May was rescued by @fuck.your.excuses from a free craigslist add. @darkmountainsanctuary and Rooster Sanctuary are helping May to get her highly specialized, surgical, orthopedic beak repair done, so she can get the best chance at recovery. Unfortunately, the jaw bones of a chicken do not heal well and they don’t do well holding pins. We are still giving her the best shot. Credit to @rowdygirlsanctuary : We never ate our own cows. A couple years before I went vegan I questioned Tommy all the time about various aspects of the ranching business. Year after year it became increasingly more difficult for me to participate. One such conversation we had revolves around the fact that we never ate our own cows. It made no sense to me that we bought our “humanely raised beef” from the market when we had our own grass fed, “humanely raised” cows at the ranch. One day I pressured him until he answered me, and I was shocked by his response—“I can’t eat my own cows because I KNOW THEM”. That is really messed up when you think about it. So, I pushed my husband at the time to pick one of our cows to be slaughtered! In my pre-vegan mind, I was trying everything I could to rationalize the ranching business. I was trying to find a way to redeem myself of participating in this act of unnecessary violence towards Gods docile creatures. Tommy was infuriated at the time! He didn’t want to choose, but I forced him to do so by saying that “if I was going to be in this business with him that we were going to start slaughtering our own animals!” Tommy finally chose Lucky, Rowdy Girls first born. Lucky has a really bad leg because he hurt it when he escaped the red trailer back in February of 2014. Then he got lucky again because I went vegan in October of 2014. The more I pushed the envelope the crazier i became. Falling in love with the cows has been the greatest blessing in my life. Loving them has healed my broken soul. We are all broken by family traditions, culture, religion, etc. We come into this world a blank slate. We are taught normalized violence. It’s time to teach normalized “nonviolence”!! Little makes me happier than seeing these girls enjoy their freedom. They spent the first 18 months of their lives crammed into battery cages, with no ability to feel the sunshine or bathe in the cool soil. While thousands of their sisters were gassed that day, these girls made it out. Most know that the conditions for dairy cows on factory farms are cruel and inhumane in many ways. But how about the so-called humane alternatives? That's what everyone is asking about. With all the new humane claims and certifications on the market portraying a return to traditional dairy farming with cows grazing on beautiful green pastures, what does this best case scenario really look like?

Who owns the definition of humane lies at the core of what many of us are challenging: a corruption of the animal rights movement by many of the larger organizations (see http://www.humanemyth.org). We are undercut with outdated perceptions still in common use that a death is humane if the killing is done in a manner that prevents or diminishes suffering with instantaneous or near-instantaneous unconsciousness to render the individual insensate to pain. There is little accounting for the psychological state of suffering in confinement, little accounting for the suffering of others who lose the presence of the one killed, little accounting of the extensive cruelties that remain throughout their lives, and no weighing of the harm caused when domesticated and wild life are taken unnecessarily before their natural life ends.

As witnesses we know this harm well. The individual who was surprised by an unexpected death does not have to realize it was an injustice—because we do. We are responsible for that lethal act, so our knowing that injustice, that taking of a young unfinished life, is not humane. It wouldn’t be called humane if you killed me with a sudden death when I was ten, or now. It is an artificial distinction if you make it true for humans and not for individuals from other species (a case of speciesism). An unexploited right to life free of human violations is one of the “rights” we share with individuals from other species.

They perform these and other difficult tricks because they’re afraid of what will happen if they don’t. _ To force animals to perform, circus trainers abuse them with whips, tight collars, muzzles, electric prods, bullhooks (heavy batons with a sharp steel hook on one end), and other painful tools of the circus trade. Video footage of animal training sessionsshows that elephants are beaten with bullhooks and shocked with electric prods. Circuses easily get away with such routine cruelty because the government doesn’t monitor training sessions and handlers are cautious when they’re in public. _ Circuses travel nearly year-round, in all weather extremes, sometimes for days at a time. While in transit, the animals are confined to boxcars, trailers, or trucks, where they may not have access to basic necessities, such as food, water, and veterinary care. Elephants are chained, and big cats are imprisoned in cramped, filthy cages, in which they eat, drink, sleep, defecate, and urinate—all in the same place. And there’s no relief once the animals reach a venue, where they remain caged and are chained in arena basements and parking lots. _ Frustrated by years of beatings, bullhooks, and shackles, some elephants snap. And when an elephant rebels, trainers can’t protect themselves—or the public. Elephants have bolted from circuses, run amok through streets, crashed into buildings, attacked members of the public, and injured and killed handlers.
