The Complete Alice & The Hunting of the Snark

Once upon a time, it was my ambition to collect editions of Alice by renowned illustrators. They’re two of my favorite books, so I thought it would be a cool collection to curate. But at some point, I realized that this could end up becoming not only a large collection but also potentially a very expensive one, too.

I still have a few from the collection, but I’ve gotten rid of a bunch. This is one of the few I kept. The strange thing is that I’m not much of a Ralph Steadman fan. It’s just not really my thing. His work is very much of its time, and maybe that’s what I like about this. His Alice comes across a bit like Eric Idle in drag. His Chester Cat looks like a caricature of a Conservative Party politician, which it probably is. His horse-like Hatter wears Union Jack glasses, Walkman headphones, and a bowler hat with a note that—instead of “in this style 10/6”—reads, “Can you come back next week.”

It’s all very very British. Perhaps that’s why I keep it around. There’s a case to be made, I think, that Steadman’s Alice is, in spirit, the most similar to Tenniel’s original.

I've had this sitting in my drafts box going now where for a while, but thought I'd drag this pair of cheeky bastards out today and clean them up.

So I originally saw someone do a post about Aziraphale making a "tongue-in-cheek" gesture to Crowley about "the Clue" when he was asking to take the Bentley to Edinburgh in S2E2. Just "pop up there myself and investigate." This is just after he just "popped up" from behind the Bentley to investigate whether he could take it himself to Edinburgh? That's bold of you, you cheeky angel!

He's already been teased by Crowley for calling it a Clue with a capital C, (and why we should be wary of Clues)

but Aziraphale is pretty sure he on to something here, as shown to us by the following few seconds (see screenshots below, note there is another tongue-in-cheek moment here at the beginning), just after the archangels leave the book shop in S2E2 having questioned him over the cause of the 25 lazurii miracle. He puts on the single of "Every Day" he got from Maggie to listen to while he examines newspaper clippings from around the world in different languages, each of them reporting about this strange occurrence in Edinburgh where a jukebox "miraculously" seems to turn every record put into it into Buddy Holly's "Every Day:

The parallel "tongue-in-cheek" moment from Crowley happens in S2E1, during the chat with Lord Beelzebub in Hell, while he is lounging across the two thrones that they have installed in their office (and if you are wondering about the thrones there is a nice little post about them here).

Here's what Beelzebub is saying just beforehand:

Well, that's one way of putting it...Crowley knows Gabriel has "vanished" not once, but twice! Firstly in body and secondly his memory has vanished, too. Oh boy. But Crowley is in a dangerous situation here so he's he's acting in his cool-but-alert mode.

Then Crowley uses this lovely, slightly archaic, expression:

"It's a big universe, lots of places an archangel on the lam could have a wonderful time and never be seen again."

"On the lam" is a term that means "in flight from the authorities." In flight? Get it? Go Roger the Stunt Fly! Bwahahaha! Tongue in cheek, indeed, Crowley. *snort*

I would also hazard a guess that the second half of that sentence is a second ref to the Hunting of the Snark in S2E1 (I propose that there one to do with the Eccles cakes here). Gabriel has gone hunting his Snark and accidentally tripped up in front of a Boojum, and has "softly and suddenly vanish[ed] away, and [may] never be met with again."

To be honest, if one of the students in my Junior Duck Stamp classes ever turned in something like this, I would be elated.

(For a bit of background--a few years ago the Federal Duck Stamp contest rules were changed so that artists HAD to include some element of waterfowl hunting in their entries, whether they were comfortable with it or not. The above artwork may be my favorite example of malicious--or at least snarky--compliance.)

DUCKVEMBER DAY 04: Game Duck

That feel when you're sick and might have a fever, but you still need to get work done. So to avoid doing proper lineart, you instead spend hours making said pic look like an old school video game.

but what interested me most was him saying the Hunted and Cold would be friends. I've never really thought about that pairing before but it does work. The Hunted's main thing being keeping the body alive could help balance out the Cold's general blasé nature when it comes to death, while being rational enough (focussing on his senses and what he knows is real) for the Cold to actually take him seriously. While the Cold being able to push the Hunted to act somewhat like the Stubborn, but slightly less strongly. He's confident that they can get the job done, and with the Hunted keeping them alive they could get a lot done without either really getting sick of the other. Just two reliable guys.

A little off topic but I think they'd work pretty well as a trio with Paranoid too, given a little time for Paranoid to get used to it. Cold's confidence plus Hunted's survival instinct could give him something reliable to work with, and I think he could help him by pointing out when they're going to far in either direction and going to get themselves hurt, as both can be rather single minded (on different things, mind you, but definitelythings that could leave them with blind spots) while Paranoid thinks of every possibility and could probably bring up flaws in any given plan that the others wouldn't notice, and at least Hunted would probably take it into consideration if its going to get them hurt or killed. Like a scared little peer reviewer of any plans the other two would execute

Full name Ser Circe Cecil Snark (He/They/It), the snark is a creature from a far off island. After a series of various events, they're invited to attend NRC- only, due to his extensive knowledge of blot and it's love for attempting to understand thoughts and emotions, Crowley makes the wonderous decision to have them serve as the school counselor/therapist. Temporarily, of course! He'll be a student eventually! (He won't.)

It has been SUCH a happy season in our family! We've celebrated 5 birthdays -- me, Iva, Jannes, Hosanna, and Immanuel! Isn't it sweet that my two sets of twins have their birthdays so close? And I'm a twin too -- my family truly has been blessed!

Little Immanuel and Hosanna are still so sweet! Hosanna is so servant-hearted, and when she's not playing with her siblings or helping out, she loves to learn about animals or even go outside and find some little critters to care for! I'm sure she'd love to marry a vet or a farmer when she's older, so she can help out! And with all that gorgeous blonde hair and her sweet nature, he'll be a lucky man! Immanuel is going to be such a strong leader when he's older -- he's just like Natan at his age! He can be a little challenging to manage, but it's always good to have another proper little boy running around outside.

Jannes, on the other hand, still hasn't grown out of being too shy and timid for a boy. He likes to sit inside and read, and we have to keep a close eye on what he's reading, to make sure it's all God-fearing and appropriate. He's also too eager to help out with things that really are women's work - it's very good-natured but he'll not be a good headship with an attitude like that!

Iva is still our problem child, but I think the Lord has done some work on breaking her spirit, and she's now much better at being obedient and helpful than she was as a little girl. However, she still struggles with having a cheerful spirit, and she isn't good at putting other's needs above her own. We'll have to pray that this changes or she'll never get a husband (she also needs to lose some weight for this same issue). We're also praying that she'll develop a less vain and immodest spirit. She was allowed to buy her own clothes as a birthday present, and the skirt she picked was far too short, and needs a underskirt. She's not too happy about this, but mothers need to protect their daughters' dignity and countenance.

And I've turned 40! While entering a new season of life is always bittersweet, I am so excited to see what God has planned for me in my next few years. We pray every day to be blessed with a new baby, but I'll be content with however many children God decides to bless me with, as my mama years are going to soon over. Even though this is a sadness, having grown-up children means weddings and grandchildren soon enough. And nothing makes my heart happier than knowing my children are on the path the Lord has for them.
