Your Personal Power: 5 Keys to Ultimate Resilience
Do you remember when you were a child, and a bully called you a name or made fun of you? If you answered “I am rubber, and you are glue. What you say bounces off of me and sticks to you,” your answer personified how resilience is the cornerstone of personal power. Resilience, or the ability to bounce back from difficulties, is the basis for creating your own personal space, view, and power. Your personal power depends on how resilient you are. Life coaches teach that building resilience grows your personal power to cope with challenges and obstacles. Psychologists have studied the link between resilience and personal power. They’ve determined that these key aspects of resilience help support personal power: Focusing on the Present Supports Faith in YourselfLearning from Your Failures Supports Self-AcceptancePositive Thinking Supports Courage in Your PrinciplesStress Management Supports Being YourselfChanged Perspective Supports Choosing Your Response Focusing on the Present: Here lies your personal power Resilience requires focusing on the present. How a person copes with challenges builds their resilience for future ones. Every resilient person should say thank you to their past challenges because they made the person they are today. Each time you face a challenge, you have the opportunity to learn, grow, and change. Psychologists believe that when you successfully navigate a challenge, you build resilience to face another challenge later. Even failure can help build resilience if you learn from it. Here are the gifts that past challenges offer to help build resistance: ControlPlansGoalsCommitmentActionPast SuccessSupport SystemHumorPatience Control Past challenges teach valuable lessons about control. To succeed, you must learn the difference between what you can control and what you can’t. When you understand that you control your actions and reactions, you are building the foundation of resilience. Knowing what you can control helps you focus on how to cope with challenges throughout life. Plans Reaching a goal requires planning. You may need to organize your time, workspace, or add to your education. When faced with a challenge, having a plan allows you to work toward your goals, regardless of distractions. In order to successfully bounce back from the difficulties, we face in life, we have to be armed with the right attitude. Possessing a ‘Yes I Can’ attitude increases our likelihood of success when we face adversity and increases the likelihood of us responding to adversity in a healthy manner. Thus, mastering this attitude as a facet of resilience improves our overall resilience significantly. The following outlines several key elements that aid in the development of a ‘Yes I Can’ attitude. Optimism and Resiliency On one hand, optimism is the ability to see the positives in the midst of a negative situation. On the other hand, optimism is also about the ability not to dwell on negatives that do exist. It’s not about ignoring negatives altogether, but rather paying attention to negatives that may be pertinent to the situation, while simultaneously not remaining focused on those negatives for a prolonged period of time.
