A stands for AFFECTION: how would they show affection?

•Elijah, like all Mikaelsons, is very much a gift giver

•He loves to see you in all of the latest fashions, he’s always dressed to the nines so he believes his Queen should be too

•You we’re quite confused how he knew your sizes when he sent you a dress to wear before your first date but you brushed it off

•Once you live with him you have the biggest closet in the entire house, as well as an extra closet just for your shoes

B stands for BLOODY: how bloody are they willing to get for their object of obsession?

•Elijah doesn’t need to get bloody, even when their business was growing before they began hiring men to do their dirty work it was always Kol and Klaus who did it, Elijah was much more the face of the company dressed in Armani and Hugo Boss, the one on the covers of magazines and doing interviews for the company press

•If Elijah is getting bloody it is only because someone took it upon themselves to hurt either his family or his Queen, in any case he is happy to take his time and make them suffer, however he is never willing to allow you to see him in such a way so he ensures he cleans up before he comes home

C stands for CRUELTY: would they ever hurt their object of obsession?

•Elijah’s rage, while very real, isn’t quite as present as his brothers, he learned to control himself a long time ago and he doesn’t allow for bursts of aggression, especially not around you

•Physically he would never harm you, however he makes you very aware of how easily it would be to harm your family, the family you haven’t seen since you ‘moved in’ with him and that usually keeps you under control

•You and Elijah had a wonderful relationship, he had you under his control from the first date and you didn’t even know it

•He didn’t cross any kind of limit until 5 months into the relationship when you found out that you were pregnant (unless you call switching out your birth control a limit, then yes, he did)

E stands for EXPOSED: how much do they expose their own feelings to their object of obsession?

•Elijah makes it very clear how he feels for you after only a few dates and you are blown away by his dedication

•You assume a man who basically lives at the office doesn’t get the chance to date and fall in love every day so you take it in stride and try to be as understanding as possible, he enjoys how loving and sweet you are, never once making him feel bad for any kind of emotion or memory he talks to you about which only makes him more dependent on you in his life and more willing to share his thoughts and feelings

F stands for FIGHT: how would they react to their object of obsession fighting back?

•While he finds your attempts at escape slightly humorous that you believe you could get away, it is also extremely annoying

•He is patient but his go to method to compliance is tying you to the bed and making sure you need everything done for you until you’re desperate to get up, usually resulting in you behaving so that you can move as you begin to go stir-crazy

G stands for GAME: do they think this is just a game?

•This is not a game

•This is Elijah’s family, and everyone knows how seriously he takes that. You are his Queen, carrying his son in your body, he will never let any harm come to you as long as he is breathing

H stands for HELL: what would be their object of obsession’s worst experience with them?

•Your worst experience with Elijah was probably the moment you were forced to move into his home

•The look on his face terrified you and you tried to calm him down and get away but he had ahold of you the second you turned around, carrying you to your room and sitting you down as he packed your bags with everything you needed to keep, asking you about a few things he was unsure of but not talking beyond that

•On the drive to his home he was on the phone with your landlord buying you out of your lease and having someone come in and trash everything left in there that you ‘didn’t need’. •You are to be his Queen

•He proposes quickly after moving you in and you’re aware of the fact that you can’t really say ‘no’ wanting your child to have a father and as much as you hate to admit it at first, you know Elijah would be a wonderful father

•You’re married a few weeks later in a lovely ceremony in their backyard which is like getting married in a forest full of twinkle lights, he make it special with the help of his sister and both Klaus’ and Kol’s fiancées

J stands for JEALOUSY: how they react when jealous? Do they get jealous?

•Elijah only got jealous once

•He visited you at work one day and you had been contracted to photograph a few male models, it was a completely normal thing in big cities but Elijah didn’t like that answer, however he controlled himself

•He made sure, as you changed the lens on your camera, that the men knew they would never work again if they didn’t stop their flirting with you and though they weren’t the smartest men in the world, they were aware of how powerful and influential Elijah Mikaelson is

K stands for KINDNESS: how they act around their object of obsession?

•He is always well behaved and kind from the moment you walk into his office

•You we’re a photographer for one of the magazines that was doing a story on his families corporate company, sent to take pictures of him in his office for the article. He couldn’t help but think you looked like you belonged here as he had you sit behind his desk and teasingly took a few photos of you in the penthouse office with a backdrop of the skyline looking simply perfect

•People see him as a bachelor and a billionaire and while his personality isn’t very different from what he presents, people would never expect the reality of the company that is run under the company (even if that’s mostly run by Klaus)

N stands for NAUGHTY: how would they punish their object of obsession?

•Elijah would never physically harm you, especially since you’re carrying his child however you did try to escape a few days after he moved you into his home. You had been forced to stay there with security to watch you while he went to work and you had tried to sneak out while the guards thought you were in the shower

•You got to the corner of the street before you were carried back (as carefully as possible, none of the men wanting to risk Elijah’s anger)

•You we’re tied to the bed and that is where you stayed for the next 2 days, your new fiancée (according to the ring on your finger) tending to your every need which he actually enjoyed, getting to take care of you in every way until you assured him he didn’t have to worry about you getting away again

•He tried to make you understand how many people in the world would happily hurt you and his baby just to get at him or his family and you understood his urgency, you didn’t want anything to happen to your child either so you tried to do as you were told knowing escaping the house was impossible anyway

O stands for OPPRESSION: how many rights would they take from their object of obsession?

•You wouldn’t be able to work anymore however Elijah was willing to take you anywhere you want to go to photograph whatever made you happy which you found was almost better in a way, no one telling you what to do anymore, just photographing anything and everything that made you happy

•You only left the house in his presence but he did try to take you out a few times a week, though the life you had was completely gone the moment you admitted pregnancy and if you thought about it, it was completely gone the second you sat down in his office chair

P stands for PATIENCE: how patient are they with their object of obsession?

•Elijah is an extremely patient man

•He can wait for months or even years to get what he wants, especially from you

•He tries very hard to give you time to get accustomed to your new life, he wanted to ensure you were settled into it when his son was born

•Died: The only way that could happen was from someone with a grudge against his family coming after you and he would ensure that person and everyone they ever loved was slaughtered in the streets, as well as the security that let you die. It would become his obsession at the cost of all else

•Escaped: If you ever got farther than the driveway and somehow no one noticed until Elijah got home, every single man on their payroll would be looking for you, all of their security and all of the men that Klaus and Kol employ too and considering the type of people that work for his brothers (his name can’t be associated with men like that) let’s just say you wouldn’t be gone for very long

•You are the mother of his son, and if everything goes according to his plans, you would be the mother of several more children than that

•Elijah was even trying to convince Niklaus and Kol to give his children cousins to play with around the same age in the house, he thought it would give not just his girl but their girls as well reason to never try and run again

S stands for STIGMA: what made their yandere tendencies bloom?

•The moment he met you he was obsessed

•However the true moment he really became Yandere was when he came to pick you up for dinner and you were in your pajamas, wrapped in a soft blanket and eating ice cream, showing him a pregnancy test

•That was the moment Elijah had been waiting for, expecting for the last few months and the moment he put his plan into action of taking you home and making you truly his

T stands for TEARS: how would they react to their object of obsession crying/breaking?

•Elijah doesn’t want a ‘broken’ Queen, he just wants you to give in to your love for him and your new little family

•Crying however, he is on the ball for that one, Elijah expected tears as a pregnant women and he was prepared with tissues, your favorite ice cream and your favorite movies which made you cry harder as this man you wanted to hate so badly knew you better than anyone else in your life

U stands for UNIQUE: something different they would do compared to others yanderes.

•Something different about Elijah was the fact that he wanted you pregnant immediately

•You two began having sex on your second date, which was also planned, as he cooked you dinner himself in his home after clearing his brothers and staff out to ‘woo you’

•He realized however that that night was a waste when you were perfectly happy not using a condom since you were on birth control, his plan had been to pop a hole in the condom but this would change his plans a bit

•He surprised you at home the very next day with flowers and a teddy bear, happily telling you how much he had enjoyed your night together and how he wished you could have stayed over instead of gone home and once again you enjoyed a night together. He made a mental note of the birth control in your bathroom, what brand and the packaging, counting how far into it you were and coming back 2 days later, replacing it with nothing but sugar pills in a new package, changing them out every time you refilled the script

•Honestly it took longer to get you pregnant than he expected but by the time you noticed you were carrying his child you were 8 weeks along, Elijah being thankful he had been giving you vitamins in the food he made you when he realized how far along you were

V stands for VICE: what weakness their object of obsession could use against them?

•You realize quite quickly that Elijah will do anything for you if it’s good for the baby

•You know you will never get away from him and of all people, Elijah will not be the one to lose sight of you in public, but you are able to go outside and enjoy not being cooped up constantly as you read the baby books Elijah had gotten and proved to him that pregnant women need fresh air and sunlight

•After that conversation you actually convinced the eldest Mikaelson to make you a sunroom. It was built in the back yard of the house shockingly quickly and it became your happy place and a place Elijah felt safe leaving you alone as there was only one exit. It was completely glass and had a few couches and plants all over with a bookshelf filled with the books on your list that you had made for him to get you and your husband even put some butterflies in there to make you smile

•He bought a bigger couch than the first one he put in there upon realizing you were going to nap in there and also filled it with some blankets and pillows when you proved to love being in there when it rained, inviting him to join you for a storm once so that he could understand the peace that came with it and it was truly lovely

•The outside building became a place not just for you but for Klaus and Kol’s wives too who you bonded with fairly quickly and whether you considered it trauma bonding or not it wouldn’t matter, they could lean on each other and speak freely in there together which is something they all sorely needed

W stands for WIT’S END: would they hurt their object of obsession?

•Elijah would never hurt his Queen

•He had never hurt you physically and he never would apart from the sore wrists you had from being tied to the bed with him waiting on you hand and foot which made him quickly switch to silk bindings

X stands for XOANON: would they worship their object of obsession?

•Elijah loves every inch of you, he worships the ground his Queen walks on from the moment you met

•It somehow becomes more intense when you find yourself pregnant and continues to be every time you are pregnant with one of his babies

Y stands for YEARN: how long would they pine after their object of obsession before they snap?

•He was switching your birth control on your second night together so fairly quickly though he doesn’t take you until you’re pregnant several months later

Z stands for ZENITH: would they ever break their object of obsession?

•You eventually do give in to what your husband wants, it is towards the end of your first pregnancy especially since you know there will be more pregnancies

•You love your son from the first moment you found out you were pregnant and you hated suggesting going to a clinic to get rid of him, something you later admit to your husband that you only did because you were afraid he would abandon you, pregnant and probably without a job if you pissed the powerful man off, Elijah felt very relieved by that admission and you knew it

•You love Elijah, you had loved him since your third date and you knew that wouldn’t just go away, especially as the father of your child and soon to be children, giving into him especially for your babies, wanting your eventual 3 sons and daughter to grow up in a functional family unlike the one you had grown up in

•You we’re determined that your children would grow up in a family full of love, surrounded by their siblings and cousins, loving aunts and uncles, and a mother and father who loved not just them but each other because that makes all the difference

also curious: who is this mysterious Walton????? I think I’ve never come across that translation! Do you know where I can find a copy? 👁️

Ah yes, perhaps I should've clarified because it's more obscure! I'm still collecting information about it, but Walton is William Walton one of the four translators in an 1890s edition made for a Collected Works.

From what I've been able to find, the earliest printing of this translation's from an 1892 edition of Hugo's works; links to this printing were gathered up by @melannen here. It was also reprinted c. 1894 in a 28-volume set of all Hugo's novels, a couple of which are available on the Internet Archive (my beloved) or Google Books.

The four translators were split up over five volumes; William Walton translated Fantine, J. C. Beckwith translated Cosette, Jules Gray translated Marius and Jean Valjean, and Edouard Jolivet translated Plumet/Saint-Denis.

I'm still researching this translation, because it doesn't seem to be widely-known. All I can really tell you about them is that neither William Walton and J.C. Beckwith should be confused with the composers for the organ of the same name (seriously, what an odd coinkydink). I've also found a portrait of a J. C. Beckwith (this one a John Carroll), by Sargent, and it's not a super common name so there's a possibility it's him, but also this J. C. Beckwith appears to have been an artist and there's no solid evidence of it being the same J. C. Beckwith other than the name and being alive in this time period.

hiii!! ive been following for a bit and i was wondering if you have any book recommendations for someone trying to get into more historical literature? tysm if you answer <3 im an eng/ger speaker if that helps at all :)

Hello! ‘Historical literature’ is very wide so the first step I’d recommend is to find what interests you exactly and start from there :D

I tragically don’t read that much and have a tendency to, ah, latch onto specific writers, so if I enjoy someone’s writing style, I’ll read their entire bibliography (as was the case with Mickiewicz, Sienkiewicz, Victor Hugo, Dumas, Mary Shelley, Tolkien - including his translations of older texts/legends, and Shakespeare and Marlowe - but as you can see from this spread, it’s all the kind of writers I learnt about in early education)

In the past, I was instead latching onto specific subjects, so I’ve read a lot of medieval Arthurian texts (including things like, Taliesin’s 6th c. poems because they happened to mention Uther), so it’s rather unhelpful when it comes to recommending : D

I also like theatre in general so being in touch with older fiction comes kinda naturally with it; even something like Aristophanes’s Frogs is performed to this day haha

And of course thorough my entire life I was always interested in lgbtq lit — if this is the subject that interests you, since you’re a German speaker, may I recommend Bibliothek rosa Winkel? It’s a truly great resource

'The burning library: Benjamin, Hugo, and the critique of violence'

But in French, ‘Les amis de l’A B C’ is a homonym for ‘the friends of the abased,’ l’abaissé: ‘The abased – that is the people. They wanted to raise them up […]’

L’abaissé may also be translated as the ‘abject’ or the ��wretched’; in other words, it is a synonym for Les Misérables, as if the very title of Hugo’s most famous work encrypted a riddling reference to the alphabet.

‘Les amis de L’A B C’ testifies […] to benign liberal humanism (a campaign for literacy) and revolutionary struggle (a fight for the abased) and in doing so it also testifies to the violence of inscription in which both projects articulate themselves as if they were one and the same. Notably, the law cannot read the revolution that reveals itself in the punning contingencies of the letter […] the police do not know how to read – which is why the conspirators of Les Misérables are never arrested […]

Puns are serious in politics because the violence of the letter ensures that the canons of meaning necessary to sustain law cannot even sustain themselves.”

I.e. The usage of puns is to expose the inconsistencies in laws and political systems.

Wings

Chapter 1

The night ended with kicking the last of the drunks out of the bar.

Hugo ran a hand through his hair, cleaning off his glasses.

“You okay?” Lance, the other bartender he was working with tonight, asked while cleaning the bar up.

“Yeah just a busy night.” Hugo smiled a bit, though he couldn’t help the exhaustion in his bones. Not that it was any different than usual.

“…why don’t you go home early?” Lance suggested. “I’ll talk to the owner. You look like you could really use some rest.”

Hugo wasn’t about to argue with an early end time. So he nodded. “That sounds good.”

Lance nodded and a couple minutes later, Hugo had climbed into his car which was frozen inside. He rubbed his already jacketed arms as he blasted the heat and turned the seat warmer all the way up.

He breathed a sigh of relief when the cold let up.

Then, he started his way home. Luckily home wasn’t far from the bar. 15 minutes at the most. The roads were icy, so he took his time.

He wrapped his coat tighter around himself as he got into the front door. At least the house was warm.

The first thing he saw, however was the sticky note on the fridge.

‘Emergency business trip. You know how it is. Hold down the fort until we get back.’-C + D

Donella and Cyrus were gone on some random business trip that they forgot to tell him about beforehand.

Again.

Though he hated being alone in the house by himself. Especially when it was freezing out. Looking at thermometer, it was below freezing. It was snowing though.

He sighed, and started a fire in the fireplace.

He turned on the television, frowning softly as he watched the random sitcom that came on as he heated up his dinner in the microwave.

He was exhausted. But he just got home. He didn’t want to go to sleep just yet. He popped his back.

Something made his hair stand up on end. He looked around. Nothing was out of place.

Donella had taught him to always trust his instincts. Something was going to happen.

So Hugo prepared himself. He grabbed his bat from his room, and kept it by his side as he ate.

The crash outside made Hugo jump out of his skin. He looked around wildly, gripping his bat, before everything went quiet again.

It sounded like it came from the backyard.

Hugo slipped his jacket on, and went to investigate.

Of all the things he could have expected, this was not one of them.

Laying in a pocket of snow, was a boy. Only, he had huge black wings. One of them looked really badly injured. The boy was hardly breathing. The only reason Hugo knew he was, was cause of the fog from his breath.

“Holy shit…” Hugo mumbled to himself. He put the bat down, going over to the boy. He turned him over. He was ice cold, shivering up a storm. “Shit…” He thought for a moment, then groaned to himself. “I’m going to regret this.”

He carefully picked the winged boy up, careful of the injured one, and brought him inside.

The boys lips were blue. He was hypothermic. That wasn’t good. He searched on his phone what to do.

A couple of the steps were ones he couldn’t take. Like calling the police. Who knows what would happen if he called them.

Still, he took the advice and pulled off the wet clothes, replacing them with his old, spare dry clothes. Then he wrapped the boy, and his wings in blankets. He added a few hand warmers to the wings wrapped in towels as well.

The boy gradually stopped shivering, and looked a lot more content now. Hugo took this opportunity to look at the boys wing.

It was badly broken, but not beyond repair.

Nuru was a vet. Maybe she could help. How to explain this though?

He picked up his phone. “Nuru, I have a bit of an emergency. It’s a bit hard to explain but could you come to my house?”

The text came in two minutes later. “Hugo, it’s 4 in the morning.”

“Its an emergency. A…non human emergency.”

“…..On my way.”

Hugo breathed a sigh of relief. The boy groaned, eyes opening a bit. Hugo could see how glazed over they were though. He was clearly out of it.

“Whemmm?” He slurred. He winced in pain, looking up to his wing. “Huuurttts….”

Hugo came over. “Youre safe. I’m taking care of you.”

“pretty….” The boys eyes rolled back in hiss head and he passed back out.

He blushed lightly, before he heard a knock at the door. How did Nuru get here this fast?

Still, he looked through the peephole and saw her, opening the door as she adjusted a medical bag on her shoulder.

“Whats going on?”

Hugo didn’t say anything, instead leading her to the living room. She gasped at the sight of the unconscious boy.

“Holy…shit.” She mumbled.

“That’s what I meant when I said non human…can you help?”

Nuru smirked at him. “Aw Hugo. You do care about something other than yourself.’

“Nuru.”

“Im kidding. Yes I can. He doesn’t have hypothermia right?”

“Not anymore. I think it passed a bit ago.

She nodded, setting out her tools and started the process of setting the wing right. She was gentle and careful and save for a few mumbles and groans, the boy didn’t seem to notice her working.

“Where did you find him?” Nuru asked.

“He crashed in my backyard…but it was below freezing so I don’t know how he was flying in the first place.”

Nuru sighed softly. “We cant tell anyone else about this.”

“I figured.”

“not even Cyrus and Donella.”

“Oh they were the first on the list not to tell. I love them but they’d turn him over to the highest bidder in an instant.”

Nuru sighed. “Youre lucky they’re not here…has he said anything?”

Hugo nodded and went over to the boy, gently fixing the blankets.

“Only slurred speech. He was really out of it before passing back out.”

“We need to keep an eye on him, make sure he didn’t loose a lot of blood or has bad hypothermia.”

“Does that mean you’re staying?” Hugo hated how hopeful that sounded. Nuru, however, was already in the spare closet, grabbing pillows and blankets. She threw a blanket at Hugo.

“Get some rest. You’ve been up all night.”

Hugo chuckled softly, and took her advice. After a minute the two of them were curled up on the floor in a blanket nest.

Varian groaned. Everything was heavy. But he was warm. His wing hurt, but it felt like it was wrapped in something.

He cracked open his eyes.

The pink of the sun rising hit him first. The second thing he realized was he was in a strange home. The third was that there was a nest of blankets on the ground, and two people sleeping inside it.

Where was he?

He tried to get up, only to realize the heaviness he was feeling, was a bunch of blankets wrapped around him.

Huh.

He slowly untangled himself, laying up. His good wing felt sore as he stood up, but he could at least tuck that one into his side. The other one seemed to be held open with medical equipment.

At the movement, the blonde stirred, mumbling. Varians heart rate spiked. He didn’t trust them.

He took a deep breath, and headed towards the door.

He was almost at the door when,

“Hey. You’re awake?” A sleepy voice called out.

He turned, good wing fluttering in an attempt to escape. The other one wouldn’t move with the wrappings.

The blonde, with glasses askew and hair everywhere, was laying there, clearly half awake. He was blinking at him.

“I uh-Um-I.” Varian couldn’t stop himself from stuttering.

“You know its freezing out there, right? It’s like…the dead of winter.”

Varian paused, looking out the window. It looked frigid.

“…Who are you?” He asked.

The boy yawned. “Hugo…you crashed in my backyard…three hours ago? What time is it?”

Varian tensed as the blonde stood up, going over to a clock above a stove. It was 7:30.

“Goddamn…” the blonde mumbled. Varians hand was on the doorknob.

“Hey, you okay, feathers? You look like you’re ready to run for the hills.”

“What do you want with me?”

The other boy blinked. “Nothing.”

Varian didn’t trust that answer. Everyone always wanted something with him. Usually his wings, sometimes worse. The blonde could clearly see that on Varians face though.

“What was I supposed to do? You crashed into my goddamn backyard and almost died from hypothermia?”

Ah. That would explain the broken wing. And all the blankets. Still, he narrowed his eyes.

“Did you want me to let you die?” The boy asked.

“….N-No…”

“then you’re fucking welcome.”

Varian looked the boy up and down. He looked honest enough. And he was right, if he went outside now he’d freeze. Varian sighed softly, letting go of the door. “fine. Just don’t try anything.”

“wasn’t going to…I’m going to make some coffee. Want some?”

“What’s…what’s coffee?”

Hugo’s eyes lit up. “oh feathers, you are in for a treat.”

Varian walked closer to Hugo as he started pulling out ingredients. Varian frowned. Something could be a drug or sleeping agent. Hugo noticed him looking, and thought for a second.

“Did you want to look at the ingredients and smell them before I put them in?”

Varian thought for a second, then nodded softly. Hugo handed him a bag of beans. He looked at them “coffee beans”, they smelled good, actually. He handed them back to Hugo. Hugo smiled and put them into the machine. That was something Varian was curious about. He didn’t dare ask about it though.

The same thing happened with the sugar, cream, and some other ingredients Hugo had.

“Alright. Now we gotta grind up the beans. It’s going to be loud.”

Varian took the hint and covered his ears. Hugo was right. It was loud. It only lasted a minute though.

“is that coffee I hear?” A girls voice called out. Varian tensed up again. He’d forgotten there was another person here. She came into the kitchen, and sat in the next seat. She then looked at Varian. “Hey. Good to see you’re awake.”

Varian nodded nervously. She looked at him concerned.

“Feathers is a bit skittish, Nuru. He looked like he was about to run out the door a second ago.”

Nuru chuckled softly.

“W-Why do you keep calling me Feathers?”

Hugo looked over. “Cause of your wings. That and I don’t know your actual name. I figured you’d tell me later though.”

Varians wings ruffled a bit. Nuru looked intrigued.

“How is your wing feeling?” She asked.

“…sore and hurting…” He mumbled.

Nuru nodded as Hugo put a cup of coffee in front of her.

“Any particular way you want your coffee?” Hugo asked. Varian shook his head shyly. Hugo grinned. “I’m going to make you the best cup of coffee ever.”

Nuru chuckled as Hugo went and grabbed some things from the upper shelf. He handed them to Varian to look over. After Varian was satisfied, Hugo made him coffee, handing it to him in a cup that had the moon phases on it.

Varian took a moment, then slowly took a sip. “…oh my god this is delicious.” He said after a moment. Hugo grinned while Nuru giggled.

“Leave it to Hugo to make you a coffee drinker.”

Varian blushed. The coffee was warm and he really liked it. There was hazelnut in it. Varian approved it but he was surprised at how good it tasted in the coffee.

“So now that we’re all awake…” Hugo started, sipping his own coffee. Varian looked over. “What were you doing out in the dead of night, anyway?”

Varian swallowed hard. “I…I was running….flying away from some people.”

“Are they the ones who did that to your wing?” Nuru asked.

Varian nodded. “Its why I crashed….sorry about that.”

Hugo raised an eyebrow. “You were attacked and you’re apologizing?”

“I never said-“

“Context clues, feathers. Who were they?”

Varian looked down at his drink, going quiet. Nuru put a hand on his shoulder.

“you don’t have to tell us now. How about, we start with your real name?”

Varian smiled a bit. “….It’s Varian…”

“Nice to meet you Varian.” Nuru smiled.

Varian felt some of the tenseness go out of his shoulders. These two were nice. Genuinely so. He wouldn’t let his guard down, not completely, but he was willing to let them in a tad considering Hugo had just made coffee for him and went out of his way to make him feel comfortable. And Nuru, if he had to guess. She was the one who splinted his wing.

“So, angel...” Hugo started, grinning. Varian blushed deeply.

“Hugo!” Nuru chided.

“What I’m teasing!” Hugo huffed. “I was just going to ask if it hurt when he fell from heaven!”

Varian choked on his drink, going red to the tips of his ears.

“That’s the cheesiest pick up line.” Nuru said.

Hugo giggled when he saw Varians face. “I don’t know, I think he liked it. And I think it’s appropriate.”

Varian giggled. Hugo smiled proudly.

“We shouldn’t be making jokes about this.” Nuru said, though Varian could see the corners of her mouth turning up, trying to contain her giggles.

Hugo grinned, and then winked at Varian, who hid his face behind his good wing.

“Oh that’s so cute.” Hugo said.

“Stop!” Varian said though giggles. He didn’t want either of them to see just how red his face was.

Hugo chuckled. “okay, okay.”

The three of them calmed down and Varian slowly pulled down his wing. Hugo was smiling like he just won a prize. Varian liked it. It was cute.

Varian pushed that thought out of his head. He couldn’t be getting caught up in that. Nuru took a deep breath.

“Alright boys, move out of the way. I’m making breakfast.”

Hugo raised an eyebrow. “Uh, Ru, last time you “made breakfast” you nearly burnt down your apartment.”

“That, was last week. Besides, now I have you two to keep me from setting things on fire.”

Varian and Hugo looked at each other nervously.

A half in hour later, they were turning off the smoke alarm. The smoke hadn’t been that bad, thankfully, but the windows had to be opened. No one was happy about that.

Varian shivered. Nuru ran and grabbed him a blanket, wrapping it around him.

“Thanks…” Varian muttered. Nuru just nodded.

“I’ll make breakfast this time.” Hugo said with a huff.

Nuru laughed nervously. “Sorry Hue.”

Hugo sighed softly, but it wasn’t without a small smile at the girls antics.

The hairs on the back of Hugos neck stood up. Someone was watching them. He looked around, then outside.

“Hugo?” Varian questioned.

Hugo frowned, then looked at Varian. “Sorry, angel…sometimes I get these feelings. I feel like we’re being watched right now.”

Nuru looked nervous at that.

Hugo, however, took a deep breath, looking at Varian who looked pale as a ghost.

Just then, the doorbell rang.
