Harry's "best friend" is the best boyfriend in the entire world.

Y/n loved her boyfriend more than she loved most things. He called her all sorts of beautiful things, would give her beautiful gifts for no good reason, and most importantly, he loves her and doesn't let her forget it. Amongst their friend group, they are the perfect match. Never apart. Never not talking to each other. Completely connected. It's been like this for the past year, and she loved it.

It took a while to get used to the constant flow of compliments, but she soon learned to bask in them. She still blushes and giggles at them because she still got butterflies whenever he showered her with love.

Harry hated it.

He hated how his best friend asked out the girl he had a crush on for the last year of uni, the one he befriended first. He hated how happy she seemed under his arm. He hates everything about them.

But

He still likes her. He loves whenever he is lucky enough to catch her alone. He loves catching her eye in a crowded room. The thing he loves most is when she smiles at him. He would give up a lot of things to just see that smile more often. It's not like she doesn't smile. In fact, she is smiling almost constantly, but it never quite meets the eye.

It's another one of the friend groups' weekly brunches where Harry overhears a conversation that piques his interest.

"We need to talk, and I think we should leave." The once warm voice of Y/n sounds upset and shakey it makes Harry feel uneasy.

"Let's just talk here. If we leave, people will think something is wrong." Dean's voice is stern and unmoving.

"Fine." Harry has never seen her this upset. "I know that you're cheating on me. I just need to know what I did wrong." To add salt into the wound, she reaches out for his hand, and he pulls back.

"Y/n, I'm not talking about this here." This is what made the tear fall from her big eyes. Harry just wishes he could reach out and wipe them away.

Taking a shakey breath, "You treat me as if I hung the sun, so I don't know what I did." A small sob is let out. "I love you so much. You mean everything to me. I'll fix whatever is wrong with me, just please don't leave me for her." Y/n's begging and pleading is a bit louder than she intended.

"You need to leave. I'll tell everyone you have a family emergency that you need to tend to by yourself. Go home and pack your shit because I'm done." Never in Harry's life has he ever wanted to physically hurt someone until this moment.

"No, you're not doing this to me. You can't be." She's in complete disbelief. "You said you were going to marry me!" Y/n semi shouted. Everything is falling apart in front of her. The man she so deeply loved destroyed her with so little words that he deserved a prize.

He built up her confidence with his sweet nothings. He overfilled her with love and words of affirmation. He made her feel seen. Then he took it all away with an affair.

They talked about marriage and kids and a future where they would have a porch swing and watch their grandkids run around. He said he was looking at rings.

They were supposed to be together till the end, but now...

Her mind is racing. Was she not pretty anymore? Was she ignoring him? Was she just simply not enough for him?

As she is stuck in her mind, she doesn't realize Dean has completely left her.

She's slowly losing the ability to breathe, and she can't feel the ground beneath her feet. Harry watches it all, and he can't bear it anymore.

"Y/n, I'm so sorry, but we need to take deep breaths." He holds her shaking hands gently.

"I'm not enough for him anymore, Harry, I'm not enough." She sobs into his chest. He's now holding up half her body weight, and he cradles her head.

"He doesn't deserve you. How about we leave through the back door and we can go back to my place and change out of these uncomfortable clothes and watch some movies?" Harry whispers gently to her as her tears stain his shirt.

Although something he would never admit, his heart broke for her. Not because he was upset that the pair was officially broken up, but because of how much pain she is in from it. He knows how difficult this is all going to be on her, especially since her and Dean lived together.

For now, he just wants to be there as a best friend. He'll help her get back on her feet. He'll be the best person possible if it means she will be smiling and not crying.

She simply nods at his suggestion and whispers a small "please" that makes him frown at how meek she is.

"Ready to go?" Another nod follows, and they are on their way out, leaving the weekly brunch.

right: one of the final frames of HS2, featuring an unknown character with straight black hair. i don’t think this is a coincidence—i’m taking this as evidence for my theory that Lane will be the new MC of HS3. it makes no sense to even introduce this character in HS2, let alone give her any kind of POV or goals otherwise:

as of right now in HSR, Lane has no idea what the Order is and certainly doesn't want to join it. but...there's no reason that all of those things can't change over the course of the story. there's clearly something majorly off about Lane. who's to say she isn't, say, part angel or demon and would go to Heaven if she were to die at the end of HSR?

dogging on hs is a full time job and we're employees of the month 🤞 ntm on hs tho bc i will end up playing hs3 if it's ever released bc i need to see my li happy.

im new to rc so i can't say much about the writers but i think what you said does make a lot of sense. when new characters were introduced in hs2 it had the same tone as hs1. i would say there was a slight improvement bc astaroth and hunger were 10x more interesting than hs1 characters but the dialogue and their way of speaking was the same as hs1. like how do you pride yourself on being soo much better than mortals and speak exactly like them? why are you, as lucifer, speaking like a frat boy? make it make sense.

anyway, as opposed to hs, the immortals are actually different from mortals. lane noticing the lack of human warmth and emotions on cains face, despite how serene and aristocratic he looks right off the bat immediately showed us that they're not easily understood and they operate differently than humans. and the dialogue flows so much more naturally in hsr and different characters have their own distinguished way of speaking. (interesting that cain sometimes speaks so formally like during the church scene, but at other times uses mortal slang. just how long has he been roaming around earth?)

tbh now that ive analyzed the flying scene, he does seem somewhat sincere and like you said, they're both only looking out for themselves so they have a sense of kinship. (also love that lane is so unbothered about saving humanity or whatever and specifically said shes only going to translate what she needs... im obsessed with her)

but is it insane of me to hope that he's just being nice for the sake of using her? ive been ranting to everyone who would listen about how much i adore the church scene, it was the exact balance of unsettling and sensual, psychedelic and dreamlike. it had so much tension and i loved how cain was portrayed in it. but he's being suspiciously sweet and protective of her, cute, but i miss the tension 😭 he and lane are some of the most interesting characters ive seen in a while and id hate for them to lose everything that makes them unique to a generic romance so early.

what about your theories on how they could've known each other earlier? and what do you think about cain's past?

it really is just in the book's nature i think because if you look at the massive growth of alice's writing between hs1 and hs2, it's wild how the writing for hs2 still isn't that much better except in certain areas (hunger is masterfully written, for example, and the emo vibe was captured pretty well too since alice is an angst grandmaster)

like heaven's secret is simply, intrinsically, a haphazard low-quality story - because that was the foundation in hs1 and so it's only natural hs2 and hs3 will be the same. and i'm not hating on it when i say that because i definitely get why some people love it but as someone who's a bit of a snob and doesn't like harry potter vibe stories, it's just not for me

i'm living for your thoughts and analysis of hs:r though omg i didn't catch on to cain's manner of speech swinging between formal and informal, that's so interesting?? but YES overall i'm also hoping that we'll get more of the intensity we got with the church scene and that the dark undertone to their dynamic will prove to be an actual Theme and not just a one-off thing. i would actually GRIEVE if cain's route devolved into basic lovey dovey shit 😭

when it comes to cain's past and his history with lane, i... have no clue tbh like that's just how good the suspense is. generally i'm expecting cain to be somehow tied to the event/entity/power that caused lane's memory gap because her dreams are clearly very significant and she dreams of him at the start of the book + that could be the reason why she got so woozy in the church scene instead of him seducing her with his power, because of whatever tie that binds them through that. but we know so little about him and his motivations that it's hard for me to theorize anything about his past. i adore pre-established dynamics though so i honestly think we're in for some juicy shit regardless of our theories. i can't wait!!!

Why do I have a feeling that HS4 is coming a lot sooner than we expect? Co-opLive opens in April? I'm thinking maybe we have a single until then. And the potential of him being the first performer there and doing an ONO for HS4 like he did with Harry's House. I get so excited just by the thought of it.

I hope he will open co op live with an ONO, that also lines up with the rumours about a sphere residency in May, is same Grammy cycle his albums have been in and has a 9 month break. It’s hard to gauge how much the pandemic messed with how spaced out his albums have been.

In the last show he said something like:

I think it’s the Italian part that has everyone writing him off forever, he didn’t say that in English as far as I can tell.

He had a break of 18 months between 1D and releasing HS1, but also did a lot of work then because it was his first album, he was in the studio within 3 months of leaving the band and filmed the behind the scenes and Sign of the Times video.

He had another touring break of 18 months between covid cancelling show and LOT starting, but recorded HS3 and filmed 2 movies in that time. He was in the studio after a few weeks.

If the April theory is true it would have been a 9 month break, he was seen with Tom and Tyler 3 months into it. I think HS4 was probably well progressed when the tour ended.

It’s anyone’s guess, I hope for an April release. If not, the end of year will be as long as any other break he’s taken but they’ve been touring breaks, he kept working.

I think the reason Harry beat her is because out of all the nominees, he had the smallest team who worked on his album, whereas Beyoncé had such a huge list of writers and producers!! Harry is forced to go on a blind date, and y/n is the definition of the color pink.

Harry lives inside books, specifically of the romantic genre. He loves love but isn't seeking it out for himself. From what the past has taught him, dating just isn't for him.

But tonight, he has a date planned. His best (and only) friend, Niall, has set him up with his "perfect" match. Her name is Y/n, and the only thing Niall told him is that she owns a flower and book shop. Despite all efforts, Niall wouldn't allow Harry to cancel this date.

It's now 5 minutes before the date is supposed to start, and Harry is sitting down at this fairytale like restaurant in the heart of San Diego.

He's sitting, impatiently waiting for Y/n to show up. His nerves start to ramp up the closer it gets to eight. The time is now 7:59, and he hears something that piques his interest.

"Hi, I'm y/n, I have a reservation under the name, Harry." Her voice is soft and gentle. It sounds like she's never spoken above an "indoor" voice. She follows the hostess towards the table Harry is sat at. He gets up to greet her.

As she gets closer, his breath gets stuck in his throat. She is gorgeous, and according to Niall, her personality is phenomenal. He's never been more nervous in his life.

"Hi, you must be Y/n, I'm Harry!" His accent makes her fold, Niall didn't tell her anything about this Harry guy.

"Yes! It's nice to meet you." She goes in for a hug, and Harry has to say if he had to rate it, it was a 10/10 hug.

"So you told me you've been here before, what would you recommend?" She cocks a brow at him, and he just knows she's the one for him.

1. My personal favorite relates to the “What makes you beautiful” Behind the scenes video. Harry has constantly reaffirmed the importance of this song for him, keeping it in his setlist all of his solo career, he said he fell in love to it and many assume he was talking about falling for Louis. In the bts, Louis suggests they jump of a roof in the set but, being his normal overprotective self over Harry, doesn’t let H jump instead helping him down

2. The other happened during One direction's stay in New Zealand in 2012, when Louis and Liam jumped off one of the tallest buildings in the country, Harry didn't jump but waited for them on the landing pad

As It Was: 1D and closeting trauma

Okay, okay, I'm done wrecking my brain over this and want to share my thoughts to see what you guys think.

Disclaimer: This is all procude of my brain, just one person's opinion, and could well be incorrect in parts or as a whole. This is a LARRY intrepretation of Harry's song As It Was and if you hate the idea, please scroll, let me and my unfixable mind be. I am not saying this is the absolute truth or that other interpretations could not exist. I am sure someone else can perfectly figure out how this song is all about Olivia, and I welcome it. No hate, please.

TLDR: I think As It Was is all about the trauma of being forcefully closeted and isolated from Louis during the 1D era.

So, let's go.

CHILD: "Come on, Harry, we wanna say “Goodnight” to you... "

-> Children in this song represent the fans who dream of being romantically involved with the star, to whom they had to cater during 1D, the perceived teenage audience of the boybands I guess. This child shouts at Harry through the partially see-through glass, partially seeing the real Harry and in large parts not, that she wants to say goodnight to him aka be the one to sleep next to him, be in bed with him. Bear with me on this.

After this, Harry is seen outside the door he was just trapped behind, walking forward among other people. When he starts singing, the walking reverses, he starts walking backwards:

Holdin’ me back Gravity’s holdin’ me back I want you to hold out the palm of your hand Why don’t we leave it at that?

-> Okay so when Harry was outside, he was not yet a star, he was walking among the others as one of them, a regular person. As soon as he starts singing, gravity starts pulling him towards this place where he will become trapped.

I am going to go ahead and assume that "you" in these lyrics is Louis, all the time, just like the blue woman in the video is. I think he would have wanted, for Louis and probably also for himself, that they would have been able to offer to the world what they wanted to offer, at the palm of their hands, and then just set the limit there, leave it at that. Unfortunately it was not possible.

Harry gets trapped inside the building and:

Nothin’ to say And everything gets in the way Seems you cannot be replaced And I’m the one who will stay, oh-oh-oh...

-> Louis is stuck in the same gravitational pull as Harry is, walking with him, and we even see a classic subtle Larry hand-touching moment here. The lyrics are self-evident. Louis can't be replaced and Harry is the one who will stay, meaning they are given different explanations and maybe also false promises of awaiting freedom but the truth is that both of them are stuck.

In this world, it’s just us You know it’s not the same as it was In this world, it’s just us You know it’s not the same as it was As it was, as it was You know it’s not the same

-> I think at this point of the song the chorus refers to the time before becoming a celebrity. Things have changed permanently for them both. Inside that world (the building) they find the world where there's just the two of them (centre of the spinning wheel). You can literally see how they first walk together, then spin a bit, embrace as they find love, walk separately again, find each other again, walk separately again... Harry even lifts Louis up in a way that makes me think they found a way to enjoy the spin for a moment.

Then gravity throws Louis off the wheel and Harry points at the ceiling, only to find himself outside in a closed space over a swimming pool.

Answer the phone, “Harry, you’re no good alone Why are you sitting at home on the floor? What kinda pills are you on?”

-> They are still inside the building, only now they are outside at the same time. Harry, Louis and the other people representing the rest of 1D (or, more broadly, all the celebrities who are in similar situations). They are all standing on narrow surfaces. If they fall, there's water. It's a warning.

Outside the house, seen by the public, yet still trapped and controlled. "Harry you're no good alone" means that Harry has no chance of succeeding without the support of the supposedly "helpful" people who are controlling the situation and everyone in it. Note that HOME is mentioned here, why are you sitting at home on the floor can be read as why are you focusing on Louis and the stability he brings when you could achieve anything with the small price of abandoning just that. I am not so sure about the pills here, perhaps it may refer to his and Louis' love being just a phase, i.e. you take a pill (fall in love) but the effects will be gone after a while (you fall out of love).

Ringing the bell and nobody’s coming to help Your daddy lives by himself He just wants to know that you’re well, oh...

-> They all had to get undressed, meaning they are forced to bare parts of themselves, some to a larger degree, some to a lesser degree. The fact that Louis didn't undress fully might refer to how he was more willing to stay in the closet at that point than Harry was (what's up with the glove??). The first line is about trying and failing to get help. "Daddy" who is looking after them and supposedly caring about them, who is living by himself (only looking after himself), well. We all know who that was. This talks about how they are forced to reveal so much that is private about themselves, for all to see, but only what those in control allow them to. Yet - Harry and Louis embrace here as well. In public, regardless of the consequences. Everyone with eyes can see that they are in love.

And the consequences come:

In this world, it’s just us You know it’s not the same as it was In this world, it’s just us You know it’s not the same as it was As it was, as it was You know it’s not the same...

-> They are imprisoned/trapped, still looking at each other, trying and failing to hold on to each other. Now the meaning of the chorus changes. It's like by saying "it's just us" Harry is trying to swear his love for Louis. The stunts are brought in (invisible-like people hovering over them while they are trapped), the colour in their life disappears when they are pulled apart and what's revealed underneath is a colourless life.

Going home, get ahead, light-speed internet I don’t wanna talk about the way that it was Leave America, two kids follow her I don’t wanna talk about who’s doing it first...

-> Harry tries to look for Louis on the spinning wheel again but they end up both running it into opposite directions. Note that Harry is NOT singing this bit, it's more like Harry is thinking it. (Btw also note how outer part of the wheel is the Louis shade of blue.)

"Going home, get ahead, light-speed internet" I think it might be a reference to Larries and how they got ahead and spread the truth very quickly. So Harry is running and THINKING that he wants to go home (to Louis) and get ahead of the narrative because the Larries with their light-speed internet (lol) do know how to put pieces together and are ready to talk about it. Thinking and wanting it, not quite achieving it. I think here "the way that it was" refers to the previous "as it was" aka being trapped in stunts. In fact, he's thinking about leaving America and the two kids that follow her.

Please don't kill me, this is just one interpretation, but... I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the America line. Remember when I said the child at the beginning represented a certain type of fan? There are two of them: those who want Louis and those who want Harry. So the two kids here represents the part of the audience that the stunts and all this closeting is being catered to, and America here represents that heteronormative narrative, perhaps simply because such audience is possibly larger in numbers in America as opposed to e.g. Europe and/or the conventions that trapped them come from the US. So in "two kids follow her", "her" could refer to either the narrative or the stunts.

Obviously many simpler people will hear America and two kids and think about Olivia. That's probably intentional too, and the line could have been a late addition/tweak to this song. It only highlights the intended meaning.

The other thing Harry doesn't talk about its who's doing it first. It also refers to the previous situation, i.e. being trapped in the stunts, and the horrible "reverse gay chicken" they had to play with which one of them is going to be publicly paired off first and to whom etc.

Louis is gone. Harry is alone on the wheel. He is then seen looking at the doorway, familiar from so many other Louis and Harry contexts - it's the gateway to freedom. Upon seeing it, he starts fighting. Dancing and fighting. I guess we have moved onto his solo career.

All of a sudden, in the middle of the fighting, he's realising he's outside.

For a moment he is both inside, still trapped but now playing with the room, feeling its limits, and already outside. And during the final, fateful spin, he ends up at the gates, smiling, and breaks free. Very "but honestly I don't have to choose anymore" vibes here.

So this is a story of being trapped in a glass closet together with Louis, being forcefully separated from him, being left alone in the same trap but managing to figure out a way to break free.

Final thoughts:

I was surprised at first that Harry wanted to handle this topic in such depth but then in all honesty it has not been handled this explicitly before, and it certainly must have been traumatising. It sort of also makes sense for this to be the first single out of Harry's House album, whether or not the rest talk about "home" or "house". He did break free in the end, you know.

Hopefully the rest of the album's songs are happier. I am sure we will see him meeting Louis again, in some shape or form. But I get a feeling that the era he left behind was so traumatising that he WILL come back to it in later songs of this album, as well.

I've yet to combine all of this with you are home's tweets and door imagery, but here's something:

what happens in between colours? / slider from red to blue - We already know that this is about purple. If you combine red (Harry) and blue (Louis) you get Larry, and in between the word colour there is Lou. This is the hill I'll die on.

in this world, it’s just us, you know it’s not the same as it was / upside down globe - The upside down world that is not featured in this video or lyrics but will certainly come later, will probably refer to the stunt/staged world, based on this. Which is what we already thought with the stage and doll house.

shed the past, wear the present / red dress and blue shapes - This is imagery from outside, on top of the pool. The red is what Harry shed on the ground I think. Not yet sure of the interpretation, perhaps 1D era is the red he shed? And now he's wearing the present (and having faith in the future?)

find a moment of calm, colour it in / black and white pattern - This was the dull life revealed when Harry and Louis were separated. I guess he talks about how he found happiness with him in the middle of the storm, coloured it in. Very sad.

every place you’ve ever been will never stay the same and neither will you / wheel - I mean this is the spinning wheel they were stuck in. I think it means it changed both of them for good, the entire experience.

your world is waiting / see-through glass - This is interesting because "you" has meant Louis in the lyrics. I guess it could be the both of them, and the world waiting for them outside that glass. Will be interesting to see how that will relate to the world being upside down.
