Why You Should Check It Out:

In canon, McGonagall is presented as stern, upright, doughty, and I wanted to explore a different side of her and subvert those canon-based expectationa a little while still (hopefully) keeping her recognizably in character. I wanted to know how she came to be the person we see in canon, so this story invents a rich backstory for her that is backstopped by explorations of class conflicts, the role of women in wizarding society, and types of love.

The story spans Minerva’s life from age 18 to 73 and is told from a variety of points-of-view, including canon characters from the Harry Potter universe and original characters. It complies with canon of the original seven Harry Potter novels, but it ignores extra-canon information from sources, such as Pottermore, revealed after the completion of the original series.

Untagged Fest 2023 just ended, run by the HPFC Discord server! This was my second time participating and I had just as much fun as I did last year. It's always a new experience reading a fic when it's first published with absolutely zero tags. Here are a 10 of my favorites (listed by title)!

💜 hollow hearts by @girl-with-goats [Teddy/Victoire, T, 7.0k] — Fabulous world-building, wonderful imagery, packed full of colorful metaphors and heartfelt emotions.

Surviving in the post-apocalyptic, totalitarian world where emotions are banned from adults is not an easy feat. Victoire Weasley tries to navigate it and not lose herself in the process, all while falling in love with her best friend, Teddy Lupin.

💜 Just a Minerva in Time by @bluestringpudding [Hermione/Minerva, G, 6.4k] — Time travel, BAMF young Minerva, intrigue, romance! This fic has everything!

Hermione is going to need to remember how she got there, if she wants to go back.

💜 Master of None by @nanneramma [Cormac/Severus, G, 5.5k] — Hilarious and made me cry tears of joy. A masterpiece in comedy. Severus has finally met his match in himbo (and buff!) Cormac.

Severus tries new things, and meets someone unexpected.

💜 mephistopheles by @hang-the-deejay [Hermione/Harry, E, 6.4k] — Mind the tags!! Includes rape/non-con!! This is dirty, dark, and CRAZY GOOD. A dead dove fic that had me at the edge of my seat and yelling into the abyss (or in the Discord server).

💜 of all the gin joints by @northernroyal [Hermione/Dean, E, 2.2k] — HOT SMUT IN YOUR AREA!!! I am in love with this Dean. He is the new loml.

💜 Oh, to be alone with you by @min1nova [Bellatrix/Luna, M, 3.3k] — The prose is stunning. Bellaluna is such an underrated ship and the author made me fall in love with them. Such a fantastical fairy tale AU.

Her grey-scale painted lips, darker than the billowing curls and sharper than her teeth, never turn down. They are lighter than the oily drip down her temples, glittering in her hair. She is always smiling. It surely is a marvel, to behold the presence of the Mad Queen. 

💜 Through the Middlegame by @sandervansunshine [Astoria & Peter, T, 6.6k] — One of my absolute favorite portrayals of Peter I have ever read. The dialogue, the characters, the angst. I want to tattoo this fic directly onto my brain. Perhaps my new fav fic of the year!

💜 Unspeakable Acts by @ladyvoldywrites [Rufus/Dolores, M, 4.8k]— A wild pairing with a wild premise! The banter is perfect. This fic converted me to a Dolores lover and I didn't think that was possible.

The death of a child. A stolen Time-Turner. In an effort to solve this heinous act, an unlikely duo falsify a betrothal to gain entry into an underground crime ring.

💜 who lives in the castle? by @luxuriousmalfoy [Cho & Harry, M, 2.5k] — The ambience, the vibes!! I loved the mystery and the world-building. And of course, I love my girl Cho.

A century after the abrupt disappearance of magic, they seek out the place they hope to find it again—only to find themselves wondering if it was worth the cost. Cho and Harry have one question. Who lives in the castle?

💜 You're So Vane by @patriceavril [Angelina/Romilda, T, 6.8k] — The perfect romcom fic. Romilda is such a hoot, and her antics are so on brand. If this was turned into a movie, I'd be the first one at the theater.

Romilda is determined to seduce her nephew’s Quidditch instructor, even if she has to get a bit creative.

Malfoy licked his lips. They were pink and thin but not chapped. In fact they looked quite soft. Harry stared for entirely too long, lost in his own thoughts.

“Do you want to get out of here?”

“What?”

Malfoy looked him straight in the eyes. “Do you want to leave with me?”

Harry shuddered. It almost sounded as if Malfoy was propositioning him. “Um. Err. What about Hermione?”

“The party is over, Potter. I’m sure Granger’s about two seconds away from plunging face-first into her gigantic glass of wine.”

“Well …”

Malfoy was still looking at him, not shying away. He seemed determined. “Let’s get out of here. Come on.” He grabbed Harry’s hand.

A few minutes later, they stood in Malfoy’s flat overlooking the Thames. The city glittered below them.

“Would you like a drink?” Malfoy asked, shadows overtaking him.

“Yes.”

Malfoy made them refreshing brambles with blackberry liqueur. Harry was halfway through his drink before he finally took a seat. The settee was very posh. Malfoy joined him, sitting entirely too close.

It took a second bramble for Harry to slur, “I thought you were fucking Hermione.”

Malfoy’s eyes were dark and his cheeks were pink. He threw his blond head back and laughed. “No, you idiot. I don’t like fanny.”

This made Harry frown. “What’s there not to like?”

Malfoy frowned too as he chewed on a bit of crushed ice. “It’s all right, I suppose, but there are other things I like far more.”

“Like what?”

Then Malfoy set aside his drink and took Harry’s face in his hands.

“What are you doing?” Harry asked, head spinning.

“This.” Malfoy kissed him.

Harry wished he could say he was shocked, but he wasn’t. Malfoy hadn’t asked him for a drink, not really. He had asked him if he was willing to cheat on his wife while she was in Brazil.

“I’ve never done this before,” Harry gasped as Malfoy opened his mouth on his neck.

“Don’t worry, I’ll show you everything,” Malfoy said, his hand now between Harry’s legs, squeezing. “Everything.”

More Ginsy art ftw! Pansy and Ginny were so lovely to draw in their own ways, and y'all know how I feel when it comes to drawing hair. Loved drawing their hair with wispy or messy strands! And yes, they both really did bite into something juicy, if you know what I mean. 😉 And adding in pop colours and tropical vibes while still keeping things soft..it's a little different than how I usually approach drawing, but the first day of summer is tomorrow, so what a great tribute to that! The Slimy Cave Undead Theater Company (SCUTC, pronounced stuck)’s first fully staged production opened as a resounding success. The author builds their tale carefully and respectfully, and perfectly captures Severus's progress from terror and bewilderment, through malaise, and then to (grudging) acceptance. The details of the therapy he undergoes to get there are perfectly drawn.

misty morning comes again (Draco/Ron, 4.5k, M) Every morning without snow on the ground or rain that turned the land into a slip and slide of mud and wet grass, Ron ran the property with his misfit herd of barnyard animals close behind him. The thrilling tease of watching Ron's solid, sweat-glistening body do its lap around the misty morning pond was just about the only thing that could get Draco willingly out of bed so soon after the summer sun rose. Barn chores and animal butts certainly weren't going to do it.

No capacity for feelings (Draco/Harry, 2.9k, T) Draco's Basilisk might or might not be depressed. Whatever the case, he would never ask Harry Potter for help.

Of Magical Beings Being - Magical (Draco/Harry, 30k, E)Out of the blue, Potter's letter says: I need your help. And Draco, ever a fool, goes. Cue magical houses, fluffy Beings with a sweet tooth, mutual pining level: infinity, and truly outrageous amounts of tea.

Peacocks of the Bride(groom) (Draco/Harry, 7k, T) The Big Day is here! Draco and Harry are finally getting hitched. Will the wedding be a smashing success or will peacock-induced chaos ensue? (It’s the latter, for sure)

Slithering up the garden path (Draco/Harry, 1.4k, G) Draco just wants to read in the garden. He's not sure why there are so many snakes around.

Sun Shower (Draco/Harry, 5.9k, T) Each afternoon, Harry and his cat lounge in their sitting room, make an elaborate snack, and then head out for a walk. When they run into a certain tall, pale-haired man and his scruffy dog, they find their routine shifting.

the strays (Draco/Harry, 13.8k, T) Draco befriends stray animals in his back garden, unknowing that one of them is actually an animagus.

Two cute foxes, one embarrassing rant (Harry/Fred/George, 1k, G) Fred and George needed a role of their own, even considering how they were Fred & George and not Fred and George. And, if no one had made the effort to recognize them, to distinguish them, they would have managed to be seen and noticed. At least that was his due to them. This didn't mean they wouldn't want to be appreciated for who they were.

Waiting for the Moon to Rise (Draco/Harry, 8.9, E) When Harry and Draco move into Grimmauld Place straight out of Hogwarts, the last person they expect to find taking up residence is Bill ‘divorced, dishevelled, and dangerous’ Weasley. But what if their new, furry little problem is the help they need to finally bring them closer? Stranger things have happened, Draco supposes.

Wings and Slings (Draco/Harry, 24k, T) After the war, Draco Malfoy decides to turn over a new leaf and in doing so, opens an animal sanctuary for sick and homeless magical creatures. Everything is going well, until he is given a feral herd of hippogriffs and has to ask for outside help to be able to get anywhere near them. Only, it's the very last person he would have asked for help from.
