[Trying a new whump trope, requested a while ago by @whumperofworlds]
Whumpee's ears ring as they slowly come to. Their head lulls forward; their body too heavy to move, Whumpee realizes, the only thing keeping them from falling over is the rope typing them to the tree behind them. They only figure out that their legs are tucked uncomfortably beneath them when the pins and needles start, crawling from their feet up their calves.
What happened? What... how did they get here? Okay... just a few minutes ago, they were coming back from their trip to the bathroom... And... and--
"Hey..."
Startled, Whumpee would have lifted their head to see who was talking to them, but their head felt like lead. All they can manage is looking out of the corner of their eye at the culprit's legs, then their face as they crouch down.
Caretaker.
They feel their heart stop as Caretaker smiles and cups their cheek, turning their head gently towards them. Caretaker's voice, once warm and sweet, now curdles Whumpee's blood as they begin to speak.
"I'm sorry it's come to this, Whumpee," Caretaker says, in that same gentle tone of voice they'd used hundreds of times before to comfort them after a nightmare. "You understand, right?"
Whumpee tries to speak, but with their tongue so numb from whatever Caretaker had injected them with, it may as well have been a river stone. Instead, Whumpee whimpers, eliciting a pitiful head tilt from the person that had rescued them a year ago.
"For what it's worth," they say, caressing their thumb over Whumpee's cheek, "you're playing a very important part in tracking down Whumper. We've implanted a tracking chip into your arm, Whumpee."
Caretaker sits down next to them, leaning in and wrapping them in a hug. Their hand caresses the back of Whumpee's head, fingers playing with a lock of their hair, just like before. Whumpee wanted nothing more than to rip away.
"Ultimately," they say softly, "that's always been our goal. To find them, right? But I knew you'd never agree to this. So... here you are. I..."
Whumpee's eyes well up as Caretaker trails off and pulls away, once more cupping their face and studying their expression. Whumpee manages to shake their head. "I know, I know," Caretaker tries to soothe. "It won't be for long. This is the last resort. We... we sent Whumper your location. You just need to hang on while we track you down, okay?"
Whumpee looks away, and Caretaker sighs, getting back to their feet.
"See you in a couple weeks, Whumpee," they bid, walking away without another word.

Your post on Jason building up a tolerance makes me imagine a situation that's kind of a sequel to 'it used to be yours' where this time its Jason instead of Bruce who's making all the drunken confessions.
Cue every single one of the batkids trying to get into the cave because they wanna hear Jason embarrass himself while Bruce (and maybe Dick too?) try to stop them from getting in.
Oh I love this idea...so much.

You know since Fulgrim became this snake thing, how much do you wanna bet he has a habit of swallowing things whole and then just not eating for the next week or so that it takes to digest his meal? I bet you anything he's eaten space marines whole and got a horrible stomach ache from it. Why he thought it was a good idea is anyone's guess.
Anyway, I am slowly learning to love Fulgrim as much as I do Sanguinius. They're both super cool and it's very sad what happened to Fulgrim. I wish I could fix him. Also, Snake. You have no idea how much I fucking love Snakes. His scales are so pretty!!!! I wonder how hard shedding is for him. He must have times where he doesn't really eat much or seem interested in doing anything aside from rubbing on this rock because skin is very itchy and tight. I also realize this would imply Fulgrim is literally just getting bigger and longer. He does not need to get any bigger. He will become a mountain of a snake man if allowed to grow continuously. Probably more likely shed if he gets hurt or has parasites like regular snakes do. Might shed every few hundred years or thousand depending. As big as his sheds would be, imagine how pretty they'd be!!!
#This was brought to you by a certified snake lover#Fulgrim is very pretty as a demon primarch#I am slowly loving him#I want to hug him#the fact that he's very effeminate but also strong as hell makes me happy#he's kinda like mortarian in how he became a part of chaos#both got tricked by it#too bad Slaanesh fundamentally destorys a person until there's nothing good left in them#which makes not understand why people like Slaanesh#yea you get sex and drugs in excess#but it's in excess#you lose who you are#and that to me is the scariest thing in existence#fulgrim#snake fulgrim#slaanesh#warhammer 40k#40k#warhammer 30k

batkids high headcanons
CW: weed (duh), characters being high (also duh), slightly platonic yandere, and infantilization
Dick: absolute cuddle monster, he will grab which ever sibling is closest and hold on like an octopus, if the need to get something from the other room he will simply carry them there so they can get it. need to go to the bathroom? it will take 15 minuets minimum to convince him to let you go. some siblings will hit him for clinging but it doesn't stop him at all. he just loves you guys so much, and he will tell you this constantly. super affectionate, will kiss the top of your head, you cheeks, your forehead ect. some of the others with try and stab him for this others will give up and let him. will be the one to buy all of the snacks before the sesh. makes sure to get all the ones he know you like best.
Jason: anger issues? what anger issues? super chill and the most relaxed you've seen him. he will find you and will carry you around on his hip, he talks to you like your a child (only you not any of the other siblings) he has a firm hold on you so the only way you're getting down is if one of the other siblings manages to convince him. however he is super comfy and you might fall asleep. if this happens you will be cooed at and many pics will be taken (however that would happen no matter what you did so). tries super hard to make you laugh but keeps cutting himself off by laughing at his own jokes. totally makes his own edibles. will go along with almost any silly antic you get up to, the best at playing along with the bit.
Tim: becomes super quiet and doesn't make many expressions, observes the others for the most part. then out of nowhere he will say the most philosophical shit that makes no sense to anyone but him and he refuses to elaborate. one of the only times he will fall asleep willingly. he will also hug like an octopus but only to you, you can push him off much easier but less than half of a minuet later he's hugging you again. will randomly start petting your hair when hugging you. takes lots of pics of you, if you ask why he just says he's documenting important things. he will use the particularly good/cute ones as ransom to the other siblings (ex. "if you do [insert thing] for me ill give you this pic of (y/n) high [doing cute thing]" and it always works)
Steph: becomes an absolute comedian, constantly cracking jokes and finds the funniest videos to watch. smiles and laughs at everything. tends to fall asleep before everyone else tho (except Duke but more on that later) finds the most random things funny, one time you found her laughing her ass off at an egg just sitting on the counter in the kitchen. will bat at things like a cat, like hoodie strings or someone's hair (most likely belonging to Tim or Cass). defo the biggest stoner out of the whole group (followed by probably Jason). always has a bag of chips on her, no one knows where she keeps them she just pulls them out of nowhere to start snacking.
Cass: Cass has never been drunk or high or any form of intoxicated, and she plans to keep it that way. she likes being in total control of herself all of the time. she does however like to hangout with you guys while you are high, she thinks its very funny and she takes photos and records things to use as blackmail or to trade. stays silent in the corner the whole time just watching you guys be idiots, if she sees you're starting to get stressed/have a bad time she will instantly be by your side and knows exactly how to comfort you. she makes sure you guys always have enough water, before you even ask there's a water bottle right next to you. (depending on just how high you are it ranges from a glass of water to straight up a sippy cup)
Duke: doesn't really get high often but will hang out with you like Cass, he however talks to you guys more than just observing. the few times he gets high it always a really small edible because he has a super low tolerance and smoking intimidates him, and he usually only uses it to help him sleep. dude is knocked out almost as soon as it hits. if he does manage to stay up he just laughs at everything and smiles without saying much. he's just happy to be there :]
Damian: is too young to do anything so no weed for him. he claims he doesn't care and that he is superior for keeping his mind clear but will then go pout in his room because he feels left out. will hang out sometimes but not often because he is a common target for dicks octopus hugs/overbearing affection. when he is old enough I get the feeling he would still not partake out of spite and so he can say he's better than you.
Bonus: Alfred makes the best food for munchies, any requests will be made no matter how strange. Bruce knows but he lets it slide (only after doing several hours of research on it to make sure you guys weren't doing anything too harmful) because he's just happy to see all of his kids getting along and bonding. Bruce did give you all an hour long lecture about making sure what you had was gotten from a safe and regulated dispensary and how to get high in the safest way possible. I personally think he transformed one of the lounge rooms into a specific high room, it has no sharp objects and nothing that you could accidentally get hurt on, there's pillows and blankets everywhere. he will also make sure you guys properly clean any pipes/bongs. much like many of your siblings he will use this as an opportunity to baby you (he would tell you to hold his hand because you might be a bit wobbly or carry you to bed ect.)

Hold Him Down (pt. 1)
TW:Â Med Whump, Gratuitous Med Whump, Medical Restraints, Chemical Restraints, Noncon Touch, Referenced Noncon, Parker Destin, Institutionalized Slavery, Noncon Drugging, Conditioning, Referenced Food/Water Restriction, Referenced/Described STI testing, Referenced/Described Shock Collar, Whumper POV, literally over 4k words wtf, get leo a pet fish and warm hug when.
Notes:Â This is one of those things that I'm, as usual, not sure needs to or should exist, but I spent so much time writing it that I couldn't just NOT post it, sooo here it is. Parts 4-6 coming eventually. Takes place in the 12-ish hour span after Leo is prematurely returned from our best guy, Parker Destin. This may be one that I revisit and try to refine down the line.
â„ â„ â„
From behind a two-way mirror, Handler Otto Gray and an unfamiliar intake handler stand, arms crossed over their chests. They watch Leo quietly, relieved that, at least for now, the dust has settled.Â
His eyes finally closed, a few hours earlier, following a massive fight that ended in a sizable dose of Lorazepam. Even drugged, it took what felt like ages for him to settle down, and even longer for his body to finally go limp. Hours later, the salty tear-streaks are still visible on his cheeks.
The doctor asked them to wait on cleaning him up; in spite of the second handlerâs objections, in spite of the apparently innate desire to put this unconscious boy in his place, the handler turned on his heels and left in a huff. Otto hesitated, sparing a quick glance at Leo. He wondered, briefly, how he had managed to fail so spectacularly, before dismissing the thought all together. Against his better judgment, he squeezed Leoâs hand briefly, then he checked to make sure the restraints were appropriately secured and exited. Today was sure to be a long day, sure to be even longer if they could not get a handle on whatever panic-induced psychosis Leo was clearly grappling with.
Somewhere in the middle of it all, shift change happened. The handler who had spent the evening scowling at Leoâs lifeless form clocked out, muttering a, âGood luck,â to his replacement. Otto stayed, though, with a quick glance at handler Nick Ford, according to his name tag, and a muttered greeting. Hopefully, he thinks, this one is better suited for this type of work than the last. The doctor comes up behind them, and the three stand in silence for a moment.
âHeâs asleep?â the doctor asks, which is a question that could ordinarily be answered with a quick glance through a chart, but Leo has a notoriously unpredictable response to sedatives and that, if nothing else, has been noted numerously in his file.
Otto nods, his jaw locked. âI think so.â
Leoâs wrists are red, raw where each strap hugs them, but for the last few hours, they have been still. Mostly.
âFor how long?â the doctor asks, thumbing through the notes from the night before. A colorful account of the events that led to this moment, which, although maybe not immediately helpful, might lend insight into the inner workings of Leo Evans.
âA couple hours,â Handler Ford supplies, and Otto is struck suddenly with a potent distaste for how this night has played out.Â
Itâs not out of the ordinary, exactly, for a worker to require this level of support after a contract. He hoped, though, maybe naively, that Leo was more resilient than this.
Heâs been drugged out of his mind, and as hard as he fought it, the drugs eventually dragged him under. To Ottoâs understanding, it was only after several hours of trying to calm him down using other methods that he was eventually medicated, and, to Ottoâs understanding, the doctor intends now to keep him drugged until heâs under control. He idly wonders if thereâs a chance at modifying those plans. Leo is tough, sometimes damn near impossible to work with, but they had found a kind of balance when Otto was his handler. And he thinks, now, he can perhaps spare everyone some heartache if he can have a go at his former trainee.
Otto peers in closer to the window as Leo gasps, his wrists pulling once, lightly, at the straps.
âAlright,â the doctor says, at the same time that Leoâs eyes crack open. As Handler Ford reviews the notes with the Doctor, Otto studies Leo. He hadnât been an easy trainee. He had been downright defiant at times, resistant to every standard training tool the DLS employed. Otto had been called in in his second month, after his primary handler was fired for, more or less, losing his patience with Leo one time too many, with Leo landing in the ICU. Even after that, success came in short, nearly unpredictable bursts.
When Leo had finally been cleared to take his first contract, that would usually have been the end of Ottoâs time with him. But, at least in some of his most challenging successes, he liked to keep an eye on them, if not just to see how they did. He would tell you he did this to improve his own methods, and to help him understand the longer term implications of his work. That wouldn't be the whole truth, though.Â
Leo was one of the select few that Otto found himself keeping an eye on. He had gotten through his first contract easily, and Otto recalled the feeling of immense relief as he read through Ms. Smithâs post-contract interview. Leo had been put in a short term holding site and almost immediately secured his second contract. That one wasnât set to terminate for three months still, so when Otto got the notification that Leoâs file was being updated last night, he called in some favors with the intake department.
He stands here now, mostly frustrated, a little bit confused, and perhaps, maybe slightly sympathetic. Simmering beneath all that is anger, misplaced but a constant undertone that, he worries, may drive some of his decisions today. He buries it as deeply as he can. It serves neither him nor Leo.
Leo blinks hard toward the ceiling, but seems to clock his circumstances quickly. His head turns toward the mirror and for a moment, Otto thinks Leo can see him, right through him, right into the place Leo used to occasionally access and attempt to exploit.
Otto stares at his eyes, red, heavy, and unfocused, and wills Leo to remain calm. Leo swallows, and pulls again against the restraints.
Stop, Otto silently commands. But he doesnât. Of course, he wouldnât.
âWhat are the odds heâll take it on his own?â Otto hears from next to him.
âWhat?â Otto responds, shifting his focus.
âThe meds?â Handler Ford says as he holds up a small cup of pills in one hand, a syringe filled with an off-white liquid in the other.
âOh,â Otto responds. The odds, he thinks, are nonexistent. The good news is this isnât explicitly his problem anymore.Â
âAny pointers?â Handler Ford asks then. At Ottoâs look, he says, âYou worked with him, right?âÂ
Otto nods, but doesnât offer any pointer. Handler Ford stares at him intently, so, out of some misplaced desire to prove that he is not, in fact, completely incompetent with his trainees, he says, âA long time ago. I did his initial training after his first handler got canned.â
âWhat for?â Ford asks. Heâs stalling, Otto thinks.Â
âAssault,â Otto supplies. He inclines his head toward the room, and turns away from Handler Ford, re-orienting himself toward the window.
âWish me luck?â
âGood Luck,â Otto says, not unkindly, as the handler disappears behind the door. Moments later, he is in Leoâs room.
Leoâs demeanor immediately shifts, from alarmed and fighting to gain function to panicked, but he stills, he swallows, he forces his eyes on the handler, and takes a breath. Good boy, Otto thinks.
Heâs whispering something, but Otto canât make out the words. He thinks heâs heard Parkerâs name, and Handler Ford shakes his head.
Leo nods, then, and takes one of those deep, shuddering breaths that usually mean heâs on the edge of some big feelings. Otto, once more, leans closer to the window.
Handler Ford begins listing out the things he needs Leo to do this morning, and Leoâs brow creases as he takes it in, nodding after each item, but seemingly oblivious to the actual requests.
Inside the observation room, the doctor joins Otto.
âDo you know what happened?â Otto asks the doctor. Otto, immediately realizing he could be asking any number of things, clarifies, âThat led to this. He didnât have an issue after his first contract.â
âSometimes they get freaked out after spending some time with a particularly cozy buyer,â he replies.Â
Otto nods.Â
In the room, Handler Fordâs hand is on Leoâs neck, pressing under the collar. Leo stays still, but Otto can see the fear in his eyes, behind layers and layers of grief. Itâs odd, seeing him like this.
âYou didnât last too long, did you?â Handler Ford is saying, dripping condescension, as Leo swallows, holding in a fresh wave of tears.
â„ â„ â„
âItâs nothing personal, Leo.â Parkerâs driver waits for Leo just beyond the threshold. In his hand, Parker holds out a DLS-issued bag.
Leo nods.
Parker grabs his face between his hands and presses his lips to Leoâs forehead. âYou have to understand I didnât plan for this,â heâs saying, but Leoâs ears are ringing. âI would have waited to take on a worker if I had any inclination I would be called away.â His words are kind, Leo thinks, but thereâs almost a note of condescension under them.Â
Leo feels a sort of emptiness spreading throughout him, a cold void that precedes what he could only describe as terror. For whatâs next. For losing this thing, that he isnât sure he should want, but he wants, so desperately. He clings to it.Â
âParker, Iâ I can,â Leo starts, taking a step back. He can, what? fix this? do better? be better? âPlease donât do thisâŠâ
Parkerâs thumbs glide across Leoâs cheeks.
âI thought they beat that out of you,â Parker says, his lips pulled into a half-smile. Leo falters, the words he has prepared are completely knocked out of him.
âIâ Iâm sorry,â is all he can now formulate. He can feel his circumstances changing as every second passes. Heâs going to be sick. The feeling of bile rising wars against the knowledge that if he is sick at this moment, it will be unforgivable.Â
Parkerâs hands drift down to Leoâs shoulders and he pulls him into a half-hug, pressing his forehead against Leoâs.
âDonât worry about it,â Parker says. He wants to say more, Leo thinks.
Instead, Parker uses the grip he has on Leoâs shoulder to push him away and rakes his eyes slowly over Leo, from his head to his toes. He smiles and grabs the collar of Leoâs shirt, poking out from under a deep blue sweater. Itâs Parkerâs favorite.
He inclines his head briefly toward the door and Leo counts every breath he takes.
âThey said not to send your books and clothes and things,â Parker explains as he pulls open the front door. âItâll just go to waste. I can donate it, if youâd like?â
And Leo, in that moment, hesitates. Can he ask Parker to keep it, for when he gets back from his trip? Maybe, he thinks. Maybe Parker hasnât considered that Leo could stay in the house and look after it, and he doesnât need to send him away.Â
And then it occurs to Leo that maybe Parker is using this time to help figure out the gaps in his training, because theyâve been butting heads lately, and if thatâs the case, he wants to tell Parker that he will take this time seriously, and will be better suited to be what Parker needs him to be when he returns.
Leo opens his mouth to say this, to say any of it, even just to tell Parker that he will try harder when he gets back from his trip.
But the panic wraps itself around Leoâs throat, and Leo says nothing.
â„ â„ â„
âAre you ready to behave?â The words distort around the edges and Leo blinks hard, willing himself to focus.
This handler, Leo thinks, is unfamiliar to him. There is a fuzziness to both his vision and his thoughts, compounded by blurry memories of the night before. The handler is standing just outside of his line of sight, offering terse reprimands each time he fails to respond. He is trying, though. He wants to tell them heâs trying, but his tongue feels too thick and his voice wonât work.
Thereâs an added danger that Leo tries not to acknowledge, even silently. Theyâve put a training collar on him, but they havenât gone so far as to shock the world into focus. Even if his limbs didnât weigh a thousand pounds, he would not be able to lift them. Thick canvas straps wound tightly around each wrist and ankle keep him in place, and Leo blinks at the unexpected wave of terror: these people can and will hurt him with no regard for the fact that he is wholly unable to protect himself.Â
The drugs help him accept these facts, but do not help him to forget them.
Memories of the night before claw their way to the surface. Of the sound of his own screaming, of gloved hands pinning him down, of his clothing being pulled off of his body. Of Parker's favorite sweater, which he held tightly to his chest, as it was ripped from his arms. He flinches at the memory of himself, just [some?] hours earlier, as he begged them to let him keep it, as a needle digs its way deep into his thigh. The darkness was quick to swallow him up after that.
And then there are other memories, too, from later in the night. Distorted flashes of the handlers coming to visit him, of cold hands pulling off the thin blanket that had been draped over him. He wondered if the drugs might ease the pain. When they didnât, he allowed himself a moment of relief in the hope that this might all just be written off as a drug-induced nightmare in the light of day.
And now, the drugs fading, and the light of day doing nothing to erase ache deep inside of him, he swallows, blinking slowly, and longs only for the reprieve that unconsciousness may bring. That maybe they will drug him again, before they touch him again. His stomach turns over, and he draws his focus to the lights on the ceiling.
âHeâs lost some weight,â he hears the doctor say, but they arenât speaking to him, so he closes his eyes and taps each finger on the pad beneath him, just to see if he can feel them all.Â
âHis buyer kept him hungry,â the handler replies. He can, he thinks, feel them all. âMy understanding is he kept him on a pretty strict eating plan.â
Leo recoils, hearing Parkerâs voice in his head. The DLS has asked that you start out on a kind of strict meal plan for a little bit. He blinks back tears at the unwelcome memories. Of Parker, event after event, selecting everything he ate, everything he touched. Of the imperceptible nod Parker would give him when he reached for something at the dinner table. Or the terse shake of his head when he moved to something unacceptable.Â
Leo wants to tell these men that Parker didnât keep him hungry. That he was just enacting the plan he had been given.
âIâll need a copy of it,â the doctor responds, and Leo squeezes his eyes shut, forcing his mind blank.
âItâs in his file,â the handler says. Leoâs ears ring.Â
âGood.â The doctor presses his hands fingers into the back of Leoâs neck, the collar momentarily tightening as the fingers explore under it. âHeâs dehydrated,â he says, and Leo can picture the handler typing his notes. âAre you going to tell me the buyer restricted his water intake too?â
From somewhere far away, the handler laughs, and Leoâs expression tightens, momentarily stunned by the mockery.
âItâs alright,â he thinks he hears, but the voices are so far away now. He doesnât know that heâs crying until he feels a thumb wiping at his cheek, and Leo sucks in a breath. âYouâre alright.â
The world stands still for what could be seconds or minutes or longer. When the doctorâs hand finally migrates upward, and a light is shined into each of Leoâs eyes, he is momentarily blinded, but immediately aware that he has lost time.
The doctorâs fingers, inches from his face, snap once. âHi, Leo,â he says simply. And then, âIâm Dr. Grant. Are you with me?â
Leo swallows, which hurts, and other memories slide to the surface of the night before. He tries to nod. The movement makes his head pound. âYes,â he whispers, but based on the doctorâsâ what was his name?â grimace, he doesnât think it came out right.
The doctor sighs and seemingly gives up on Leoâs active participation, instead pulling the blanket down to Leoâs waist and putting a stethoscope to Leoâs chest. Itâs nothing, Leo thinks, but itâs never just this. He closes his eyes again and begins counting in his head. Every so often, he forgets where he left off, and he starts over.
The doctor explains what heâs doing as he works, and Leo wonders idly if itâs for his benefit or for some other reason. To pass the time, and maybe to distract himself, Leo imagines a new doctor in the adjacent observation room, learning this trade. He wonders if itâs a good doctor or a bad doctor, and opens his eyes just enough to glance toward the mirror, to see if he can spot him back there. There are no good doctors here, he decides, and starts counting again.
The doctor looks at Leoâs wrists and describes them to the handler, who writes it all down. He examines Leoâs arms and his shoulders and his chest and his stomach as he searches for signs that Parker hurt him beyond what would be considered reasonable, which he didnât, Leo wants to say, and that Parker will come back for him after his trip, and that he needs to be ready to go home. Then he starts counting again, because the idea of telling this man that Parker will come back for him will be met with laughter, and Leo doesnât know if he can handle it. Heâs pretty sure he canât.
Fingers prod at Leoâs stomach and he canât suppress the accompanying flinch, and as the drugs start to wear thin, he feels himself less and less able to accept what is being done to him.
âAlright, Leo,â the doctor says, and Leo opens his eyes and is met with mostly, he thinks, concern.
âIâll be back.â The doctor shoots the handler a look, and Leo wants to close his eyes again, but as the handler approaches, Leo knows, acutely, that itâs a bad idea.
âAre you going to cause a scene?â the handler asks, before lifting the blanket from Leoâs lap. Leo shrinks back, an instant passing in which his entire body goes rigid, but shakes his head âno.â He hopes itâs enough.
He holds his breath, waiting for it to be over, or, waiting for it to start, and feels the handlerâs eyes sliding down his body.
He thinks he might be shaking, but he isnât sure.Â
The doctor returns a moment later, and after a quick assessment of how things have evolved, issues a quick but gentle, âItâs alright.â Itâs not, though, and Leo locks his jaw to keep from crying. He wants to ask if he can close his eyes again. Sometimes they would let him, when things were about to get really bad, in initial training. Sometimes, if he asked clearly, and if he caught them on a good day, they would let him.
âNo wonder he was returned,â the handler says, leaning back against the wall.Â
âCan I close my eyes?â he whispers then, before he can catch the humor in the handlerâs expression. The doctor looks at him once, and nods. Leo doesnât hesitate to clamp his eyes shut, unwilling to chance opening them at all, maybe ever, and instead continues counting in his head.Â
âContinue working on your empathy,â the doctor says evenly, but Leo is pretty sure he isnât speaking to him so he works on breathing and counting and nothing else.
He tries to block out the words. This is another moment in training, and it too will end eventually.Â
âThey put him through hell in training. He has a right to be mistrustful.â And then, to Leo, he says, âIâm going to give you something to help balance you out,â and his touch disappears. âJust hang tight, Leo.âÂ
Without warning, a hand clamps around his neck, pinning him in place. His eyes fly open, his arms pull instinctively against the restraints, as the tip of a syringe is pushed past his teeth and to the back of his throat.
He gags, his head knocking back against the thin pillow, but the handlerâs grip is merciless, and in the next instant, a thick, bitter liquid is sliding down his throat. Tears well in his eyes, and he would swear the culprit was simply the bitterness of the medicine.
Itâs mistaken for something else, though, and the handler releases him as the doctor runs a hand through his hair and says, âYouâre alright.â
Leoâs shaking harder now, and his fingers grip into the pad he lays on and he urges himself to still. His chest aches as he tries to catch his breath, the taste of the medicine still heavy on his tongue. But still, almost immediately, he can feel his body lightening, the tension pulling back until the shaking eases, and the doctor nods, and approaches. Leo canât feel the fear he knows he should feel.Â
He can feel nothing.
Even with the memories of the night before, even with the doctor and the handler so close to him, he can breathe again.
Still, Leo canât contain the subconscious jerk of his body as a flash of sharp pain shoots through him. The doctor issues an apology, along with a soft, âalmost done,â and turns the swab, over and over, as Leoâs legs fight against the hands that hold them in place. He tries to find a place in his mind to retreat into, but he hasnât been there in months, if not longer, and in that moment, it offers no reprieve. He thinks he cries out, locking his teeth and pressing his head back into the pillow as hard as he can to distract himself from what goes on lower. When the doctor is finished, he wipes Leo down and drapes the blanket over his lap.
What he doesnât say is âGood, Leo,â because they would both know it to be untrue.Â
Still, in the next breath, the restraints are being unbuckled, and Leo is lifted at his shoulders until he is sitting, and his wrists are being examined, and there is a hand rubbing his back. He blinks slowly, willing the room back into focus, and he can hear voices but he isnât able to follow their conversation.
âIt doesnât need to be this hard,â he thinks the handler is saying, and even though his head is hung low and his shoulders are scrunched to make him as small as possible, in his peripherals he can see the doctor shooting the handler a sharp look. âWhat?â he bites back. âItâs true.â
âAlright, Leo,â the doctor says then, ignoring the handler entirely. Leo keeps his eyes locked on the ground and he takes the blanket in a white-knuckled grip.
The doctor lets him catch his breath, rubbing his back every few seconds. Leo thinks heâs using it to get a read on his heart rate, but he doesnât care just then. The doctor explains whatâs next, and moves to ease Leo onto his side. Leo, for his part, cooperates, lowering himself slowly, watching as his fingers shake. He wraps his arms so tightly around his stomach he think he might leave bruises, but when the doctor touches him, he doesnât flinch.
âThereâs some bruising,â the doctor says neutrally, but Leo canât look at the handler to see if he types it. It could be from the handlers, or it could be from Parkerâs friends the night before. Leo chokes on his next breath, and in spite of the drugs, he can feel the panic rising.
âLeo?â the doctor says. âAre you doing alright?âÂ
The handler takes a step forward.
âI donât consent to this,â Leo whispers, so softly he isnât sure anyone hears him. The look the handler levels on him is scathing. âIâI knâŠknow it doesnât⊠I know it doesnât matter.â His voice is soft, slurred around the edges, but clear enough. âBut I⊠I j-justâ I want to make sure you know.â
The doctor says nothing, and the handler frowns. Leo wants to ask him to type it into his chart, but the doctor moves behind him, and Leoâs vision is suddenly and immediately blurred by his tears.Â
By the time they finish, by the time the doctor drapes the blanket over his hips, letting his hand rest on Leoâs head briefly before retreating, Leoâs body is wracked with sobs. They leave him to calm himself down, and he finds himself, for a moment, grateful for the simple mercy.
But he cannot stop crying, as he stares into the mirror and thinks of all heâs lost. Of what, in spite of what he tried to convince himself he could have, he will never have. Of Parker, laughing with his friends as he picks out a new worker. Of the handler, and all those that came before him, smiling as they hurt him. The door opens with no warning and a familiar voice, a voice warm enough to burn Leoâs entire world down, issues a commanding, clear, âStop this, Leo.âÂ
And almost instantly, Leo stops.

What Happens Afterwards?
I read this post by @acowardinmordor and was obsessed with what happened next. Written with their blessing.
also on AO3
tw: overdose, drugs, near death experience, mentions of HIV
Summary:
Famous Eddie doesn't touch drugs...too bad Steve does After Steve ODs at a Corroded Coffin concert, he wakes up in the hospital.
Steve woke up groggy and confused. Is he in a hospital? Suddenly the night rushed back to him. He did a line, borrowed a needle. Heâd meant to go back to the dressing room, but he hit the deck before he could. Shit!
He shot up and frantically looked around, hoping beyond all hope that he was alone. Luck was not on his side though, because Eddie was asleep in the hospital chair next to him. Steve took a long look at the love of his life. His eyes were red and puffy with deep bags. His hair was a tangled mess as if heâd been yanking on it. And his clothes were rumpled as if he hadnât changed them in days.
Steve sighed. He really didnât want to have this confrontation right now. Before that thought could even leave his brain, Eddie opened his eyes and met Steveâs. The pools of chocolate were filled with a myriad of emotions. He leaned forward and took Steveâs hand.
âHey, Stevie. Howâre you feeling?â He asked softly as he reached over and pressed the nurse call button. Steve was confused by the softness, but he wasnât going to complain.
âHow did I get here?â He asked instead, dropping his gaze.
âYou were brought in as a John Doe after the concert baby.â He whispered, his voice thick. âThey said you overdosed.â He didnât sound angry, Steve would have preferred that. Instead he sounded guilty. Steve forced himself to look and felt bile rise up at the expression on Eddieâs face. âIâm sorry baby.â Eddie said. âIâm so sorry.â Tears ran down his already tear coated cheeks. Steve expected yelling, berating, and ultimatum. Anything but an apology.
âSorry for what, Eds?â He asked. âYou didnât do anything.â That turned out to be the wrong thing to say as it turns Eddieâs cries into sobs. Something sour built a home in Steveâs chest.
âExactly! I didnât do anything!â He said emphatically, gesturing wildly. âYou were missing! And i didnât do anything! I let everyone else handle it while i panicked. I still played the show. I didnât follow my gut and looked who the junkies were that night!â Tears streamed down his face, but the words rattled something in him.
âHow long have I been here?â Steve asked hesitantly. Eddie took a stuttered breath.
âFive days. Youâve been here for five days. You were missing for over 24 hours.â He bit his lip trying to stifle more tears.
Steve was floored. Five days?! WaitâŠmissing? âOh, baby.â Steve said, mournfully running the hand not hooked up to anything along Eddieâs cheek. He melted into the contact and put his hand over Steveâs. âIâm sorry for putting this much stress on you.â
âFor a minute there, Iâd thought it came back.â Steve knew exactly what Eddie meant. The upside down. âBut when I found out you ODedâŠI almost wish it had.â Eddie admitted. âThis is all my fault.â He whispered unable to hold the tears back any longer.
Steve felt like heâd been on top of the world from what he could remember of the high, and he thought about chasing that rabbit. But the look in Eddieâs eyes, the deep well of pure devastation and guilt swirled together, made Steve pause. He couldnât do this to Eddie again. âThis isnât on you.â Steve insisted. âI told you I quit. You had no reason to assume Iâd be in that bathroom.â Eddie just shook his head.
âIf I hadnât forced you on the road, you never wouldâve had access to this kind of hardcore shit in the first place. If I spent more time with you, if I never left you alone, you wouldnât have felt the need to do this.â Eddie trembled. âI should have protected you better, I knew what that shit could do, Iâm so sorry baby.â Steve knew then that there wasnât anything he could say. Eddie would blame himself for this until the end of time.
That more than anything else, broke Steve down. âIâm sorry, love.â His voice trembled. âI shouldnât have lied. I just didnât want you to worry.â He flipped his hand up in offer. Eddie immediately filled it with his. He squeezed it as he continued. âYou had so much to worry about, I didnât want to be another. But I should have known that youâd worry anyway.â Steve looked away, ashamed.
âBabyâŠâ he was cut off as a doctor came in.
âWell, Mr. Harrington. Youâre lucky to be alive. The cocktail of drugs you took was extreme.â The doctor said.
âWhat do you mean?â Eddie asked.
âThe heroine appeared to be laced with meth. And the line he did was cocaine and ecstasy.â The doctor said calmly. Eddie gasped a shuddering breath and his hands shook in Steveâs grasp.
âI didnât know the heroine was laced.â He said. âIt wasnât my needle.â The regret was finally showing up. At this the doctorâs eyebrows rose to his hairline. Eddie yanked his hands away and covered his mouth.
âIâll send in a nurse to grab some blood so we can run some tests.â He said. âIn the meantime Mr. Munson, I recommend limited physical contact.â He directed that to Eddie with a look of sympathy. He nodded and the doctor took his leave. Tears sprang to Eddieâs eyes and ran down his face.
âYou shared needles, Stevie?â He asked in shock, his voice quiet. His fear was clear on his face. âHave you beenâŠdoing other things for the drugs?â Steve had to come clean.
âIâd do pretty much anything for them.â He admitted.
Eddie stood up quickly and made to leave the room. âIâm going to go let Robin know youâre awake.â He dashed out before Steve could say anything else.
He fucked up. He always felt guilty after the high wore off, but this time it was horrible. Heâs in the hospital, after disappearing for over a day. He should have been more careful. He knew sharing needles wasnât the best plan, but at the time the high was worth it. But the look of betrayal, sadness, and the tiniest glimmer of disgust on Eddieâs face just now, was enough to make him never want to touch another pill. Sleep snuck up on him and he prayed that Eddie would be back when he woke up again.
His prayer went unanswered. The next time he woke up, it was Robin by his bedside. She was staring at the TV but she wasnât really watching it. âHey Robsâ he said. She whipped her head around so fast he wouldnât be surprised if it popped off.
âSteve! Youâre awake!â She exclaimed. The smile on her face fell quickly. âYouâre an idiot. If you werenât in this hospital bed right now, Iâd smack you.â He shrunk down in the face of her ire. âWhat were you thinking?!â She shrieked.
âI didnât think itâd be that bad.â He admitted. The fire in her eyes could set the arctic ablaze.
âNot that bad? Not that bad?! You ODed at Eddieâs concert.â She began counting on her fingers. âYou lied about being clean. You shared needles with some random junkies!â On the last point she threw her hands up. âHow often have you done that? Donât lie to me Steve.â Her eyes narrowed.
âEvery once in a while when I get the itch for it. Maybe once every few months or so.â He admitted grimly. Robinâs eyes narrowed.
âSo however many months youâve been doing this, youâve been sharing needles?â She clarified. At Steveâs nod she sprang up and paced the room. âEvery time?â
âNot every time, but not rarely either.â He said as guilt started to creep into his stomach. She ran her hands into her hair and yanked on it softly.
âHave you been getting tested at least?â She asked.
âIâm not cheating on Eddie, Robin!â Steve yelled, hurt that sheâd even imply that. She stopped pacing and turned to him.
âOkay, first. I didnât say that. Second, your word has no credibility right now. I know you wouldnât, dingus. Thatâs not why I was asking.â She grabbed his hand. Before she could continue, a nurse came in.
âOh good! Youâre awake. Iâm going to be taking some blood okay?â She asked but really was demanding. She glared at Steve as he held out his arm for her.
âIs everything okay?â Robin asked. The nurse turned to her and gave a small smile before glaring again at Steve.
âWith the patient, everything is looking like itâs returning to normal.â She snapped the tourniquet into place but when Steve flinched she didnât look remorseful. She drew a few vials of blood, stuck a bandaid on, and pulled off the tourniquet all in silence. As she got cleaned up to leave, she finally spoke. âLook kid, itâs not my place. But that boy out there? I can take a guess as to what your relationship is with him.â She flashed a tiny pride flag pinned inside her scrubs. âHe cares about you so much. He was beside himself when he came in and saw you, he had you moved to this room, he asked us if there was any kind of experimental treatment, anything to help you.â She turned that glare on him again. âHe loves you to the ends of the earth and he will never leave you. You better clean up your act to be worthy of that devotion, because make no mistake. He would let you drain his veins and apologize for not bleeding out faster.â She stalked over to Robin and handed her a stack of papers. She jabbed a finger in his face, âdonât you dare break up with him in a misguided attempt to save him from you. You clean up your act. If not for yourself, then for him.â With that she stomped out of the room and practically slammed the door behind her. For a moment neither of them said a word. Steve was filled with regret and Robin was a bit smug. She looked down at the stack of papers. Rehab clinics.
âShould we pick one?â Robin asked.
âI think I want to do it with Eddie.â Steve replied. âThe nurse was right. And so were you. Iâve taken him for granted and my word means shit right now. I want to prove to him that I want to get clean.â Robin hesitated.
âDo you?â She asked. âYou donât seem particularly regretful about the actual drugs.â Her tone was soft even though her words were harsh.
âI do!â Steve exclaimed. âYou didnât see the look on Eddieâs face, Robbie. He was devastated and blamed himself for all of it. When I told him Iâd do anything for the drugs he got up and left. I donât think heâs coming back in.â He trailed off into a whisper. Robin took hold of his hand.
âStevie, heâs right outside.â She said. At Steveâs confused look she continued. âHeâs sitting on a bench right next to the door. He wanted to come back in, but I asked him to let me talk to you alone.â
âWhy?â Steve asked. Robinâs eyes hardened.
âBecause what Iâm about to say, he wouldnât like, but as your best friend I have to tell you hard truths. And Eddie's my best friend too so I have to protect him.â She took a deep breath. âYou deserved his love once Steve. I truly believe that. But right now, his love for you is hurting him. And the only one who can fix it? Is you. He hasnât slept or eaten practically at all since you disappeared.â Steve flinched at the word disappeared. âWhen he called me he was sobbing so hard I thought you died Steve.â Her eyes watered. âHe kept repeating âitâs all my fault. I did this to himâ and Jeff had to take the phone to explain what was going on. When I got here, you were still touch and go. You died on the way here, Steve. They had to resuscitate you. The sound he made when the doctors told him thatâŠâ she shuddered. âI felt his heart shatter. The nurse is right. He will forgive you and he wonât ever stop loving you and he wonât ever leave you.â Her eyes got intense again. âSo you need to promise me. Promise me! That youâll take care of yourself. Because I donât think I could survive watching him wither away if you leave him.â The emphasis she put on leave tore Steve apart. She didnât mean break up with him. She meant leave him. âYou donât deserve his devotion. Not after you lied to him for months. But you have it. So now, you need to cherish it. Got it?â She asked. Steve could only nod as the dam finally broke. They held each otherâs hands as they cried together.
~~~
âCan you get Eddie? Please.â He asked after his eyes dried up. Robin nodded and dashed out the door, waving Eddie inside.
Steveâs heart broke at the sight of him. He looked exhausted and his eyes were red rimmed as if heâd been crying for hours. Steve held a hand out to him and Eddie rushed to take it. Steve slid over in the hospital bed, yanking Eddie in after him. He curled around him and held him close being mindful of the wires in his hand as he draped it on Eddieâs chest. Eddie took a deep breath but Steve could feel the anxiety still thrumming under his skin. âIâm sorry, love.â Steve whispered. âI shouldnât have lied.â He halted when he heard the sniffles. He sat up, peering at Eddie. His cheeks were wet again and Steve reached up to wipe them clean.
âStevie, I have to askâŠâ he began. âAnd I hate to even think it. ButâŠâ he paused. âDid youâŠwhen you said youâd do anything for the drugs. Did you sleep with people for them?â He finally spit out. Steve wanted to be mad. He wanted to hiss and spit and rage at the accusation. But he knew that wasnât fair to Eddie. He was within his rights to ask.
âNo my love.â Steve promised. âNever.â Eddie nodded and sighed with relief. âI donât know how much my word is worth right now.â He admitted. Eddie pressed a finger to his lips.
âI trust you.â He said. Those three words broke Steve. How could Eddie trust his word after everything? He asked him as much. Eddie just smiled softly. âI trust you because I want to. Thatâs all there is to it.â
âIâm sorry for everything.â Steve repeated desperately.
âI forgive you.â Eddie promised. âNow, letâs forget the past for a minute and focus on the future.â Eddie said. Steve looked over his shoulder to the door to the room and saw Robin and the Coffin boys. The boys were glaring at Steve but he knew it was because he hurt their friend.
Steve grabbed the rehab brochures and the two went over them until they found one that had a branch in DC. âI donât want you to cancel the tour Eddie.â Steve was adamant. He ruined enough of the tour so far and he wouldnât be the reason it ended. At least in DC heâd be close to Robin who would keep him in line. She promised Eddie daily updates (real updates) once Steve got out until the end of the tour. Eddie finally agreed after the boys convinced him heâd need the distraction so he wouldnât be pacing around the house all day.
Steve leaned up to kiss him, but Eddie pulled away. The regret in his eyes was almost enough to soothe the hurt. âNot yet Stevie, okay?â He asked. Steve nodded but his head tilted in confusion. âNot until the blood tests come back.â He explained. Suddenly, Steve understood. He put himself at risk and Eddie too. The virus going around was deadly and Steve had been careless. Playing russian roulette with not only his life, but Eddieâs too and by extension the bandâs.
The shame that filled him was so intense he reached over and retched into the nearby bed pan. Robin ran over with a trashcan and he kept heaving. Eddie rubbed his back as he emptied his body. âIâm sorry. Iâm so sorry. IâŠâ he cut off by dry heaving. He finally understood why Eddie ran from the room earlier and why the nurse glared at him. Heâs a monster. He put the love of his life at risk of contracting a deadly disease just so he could get a fix. What the hell was wrong with him?
When he was finally done, he was exhausted. âSleep baby.â Eddie whispered. Steve clutched tight to his hand.
âWill you stay with me?â He asked. As his eyes drifted shut.
âForever.â Eddie whispered as Steve floated off into a dreamless sleep. His last thought was that he needed to prove he was worth forever.
~~~
The next time he woke up, Eddie was still there. Asleep curled up beside him. But in the chair next to him was someone he hoped not to see. Wayne. Their eyes met and he didnât say anything, he just raised his right eyebrow and Steve folded. He apologized for letting Wayne down, for hurting Eddie, for lying about it. He begged Wayneâs forgiveness, but the man didnât respond. His gaze flickered to his sleeping nephew and softened.
âYou listen to me boy.â Wayne said. âMy nephew is a gentle soul, quick to forgive and let things go. You should know that based on how he was after that spring break.â They both shivered at the memory. âSo, heâs not going to want to hold you accountable. Heâd rather just move on and take your word for it. But lucky for him, and not so lucky for you, I will be holding you accountable.â He leaned in. âI love you like one of my own Steve, I really do. But I love my brother too and he ainât seen Eddie since they locked him up. Eddie forgave him within days, trusted him. I learned then, that if Eddie loved someone, heâd forgive pretty much everything just to keep them around. So Iâll tell you the same thing I told Al. Eddie is my boy, first. And I will protect him from anything that will hurt him, even if itâs himself. So Iâll be holding you accountable. Youâre going to rehab?â Wayne asked. At Steveâs nod and explanation of where, he continued. âYouâre going to give the rehab my information as someone who they can talk to. Iâm going to call to check up whenever I see fit. Got it?â
âYes sirâ Steve replied. The nurse from before knocked and opened the door quietly. She paused as she saw Eddie curled up in the bed next to Steve. She gently shook him awake.
âMr. Munson? We have both of your blood tests back.â At this Eddie was wide awake.
âYou got some blood tests done Ed?â Wayne asked.
âYeah, just umâŠjust in case you know?â He trailed off not making eye contact with his uncle.
âGood news or bad news first?â She asked.
âBad news first, always.â Eddie and Steve replied in tandem. They shared a private smile.
âBad news, Steve you have moderate kidney damage. It wonât take much more to send them into failure.â She said with hard eyes.
âAnd the good news?â Wayne spoke up.
âGood news, you both are negative for any STDs. Including HIV.â The three men breathed a huge sigh of relief. The nurse turned to Steve. âYou got lucky kid. Donât forget that.â Steve assured her he wouldnât and she left with a nod. He couldnât believe heâd been so reckless. He turned to Eddie and was immediately pulled into a soft kiss.
~~~
âThey said youâll be discharged soon.â Robin said later. âThen what?â It was just the two of them.
âThen, Eddie drops me off at rehab and I get help. I stay clean. I do everything to be worthy of him.â He declared. Robin nodded her approval. Eddie came back from the hotel with all of their things packed away in a rental car. He slid into bed next to Steve.
âHey, baby. You ready?â He asked. Steve nodded and they all left the hospital. The three of them piled into the car and drove Robin to the airport. She was going to fly back to give the boys some time alone. She hugged Steve and then Eddie. She whispered something in the his ear that had him tearing up. She went into the airport with a promise to call Wayne if she ran into any trouble.
Then it was just the two of them. They spent the first hour or so making idle small talk before the curiosity got the best of him. âWhat did Robin say to you?â He asked.
âNothing important.â Eddie answered far too quickly.
âOh, come on. You can tell me.â He knew he was being annoying but he didnât want to think about what was awaiting him at the end of the ride. Eddie sighed, he never could keep something from Steve.
âShe said if I could forgive you, I should forgive myself.â He admitted.
âYou still blame yourself, love?â Steve asked. Eddie bit his lip as he nodded.
âIf I hadnât dragged you on tour, you never would have found that stuff.â Steve couldnât let this stand. He knew he had to finally come clean.
âI was already doing it.â At Eddieâs questioning noise he continued. âAs soon as we got to LA, I was looking for it. I did it at those events because it was free from someone else's supply.â He took a breath and glanced at Eddie before he admitted the next bit. âI didnât get into this shit because I was on tour with you. I wanted to go on tour because I didnât want to be away from you. That it would be way easier to get my hands on shit, just sweetened the deal.â
Eddie was quiet for a while after that. Steve glanced over and saw his cheeks were wet. Heâd made him cry again. âSo, you didnât start them because of me?â He whispered.
âNo love. And to be clear, even if I started on tour, it still wouldnât have been your fault. You didnât hold me down and force a line up my nose okay?â He reached out and wiped away a tear. âThis was my choice. Just like going to rehab is my choice. If I didnât really want to go, I wouldnât.â His conviction was clear. Eddie pulled to the side of the road to kiss Steve softly before they drove the rest of the way in comfortable conversation.
They arrived at the rehab center and Eddie walked him inside. He checked in, Eddie handed over his credit card, Steve handed it right back and handed his over. The attendant smiled and swiped Steveâs card giving the boys a moment alone. They held each other close and kissed not caring at the moment who saw them. âI love you, baby. Don't forget okay?â Eddie whispered leaning his forehead to Steveâs.
âI know, love. I love you too. More than life.â He replied. He gave a final kiss to Eddieâs lips and followed the attendant into the center. He was determined to come out a new man.
~~~
Six grueling weeks later, Steve was out. He had a sponsor and group therapy sessions. Waiting to pick him up was Robin. Eddie was on the last few weeks of the tour. They had to extend it a bit to cover for Steveâs hospital stay. Robin gave him a long hug. âReady to bust out?â She asked and they both got into the car. He lasted barely five minutes.
âHow is he?â Steve and Eddie didnât speak at all during his rehab. The center thought Eddie being on the road would be triggering to Steve. And to be frank, Wayne thought Eddie needed to distance himself from the process for a bit. Wayne and Robin had kept them both informed on the other.
âHeâs okay. I meanâŠhe misses you terribly, but heâs been coping on tour.â Robin said. Thankfully the drive wasnât very long. Steve wanted to be in a familiar place, even if life outside of rehab was scary. They pulled up to Robinâs building and Steve stepped in after her.
There was a loud pop and confetti raining down on him. âWelcome home Steve!â Came several voices he was not expecting. The entire party was here. Wayne, Hopper, and Joyce too. But what brought him to tears was the sight to his left. Eddie was there, holding his arms open. Steve ran into them, nearly knocking them both to the ground.
âI thought your tour didnât end for a few more weeks?â He asked in between kisses.
âI lied about the end date to surprise you.â He admitted holding Steve close. âAre you surprised?â
âVery! A good surprised!â The two pulled apart so everyone else could greet Steve. Eddie didnât go far, not letting go of Steveâs hand the entire time. Heâd felt better in rehab once the withdrawals subsided. More clear headed, more aware. But he didnât feel completely healed. Feeling the warmth of Eddieâs hand in his, Steve felt hopeful for the future. As he made eye contact with the man again, Steve silently promised to stay clean. Not for just Eddie. But for himself too.
~~~
He skipped the next tour as recommended by his therapist. The two men decided it would be better if he wasn't alone, so Wayne stayed with him. He'd been retired from the plant and wanted to move out to LA with Eddie anyway.
He and Eddie had a hard time, but they make due with calls and letters. On one memorable occasion Steve sent a racy Polaroid. That night, Eddie called already worked up and they had a wonderful time. The reunion was so sweet. They were locked in their bedroom for days, coming out only for food and water. The rest of their friends knew better than to come visit until the love birds made the first move.
The band wrote a new album and started a nonprofit for drug addicts. It helped those who couldn't afford to get clean and see therapists, providing them with clean needles and clean drugs to help ween off them. Steve didn't shy away from his overdose, or the affect it had on those around him and he encouraged the others not to either. Eddie did several interviews on how helpless he felt when his "best friend" was taken to the hospital as a John Doe. This spurred the nonprofit to add resources for loved ones of addicts too.
Steve had been sober for three years when he went on tour with the band again. For real this time. He got clean and he stayed clean. When he was offered something at a party, he couldn't say he wasn't tempted. But he'd look over to see his love laughing and knew he'd do anything to keep that sound in the world. He never wanted to jeopardize Eddie's happiness again and he finally accepted he was his happiness.
And the next time the band played The Garden, Steve was on the sidelines cheering for Eddie and the band. He made sure Eddie could always see him and know he was safe. That look of guilt and devastation he saw in the hospital never returned to Eddie's face and Steve was determined to keep it that way.
Kate pauses, the coffee pot titled over her to-go mug as the freshly-brewed dark roast starts to fill it. âAnother undercover assignment? For both of us?â Lucy carefully takes the pot from Kate, leveling it off before all 8 ounces end up on the counter. âCool, right? A joint undercover operation. Thelma and Lousie, teaming up to take on the bad guys.â
I never would have guessed that liking a kids cartoon would lead to me reading a fic where a 14 year old child gets vivisected by his parents cuz they don't believe he's human anymore.
My stomach hurts, but not in a "this is gross, I'm gonna hurl" kinda way. More like a "If I remove pressure from my torso, my guts are gonna spill on the floor in sympathy" kinda way.
One awful thing about Forever being trapped in the Nether, just as Etoiles was before him, is that you canât sleep there. No proper rest. No *bed*. Attempts to do that result in explosions. There is no safe space here for you.
Forever is a good man - not an innocent one, but tries so hard to be good from the core of his very being, in his actions and deeds - who believes he deserves to be punished for his failings. And he has been tricked most harshly with a quest phrased as an ultimatum: fix things in a place no one is meant to go, or his son will be at risk.
And like Phil before him, he followed the orders - tell no one, go alone, be prepared - to the letter. For love of his child.
For the thinnest sliver of a chance to fix things. Hope, used against him.
You shouldnât be here, Mr. President.
The Nether is a hell dimension and there will be no rest for the wicked.
I've noticed this since the trailer, but haven't seen anyone point it out yet, so...
Does that look like a tear?
It's only noticeable in this one shot, as far as I can tell, but like it has to be right? Unless they made a mistake... Or he accidentally splashed vodka in his eye... (ouch)
