HUNTSMAN SPIDER (Sparassidae): Olios giganteus, “giant crab spider”
[Bonus exuvia behind cut because I don’t expect anyone else to think it’s cool lol]
Tumblr media
So the legspan on the male Olios giganteus that left this exoskeleton I found had to have been at least 2 inches, almost palm-sized. Which means now that its molted, it’s bigger than that. And if there are females around here somewhere, they’re even bigger than that 😮

Sorry to burst everyones bubble, but I'm gona press doubt on that one.
I didn't find any article that stated that "only" female huntsman spiders make silk.
They just all state that huntsmans use silk for things like shelter, safety nets when moving, an egg sacks (which yes, the last point of those three is exklusively female behaviour. The first two however, aren't).
But there are also huntsman spider species who where observed using silk as a "hunting" device. (Well, more like "trapping", but you get what I mean xD)
The one I know of uses silk to stitch together leaves to hunt frogs and other smal amphibians, and that's a species behaviour that isn't female exlusive.
Tumblr media
And even the article shown in the original post (article: "Huntsman Spiders - Minibeast Wildlife") talks about an entire species of Huntsman Spiders that use silk to build shelter out of leaves. All one had to do was scrowl down one section to "Habitat".
Tumblr media
So yeeeaaah, the claim that only female Huntsman Spiders produce silk is kind of questionable.
Building daylight retreats isn't really a female only behaviour, neather is using silk for hunting prey (though that's still a pretty new observation when it comes to Huntsman Spiders).
Oh, but feel free to keep the "Huntsman is trans" thing as a headcanon! There is no harm in that normaly. I'd just be carefull when justifying it with irl facts that could be inacurate. Always double check, or at least actually readt the articles presented to you. People are quick to take things out of context online. (And keep in mind that headcanons aren't canon. )
(Also, yes, I'm nitpicky when it comes to animal facts xD I just don't like people spreading missinformation about animals. It's my personal pet peve 😅)

I mentioned I’d left out a huntsman spider I saw in Malaysia in the post below, and here it is! I spotted it on a rock beneath a small cave or overhang while on a night walk.
Tumblr media
this one had everything; legspan, “teleportation” speed, and gorgeous colors. didn’t like me very much, though!
if you notice that its left leg 3 is slightly shorter and a different color, that’s most likely because it was lost a few molts ago, but grew back over the course of said molts & is almost good as new.

had the incredible privilege of witnessing this Bronze Huntsman molting on our front gate. this was my first time seeing a spider molt in action, and also my first time encountering this species of huntsman-- extra special indeed!
Tumblr media
the process of ecdysis is a very vulnerable one for the creature, as their new exoskeleton requires time to dry and harden, leaving them at risk of injury and predation. in the photo above you can see the single thread of silk tethering her to the gate while she dangles.
Tumblr media
between her unhardened joints, her blue-green hemolymph is seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after dangling for a bit, she began to flex her legs as her fresh new exoskeleton became more firm.
Tumblr media
we found her back on the gate the next night, looking beautiful and healthy!

Adrian: (Squealing laughter)
