Jour 12 : Télécommande
Day 12 : Remote
---
Traditional drawing traced with pencil then inked with Pigma Micron pens, from size 005 (0.25 mm) to size 8 (0.50 mm).
Markus (Detroit: Become Human) led Jericho into a battle for their basic rights as androids. Unfortunately, the offensive was a failure and he found himself alone and injured in a store, while the armies gathered outside. He only has one way left to give the androids a future, the dirty bomb whose remote control he holds in his hand.

R.I.M. Job - Film Review: BlackBerry ★★★★
Have you noticed the glut of films about innovators? Those real life dramas have met with varying degrees of success in recent years with such titles as Air, The Social Network, Tetris, The Big Short, and The Founder. We seem fascinated by the process when that spark of genius ignites or when hubris takes over. Enter BlackBerry, the distinctly Canadian entry in this list of cautionary true stories, this time about a generation-defining invention told in a very smart, highly engaging way.
Think Silicon Valley meets The Office with harsher overhead lighting and you’ll get the picture. It’s 1996 in sleepy Waterloo, Ontario, where young Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) heads up a small software company called Research In Motion, abbreviated R.I.M., which deliciously never merits a single comment nor should it for the humor of that to pay dividends for the film’s entire running time. Mike, a quintessential tech nerd, has a terribly incompetent yet loyal right hand man Doug (Matt Johnson, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Matthew Miller based on the novel Losing The Signal), and together they are running their company into the ground due to their terrible business sense. Lucky for them, they have invented the world’s first smartphone and just need someone who can sell it.
Enter Jim Balsillie (Glenn Howerton), the meanest corporate raider you will ever encounter and just the man for the R.I.M. job, if only Mike can come up with a prototype in time. Little do they know that Jim was fired from his last gig, hasn’t met a phone he hasn’t smashed, and figuratively is the poster child for toxic masculinity years before that word was ever coined. It’s a business deal and a contract forged in hell, but as a piece of movie entertainment, it’s made in heaven.
Jim, all suits, gold watches, and expensive cars, strong-arms himself into a Co-C.E.O. position, bulldozes his way into Mike’s world of overgrown children who have grown accustomed to movie nights, toys and other childish ways and brings in people who can make their business work. Chief among them is Purdy, a gloriously intimidating Michael Ironside, as their new C.O.O., who can emasculate anyone before ever uttering a single word. Jim, however, doesn’t understand the tech of it all, leaving that up to Mike, but his failing is that he’s also not the most scrupulous of businessmen either, making less than legal decisions along the way as their BlackBerry starts to dominate the market.
It’s fun to revisit that time in the early 2000s when the world marveled at this phone with it’s clickety-clackety keyboard and small screen and thought that nothing could surpass it. It’s fun to watch Cary Elwes as a rival Palm Pilot executive attempt a hostile takeover, especially when we know the fates of both technologies. Remember those unwieldy stylos? You also never forget that the iPhone is just over the horizon waiting to tear this whole thing down.
Though it all, we get a trio of fantastic performances. Baruchel finds a touching vulnerability in Mike, a genius with a great idea, a man obsessed with the details who lacks the confidence to communicate his vision. He has a heart and you feel his struggle when it comes time to make cutthroat decisions such as leaving his friend out of an important pitch meeting. It’s a stunning, humane performance. Johnson, who with his cinematographer, Jared Saab, keep things loose and handheld, often adopting an observational stance. His performance, however, is of the comic powerhouse variety one typically associates with Seth Rogen. He’s the stooge who clearly will never outgrow his headband but will always, always, always have his pal’s best interests in mind. We all need a Doug in our lives, but sometimes the Mikes of the world just can’t or don’t see it.
Finally, Howerton, best known for It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, is the real revelation here. Almost unrecognizable with his shaved head and thousand yard stare, he gives a galvanizing performance as the kind of guy you you want in your corner as long as that corner is actually nowhere near your actual corner. He’s the scariest movie monster since Freddie Krueger yet doesn’t draw a drop of blood. He’s the type of character who’s scary because he simply lingers on in your imagination long after the memory of its title handheld device fades away. He, like BlackBerry itself, is, if I may invent a new word, funnerving.

There is no way Jamie Hewlett looked at that stylo model and said "Yeah that'll do"
I firmly believe whoever conceived stylo Murdoc was under the influence of some mysterious substance, there is no way a sane human being conceives this
Murdoc 3D Model Tier List
God tier: strobelite
(gif by unclemudsy!) streamlined. smooth. wonderful simplification of the character design. murdoc is actually palatable and dare i say it, pleasing to look at. the motion capture is cool and he gets bonus points for his stupid wonky eye in the interviews.
Good tier: feel good inc. hologram
truer to murdoc’s grossness, but still fantastic. high production value, very expressive and detailed. that dracula-style entrance. that ugly tongue waggle. that smug look on his face. that naked-except-cape look. love it
Okay tier: Clint Eastwood hologram
he’s a little plastic-y and odd-looking, but he’s an impressive feat of technology for his time. very cartoony and sinister. really enjoy the creepy head snap.
Bad tier: stylo/dressing room
i legit dont want to show this one in motion. the texture of his skin is hyper-realistically awful. his eyes are bugging out of his head. his proportions are so fucking strange and gangly. it’s ugly and not in a charming way. thumbs down
Absolutely fucking unforgivable tier: doyathing
this is the worst thing ive ever fucking laid eyes on. might even be the same one as dressing room (can’t tell) yet somehow worse in every single way. he looks like a dog with mange. he looks like he just emerged from a swamp. if there were a contest held for ugliest CGI model ever created, i would show whoever’s in charge this image and they would cancel the entire contest. affronting. repulsive.
that being said, whoever sculpted this model has definitely seen murdoc in person

An unrestrained and creative adaptation of the classical story is typical of Gopher Troupe. When watching such plays, you will feel that the scriptwriter is still willing to eulogise the beauty though she has experienced the darkness in human’s hearts.

Oh, it’s because I had a dream last night where Tick-tock turned into a Typhon with a hundred heads, all of them nagging at me for drafts at the same time… Boo-hoo… Greeting (Noon): Sasami gently plucked the dewdrops from the lily of the valley and crafted a bracelet for the stars… Huh! Is it noon already? Good afternoon, Director! Sorry, I get startled easily… Greeting (Evening): Stars are the fireflies nurtured by the sky, and dewdrops are the stars planted by fairies… Hey, Director, good evening. Greeting (Midnight): Did inspiration strike in the middle of the night? If there’s nothing urgent tomorrow morning, staying up a bit late should be fine… I’ll be with you, Director. Weekends: Is today the Director’s day off! Revered Director, I am Momo, an almost-famous writer. Thank you for helping me get out of Crysalis' control. I heard you need to adapt classic plays and create original ones. Sasami and I will do our best to serve the troupe. Please take care of us. (Attached to the letter is a file with a million words.)

Toubab Krewe at Levitt Pavilion, Dayton, Ohio, Aug. 16, 2024
Toubab Krewe carries with it a sonic travelogue of globetrotting sounds.
The quintet from Asheville, N.C., brought music from its travels and studies in Western Africa and culled material from its three studio albums to curate a nine-song, 90-minute, all-instrumental performance for the small-but-enthusiastic crowd that attended the Toubabs’ free Aug. 16 gig at Levitt Pavilion. By the time the homestretch rolled around, a rainbow of humanity spanning from young children to folks in their eighth decade were dancing on the concrete that separates the stage from the grass.
Listeners who closed their eyes and let the breeze with the slightest hints of autumn carry the music to them were transported to a lush, beachfront performance space miles - continents - away from downtown Dayton, Ohio.
With Justin Perkins on kora, kamelngon and percussion; Drew Heller on electric guitar and keys; Justin Kimmel on electric bass and keys; Terrance Houston on drums; and onstage emcee Luke Quaranta on percussion, Toubab Krewe bring a motley crew of influences and deliver them with virtuosic intensity. There are very few solos as the band is a powerhouse rhythmic machine; conversely, it could also be said that the Toubabs are five soloists whose aural musings just so happen to turn themselves into full-blown compositions designed to blow minds.
In that regard, listening to Toubab Krewe sober is a bit like listening to Paul Simon’s Graceland on acid. The music snakes and curls from the beaches of Jamaica to the townships of Africa to the rock ’n’ roll auditoriums of the United States.
“Stylo” was powered by triple percussion. The epic “Maliba” was dedicated to late kora master Toumani Diabaté and spanned the band’s many influences. And “Hang Tan,” known to NPR listeners from “Milk Street Radio,” dug a groove so deep, dancers’ feet might’ve been close to Asia as they romped and stomped to the Krewe’s undeniable pulsations.
And when a local musician moved from the crowd to the stage to transform Toubab Krewe into an eight-armed percussive beast on the encore, everyone was right back in Dayton, celebrating their collective trip in the universal language of music.
See more photos on Sound Bites’ Facebook page.

Album Review: Plastic Beach by Gorillaz
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s exceptionally innovative endeavor with their animated genre-bending group Gorillaz reaches an all-time high of their records. Plastic Beach is a perfectly executed concept album complete with an army of collaborators including Lou Reed, Mick Jones & Paul Simonon, Bobby Womack, Snoop Dogg, and many others. Their first two releases, Gorillaz and Demon Days, were also incredible and extremely influential, but the records and tracklists became much more focused and organized as time went on. The dreamy, vivacious atmosphere saturated with synth and electronic rock. It captures the listener’s imagination perfectly and holds interest throughout, dabbling in many different genres and a variety of track styles. It begins with the ethereal “Orchestral Intro” that leads you into Gorillaz’ dream world like a ship coming into the bay, and it was nominated for a Grammy in 2011 for best Pop Instrumental Performance. Another opening track, “Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach”, which features Snoop Dogg and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, sets the futuristic tone for the rest of the album. “White Flag” features a heavenly introduction from the National Orchestra for Arabic Music and verses from Bashy and Kano.
“Rhinestone Eyes”, the fantastic and vibrant track regarding global warming and the environment is definitely one of the first highlights from this album (originally intended to be a single). Another highlight is the successful single “Stylo” featuring the late Bobby Womack and Mos Def, casually political and conceptual. “Superfast Jellyfish”, the colorful, fun, and vibrant track featuring Welsh musician Gruff Rhys brings attention to the toxic manipulation of the music industry - the jellyfish a metaphor for the easily manipulated musicians who submit to the industry. Throughout the track, Gorillaz urges creators to stick to their roots, stay creative, and reject the industry’s norms. “Empire Ants”, featuring Little Dragon, is another fabulous highlight with blissful vocals, a gorgeous instrumental, and a dark meaning. Albarn describes how our society has become similar to a colony of “empire ants” who work to move the machine along. “Glitter Freeze”, which title is referenced throughout the album as a desired place or state of being where the world is beautiful, but still fake, plastic, and superficial. “Some Kind of Nature”, a positively upbeat and more sunshiney track featuring the late great Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground about the human nature to corrupt. Next up is the incredibly successful “On Melancholy Hill”, a beautifully nostalgic track thats simplicity creates a bittersweet atmosphere, brought together by the relaxed vocals and catchy instrumental. “Broken”, a traditionally touching track, one of Albarn’s specialties, describes the loss of a person, a group, or a thing (tangible or not). It could be determined differently, but I believe that either from Murdoc or 2D’s perspective, they may have lost the passion and excitement they once had while making music. After all of the chaos that led to Plastic Beach, the assumed loss of guitarist Noodle and disappearance of Russel, the creation of Cyborg Noodle - they feel as though they are piecing together what they have left - trying to imitate the “glitter freeze”, or the perfect reality, but falling short. “Sweepstakes” is mostly composed of a spoken word verse by Mos Def. The title track, an incredible song that again focuses on pollution and cyberculture. This track features Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash. “To Binge”, featuring Little Dragon once again, is an incredibly heartfelt and vulnerable track with a beautifully heartbreaking story of how addiction, something Albarn has heavily struggled with, and how it affects relationships and those who you are close to. This is my personal favorite song from the album and one of my favorite tracks from Gorillaz and in Damon’s career. “Cloud of Unknowing”, featuring an amazing performance from Bobby Womack that serves as a final reflection on Plastic Beach. The album closes with “Pirate Jet”, a visualization of the listeners leaving Plastic Beach, which represents not so much a place, but a different perspective and outlook on life and the reality of our world today. Overall, I think this album is one of the greatest displays of creativity I’ve seen in records of today, backed up by talented songwriting and vocas. It has the perfect ratio of pop, radio-friendly hits that still remain far from the commercial production of singles we usually see, the vulnerable and moving pieces and everything in between. I would rate this album a 9 / 10, as some of the tracks are lacking a bit for me, but still making it my favorite Gorillaz album to date and one of my favorites from Damon Albarn’s career.

i still think it's one of the biggest crimes in human history that plastic beach never got a b-sides compilation like the first 2 gorillaz albums did, and Especially that the demos for the album that damon played on the radio in early 2009 never got a proper release.. 🙁
like picture this: lil 12 y/o me was an absolute fucking gorillaz Maniac - their debut, g sides, demon days and d-sides were the only cds i owned and all i ever listened to, i'd read rise of the ogre abt a dozen times, i spent most of my time on the computer watching their music videos and messing round on the kong studios website.. so when i heard that damon was gonna be on the radio playing new gorillaz music, i was fucking Ready for it 😳
so on the night they were debuting, i remember going onto the computer and onto the radio 1 website and tuning in.. and i was fucking blown away, it was like the most exciting thing that had ever happened 2 me 😭 two of the tracks were demos of what became "broken" and "stylo" (then called "binge") but my favourite was one called "electric shock" 🥹
at some point they then got uploaded to 2009 era youtube, and i listened to them Obsessively over the next year.. i can't find the exact videos anymore, but i'm p sure they just played the songs over this picture of murdoc, which i think they also displayed on the radio 1 website when they were premiering?? 🤔

(wait nvm i found at least one of the videos, the "broken" demo, uploaded in march 2009 😆)
then fast forward to march 2010, and plastic beach finally coming out.. my dad went and bought me the cd after he finished work on the day it came out and bought it back home, and i listened to it right away and it was so fucking good!!!! ..but i was a little disappointed at least that, altho stylo and broken had made the album, electric shock hadn't.. 😔
so i waited, thinking that well, at least there'd probably be a b-sides compilation with it on eventually?? but doncamatic came out, then the fall, then the singles collection, then doyathing, and then gorillaz went silent.. and still nothing 🙁
idk when i actually gave up hope abt a compilation coming out, according to the gorillaz wiki, the first fanmade "sea-sides" compilation came out in 2012, and i'm p sure i jumped right on that.. but it still rly is a shame nothing official ever came out.. 😭

The topic that I have for the blog assignment is the French New Wave of Cinema. In the picture above are some popular films that influenced the film movement. So what exactly was the French New Wave? It was a film movement that rose to popularity in the late 1950s in Paris, France. The idea was to give directors full creative control over their work, allowing them to favor improvisational storytelling instead of strict narratives. In Alexandre Astruc's manifesto he writes "cinema was in the process of becoming a new means of expression on the same level as painting and the novel...This is why I would like to call this new age of cinema the age of the caméra-stylo." This essay inspired many French filmmakers to start experimenting with new ideas of how we should shoot and view cinema. These new filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard, Agnès Varda, Éric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, and Claude Chabrol wanted to experiment with film form and style but didn't have the budgets to do it. Instead of trying to find the money to get high level gear and equipment they decided to use portable equipment to have a run-and-gun style. This led to a unique style of film that had fragmented, discontinuous editing, and long takes that allowed actors to explore a scene. The combination of realism and commentary allowed these movies to have unique characters, motives, and even endings that were not so clear-cut. When it comes to these French new wave films, some recognizable characteristics stick out and signify which movies fall into the New Wave category. The main one is the rejection of classical filmmaking, with a focus on experimental and/or avant-garde techniques. These films also featured existential themes that were in direct contrast to what film was doing previously with the Hollywood golden era. These films wanted to showcase the individual and the chaos of human existence. So what did these films mean for the rest of the world? Even after the movies stopped being made, it inspired many other international movements including the New Hollywood era. You can see these influences across Woody Allen, Spike Lee, and even in the mumblecore films of the 90s and 2000s. To summarize, at the movement's heart was the idea that anyone should be able to make a movie, and that sentiment has lived on today. Overall this new film design led to many interesting and artistic films that still hold up today.
