You ever just… wish that you enjoyed a popular story so you could join in the discussion of it?

I’ve been trying SO hard to enjoy HSR and I just… don’t. I can’t even entirely place why; I love the HS universe, I love horror, I love angst. But I just… don’t like HSR. The season finale was pretty good, but nothing else about the story draws me in. The pacing is waaaay too slow (and I love a slow-burn, I really do!), Cain is annoying af, Greg and Anna are too baby-faced, Dmitry (and the squad) DRUGGED Lane… I had high hopes for Season 2, but it’s gone back to that slower-than-a-snail’s pace that I’ve come to know the story for.

Look, I’m a Malbonte lover, I know all about problematic pixels, but so far not a single backstory has come out that made me figure out how to twist these people into likeable characters. We’re 1.5 seasons in, and I couldn’t tell you a single thing about Cain other than “he’s annoyingly angsty and MyStErIoUs. 🙄” Maybe Greg and Anna are better LIs, but they’re just as, if not more, sidelined than Mimi was in HS (plus there’s the whole ‘drugging’ thing they were both active participants in).

Maybe it’s because the majority of the LIs look 16 years old, or the problematic nature behind ALL of them so far. Maybe it’s all the Vicky hate that’s come out of comparing her to Lane (who I wholeheartedly disagree is a “better character”; she’s a different trope than Vicky but she’s not any less of one). Or maybe it’s all the Alice hate that’s coming out of it, as though she isn’t a real person who, like it or not, created the universe that made HSR exist in the first place. I dunno, but I’m so turned off the story and it’s all anyone seems to be talking about these days.

Either way, it’s just not for me… and I really wish it was.

Well, I’m going to talk about Lux in Tenebris. That fic is consuming a lot of my life rn. 😂

Ah, I have been trying to pick one scene to chat about but I can’t! I know the obvious choice is probably one of the more impactful visions (dungeon in Chapter 10, joint vision in Chapter 14, graduation day in Chapter 18) but they’re all important (even the more pointless seeming ones) because they help establish a relationship and tension between Malbonte and Antigone. I wanted both of them to get to know and (eventually) appreciate all parts of each other, not just the parts the other immortals deem ‘desirable’ (ie: I wanted Antigone to get to know Mal, and Mal to get to know the human side of Antigone). One of my favourite things Alice has established between the two is that Malbonte loves everything about Vicky, even her flaws that she isn’t even aware of, and I wanted to lean into that.

Since I can’t pick a particular scene (especially not without spoilers), maybe I’ll just talk about how happy I am with the direction LiT is taking overall. The visions weren’t even part of the original outline (!!!),but I am so pleased with how they ended up building that relationship with human Antigone and Mal, how they established history between all aspects of both of them, and how they strengthened their connection over all. As you said, it adds some spice to their canon relationship because they have history and a deeper connection early on, but I didn’t have to change very much of the canon story to make the visions work.

Overall this fic has been a lot of fun for me because it deviated so much from the original outline. Plus, the visions ended up being all five of my top five favourite scenes in the fic, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the Mal part of Malbonte. 🤭 My hope is that they helped to add layers to him, and helped make the more rushed parts of their ‘slow-burn’ slow down a bit, if that makes sense.

Thanks for asking! I feel like I could talk about this fic forever 😂. There’s a reason the chapters are so long.
