It's actually too bad the show didn't set up Donna/Hyde as the main couple from the beginning - they're a much better match. They're both 'too cool for the room', they have very similar sociopolitical beliefs, they have similar aesthetics and tastes, neither wants very traditional lives (except when Donna suddenly does for plot purposes), they're both restless with rebellious streaks, and they're both blunt enough to call each other out on their bs and arrogance. I hate how everyone in the show's universe always talks about Donna being too good for Eric and out of his league or whatever because she's clearly internalized that and seems to agree with them. Meanwhile, Hyde always felt more attraction than actual respect for Jackie. I feel like Hyde and Donna would have a far more mutual relationship, both respecting the other more than they respected Jackie and Eric. And neither is really the affectionate, encouraging and warm person that Jackie and Eric both want.

Hard disagree, anon.

They wouldn't be as bad as Eric envisions in his dream, but they're not good for each other. Hyde and Donna would just affirm each other's rebellious, blunt traits, without finding crucial balance. There's no growth, warmth, or worthwhile challenge...they just exist. Donna would push Hyde to be more ambitious and focused, but that's literally it.

PS:

1. Yeah, they're similar politically, but with a massive caveat. Donna is definitely more traditional, in the sense that she has more innate trust in the system at large. She prefers to fight within the system, mostly, whereas Hyde wants to fight outside of it.

2. They're way better as friends, with brother/sister vibes.

3. JH and ED balance each other way better. They actually challenge each other, in a worthwhile way. Donna pushes Eric to stand up for himself, Eric provides Donna with loving stability, Jackie gets Hyde to open up and focus, and Hyde gets Jackie to think. Eric would get Jackie to do that, too, but Hyde gets Jackie to really probe and push boundaries.

I love the scene on 06/13 where Hyde is giving advice to Kelso over Fez and says Jackie met someone better over time — him.

He says he throws it in Kelso’s face as often as possible and honestly, this needs to be a fic. Like a bunch of different times throughout the years of Hyde reminding Kelso she picked him.

And how cool it would have been to see 🥺
