#how to train your hogfly

So several years back, i was at a thrift store and they had a large photo scanner for i believe either $5 or less

Was missing a cord and we don't know if it worked, but since it was so cheap my mom let me get it to test at home

Well it did work, pretty damn well and I've used it for several things over the years

Now you may be wondering what this has to do with httyd

Well you see

i had put in a preorder for the new 20th edition of httyd, the one with the new story

It ended up arriving today, just a few hours ago

and as I have both a functioning scanner and a physical copy of how to train your hogfly, those 2 things combine into my being able to give you all a pdf copy of the new story

i have no idea if you’re still invested at all in the httyd books (i remember loooving your analysis posts from some years back but it has been a little while), but if you are, have you read the most recently published book (how to train your hogfly)? i would be very interested in hearing your thoughts about it, especially considering it’s been so long since the last book released

Ahhh thank you for the kind words! Yeah, totally, I still adore the HTTYD books, I just haven't felt the hankering to analyze material online (I'm off dancing with other hobbies). I sadly haven't picked up the new edition, so I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. But I plan to! It's wonderful we've gotten something new in the HTTYD book world.

So the Eastern Roman Empire IS mentioned in the books actually, as well as the fact that rest of Rome is in a decline during the events of the books

and theres a bit in book 4, at the bottom/side of the page that tells us how long ago this all took place

And at the Time of Publishing that would have put the date at 507 AD....

Which is Still AFTER the Fall of Rome in our world, but way earlier than the dates in the Library Book

Now, the book page doesn't say when the books were checked out, just 'Return on or Before' the printed date

Technically speaking, the meathead public library could have, knowing how Most Vikings are, they could just have a really really really long check out time

Like

Hundreds of years

Which imo, would be kinda hilarious

BUT if the Books take place that early, the end of the Viking Age would be in like 600 AD

Ya know, about, oh..... 4 and a half centuries before it ended here

So did the Romans last longer and the Vikings last way shorter?

Who knows, certainly not us, and probably not even Cressida but at least it gives us much to think about

Am i extremely grateful we got another httyd story via How to train your Hogfly? yes

Did i enjoy it? Very much so

Have i also had a whole post about some issues i have with it that ive been thinking about ever since i read it? Absolutely i have

to be clear, by issues, i don't mean "this was a bad story", i just mean "you can tell Cressida hasn't written for this world in a long time"

With the release of How to Train Your Hogfly, Cressida made the incredible decision to make Hiccup's Family Tree even more Complicated, this time with the inclusion of polyamory* and uncle's second cousins twice removed!

As if it needed to be more complex than it already was

The worst part is, it actually just works.

Also if you've been trying to make a family tree or chart of some kind, and the most popular/most common sites just don't cut it, I highly recommend checking out the site I used Its a little bit wonky at times, but overall far better and easier to use than anything else I tried, plus its free, no sign up involved, and has a desktop app if you want

What she actually did is make Hiccup related to the Chief of the Danger-Brutes, Dastardly Dangerus, through his 2nd cousin twice removed marrying Hiccup's Great Grandmother, Buffintruda

The problem with this is, she's already listed as Chucklehead's wife

And in order for her to be related to Hiccup at all, she would have had to already be married to Chucklehead

Now there are a couple other options of course She could have been married to Chucklehead, had 2 kids, he either died or they got divorced, and then she remarried

BUT to me, that doesn't seem like what happened, just doesn't feel like it the way its spoken about

So for me, I am in the camp of they got polyamory in there

Actually I meant that Grimbeard gave the Jewel to him, which probably meant that he was thinking of letting Hiccup the Second inherit the throne

Thoughts: AHHHHH!

First you know how I said there are no pictures of adult Hiccup?

Unless it is some other dragon?

Also, we finally get the Naming Dame's name! I thought she might be some kind of mystical witch on an island only to take an apprentice toward the end of her life, but somehow Hagretta the Meany doesn't give that vibe. And its not to say Cowell can't name the characters spooky things: take Exellinor for example. But it would be strange if she was just a Hooligan because in that case she could just tell everyone that Stoic wasn't doing his chiefly duty.

Speaking of Stoic, did I mention I loved Stoic in this?

And Fishlegs' hilarious sarcasm.

Also, glad the Visithugs didn't hunt the Peaceables: I have forgotten how dark these books really are!

We get the backstory on the Hogfly! I did wonder when Hiccup had ever trained the Hogfly. Interesting how he just calls it "The Hogfly" instead of Hellsbells. I guess it sounds pretty ridiculous to him for such a dragon. Me too. There are actually so many things mentioned in the books that are never elaborated on and the Hogfly is just one of them.

Very Vicious was a good villain. Gave me a good scare. 10/10

Also, Dastardly Dangerus needs to discipline his child and do what's right for him. He needs to snatch up the Silver Phantom. Not that I feel bad for a villain but come on man, grow a spine!!!

My take on the Hogfly Dragon from the ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ books. A well-meaning but stupid creature. Has a habit of sprouting utter nonsense, even amidst all the drama going on later in the last few books.

And that’s why I adore it so X3

Nevermind after reading How to Train Your Hogfly, I think the Visithugs for sure would wear them prouder. Visithugs got darker skids than their hearts and sense of humor.

All the Vikings would have skid marks, but the Murderous Tribe and the Bashem Oiks proudly wear their skid marks more than any other tribe
