Strangers ch. 24

Genre: Fluff

“Miss Kim, I notice all of your sisters have partners,” Seokjin– no, Sung-Min– says, standing at an angle so he’s looking at you but facing the panel.
“They’re young,” you reply after glancing at the script. “I’m glad they get to dance.”
“Wouldn’t you like to dance as well?”
Having Kim Seokjin looking at you with such intense fascination is almost enough for a blush to rise to your cheeks. For as well as you know the members of Bangtan, you still spent years fantasizing about them. That sort of attraction doesn’t seem to be fading; for as much as you avoid thinking about any of them in that way, well... sometimes it’s hard. Or it would be, if you hadn’t spent the better part of the week teasing Seokjin for something or other in the groupchat.
“Are you offering, Mr. Moon Sung-Min?”
“I am, Miss Kim, and I hope you’ll oblige me.”
You smile, drawing out your words as though they should be obvious. “Perhaps the rules are different in the city, but here, class matters very much and whispers follow scandal. I am below you, sir.”
Sung-Min sets his jaw. “Whispers are nothing if I may have you in my arms, Miss Kim Ji-Woo.”
“And... cut! Good work, you two.” The man in the middle clicks his tongue “Hm...”
A pause. Whispers. Papers are shuffled, pens are clicked. The suits don’t look unhappy, per se, simply... unsatisfied. And it unnerves you.
“I-is something wrong...?” you ask cautiously.
“No, no, you’re both delivering your lines quite well. Uh...” the woman on the far left scratches her head. “Is anyone else feeling this?”
“The...” a younger man snaps his fingers. “The camaraderie?”
“Yes! Exactly.”
Jin rubs his shoulder. “What should we fix?”
“I don’t know what you can fix. Your behavior– perhaps you chatted on the Possible set? You seem too friendly, too familiar, I’m not feeling the chemistry...” the man in the middle drums his fingers on the table. “Let’s try another scene, give it some tension. Flip to page fifty-two.”
You take a deep breath. Lisa said you’d have this in the bag. If you lose your role in Moon Over the Sea for lack of romantic chemistry, you might as well quit acting altogether– this should be basic.
You face Jin again, his smooth skin and proportions and plush lips... and for some reason you can’t help but think of that time he tried to fit an entire peach in his mouth, he looked so impossibly silly with juice dripping down his chin and you and the other members were practically crying from laughing.
The humorous memory causes your lips to twitch in a half-smile before Jin has even spoken.
“I find you... a truly remarkable woman, Miss Kim.” He reaches up, his fingertips lightly tracing your jawline.
“I have been called remarkable often, Mr. Moon.” You tuck a strand of hair behind your ear. “Not until this moment have I felt as though I may believe it– I imagine that it would take something remarkable for my feelings to be reciprocated.”
Jin pauses. He grasps your free hand, pulling you closer. “Then... then you do feel an affection towards me?”
“Cut, cut!” The woman on the left stands as she speaks. “This is bizarre. I mean, actors do get chummy on set, but...”
“It’s like watching a romance scene between siblings,” the man on the right says bluntly. “Like watching Harry and Hermione kiss in Harry Potter.”
You gulp. “I, um...” you can feel tears welling up. Shit, shit. You realize suddenly just how disposable you are: They can fire you right now and you’ll be the only one that cares. Jin is worth so much more than you, you haven’t even signed a contract because it’s just an audition and you’re flopping–
You blink quickly, finding it difficult to breathe, you can’t breathe, every muscle in your body is tense and your heart–
No, no no. Not now, not here, you can’t have an episode here. You clutch at your chest in an attempt to calm your thunderous heartbeat but it does nothing, and the room feels so much smaller, your throat tightens, any worse and you might implode–
“Maybe if we could take a break?” Seokjin places a strong hand on your shoulder and begins steering you away. “I did speak to y/n briefly on the Possible set, I think it’s just the surprise of seeing each other again that’s throwing us off– totally my fault.”
“O-oh, well in that case...” One of the women rises. “Shall we take five?”
Murmurs of agreement echo among the panel– phones are pulled out, chairs lean back. The pressure in your chest eases when the five pairs of eyes are off you, but you’re far from alright.
“Hey, I need to make a call, I’ll be right back, okay?” Jin sits you down in the waiting room from earlier and returns to the audition room.
You nod, unblinking, still gasping for air. Why can’t you do this, the one thing you’re supposed to be good at? You’re so distracted that you don’t even think about eavesdropping on Jin’s call...
******
“Yoongi, hey, we need to talk.”
“Talk...about...what?”
Jin smiles at Yoongi’s familiar panting. “Are you at practice?”
“I can’t... get this step sequence... right,” Yoongi replies. “What’s up?”
“I need to ask a favor. I checked with our managers, they OK’d it–”
“What favor, hyung?”
Jin bites his lip. “I can’t take this role. In Moon Over the Sea.”
“What? Why not?”
“Y/n is playing my love interest and it’s not working out– she’s acting too chummy, the producers are picking up on it. They know I draw more crowds, so I think they want to get rid of her–”
Yoongi curses under his breath. “God fucking– but it’s not her fault!” He grips the phone so tightly his knuckles go white.
“I get it– and I know how much she wants this role.”
“How much she deserves it.”
Seokjin chuckles at the younger’s words. “You know we all love her, Yoongi-ah.”
A pause. “I know,” he says cautiously.
“So that’s why I want to do this for her.”
“Do what, hyung?”
******
You’re sniffling, wiping your eyes, having finally calmed down after your episode. You can breathe, you can think– you’re okay. Not that it matters, you muse humorlessly. I’ve lost the job anyways. And I quit working at the cafe– I’m never going to pay off the repairs, and tuition, and my rent...
The door opens and Jin pokes his head out. “How’re you feeling?”
“Good. Better. Thanks for getting me out of there,” you reply weakly.
“Yeah, I mean, I’ve lived with Yoongi long enough that I recognize the signs of–”
“They’re not panic attacks,” you insist, eyes narrowing.
Jin raises his hands in defense. “Whatever you say, y/n. Want to get back in there? I have an announcement to make.”
“Huh?”
“WHAT?” The man in the center stands, slamming his hands on the table. “Mr. Kim, you can’t do this, we have a contract–”
Jin waves his hand dismissively while you and the producers stare at him. “As per the contract, my company will find you a replacement. However, something came up and I can’t be in Moon Over the Sea.”
You’re standing by Jin’s side and staring at him openmouthed, absolutely flabbergasted. What the hell happened?
“If it’s a matter of money, we’d be willing to negotiate,” The woman on the left says calmly, although her voice is laced with desperation. “Kim Seokjin, you are the selling point of this drama. Without an idol of your caliber in this role–”
Seokjin’s lips curl into a smile. “I said I’d find you a replacement. In fact, I already have.”
As if on cue, the door behind you opens. You, Jin, and the five producers swivel around in time to see...
“Yoongi?”
He smiles on seeing you. “Surprise.”
“Suga here is a talented actor, and he’s drawing the same fanbase you’re trying to attract,” Jin says, addressing the producers. “He’s agreed to it and our management says they’d be willing to draw up a new contract.”
“What are you doing here?” you hiss at Yoongi while watching Jin pitch the sudden change.
“Hyung called in a favor,” Yoongi shrugs.
“But... but...” you were about to lose the job. Now what?
“If miss l/n and Mr. Min have spoken before, she may act the same way as well. It’s very unprofessional,” the man on the right harrumphs.
He thinks you’re unprofessional? You’re practically seeing red– here’s a chance to nail the audition for real, and he thinks you’ll flop again. Really?
You walk right up and plant your hands on the producers’ table. “I guarantee you, sir, should you allow me to try the scene again, you’ll find me a changed actress.” Your words are dripping with false kindness, and the man fidgets, eventually relenting.
“Very well. Somebody get Mr. Min a script! Page fifty-two, and... action!”
You and Yoongi are center stage in a room full of people, but as the scene begins you somehow get the sense that it’s just the two of you.
“I find you...” Yoongi takes a breath and for a second you feel the urge to say I’ve found you too. “...a truly remarkable woman, Miss Kim.”
“I have been called remarkable often, Mr. Moon.” You raise your hand to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear as per the script, but instead your breath catches as Yoongi reaches across to gently push your hair from your face. “N-not until this moment have I felt as though I may believe it.”
Who are you, really? You’re Kim Ji-Woo, a lower class girl in love with a wealthy and respectable man. It’s a hopeless romance, you’ve spent so long believing it to be unrequited–
Wait. You’re a fangirl. There’s no type of person in the world that’s better at unrequited love. You pause, taking yourself back to last year’s mindset, imagining that you’re you and in front of you is Min Yoongi, your idol, the man you’ve been hopelessly in love with for years. And you speak.
“I imagine that it would take... something remarkable for my feelings to be reciprocated.” You take a tiny step, just a step closer to him, and tilt your chin up. Your head is swirling with the scent of his cologne, and you blush at the thought of taking just one step closer.
“Then...” Yoongi doesn’t grab your hand like it says in the script, instead choosing to gently caress your burning cheek. His voice is laced with hope. “Then you do feel an... affection towards me?”
“Cut!”
A/N Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed this chapter of Strangers. I really appreciate all kinds of feedback, so please feel free to drop me an ask with your thoughts!
