Hey Johns, what ever happened to the old krauss era drum machine? do you still have it, did you sell it, or did it just plain old stop working so you had to get rid of it? related question, was it the same drum machine from self-titled all the way to apollo or was it a different drum machine? Thanks for reading.

JF: the Yamaha RX15 which is kinda THE sound of the 1st album and the small but mighty Dr. Rhythm (which might only be handclaps on Puppet Head) is still in my possession. The original Lincoln-era Alesis HR16 stopped working about a decade ago and has been replaced a couple of times since. Flood was made with a variety of home sampled "one hits" (literally puting a mic to a mallet hitting a metal box, the Cafe Bustello can, etc.) captured by the Casio FZ1 sampling keyboard. Apollo 18 was the Roland R8.

RENAULT CACIA JÁ PRODUZ, EM EXCLUSIVO, A NOVA CAIXA DE VELOCIDADES DO GRUPO RENAULT

Dois anos depois da Renault S.A. e do AICEP, na presença do Primeiro-Ministro António Costa, terem formalizado um investimento superior a 100 milhões de euros na Renault Cacia, a fábrica iniciou a produção – em exclusivo! – da caixa de velocidades com o código JT 4. Destinada aos modelos da Renault, Clio, Captur e Mégane, e da Dacia, Sandero e Duster, só esta referência será responsável, em 2021, por cerca de 70% do volume de negócios da Renault Cacia.

Com recurso a uma linha de montagem específica, a Renault Cacia já iniciou a produção da caixa de velocidades JT 4, sendo de sublinhar que é a única fábrica do Grupo Renault, no mundo, a produzir a referência. Uma opção estratégica, também sustentada pelo facto da unidade portuguesa ter vindo a ser considerada, nos últimos anos, e de entre todas as fábricas de componentes mecânicos do Grupo e da Aliança Renault-Nissan, como a melhor na produção de caixas de velocidades, segundo os exigentes critérios de Qualidade, Custo e Prazo!

Na sequência deste investimento, um investimento superior a 100 milhões euros, a Renault Cacia já tem a capacidade de fornecer 500.000 unidades/ano da caixa de velocidades JT 4 às diversas fábricas de montagem de automóveis espalhadas pelo mundo. No primeiro quadrimestre de 2021, a capacidade de produção será aumentada para 550.000 unidades/ano.

A caixa de velocidades JT 4 equipa os motores Renault a gasolina 1.0 (HR10) e 1.6 (HR16) que estão disponíveis em cinco diferentes modelos: Renault Clio, Captur e Mégane, e Dacia Sandero e Duster.

Para Christophe Clément, Diretor da Renault Cacia, “o início da fabricação da nova caixa de velocidades do Grupo Renault é um marco histórico para a Renault Cacia. Não só porque se trata de um produto de topo na tecnologia de caixas manuais como, para a sua fabricação, a Renault Cacia fez um grande investimento na qualificação dos seus Recursos Humanos. A atribuição em exclusivo deste produto à Renault Cacia é a prova da competência desta fábrica que vê assim o seu futuro imediato assegurado com esta nova caixa de velocidades”.

Para além de caixa de velocidades, a Renault Cacia produz muitos outros componentes para o Grupo Renault, nomeadamente bombas de óleo (é o maior fornecedor do Grupo), árvores de equilibragem, bem como outras referências para caixas e componentes mecânicos. Com uma produção tão especializada e diversificada, pode dizer-se que, em cada automóvel Renault que circula no mundo, existe pelo menos um componente fabricado na Renault Cacia.

Em 2021, a Renault Cacia cumprirá o 40º aniversário. A unidade está situada num complexo industrial de 340.000 m² de área total, dos quais 70.000 m² de área coberta, sendo a segunda maior do setor automóvel, em Portugal, em número de colaboradores, num total de 1.380.

Well, I say my first gig, though I suppose technically the one-off performance in a Haywards Heath wine bar, as part of what could only loosely be described as a band, might count. We were backing a singer so…um… enigmatic that he eschewed such conventional terms as ‘verse’ or ‘chorus’, rather referring to the parts of his masterpieces by visual symbols. This meant that on stage he would occasionally turn to us and gnomically utter “wheel symbol two” or “make it sound more like a sinking ship”. No, seeing as that performance was free, awful, and we only got paid in wine which I a) was too young to drink, and b) didn’t like anyway, let’s move on to my first gig proper.

We were playing the Sausage Machine, a ramshackle and occasional club night in the basement of a Hampstead pub, run by a friend’s brother (and if you’d heard our early demo tapes you’d see why only a friend or a relative would book us). This time we were rehearsed, had raided every Oxfam shop in the Camden area for stage clothes, and ready to roll. All except the drum machine. We’d tried to get a real drummer but they seemed a strange and mercurial breed. Some had been good in rehearsal but then disappeared. Some were in about ten other bands. Some (and I’m thinking of soon-to-be Elastica drummer Justin Welch here were both, and crashed their car carrying all our gear on the way home from the first rehearsal).

So it was the drum machine for us. I’d been prepared for any one of us to have stage fright, even on a stage the size of a largish beach towel, but I hadn’t expected it from the Alessis HR16. About three songs in, just as I was thinking “OK… this is OK, we can do this” it stopped mid-song. Cue thirty seconds of “maybe we can just plow on through oh shit this sounds awful” and then the four of us grinding to separate halts. And huddling around it on stage trying the usual technical tricks to get it running again – not a great look. It did the same thing on the next song. And the one after that. By now the audience had gone from being pissed off to gently amused, and the fourth and final time it combusted we got the biggest cheer of the night. The set finally limped to a conclusion and we sheepishly sloped off stage, only to remember we had to pack up all our gear and sheepishly sloped back on again.

The next day we put an advert in the NME for a drummer.

2008 maybe... 3rd ever #anklepants show at the then newly opened #redrattlertheatre @redrattlertheatre in marrickville Sydney #reecardfarché armed with #casiodg20, midi as vocoder modulator, way before the days of the wireless input controllers etc, face was hard wired to machine and racks of hardware and other input controllers most likely #anklepantsjustoneoftheguys being played , with heavily bent #casiosk1 and #hr16 both with patch bays in foreground <3

I vividly remembering seeing the video for this song this come on 120 Minutes in 1986 and it was fan-at-first-sight. Went out and bought the record the next day. I was especially enamored of the fact that the song prominently uses the "Funny" preset on the Casio MT-100 keyboard, which was the keyboard I had at the time, and was actually my first electronic keyboard. it wasn't a real synthesizer, and I was always very cognizant of this shortcoming, but TMBG made me believe i could make "real" "professional" music with it anyway. I decided to pull out the MT-100 and have a go at the part, and once I'd done that, I figured I might as well do the drums and bass as well. I semi-cheated by sampling the "Funny" preset and sequencing the part. I'm too lazy to learn the whole thing and play it live. The drums are Yamaha RX15 samples, which is the drum machine they used on that first album, though I had to bring in a tambourine (Alesis HR16) because the RX15 doesn't have one- not sure which drum machine they used for that, as I don't think they got their HR16 until the next album. The snare doesn't quite sound right either, so that might have been from a different machine too. I don't know what they used for the bass, but I got reasonably close with Arturia's Minimoog plugin. There's some accordion or something playing chords in the original version that was too far back in the mix for me to want to figure out, so I didn't bother with that. Feel free to use for karaoke!
