Warner Brothers would absolutely not be remaking Harry Potter as a prestige television series if it wasn't for the persistent popularity of the Marauders fandom.

Sure, companies dip back into IP all the time, but Harry Potter has had mixed success over the past ten years: popular video game, disastrous Fantastic Beasts movies, pandemic-successful stage show -- this isn't a sure bet, particularly if you're hoping to capture new fans, not just feed aging millennials.

Luckily for the bottom line, there is a thriving Harry Potter adjacent fandom, one that's only ballooned in popularity as the books proper have receded from popular culture. Studios often do algorithmic calculations to estimate popularity/risk/audience and oh boy, do young people fucking love Marauder shit. It's bled into BookTok, back into the related dark academia subculture (which Harry Potter arguably helped create in the first place); it pulls in fans who aren't familiar with the books, who instead consider specific fanworks canonical. They love the setting; anything to enrich the locale where Remus and James and Snape and Lily and Peter and Sirius have adventures. What better way to monetize that interest than stretching each book into a ten episode season of prestige television? If J.K. Rowling's creative control didn't expressly forbid anything beyond straight adaptation of the book, I'm sure WB would be developing a prequel as we speak.

J.K. Rowling is, of course, an executive producer, and WB's creative team has signaled that they will be working with her closely.

I truly think this is the most significant negative impact of a single fandom on the real world since The Last Jedi wars radicalized a generation of young men. We're looking at a potential total revitalization of Rowling in popular culture, unfathomable amounts of money in her pocket, complete creative control and publicity, associated bumps for the Harry Potter theme park, all of it.

Many people in the fandom understand that they're walking a line by engaging with Harry Potter at all, to such an extent that it's good form to make a point of not buying Harry Potter merch. That drives me a little bit crazy. Okay, you've repudiated the desire to own a Hufflepuff Scarf. In this age of studios watching fandoms, of total breakdown of the creator/audience divide, does that really matter? You've withheld your purchasing power, but kept the IP thriving.

And the thing that gets me is that Marauders fandom is so barely Harry Potter, so tangentially related, that they could have taken their flanderized headcanons and written their own books, or applied them to literally any other boarding school setting! There are maybe four chapters that cover the young lives of Harry Potter's Dad's Friends, and in all of them the characters are lightly sketched at best. No one would even accuse you of plagiarism for taking these characters and doing something else with them, they're essentially walk-on roles. Instead we have an active and growing fandom, where Sirus/Remus moved from being the eighth most popular ship on Ao3 to the SECOND, in the space of a single year. That's with no new books, new movies, no external bump of any kind from the IP.

And okay, sure, did this fandom sign a check to J.K. Rowling? No, that would be Casey Bloys and the rest of the clowns at HBO. But at this point, aren't we splitting hairs?

Like sorry, if I have to hear about the revolutionary queer power of pure, old-school fandom as something that exists without financial incentive, a community that can cause real and tangible changes in the media that gets produced, then you have to allow that those real and tangible changes can be for the worse.

Requesting for the fandoms Harry Potter, Avatar (The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra), The Arrow, The Umbrella Academy, Outer Banks, Percy Jackson, Star Wars, and MCU.

So, my name is Rebecca, I'm a 19-year-old female, and I go by she/they pronouns. I start a lot of projects but have difficulty finishing most of them, which is due to my ADHD. I get so many good ideas that I want to do, but never really complete them (I procrastinate on/push them) as soon as I start them.

I'm more of a dog person rather than a cat person. Though I love cats, I own seven Chihuahuas. One of my friends says I have golden retrieved energy, and another sends me Instagram reels about clumsy orange cats, because that's me too.

(Also, my main Patronus I get on The Wizarding World is a Tonkenise cat.)

Physically, I'm a 159cm / 5'2, kind of chubby girl with breast-length-ish straight blonde hair and green eyes (they're actually a mix of green, blue, gray, and brown).

My favorite color is pink, and people know me as "The Pink Lady". I usually dress in that color, however, now that I have started "university" (yrkeshögskola in Swedish— my native language), I've begun wearing other colors (I usually color-match, I can't wear too many colors or colors that don't blend together) just to seem a bit more "adult-y" since I am the second youngest in my class (there's another 19-yeard-old, I'm just a few months older than her).

I study TV-productionspecialist in "university," but I don't know what I want to do for work when I graduate "university"...

😊 What are your oc's career/general life desires? what do they want to get the most out of life?

Love, safety and peace. She wants to love and be loved, she wants to help people around the galaxy, she wants to protect those who can't protect themselves, she wants justice and freedom. But she also wants to not worry about anything sometimes, sometimes she'd like to have an ordinary life. Maybe to retire, maybe to have kids someday but it's wayyyy too far into the future. I'd say in the current days, 7.5 or so, she's happy of where she is in her journey and wouldn't change anything :)

🤍 What are three of your oc's neutral/questionable traits?

1. She doesn't actively avoid conflict. The average Jedi would force trick their opponents to avoid conflict, Mave prefers honesty even if it means there's gonna be a fight. She rather understand her enemy and fight her enemy for what they are, for what they stand for. This is extremely unconventional for a Jedi but this is what gained her so many different allies too. That's why in the JK storyline, she accepted to duel Praven instead of force tricking him.

2. She respects beliefs she doesn't necessarily understand/believe in. For exemple, there's a mission where the Jedi Council asks you to convince the Voss to let go some Sith relics because it could "turn" them to the dark side but Maverik'a has so much trust and respect in their culture that she lets them keep them (even Kira was shocked by that decision in-game). Or in Ruhnuk when that guy is cheating to make Heta stronger, Mave could've "helped" Shae but she doesn't out of respect to the Mandalorian culture (to make the fight fair).

3. She likes to fight. It's kinda contradictory because she really doesn't like violence, war, suffering but she does love the art behind lightsaber combat. As a Padawan, she always fought without real consequences, as she was learning and practicing to become a Jedi. It used to be something fun for her, so you could say that early on as a Knight she secretly enjoyed fighting enemies 🫣 but then things changed because of the war. Wielding a lightsaber is quite bittersweet now.

💭 What is your oc's MBTI, enneagram, and/or other personality aspects (if known/interested in)?

She's Good Neutral, Hufflepuff and I actually never did the MBTI test for her before and she is.. ENFJ-A! It's almost scary how spot on this is, it's literally her!

BIOGRAPHY

before hiraeth, angelie had no idea her life would be anything but normal. the eldest of two girls, she was born in small-town dahlonega, georgia ( population: 6,437 ) to a baker and a florist. her tiny house barely fit the four of them, and everything she owned eventually went to hand-me-downs for her little sister. even as a small child, she never envisioned wanting anything else. unfortunately, fate had other plans in store. on her sixth birthday, her parent packed up the family to take them on a summer vacation to the lake. the memories are blurry, and now all she can remember is something in the middle of the road, her mother swerving, and their vehicle submerging. she doesn’t remember being shoved out of the car, or how she’d made it to shore or right next to an entrance to hiraeth. she only remembers waking in an unfamiliar place, a kind doctor assuring her that she was safe, explaining as softly as one can to a six-year-old that she was the only one. the same physician (doctor kaye) ended up adopting angelie, enrolling her into the academy and raising her with her wife and two other children (one biological, one also adopted). after graduation, angelie chose virtue, feeling as though she owed the faction and the kayes her life. despite being a ‘visitor’ on all of her records, angelie knows very little outside of hiraeth. she’s never once returned, and is secretly terrified at the very idea. angelie now has made little life for herself here, working at the vintage-style diner, falling a little bit in love with everyone she meets, and spending far too much time attempting to be a little too involved in her family and friends’ lives. what, a girl can’t do a little matchmaking? she’d never dare set anyone up with those dangerous and dastardly vices!

This is the Buddy for February 26th. It's a Harry Potter thing. I'm a Hufflepuff.

I'll be honest, I never finished the Harry Potter series. I did start reading the last book (the deathly hallows one) but for some reason or another, I didn't finish it. I only know the end thanks to reading spoilers online.

Same thing happened with Star Wars, too - I watched the first part of Return of the Jedi at my grandparents' house one day, and didn't see the end of the story until a few years ago. One of those weird nerd things, I guess. People do think the last movie of the trilogy's the worst, anyway.

The one thing about Harry Potter people are into is the four houses aspects. It's fun to pick a house and have this sort of kinship with other people who share your choice, and to be able to tell people abut yourself through this common pop culture branding.

The four houses are kind of based on the four humors of ancient greek medicine, as popularized in obnoxious detail by Ben Johnson.

Gryffindor is Sanguine - they're sporty, brave and "good at everything" - and of course, the type of people who only exist in fiction, or in the minds of people who think real life works like fiction, and see themselves as heroes. But all attempts at mapping personalities usually has a "good guy" personality just in case.

Slytherin is Choleric - evil. Technically, bitter and angry, which does describe Draco Malfoy. And evil people in general are usually angry, right. Cholera, of course, is yellow bile. Have you ever noticed that, when you're angry, you feel heartburn? That's the bile rising. In Japan, there's even the idea that when someone is really angry, they need to throw up.

Ravenclaw is Phlegmatic - Nerds, pretty much. If all the brainiest students go to Ravenclaw, how come they don't win every house cup? Though the idea that intelligence is an innate personality trait is pretty unintelligent in itself. Phlegm, as we know, is snot. Nerds are always sniffling and complaining about allergies, right?

Hufflepuff is Melancholy - basically "the rest" of the personality group, for people who aren't strong, smart or angry enough for the other three. Melancholy is the worst of the personalities, the opposite of sanguine, having neither the intelligence of Phlegmatic nor the strength of Choleric. Melancholy is the black bile, which totally exists, and comes from the spleen. What else would the spleen do?

So, basically, Sanguine/Gryffindors are strong and smart, Choleric/Slytherins are strong and dumb, Phelgmatic/Ravenclaws are weak and smart, and Melancholy/Hufflepuffs are weak and dumb.

People choose their Hogwarts houses based on their personality, or rather, the personality they wish they had. Choosing Gryffindor means they have a hero complex, or see themselves as brave. Good thing they've never been in an actual emergency situation to see how they'd do, right? Slytherin is the edgelord house. They act like they're above simplistic morality and "know only the strong survive". Ironically, many Slytherin characters were born rich. Ravenclaws are proud of their nerdiness. That often just means reading a lot or being good at math, though. Not so much the scientific humility aspect of nerdiness. And Hufflepuffs are the ones who claim to reject the whole idea of the house system and take pride on being part of the "loser house", since it means they're refusing to put themselves in a box.

Makes sense that I'm a Hufflepuff now, right?

For me at lest, it comes down to the Harry Potter adults in question not understanding the difference in how they presive the Houses with how their (presumably more causally Harry Pitter enjoying) friends did. Like, I was a Harry Potter kid along time ago, I I eventually got to the point in the (largely extra-textual) world building that said Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw were cool too, and there was more to Slytherin then them being evil.

So as I see it, if you’re not a big fan and you’ve just seen some of the movies, the Harry Potter Houses are Hero, Villian, Nerd, Other People. I read it less as “the guests were mad it was Harry Potter themed”, they all problems knew that was this couple’s deal before hand, but rather “the guest’s very different understanding of Harry Potter lead to a very different experience then what the couple envisioned”.

Don’t think there’s anything wrong with having themed parties, I just think that this particular instance the couple planning it failed to take into account how a casual fan might see things compaired to a hard core fan. Like, if I were to have a Star Wars party where I grouped people into Jedi and Sith based on who was more stoic and who was more passionate, I would rightly have a lot of guests annoyed at me that I put them with the space facists. A more extreme example there, but I think it get’s the point across.

Granted, it is very likely that a lot of the gawking that happens about this particular post is about “look at these losers having INTERESTS and THEMED PARTIES”.

Star Wars in a Harry Potter AU

Anakin Skywalker, the one chosen to end the Sith (dark wizards under the orders of the dark wizard known as Darth Sidious), does not look much like what the Jedis (peacemaker wizards in charge of Hogwarts his own department in the ministry) imagined that he would be.

Qui Gon Jinn was the one who found him in a desert known as Tatooine as a slave to a strange being known as Jabba the Hutt. When he found him, the boy knew nothing of magic (although he knew that Jabba his former master Gardulla couldn't be humans, but they were something that was always there, so there was no reason to overthink it), but he was still of the right age to adapt before going to Hogwarts, so Qui Gon kept it a secret for a few years. When he turned 11, he was brought to the castle by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui Gon's former protégé and teacher of the history of magic.

All those who knew that he was the chosen one assumed that he would be sorted into Gryffindor (they even thought of skipping the ceremony directly), since all the great heroes of the wizarding world had come from that house.

His first mistake was expecting the young Skywalkwer to be like the rest of the heroes. He didn't have the sorting hat on for more than a minute, when he gasped (he didn't want the damn hat; he was ready for that result).

HUFFLEPUFF!!

Principal Palpatine looked horrified, Obi-Wan looked puzzled, Mace Windu looked like he was about to have an aneurysm, Yoda looked interested, and Plo Koon just seemed happy to have such an important addition to his household, Quinlan Vos, and Qui-Gon Jinn. They seemed pleased with the surrounding chaos.

Throughout each year, Anakin commits the Unforgivable Spells.

He first uses the cruciatus curse against his mother's murderers.

He then uses the Imperius Curse on The Son and The Daughter (in an attempt by the father to bring him closer to magic neutrality).

End up using the Killing Curse against Count Dooku.

ludo doesn't have much money left, either, so he's quick to think of something that might help them out for free. "sure, on me. come on then," he nods, leading remus towards the three broomsticks. "hold on," ludo stops right outside the pub, patting remus on the chest. "you wait here," he nods, "and when i say so, run." without giving remus a chance to reply, the young hufflepuff makes his way into the pub and is relieved to see the large crowd had gotten larger - it would make this easier. it's nearly impossible to get the attention of somebody at the bar, and the young jedi waits for the perfect moment before he sneaks behind the bar table as best he can without being noticed. most people's attention is on the two poor overwhelmed wizards trying their best to prepare everybody's drink, even with the enchantments. ludo wraps his fingers around the neck of a bottle of something - he hopes its gin - before pulling it clumsily out of the shelf. a series if cracks can be heard as the bottle clangs against the glass of the surrounding bottles, and before ludo knows it the entire shelf is coming down and sending bottles to the ground.

still grasping his surprisingly in tact bottle, ludo makes a mad dash as heads turn towards the sound, almost slipping on the spilled liquor as he makes his way out of the pub towards remus. "run!" he shouts, and he can hear the cursing of the bar keep behind them as they make a run for it and don't stop until they get to the edge of the woods leading out of the village. when they catch their breath, ludo looks down at the bottle and see's he's grabbed a bottle of brandy. "alright," he nods, "not too shabby. cheers," he grins, popping the bottle open and taking a sip from it before offering it to remus.

Chewbacca, he chuckled at the comment. He knew that Ludo was referring to his current outfit, all brown and a little fluffy, but Remus couldn't help but connect it to the fact that once a month he turned into a furry monster. "Ah, don't worry about it. Being friends with Sirius, James and Pete, you learn to handle a good hit every now and again." He replied with a smile, head nodding at his next question. "I'd love a gin." Remus said, sticking a hand in his pocket to see if he had any change. Realizing there were only a couple of knuts in his pocket, he began backtracking slightly. "On you? Since you did smack me with your lightsaber, I think you owe me one."
