how do all y'all recommend getting into football for a newcomer? just pick a team and start watching them? or like watch previous tournaments or something?
first of all, welcome to football :3
there’s some similarities to the terror so i think you might find it quite familiar:
Tumblr media
get ready for some rambling below the cut!
i think it’s easiest to start by watching a bigger international tournament while it’s happening. the world cup, obviously, is the biggest event in football, but other tournaments like the european championships or the copa américa (or whatever is going on where you’re from) also work well and are happening sooner (in 2020). follow the country you’re from if they qualified or pick any other country you like, really, and… just watch.
the advantage of those tournaments are that you’ll usually get to see a good mix of teams that are actually playing to win, that it all happens within the span of a month and that there will be extensive media coverage of the matches, part of it tailored to new viewers. don’t worry too much about the details of all the rules, you’ll get into the important ones quite quickly after watching some matches. part of being a football fan also is angrily disagreeing with the rules so not much knowledge is required. the emotions are the important thing. when the tournament is over you can follow the players you got to know during it back to their clubs and slip nicely into watching club football and selling your soul to the beautiful game.
of course you can also start with club football and randomly see what sticks. football is all about irrational attachments so… whatever works. (if you’re looking for club matches, this is a good site to find a stream!)
we agreed on our discord to each recommend a past match and an upcoming one to watch. i’ve thought about it for a bit and always kept coming back to the same match that’s a classic one and though it’s cliché i’m biased enough not to care. so. world cup 2014 semifinal between germany and brazil. i promise you the pay-off is very good (unless you support brazil).
for an upcoming match there’s a women’s football match between england and germany happening on 9th november. i know we’re all here for guys being lads but if you feel like it, check out the women playing, too.
- frauke
past match: my past match recommendation is Germany vs England, World Cup 2010, Round of 16. I think it’s a beautiful example of football at its best (Germany’s incredibly fluid style of play, feat. one of my favorite goals of all time) and worst (a referee completely failing to call a goal: a farcically monstrous error on the world stage). I love this game because despite everyone’s tactics, despite everyone’s efforts, the entire game arguably hinges on one incredibly stupid, incredibly human mistake, and what comes after. In a way it is a little bit like the Franklin expedition! And even nine years later the thought of what could have been evokes hilarity in some (three fifths of this mod team) and despair in others (one fifth of this mod team). That’s football babey! [WATCH IT HERE]
upcoming match: I’m gonna recommend a club match for this one! I’m a fan of German football and the Berlin derby (Union Berlin vs Hertha Berlin) is coming up this Saturday (Nov 2) at 5:30PM GMT! This is the first time these teams will be playing each other in the top league of German football, and it’s likely to be a good example of what rivalries in club football can be like. Union Berlin has a great underdog story–this is their first year ever in the Bundesliga–and it should be a lot of fun all around! Also, one week later, on Nov 9 at 4:30PM GMT, Borussia Dortmund take on perennial juggernauts Bayern Munich. Over the last decade or so Dortmund’s fast-paced, attacking football has been the only real challenge to Bayern’s throne, and with Bayern (my team, for better or worse) not playing nearly as well as they should this season, this could shape up to be an exciting match!
-ireny
past match: so i heard you like this very english show about these very english boys? you also like to suffer? FANTASTIC! croatia vs. england, the world cup 2018 semifinals, is the only match that matters on the planet and you should watch it immediately. underdog narratives on both sides! nobody expected either team to make it as far as they did – england because they’ve got a long history of disappointing in national tournaments, croatia because they’re considered a small country in football terms and because they hadn’t gotten past the group stages since 1998. england scored early, croatia equalized in the second half to drag them to extra time – their third game in a row that went to 120+ minutes – and despite how ragged and exhausted the team was, my #1 player of all time ever mario mandžukić scored the winning goal that got croatia through to their first ever world cup final. it was a truly transcendent moment. no matter whose side you’re on (i mean, there is only one right side, but who am i to judge) it’s a thrilling, scrappy game to watch. i want you to watch it so badly, i have a link for you.
upcoming match: outside of frothing at the mouth about my national team, i watch the italian league religiously. if you’d like to try out club football, this weekend has a couple high profile games in italy. on saturday (nov. 2) at 7:00 AM PT, you can watch roma vs. napoli, which are two teams that are considered hipster to like despite the fact that they’re actually massive. napoli are, regrettably, usually very good, but have had a poor start to their season, so they’ll be looking to dominate on-fire roma. it should be a shitshow, i can’t wait! meanwhile, at 12:45 PM PT you can watch the derby della mole, torino vs. juventus. juve is the most successful team in serie a, and torino are their cross-town rivals who are EXTREMELY lovable but also Not Very Good At Football. watch it and root for torino and have your heart broken (and then come talk to me about either team/any players you like because i can prime you equally on both!) (not ronaldo.)
- caitlin
past match: W O W do the attacks against england just keep coming and coming huh just like Tuunbaq huh!!!! Aside from that, the perennial sense of crisis, setback after setback, English people suffering, madness and disappointment, and betrayal of everything you hold dear are also some of the ways in which England resembles The Terror and therefore why you should also watch us.
In the spirit of England, I’m going to recommend a match in which we lose: England 1-1 West Germany, 4-3 on penalties, at the 1990 World Cup. We lose to Germany a lot. (Pls hold: 1966, babey.) But 1990 was the first time that we reached the semi-finals since ‘66, and it was crazily emotionally charged; our coach Bobby Robson was leaving amidst a scandal, there’d been fights between the police and fans, and of course there was a palpable sense of christ, we could actually do it. (I say ‘we’ as in the way football fans say ‘we’, since in 1990 I was -5 years old.) The game is rip-roaring, furious, dramatic - look for Gazza’s Tears - and also introduces you to the concept of extra time, aka sitting in your seats for a full half-hour more than you expected, and penalties, aka something we are so famously bad at that when we finally won a penalty shootout last year we celebrated as if we had won the cup itself.
upcoming match: The Engl attacks made me defend myself and I couldn’t recommend a club game, which I would otherwise have (United 2-1 Arsenal ‘99, for those interested) because my club’s current football is SO DIRE I would not recommend it to anyone unless I wanted to turn them off of football forever. You might want to tune in next week for Liverpool Vs Man City (4:30 PM GMT, 10 Nov), a giant clash with probably entertaining football for everyone except United fans, who will desperately be cheering on Team Sinkhole.
- rach
I have something to add, which is that football has a weird and wild history, and I recommend looking up something like ‘the 10 most inexplicable moments in football’, or ‘five of the most unhinged things the most unhinged managers have ever said’ to get a taste. The sport is about enjoying the actual movement of the ball across the grass, but it’s also about basking in the massive array of bizarre personalities.
past match: a lot of good bases have already been covered re: Germany so I won’t pile on by recommending our 4-0 battering of Argentina in 2010 :3c I present to you instead the FA Cup final from 2014, Arsenal-Hull City. (Have a link!) Arsenal hadn’t won a trophy in nine years. The fan discontent with iconic manager Arsene Wenger was getting nasty. Hull City was the decided underdog. An underdog who promptly scored twice in the first ten minutes. Through a mix of lovely skill and scrappy luck the match ended happily for Arsenal, and even knowing that the Wenger story wasn’t entirely on the up and up after breaking that long drought, seeing the sheer joy and relief on everyone’ faces still makes me feel a whole lot of things.
upcoming match: that aside, Arsenal are currently playing as though they’ve got lost in a damp paper bag and have yet to soggily wander their way out. Despite that I’m going to recommend Leicester-Arsenal next weekend (9 Nov, 18.30 CET). Leicester have been absolutely swanning about (they annihilated Southampton last week 0-9 in the joint-largest prem league scoreline ever) and Arsenal at the moment, with their negative confidence and cotton wool defence are precisely in position to be smashed. But we’ve also done historically quite well against Leicester, and it could be the sort of match where Arsenal get their heads up and deliver the kind of easy-passing, smooth-running performance they’re supposed to be known for. It has great potential to be either a misery or a cheer-up charm for me, and regardless it’ll be a good time for you.

Derby rivals face-off in Super League
Tumblr media
Super League is to feature a ‘Rivals Round’ in 2021, featuring major derbies across the weekend of 19-22 August, to replace the usual Easter series.
It is hoped that the return of crowds will have been facilitated by that point, with rivalries pushed back from the typical Easter slot in April.
Wigan host St Helens, Castleford welcome Wakefield and Hull FC will stage the derby with Hull KR.
Leeds play Huddersfield and Leigh entertain Salford.
Warrington’s match with Catalans Dragons is the only anomaly, with their Perpignan-based visitors the league’s only French side, although the match is a repeat of the 2018 Challenge Cup final.
The Wigan v St Helens derby is a repeat of the 2020 Grand Final, a game Saints won only in the final seconds thanks to a late try from Jack Welsby.
Super League’s 2021 season begins on Friday, 26 March.

Carabao Cup 2nd round fixtures: Newcastle, West Ham, Everton, Leeds, Leicester learn fate | Football | Sport
Dates…
22:20: Remember, all of the fixtures below will be played the week beginning August 26. Clearly one for your diaries – I think that’s the week the Great British Bake Off returns actually.
What stands out?
22:15: I suppose the eye is drawn to the all-Premier League tie between Newcastle and Leicester at St James’ Park.
Everton have a trip to Lincoln, while Aston Villa travel to Crewe. Leeds, who beat Salford tonight, have a home tie with Championship rivals Stoke.
Fulham vs Southampton should be a good fixture as will QPR vs Portsmouth – a tie that I was going to dub the Harry Redknapp derby – but he’s managed everyone so perhaps not.

NORTH DRAW
CREWE vs ASTON VILLA
LINCOLN vs EVERTON
LEEDS vs STOKE
SHEFFIELD UNITED vs BLACKBURN
ROTHERHAM vs SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY/BURY
NEWCASTLE vs LEICESTER
BURTON vs MORECAMBE
BURNLEY vs SUNDERLAND
NOTTINGHAM FOREST vs DERBY
GRIMSBY vs MACCLESFIELD
PRESTON vs HULL
ROCHDALE vs CARLISLE

SOUTH DRAW
PLYMOUTH vs READING
CRAWLEY vs NORWICH
NEWPORT vs WEST HAM
OXFORD vs MILLWALL
WATFORD vs COVENTRY
SWANSEA vs CAMBRIDGE
CARDIFF vs LUTON
BRISTOL ROVERS vs BRIGHTON
CRYSTAL PALACE vs COLCHESTER
FULHAM vs SOUTHAMPTON
BOURNEMOUTH vs FOREST GREEN
SOUTHEND vs MK DONS
QPR vs PORTSMOUTH
We’re ready!
22:05: Give yourselves a pat on the back for your sensational patience… we’re about to get started on the second-round draw.
Gary Neville (home draws) and Paul Robinson (away draw) are ready…
So…
22:02: Anyone seen any good box-sets recently? I’m struggling.
We’ve been promised the draw is coming up after the break. Either than or a 10-minute interview with Salford manager Graham Alexander – who knows at this point.
What’s happening?
22:00: You guessed it – Gary Neville and Paul Robinson are still discussing the Salford vs Leeds match. Not sure there’s much else to discuss lads.
Get the draw started!
Ey up!
21:55: The penalties are nearly over across the country. Crewe beat Middlesbrough, Macclesfield beat Blackpool, Newport knocked out Gillingham, QPR beat Bristol City, Wycombe were beaten by Reading.
I don’t know if you care about any of this – but I’ve started so I’ll finish.
MK Dons beat Wimbledon, Bristol City out after a penalty defeat to QPR, Cambridge beat Brentford. Oh, and in the late fixture Millwall have beaten West Brom 2-1.
Delay…
21:50: Sky Sports have got us right where they want us – glued to their coverage while they analyse the Salford vs Leeds match. I suspect the dozens of viewers aren’t too interested in Mateusz Klich’s 58th-minute goal…
Tumblr media
Carabao Cup 2nd round draw LIVE: Express Sport brings you LIVE coverage as it happens (Image: GETTY)
Penalties
21:45: Eight games are heading for penalties after a flurry of late goals. Blackburn were spared the dreaded spot-kicks thanks to a late Rothwell winner.
High-profile ones include Wimbledon vs MK Dons, Middlesbrough vs Crewe and QPR vs Bristol City. What a time to be alive.
Big late goals
21:40: Middlesbrough and Blackburn have both snatched draws in stoppage-time against Crewe and Oldham respectively to force penalty shootouts.
It’s full time and Leeds have knocked over Salford 3-0 to advance to the next round. Marco Bielsa’s side are in the hat!
What happens in a draw?
21:35: Any game that finishes in a draw tonight will be decided on penalties. No extra time or any of that nonsense.
As things stand five games will be decided by penalties – but I very much doubt we’ll be waiting on those to finish before the draw is made.
Who’s in?
21:30: Should you have decided to ignore the rest of this article – unwisely I might add – then you may not be aware that 13 Premier League clubs join the competition at the second-round stage.
Only the sides in Europe miss out – so that means Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Wolves join in the third round.
Tumblr media

What’s the plan?
21:25: Well the draw is supposed to take place after the conclusion of this Salford City vs Leeds clash – but knowing the Carabao Cup – honestly anything could happen.
Quite a few scalps exiting the competition Blackburn, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough and Wigan all losing with roughly ten minutes remaining.
Ball numbers
21:20: Why do people have a fascination with the ball numbers for these draws? I’ve seen countless articles on which ball number each side has been assigned.
Is it to know that split-second before the presenter reads it out? Anyway… you can see all the ball numbers if you scroll to the bottom of this page.
Yes, I’m a hypocrite!
Tumblr media

Leeds vs Salford
21:15: Anyone watching the the featured game on Sky tonight? Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes were on the TV to discuss their beloved Salford City, who are entertaining Leeds at the Peninsula Stadium tonight.
Not quite gone to plan. Marcelo Bielsa’s Championship side are cruising through to the second-round draw. They currently lead 3-0 with Arsenal loanee Eddie Nketiah among the goals.
Evening…
21:10: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Carabao Cup second-round draw.
Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Wolves will not be involved tonight because of their Champions League and Europa League campaigns.
But 13 Premier League sides WILL learn their fate as the weird and wonderful world of a Carabao Cup draw unfolds at around 21:45.
Now we’ve not got the bizarre and unlikely double act of John Barnes and Ray Parlour drawing the balls at a Morrisons in north-west London – but it should be good nonetheless.
Tumblr media

When is the Carabao Cup draw?
The Carabao Cup second round draw will take place on Tuesday August 13 2019.
The draw will be conducted at the Peninsula Stadium following the conclusion of Salford City’s first round showdown with Leeds United.
That game is scheduled to get underway at 7.45pm (BST) so, providing penalties are not required, the draw should begin around 9.35pm.
Sky Sports presenter Laura Woods will host the draw, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football.

Who can face who?
Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two clubs can be drawn against each other in any combination.
However, the draw will once again be regionalised into north and south sections to reduce travel times for supporters.
When are the second round fixtures?
The Carabao Cup campaign will draw to a close on Sunday March 1 2019.
So, in order to get everything done before then, the second round fixtures will take place in the week commencing Monday August 26.

Joined by Alan Stubbs for the live draw on Sky Sports, the 72-year-old was in a buoyant mood, leaving social media in stitches by his antics over whether or not he had a few drinks prior to taking part.
The lifelong Hoops fan would have been delighted his side secured victory today – and even more so that they avoided bitter rivals Rangers.
Celtic will face Inverness Caledonian Thistle, while their Old Firm rivals have been drawn against Morton at home.

There is also a potential Edinburgh derby at stake if Hearts beat Raith Rovers in their replay – they will play Hibernian at Easter Road.
Hilariously, not only was Stewart staggering around while reading out the names of the club’s, but Stubbs was having great difficulty reading the correct numbers.
Fans couldn’t believe what they was seeing, here are a few of the best tweets.

Hahaha Rod Stewart doing the Scottish draw drunk is the best thing ever. If he could do the FA Cup next time it would brighten it up 😂😂
Possibly the most entertaining Scottish cup draw ever with a slightly intoxicated Rod Stewart there 😂

EFL Championship Match Previews – 19th October Saturday
Brentford v Millwall
Alas, the Championship returns following the international break and there is a London derby which I like the look of in the form of Brentford versus Millwall. Now we have to be fair in saying that neither of these clubs have had the start to the season that they’d have wanted. Brentford are actually closer to the bottom-three than they are the top-six, whilst the fact Millwall have already changed manager is an indication of their form.
We’ll start with Brentford however, a team where plenty was expected of them in pre-season. Granted, they have lost star striker Neal Maupay and he most certainly has not been replaced; which is of course easier said than done. Ollie Watkins however has stepped up as best as he can in the central striker role, despite the suggestion he is more effective out wide. Only Fulham’s Mitrovic has more goals in the league so he is doing something right!
As mentioned, Millwall saw Neil Harris departed prior to the Leeds game, with Adam Barrett taking over and then overseeing a fine home win over the league leaders. They are actually unbeaten in their last three league games, with trips to Luton and Huddersfield anything but easy. Harris nevertheless felt a change was needed as it was mutually agreed he would move on, perhaps believing he has taken them as far as he can.
The first thing which jumps off the page looking ahead to Saturday is the goals column and that is where our selection will be based from. Well, we’ll let you know that now, as Under 2.5 Goals has to be the play, all things considered.
What have we considered? Firstly, we have to acknowledge the fact that goals just are not flowing in Brentford’s matches, much to the surprise of everyone. Just two of their 11 league contests this season has featured over 2.5 goals, with their games alone averaging roughly 1.60; by far the lowest in the division. Millwall’s figures aren’t exactly much higher either, with just 3/11 seeing at least three goals, averaging around 2.20.
The slight fear about backing this selection comes in the form of the Expected Goals numbers. Both of these teams would actually be positioned in the top-eight if Expected Goals was the only consideration. That therefore suggests they are created chances, but not taking enough of them. I have resisted the temptation to believe that will change as Brentford have actually failed to score in six league games, with six of their nine goals scored coming across two matches alone.
Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Under 2.50 goals at 1.950
Hull v QPR
Hull against QPR certainly has an attractive look to it when glancing across the Championship fixture card this weekend. Both teams experienced a managerial change over the summer, with Grant McCann and Mark Warburton implementing their own philosophy on proceedings. Early indications are largely positive, but each side looking a great threat going forward compared to last season.
The Tigers rather frustratingly for them only have three Championship wins to their name this season. One defeat in their last six is generally good form for a mid-table side, but that 3-0 setback did come last time out away to rivals Huddersfield, who had only won one game all season prior to that. McCann no doubt would have wanted a quick game after that to get it out of their system, but they’ll undoubtedly have worked hard over the break, although several were away with their countries.
Warburton certainly has a reputation for his team’s playing quite a bold, offensive style of play and in the early weeks of the season they scored some excellent team goals. When they click, they can certainly give any side in this league a run for their money. Two defeats in three derails their progress to a degree, but they did hit four past Blackburn before the break to get them back on track.
We again look towards the Expected Goals column ahead of this game as it really does provide rather intriguing reading. Hull find themselves 16th in the table entering this round of fixtures, but they should be in a play-off position based on the quality of chances they have created thus far. End product must be improved upon. QPR however are roughly where they should be given the opportunities they’ve had, but they are one of the highest-scorers in the league on 18.
The issue with QPR is that clean sheets are in short supply as they also have one of the leakiest defences as they’ve conceded 19 goals. That means their games are averaging around 3.40 goals; the highest in the division, and eight of their 11 contests featured over 2.5 goals. Goals, goals and more goals are just the name of the game when QPR are involved.
It therefore comes as no surprise for me to nominate Over 2.5 Goals as my selection for this game. Even when we considered Hull league matches, they have averaged 2.70 goals, but more important, 7/11 contained over 2.5 goals, proving that goals aren’t ever too far away when they’ve around, either. The fact of the matter is that both Hull and QPR will play to win this game, and it has the makings of a more open contest as opposed to a tight and cagey affair.
Asian Total Goals Betting Recommendation: Over 2.50 goals at 1.670
Luton v Bristol City
Luton Town against Bristol City is another game on the weekend card which has the potential makings of an exciting affair. What we do know for certain is that both coaches will set up their respective teams to win, simply because they don’t really have any other way of playing.
The Hatters are probably still adjusting to life back in this league, but having a new manager in the form of Graeme Jones has certainly contributed towards this as he himself admits he is learning about the players all the time in what is his first outright managerial role. Two goalkeeper errors largely contributed to their loss to Derby before the international break, with many now suggesting James Shea will be recalled ahead of club record signing Simon Sluga at Kenilworth Road this Saturday.
Lee Johnson’s team on the other hand have only suffered the one league defeat so far in 11 matches. The frustration however is that they may possibly have one or two more draws than they’d have wanted. Five in total. Having said that, whilst drawing three of their last four may seem a bit of a pain, trips to Brentford and Preston plus a home clash with Swansea means they’re anything but bad results.
Nevertheless, those will be games Bristol City played to win, and Johnson will be making hard on the fine details to try and make those sort of fixtures two points extra in the future. Luton away fits into the category of the sort of game they’ll certainly target the win from, whilst Luton definitely will as Jones has stamped a real offensive approach, especially at home.
This has contributed to Luton’s league contests averaging around 3.20 goals and 8/11 featuring over 2.5 goals. Goals are also a regular occurrence, but the concern is that they themselves haven’t scored in three of their last five in league and cup. Two of those were at home, and they’d always back themselves in front of their own supporters to be positive and take their chances.
They sit 18th, but the Expected Goals tally places them in the relegation zone so they really need to be doing more in relation to creating better moments for themselves to test the opposing goalkeeper. Bristol City are over-exceeding in their case, as they’re 6th in the table but should be 14th based on the chances they’ve created. That therefore places a big emphasis on being clinical, but the good thing on Saturday is that Luton are very open and generally concede chances. Bristol therefore should create more goalscoring moments than normal.
That is ultimately why I am happy to back Bristol City 0 on the Asian Handicap. They’re clearly tough to beat and I feel they are much more advanced in comparison to Luton in terms of being competitive in this league and ultimately being effective in both boxes.
Asian Handicap Betting Recommendation: Bristol City 0.00 at 1.980

Championship round-up: Aston Villa maintain play-off momentum with win over Bristol City
West Brom stay on the edge of the top three championship after the big win Preston victory
Aston Villa held their play-off momentum with a crucial victory over Bristol City
in the championship after being out of Preston with 4-0 pounded on the hawthorns
Despite their recent inconsistencies, triple Dwight Gayle and a strike by Jay Rodriquez
The perfectly timed course of the form continued when she met Bristol City 2-1 defeated, Tammy Abraham scored from the spot against his old side and Conor Hourihane added a second before Famara Diedhiou withdrew one.

Middlesbrough kept their playoff chances alive and maybe Hull & # 39; s ended up winning 1-0 on the Riverside thanks to the strike by Britt Assombalonga.
Martin O & # 39; Neill continues to find life hard in Nottingham Forest and lost 2-1 to Blackburn at home. Joe Rothwell (29) and Danny Graham (49) put Rovers comfortably in front, before Elliott Bennet's own goal Forest provided a lifeline that they couldn't take.
Beleaguered QPR gave their long-suffering fans something to cheer, beating Swansea 4-0 in a shock result.

Darnell Furlong and Tomer Hemed had two goals within five minutes, with Hemed again and Mass Luongo adding even more efforts.
Rotherham remain in the bottom three, but they closed the opening on Wigan, who
Sam Vokes and Sam Clucas scored in Stoke before Will Vaulks and Matt Crooks responded to the Millers
With Ipswich down, Bolton with cash will probably soon follow them, drifting nine points with four games left after a 4-0 beating on Derby, Mason Mount & great hat trick that contributed to Craig's opener Bryson.
A brace from Yakou Meite helped Reading ease their fall fears as they beat Brentford 2-1, Neal Maupay set off for the bees.
