, but the film still speaks volumes years after its release. So long as white people, especially liberals who claim acceptance but still practice strongly skewed power dynamics, claim that they don't see race, really mean that they will either ignore or continue to rule with it behind closed doors ("White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack").

Libraries and Librarians on Film: You're a Big Boy Now (1966)
This film is notable, not just just because it prominently features a library, but because it features the central research library of OUR library system! It features such NYPL treasures and landmarks as our famous reading room, the Patience and Fortitude lion statues, the Gutenberg Bible, the stacks beneath the library where staff members wear roller skates to get back and forth through the stacks quickly (wait ... what?), and the giant walk-in safe where the library keeps its classic pornography collection (wait ... WHAT???)
Needless to say, there is SOME fictionalizing of our library in this film!
Now, if I was going to discuss this entire film, it would take a LOT of posts, because there are so many topics worth discussing. I could share all of the New York City locations that are frozen in time, like the Automat, the last of the old Penn Station as it was being demolished, the "OLD" Times Square (if you know what I mean), and the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park. I could also discuss the intricacies of the plot, like how a young man named Bernard Chanticleer who works for the New York Public Library feels overwhelmed by many things in his life, including his relationship with his parents, his desire for two different women, and the challenge of living in the same building as an aggressive rooster. Or I could talk about how this film is populated by a very strange cast of characters, including, I kid you not, an albino hypnotherapist with a wooden leg!
Okay, but since I'm NOT going to talk about all of that, let's focus on the vintage NYPL stuff, shall we?
No one will be seated during the gripping CARD CATALOG scene!
BTW, if you're wondering (like I was) what books she's looking up and requesting, WE NEVER FIND OUT!!!
Here's Francis Ford Coppola's credit, over a shot of the book elevator. Fun fact: you're only supposed to use this elevator for books, NOT staff members!
Here's our hero Bernard holding his roller skates, listening to his colleague Raef tell him why he shouldn't ride in the book elevator.
This is a cool shot of the interior of the library's main hall. If you come in through the main entrance on 5th Avenue, look up and you'll see these archways.
Ah, yes. THE VAULT. If the head of the library (I.H. Chanticleer, played by Rip Torn) wants you to go in THE VAULT with him, you should run in the other direction.
FYI, this plot point was one of the reasons that NYPL objected to having this movie filmed in this building. From IMDB trivia:
Francis Ford Coppola was desperate to film on location at the New York Public Library but the library refused because of the scene involving classic pornography locked up in a steel vault. However, Mayor John V. Lindsay was eager to promote the city and prevailed on the Library to change it's mind. This is why Lindsay gets a special thanks credit. The vault scene was eventually filmed on a sound stage.
Now, one of the movie's plot points that is technically true is that NYPL does own one of the famous Gutenberg Bibles. They don't leave it out in the open, though, which is probably a good thing ...
Because this makes it easy for Bernard to steal it ...
And run through the reading room ...
... and run outside with it down Fifth Avenue ...
... and this chase scene continues downtown, right through a department store where people apparently didn't realize that they were being filmed! From IMDB trivia:
The chase through the store occurred at the Mays department store on East 14th Street and Union Square. It happened during normal business hours and used hidden cameras.
I hope that you enjoyed this unusual tour through the yesteryear of the New York Public Library, where some ideas worked, but other ideas were sometimes a problem:
FYI, I can't find any evidence that NYPL staff ever used roller skates to get around the stacks. Mr. Coppola said in an interview on TCM that his older brother told him that "... below in the stacks, the young people who get the books are on roller skates. I don't think it was true." HOWEVER, it appears that this urban legend has some layer of truth, because it was reported in The New York Times that this technique was once employed at the NYU library!!!
If you would like to experience You're a Big Boy Now for yourself, you can check it out on DVD from the New York Public Library. It's available to watch through the Internet Archive, and you can also keep your eyes peeled in case TCM shows it again!
ETA: in case you’d like to get the vibe of this movie without watching the whole thing, TCM has a clip of the first several minutes of the movie on its website! Red-hot card catalog action! Walking through the reading room! PNEUMATIC TUBES!!!!! Plus, some amazing music!

Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation: Exploring the Benefits and Success Rates in New York City
Smoking is a habit that can be extremely difficult to quit, even with the best intentions. There are many reasons why people continue to smoke, from stress relief to social pressure. However, the negative health consequences of smoking are well known, making it crucial to find ways to help individuals quit. Hypnosis for smoking cessation has gained popularity in recent years, with many people in New York City turning to this approach for its numerous benefits and promising success rates.
New York City Hypnosis is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis to change negative thought patterns and behaviors related to smoking. During a hypnosis session, a trained hypnotherapist guides the patient into a state of deep relaxation and heightened focus. In this state, the hypnotherapist can suggest new ways of thinking about smoking such as associating it with negative feelings instead of pleasure. They can also help the patient visualize their life as a non-smoker, which can be a powerful motivator.
Benefits of Hypnosis
One of the biggest benefits of NYC Hypnosis for smoking cessation is its natural and non-invasive approach. Unlike nicotine replacement therapies or prescription medications, hypnosis does not involve the use of any chemicals or drugs. This makes it a safe and gentle option for those who prefer to avoid pharmaceutical interventions. Additionally, hypnosis has no known side effects and does not require any recovery time making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.
Another benefit of Hypnosis is its ability to address the underlying emotional and psychological factors that contribute to smoking. For many individuals, smoking is a coping mechanism for stress or anxiety. By helping patients identify and manage these underlying issues, hypnosis can reduce the urge to smoke and increase the likelihood of long term success. Hypnosis can also be helpful for breaking the social and emotional ties that individuals may have to smoking such as associating it with certain places or people.
Success Rate of Hypnosis for Smoking Cessation
Success rates for Hypnosis for smoking cessation vary but many studies have shown it to be an effective tool for quitting smoking. One study published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis found that hypnosis was three times more effective than nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation. Additionally, a review of multiple studies on hypnosis for smoking cessation found that it was more effective than other interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or standard medical care.
It is important to note that Hypnosis is not a magic solution and may not work for everyone. Success rates depend on factors such as the individual's level of motivation and willingness to quit, as well as the skill and experience of the hypnotherapist. However, many people in New York City have found hypnosis to be a helpful tool for quitting smoking and improving their overall health and well-being.
If you are interested in trying NYC Hypnosis for smoking cessation, it is important to find a qualified and experienced hypnotherapist. Look for someone who is certified and has experience working with smoking cessation specifically. It is also important to have realistic expectations and be open to the process. Quitting smoking is a journey, and hypnosis can be a helpful tool along the way.
