goddd the trope of “we could always rely on each other and you were the person i trusted most in the world but then you chose someone else over me and our relationship has never been the same” always hits me so hard, but ESPECIALLY when there are queer undertones to relationship one but then heteronormativity wins out. like god it’s such a sucker punch. so many queer people have experienced that really close same sex relationship where you thought you were going to be with that person together, even if you didn’t even realize it was romantic at the time, but then they became interested in the opposite sex and everything changed.

Is this "the first human-made textbook"?

Huge drawings of touchable animal tracks would be an ideal teaching tool for young hunters & trackers. These rock carvings in Namibia are hard to date, but the paper estimates they are at least 5000 to 7000 years old.

The authors of the paper sought out the assistance of local hunter and trackers to better identify the animals represented in the rock art. The range of species identified and the specificity of the depicted species was remarkable, showing the detail and depth of human knowledge of the natural world even thousands of years ago. (The trackers could tell the age and sex of many of the animals represented by the prints.)

Some of the carvings are in a narrow crevice, almost like it was a "test" where the student could move through the prints identifying them by touch. (that's just my guess for how they used it, the authors of the paper are more circumspect in their ideas about what this was for)

Some of the prints are from animals who no longer live in the region, possibly pushing the age of the site deeper into the past.

TL;DR: you can’t compare hating dean to hating sam

the difference between people who hate dean and people who hate sam is that it seems like most dean “haters” still enjoy his character. they’re just rightfully critical of his actions (he’s abusive, i’m scared of/for you if you think he isn’t) and the narrative bias towards him (because someone has to hold him accountable). part of what makes him/the show fun to watch and dissect is the horrible way he treats others while still making you invested in his character. the audience puts up with, or even justifies, his behavior because we’ve grown attached to him (sound familiar?). it’s disturbing and it brings back the horror that was missing from the “family is hell” show (but if you just want to watch the “perfect found family” show then idk what to say lol)

on the other hand, it seems like sam “haters” tend to dislike him with little nuance. people are allowed to like dean more and find sam annoying/boring but you have to separate sam’s personality from his actions/opinions within the family dynamic or else you need to do some self-reflection (& read some sam meta about victim blaming). of course there are those who’ve made up their minds on this due to shipping brain but there are plenty of other people who feel this way. something particularly annoying is equating hating dean to hating sam while ignoring the clear power imbalance in their relationship.

anyway. if everyone can wrap their heads around this and lift the curse then we can finally be free from this cycle. cycle…hey wait a minute—

is there any death in the rewrite that you consider to be really graphic? where do you draw the line in the violence of a character's death?

Hmmm... Probably Tigerstar honestly! The cats wrote a song about his organs falling out.

I think when it comes to the "line" of a character's death, it's very subjective. Me and every other kid who read WC pogged out when Tigerstar had a really drawn out, horrific death on-screen, but I'm still haunted by Sootfur with his broken leg, falling down towards a badger while Squilf couldn't save him and seeing the aftermath of his "sightless eyes" when the animal moved off him.

One of those was objectively less graphic, but imo a LOT more harrowing. I think emotions are a lot more important in how deaths are received by an audience than the actual blood and guts, which I think gives you a decent idea of what you're gonna get here.

I think Leopardstar's rock concert is the "ceiling" of how intensely I describe deaths. I think that one's pretty graphic, but it's for a reason. The point is that it's a brutal killing that haunts Mistystar, you get me? And I try to write "around" the gore, describing sounds, the rest of the body, etc.

There is also cosmic/body horror with the Ancestor Rats, and more importantly, BB!Cats do food processing. They skin dead animals and separate the organs and such. When I get around to doing an entry on animal fat, I would also like to show WHERE in the body the fat is stored on certain animals. It's a lot more important to nutrition than you think it is.

BUT whenever I feel like I'm "around" Leopardstar's Boulder Appointment or an Ancestor Rat, I always always tag that. Less "violent" things like the song about the organs (Tiger's In A Heap) and more gentle food processing (like an offhanded mention of removing entrails or skinning) isn't tagged.

If I ever end up including a "diagram" of where fat is stored in the body or "how to properly skin a small rodent" It will be tagged as gore and I'd try to stay tasteful to begin with, I would ABSOLUTELY never drop something like that on anyone untagged and unwarned.

There's a lot of potential here; would he be crushed at finding out when he wakes up? it hitting yoojin that he truly had to leave his brother alone for so many years and he's still doing fine? yoojin thinking that it's proof that he was holding down yoohyun after all? would that prompt him to abandon his tries at being a hunter when he finds that it was yoohyun footing the hospital bills? the crushing guilt at being the one supported by his younger brother instead of the other way round?

It took all morning but Adam tracked the hellish bear down. Adam was always a large man, he was created that way and death made him even taller. So when the bear stood on its hide legs and towered over him by a good three feet Adam nearly shit himself.

He steadied his nerves and thrusted his spear into the monster’s chest. Oh the bear did not like that. Adam found himself holding back the large and deadly venomous claws from scratching at his flesh. The beast’s jaws snapping at his head, just about reaching.

The ridge under Adam feet was crumbling. He pushed with all his might to turn them, to force the great beast to the edge and let gravity do Adam’s work for him.

There was a deafening roar as the side of the mountain slid away, taking the bear with it.

Adam barely stepped back in time and waited for the ground to settle a bit before taking up his spear once more and sliding down the cliff side on his own.

The beast was not dead but stunned. Adam made short work of burying the spearhead into the demon bear’s neck. Letting it bleed out.

Then he got to work proper.

He cut the skin from the base of the tail up to near the mouth, then from the paws to the cut in the abdomen. He gutted the creature carefully first. Then Adam severed the feet from the carcass but left them attached to the hide, then worked on peeling the skin off the hind legs and worked going forward.

Wrapping to keep clean and hanging the meat to cool, Adam went back to the skin. Scraping off the fat.

Back on earth he would have kept it. But it was useless these days. He salted the hide.

His work for now being done. The imps he hired to help transport everything came when he radioed for them. They carried the meat but Adam took the hide. It was special. It was nice in these modern times that he could hire a butcher and a taxidermist for the next part of the job.

A few days later he and a delivery imp were back at the hotel.

“Oh you’re back. How was the trip?” Charlie looked up from her conversation with Lucifer at the dinning table.

“Successful. I killed the problem bear. Brought some of the meat back for you.” The imp hefted it onto the table and Adam signed that the job was complete so the imp could leave.

“I left most of it with the town and the farmer the bear injured. It’s not the best meat but meat is meat. It’ll help replace some of what the bear took in livestock.” Adam dropped the cape of the bear into Lucifer’s lap. “For you.”

“Oh! Umm. Thank you. Wow this sure is a lot of bear.” Lucifer tried grabbing at the skin but there was just so much and he was rather small.

Adam had been right, Lucifer did look cute when he was flustered. “It was no big deal.”

He didn’t know what people complained about. Flirting was easy. Kill a bear, save a village, field dress the animal, present the skin as a gift to your chosen mate and meat to his child to prove you’re a good provider who can keep them safe and fed. Easy.
