WORLD WAR I AND THE WIZARDING WORLD – A MASTERPOST

1. The Basics:

The Muggle World:

World War I (28 July 1914 – 11 November 1918), often abbreviated as WWI, was one of the deadliest global conflicts in history. It was fought between two coalitions, the Allies and the Central Powers. Fighting took place throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific, and parts of Asia.

The Allies, or the Entente Powers, were an international military coalition of countries led by France, the United Kingdom, Russia, the United States, Italy, and Japan against the Central Powers or Central Empires of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. [X]

The Wizarding World:

During the war, British Minister for Magic Archer Evermonde was responsible for passing emergency legislation forbidding wizards and witches from getting involved, in an attempt to prevent mass breaches of the International Statue of Secrecy. This did not prevent thousands of wizards from discreetly aiding Muggles wherever they could. Minister Evermonde's position drew the public condemnation of Wizengamot member Henry Potter, which caused a minor stir at the time. Henry's outspoken pro-Muggle views were one of the chief reasons for the Potter family's exclusion from the Sacred Twenty-Eight. [X]

2. The Wizarding War Effort:

Most witches and wizards were not directly involved with the war, though their lives were certainly affected by it to varying degrees. While the Ministry passed legislation to forbid wizards from participating in the war, it did not neglect it completely. In addition to the witches and wizards who aided muggles illegally, there were several different programs started by the ministry, such as the Owl Air Force*, Intelligence operations by the Auror Department, and Magizoologist operations (Like Newt Scamander and the Ukrainian Iron Bellies at the Eastern Front).

(*The Owl Air Force might have been an illegal operation but we've chosen to make it part of the Ministry. Canon isn't clear on which it was.)

The Auror Department:

This is part of WW1 verse, and not mentioned in canon.

Volunteer aurors were trained to join muggle armies to make sure there was no illegal usage of magic among the ranks. They were also tasked with gathering intelligence, tracking down dark wizards (and other dissenters), and even infiltrating and spying on the Central Powers.

3. Wizarding Politics in the 1910s

People of Note:

British Minister for Magic: Archer Evermonde, in office 1912-1923

Evermonde took office in 1912, after the mysterious passing of his predecessor Venusia Crickerly. Some certainly suspected foul play, but nevertheless Evermonde enjoyed the trust of the population enough that he managed to push through several legislations, including the ban of wizarding involvement in the First World War.

Head of The British Auror Department: Willard Hartford (WW1 verse canon)

The Hartofrd family had established itself as a family of aurors a couple of generations ago, so it was only natural for Willard to pursue the career. He became Head Auror in 1911. He is the boss of Ares Gaunt and Lunas Avery, among others.

The Supreme Mugwump: Gala De Lange (WW1 verse canon)

Gala served as the Dutch Minister for Magic before becoming the Supreme Mugwump. She is known for her neutrality and insistence upon the non-involvement of wizards in the muggle conlifct.

Head of The German Auror Department: Anton Vogel (WW1 verse canon)

During the war Vogel served as the head of the German auror department. He later became the German Minister for Magic and the Supreme Mugwump. He is the father of Alexej Kavinsky. Vogel's motivations are shrouded in mystery and eventually he becomes involved in the plans of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

The General Political Climate: (WW1 verse canon)

Across Europe, many witches and wizards were not happy with the war and saw that it was the muggles who were to blame for such chaos and violence. There was a rise in blood-purist ideology, as well as isolationism and anti-muggle sentiment.

Minister Evermonde wanted to keep out of the war as much as possible, and this, if anything, was a reflection of many of his other policies too. He did not wish to effect change, instead he was a traditionalist who was comfortable keeping up the status quo. While he was not overtly blood-purist, he did not do anything to speak for muggleborns, squibs, or any of the groups classified as "creatures".

Mistreatment of minorities & Blood-purism:

As we see the Ministry still being a cesspool of bigotry and corruption in Harry's time in the 1990s, it can be safely assumed that things were not better during the beginning of the century. The radical organization TOWER fuelled the vitriol towards muggles and muggleborns, creating a scapegoat for all the frustration and anger.

TOWER

The Transnational Order of Wizards' Exposure Right is an anti-muggle organization dedicated to toppling the British Ministry of Magic but it operates across all of Europe. They use any means necessary to advance their goals and their existance is known only to few. Their power lies within their secrecy.

HP WWI OCs: Livia and Hestia Prewett

Livia and Hestia are sisters who attended Hogwarts at the beginning of the 20th century. Livia became a healer after graduation and Hestia felt it was unjust to leave all muggles to their own devices and joined efforts to secretly aid them during the war. They're born in 1892 and 1894 respectively.

I've seen everyone's awesome OCs for this era and I wanted to contribute, though these two are pretty minor OCs, really more like plot bunnies. So if you need to name drop some random Hogwarts classmates or you need a healer to show up, Livia and Hestia are more than happy to help!

I tried to find FCs who were not in use, at least not for this era but damn you guys have so many OCs that I got a bit overwhelmed. Let me know if you want me to change either of the FCs, I have other options😂❤

Best Friends - Besides his sister he doesn’t really have any truly close best friends. Either he doesn’t let people in because he can be a bit egotistical and think they aren’t good enough or that other people meet him and don’t like how he comes across. Professor Alecai Kainen - He is Andy’s favorite professor at Oxford who teaches the secret wizard students. He is hired when the war starts to lead a team to experiment with magical weapons created by TOWER (@savetheundoneyears) so they can learn to disarm them and make cures for any curses or hexes or effects. He refuses the suggestions of some of the most brilliant minds of the wizard world and instead insists on hiring his students for his team. He does it so they can gain experience, however he starts to regret it later when the dangerous work starts to take his students lives. He always tries to put himself first and protect the students. He does eventually die doing so. FC: Martin Short

Audry Kainen - She is the daughter of Alecai and is one of the first women students to attend Oxford lectures without chaperones when the rule is lifted in 1914. She strives to be more than just Professor Kainen’s daughter and tries to prove that she belongs and that she didn’t get there simply by being his daughter. She does love him though and he is very proud of everything she does. He knows she is capable on her own without him. Audry and Andy have a friendship that starts out rocky (as you do when two powerful intelligent people think they are both right) but they end up great friends. She reminds Andy of his sister and she also likes that he isn’t one of the many guys who wants to sleep with her or doubts her because she’s a woman. FC: Jessica Biel

PERSONALITY

Child: Growing up he was afforded a lot of luxury as the Vallens had a lot of money. He also would follow his sister around everywhere and loved when they would play. He was also curious about everything and was given the best tutors and he quickly displayed natural intellect and was gifted like his sister. Once his sister discovered her magic and got her letter, he also wanted to explore magic and soon after he got his own letter. This catapulted his confidence as he knew it was rare for two magical children to come from muggles.

Teenage: During Hogwarts, his success in his studies built his ego even further. He was proud of himself, his intelligence, his family, and magic. He also started to experiment with his appearance as he started adopting a more feminine look. Wherever his sister would go, he wouldn’t be far behind. They became really close as their parents expected them to attend all the fancy rich parties they threw at their estate. They would stick together and gossip and whisper about all the guests as they giggled and joked about people.

Early Adulthood: Andy followed his sister to Oxford University after they graduated Hogwarts. They both were hungry to learn more and soon discovered Oxford University home to both a muggle and secret wizard population. They had the best of both worlds to study. Andy started to feel lonely and sad as he was naive and egotistical and did not talk to anyone. He thought they weren’t like him enough to be worth getting to know them. He did not really mean for it to be rude, but he just didn’t think about it. Once the First World War breaks out, he starts to grow up a bit more and learns to separate himself from his rich and gifted upbringing and he gains friendships in the team founded by his wizard Professor that experiments with magical weapons and whose goal is to disarm and find cures for them. He ends up watching half of his team die horrible deaths in accidents with the weapons.

Late Adulthood: After the first war, Andy finishes his studies. Instead of becoming a professor at Oxford or Hogwarts (he’s offered many jobs from both), he decides to try to help the less fortunate receive education. He moves to a small country town and teaches classic literature to muggles. He tries to escape the wizard world a bit because of his experience with dangerous magic and may have PTSD. When the Second World War starts, he is offered a job again from the wizard world which he immediately turns down. He no longer has the ego and ambition to be a hero. Instead, he keeps teaching and also protects his students. He would also shelter and help refugees escape while making sure children still receive safe education and not be forced to fight.

Corrine grew up in Wales in a small and humble home with her widowed father, who encouraged her to be the best version of herself. He never once judged her desires, and was her biggest supporter, even when society asked him to forsake her.

A Scottish woman, she was from a bureaucratic family that expanded their business to southern Wales and were looking for a match for their daughter to solidify their grip on the business, and found it on Scottish-Welsh Cathal Lovette. They clicked instantly and had a daughter, Corrine, before Felicia caught uterine cancer and passed when Cory was three years old.

A serious but soft-hearted man, he was reserved with those whom he didn't know and, since his wife passed, closed-off to everybody save his daughter Cory. He was protective of her and was reluctant to send her to England in the gist of the war, but he knew that limiting his daughter would only make it worse. He supported her, even when she came back with child with the child's father being dead.

Mack and Cory's relationship was odd and complicated from the start. He was one of the many people who underestimated her, and bantered often with one another.

Yet, they were drawn to one another like magnets, and, in a way, somehow understood one another. Their late nights drinking and talking (also bickering) soon escalated, and while the feelings were there, they couldn't give them a name.

When Merrick died, Cory was in shock. It was such a shock, she retreated from the war early, and, four months later, found out she was pregnant when she fainted during an event, which shocked her. She considered for a while terminating the pregnancy, but every doctor she went to advised her against it due to its advance, and that she'd definitely die as well. She decided to have the baby, and on the 15th of August 1917, she gave birth to her son, Griffin Oren Lovette.

Friends: Viscountess Primrose Somerset, Countess of Harrendale

Second cousin of her mother, when she heard that Corrine was having trouble, she sent her men to retrieve Corrine and gave her a nice house within her estate's territory and provided her protection.

She helped her fight her in-laws from taking her child from her, and won the case. Griffin grew up with her children and was treated equally to her children to the point where Corrine made her godmother of the child. Both women remained good, close friends.

Rivals: Josephine Brume (and the whole bunch tbh)

Cory never once heard good things of Josephine, and when she came into her life to try take her child from her just because he was Mack's, she instantly hated her.

Both women clashed and argued a lot, and Cory, backed by Primrose, prepared a case against her and went to the Brume mansion to threaten to take them to court if they were really hell-bent on taking her boy from her.

Unfortunately (or not...) Josephine's husband also passed away, and the remaining Brumes gave up, promising Corrine to never reach out to her or her child and, while she regretted that she had to die for her in-laws to see reason, she wasn't saddened by his death, no matter how cruel others would think she was when reacting to her in-law's death.

Trivia

One time, she fell in love with a deaf boy who lived in her village, so she learned ESL to declare her love to him. They dated from ages 14 to 17 when he moved to the US.

She can speak five languages which she learned in St. Paul's: English, Spanish, French, German and Welsh

She's autodidact, which means that she taught herself math, biology, arithmetic, physics, geography and to man some woodwork, as well as tarot and can understand by ear twelve languages: Mandarin, Russian, Danish, Greek, Portuguese, Basque, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Japanese and Kurdish

During the war, she taught herself Braille and taught soldiers who had been blinded the language

She used to practise ballet and is a sportswoman, and when she isn't inventing something new, she loves to practise sports, and taught her son how to play football and quidditch

She loves expensive lingerie, and likes to treat herself to a new one from time to time

She has an IQ of 183, which makes her a genius of the era

When Griffin was a baby, she discovered that drawings soothed him, so taught herself how to draw properly to soothe his cries and even make him laugh

Before he went into Hogwarts, she taught him wizarding and muggle history, geography, how to use a broom, some basic spells and how to duel and fight should the blood purists give him trouble

Speaking of fighting, now being a single mom, taught herself Suffragitsu, Muay Thai and reached brown belt in Judo

She reads approximately 78 books and 120 essays per year, even in her old age

She loves the theater and knows most plays by heart, and always takes Griffin every first Sunday of the month to the hottest play of the season

Is this soft spot obvious to others? It's not obvious at all and Sydney is the only one to see through him. (Well Knusper might.)

Greatest vulnerability or weakness: He thinks it's using his heart and not his head. But really his weakness is his own fear and anxiety. For the longest of time he did as he was told out of fear and later he still panics easily.

Hometown: Berlin, Germany

Type of childhood: Alexej's mother died when he was born. His father was strict and raised him to respect his values rather than finding his own ones. He had a mongrel dog before starting school, whom he loved very much. His father was wealthy so he got used to having luxurious things around him. From early on Alexej was raised to despise the muggle-community and he didn't see muggleborns as part of the Wizarding community. Religion: Not religious

Occupation: Worked for German Ministry of Magic as an auror but was secretly part of the AM movement. During the start of the war Alexej was part of the German Army still working for the Ministry and AM. After leaving AM he joined TOWER and worked with them in hopes of helping Lunas Avery out of the movement's control. After leaving TOWER Alexej was hired by the British Ministry of Magic because of his knowledge and actions against TOWER. After the war he cut his connections to the Ministry and started a career as a freelance artist.

Just like a wizard doesn’t have to be a pure-blood to be great, a dog doesn’t have to a purebred to be your best friend. While a mongrel’s ancestry might be a mystery, they tend to be intelligent, energetic, and good-natured. Your mongrel dog Patronus will be loyal and friendly toward you but fierce against any Dementor that seeks to harm you. Their scrappy nature makes them a perfect partner in any situation. *Author's note, I find this patronus so ironic but fitting!* Patronus Memory: Spending time with his friends in Durmstrang and having fun. Relationship with him: As a child Alexej wanted to please his father and followed his orders and wishes. During his Durmstrang years Anton didn't think his son was strong enough and wasn't pleased with the close friendship he had with Fiete. He started to see Alexej as a weak link which the teenager desperately wanted to prove wrong.

Anton wasn't a very strict or serious father but rather bantered with his son and complimented his success if he saw such. Alexej liked spending time with his father despite wanting to prove himself worthy and the two were close in his youth. After graduating, Alexej joined the AM movement that worked in Germany under Grindelwald's alliance. His father was secret supporter of the movement but being a politician he had to ensure that his name stayed out of it, so Alexej started using his mother's last name. After Alexej killed Anton's friend Adalmar Nachtnebel in 1916, he didn't contact his father until the end of the year. His father was pleased that Alexej had joined TOWER but later found out that he didn't actually value this alliance either. Anton was disappointed and Alexej didn't contact his father after the war. Later Anton became the German Minister for Magic but claimed that his son had died during the war.

The two spend time together and get to know each other a little but eventually Alexej leaves for his own adventures. His father, Adalmar Nachtnebel, Ren Godfrey and the whole of TOWER, The whole of AM, Grindelwald's Allience, and some of the students of Durmstang. Adalmar Nachtnebel: Nachtnebel was a member of the AM and Alexej's father's good friend. Nachtnebel put a lot of pressure on Alexej and tried to shape him into a ruthless soldier. Alexej never liked him and after he was forced into crimes against the muggle community under Nachtnebel's command, he started to resent him. When Sydney Barlow escaped from the AM base after being taken there as a prisoner, Nachtnebel commanded Alexej to shoot him after the two found him from a near by forest. Alexej chose to shoot him instead.

Ren Godfrey: Alexej joined TOWER (Transnational Order of Wizards Exposure Rights) after leaving AM. Ren Godfrey was one of the founding members of the said group of dark wizards. Alexej claimed to be loyal to TOWER but he actually joined because of Lunas Avery. His real goal was to get Lunas out of the blackmailing situation he had going on with Ren. Eventually Ren finds out the truth about Alexejs true alliance but he has more anger towards Lunas than Alexej.

During his studies in Durmstrang, Alexej was close friends with Klara, Kateryna and Fiete. Klara, Kateryna and Alexej all came from similar backgrounds and shared the same type of values. Fiete was different, being a half blood and coming from a less wealthy background. He didn't have strong opinions against muggleborns and he was much kinder than Alexej. Still he became his closest friend who he secretly developed feelings for. The three would often claim that Fiete was a pureblood to avoid controversy among other students. This bothered Fiete, but loving his friends he let them keep their perfect picture. The group would often pair up during balls and they spent holiday breaks together being practically inseparable.

During his seventh year Alexej managed to gain few enemies in school after sharing information he was not suppose to. This lead to the boys attacking him and Fiete while the girls watched trying to stop it from happening. The fight ended with Fiete's death. After his passing away it was hard for the group to spend time together as just a trio and it took a long time for them to get close again. Alexej meets Lunas when he's posing undercover as an auror to snoop details of the ministry's agenda for the war. They became good friends and Lunas is a big reason why Alexej starts to question his beliefs. Eventually Lunas finds out his true intentions and Alexej has to flee and go back to his AM group. After Alexej leaves the allience he decides to find Lunas again and because of this he ends up joining TOWER. His true intentions are to help Lunas and possibly gain pardon by doing so.

Ione and Alexej became friends when Ione was visiting Lunas in Berlin. They have similar struggles and get along well. They have a playful sibling like relationship. He wants to protect her.

Ares worked for TOWER at the same time Alexej was there. They had few missions together and Alexej admired Ares's way of handling the situation which was different from the other members of the group. Alexej wasn't aware that Ares was actually an auror working for the ministry.

Zedric Faust: Zedric and Alexej went to Durmstrang at the same time but they were not friends. Alexej thought that Zedric was annoying. Though he was polite to Zedric, he called him Kartoffel (potato) behind his back. After graduating Zedric and Alexej both joined AM and were often paired up together from Zedric's request. Usually Alexej did all the work while Zedric took the credit. After the war Alexej ended up defending Zedric and telling the truth about him not taking much part on the actual things that AM did and being more talk than action. While he never liked Zedric, he didn't feel that the man deserved the worst kind of sentence. The two found mutual respect for each other for surviving their youth and became actual friends.

Colm O'Shea @unfortunate-arrow Alexej got to know Colm through his friend Ione. The two were also in the same company. After the war Alexej stayed good friends with the couple. Alexej was a regular guest to their house.

Linus Sullivan @unfortunate-arrow Linus and Sydney were friends during the war and shared the same company that Alexej was in. He got to know Linus after getting closer with Sydney and the two stayed friends.

Maritza Krum Alexej and Maritza attended Durmstrang at the same time but were not friends. He met her again through his connections with the British Ministry while she was working for the French Ministry of Magic. Later he got to know her also as Linus's wife.

2023 Wishlist

This is just a bunch of ideas for threads that I’d love to explore or further explore, so if anything sounds half decent or you’d be interested in something, let me know. I’m more than happy to tweak things to fit other people’s muses and preferences to suit. 

Would definitely love more threads with pre-WWI Jonathan and someone’s muse becoming friends / close eventually leading to them reuniting after the events of Vampyr in which Jonathan is now an Ekon. 

I have a basic verse for the zombie / apocalypse genre, stuff along the lines of the Walking Dead, Resident Evil, Z Nation, Black Summer, the Last of Us, etc where Jonathan travels and offers his medical assistance to those who need it while also having to deal with the steep decrease of blood to sustain himself. I should probably mention that I haven’t seen TLOU show yet but I do plan to once all the episodes are available, I’m still happy to write from it, and if there’s anything I need to know that differs from the games, just let me know. ^_^ ( I do also have Roanoke Gaming’s video on the new Ophiocordyceps Infection saved in my watch later playlist so I can know the details of it better )

This one’s pretty simple, but Jonathan becoming close to someone and later having to admit that he’s an Ekon.

Would love more situations where Jonathan meets hunters / vampire hunters.

Him meeting other species, whether it’s other variants of vampire, or other beings such as werewolves, witches etc. Although only vampires are covered in Vampyr, I do go with the idea that there’s other stuff out there too.

Shipping with Jonathan, while he’s not really someone who would fleetingly jump into bed with a stranger, he’s definitely still shippable. He does put his studies and later his work first so a relationship wouldn’t be the first thing on his mind, especially as he doesn’t believe he deserves to be loved after becoming an Ekon, but this doesn’t mean it’s a big no-go.  

I do also have an HP verse where Jonathan was in Ravenclaw and later after becoming an Ekon teaches muggle studies at Hogwarts. More info here.

Time travel shenanigans is also something I love, or even just exploring Jonathan in other eras since he’s immortal and can naturally be set anywhere from 1918 onwards.

Robot, Sarmak Fighting Machine

[With a property that has been adapted as frequently as The World of the Worlds, adaptation drift sets in. And one of the biggest changes from the original to modern versions is the invincibility of the fighting machines. In 1953′s film adaptation, a Martian saucer could withstand a direct hit from an atomic bomb, which seems to have set the tone for future versions. But in the original book, a tripod can be taken out with mortars and Maxim guns. It’s just that they’re faster than 1890s British artillery and come in numbers sufficient to wipe out an army before the humans can successfully retaliate. So I wanted my version of the fighting machine to be strong and dangerous, but not overwhelmingly so. The (buckwild, highly recommended) Pathfinder module Rasputin Must Die! pits 13th level characters against WWI era weapons and expects them to survive but be challenged by the experience, so that was the CR range I went with.]

Robot, Sarmak Fighting Machine CR 14 N Construct This metal giant stands on three long, spindly legs, its main body held higher than a building. Said body has a hooded structure overlooking an array of lights and sensors. A cluster of snaking tentacles hangs from the lower side of the body, capable of extending and retracting.

The sarmak fighting machine, sometimes referred to simply as a tripod, is the cornerstone of sarmak colonial warfare. When not being piloted, they are inert metal, but when a sarmak is at the controls, it is a deadly force more than a match for an entire army. Their primary weapons are black smoke, a lethal chemical cloud, and beams of deadly heat capable of incinerating creatures and lighting buildings on fire. When not using these weapons (such as when the heat ray is recharging), the fighting machines simply trample over foes, or grab them in their tentacles and fling them great distances.

Although a single sarmak fighting machine is a devastating enemy, they typically travel in groups. Sarmaks are skilled tacticians—they coordinate the firing of their heat rays to ensure that the timing of attacks is as fast as possible, and catch particularly fortified positions in the crossfire of beams from different angles. Although the fighting machines themselves are incredibly durable, their occupants are still flaccid and ill-adapted to high gravity environments. If an adventurer can reach the cockpit and break it open, dispatching the sarmak inside is much easier than completely destroying the tripod.

Treat this as a ranged attack made with a thrown weapon with a range increment of 40 feet. A flung create takes damage as if falling, and if it hits another creature, both it and the creature it hits take damage based on the flung creature’s size and the sarmak’s Strength bonus (2d6+10 for a Medium creature; increase or decrease the damage by one die per size category) Heat Ray (Ex) As a standard action, a sarmak fighting machine can release a beam of incredible heat. All creatures in a 200-foot line take 14d6 points of fire damage (Ref DC 22 half). Creatures that fail the save take 2d6 points of burn damage each round until the flames are extinguished. A sarmak fighting machine can use its heat ray once every 1d4 rounds. The save DC is Constitution based and includes a +2 racial bonus. Piloted (Ex) A sarmak fighting machine is not an independent creature. In order to function, it must be piloted. The pilot’s actions translate to those of the fighting machine (standard, full round, move, etc.). A sarmak can pilot a fighting machine without making skill checks, but another creature must succeed a DC 34 Knowledge (engineering) check in order to understand the controls. Most sarmak fighting machines are biolocked and require additional checks to be used by non sarmak creatures. The cockpit of a sarmak fighting machine can fit one sarmak or other Large creature, and up to four Medium sized creatures without penalty. A creature inside the closed cockpit is treated as having total cover. The hatch can be opened or closed from the inside as a standard action. Breaking into the cockpit requires a DC 34 Disable Device check, and smashing the cockpit open is treated as a sunder attempt (hardness 10, 19 hp). The cockpit is 100 feet in the air, so performing these actions cannot typically be done from ground level. Reinforced (Ex) A sarmak fighting machine gains a +3 resistance bonus on all saving throws. She began to question her parents' values as a teenager but only truly broke out of the mold after graduation. Growing up, Klara is guarded, haughty, cold, and proud. She knows her value exactly, and doesn't question many things in her life. The HP Society/Ton AU (The Season?)

I figured I should probably give this quickly growing beastie a working name. Or something. I have no idea what to call this. But, you know, more notes on the subject! I'll try to remember to use cuts, as well, because these tend to go long.

The Voldemort Problem

After Harry's second year, Voldemort is no longer a problem. The Horcruxes that are left (the other 5 met with hilarious and completely predictable accidents, such as very reliable house elves shunting the thing that felt oogy into the fiendfyre incinerator), Harry and the diary, are both destroyed. Harry destroys the diary and the basilisk venom burned the other out of him. It's why Fawkes waited to cry on his wound.

Mostly, I want Voldemort gone so that the main issue anyine has to deal with can be scheming and social climbing arseholes. I also don't want to have things happen like half the purebloods disappear due to a Voldygram during Mrs. Aldfield's Whist Party, leaving her with unbalanced tables. Can you imagine? It would be awful. She spent so long figuring out well-balanced tables where bloodshed is unlikely to occur.

On the other hand, Pettigrew having to mainain Voldemort's social calendar so he doesn't schedule an attack on, for example, the same evening as the Annual Malfoy Garden Party and Evening Revel is objectively hilarious. Especially if he muffs it and half the Death Eaters disappear before supper at the Dalrymple's Ball. (Suddenly many fewer gentlefolk to lead people in to supper? The horror! The social shame!!!)

Go with your heart and what would be most entertaining to you. Dumbledore having to be polite all evening to His Grace, Duke Slytherin while biting his tongue abour Voldemort would also be funny.

The Era for Inspiration

Honestly, I'm pulling bits and pieces from the Georgian through Edwardian periods. It's an ahistorical mishmash. If you have a specific era you prefer, feel free to run with it.

Since there are no non-magical folk in the WW (seven inches to the left), we can use our imaginations. Using a mid-Victorian map of England might work best for this.

Involvement with the Non-Magical World

Until just before WWI, there was more crossover. Once the reigning King or Queen became more figurehead than ruling monarch, that involvement faded. It initially devolved onto the PM, but by the 90s that meant a quick meeting when a new PM or Minister came to power and ignoring each other unless there was a problem. Slowly, the points of entry to the WW were closed off until they were mostly found only in large cities. With the number of surveillance devices in the non-mahical world, witches and wizards stick to their own.

The Wizarding Aristocracy

This is how I'm mapping real titles to the various levels of Family in the WW.

I can't decide if I want the Malfoys to be titled or to be vicious social climbers. Narcissa would likely have the title of Lady from birth, but Lucius...there's a reason he basically Grimma Wormtongues his way to power and I kind of don't want there to be a big title attached to the Malfoy family. Father: Peter St. James

A well-known businessman, he seemed at first like the perfect husband and father... until Conrad followed him one night that he was out with friends to find him with another family outside the city in a small village. He was shocked and hurt, and immediately told his mother, who then dumped him on the spot and talked to the other woman, who was not aware. Things got worse when they found out she was a niece of the governor. The scandal went out when Conrad was just 19, and ran away to England, where he finished his degree in photography and journalism.

After finding out about the affair, in a fit of rage, challenged his father to a duel. However, his father knew nothing and, while throwing random spells he had heard from his wife, hit him in the face with a spell, which reduced his eyesight, which made him wear glasses for reading and studying

After the scandal was uncovered, Conrad locked himself in a room and started reading law books, and soon found loopholes on where and how to bend the law to his will

After his parents divorced, he sought revenge by disguising himself as a friend of his that helped with the affair and threw him off the bridge and ran away shortly after

Despite looking shy and reserved, he has a wild side where he can be pretty bold and daring, and can manipulate and lie his way through with hardly any scruples

last december i created my character kit enfield and me and @gaygryffindorgal decided that he and ares gaunt's story will take place during the first world war. we wanted to explore the war from the wizard perspective and the more we thought of our characters the more ideas we started to get and with the help of @cursed-herbalist & @magicallymalted a new era was born. now it's been around 9 months and so many others have embraced our story and become part of it and i'm amazed. i decided to make a video that is about the whole era and include as many characters as i possibly could!

Father: Ephraim Cornelius Lovell [deceased, 1858-1913]

Born in late 1858, Ephraim Lovell was the eldest and only child of Cornelius and Jemima Lovell to survive to adulthood. Ephraim had a good and mostly happy early childhood, but everything changed when he went away to school at the age of thirteen. Life was tough at school, and by the time he graduated, Ephriam had become an only child. His four siblings had all contracted different illnesses and passed away. This left a deep mark on Ephraim, and while he had already begun to take after his father’s philandering ways, he fell deeper into them. Even marrying Ellen Blackmore at the age of 28 wasn’t enough to curb Ephraim’s philandering ways. His first child and only child with Ellen, Eugene Silas Lovell, was born in 1887. Ellen died three years after their son was born and Ephraim did mourn his first wife. Two years later, Ephraim married his second wife, Martha Burke. They had a daughter shortly after, whom they named Ophelia Florence Lovell. Shortly after Ophelia’s birth, Ephraim went to the United States for his merchant business. It was there that he met the young and innocent Bertha Sullivan, whom he was quickly taken with. Like many previous affairs, Ephraim hid his marriage and won Bertha’s affections. They carried on an affair for two months before Ephraim returned to London. He didn’t know that he had left Bertha pregnant or that he would have a second son. Of course, that was kinda par for the course with Ephraim. It was likely that he had fathered multiple children. Ephraim died in 1913 after suffering a fall. He only ever knew two of his children. 

Linus never knew his father. In fact, he didn’t even know his father’s name until he met Eugene and Ophelia and they discovered they were half-siblings. Unfortunately, by that point, Ephraim had been dead for a few years and Linus never had the opportunity to meet the man. However, given Eugene’s and Ophelia’s summations of the man, Linus wasn’t sure if he actually wanted to know Ephraim. 

Mother: Bertha Mary Sullivan [deceased, 1874-1906]

Born in January of 1874, Bertha Sullivan was the eldest child of Mary and Lewis Sullivan and the twin sister of Frank. She had a pretty good childhood, although her parents passed away when she and Frank were fifteen. They lived alone from that point, both working to make ends meet. Four years later, Bertha stumbled upon British businessman Ephraim Lovell and she began a quiet affair with the man. He gave her a lot of hope for marriage, but in April of 1893, he returned to England. Bertha was left heartbroken… and pregnant. Desperate to leave New York City and her recognition there, Bertha left the city for Buffalo, New York with Frank joining her two years later. Her son, Linus Matthew, was born on November 26, 1893 and Bertha raised her boy in Buffalo. She loved that boy and did everything that she could to make sure that he never had to work before the age of 18. Unfortunately, that ideal failed as Bertha fell ill with influenza in February of 1906 which then turned into pneumonia. She died in March of 1906, when her son was twelve. 

Linus had a good relationship with his mother. They were close, especially given that a lot of the time it was just the two of them (and Uncle Frank most of the time too). He loved her a lot. Linus was heartbroken when she died and he spends a lot of time wishing that he could turn to her (or even Uncle Frank).

Uncle: Francis Michael “Frank” Sullivan [deceased, 1874-1906]

Born in January of 1874, Frank Sullivan was the youngest child of Mary and Lewis Sullivan and the twin brother of Bertha. Like his sister, Frank got his first job at the age of 15. He started as a newsie, before finding work in a factory. He wasn’t a fan of Bertha’s clandestine relationship with some older British businessman and after learning that Ephraim Lovell had abandoned and impregnated Bertha, Frank threatened to go find the man. Bertha told him that it didn’t matter and shortly after she left New York City. Frank remained in the city for two years, before following his sister (and nephew) north to Buffalo. He moved in with Bertha and Linus and did his best to help with his nephew. Frank indulged the young boy, as much as he could. He took Linus to the Pan American Exposition in 1901 and even hoped that his nephew would get to shake the hand of the President. Eventually times grew hard on Frank, and in 1905, he decided that it was time to journey out west and find a fortune. This venture failed and Frank died in the April 1906 San Francisco earthquake, only a month after his sister had died from influenza-induced pneumonia. 

Linus had a good relationship with his uncle. For much of his childhood, Frank was the main male influence in his life and helped to shape Linus’s view of masculinity. He had a close relationship with Uncle Frank as well, adoring the man. Linus was heartbroken to learn of Uncle Frank’s sudden death, mixed with some of the shock of the earthquake. 

Half-brother: Eugene Silas Lovell [1887-1918]

Ephraim Lovell’s son with his first wife, Ellen, Eugene was born on January 24, 1887. His mother passed away when he was three and two years later, his father remarried. Eugene was mostly raised by nannies, staff, and occasionally, his step-mother. He attended boarding school, and did not have magic. His childhood was fairly lonely and Eugene became determined to be a different, better man than his father. When war erupted in 1914, Eugene joined the army and by his death in 1918, he had achieved the rank of sergeant major. Eugene was killed in 1918 in an explosion and some exposure to mustard gas. However, he was able to meet his brother.

Linus had never expected to learn that he has siblings and was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had a brother. Eugene, on the other hand, was not impressed nor surprised to learn that his father had fathered a third child. It took a little while for the two to warm up to one another, but they exchanged letters and greetings throughout the war, up to Eugene’s 1918 death.

Ephraim Lovell’s daughter with his second wife, Martha, Ophelia was born on December 9, 1892. She grew up alongside her brother, Eugene, and was mostly raised by her mother, nannies, and other staff. She spent very little time with her father, who was a workaholic who had multiple affairs throughout her childhood. Ophelia was accepted into Hogwarts when she was eleven and she was sorted into Slytherin, where she ended up becoming a prefect and headgirl. After Hogwarts, Ophelia began working as a journalist for the Daily Prophet. In 1914, when World War I broke out and Eugene joined the army, she decided to join a small coalition of wizarding journalists who were determined to report on the affairs of the wizarding world during the war. It was there that Ophelia discovered that she had another brother. 

Linus never expected to learn that he had a sister, but he was grateful to meet Ophelia. They were never extremely close, but it was nice to know there was someone else in the world, especially after the war. Linus liked his sister, she was quite different from him, but they got along quite well.

⤷ Linus first saw Maritza Krum when he arrived in France in 1915. A year later, he saw her once again, this time during the Battle of Somme. A few months later, while on a 10-day leave in Paris, Linus runs into Maritza. As it turns out, most of Linus’s leave is spent getting to know Maritza and possibly, kinda falling into something that could turn into love. Before he returns to the Front, Maritza gives him her necklace and makes him promise to return it to her after the war. Throughout the war, Linus and Maritza exchange letters. They share a few moments in-person here and there, throughout the war, before officially reuniting in November of 1918. They eventually married on March 4, 1919.

Childhood: 

Linus Matthew Sullivan, born November 26, 1893, was the only child of Bertha Sullivan and Ephraim Lovell, although he never knew his father. Therefore, he was raised primarily by his unmarried mother. When he was two, his uncle Frank joined Linus and his mother in Buffalo. Uncle Frank became a permanent fixture in his life, mostly as the fun uncle which included taking his nephew to the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. Linus had a pretty good childhood before learning that he was a wizard. Sure, there were some weird things that happened, but the Sullivans mostly wrote them off. 

At the age of seven, on September 6, 1901, Linus attended the Pan-American Exposition with his uncle. His uncle, Frank, took him to shake hands with then-President William McKinley. What happened then would stick with Linus for years to follow. President McKinley was shot twice in the abdomen and Linus never got to shake the president’s hand.

The rest of Linus’s childhood was fairly quiet. His mother and uncle worked a lot, mostly to ensure that Linus never had to even think about going to work himself. It worked until their deaths in 1906. 

At the age of 11, Linus learned that he was a wizard, which came as a complete shock to the Sullivans.

Ilvermorny Years:

Upon starting at Ilvermorny, Linus was chosen by Wampus. It took him a while to become comfortable at Ilvermorny and he balked at some of the strictness of the American wizarding world. It seemed at odds with the values of no-maj America. Eventually he settled in, but much of his first year was disrupted by sudden changes to his life. 

In March of his first year, Linus was pulled out of charms class and informed that his mother had died of pneumonia. Less than a month later, Linus learned that his Uncle Frank was a victim of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.

Linus generally enjoyed his time at Ilvermorny. He ended up playing quodpot, although he generally kept to himself. During the summer, Linus worked as a newsie to make money and supplement the care that he was receiving in the orphanage. 

Adulthood:

After graduating from Ilvermorny, Linus continued his work as a newsie. He felt adrift, unsure of where to go or what to do. Thus, he stuck to what he was familiar with. Unfortunately, what he was familiar with led to multiple, continuous violations of Rappaport’s Law which forbade unnecessary contact between wizards and no-majs. Even after being fined, Linus continued to violate the law. His constant violations led to a hit wizard being assigned to his case in late 1914.

Feeling desperate, Linus made the decision to flee into Canada in the winter of 1915 and he made an uncharacteristically impulsive decision to join the army. He entered the war as a private and was sent a few months in boot camp. He was shipped out to the Western Front in June of the same year… which led to a first glimpse of his future wife, Maritza Krum. 

During the war, Linus generally kept his head down. He met his half-brother and sister during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. In late 1917, he ended up joining the company of Kit Enfield (@potionboy3) and was exposed to the wizarding culture of the British Isles. In addition, he had a confrontation with Ralph Myers, the hit wizard after him, in October of 1918. The confrontation occurred after Linus was hospitalized for a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. 

After the war, Linus marries Maritza Krum and they have two sons, Constantine and Malachi.

Old Age:

After retiring at the age of 96, Linus spends his time working on hobbies and taking some time for himself. 

Death: 

Linus passed away in his sleep at the age of 102 in 1996. He left behind a wide array of direct descendants.

Linus’s post-war trauma (PTSD) is defined by reliving his experiences in a very different way. In other words, Linus’s war memories are remembered in a way that paints himself in a fairly negative view. One example is believing that he did nothing to help a dying soldier when, in reality, he held the man’s hand until he died.

Every Christmas season, Bertha Sullivan paid for a photograph of her son. Sometimes they included her and Frank, but mostly, they were just Linus. He holds tightly to them, for his mother’s handwriting on the back.
