I'm playing Hyperbolica, and it's really mean that the clue for one of the collectibles is that it's "in a corner" of the Infinity Cafe. The Cafe has like a billion corners. And also, no corners, technically

There's a guy in Hyperbolica who says "Maybe art is just the meaning we ascribe to experiences. Like, have you ever had a really good sandwich? Now that's art!" And I think he has so much to teach us.

I played the strangest simple game in VR today, which I got for $1 in the Steam Summer Sale. Walking around non-Euclidian space in VR is a trip, and I absolutely do NOT recommend it for people who get easily motion-sick, but if you don't like me then Hyperbolica is an interesting diversion! I'm not even sure if I plan on continuing it, but the concept itself is worth a look (at least at its current price)!

Group C Round 1
[image ID: the first image is of Kim Koizumi, a Japanese woman with short black hair. she's wearing a red and white checkered overshirt with the sleeves rolled up, and a gray undershirt. behind her is her in her red ranger costume. the second image is of NIL, a robot. its body is round, with a thick "neck" emerging and ending with a red visor. it appears to be attached to the wall or ceiling. end ID]
Kim Koizumi
Kim is a super nerd with a love for action and tokusatsu. Luckily for her she basically gets the opportunity of every power ranger fan's dream and gets to be the equivalent of the red ranger for her team. She's inspiring, she's frustrating, and she's got a hotblooded attitude like a shonen protagonist. She's the team leader and she's got a lot of growing to do all while kicking alien butt. She's also AroAce!
NIL
NIL, a rogue moderation AI for VR worlds accessed by those with the BrainLink brain implant, created the VR world Hyperbolica. (In fiction, of course. the game hyperbolica was made by youtuber CodeParade). It allows people whose brain matches certain frequencies into Hyperbolica when they sleep with BrainLink running. Once in Hyperbolica, NIL scans & copies their brains, creating a virtual clone that then deviates from the original. You, the player, spend the game within Hyperbolica, and eventually destroy NIL. Those already copied into Hyperbolica now have no physical bodies to return to, but a portal is opened allowing them to escape Hyperbolica and explore other virtual worlds.

Hyperbolica
Rating: 5/5. This game blasted my mind with bizarre non-euclidean geometry... what more could you want? Well, it also had delightfully funny writing and an interesting story!
I don't have a ton to say about Hyperbolica except the premise, but it's such a good one, and it totally delivers. This game is written from the ground up in a non-Euclidean game engine. Most of the levels take place in hyperbolic space of varying curvatures, and one level in a small spherical space. Here's some images from Wikipedia to show what this means:
So basically, this is a brain-melting game, but in the best way.
The gameplay itself is very cute and fun. The game takes place in a futuristic VR setting, so all the characters are little robot avatars. You play various minigames which both advance the plot while forcing you to come to grips with the weird geometry. Mostly you spend time chatting with various other robots, which is delightful, because the writing is very witty and fun.
There is also an overarching plot that culminates in an actual boss battle. I wasn't expecting this cute little game slash tech demo to have a solid and emotional climax and ending, but it did and I loved it.
The game also has a VR mode, which I haven't been brave enough to try ... but I may psych myself up to it someday. In the end, this game was everything I dreamed it would be and more - it blew my mind in a good way, taught me about geometry, made me laugh, and made me feel things. Can't recommend it more!

I played Hyperbolica while being extremely prone to motion sickness
I was excited for it since around 2021 and finally got it when it was on sale.
At first, it was really interesting and fun to play. Then after the first segment, I felt like there was slime sloshing around in my stomach. The worst part? The game is like a calm game for a rainy day, so all I wanted to do was keep playing the nice little game while wanting to vomit.
The best way I can describe this game for people with motion sickness like me is that its like a rich chocolate fudge cake. You take a bite and it's really good. Then you take another and its still good but you feel a bit ill. This doesn't stop you since it tastes so good, and now you feel like you're gonna throw up a few bites later, but still say "just one more bite"
So yeah, 10/10 game, so good it momentarily distracts from your motion sickness, and it's too late when you notice. I am now laying in my bed waiting for the icky feeling to go away
#Hyperbolica#game review#Later I learnt it was compatable with Steam VR#Just playing VRChat using a headset while standing still makes me queasy#so you can imagine the hell that would be Hyperbolica VR#motion sickness

My girlfriend and I both matched with the same character in the speed dating... minigame, I guess? in Hyperbolica. I'm not sure but I think this means we have to invite them into the polycule.
