~spies of the guard, #2~
premise:
concept
main characters
central conflict
a community of children (more than a community really, a civilisation) - training to be spies of the guard (for the crown). they have lived in this community, for some, from 6 years old. the oldest they can be accepted is 10.
in this community, they do a combination of lessons and challenges. if the children are deemed unfit for the job, they're returned to regular life under a false alias. their memory is wiped.
war criminals are sent to their islands, for them to practice assassination and other skills. occasionally, guards/current spies come - they teach the children.
three months before their 19th birthday, the children are 'judged'. if seen fit, they are sent to the guard at 19 years and 1 month.
once they are in service, the job is dangerous - and often the children last 2-10 years (either alive or in work). each child has unique and special skillsets.
there is a traitor in the ranks and no one knows who it is. suspects are sent away, no matter their skill. the children are worried. 10 (mc's) are sent on a mission to the mainland.
calum believes he knows who the traitor is. he takes it upon himself to rid them...

Review of: “Seveneves”
Seveneves (2015) Writers: Neal Stephenson Release Date: May 19, 2015 Awards: 2016 – Nominated, Hugo Award for Best Novel. Won, Prometheus Award for Best Novel. Film Adaptation: 2016 – Skydance Media and Imagine Entertainment own the rights with screenwriter William Broyles Jr., director Ron Howard, and producer Brian Grazer attached to the project. 2024 – No updates other than the 2016 announcement. Audiobook Runtime: Roughly 38 hours.
Spoilers Ahead, You Have Been Warned...
Plot: Set in a near-future Earth facing imminent destruction due to a catastrophic event: the sudden disintegration of the moon. The story follows humanity's desperate struggle for survival as they race against time to escape Earth's impending doom. The novel is divided into three parts: the initial effort to preserve human civilization in orbit, the struggle to rebuild society after the cataclysm, and a distant future where humanity has evolved and adapted to life in space.
This audiobook was 30+ hours of technical babble, and while a good book and idea, I ultimately did not care for how the story flowed. I oftentimes blanked out while listening to this over long stretches. It has some really great stuff in it, but lacks decent characterization. Four major plot holes that many other reviews keep saying is “ambiguous,” but I argue, “no, these are plot holes…”
Plot hole – 1) The Agent – The event that shatters the Moon. They do not know what caused it or what it really was, but all the book is willing to dive into and was willing to discover was something very small, moving very fast. struck the moon at the core and shattered it. The book states it was heavily investigated, but they couldn’t really figure it out if it was an act of malice by an outside the Earth influence or not, (aliens or act of GOD/god)… To me, this just doesn’t work. I just fail to understand how humanity just gives up on the search of the cause but uses the reality of what comes next to just write that problem away.
Plot hole – 2) The Mars Mission – A small group of humans break off the swarm of human survivors and attempt to travel to Mars to start anew there. It’s never mentioned again. We do not know what happened to this group. They take a few lines to discuss it but come to the conclusion they do not have the resources to make the trip and will die out due to all of this in short order. As I said, it is never mentioned again, even after the third part of the book that takes place 5,000 years later.
Plot hole – 3) JBF not being punished for war crimes against humanity – Julia Bliss Flaherty, mostly referred to as ‘JBF’. She is President of the United States during the early parts of the story. A combination of Trump/Biden/narcissistic-sociopath, who is guilty for nuking a country and responsible for the deaths of 99.5% of all surviving humans. She violates the international accord, that no world leaders will save themselves, by saving herself, fleeing to the ISS aboard a stolen Boeing X-37, along with Pete Starling, her science advisor. JBF attempts to reassert her leadership and persuades a large number of Cloud Ark survivors to abandon the ISS/Swarm. JBF loses control fast and a war ensues among the dissents. This leads to JBF directly being responsible for the death of nearly all of what is left of the human race, beside the handful of survivors. The second she started to become a social problem she should have been ejected out of the airlock. It was agreed nothing of the old world was to rule over this new one.
Plot hole – 4) The Purpose – Basically, it is the spacer’s religion but it isn’t really clear as to what the purpose is and what it is all about. It’s just left open to interpretation which is what is wrong with this whole plot.
The most interesting aspects are left, not even to the imagination, but rather briefly talked about as if they are uber-important; then just left unanswered, nor do the main characters even care about answering those questions, which, like I said, are the most interesting aspects of the book.
This book would be perfect for the modern-day woke-feminist, with most of, if not all, the character leads being female and all of them being extremely one dimensional and hypersensitive (modern-day woke-feminist). I am not even saying that to be disrespectful. I am saying it because that is what the females act like in this book. They are all full of crap about how they perceive each situation and how their decision making is based on subjective feelings, which would be the worst thing to do while working in space in the real world. You do not have time to get emotional working on and living on the ISS for real and this book tries to be based on a real reality. So just calling a spade a spade there. I immediately related these characters to these attributes. Granted this book was written in 2014-2015. Its 2024 now. It is easy to retrospectively say this and it make sense now, but then, I might have saw the characters in a different light. We live in different times and it isn’t even that long ago.
I do not know if I would ever trust Neal Stephenson again with another story. I mean, the book isn’t terrible. It is good. There is a story about the struggle for survival there. It has some really great stuff going on here. I just think it wasn’t executed very well from a storytelling point of view. Others have read this and loved it. I did like it but thought it was wordy, slow and poor characterization. These issues were deal breakers for me. If a movie ever does comes out. I hope they leave all that messy stuff out of the story and tackle the things that were actually interesting about the story. Tackle these four plot holes to make better sense. Make us care about the characters. Give them some real backstory. Also, who the FK blew up the Moon to begin with?

Target 3PL
https://www.efdcargo.com/ecommerce-3pl-by-e-commerce-platforms/target-3pl/
Target plans to launch a new distribution plan this autumn to improve the express speed and shorten the distribution time to 2-3 days, so as to compete with Amazon.
Hugo learned from recent reports by foreign media that the target 3pl plan is called "available to promise", and target 3pl said it can shorten the delivery time from 7-10 days to 2-3 days. Customers can know the specific delivery date rather than an approximate time range.
At present, consumers can purchase more than $25 at target 3pl without shipping, and the products will be delivered within 3-5 days. However, compared with other physical store retailers, target 3pl cannot provide the exact arrival time of packages. This is not only because the company's warehouse and logistics center were originally designed for the inventory of distribution malls, but also the company did not focus on the delivery speed.
Therefore, it is difficult for target 3pl to compete with Amazon in logistics. Amazon Prime members can get the package within two days.
In order to improve the speed, target 3pl has started to deliver goods from stores and warehouses. At present, 140 stores can deliver online orders. It is expected that the number of stores will exceed 450 by the end of the year, and target 3pl has 1800 stores.

Recipe Wednesday #41
Happy Holidays and Happy Recipe Wednesday!
These are real period recipes, taken from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, a local newspaper that would have been accessible to Steve, his mother, and Bucky during their time in Brooklyn.
For the month of December, Recipe Wednesday is being extended to all month long with Christmas Treats!
The recipes come from the Saturday 18, Wednesday 22, Monday 27, and Thursday 30 December 1937 editions of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. For context, Steve would have been 17 (comics) / 19 (MCU), so these are recipes that Steve might have learnt/inherited from his mother or read himself in the newspaper.
A Holiday Eggnog 6 eggs ½ cup granulated sugar 3 quarts of milk 1 pint of cream 1 quart of whiskey 1 pint of rum Beat the eggs in a chilled bowl until they are light and foamy. Add sugar, blending it in thoroughly. Add milk and cream and beat to a froth with a rotary egg beater. Then slowly add the whiskey and rum, beating continuously. Add a sprinkling of nutmeg. Place the bowl in a tub of ice until time for serving.
Fruit Punch But you might not care for punch that strong. In that case make a fruit drink. Mixtures of the juices of several fruits are always good. Blend your own choices. Then give the concoction a little zip but filling the bowl with ginger ale or bubbling, charged water. Mix in pieces of fruit; they dress up the drink.
Egg Nog Yolks of 6 eggs—beat until light. Beat ½ pound of sugar into eggs. Add 1 pint Victor Hugo Brandy (90 proof). Stir continuously and add 1 quart milk. Whip ½ pint cream and stir in slowly. Sprinkle with nutmeg.
Decorative Ice Cubes Whichever liquid you fill the bowl with, you should have a generous cake of ice floating on the surface. Use a plain chunk, if you choose, but arrange some sliced fruits, cherries and some green on top to dress it up. A better idea is to make your own cake of ice, freezing the decorations into it. You need a mechanical refrigerator for that. Proceed thus: Take the cube partitions out of the large tray. Fill with cold water and chill it. When the water is half frozen, insert slices of candied fruits and preserved cherries, arranging them in some attractive pattern. Then when the block has frozen solid, float it in your punch.
Claret Punch 8 orange juiced 8 lemons, juiced 2 quarts pineapple juice 8 ounces granulated sugar 1 quart claret 2 quarts cracked ice Combine fruit juices and sugar. Chill and add claret. Pour over ice. Garnish with cut fruits and mint.
Shrewsbury Cakes ½ cup butter 1 cup sugar 1 egg, beaten 1/8 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon lemon extract ½ teaspoon soda 2 cups flour ¼ teaspoon nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon mace ½ cup buttermilk Cream butter, add sugar, add beaten egg, and beat well. Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with the buttermilk to the first mixture. Add flavoring. Sprinkle with sugar and bake about 10 minutes in a moderately hot oven (400 F.). To dress the cakes up a bit increase the buttermilk to cup. Spread dough on a buttered baking pan and bake as above. Then cut into fancy shapes, such as Christmas trees, stars and Santa Clauses. There are many recipes for Shrewsbury Cakes, but this is a particularly simple one. The cakes are delicious with milk or with hot chocolate, and they make excellent partners for ice cream.
Coconut Date Goodies 1 ½ tablespoons flour ½ cup sugar 1 cup shredded dates 1 ¼ cups shredded coconut ¼ cup cream ¼ teaspoon almond extract ¼ teaspoon orange extract 1 beaten egg white Mix the flour with all but two tablespoons of the sugar. Stir in the dates and coconut. Add the cream and flavorings. Beat the egg white until frothy, add the remaining sugar and continue beating until stiff and dry. Fold this lightly into the mixture and bake on a well-buttered pan for 20 or 25 minutes in a slow oven (300 F.). Remove carefully while hot and place on rack to cool. These goodies may be called either candies or cookies. They are delicious with a glass of milk.
Holiday Apple Cups 2 cups McIntosh apple sauce 4 McIntosh apples 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 cup sugar Mix 2 cups applesauce—the kind made from McIntosh apples has a lovely tinge—with 2 cups water, lemon juice, sugar, and freeze. Cut tops from McIntosh apples and scoop out as much plul as possible. Fill cups with frozen mixture, piling it in a mound. Decorate top of mound with green cherry and candied mint leaves or leaves of angelica.
Christmas Bread 1 yeast cake 3 tablespoons lukewarm milk ¼ cup sugar ½ cup butter 2 cups scalded milk 7 ½ cups flour 1 cup raisins 1 cup currents 1 cup candied fruit peel 3 eggs, beaten Soften the yeast cake in 3 tablespoons of lukewarm milk. Add sugar and butter to scalded milk. Stir well. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast and 4 cups of flour. Beat. Cover and let rise overnight. Add eggs and fruit to dough and add enough flour to knead (about 3 ½ cups). Knead dough until it is smooth and does not stick to board. Shape into buttered cake pans or buttered bread pans and let rise until double in bulk. Punch down lightly, sprinkle with sugar and let rise again. Bake in a moderately hot oven (400 F.) until the bread is done.
Spicy Baked Apples 6 Baldwin apples 1 ½ cups sugar ½ teaspoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon butter Blanched almonds Pare and core Bladwin apples. Cook sugar in 2 ½ cups water for 3 minutes. Cook apples in this syrup until tender, turning frequently. Drain apples and place in baking dish. To sirup remaining in pan add butter and sugar and surrounding space in baking dish with sirup. Dot apples with almonds (6 to 8 to each apple) and bake in 450 degrees F. oven long enough to brown nut tips. Cool and serve with whipped cream.
Savory Apple Salad A simple and savory salad that’s bound to be popular with your guests can be made quickly and easily. Just slice apples—Cortlands are best because they stay white even after being cup up—into rings, leaving the skin on. Spread each ring with softened cream cheese and place on a lettuce leaf. In the center of each ring place a date—sprinkle with nutmeats and serve.
Chestnut Stuffing (Bureau of Milk Publicity, Albany) 3 cups bread, crumbled ¼ cup butter, melted 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. pepper 3 tbsp. parsley, chopped ½ small onion, minced 3 tbsp. cream 1 lb. chestnuts Mix ingredients in order given. Prepare chestnuts as follows: Drop them in boiling water for a few minutes to loosen shells. Remove shells and inner skin. Boil until tender. While still hot, run them through coarse sieve.
Mashed Potatoes (Bureau of Milk Publicity, Albany) 1 tbsp. butter, melted 2 tbsp. cream ¼ cup milk, scalded 6 medium-sized potatoes Salt and papper When potatoes are cooked, remove skins and mash with fork or wire potato masher. when free lumps add above quantities of butter, cream and milk to each of mashed potatoes. Beat until light and creamy.
Sting Beans en Creme (Bureau of Milk Publicity, Albany) 1 lb. string beans Salt and pepper 2 tbsp. cream Cut beans in short lengths and cook. When done, drain off water and pour on cream. Put cover on pan and shake beans up and down until they are covered with cream.
Ground Meat Logs 1 pound ground pork 1 pound ground beef 1 pound ground veal 2 eggs 3 teaspoons salt ¼ teaspoon pepper 6 slices bacon Have beef, pork and veal ground together. Combine with eggs and season with salt and pepper. Pat into thin rectangular cakes about ½-inch thick and as nearly 3- by 5-inch thick in size as possible. Spread with bread dressing [see below] and roll. Place in a baking pan and cover with thin bacon slices. Bake in a moderate oven (350 degrees F.) until done, about 1-hour. These may be served with tomato sauce, if desired. “The meat logs may be served with potato chips, tiny burr pickles might be included to add to the tart flavor of the meal. A piquant or crisp vegetable salad or an escalloped vegetable dish might complete the main part of the meal. For a luncheon, fresh fruit makes a good dessert for dinner, perhaps you will want a baked dessert such as apple dumplings, which may be baked in t[he?] oven along with. meat rolls.”
Raisin Stuffing 3 cups small bread cubes 1 small onion, chopped ½ cup chopped celery ½ cup raisins Salt and pepper Meat stock to moisten Combine bread crumbs with finely chopped onion and celery. Add raisins ands season with salt and pepper. Moisten with meat stock, enough to make a quite moist dressing. Spread on ground meat rectangles.

Unintentional Love
Okay this is meant to be day 2 of Varigo week but I am behind so here you go, first kiss scenario - im so sorry about how late this is, im a few days behind and im upset about that too. anyway, i hope you enjoy.
------------------
Varian, in every way, shape and form, was done with Hugo and all his bullshit. Like seriously, this guy couldn’t be more annoying even if he tried. Varian made this all very, very clear to the other, so it came as a massive surprise when he got a text asking for Varian to be his fake boyfriend and date to prom.
The boy had made fun of him relentlessly: never hesitating to make a quip about his hair or tease him for his close friendship with Isla and Nuru. The blonde was constantly looking for different ways to make fun of him, but deep down Varian knew he wasn’t being serious. Though, the teasing was...less than fun for someone on the receiving end. He certainly wasn’t the worst, but he wasn’t the best whatsoever. Far from it.
If it were anyone else, Varian would’ve immediately declined his offer - spent the night like he planned in his room with Ruddiger playing some video game before having dinner with his dad and heading back up but...well, Hugo was offering some good perks. I mean, full payment for his suit, ticket AND $200 anyway? It was insane! All to hold some insufferable blonde’s hand for a few hours and dance with him! It was like a deal of a lifetime!
Needless to say, Varian was all in at the mention of money.
All he could think about as he donned the black jacket and buttoned up his teal shirt, reaching out to grab his black tie, was the sheer amount of lab equipment he could get with what Hugo was offering. Even the thought of it made his mouth water as he finished fixing his tie, taking a moment in the mirror to fix his appearance slightly before Quirin’s voice rang out from downstairs. He rushed downstairs, eager to get the night over with so he could finally get his hands on some more beakers and test tubes, tucking his hair behind his ear. “Hey, you ready to go?” Hugo asked from his place in the hallway and Varian’s, standing at the bottom of the stairs, mouth went dry.
Hugo stood in his hallway, his hands in his pockets with a black jacket, dark green shirt and black tie, matching Varian’s attire. Blonde hair was tied up in a ponytail with a smug smile on his face, showing off his undercut and his green eyes glanced up at Varian from behind his obnoxiously large glasses. Had his eyes always looked that bright? His cheeks began to heat up slightly before he shook his head and smiled. “I’m..yeah. Yeah, let’s go.” His voice shook as he walked beside Hugo towards the door and into the cold air of the night.
“Thanks for this, goggles.” Hugo muttered as they drove towards their high school, his hand on the steering wheel and eyes ahead. No sign of insincerity was present in his voice, Varian could swear he saw a red flush on the other’s cheeks. “You...really didn’t have to. But you did. And I appreciate it. A lot.” Hugo confessed as he tapped his finger to the song playing through the old car’s radio - it sounded like something by The 1975. Of course Hugo would like them.
“It's no problem. After all, now you owe me two hundred dollars so..” he started, breaking out into a little chuckle. “I don’t mind helping you out every once in a while, Hugo. Just don't make it weird.” “You’re the one who will make it weird, goggles. I mean, your face is weird enough so-” the blonde laughed as Varian punched his arm, back to their familiar banter and teasing. It was comfortable. Nice. He bit the inside of his cheek as he watched the other boy get lost in a fit of laughter, tears building in his eyes and the smile on his face being wide and infectious. Wow. He really could be beautiful sometimes.
Wait, what?
Varian leaned back in his seat, gazing out of his window. Well, he knew Hugo was an attractive guy - having many boyfriends and girlfriends in the short time Varian knew him. What he lacked in looks, he made up for in personality. Varian swore he certainly was...a character. Hugo’s sarcasm was excessive and his ego was just as large as the stupid glasses on his nose, but..he was funny, and when he was sincere with people, it was the sweetest thing Varian had ever experienced. Like when he was ill and Hugo kept delivering care packages of work, lab supplies and candy to his house anonymously. Varian only found out it was him when Nuru let it slip - the man in question’s face going bright red as he stuttered excuses.
The car halted and the click of Hugo’s seat belt broke him from his train of thought. “You coming?” Hugo questioned, Varian nodding frantically and working to undo his seatbelt with slightly shaky hands. Usually he wouldn’t go to events like these, the mere thought causing crippling fear to him, but he felt safe with Hugo and the money was worth it. Nevertheless, he took Hugo’s hand in his and began to walk inside happily.
As soon as they walked through the double doors to the gym, the music instantly surrounded him and filled his brain, the bass pounding through the floor and shaking him to the core. Couples danced around them, giggles leaving their lips and drinks in their hands as they swayed on the dance floor. Subconsciously, Varian shuffled closer to the boy beside him and snuggled into his arm, gripping onto his arm as though it were his only salvation in the world.
“Hey, I’m gonna go get us some drinks.” Hugo yelled out over the music, carefully pulling his hand away and ruffling Varian’s hair, the smaller male slapping his hand away. Hugo laughed as he headed into the sea of people and, once again, Varian stood alone in the middle of the hall waiting.
Everything was going fine until Leon decided to step over. Leon who was the biggest homophobe in the school and hated gay people with a burning passion. He was just as passionate as Varian was with his sciences, which was….wow it was excessive. He didn’t get it. Why did the kid hate people so much? It made no sense. Oh well, he was sure Leon wouldn’t bother him at all - he hadn’t done anything wrong.
Well he was wrong.
It all happened far too fast. First, Leon had yelled out his name, then he ran over, ‘tripping’ and tipping the punch all over him while their peers laughed and ridiculed him the whole time. His cheeks flushed in discomfort and anxiety as the laughing continued, rushing out of the doors to the hall as tears rolled down his cheeks.
There he sat on the wall, covered in punch and hugging his knees as music blared from inside and vibrant, neon lights flashed, also from the building. He couldn’t believe Leon would do something like that to him - just because he went to prom with a guy instead of a girl. It sucked - the fabric of his shirt sticking to his skin awkwardly and smelling of a rancid mixture of fruit and alcohol. Silence surrounded him until the hall doors swung open and someone took a seat beside him on the wall.
“I’m sorry about what he did. I didn’t know.” he sighed apologetically, Varian glancing over at Hugo as he lit a cigarette and took a drag from it quietly. The moonlight hit his face perfectly, showing off all the sharp angles of his jawline and the tiny constellation-like freckles that were littered all over his cheeks. He was beautiful - and Varian knew it.
“It’s okay, Hugh. Really.” He replied, fiddling with the bottom of his shirt quietly as he bit the inside of his cheek, sighing. “He’s just an asshole.”
“No-you don’t understand.” Hugo began, his voice taking on a nervous tone as a hand threaded through his hair, pulling on the individual strands. “I just...god, Varian..I wanted to ask you to prom, but...I didn’t know how. I just..really like you, goggles. I really, really like you.”
A smile drifted onto V’s lips as he stared at Hugo in amazement. “I like you too, Hugo.” He whispered under his breath, placing a kiss on Hugo’s cheek gently before the other turned his head and pressed their lips together, their only company being the stars in the sky and the pittering rain falling from the dark sky.

AN INCOMPLETE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART LV
THE PARIS PSALTER
The fluent classicism of the illuminations of the Paris Psalter (Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale de France ms. grec 139) convinced 19th-century scholars to date the manuscript to the 6th century. In the 20th century, Kurt Weitzman and Hugo Buchthal contested the late antique date, and conclusively demonstrated that the manuscript was a mid-10th century work of the Macedonian Renaissance. While the later date is irrefutable, the question of whether the manuscript is the product of a self-consciously orchestrated revival of late antique culture, or evidence of the persistence of what Ernst Kitzinger called “perennial Hellenism” well into the Middle Ages, remains unanswered.
The Paris Psalter comprises the 150 psalms of David and the Canticles of the Old Testament. These texts are accompanied by an exhaustive marginal gloss, drawn from the Greek patristic authors. As the length of the commentary allows for only a few lines of scripture per page, the manuscript runs into 449 folios. The same hand that copied the psalter’s text has been detected in 5 other mid-10th century manuscripts, all of which were probably produced in the same Constantinopolitan scriptorium. In the 1950s, Jean Porcher identified the hands of 6 different artists in the 14 full-page illuminations, with the lead artist (Hand A) responsible for 4 of them.
The earliest indirect documentation of the manuscript takes the form of copies of several of the miniatures that appear in late 13th-century manuscripts. These copies suggest that the manuscript was available for copying imperial library after the expulsion of the Latin usurpers, and highly regarded for either is style or its associations with the golden age of Byzantine power and prestige. The first written documentation appears in the manuscript. A colophon of 1558 on folio 1r states that the book was formerly in the library of Jean Hurault de Boistaillé, the French ambassador to Constantinople, whi purchased the book from the Sultan Suleiman I for 100 crowns (Ex bibliotheca Jo. Huralti Boistallerii. Habui ex Constantinopoli pretio coronatorum 100). The library of the Hurault family was acquired for the Bibliothèque du Roi in 1622, which became the core collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
Illuminated psalters served as private prayer books for high ranking lay people and the size of the Paris Psalter alone indicates a patron with vast financial resources. The iconography of the miniatures further confirms this. The text of the psalter is preceded by 7 full-page illuminations and an eighth marking the begunning of the penitential psalms depict key scenes from the life of King David. The subjests chosen allude to David's authorship of the psalms, but focus on his deeds as the divinely-ordained king. This emphasis on biblical kingship, along with the studied classicism of the miniatures, point to the emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (905 - 959) as the patron of the manuscript.
Whether the psalter was intended for Constantine VII’s personal use, or ordered as a gift for his son and successor, Romanos II, its depictions of David’s deeds would have been interpreted as examples of a sanctified ruler’s moral conduct, on which the book’s royal owner could model his own.
Constantive VII was a scholar emperor with a profound interest in Byzantium's classical past. His own voluminous writings on imperial administration, court ceremonial, and his historical writings draw heavily on ancient authors. An accomplished painter himself, the emperor probably closely guided the work of the illuminators. Constantine VII would have been familiar with earlier imperial commissions like the group of 7th-century silver plates depicting scenes from the life of David. The purely classical idiom of works such as the plates clearly served as models for the images of the Paris Psalter. Although certain awkward passages in the miniatures reveal the limitations of the artists’ knowledge of antique style, it has been demonstrated that the illuminators almost certainly derived the atmospheric qualities and convincingly-modeled figures from late antique models, including mural paintings of the types found in Herculaneum.

d’Eath ( prounced DEE - ATH ) means “death” but also “fuel, tinder.”
Age?: Twenty-one.
Gender?: Cis Male.
Pronouns?: Him / He.
Birthday?: March 20th, 1960 ( the first day of spring ).
Zodiac Sign?: Pisces.

Any other notable features (scars, freckles, etc)?: He has a scar over his right breast -- a wizard tried to stake him in the heart as a child, but luckily missed his heart.
CHILDHOOD
What was their relationship with their parents growing up?:
İlaya d’Eath ( nee Burakgazi ): His mother died in childbirth so he never knew her. His father gave him his mother’s name as his first middle name, to remind him that his mother loved him. So while he never knew her personally, he is grateful to her for bringing him into life -- she is a large influence in his music he writes.
Ion d’Eath ( pronounced I - YON ): His father is around one hundred and fifty years old, a full fledged vampire. Ion kept to himself most of his life, secluded, until he found İlaya and they had Lorcan together. With İlaya gone, Ion is very protective over Lorcan his son, especially since he knows that he is the cause of Lorcan’s hardships, being both human and vampire, never being accepted fully by either species for being half-breed. While his father is a little old school, quiet and shows his form of love in non-conventional ways, Lorcan loves him deeply.
Saoirse O’Connor ( prounced SER- SHA ): His vampire “step-mother” -- she is a new vampire, turned by a rogue vampire and rescued by Ion sometime after they moved to Ireland, who he helped teach to live as a vampire. Lorcan doesn’t know her extremely well, as she and his father only started dating about three years ago and he only gets to see her during the summer months; however, he likes her just fine. As long as she makes his father happy, then Lorcan will be happy. She is kind to him and he absolutely loves her strong, Irish accent.
What was their relationship with their siblings growing up (if applicable)?: He was an only child growing up, but now he has a half-sister that he absolutely adores named Ava, who is around two years old. She is a little rascal, always biting everything, and he would do anything to protect her.
Were there any other key people in their childhood? What was their relationship like?: He really only had his father growing up. He made a few friends while he was at Durmstrang Institute, but at that time he was still learning on how to be half-vampire, trying to keep it secret, so he never let anyone get close.
Who was their childhood best friend?: N/A.
What was their lifestyle like growing up?: Lorcan grew up in the countryside, so he’s always enjoyed the outdoors. He was sometimes limited to the physical activites he could do outside, as the sun can weakened him if he is exposed to it for a long time. This was one reason that Ion gifted a guitar to him at a young age, so he had a hobby indoors.

Even for the most simple spells. Hornbeam wands likewise absorb their owner’s code of honour, whatever it may be, and will refuse to perform acts -- whether for good or ill -- that do not tally with their master’s principles. A particularly fine-tuned and sentient wand (source: link).

MISC
What is your opinion on muggles?: He doesn’t think of them often, but he doesn’t have a problem with them, though there is a small fear of humans hunting vampires.
Where do you stand in the upcoming war?: Lorcan has remained neutral, though if he had to choose, he would probably choose the Order, since there was a highest chance of them not mistreating him as a half-breed.
What is your biggest strength?: Aside from the physical strength and speed he gets as a half-vampire, it would be his openness and empathy.
What is your biggest weakness?: He falls in love too easily, and will always put others before himself.

What is your favourite thing about yourself?: HIS DICK one day he will be proud of his vampire heritage.

Wait what’s the Claquesous theory? I know who he is but I’ve never heard him mentioned in the context of the Le Cabuc thing before
Oh dear, coming to me for dark theories based on canon material is certainly a bit outof my comfort zone, but I will do my best!
Basically,Hugo himself puts forth the theory that Claquesous, one fourth of the core ofPatron-Minette, and Le Cabuc, the murderer Enjolras executes at the barricade, are actually the same person. It’s never stated with absolute certainty in thebook, it’s just said that the policethink he is, and there are a lot of strange facts about the two characters thatmake it very plausible.
I mostlystay away from canon era, not surprising for someone who likes thePatron-Minette, but I do appreciate this bit of canon compliant intrigue so inthe name of procrastinating my homework, let’s lay out the evidence~
(I usedthe Hapgood translation for this, but I’ve never gotten the hang of the properBrick reference system, sorry.)
When Claquesousis introduced the principle information we get is this:
“No one wassure whether he had a name, Claquesous being a sobriquet; none was sure that hehad a voice, as his stomach spoke more frequently than his voice; no one wassure that he had a face, as he was never seen without his mask. He disappearedas though he had vanished into thin air; when he appeared, it was as though hesprang from the earth.” (Book 7, Ch 3)
So, he is alet’s say eccentric criminal who “governed the third lower floor of Paris, from 1830 to 1835” with his three comrades, helps Thénardier in his endeavours, and has vanished into thin air by the end of the book. I could not find asingle instance in which he actually speaks on the page, Babet and Montparnassedo most of the talking in Patron-Minette, whenever Thénardier sees fit tofinally shut up that is.
But then,we have Le Cabuc, who is introduced in the very chapter title: “Chapter VIII ManyInterrogation Points With Regard To A Certain Le Cabuc Whose Name May Not HaveBeen Le Cabuc”. He is described as “a passer-by who had joined the rabble ledby Enjolras, Combeferre and Courfeyrac”, is dressed like a shabby street porterand is very loud and animated, giving him the look of “a drunken savage”. Hugo thenadds to this description:
“This man, whose name or nickname was LeCabuc, and who was, moreover, an utter stranger to those who pretended to knowhim, was very drunk, or assumed the appearance of being so”.(Book 12, Ch 8)
It is thentold how he gets the other men around him drunk and then takes up the idea toget into a certain house from which they would have a good view of the wholestreet. When the porter of the house denies him access, Le Cabuc shoots him.For the death of this innocent citizen, Enjolras forces him to his knees, ordershim to think or pray, and executes him. He kicks the corpse aside, three men throwit over the barricade into the street, and that is the end of him.
BothClaquesous and Le Cabuc therefore, both have questionable names and even morequestionable conduct. It’s not up to us to make the connection between the twothough, Hugo does that himself, he ends the chapter with it:
“Let us sayat once that later on, after the action, when the bodies were taken to themorgue and searched, a police agent’s card was found on Le Cabuc. (…) We willadd, that if we are to believe a tradition of the police, which is strange butprobably well founded, Le Cabuc was Claquesous. The fact is, that dating fromthe death of Le Cabuc, there was no longer any question of Claquesous.Claquesous had nowhere left any trace of his disappearance; he would seem tohave amalgamated himself with the invisible. His life had been all shadows, hisend was night.”
After thisLe Cabuc is never mentioned again and Claquesous merely named as “having disappeared”in a summing up of all Patron-Minette’s associates.
Now, on tothe speculations! Why did Le Cabuc act the way he did and, more importantly forthis theory, why would Claquesous actlike that? It’s possible that Le Cabuc was just a rowdy, drunk, misguidedperson, but the police card on his body seems to imply something else.
After executingLe Cabuc, Enjolras proclaims that he has done this terrible thing because hehad to. He explains: “Assassination is even more of a crime here than elsewhere; we are underthe eyes of the Revolution, we are the priests of the Republic, we are thevictims of duty, and must not be possible to slander our combat.” If they areto fight for freedom they cannot be seen wilfully harming those they arefighting for.
Ifsomeone wanted to cause trouble among the revolutionaries, to turn the surroundingpublic against them perhaps, to stir them up into a chaotic riot instead of anorganised movement, they might well plant someone like Le Cabuc in their midst. And someone like Claquesous might very well take up an appearance like Le Cabuc’sto infiltrate a group like theirs.
Whywould Claquesous do this? Well…
“Thanks totheir ramifications, and to the network underlying their relations, Babet,Gueulemer, Claquesous, and Montparnasse were charged with the general enterpriseof the ambushes of the department of the Seine. The inventors of ideas of thatnature, men with nocturnal imaginations, applied to them to have their ideasexecuted.” (Book 7, Ch 4)
Now, this couldof course refer to other criminals, but…it’s just as likely that these “menwith nocturnal imaginations” are people in high places who want don’t want to gettheir hands dirty, but aren’t above ordering a little forced disappearance herand there. Something that becomes rather more tangible when Claquesous simply vanishes after Javet manages toarrest him:
“[O]ne ofthe principal prisoners, Claquesous, had been lost. It was not known how thishad been effected, the police agents and the sergeants ‘could not understand itat all.’ He had converted himself into vapor, he had slipped through thehandcuffs, he had trickled through the crevices of the carriage, the fiacre wascracked, and he had fled; all that they were able to say was, that on arrivingat the prison, there was no Claquesous. Either the fairies or the police hadhad a hand in it. Had Claquesous melted into the shadows like a snow-flake inwater? Had there been unavowed connivance of the police agents? Did this manbelong to the double enigma of order and disorder? Was he concentric withinfraction and repression? Had this sphinx his fore paws in crime and his hindpaws in authority? Javert did not accept such comminations, and would have bristledup against such compromises; but his squad included other inspectors besideshimself, who were more initiated than he, perhaps, although they were hissubordinates in the secrets of the Prefecture, and Claquesous had been such avillain that he might make a very good agent. It is an excellent thing forruffianism and an admirable thing for the police to be on such intimatejuggling terms with the night. These double-edged rascals do exist. Howeverthat may be, Claquesous had gone astray and was not found again.” (Book 2, Ch 2)
…ouch. (DidI need to use that entire quote in full? Not at all. But it’s my favourite, soof course I did.)
Ipersonally choose to see Le Cabuc as one of Claquesous’ personas, not as his ‘trueidentity’, but either way would work. Linked to all this, is also the possibilitythat Claquesous actually hides his face from his associates because he is infact a police informant, habitually ratting out his friends. But it seems morelikely to me that the whole of Patron-Minette will work for whomever offersthem enough to make it worth their while, and the fact that none of them haveever been caught has a little less to do with their own cleverness and morewith the fact that there are enough influential people around who do not want them to be caught.
Or, ofcourse, Claquesous really is connected to the fair folk. Which is a far morecharming notion and whenever I don’t want to be depressed about the mutualexploitation of political violence, that’s the one I’ll go with.

Wowhead full discography
It was about creating a distinct groove so arrangements came from weaving in and out of those linear grooves. The sequence/arpeggiator parts were all drum machine triggers that were played live. I’ve always seen rhythm at the core of what I do so I loved the layering of counter rhythms. I became very adept at pressing record then jumping onto equipment to play it – it was actually a very ‘live’ record in that sense. “I slept very little in those days,” he adds, continuing: “It was done on 8 track and very multi-tracked, so lots of recording, then bouncing, and overdubbing, to get the integrated feel of the tracks. “Pow Wow” was commissioned by the Fetish Records label, and recorded at the Cabs’ Western Works studio, where Mallinder would spend his days recording with Cabaret Voltaire, and continue on alone into night recording his debut solo material. There was a sense of new magik emerging.” We were just as interested in turning over rocks to see what lay beneath, as throwing them. There was acknowledgement of the importance of books, films, graphic art, and experimentation with all those mediums. Punk had championed a visceral, anti-intellectual approach but in truth the real characters brought so much more to the table, and what began to happen- from people like The Pop Group to Throbbing Gristle, and emerging scenes from No New York to Factory Records – is we began to embrace the art of it all. Much looser vibes were in the air and there was a much more exploratory feel. The primal caterwaul of punk was dying and lots of really significant things were emerging from the fires. “It was an interesting, and inspiring, time. Some words from Mr.Mallinder on the scene and era from which “Pow Wow” was born: This collection of mutant dub/funk/postpunk sounds just as fresh and contemporary in 2020 as it did in 1982 (note Autechre’s inclusion of standout cut “Del Sol” in a mix earlier this year), and highlights Mallinder’s crucial contributions to Cabaret Voltaire.
