Either way, he feels really bad about it, but has no idea why. His emotions aren't really grounded, so he knows he did something bad but isn't sure how to approach it. He does catch up to you extremely quickly though, but he demands an explanation right after.

Through tears, you might have to explain how you thought you were about to get killed. You were aware of your boyfriend being an assassin, so you do have all the right to flinch and flee, but Illumi might have to take a few seconds to understand.

"I wouldn't kill you though, you know you're important to me," his words are a bit dry, but you understand what he's trying to say. He can't hurt you because he cares too much about you, but the way he expresses it doesn't always translate well. If you need some time for yourself, he'll respect that but keep a watch on you from afar. He's horrible at hugging or any form of physical affection, so if you want a hug from him it might feel more like a stiff pat on your shoulder

Overall, he's a bit detached when trying to calm you down, but he does try his best to let you know you're safe with him. He'll never repeat that mistake ever again either.

Chrollo

Probably the best at approaching this situation out of the trio. He's extremely careful around you, but this one time he wasn't and you thought he was about to stab you with a knife. In reality, he was trying to move the knife away and leave the room but ran a bit too quickly in your direction.

He realizes his mistake when he sees you flinch and before you can run off he already has your hand in his and him asking if you are alright. He'll place the knife away from you and pull you closer, asking if you were frightened.

You'll be coerced into telling him how you felt all while he's holding you. He's learned mainly from books how to deal with situations like this, but if you just need some time for yourself he'll understand that as well. He tends to observe people really well, so he's really good at calming you down.

About your recent jjk meta, I agree Gojo is fighting more for himself than Megumi rn - but rather than the satisfaction coming from Gojo proving himself the strongest, I think the implication is that it's the fact that he's found himself an "equal" that he considers satisfying, it's his "loneliness" that's highlighted and satisfaction comes up only when he believes he might lose. After all, that was his goal in raising strong students, he wanted to not feel alone as the strongest.

You make a valid point anon, I was of two minds about what Gojo's satifsaction is coming from. I wanted to give Gojo the benefit of the doubt and assume he's fighting to win because if he doesn't win this match it's his students lives that are on the line. However, it's equally as possible that Gojo's just satisfied with the fact he finally has a challenger. He even tells Sukuna right away that "he's the challenger."

In Gojo's mind he's not fighting against the strongest sorcerer in history to prove himself. Sukuna is fighting to dethrone Gojo from his position as the strongest sorcerer in modern day. The manga deliberately leaves it ambiguous what the source of his fulfillment is though, "being the strongest sorcerer came with a sense of isolation so the source of his presence since of fulfillment was..."

Another thread pointed out this similarity between Gojo and Sukuna's battle, and Netero and Meruem's battle before I got to it.

HUNTER X HUNTER AND JJK PARALLELS UNDER THE CUT:

However that twitter mainly looks at it from a fight mechanics and layout angle, whereas in my mind the biggest parallel between the two fights is that Gojo and Sukuna's fight is also to show off how close to Sukuna's thinking Gojo really is, despite the fact that Gojo is you know, an idealistic person who wants to reform Jujutsu Society as a whole the fact that he sits in the position of the strongest and the isolation that comes from that position makes him behave like Sukuna in a lot of ways. Albeit a Sukuna with principals.

I might have been giving Gojo too much credit though in assuming he's thinking "this is a situation where I absolutely have to win and save everyone" because the battle itself reminds me a lot of the battle between Netero and Mereum in Hunter x Hunter. A battle where despite the fact Netero was fighting against the Chimera Ant Leader to stop their invasion and save lives they ended up treating it more like a game of Shogi (the HXH version) and forgetting the lives they were supposed to be fighting for.

We agree anon that Gojo at this point is not fighting for Megumi. Megumi is on the back burner after everything else, and he's chasing a personal satisfaction in this fight. Where that satisfaction comes form is debatable because the narrative left it ambiguous. However, I think it says a lot about Gojo's character that at a time like this he's looking for personal fulfillment in a fight with what's on the line.

To explain the context of these Netero vs Meruem parallels the CHimera Ant Arc happens when a Chimera Ant washes up on shore and starts eating humans. Obviously they send hunters in to kill her, but then she starts giving birth to an all new fledgling species. The chimera ants are aggressive of course and start hunting other humans but they're also... sentient. They have thoughts and feelings. All of them are basically newborns too in an alien world so it's understandable they wouldn't get things like empathy and laws.

The purpose of this entire arc is to show that humanity's reaction to an not-human but still sentient species can make them come off as just as inhuman as the inhuman monsters they're fighting against. No more is this exemplified in Netero vs Meruem.

By the time the Mereum fight happens, Meruem has slowly been learning a sense of empathy through his interactions with a weak girl named Komugi who despite being blind and unable to fend for herself is able to beat him at a board game called Gungi over and over again. Which disproves Meruem's darwinian ideas of survival of the fittest because a girl he'd dismiss as weak is able to best him again and again and he sees value in his perosnal connection to her.

Meruem is also like a newborn infant, albeit one born with the brain of an adult. He's been alive for like a week and he's already starting to learn things like kindness and compassion through his interaction with one girl who earned his respect and that's making him slowly change how he treats his subordinates and even making him consider the potential in humans he looked down on.

Then in struts Netero to challenge him to a fight and kill him before he ever gets that chance to grow. The moral ambiguity here is that Netero is a person despite ostensibly being on the side of the hunter's association who are the default "good guys" that the main characters are on, he's not really that good of a person.

Characters like him, Ging, and Pariston may seem like they're heroic in nature because they're strong adventurous and capable of great feats but at the same time they're really only out for their own personal satisfaction. Ging's probably the best example because he's the greatest adventurer ever but he could not give less of a shit about the feelings of the son he abandoned. Netero's the strongest hunter, he's a well-respected adventurer fighting on Gon's side but that doesn't necessarily make him a good person.

When Meruem and Netero both treat this life or death battle like it's a Gungi game, it's supposed to parallel Netero to Meruem but Netero comes off looking worse. Meruem is a newborn basically who's slowly learning empathy because you're not born with it you're taught with it through your interactions with others. Netero is a grown man, who should have some sense of empathy but he's not really fighting for his comrades here he's fighting for his own personal satisfaction of winning the "game."

Netero is not set up to look like the good guy here, which is why his final action is, which is essentially to set off a nuke.

Nuclear weapons are an incredibly heavy topic in Japan, and so to associate the actions of Netero detonating a bomb that not only creates whats essentially a mushroom cloud, completely vaporizes his opponent and then poisons the land for generations to come it's a pretty clear way to show the immorality of his actions.

Netero commits one of the most inhumane war crimes in existence, we're not really supposed to see him as the good guy here, especially in a japanese work.

I'm not saying that Gojo is going to set off a nuke, just the purpose of the fight it's paralleling in Hunter x Hunter was to show off the humanity vs inhumanity of both participants in the fight and also the selfishness of Netero himself treating this like a game to be won when real people's lives are on the line and his decision (firing off the nuke) will affect real people for generations to come. The egocentrism of one individual who holds that much power and follows a might vs right mindset vs. a being like Meruem who is beginning to value weak people through his connection with Komugi and therefore overturning his survival of the fittest and strong vs weak thinking.

However this time we're not saying the Sukuna is more human than Gojo (the chimera ant arc ending with Netero being inhuman) but rather than Gojo is equally as inhuman as Sukuna. They're playing a game to win the special boy cup (feeling fulfilled in a fight for once / being declared as the strongest). What exactly makes them fulfilled is ambiguous but they both really only care about personal fulfillment in this fight everything else is secondary yes even for Gojo.

Gojo is, again coming off like a more principled version of Sukuna here. He's not wielding his power like a tyrant to kill whoever he wants but at the same time he has all of Sukuna's egoism and he's displaying the same egocentrism. Gojo's pigeonhold himself into the same role of being "the strongest" as Sukuna has and because of it not only do his personal relationships suffer but his priorities are schewed right now. At a time where he should be prioritizing Megumi the person he's responsible for and you know his ideals of protecting children he's chasing the thrill in a fight instead. Because that's what Gojo knows. That's who he is.

Gojo hasn't escaped from his conceptualization of himself as the strongest and hasn't really tried to build an identity outside of it, and being boxed didn't really change much about him or the way he sees himself or approaching things. If anything he's doubling down.

Geto's line to Gojo during their KFC breakup still rings true.

To be fair to Gojo he did ask Utahime and some other guy for help with the opening blow, but he's essentially fighting the same way he did in Shibuya all alone. Like, what can better illsutrate this point then the fact that Gojo is fighting alone and literally every other character in the manga is just sitting in the peanut gallery watching the fight on television like it's a boxing match.

Gojo's in his element when he's still alone still rings true. Every single other character in the manga is still just lying on Gojo because he's "the strongest" and not really understanding who he is or seeing him as a person. I emphasize again they're literally just sitting there watching the match on TV. Gojo's character or conceptualization of himself hasn't really evolved being being "the strongest" and a character staying stagnant in a narrative is never a good thing.

Alluka and Nanika’s relationship is despicably twisted.

In the world of HxH, duos have taken shapes in numerous forms and meanings depending on who they are as people.

Duos such as Netero and Zeno, Silva and Zeno, Gon and Killua, Pariston and Ging, Illumi and Hisoka, and many more have all given different significances and purposes for siding with the person they are currently with, no matter if they are shown in a bad, good or grey light.

But what if one of those duos wasn’t balanced or reciprocated?

What if it was instead a dependable one-sided partnership and not a consensual one but took the appearance of a balanced relationship right under our noses?

And what if that type of “duo” completely missed us due to how we conveniently perceive these two as being “adorable” or “pure” when they’re put together?

There’s a good chance we didn’t notice this toxic relationship at first glance since Alluka and Nanika are the duos described here.

Throughout the episodes and chapters alike, we have come to learn more about how Alluka and Nanika seem to be cooperating and functioning separately.

From the differences between their speech patterns to their personality, we have also come to notice how they easily get along with one another despite sharing one singular body.

So it wouldn’t be far-fetched to believe that their relationship isn’t critically unbalanced.

When you are completely certain two individuals are considered to be a team, you should at least know about both parties to better know what their personalities and especially intentions are all about.

Alluka should theoretically be the first that comes to mind when we think about which of them is easier to learn more about since the personality of the zoldyck is pretty transparent when in actuality, they are just as difficult to figure out as the other.

So to start, let’s begin with the one that we truly know the most about: Nanika.

Since this creature isn’t human, the only way to know what it does and what it is capable of is to learn its species’ roots.

This shouldn’t be a problem for anyone to find out more about Nanika’s abilities since we already witnessed what she could do already. But once we start to learn what it can do to its captor, we learn that it is not just her requests we need to fear.

And the captor in this situation would be Alluka.

We have already found an immediate red flag.

If you need a briefer, here is what we publicly know about Nanika:

Nanika is part of the Five Threats that were obtained from the Dark Continent during the five voyages that occurred in the past. Contrary to what Killua thinks of her, Nanika is part of a gaseous lifeform species called “Ai” and lives southwest of Lake Mobius. They do not have any sort of actual language system whatsoever. However, they do seem to make a sound close to the word “Ai” which is the Japanese word for “love”. They are lifeforms capable to give a maximum of four requests to an individual which usually leads that person to die by getting squashed or wrung to death if they do not accomplish any or only half of the beings’ requests.

So far, this is all we have of its capabilities on the surface but things seem to turn eerily familiar for the worst once we dig under the iceberg.

And this is where the captor comes into play.

This small detail is what immediately sorts Alluka and Nanika out from the usual duo dynamic because this dangerous ability of Nanika is the very reason why Alluka is the way that she is.

Throughout our time with Alluka, the possessed zoldyck has been shown countless times to not specifically care about Nanika’s victims which are the ones who usually die due to an individual’s wish.

The people that get squashed to death don’t seem to faze Alluka in any way.

We see this time and time again.

Whenever Alluka sees or hears about the news of innocent victims, no distinct reaction is present on the kid’s face.

Example 1: Mitsuba’s death which lead to her lover also dying in the process gave Alluka no reaction.

Example 2: The dead people related to the photographer who got through the zoldyck gates thanks to Milluki gave Alluka no reaction.

Example 3: The female servant named Kasuga who babysat Alluka died right in front of the said child’s eyes and still gave Alluka no reaction.

At first glance, Alluka’s odd behaviour could have been resolved with logical explanations such as the fact that the zoldyck is still very young, and doesn’t know any better, not to mention that the child is part of an assassin family so death is pretty much a norm here so it would be alright to think that the deaths happening left and right is appropriate.

But if we follow that logic, then it wouldn’t make any sense as to why Alluka is capable to know that hurting people’s feelings is a wrong thing to do when Killua stood up to Nanika and told her to disappear.

If Alluka knows that hurting people verbally is wrong, then the kid should be able to know that hurting people physically is just as bad as words except worse.

Something is wrong here.

Normal children would be able to comprehend that hurtful gestures and words can be harmful to anyone.

So why isn’t Alluka also standing up for the unnecessary physical violence that Nanika is causing?

It’s clear as day that Alluka doesn’t see anything wrong with Nanika. She fully supports the calamity and would do anything for it to the point where she would even scold Killua, her own brother, for trying to make Nanika leave.

This is hard solid evidence that Alluka is also a victim of Nanika.

Since the victim is forced to fully support and encourage the self-destructive behaviour of Ai, that makes Alluka a sort of pawn to manipulate for Nanika.

Whether Alluka realizes this or not, this could also explain her lack of personality. Alluka is always seen gaping like a fish whenever accidents and death happen all around her. Almost like she couldn’t have a personality of her own because of Nanika’s presence taking all the space, suppressing her and keeping her in a corner in her own body.

Yes, not only is Alluka always supposed to support Nanika no matter what, the zoldyck is not even capable of being present in her own body for long periods.

According to Killua, the number of times Alluka truly appeared without Nanika was deemed to be close to nothing.

So Alluka can't essentially come back when:

1. the person who couldn’t have completed all of Nanika’s requests dies, Alluka cannot come out until the requests have been completed by someone else who comes along right after.

2. the person who’s been completing requests suddenly moves away from Nanika and the wish is cancelled (ex: Tsubone and the fingernails).

3. Nanika isn’t very good at healing so whenever she finishes healing someone or something, she has to go to sleep for a long while.

Because we see the requests piling up when Alluka’s body is present, many have failed to realize which of the two was talking in some cases since some fans believe that Alluka was mostly present everywhere because Nanika hasn’t physically appeared.

When this is strictly false.

Nanika can appear without changing Alluka’s face.

Fortunately for Killua, you can pinpoint exactly when Alluka is present and when Nanika has taken over simply by analyzing the body’s speech pattern.

Whenever the body is calling people by their full names (ex: “Kurapika”, “Hisoka”), Nanika is present.

Whenever the body is calling people with an honorific (ex: “Gon-chan”, “Mitsuba-san”) or some kind of nickname (ex: “Oniichan”), Alluka is present.

This helpful detail reinforces the fact that Alluka is encouraging Nanika’s behaviour as well as being incapable of having free will over her own body.

Above all that, Nanika could be aware of everything that she’s doing to Alluka.

After all, if asking for requests and expecting some people to die to some of them is a natural habit/side-effect of Nanika’s, then she could very well believe that what she’s doing to Alluka is completely natural.

Even though Nanika doesn’t see anything wrong with the killings she committed, she has shown to be capable of loving her vessel and Killua.

So the possibility of her thinking that what she’s doing to them is normal but would still genuinely love them, wouldn’t be far-fetched to believe.

However, the love that she bears for them doesn’t mean she’ll willingly stop granting wishes if they don’t like it.

It’s in her nature to give out requests after all.

Nanika’s ability is all about manipulation, her main objective is to grant desires without stopping. This also means that she’ll do anything to keep granting even if she has to manipulate her close ones.

A good proof of this would have to be the time when Nanika suddenly became very vocal about her feelings towards Killua when he started telling her she couldn’t come out anymore.

Nanika completely understood at the time that not coming out anymore meant no more wishes to give.

She immediately becomes less commanding and instead tells him how she loves him for him to feel guilty for the fact that he’s about to make her stop doing what she loves entirely.

While codependency is a very common thing in our world, where someone deliberately supports their partner’s self-destructive behaviour, in this case, the Ai species seems to use that same tactic to their advantage by instead forcing their victims to feel those same feelings towards them instead of letting them make that choice on their own.

Although it is not confirmed if Nanika initially didn’t care for Alluka and Killua the first time she met them and slowly genuinely loved them later on, it does not change the fact that her species have a strong tendency to control their vessel so that they could get the chance to make more wishes by their vessel’s forced consent.

In other words, Nanika is completely codependent on Alluka.

She has an obsessive focus on her partner’s behaviour, tries to control her other half daily, literally doesn’t have any boundaries since they both share the same body and especially doesn’t want to be separated from her vessel since her true form is primarily made of gas.

If Killua thought that Alluka’s living condition was unhealthy and dangerous because of his family, then he should have also tried pushing Nanika away when he still had the chance back in the hospital.

Now that Alluka knows what he was about to do, she forced him to respect Nanika’s place in their private circle and he immediately agreed to do just that so that his younger sibling won’t get angry at him.

There is now nothing that Killua can do to erase Nanika anymore.

She has Alluka fully wrapped around her finger and she plans on keeping it that way for as long as she lives.

Always somehow smells like rain water and eucalyptus

Though he's tried to preserve as much of the traditions and customs of the kurta clan, he's slowly losing it as he goes deeper and deeper his attempt to avenge them.

Keeps a diary but is never consistent with it (sounds like his friendships)

Has the biggest rbf ever and no one is brave enough to point it out.

Absolutely despised fast food, would only eat it if it was the only option for him.

He use to feed all the cats on the island. It gotten so bad that all the rodents on the island are nearly extinct because he's been keeping hundreds of felines alive.

The best swimmer out of everyone.

Does not have a specific type of music he likes but Killua got him to listen to the Weekend and they've bonded over that.

When he was younger he really wanted younger siblings because there weren't many kids on the island.

Could you potentially explain why you ship Kalluto and Feitan? Is it more of a crack ship or like legitimate? You don’t have to answer if you don’t feel comfortable

Hi, thanks for the ask!

Around 4 years ago, when I was watching HxH for the first time (the 2011 version) and Kalluto said the line about "toying with his prey" I thought "lmao is he a sadist like Feitan?" and my brain decided to never shut up about it since then, so it very much can be considered a crack ship, especially that they had mere one inconsequential interaction in canon.

But I like to overthink stuff, so here comes the essay:

Ok before the essay, I think I have to clarify that "shipping" doesn't mean I want them to be canon, or I perceive their relationship as a peak of romance.

Sometimes I just like to daydream about fake scenarios, sometimes it's a great mean to analyze characters too. Authors don't usually give full psychological profiles and as the characters are not real people, we have no idea how they would react to everything, but it's fun to think about. Putting two characters together can create some interesting dynamics that can also serve to further explore their individual personalities.

1. The most superficial layer — they're both my favorite HxH characters, and thinking about my two favorites at the same time is double the fun. Plus, they just look cool. The high school edgelord inside me is a sucker for dark aesthetics.

2. The differences between them

I like when there is a ground for conflicts in ships. Even in my ships that are most agreed on in fandom, there are some clashes (e.g. AkiAngel is the most popular ship in CSM and I like their fluff content, but I also very much enjoy how they began with hating each other's guts). I just find it interesting.

Their origins (Zoldycks' wealth vs everything about Meteor City) and their upbringings (the calculated torture-training program to become an assassin vs the chaos and uncertainty of living in the junkyard, when the rest of the world barely sees you as a human) had to heavily influence them, shape their worldviews and values.

Although both work as a part of a group, but the groups themselves have completely different attitudes toward their members.

Serving the group, as the Zoldycks teach it, means sacrificing one's individuality for the sake of it, a duty before personal needs (which probably shouldn't exist in the first place). We can see how devoted Kalluto is to his family, basically anything he does is in the context of it and its well-being.

The Phantom Troupe, on the other hand, is very individualistic. Of course, there are rules and hierarchy, but beyond that the members are free to do whatever they want. We know that not every meeting is obligatory, between missions they can spend the time separately if they want, they can use their skills in a way they themselves find fitting (e.g. Kortopi isn't forced to fight).

One offers stability but requires extreme conformity, the other gives freedom in exchange for volatility of living day by day.

How these approaches may be challenged by each other?

Can they find golden mean, or will one overpower the other?

And the other subject I like to think about:

The self-control

Considering Illumi's words to Killua, Kalluto probably strives to be emotionless and passionless as a good assassin should be, which is showing in having a blank expression 90% of time and the most "dialogue" lines being only the thoughts. The only times Kalluto showed more emotions was a) an angry glare he gave Gon and friends; in my opinion, with limited information he had, the rightful hatred toward people who want to take Killua away and are a cause of recent family problems. b) smiling after killing the ant (immediately followed by self-scolding for the "bad habit", even though he clearly found it enjoyable). c) everything that happened during the Feitan vs Zazan fight, which, again, is mostly shown by his thoughts, so I assume his reaction are a little bit exaggerated. Additionally, he was already distressed by the Troupe's power and his own misjudgement.

Meanwhile Feitan. Oh boy. He seems cold and calculated at first, because of his more stand-offish nature, but I don't believe he's good at self-control. A few times canon points it out:

What if Kalluto would loosen his restraints?

What if Feitan would be forced to hold himself back?

What if both would happen at the same time?

3. The similarities

So. Many. Traumas. Feitan as a child, had to learn a concept of death very early. Other children disappearing, people from the outside having no regard for the lives of Meteor City habitants – it left a scar on all the founding members. Kalluto was born in the family of the assassins. We know only trainings Killua had to endure, and he's a special heir case, but judging from Kalluto's abilities at his age, he didn't have a fun time either. Both Feitan and Kalluto have to have a screwed view of human life, which isn't really shared by the majority of the population, even in the quite desensitized world HxH is placed in.

Despite what I wrote before about the Spiders, Feitan is shown to be very loyal to both the Troupe and Chrollo. He demands apologies when, in his opinion, Nobunaga insults Chrollo. He doesn't hesitate a second to obey Chrollo's order and sacrifice him for the Troupe's sake. So despite his "Family? What's that?" comment, he seems to be capable of understanding the devotion to the group, and by extent, the Zoldycks' dynamics.

And the first thing I mentioned in this post — the sadistic tendencies. Although, I think they can have different sources (it's already long, (I'm sorry!) I won't write another essay about unhealthy ways to regain a feeling of control over one's life now), it's a peculiar connection. I don't think I have to elaborate on Feitan, as he's rightfully assigned as "the sadistic one" by the fandom. But Kalluto's case is weird. The only scene when he smiles is when he just slowly torn someone apart. Something that in some sense goes against his family. And then it's never mentioned again. I think it has a great potential in revealing his very very very hidden character, and Feitan can be used as a tool to prompt it.

4. More morbidly, because shifting away from purely emotionally-psychological stuff — would Feitan care about age?

The whole world isn't really concerned about children that much, letting them take the extremely dangerous Hunter exam or compete in the Heaven's Arena. The Phantom Troupe was founded when they were teens. It feels like the old times philosophy of a child being just a weaker adult, and no Spider struck me as a human rights activist to defy that view, especially Feitan.

Adding that he was seen with bdsm loli art book... uhhh. In other situations, I'd take it as Togashi's Easter egg, but the fact that he does it right after torturing someone is quite... concerning. And with the amount of vile acts the Phantom Troupe has committed, I don't hold them to any moral standards and honestly expect the worst of them.

5. It's kinda me bashing of Zoldycks in disguise... Or rather exploring the consequences of their abuse. In canon we saw Killua's healing story (still not fully finished, I'd say), but as the heir he was a special case. I want to delve into the sadder side of life. It's not unheard of that the neglected child is looking for their place in the world? Comfort? Sense of belonging? Love? In places they definitely shouldn't.
