How shingles are made
Ever wonder how shingles are made? You know, the things on top of your roof that protect your home. We all have them, but we certainly don’t think about them much. Roofing shingles come in a variety of materials and have been redesigned and developed over the years. Getting the proper shingle system for your weather and house design is important in protecting your home and assets from the elements.
Wood Shingles are often from red cedar or pine. Modern shingles have to be treated with chemicals in order for the wood to hold up. However, the most common in the United States today are Asphalt Shingles. These shingles started out as paper dipped in tar. They are popular to their cost, longevity, ease of installation and low maintenance.
youtube
Asphalt Roofing History
Tar, which is the binder in the asphalt shingle has been used for 1000’s of years. It was used to waterproof the liners of canals and between bricks. By the 1950s the asphalt shingle looked very much like it does today. The roof liner started out as organic felt but finding a non-organic material was a must to help with fire prevention and weight issues. Asbestos was a material that was found to work well, however, later it was discovered that it poses serious health issues. Today we use a fiberglass mat is used as the base material for the shingles. Fiberglass is perfect material as it is fire resistant and very rugged to the elements.
Another term for Asphalt shingles is composite shingles. The foundation base of the shingle is made up of either wood and paper or fiberglass. Fiberglass is preferred as it is fire resistant but also lighter weight. This mat is then covered in tar which is from naturally occurring deposits or a byproduct of crude oil refining. Once the foundation is coated, fly ash or finely ground limestone is added. This material acts as a stabilizer and makes the shingles more durable and fire resistant.
Adding an Attractive Shingle Finish
Once the shingles are through that process, ceramic coated mineral granules are added to the top. These can be in a variety of colors and help with UV protection from the sun. This further increases the shingles fire-resistant power as well as adding an attractive finish. Shingles that are used in places of high humidity may have a bit of copper added to them to help stop the growth of algae. The back of the shingles is coated in some talc or sand to keep the shingles from completely sticking together. And, spots or strips of thermoplastic adhesive is added. Once the shingles are installed the heat of the sun will warm these adhesive giving them a bit more grip.
Shingle Making Process
This entire process is complete with the cutting of the shingles to proper size as well as their tabs. The tabs help interlock the shingles and protect them from the wind. Once the process is complete there is some byproduct from it. This byproduct can be of ends of shingles and the cutouts from the tabs. All of the byproducts are typically sold to the asphalt road paving companies. This option, due the weight, doesn’t always make the most sense. But, if the plants are near to each other, it does work well for both.

How Do Roofing Insurance Claims Work?
Out of all the things we own, houses are definitely some of the most important, and often most expensive, assets. Thus, when something happens to the roof, there’s no other way to fix it but to either hire someone to repair it or replace it completely.
At Prime Roofing of Jacksonville, we do shingle roof replacements, as well as new constructions, among other things. We strive to provide our clients with the best quality roofs at the most affordable prices. However, before we start, clients need to determine if they can file an insurance claim due to excessive damage done to their roof. In this guide, we’ll describe this process and help everyone understand when they should or shouldn’t file a claim.
How to figure out the extent of the damage
During construction, roofs are made to be as weather-resistant as possible. However, even the best ones sometimes cannot remain damage-free when bad weather comes to town. High winds, extreme weather conditions and especially hail and hurricanes can wear down the roof and lead to all sorts of issues, such as leaks, broken shingles, etc.
Thus, before filing an insurance claim, the homeowner has to determine what the damage is. The best way to do that is to hire experts and get an estimate. Sometimes, a seemingly huge problem might not be that big of a deal at all. Likewise, a few broken parts could look like something we can fix fast. Yet, we might discover the damage is too severe for us to handle.
If it’s determined that there’s a lot to fix, the next logical step is to contact the insurance company and prepare to file a claim.
To claim or not to claim
Now, any homeowner has to take into account the deductible that they’ll have to pay if the claim is accepted. Because of that, before going through the whole process, they need to determine if the repair will cost more or less than that amount.
Since there’s a limit on insurance claims we can file without affecting our premiums, we have to be careful. One claim too many can make the insurance company suspicious. So, if the roof needs only minor repairs that won’t break the bank, filing a claim might not be necessary. However, if the damage is too severe, it’s the only logical next step.
Can the company reject the claim?
If the insurance company determines that the damage could have been prevented, they can reject the claim. Some situations are exempt from this, for example, high winds and hail. However, if we had a low-hanging branch that ruined our roof, they could reject the claim based on the fact that we had a chance to trim the branch beforehand. Basically, anything that we could have prevented from happening would be a fair enough reason not to accept the claim, including termite damage, faulty pipes and even mold.
So what should a homeowner do if they know the damage is severe yet they aren’t knowledgeable enough to prove it? Hiring a roofing contractor is vital then, as they can show the insurance assessors that you deserve a full settlement. And speaking of which…
Who are the assessors?
Once a homeowner files a claim, the insurance company will send someone to inspect the roof. They will essentially try to see if the damage is real or not.
It’s important to note that it’s not usually in the insurance company’s interest to immediately approve the claim. After all, they often want to give as little money as possible. However, that isn’t to say the company will try to trick the homeowner. They’re just cautious, as many people nowadays see insurance claim frauds as a great means to an end.
Types of coverage and deductibles
When it comes to roofing insurance claims, paying the deductible is inevitable. However, there are two types of coverages that will determine how much money we will get to repair the roof.
The standard one is the RCV, or replacement cost value. According to this type of coverage, the company will not take into account depreciation and give enough money to fix the roof, minus the deductible.
The other type, ACV, is the one most homeowners worry about. This one does take into account depreciation. The insurer will calculate the amount of money we get by subtracting both the depreciation value and the deductible from the whole amount. Thus, even if the new roof costs $9000, the owner might get as little as $3000.
Checking the estimate
Now, after the assessment, the insurance company will send a claim estimate. It’s of the essence for the homeowner and the contractor to review this estimate and see if something’s wrong. In general, it’s always better to get the estimate changed before the contractor even touches the roof. That gives the homeowner some peace of mind because they’ll know they’re covered in full.
The estimate is all good, now what?
After the claim is approved, the company will list out all the damages they found and send the first check to the owner. This check usually covers half of the amount needed to get the roof repaired. Once it arrives, the owner has a set period of time to repair the roof.
Usually, the first check goes to the contractors so that they can use it to get the materials. Once they repair the roof and create an invoice, listing out everything they did and how much it all cost, they’ll send it to the insurance company so that the homeowner can get the final check. Then, the homeowner pays the remainder of the total cost to the contractors, and the whole process is complete.
Start off on the right foot with Prime Roofing
Filing an insurance claim is not that complicated if you have the support of a trustworthy contractor. Yes, an insurance company will sometimes try to get out of the claim. However, the contractor could persuade the assessor to look at the facts and take the total damages into account.
At Prime Roofing, we pride ourselves on our expertise and the fact that we have what it takes to handle all sorts of roof damages. In addition, we’ve been in the business long enough to know how to help our clients get the best value for their money. Therefore, if you happen to need a roof replacement or any other service we offer, don’t hesitate to contact us via our contact page or by calling 904-530-1446.

How to Keep Your Roof Cool in the Summer
Are some of you already wondering how they’ll deal with those energy bills in the summer? We all know that sunshine in Florida is inevitable, but sweating our T-shirts off while at home just might be — and it has nothing to do with the regular A/C we use.
Our team of roofers at Prime Roofing have been helping residential clients with stable roofing systems for over a decade now. We know that sometimes, homeowners are not even aware their roof could be the root cause of excess heat!
Is it possible to keep a roof cool in the summer?
It depends on what kind of results we’re looking for. Of course, we cannot cancel out the Florida sunshine and have the roof completely cool. But what we can do is take certain steps to improve the whole situation.
Install light-colored shingles
Dark clothing in the summer is a big mistake, and it’s not just because black isn’t a fun color. The fact remains that darker colors tend to attract more sunshine. That’s why we often find ourselves practically melting on the pavement even though we’re in a plain T-shirt and shorts.
In contrast, light colors can reflect the rays and keep us cool. The same thing applies to roofs. If the shingles are light-colored, there’s a good chance they will reflect up to 90% more sunshine than dark-colored shingles. Thus, the whole house will be cooler and much more bearable to live in.
But what if you don’t have such shingles on your roof? Well, you can always call us for a perfect roof replacement or consider a minor roof improvement. You can cool down your roof by applying a couple of coats of paint that will reflect the sun rays.
Opt for asphalt shingles
We also have to take into account the materials that were used to make the roof. Some types of shingles, like the asphalt ones, contain granules that can reflect the rays and make the whole roof naturally cool. Thus, as the roof isn’t too hot, there’s no need to turn on almost every cooling device found in the house, which leads to a lower energy bill and more money to spend on other fun things.
Consider roof mist cooling systems
Even though this might sound impossible to do, these sorts of systems seem to work pretty well against scorching heat. Their main job is to spray a small amount of water onto the roof so that it evaporates. While that’s going on, the roof has time to cool down, allowing us to enjoy summer a bit more.
Create some shade or think about creating a rooftop garden
Most homeowners won’t even consider this kind of a garden because the roof they have doesn’t allow it. However, it’s possible to do it on flat roofs, and it’s pretty effective too. Since plants naturally soak in UV rays, they will protect the roof from becoming too hot during the summer.
Another good idea would be to consider creating some shade. Planting a tree or two that would keep the house cool is affordable, not to mention great for the environment. Still, one thing to note here is that trees shouldn’t be too close to the gutters. If leaves get there, you’ll have another problem on hand.
Install solar attic fans
Prime Roofing is known for its expertise and quality services, but we’re also passionate about helping people keep their roofs in top-notch condition. Thus, it’s important to consider if anything can be done about trapped heat.
A hot roof won’t last as long as you want, as the heat damages it one summer at a time. Thus, solar attic fans could very well be one of the best solutions for hot roofs. These fans remove the excess heat from the top part of the house, allowing you to get rid of the problem and ensure that your roof lasts for many years to come.
No need to put up with heat — there’s always a solution
No matter how great summer is, the roof that’s over our head has to stay there for as long as possible. That’s why Prime Roofing wants to ensure every client gets what they need at an affordable price, without compromising the quality of the roof and without having to deal with all the paperwork. We have been fixing roofs, replacing them, creating new ones and coming up with innovative roofing solutions for more than a decade now. So, if you need a reliable roofing contractor that will provide you with nothing but pure quality in just a few days, give us a call at 904-530-1446 or schedule your free estimate on our contact page.

Is roof replacement tax deductible?
When it comes to roof replacements, we all know that they are inevitable, even though they might cost us a lot of money. It’s the same with taxes — we have to pay them, no matter how much we dislike it.
At Prime Roofing, we know our clients are not looking for an easy way out. They are just like us — they’re trying to find the most suitable and affordable solution to roofing issues. Thus, we’ve decided to answer the most frequent question homeowners have — Is a roof replacement tax deductible?
Is a roof replacement an improvement or a repair?
It’s important to realize that there’s a huge difference between a home improvement and a repair. It all comes down to whether or not they add to the total value of the house, and if yes — to what extent.
The main difference between a home improvement and a repair lies in the fact that the former is not just a short-term fix. When we replace our whole roof, it should last us for at least 5 to 10 years. Thus, it has a more significant impact on the value of our house than a simple plumbing repair, for example.
If we have to repair a pipe or two, we’re actually making small changes to the house. As such, these aren’t an improvement that can one day determine how much we can get for our house if we sell it.
Essentially, we can consider anything that will prolong the use of the house as a capital improvement. If it adds value to the house as a whole, and it keeps adding value for years to come, then it’s a long-term fix. Such changes include upgrading the house, adding something new, like a second floor, and adapting one asset for another use. It’s simple —getting a new pool is not a repair. It’s something that can help us sell our home at a much higher price.
So why is all of this important? It’s crucial to know the difference because an improvement cannot be immediately deducted from the tax payment — but a repair can.
So there’s no way to deduct a roof replacement from my tax bill?
We mentioned that we could not deduct these improvements immediately. And that’s exactly where the answer to your troubles lies — in order to deduct a capital improvement, we have to take into account its depreciation.
Let’s say that a homeowner has to replace their roof, and the overall cost of the replacement is $10,000. In order to deduct this from the tax bill, they have to follow a set depreciation schedule that’ll last, for example, ten years.
In 10 years, the roof may or may not be in great condition — let’s assume it isn’t. Over those ten years, the value of the roof goes down. Thus, we cannot deduct the whole improvement yet — only a piece of it every year on our tax bill. If we divide $10000 with ten years, we’ll get$1000. That’s how much we can claim every year. In contrast, we can fully deduct a repair in the same year when it occurred; we have only restored something that doesn’t add too much value.
When in doubt, call in the experts
We at Prime Roofing understand that homeowners often worry about how much their roof replacement will cost. After all, that’s not the only expense in their life, and they always have to make ends meet.
That’s why, if you need help and a trustworthy roofing contractor with plenty of experience, Prime Roofing is your best bet. We serve the entire Jacksonville area and have no doubt we can provide you with the most suitable roofing solution. Schedule your free estimate today by filling out the form on our contact page or by calling 904-530-1446.

How to prepare for a roof replacement project
So, how do you prepare for a roof replacement project? It’s an exciting time where your roof is in need of repair but there are steps you should take to keep your pets and family safe. As the roofing company begins to work, children and pets can become curious and even want to get up close and see what the workers are doing. Once work has begun, your home or business is now a work zone with dangers of the unknown all around. There are nail guns and shingles which can lead to things falling from the roof.
Kids and pets are also disturbed by loud noises. Replacing a roof is a noisy job and this should be taken into consideration. Often times pets don’t like the noise and this can make them anxious. An anxious pet can destroy things that otherwise they would have left alone. You should find a place for your pets to go, a friends home or a pet resort to avoid this.
Relocate your car
Allowing your roofing contractor to have the prime parking spot will save time and money. Often the roofing contractor has to get to his tools, which are stored inside the vehicle. Allowing him to park where it is easy to access this will save him time and your money. So, move your car, put it where you can come and go as you please and not disturb the contractors as well as allowing them to get closer to the job site. If you park in the garage and the drive is going to block you from leaving, consider parking along the curb or where you will not get blocked in. Also, make sure you keep the garage door closed so that dirt and debris from the roof don’t enter it.
Remove all wall decor for safe keeping
Knick knacks on the shelves can be affected by the vibrations coming off the roof. Consider removing all wall decor that may be affected if it were to fall. This is most important on the level that is just under the roof. Keeping your valuables safe is important and it won’t take too long to go around and remove them.
Move patio and grill furniture
Anything decorative outside that is around the perimeter of the home should be removed and stored in a safe place. Things like nails, tools, and shingles can slide off the roof at a moments notice. Moving all this will allow the roofers access to the roof anywhere around the home. This will also keep your belongings safe from falling objects. If you don’t have indoor storage for these items, moving them away from the home in a neat pile until the roof replacement job is complete will help.
Let the neighbors know
Letting your neighbors know will be truly appreciated. As they will have to endure the noise as well. Sometimes they will have to prepare for a place for their pets as well, depending on how close the neighbors are. It is a much-appreciated gesture that doesn’t take a lot of time.
Be sure you prepare you and your loved ones for this great experience. Remember, construction is only a temporary inconvenience for beautiful results.
