Hey Xumi, how did you learn to compose music? And is there like another skill you have to learn to give it a shot?

Lotsss of trial and error by just trying shit out. The post ended up a bit long, so I'm gonna have more under the cut!

I had some music knowledge from having taken a few music theory exams and took guitar/vocal lessons for a while, but that was about as far as it went, so I had no actual experience in, well, composing anything! It REALLY showed with some of my earliest compositions. Some of which are still in the game, by the way! Saki's Hijinx, Despair Desert, Painful Truth are the oldest songs I've composed for Rejuvenation that are still in the current build. Goldenleaf Town is also one, but has received a remaster since, so that one doesn't really count I think.

I started out with a trial version of Mixcraft (of which I reset the trial........... several times. because i was able to do that for some reason. very cool), then later decided to 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️ FL studio 12 LOL. That's kinda where I had to start actually making my own beats, chords and melodies since I initially relied on a sample library that was included with Mixcraft to do most of my work before then. A lot of the old songs I mentioned previously actually were made using those samples, hence why they sound a little repetitive. The switch to FL was rough at first and you could tell I had like 0 experience with mixing anything (go listen to the oldest version of the rival theme of Xenogene, it's the first song I ever made in FL), but i eventually figured out how to make stuff sound more stereo, got better at writing my own melodies and chord progressions, got access to better VST's and just generally started to get better at the whole music composing thing!!!!!!

Tutorials have definitely helped! Youtube is good. You can find a lot of ideas in different corners. For instance, one of the recent tracks I've made I actually got some ideas from watching a jazz piano chord tutorial!! There's some really cool chord progressions in jazz music and it's been really helpful to get out of the habit of sticking to the same 5 default chords hahaha........... Tho I think the thing I've had to look up the most was how to do proper mixing in production. I'm still not satisfied with my skill in that regard 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠 kms

My biggest problem was that I just kinda... never practiced composing/actually working in a DAW enough until recent years. I used to compose music based on whims of inspiration, which is a bit of a bad habit when you're trying to get better at something, but I think I've kiiiinda gotten out of that now? I'm able to sit down and just get started on music more often lately even if I don't have any direct ideas.

I think I really started to take things more seriously since I've started making more tracks for Rejuvenation, which is subsequently how I figured out I really want to start doing music as part of my actual work now! Funny how that works, isn't it? This is the second time I figured out that I wanted to do a certain thing for a living thanks to this game LMAO

Definitely gotta give a shout out to DM Dokuro though, that man's work is so incredibly unique and has been a huge inspiration for making me want to get better at composing. The music he's composed is what's driving me to try out more new approaches to song structure, chord progressions and the likes! Gospel music has so much soul and is a mix of blues, and R&B and classical, and country. What are your inspiration sources?

My inspiration comes from a range of things. Cartoons, nature, and other music are the main three. But also, inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes. If I’m frustrated about something or my day just has nothing going, that can really motivate me to create. While at the same time, seeing a supermodel on my timeline can do the exact same.

What are your favorite cartoons?

I’ll always love the old technicolor ones from the mid-1900s, Tom and Jerry stand out and I actually really enjoy the really old Speed Racer cartoons as well. I’m big into anime too, mainly shows done by Shonen. Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, and Yu Yu Hakusho have a dear place in my heart. Spongebob takes the crown though, I grew up with him on the TV nonstop. There are so many more I could comment on honestly hahaha, but those are the highlights for sure.

Tell us something about your workflow.

My workflow used to be a mouse and laptop based, click and drag style when I started making music. In fact, I still use this style when making trap beats. When it comes to sampling and lo-fi however, it’s now a lot of chopping on my SP-404sx and finger drumming on my Akai MPD218. Those are the two machines my workflow really revolves around. I also have a Korg Kaossilator which is great for fx and electronic sounding blips and such. Eventually, I run percs, vox, samples, and fx all through my SP to really get that nice beat up sound.

How would creative rituals benefit your workflow?

Creative rituals would be great just to gain a grasp of some sort of mental organization or an agenda.

Do you have any creative rituals?

Not really actually, I guess deep breaths from time to time if I need to recalibrate mentally. It’s always good to take a good thirty second break to just listen how things are complementing each other. That’s why it’s good to always have a drink or something for those little breaks in time.

How do you get in the zone?

I don’t have any specific way to enter a zone honestly. Usually a certain sample will, but I just hop onto my laptop in FL Studio and I’ll enter one eventually as I’m working. Usually when the tempo is set for a song or when the general bounce settles is when the zone creeps in.

How do you start a track?

Digging! Whether it be straight from vinyl or YouTube, the sample is always a spot I enjoy starting at. Listening to some vintage, dusty, and warped jazz has always been enjoyable for me.

Do you have a special template?

Completely empty. New track new world.

What do you put on the master channel?

Nothing! Only rarely I put a limiter if a mix sits really boomy or big, but that’s not often.

Do you care about mastering your tracks?

Personally, mastering is an avenue that I don’t have much experience in at all so I usually just mix to the loudness I prefer. I only have Dre Beats Pro Headphones along with a Beats Pill to do all of my mixing and I guess you could say “mastering” (bedroom production at its finest hahah). Being in my bedroom right next to my neighbors, I was never allowed to get the studio monitors that would allow me to do so. Do I care about mastering though and see the value in it? Of course. For example, when I made ➜ Knockout with Engelwood for Yung Gravy, the engineers that mastered that file really made us sound like gods hahaha. Overall, mastering is definitely something I’m gonna want to be able to do.

How do you arrange and finish a track?

In terms of arrangement, I think a lot about balance. Things will progress just as layers are added to either the drums or melody. The transitions between these layers is what takes a track far. Whether it be a cymbal roll, a stutter, chant, or some extra warping, it adds flavor. I try to think of tracks as sonic collages, you just gotta make sure all the pieces compliment each other and blend seamlessly.

Finishing a track has always been difficult for me and for many I’m sure. I just try my best to gain a listener’s point of view that is as unbiased as possible and listen from start to end. If I feel it’s just full enough, but not overbearing is the point when I deem it complete.

How do you deal with unfinished projects?

I keep ‘em! There’s always new techniques that are learned and could be applied to old projects and could totally revive them. There isn’t a need to just throw away an idea.

How do you store and organize your projects?

I organize them based on project folders and feel/genre.

How do you take care of studio ergonomics?

I’ve got two screens for my DAW which is plenty and just enough table room for my small amount of hardware. I keep my drumpad closest to me since it’s the only one that really takes two arms. Luckily my desk covers about 180 degrees so the rest of my equipment is just a little spin away on my chair. I deal with a lot of wires, but it is what it is hahah

Tell us something about your daily routine, how is your day structured, how do you make room for creativity?

Well at the moment, I’m on summer break so I’ve got all day to be creative. If I’m not making something, it’s either to eat, go on a walk, or watch tv. I just create whatever it may be until I fall asleep. Same thing for when I had school. It would be get home, do whatever work for school, then create ‘til my brain says it’s time to sleep. That carries over into late hours pretty often though. I’m a night owl, so I like working during those late hours. I go to college pretty soon though, so I’m going to have to really discover a new way to make room for creativity.

Share a quick producing tip.

Don’t let your eyes work for you while in your DAW. It’s easy for something visually on your screen to steer you in another direction. Trust your ears.

Luanne Hunt is introducing a new album release, "Life Ain't No Picnic."

March 2023 - Luanne Hunt is a singer and songwriter based in Lady Lake, FL. the artist has been making music for over 20 years, eventually hitting the big time in 2007 with the success of her aptly titled cd, "Breaking Through." She continued to fine-tune her sound and release inspiring music! She is constantly on the lookout for new ideas and new ways to push the envelope and challenges her creativity in order to come up with something that's genuine and personal. Her most recent studio release, "Life Ain't No Picnic," actually feels like a stunning combination of genres such as easy listening, indie-folk, and even jazz, with a wide range of influences to spice it all up and add even more character to the mix. The album features eight songs. The first track is titled "I'll See You In My New Year's Dreams." Musically, the song has a nice retro swing sound, which offers a cheerful, upbeat tone. Luanne's vocals are very easy to relate to. The track is all about reminiscing on the past year and wishing the best for the new one!

The next song is titled "The Picnic," a song that serves as a callback to the album's title. The track has a charming sound, and the piano melodies, along with the other instruments to add color, make for an amazing background texture to Luanne's vocal layers. "That's How You Know She's A Hero" is perhaps the most poignant and emotional song on the album. This beautiful ballad is a story that dates back to the second world war, one of the most difficult moments in modern world history. It's a heartfelt tribute to veterans who are able to keep smiling to protect their loved ones and defend them from the ugliness of war. "How The Curtains Blow" has a charming vintage vibe, and it is an amazing song that is reminiscent of legends like Elton John or Billy Joel in terms of the arrangement. 

"Love Forgives" is another stunning piano ballad and one of the album's most relatable songs. This is a true ode to the selflessness of real love! Luanne has a way of singing about such deep topics in a way that is so seamless and engaging: it isn't always easy to accomplish such a balance! The sixth song on this album is named "Lifting Weights." This one, in particular, has a bit of a honky-tonk / blues sound that makes it really fun and energetic. It also showcases Luanne's ability to explore different styles, adding so much variety to the album! The following song is a beautiful track titled "The Good One." The smooth jazz-inspired introduction takes the album to a whole different place, a further testament to the incredibly kaleidoscopic edge of this release. The string section is amazing as well, at times reminiscent of some of those early legendary Phil Spector productions, such as on The Beatles' Let It Be or on George Harrison's first solo record. Last but definitely not least, the track "More Than Just My Name" is a soothing and melodic conclusion to a stunning album. This track offers a memorable vocal melody and an amazing arrangement, which brings the piano playing to the forefront while still allowing the band to embrace a jazzy sound.

As a whole, the album is truly astonishing." Life Ain't No Picnic" features some stellar vocal parts, but what's even more exciting is the fact that every element in the production has been tailored to perfection. The mix is detail-oriented and quite balanced so that the vocals never overpower the instrumentals and vice versa. The key is to find the sweet spot, and Luanne is an expert at crafting music that's perfectly attuned to the dynamics of the performance, creating a more impactful listening experience. This release is highly recommended for any fan of bright vocal melodies and smooth-sounding instrumentals. This record is an amazing addition to Luanne's growing discography and a great testament to what artists who follow their heart and passion actually sound like!

Arcade Fire Channels Their Inner Absurdist in “Chemistry” Video

“When times are really crazy and fucked up, you have to be able to rely on the absurd. It’s a valuable response to the insanity,” Win Butler explains over the phone before boarding a plane that will take him and his band to Europe to resume the Everything Now Continued Tour. “I think it’s confusing to people if we make something that’s not super serious. [But] one of the pieces of our catalog is, ‘Don’t take it too serious; it’s really light.’”

That ethos is at the heart of the track, as well as its video. Directed by Ray Tintori—whose filmography includes music videos for MGMT and The Killers—and animated by Starburns Industries (Rick & Morty, Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa, Community), the clip tells the story of an animated cat (played by Tootie Tootz from Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce) and a dog who fall in love under…interesting circumstances.

We chatted with Butler about the visuals, finally working with Tintori, and the band’s ever-evolving partnership with New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band, as well as why they don’t tour as much as other bands of their stature. Your “Chemistry” video expands on the song’s theme of chemical attraction, using a mix of animation and live action. What made you decide to portray the story that way?

In a sense it’s almost just sort of like a Tom & Jerry cartoon—an absurdist version of a Tom & Jerry cartoon.

I wanted to talk about an experience I think many of us have had where it’s just complete mutual attraction. My mom’s from LA and grew up Mormon, and my dad’s from Maine and is sixth-generation Harvard. They were camping in Idaho, saw each other for like ten seconds, wrote letters for five years, and have been together their whole lives. On the surface, it’s absurd why people are attracted to each other—it makes absolutely no sense. I just feel like that’s an experience a lot of people have had and wanted to try to capture that feeling a little bit.

This was your first time working with director Ray Tintori, but you’ve wanted to work with him for years. Can you talk a little bit about your fascination with his work?

I remember when he did those MGMT videos. They kind of just came out of nowhere, and you could tell there was so much love put into it. It kind of felt like some sort of collective. We were working with Spike [Jonze] on a short film for The Suburbs at the same time around when that was happening. Spike was good friends with Ray, and we initially were going to make the film in New Orleans—way before we moved there. Ray was going to help, and we were getting everything set up, and then he started working on Beasts of the Southern Wild. We didn’t know anything about it—that was just happening in the background. So we kind of pivoted and ended up making the film in Austin, which was really cool, but it was just sort of this ships in the night moment where we had the instinct to work together.

How did you end up working with him for this video?

A lot of his work is really playful and carefree. We sent him the song and he really liked it. He loves New Orleans [and that’s where we wanted to shoot it]. I had the basic Tom & Jerry idea, and he completely bugged it out with all the robots and sharks [laughs].

The video ends in the middle of Fat Tuesday, which mirrors the playful energy of the song and also pays tribute to New Orleans, where you’ve been living the past few years. In what ways would you say the city has inspired your creativity and music?

You constantly feel like a hack [living here] because there are so many beautiful, amazing musicians. You see twelve-year-olds playing the trombone and you’re just like, “Holy shit, this kid is an embarrassment of riches.” So it’s not in a literal sense, where we’re playing a more New Orlean style of music, but it’s more just being inspired by it.

We hang out at the Preservation Hall, and the saxophone player Charlie Gabriel is like eighty-five and played on most of the Motown records. I met the drummer who played on every Ray Charles record the other night. Some of these dudes—no one knows their name, and they’re kind of forgotten in a sense, but all the shit people are sampling nowadays, they played it with their hands. It’s just really inspiring and makes you want to work harder and work on more music. It kind of gives you this false impression that music is really important and is the center of the universe, which I think is a good deception to have when you’re a musician. Even if it’s not true, it’s good to believe.

You’re about to resume your Everything Now Continued Tour, which sees you traversing Europe and North America for three months and concluding at the Life Is Beautiful festival in Las Vegas. How do you prepare for such extended time on the road?

We’ve done it a lot now, so we kind of like to leave some room for the spirit. We don’t over-practice. We know the songs really well. Our team is really familial—we’ve been working with a lot of the same people for most of our career, and they know how stuff is supposed to sound and we know how stuff’s supposed to go. So when we go home we just try to get back into our lives and get inspired.

All the touring can really be a slog. Being away from home and all the airports… As we get older, we try to space it out a little more, so when we’re on tour we can really appreciate it and give it our all, instead of feeling bogged down. I think that’s why we tour a lot less than other bands in our position—we probably do half as many dates as a lot of bigger bands, just because we give so much. I don’t ever want to be onstage and going through the motions, and thus far I don’t think that’s ever been the case. When we’re up there, we’re in it.

You’ve been collaborating a lot lately with Preservation Hall. How has your relationship with them evolved?

[Our relationship] was born out of friendship and seeing the world in the same way. We started a Mardi Gras crew with them, and half the money goes to the Preservation Hall Foundation and half of it goes to an organization in Haiti called KANPE to try to make links between Haiti and New Orleans and celebrate the historical connection. It’s a deep partnership, and I think one that will be going for the rest of our lives.

What’s it like performing with them?

It’s very humbling. They’re such amazing, beautiful people and such great players. FL

2022 Resolutions

Well hello again! Looks like this has now become a new year's resolution blog for a now-30 year old dude. I'm typing this on my phone from the guest bed in my mom's house, with my girlfriend hanging out here with me. This year has been... a year! Boy howdy. I mean, it's actually gone somewhat smoothly for me all things considered, but things have been getting pretty tumultuous in the US from a political and economic perspective. There's this thing where like, 30% of the country believes that the current president is illegitimate (factually false), and the states whose constitutents mostly believe that are pushing through laws to restrict voting and maybe even change who gets elected to office if they disagree with who it is? Very scary stuff! It might end up getting nasty, and may end up with some real fascist stuff happening very soon. I think the fault is kind of at a structural level with, like just how the country is set up, so I'm thinking about maybe moving away from the US sometime soon. But yeah, They're really ramping up the general ambient difficulty of life in general all around, except if you are rich and white.

Speaking of rich and white, my company went through a public offering this year! I now have more money than I actively know what to do with, and given some stock logistics, as long as I stick around at my job for another 6 months or so and the stock price remains around where it is at now, I would have enough money to sort of just retire, and live off of the ambient income that is gotten from the invested money. The amount of money made from that would be a level that would be comfortable anywhere in the world (except maybe the center of really big cities). This has opened up some very personal, existential questions about what exactly I am doing here on this earth. It's a pretty common exercise where people ask "If money weren't a thing, what would you be doing with your life?" And it is a useful exercise, but people might hide behind the hypotheticalness of the whole question and might not really believe their answer, because the likelihood of them retiring would either be far away or just straight-up nonexistant. However, for me, not only is it a non-hypothetical question, it is one that I've been actively asking myself and pondering like a beautiful orb. The time where I will have what the biz calls "fuck you money" and the opportunity to do what I've always wanted to do, whatever that is, has almost arrived. And what is that? Well, I still don't know. However! I have inklings, pieces of a puzzle I still haven't sorted out yet. I would very much like to travel (but might not be able to freely, thanks COVID). I would like to, at some point, get married and have kids. I have a bucket list that, given the amount of money I have, I should just be able to kind of just knock out given a few months of leisure time (which is doable). I have ideas of how this pieces might go together or flow into each other. But that's pretty much it. Well, maybe this is where new years resolutions will come in! I didn't actually set any last year, so I'll take the opportunity to now.

- get down to a healthy weight: this will involve a routine and diet, most likely. My weight has continued to balloon up to the 185 to even 190 range, which is baaaaad. Under 170 is ideal, but 160 is my goal.

- travel as much as I can: i wanna be creative with it! I want to see so many places I've never been, stamp up my passport, all that jazz.

- Read some books: I got lots of books, books are fun, let's read them instead of sitting on my ass and zoning out after work! I also want to keep a list of finished books.

- Learn more Polish: Hard to quantify, but I'd like to get semi-conversationally good. Maybe there's standardized tests I could look at.

- Pick out an instrument and practice it: I like guitar, I like piano, I'd even count FL studio knowledge, or music theory class.

I think asking for more is pushing it in terms of feasibility, so let's stick with this. I think that, through pursuing these goals, I will help that big "what would I do if money wasn't an object" question. But that's all I got for now.
