Dark Floors/Future Visualizations
7th June 2024
I don't feel the same warmth and omnipresence of love as I once did 2 years ago. I do however feel more present, and less worried. I feel as though I have less thoughts. Have less interesting things to say. I have discovered where some of my boundaries lay, and am more willing to speak up on them. I am more willing to speak my mind. My words are unimportant and light. I miss being submerged in the warm still ocean of love. I feel like I feel less. I don't have the same waves of depression as I once did. I don't have the same dread that I lugged in the hollow pits of my stomach.
For the first time I feel in my life I see a clear vision of what I want in my future. I want to own a gallery/event space where I can host friend's exhibitions of works from all over the world. I want the space to be filled every single day with friends who become family. Young and old. All different walks of life. I want a safe space. I want to host movie screenings, serving white Russians and throwing spoons and rice. I want to host art exhibitions of all mediums and genres. I want to host sets and raves and dance parties and concerts. I want to host open mic and trivia nights and drag shows. I want to host dinner parties and serve delicious food the way my mom does. Maybe knitting clubs and painting classes and other various niche meetings. A center of the arts. Big inspiration is husets Biograf in Copenhagen. Big ask but i believe i can get there.
I realize a passion of mine is being a cheerleader. So many wonderful people to support, and the model of my mom as a rock. With all the support i can give i learn various things from each focus.
I realize this is what I was imagining. Hanging out with my friends and making art.
I'll need to study business, hopefully getting into marketing and branding will set a good path for that

Reviewing Copenhagen’s Movie Theaters
While abroad, I made sure to find the cinemas in the city that would fulfill my American movie consumption. I knew I would be studying a whole plethora of European films and I anticipated that I would want some variation so I set out to test out as many of the movie theaters I possibly could in Copenhagen. So, here is my little run down of the cinemas I visited and their secret charms.
Cinemaxx
This was the most Americanized cinema I visited and I saw Black Panther on the luxury recliners here. If you’re missing an American theater experience Cinemaxx is the way to go. There is a robust concession stand and the recliners were absolutely amazing. It’s also an extension of the mall there, so after your movie, you can always spend more money in the many shops. This theater is great for a block buster screening on an IMAX screen.
Husets Biograf
I actually visited this twice - one for a field study for my Scandinavian Moods course and second for the culmination of the DIS Film club sessions - and I enjoyed it a lot. I love this space, like absolutely in love with it. The decor of the theatre is filled with character. Instead of the classical recliners, the seating is made of old armchairs some upholstered and car seats. The character of the space reflects the character of the films shown. They have a whole host of fun screenings like Grease Sing-a-longs, The Room hate-screenings, Rocky Horror Picture Drag screenings. The Husets Biograf is within a building, Huset KBH, where all Danes come together with their friends to play board games on the first floor, watch stand up comedians, and watch dance shows. I would highly recommend this theater for a slow weekend with a bunch of friends. There is no shortage of fun.
Grand Teatret
At the last session for the DIS Film club, I won a free ticket to this movie theater to a film of my choice. I chose The Post. Just a note on The Post, I’m surprised it really wasn’t as boring as I thought it would be, but that’s neither here nor there. I do want to say Grand Teatret is a very sophisticated cinema. Your choice at the concession stand is a pastry and coffee, wine, or a soft drink. It’s for a very high-class clientele to my mind. They, also, play more art house films here and most of them are foreign language films. If you want to try your hand at reading Danish of an up and coming classic this is the place for you. Although the seating did not recline, they were extremely comfortable though I would have loved more leg space. Located a few blocks away from DIS, this theater is great for a quick showing after classes.
Bremen Theatre
During the CPH: DOX Festival, I watched the Generation Wealth documentary in this theatre. It’s a huge space, but you could fall into the trap of being stuck in the balcony seating and have poor sight lines. I liked the space with its classical almost auditorium feel, but I think its more suited for live events.
Park Bio
Here I watched, The Quiet Place which I highly recommend. Just not at a non-English speaking catered cinema. The reason I say that is on account of the Danish subtitles served almost the whole entire first half of the film and I had to flex my limited Danish vocabulary and ASL knowledge to gather what was happening at those points. But on to the cinema itself, Park Bio is located out in Osterbrø, a posher but still down to earth neighborhood of Copenhagen. I think that sentiment is reflected in this theater. You walk into the space and you feel like your intruding on someone’s home. There are knickknacks along the shelving and walls. Mirrors are everywhere discombobulating you for a second. The posters for every film - currently showing and past - adorn the walls. Once you reached the top flour, there is restaurant seating where you can order traditional and nontraditional concession food. I believe there is only one actual theater screen and it screens the more recent films. As you leave the theater, don’t hesitate to buy a poster for the film you just saw or a film you’re interested in. It’s safe to say, I miss this theater.
The Filmhouse & Cinematheque
The Filmhouse became my secret hideaway during breaks in the day and especially finals. In this building, there is the Danish Film Institute Library, a cafe, movie theaters, two restaurants, and a gift shop. The Filmhouse’s library gave a stunning view of Kungsparken, granted peace and quiet, and immersion as a local. It’s located right next to Rosenborg Gardens and you guessed it next to Rosenborg Castle. (Also, close to the best burger place in Copenhagen, Gasoline Grill!) I watched a CPH Dox screening of América in this theater and I liked it a lot. The seats had less tension so you could recline to your preferred level and the many uses of the Filmhouse won me over.

VISIONARY MEDIUM: Psychoanalysis and the Magic of Cinema
October 14-16, 2022
Husets Biograf, Copenhagen
The third Psychoanalysis, Art & the Occult conference focuses on cinema as a gateway into and out of the human mind, in all its complexity. No modern medium enchants quite as powerfully as that of the moving image. As film developed into an art form parallel to the emergence of both psychoanalysis and the late 19th century renaissance of the occult, its presence was rapidly imbued with a genuinely visionary power that continues to spellbind to this day. This event shines the light on a psychological screen filled with innovations, ideas, prisms and mirrors, revealing ever more to us about the intimate, intricate relationship between psychoanalysis, art and the occult.
In 1895, the same year Sigmund Freud published Studies on Hysteria with Josef Breuer, the Lumière brothers presented the first projected moving pictures to a paying audience, and practicing occultist William Butler Yeats published his very first collection of poetry. As Freud continued developing his theories, the film industry established itself with experimental film-making evolving alongside conventional cinema from the beginning. The early films of Georges Méliès, Hans Richter and Fritz Lang influenced generations of filmmakers, including Jonas Mekas, Luis Buñuel, Harry Smith, Ingmar Bergman, Robert Frank, Kenneth Anger, Derek Jarman, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Peter Greenaway, John Waters, Darren Aronofsky, Anna Biller and Lars von Trier.
When a filmmaker is a true artist, their vision and own unconscious processes are projected and worked through via the medium of film. The magic lantern’s cinematic spells are timeless expressions of the human condition – existing outside trends, discourses, and even the larger Zeitgeists of the times – yet resonating throughout. As Freudian cinephile Mary Wild relays in her work, films are projective surfaces engaging similar mechanisms as the classic projective tests of psychoanalysts, such as the Rorschach Inkblot Test. In the chamber of the cinema, films are projected onto screens, while audience members project their own internal worlds onto the films, identifying with the characters and enacting the drama being played out on the screen. Nowadays, screens are ubiquitous in our everyday lives, the interactive screens of computers and phones providing countless opportunities for individuals to project themselves into the digital realm in a multitude of ways never before imagined.
The Psychoanalysis, Art & the Occult series of events, curated by Dr. Vanessa Sinclair and Carl Abrahamsson, is dedicated to exploring the intersections and integration of psychoanalytic theory, the creative arts, occult practices and folk magic traditions. By inviting psychoanalysts, philosophers, artists, writers, filmmakers and magical practitioners from a variety of theoretical orientations and worldviews to discuss their work, personal experiences and areas of interest with one another, dialogue is opened up between practitioners in fields of study that traditionally rarely engage with one another though often operate in similar and complementary ways.
Topics may range from themes of the double, mirroring, projection, programming, propaganda and poetry to psychoanalysis on film, the history of cinema, celluloid tangibility, home movies, horror, underground cinema, spirit photography, the Uncanny, Cinema of Transgression, Film as a Subversive Art (a la Amos Vogel), social media, TikTok, artificial intelligence and the digital realm to deep dives into particular auteur filmmakers, photographers or artists, such as Diane Arbus, Joel-Peter Witkin, Francis Bacon, William Mortensen, Werner Herzog or Russ Meyer.

(her: Grand Teatret)
