Can you draw what the Iroquois Confederacy would look like?

well first of all, they call themselves the Haudenosaunee! And the second of all, as the word confederacy implies, there are multiple nations under that term: the Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora! Now designing six nations all at once is a tall order for even me, so for now, I’m going to stick to the Onondaga, Mohawk, and Seneca, the senior members of the Confederacy!

Historical Footnotes:

I specifically designed these three with the story of the Confederacy’s founding in mind. Specifically, the three figures who played a major role in its establishment- the Peacemaker, who first convinced the Mohawk nation to give up war and adopt peace, Hiawatha, an Onondaga chief who lost his wife and daughters to war and decided to join the Peacemarker’s cause, and Jigonhsasee, a elderly woman from the Seneca who also joined the Peacemaker and convinced the women of the nations to agree to the Great Law of Peace. The Great Law of Peace is the oral constitution of the Confederacy, and outlines laws as well as ceremonies to be performed at specific times.

For Mohawk and Onondaga, I heavily referenced the regalia of the Haudenosaunee dancers in the Indian Village of the 2017 New York State Fair! Mohawk’s clothing is specifically based on Haneh Brandt of the Mohawk nation.

During community and ceremonial gatherings, men will wear gustowehs, a frame cap decorated with hawk, pheasant, or turkey feathers. They could be decorated with silver, animal hide, and hair. Each nation of the confederacy had their own unique gustoweh, denoted by the number and position of the feathers. Mohawk and Onondaga's own gustowehs reflect their unique styles.

Haudenosaunee beadwork, or "raised beadwork", was developed by the women in the early 18th century and has a very distinctive style. Small white beads create lacelike decorations around the edges of the dress's collar, skirt, and leggings. Men's clothing and accessories like purses and satchels were also decorated with raised beadwork.

I referenced this design for the embroidery, but sadly, I can’t seem to find a source for this :( If you do, please let me know so I can credit it!

The hummingbird pendant Mohawk is wearing was inspired by this beaded mask made by Callie Konwanonhsiyohstha Hill of the Turtle Clan Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory!

Women hold an especially large role in Haudenosaunee society. Both men’s and women’s councils could propose legislation to the Grand Council. Haudenosaunee clans, which are like extended family, were matrilineal, and the eldest woman, known as the Clan Mother, had a number of responsibilities. It was Clan Mothers who nominated the Hoyaneh, or chief, of the clan, and they could choose to remove him if he failed in his duties. Historically, Clan Mothers also had the right to call for a war party.

Upon first contact, the Haudenosaunee weren’t on great terms with the French, particularly because the French had chosen to ally with the Wyandot (Huron), who were bitter enemies with the Confederacy. They fought the decades long Beaver Wars against numerous other indigenous nations and their French allies.

The Haudenosaunee fought numerous wars against their neighbors, including the Mi’kmaq, who live in what is now Canada as well as the northeastern Maine.

The Three Sisters refer towards the three main agricultural crops of the Haudenosaunee, though many other indigenous groups also depended on them- Squash, maize/corn, and climbing beans. Maize was used not just in dishes like succotash, hominy, and many others, but  it was also used in weaving, baskets, and clothing. Women were responsible for crop cultivation, though men took part in the initial preparation by clearing the planting ground.

During the American War of Independence, the Confederacy attempted to stay neutral. However, the Tuscarora and Oneida ended up siding with the colonists, whereas the Seneca, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Mohawk remained loyal to the British.

The Smoke Dance is a social dance unique to the Haudenosaunee; though its origins are not clearly known, one theory says it originated from a war dance once exclusively performed by men. Nowadays, it’s primarily a competitive dance; men and women both compete during festivals and powwows.

Numerous Haudenosaunee men were hired to work on major construction projects starting in the late 19th century. They were called “Ironwalkers,” and many left their native communities to seek work in the cities. Due to the danger of the work, ironworkers partner up, and Haudenosaunee ironworkers typically partner with a brother or a relative. Some projects that the Haudenosaunee worked on include the George Washington Bridge, the Empire State Building, the United Nations, and the World Trade Center. 

Lacrosse originates from the Confederacy. The Haudenosaunee call it Tewaarathon, which means “they bump hips”, and it is seen as a gift from the Creator. It’s considered to be a medicine game, or a game to be played to heal and strengthen people, along with resolving disputes and dispelling negative feelings between clans and nations. Recently, the Irish Lacrosse team voluntarily stepped down from competing in the 2022 World games so the Haudenosaunee team could play!

“Hey, remember when we were young? When you sat right here on the floor? You looked so terrible in your suit back then. You even still had green tips from growing out your Mohawk.”

François fanned his face while he laughed but Arthur saw no reason to laugh with him.

“What do you mean I looked terrible?” he asked. “It’s not like either of us made a good figure back then – and I don't remember anything terrible about my perfectly good suits anyways.”

François snorted, with a frown on his face but one eyebrow slightly cocked and smirk on his lips.

“You didn’t drink enough yet, I can tell by your civility. And come on, Arthur, you know very well that your suit was so ill-fitting that it made you look like a child playing dress up in his father’s closet.” He laughed again. “The leather jackets you wore up to then suited your scrawny body much better.”

Arthur had turned away as he took another sip from his wine. The glass was nearly empty when he put it down. François considered pretending that he was offended by how Arthur was gulping down his fine wine, but decided against it. It was too late for pretence.

“Well, it was my father's suit,” Arthur suit and François pressed his lips together.

A sandtrap. Now they sat there in silence.

“You’ve really grown into his footsteps, though,” François said and looked at Arthur from the corner of his eye. “And into your suits, too.” He grinned.

Arthur snorted once. His face rested on his fist, elbow propped up on the table.

“You haven’t changed at all.”

“Well, you cannot change perfection.”

“And only an idiot persists in his mistakes.”

The corners of François’ mouth dropped into an annoyed expression. Arthur had a small smirk on his lips as he drank the rest of his wine.

“You should know that best, shouldn’t you?” François asked him. “It’s what lead you here, isn’t it? From way back when you were sitting on my floor, struggling to stabilize your position, but determined on earning the respect you thought you were owed. Once you were back on your feet, you only always marched into one direction. Never looking back, never paying mind to any of the warning signs, even when you tripped. Only kept on stumbling ahead, until you nearly tripped off the edge of a cliff.”

François had been staring at his wine while he monologued. He glanced at Arthur.

His upper lip was slightly pulled upwards, while his eyes were half-lidded. His eyebrows hung close over them.

“If I had wanted to get reminded of that, I could’ve went literally anywhere else in this godless world.”

“Non, non, non, if you had went anywhere else but here, you probably wouldn’t have been alive to hear it.”

Arthur snorted again. “Yes, I owe you my life and undying gratitude. I need more wine for this shit.”

Arthur got up and François watched him walk over to the dresser on which another bottle sat.

Arthur took it, unscrewed it and filled his glass up again. He took the bottle with him as he walked over to the couch.

François smiled.

 Oh, how thoughtful of you to think of me -

Arthur stopped in front of him, leant slightly down and threw the entire glass worth of wine into his face.

François held his breath for a second and shook his head before he gasped.

“Bugger off with your fucking knight in shining armour attitude,” Arthur said as he sat down on the floor. He slammed the glass onto the coffee table and put the bottle straight to his lips.

“Arthur! My clothes! My couch! My wine –“

“Fuck your everything, Bonnefoy,” Arthur replied after he had put the bottle down. “Thought it might clear your already empty head. Seriously, who do you think you are? Do you think I’d rather not jump off that bloody cliff in your metaphor if I had to crawl in the dirt in front of you instead?”

François looked down on him and cocked one eyebrow. “Well, you are sitting on the floor in front of me right now.”

Arthur, who was drinking straight from the bottle again, showed him the V-sign.

François chuckled and reached for a handkerchief to clean his face. He unbuttoned his shirt and leant forward, arms resting on his knees with the hands dangling between his legs.

“I can’t believe I saved your sorry life and that I’d do it all again,” he said.

Arthur suppressed a belch. “And I can’t believe that I’m still so deeply thankful for it when you’re being an utter wanker. Don’t tell anyone I said that, though, I’ll deny it and renounce every thanks I ever mumbled to you.”

François laughed quietly. “Yes, yes, of course you’ll do.”

He leant in even closer to Arthur, grabbed his jaw and turned his head to kiss him. Arthur complied, tilting his head upwards and pressing his lips against François.

They tasted like wine, like the one which dripped from François hair onto Arthur’s pants.

Middle school crush: red haired dork who asked me for hw help all the time and I made fun of him for being bad at Latin. Its how we flirted. It was cute.

High school crush: she was really short, petite, beautiful and a nerd, way too good of a student. That was a hard crush. I really fell hard for her and cried a lot about it. We went swing dancing together and sent each other Valentines cards and one time she held my hand :(

College crush: extremely down to earth and cool genderqueer polyamorous buff acrobat with a blue mohawk (which looked incredible) who taught me to juggle and went blues dancing with me. I was too intimidated by their other partners to kiss them. I REGRETTTTT!!! (Awkwardly not the only juggling Tim I've had a crush on though juggling Tim #2 was extremely different personality and looks wise. The joke is that when I meet juggling Tim #3 we'll have to get married)

hrmmmm can I say Demise first off? Well, I’m gonna say Demise. I will admit that he has grown on me after like, 6 years lol b/c I like the fact he’s calm and collected, making him a nice contrast to Ghirahim’s far more flamboyant, explosive nature, and is also a graceful loser at his eventual defeat. HOWEVER, the Imprisoned. JESUS. That thing is just a walking beanbag with LITERAL JELLY TOES!! Who thought this was a good idea!!! It’s not scary!! You can play that music all the time and have the characters act horrified but if I was there I would insult it at ever turn until it just…. gave up and went back home. Fix that mohawk bro. It looks terrible on you.

Also, Zant. MY GOD, Zant. I half blame the writers deciding to change his personality last minute for this, but also b/c when I got to him in the Twilight Palace the sudden personality change from cool, calm, collected villain to constantly spinning ballerina is so damn jarring it makes no sense.

ALSO my BIGGEST problem with him is, and swear to god this isn’t a bias of any kind I could get proof if I needed it, that every time I do Ganondorf’s levels in HW (both on the Wii U and Switch) Zant ALWAYS dies if I don’t act like his fuckin babysitter b/c he’s a fucking dumbass who couldn’t fight his way out of a wet paper bag. Ghirahim pls god turn into a giant fuckin sword and show this clown how it’s done. I deliberately never unlock him b/c he annoys me so much.
