Tumblr media
a rich businessman, Ramkishen Chaturvedi (Alok Nath) and his wife, Mamta (Reema Lagoo) live happily in a big joint family with their three sons, Vivek (Mohnish Bahl), Prem (Salman Khan), and Vinod (Saif Ali Khan), and their married daughter Sangeeta (Neelam). family harmony is shaken when Mamta’s insecurities arise, triggered by an incident in Sangeeta’s in-laws’ home. misunderstandings arise, threatening to separate the siblings.

rewatched December 8th, 2024 on netflix
Tumblr media
feels less like watching a movie and more like attending a grand family gathering. from the very first scene, it’s warm, colourful, and full of love. the characters laugh together, eat together, sing together, and dance together, making everything feel lively and joyful. I felt like I was part of this big family, and I was swept into their world of love and unity. the best part of this movie is the way it shows family life. everyone is ridiculously kind, well-mannered, and cheerful. it’s almost like a fantasy where people break into choreographed dances at the drop of a hat, and no one ever seems to run out of energy or happiness. as unrealistic as it is, it’s a lovely escape from reality. it made me wish life could be that simple and harmonious. the iconic road trip scene, where they sing "ABCD… I Love You," really brought back childhood memories for me. I remember asking my dad to buy a mini bus for our family after watching that scene. of course, it never happened ahaha, but this movie made me dream of travelling together as a family, laughing and singing along the way. for a moment, I forgot all the drama and just enjoyed the innocence and fun of this big family.
Tumblr media
of course, there’s drama in the movie too. not everyone likes seeing others happy, so there are people who try to create problems. the twist about Vivek being a step-son and the way Mamta’s insecurities create misunderstandings are emotional to watch. even though it’s sad, it’s also heartwarming to see how the brothers’ love for each other stays strong. it’s the kind of emotional journey that makes me smile through my tears. Sapna, played by Karisma Kapoor, is such a standout character. she’s so lively, fun, and mischievous, always bringing a smile to everyone’s face. her chemistry with Vinod (Saif Ali Khan) is adorable and adds a lot of charm to the movie. lastly, Hum Saath Saath Hain might be unrealistic and overly dramatic, but it’s also incredibly heartwarming. it makes me feel like the world is good and people are kind, even if only for three hours. it’s not just about the plot; it’s about the feelings it gives me. watching this movie is like wrapping myself in a warm blanket of love, laughter, and togetherness.
Tumblr media
final verdict: I totally loved it!!

"I was amazed when I saw Karishma Kapoor wearing a lehenga similar to my mom's wedding attire what Karishma wore in the year 1999 'Hum Saath-Saath Hain'. It was then that I discovered my mom's lehenga was inspired by Karishma's Maiya Yashoda costume in the movie. The lehenga is exquisite, featuring intricate silver thread embroidery. I'm looking forward to wearing it on a special occasion in the future."

ramasha do you have any bollywood movie recs?? 🎤
omgggg em im so honored you thought of me!! 🫶🏼🩷
tbh i've sorta been on a journey of watching more bollywood (and south asian cinema in general), since there was a huge chunk of my life where i just never really kept up with releases and was sorta discouraged from watching it so my taste isn't the Most diverse (in terms of genres and years) but i'm working on it 😭 that said, here's my attempt at giving you a lot of different options, so hopefully there's something here that strikes your fancy hehe :3
lots will be under the cut bc im a huge YAPPER.... sorry. also, some of these haven't really aged that well and are sometimes more of just a nostalgic fav and/or ones i think are iconic so... take some of these recs with a grain of salt
some of my bigger personal faves:
om shanti om (2007) — it may hit more if you have a bit more exposure to bollywood cinema and its industry bc it references it a lot, but i still think it's an enjoyable movie regardless! (yes i am biased bc this is one of my fav bollywood movies ever + a huge nostalgic fav. plus SRK and deepika padukone.. can't go wrong there!)
haider (2014) — this movie is SOOOO good! i highly rec it 💞 it's an adaptation of hamlet, set within the backdrop of the 1995 kashmir conflicts. this is actually a part of trilogy of shakespeare adaptations by the director: the other two are maqbool (2003) which is macbeth and omkara (2006) which is othello
main hoon na (2004) — another SRK nostalgic fav
ghajini (2008) — it rips off christopher nolan's memento but i think it adds a lot of its own stuff too and i have a soft spot for it 😭
andhadhun (2018)
kahaani (2012)
tumbbad (2018)
amar singh chamkila (2024)
3 idiots (2009) — the most likely one that non regular bollywood watchers will know and deservedly so imo
gully boy (2019)
hum saath saath hain (1999) — okay not objectively the best movie.. but its a hugely nostalgic and comfort movie for me and i think its great if you wanna watch something that's heartfelt and doesn't have a ton of high stakes conflict
maine pyar kiya (1989) — same as above ☝🏼 i watched this one a lot as a kid
jab we met (2007)
devdas (2002) — worth it for at least the beautiful cinematography, costumes, and gorgeous talented cast
fanaa (2006) — plot is kinda messy at times but it was a real angst machine for me as a kid 😭
photograph (2019)
sir (2018)
bulbbul (2020) — tw for a rape scene though. sorry for the spoiler but it was genuinely really harrowing for me to watch so i think its important to mention
misc other movies i've seen:
qala (2022)
dil bole hadippa! (2009) — admittedly, i haven't rewatched this one in a long time so i can't totally say it holds up. it's a rip-off of she's the man, but … better….. TO ME. yes im speaking from nostalgia bc this is the one i saw first
badhaai do (2022) — this is technically a 'sequel' to the similarly titled movie badhaai ho (2018) but they're actually total standalones
gangubai kathiawadi (2022) — i have such mixed feelings about this one but it's a movie that really stuck with me ever since i watched it soooo yeah
raees (2017) — SRK looks unbelievably fine in that movie. need i say more?
koi mil gaya (2003) — it's a mix of both ET and close encounters of the third kind... but in my very biased, nostalgic opinion: better 🫣 there's also a few sequels, but i only really remember seeing krrish (2006)
josh (2000) — another entry to the SRK looks super gorgeous in this movie 😭 this is basically a desi west side story
go goa gone (2013) — not the best to me, but its a bollywood zombie movie! which was a very new concept to me in that industry so ofc i had to throw it in there
chennai express (2013)
mohabbatein (2000)
dilwale dulhania le jayenge (1995) — had to include this for SRK reasons and also bc it's a massively impactful movie in the industry so i'd be remiss not to
andaz apna apna (1994)
ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga (2019)
jaane tu.. ya jaane na (2008)
aaja nachle (2007)
munna bhai mbbs (2003)
gangs of wasseypur - part 1 (2012) — i've only seen the first one in this series but if you want a somewhat slower, meditative, gangster movie this one def fits the bill
what's your raashee? (2009) — can't remember how well this ages (i think it was pretty mid?) but the concept is fun! priyanka chopra plays 12 girls: each personifying a different zodiac sign as the main guy tries to find his soulmate 😭
taare zameen par (2007) — you'll also see this listed as 'like stars on earth' sometimes
amar akbar anthony (1977)
don (2006) — villainous SRK? sign me up! he actually has multiple movies where he's this sorta antihero/"antivillain" type character. and even a few where he's a straight-up villain. i've been trying to get through all of those bc i just love his range
anjaam (1993) — an example of the aforementioned thing ☝🏼 SRK plays a genuinely terrible guy here, and i love how it actually challenges a lot of the tropes that bollywood tends to use in its romances and shows how creepy and stalkerish they actually are (despite it being typically framed in the narrative otherwise)
partner (2007) — i recently found out it was basically ripping will smith's hitch 😭 i haven't seen that one so i can't say which is better, but if you enjoyed that one, you'll probably be into this one too. it's very unserious and not the Best. but i watched it a lot as a kid
aaja nachle (2007)
roadside romeo (2008) — okay this is a very unserious, low budget animated movie rec. it's soooo so silly and dumb but if you're in the market for smth like that, this is an amusing one for that
welcome (2007) — i gotta rewatch this one bc i don't remember a lot but it seems like a lot of tomfoolery and shenanigans
my name is khan (2010) — another one i gotta rewatch for its politics but i figured i'd throw it in regardless
black (2005)
kal ho naa ho (2003)
kuch kuch hota hai (1998)
sholay (1975)
hungama (2003)
some from my watchlist that i haven't seen yet:
(as if this list needed to be any longer.... but anyways! including these bc i think they seem promising/interesting and i think they introduce More variety of genres/time periods than the ones before)
ijaazat (1987)
thappad (2020)
udaan (2010)
merry christmas (2024)
chhoti si baat (1976)

stree (2018)
piku (2015)
english vinglish (2012)
umrao jaan (2006) — there's also an earlier version of this movie with the same title that came out in 1981! i haven't seen either yet so i can't say which is better

Madhuri Dixit Rejected Hum Saath Saath Hain Due To This Scene With Salman Khan
Hum Saath Saath Hain was directed by Sooraj Barjatya and released in 1999. Madhuri Dixit said that she could only envision herself in Reema Lagoo’s role as it was a powerful role in the film, but she was too young to do it. Madhuri Dixit is one actress who truly ruled Bollywood in the 1980s and 90s. The actress in her heyday was filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya’s favourite and in 1998, when the…

Tumblr media
Janmashtami, also known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami, is the day we celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. His birth is celebrated to honour his divine mission of removing evil and establishing dharma. But what makes his birth so special?
What is the story behind Janmashtami?
Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell in Mathura at midnight, which is why Janmashtami is celebrated at midnight.
His maternal uncle, Kansa, had been told by a divine voice that one of his sister Devaki’s children would kill him. To prevent this, Kansa decided to kill Devaki. However, her husband Vasudeva begged Kansa to spare her and promised to give any child she had to him. Kansa agreed but imprisoned both Devaki and Vasudeva to make sure their children wouldn’t survive.
To protect Krishna, Vasudeva secretly carried him in a basket across the raging Yamuna River to Vrindavan. There, Krishna was safely raised by Yashoda and Nanda. Though Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva, he grew up in Vrindavan with Yashoda and Nanda.
Why is it called Janmashtami?
Because the festival falls on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha, a period of 15 days that starts after Purnima (full moon) and ends with Amavasya (new moon), in the month of Bhadrapada (the sixth month of the Hindu calendar). This month usually occurs in August or September.
The number eight holds special significance because Lord Krishna is both the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and the eighth child born to his mother, Devaki.
Check out the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu depicted through Bharatnatyam poses.
How is it celebrated?
Since Lord Krishna was fond of eating makhan (butter) and is also known as "Makhan Chor" (the butter thief), people celebrate by playing a sport where an earthen pot or matki filled with makhan is tied high above the ground. Participants then build a human pyramid to reach and break the pot.
The festival is filled with music and dance from devotional songs to Bollywood dance numbers.

Madhuri Dixit Rejection of Salman Khan's Hit Film 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' - The Unseen Scene
Tumblr media
In 1999, on the occasion of Diwali, the film "Hum Saath Saath Hain" was released. This blockbuster featured the heartwarming chemistry between Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan. However, not many know that Madhuri Dixit was offered a role in this film, and it was none other than Salman Khan's sister-in-law's character. Surprisingly, Madhuri turned down this offer. Urfi Javed Visit to Golden Temple: A Controversial Fashion Statement Disha Patani: A Stunning ‘Diwali Pataka’ in a Ravishing Red Saree The Blockbuster 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' Released on November 5, 1999, "Hum Saath Saath Hain" made a collection of 39.18 crores at the box office, marking Salman Khan's second blockbuster hit. Madhuri Dixit was offered the same role that Tabu portrayed in the film, which was Salman Khan's sister-in-law. In this context, Madhuri declined the offer https://www.instagram.com/p/CxnT1p2oTH-/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== Why Madhuri Rejected the Offe In a recent interview with Rediff, Madhuri Dixit mentioned that she couldn't have accepted the role because she had already played the role of Salman's love interest in Suraj Barjatya's film. Therefore, she had a discussion with him about the role, and she could have played a character like Karisma Kapoor or Sonali Bendre. But playing Salman Khan's sister-in-law's role in "Hum Saath Saath Hain" after portraying his lover in a previous film would have been a significant challenge. The Reason Behind Rejecting the Sister-in-law's Role Madhuri said, "If you put me in Tabu's place and imagine Salman touching my feet, I think people would have hunted me down in the theaters, and I think that's right." It's worth mentioning that "Hum Saath Saath Hain" featured Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Karisma Kapoor, Mohanish Behl, Sonali Bendre, and Neelam Kothari, in addition to Salman Khan.
