So I realized that my usual response to needing something is “Can I make that?”
Can’t believe I’m realizing this just now. Or maybe I always knew it and just never really thought about it more.
This is coming from reaching into my tote bag and feeling around for my little coin purse that I crocheted, which was squished under my notebook carrier that I also...crocheted. And then I thought about how many other things I wondered if I could make before resorting to just looking for it in a store somewhere.
I distinctly remember thinking if I could make a shelf, create a new handle for a kettle that didn’t have one, a little bag to carry my essentials when a backpack is too much. I’ve made myself a box to carry my softbox bulb, diffuser screen, and remote, coasters for the cafe, an A3-sized semestral calendar that isn’t interrupted by breaks in between months so I can see everything week by week. My first instinct when I planned the 2018 ID exhibit was that I—not a committee or anyone else—could mount posters on foam board slats so we wouldn’t just be sticking tarp onto the walls. And I immediately went to National Bookstore and bought all their foam board.
After years of online classes and being able to teach Print & Pub again, I’m getting back into this old habit. I love making things myself, almost to a fault. It always isn’t necessary, I just...want to do things with my hands that doesn’t require looking at a screen all the time. Which kind of resulted in that sem calendar I did the other day.
I’m meeting Aze later to talk about Print & Pub since it’s going to be her first time teaching it. I feel bad that Ponci isn’t around anymore to teach it with me, because it was so fun being able to last year. We co-wrote content, and had the kids use our illustrations from the birding guide we did a few years ago for the Ateneo Wild. It was like a nice full circle moment for us.
I want to make more stuff.

Do Printing Services in Abu Dhabi Offer Large Format Printing?
In today's fast-paced business and marketing environments, visibility is critical. Whether it's for a business event, a trade show, or a large advertising campaign, businesses and individuals in Abu Dhabi often need to make a big impression. Large format printing has become one of the most effective methods for creating eye-catching visuals that grab attention. As such, it’s essential to know whether printing services in Abu Dhabi offer large format printing and how it can benefit your business.
In this article, we will explore the world of large format printing, the specific advantages it brings to businesses in the UAE, and why both Abu Dhabi and printing services in Dubai are the go-to providers for this type of specialized printing.
What is Large Format Printing?
Large format printing refers to the production of large-scale prints using specialized printers that are much larger than conventional office printers. This process allows for the creation of posters, banners, billboards, signage, murals, and other large marketing materials that require high-impact visuals. Large format prints are typically used for outdoor advertising, promotional displays, architectural blueprints, and more.
The technology involved in large format printing can handle various materials like vinyl, fabric, paper, and even rigid substrates like foam boards. This flexibility makes it ideal for businesses looking to create durable, high-quality visual marketing materials for both indoor and outdoor use.
1. Types of Large Format Printing Materials
One of the key benefits of large format printing is the range of materials that can be used. Depending on the application, businesses can choose different materials to suit their specific needs. Common materials include:
Vinyl: Popular for banners and outdoor displays due to its durability and resistance to the elements.
Fabric: Often used for trade show displays and backdrops due to its lightweight and flexible nature.
Foam Boards: Ideal for signage and displays that need to stand on their own or be mounted.
Canvas: Frequently used for artistic prints and high-quality indoor advertising.
Do Printing Services in Abu Dhabi Offer Large Format Printing?
Yes, printing services in Abu Dhabi offer large format printing to cater to the diverse needs of businesses and individuals. Abu Dhabi, being a thriving hub for business and commerce, provides a range of printing solutions for both large and small-scale projects. Local printing service providers are well-equipped with the latest technology to deliver high-quality large format prints in a variety of materials.
These printing companies have specialized machines designed to handle the high demands of large format printing, which allows them to produce prints at impressive speeds without compromising on quality. Additionally, they offer services such as design consultation, finishing options (like lamination and mounting), and delivery to ensure that businesses can get a complete printing solution.
2. Applications of Large Format Printing in Abu Dhabi
In a bustling city like Abu Dhabi, large format printing plays a crucial role in both commercial and public sectors. Common applications include:
Outdoor Advertising: Billboards, posters, and banners placed in high-traffic areas for maximum exposure.
Trade Shows and Exhibitions: Large backdrops, roll-up banners, and booth displays that create a professional and inviting atmosphere.
Retail Signage: Eye-catching window displays, in-store promotional signs, and point-of-sale displays.
Real Estate: Architectural blueprints, floor plans, and property banners are often printed in large formats for ease of viewing and presentation.
Event Marketing: Large posters, banners, and stage backdrops used to promote corporate events, festivals, and social gatherings.
Advantages of Large Format Printing for Businesses in Abu Dhabi
3. High-Quality Visual Impact
One of the primary reasons businesses in Abu Dhabi choose large format printing is its ability to produce high-quality, visually striking results. Large format printers can create sharp, vibrant images with rich colors and fine details, ensuring that your marketing materials stand out in a crowded marketplace.
The use of UV inks, in particular, ensures that outdoor prints remain bright and fade-resistant even when exposed to the sun for extended periods. This level of quality is crucial for creating a strong visual impact, whether you're promoting a new product, advertising a service, or branding your business.
4. Customization and Flexibility
Large format printing offers an unparalleled level of customization, allowing businesses to tailor their prints to meet their specific needs. Whether it's the size, shape, or material, businesses can choose from a wide range of options to create the perfect print for their purposes.
For instance, you can opt for a massive billboard to advertise your business on the side of a busy highway, or you can create smaller, more targeted posters for indoor marketing campaigns. With printing services in Abu Dhabi, the possibilities are virtually limitless, and printing companies are able to accommodate almost any request.
5. Durability and Longevity
Another advantage of large format printing is the durability of the materials used. When investing in large-scale prints, especially for outdoor use, businesses need to ensure that their prints can withstand harsh weather conditions such as extreme heat, wind, and dust—common elements in Abu Dhabi’s desert climate.
Fortunately, large format printers use high-quality, weather-resistant materials like vinyl and UV-resistant inks that ensure the longevity of your prints. This makes it possible for outdoor advertising materials like banners and billboards to remain in excellent condition for months, even years, with minimal fading or wear and tear.
6. Cost-Effective Marketing Solution
Despite the large size of the prints, large format printing is often a cost-effective solution for businesses looking to create high-impact marketing materials. Printing companies in Abu Dhabi offer competitive pricing, especially when producing larger quantities of prints.
For businesses with tight marketing budgets, large format prints provide an excellent return on investment by reaching a broad audience without the recurring costs associated with digital advertising or media placements. The one-time cost of production can result in ongoing brand visibility, making it a financially smart choice for both small businesses and large corporations alike.
Choosing the Right Printing Services in Abu Dhabi
Given the array of options available, choosing the right printing services in Abu Dhabi is essential to ensuring that your large format printing needs are met. When selecting a printing provider, there are several factors to consider:
7. Technology and Equipment
Ensure that the printing service you choose is equipped with the latest large format printing technology. Modern printers offer superior quality, faster turnaround times, and greater versatility when it comes to material options. Check if the company uses eco-friendly inks and materials, especially if sustainability is a priority for your business.
8. Range of Services
Many printing companies in Abu Dhabi offer additional services such as graphic design assistance, mounting, lamination, and delivery. Choosing a full-service printing provider can save you time and hassle, as they will manage the entire process from design to installation. Make sure to inquire about these additional services and their costs when selecting a provider.
9. Turnaround Time
Time is often a critical factor when it comes to marketing materials. Some businesses require quick turnaround times for events, promotions, or campaigns. When choosing a printing service, ensure that they can meet your deadlines without compromising the quality of the final product.
10. Reputation and Reviews
Before committing to a printing service in Abu Dhabi, take the time to read customer reviews and testimonials. A printing company with a good reputation for delivering high-quality work, on time, and with excellent customer service is likely to meet your expectations.
Large Format Printing Services in Dubai
While Abu Dhabi offers numerous large format printing solutions, many businesses also look to printing services in Dubai for their printing needs. Dubai, being one of the major business hubs in the UAE, has a wide range of printing companies that cater to large-scale commercial projects, including those requiring large format printing.
Dubai's printing services are known for their innovation, technology, and competitive pricing, making them a viable option for businesses in Abu Dhabi seeking specialized services or faster turnaround times. The proximity between the two cities ensures that businesses can access the best of both worlds when it comes to high-quality printing.
Conclusion
Large format printing is an essential tool for businesses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai that want to create visually impactful marketing materials. With its ability to produce high-quality, durable, and customizable prints, large format printing offers a range of benefits that help businesses stand out in a competitive market.
Whether you need banners, billboards, posters, or trade show displays, printing services in Abu Dhabi are fully equipped to meet your large format printing needs. With modern technology, competitive pricing, and additional services like design and installation, choosing the right printing provider can make all the difference in your marketing efforts.
By selecting a professional and experienced printing service, businesses can ensure that their large format prints are not only eye-catching but also durable and cost-effective, helping them achieve their marketing goals with ease.

Cardstock poster printing has become a go-to choice for anyone looking to create eye-catching displays, from marketing materials to event promotions. But what exactly is cardstock, and why is it so important? Let’s dive into the world of cardstock poster printing and uncover everything you need to know!
What is Cardstock Poster Printing?
Cardstock poster printing involves using a thicker, more durable paper called cardstock to produce high-quality posters. Unlike standard paper, cardstock offers a sturdier base that can withstand handling, making it ideal for posters that need to last.
Understanding Cardstock
Definition and Types of Cardstock
Cardstock is a type of paper that is thicker and more durable than standard printer paper. It's typically available in various weights, measured in pounds (lbs) or grams per square meter (gsm). The common types include cover stock and index stock, each offering unique characteristics suited for different printing needs.
Thickness and Weight Explained
The weight of cardstock can vary, but most cardstock used for posters ranges from 80 lbs to 110 lbs (about 216 to 300 gsm). Heavier cardstock provides a more premium feel and durability, perfect for high-traffic areas.
Benefits of Cardstock Posters
Durability and Longevity
One of the most significant advantages of cardstock posters is their durability. Whether displayed indoors or outdoors, they resist wear and tear, ensuring your message stays visible longer.
Vibrant Color Reproduction
Cardstock also offers excellent color reproduction. The thicker surface absorbs ink better, resulting in vibrant images and sharp text that grab attention.
Versatility in Use
From events to marketing campaigns, cardstock posters are versatile. You can use them in various settings, including trade shows, classrooms, or community boards.
Applications of Cardstock Posters
Marketing and Advertising
Businesses often utilize cardstock posters for promotions, sales announcements, and product launches. Their vibrant colors and sturdy nature help attract customers and convey messages effectively.
Event Promotions
Planning a concert or a community event? Cardstock posters can help promote your event in style, drawing in crowds with their eye-catching designs.
Educational Purposes
Teachers and educators can also leverage cardstock posters for educational materials, creating interactive and engaging displays that enhance learning.
Designing Your Cardstock Poster
Choosing the Right Size
When designing your poster, size matters! Common sizes include 11” x 17”, 18” x 24”, and 24” x 36”. Consider where your poster will be displayed and how far away viewers will be.
Importance of High-Resolution Images
Always use high-resolution images to ensure clarity and sharpness in your prints. A blurry or pixelated image can undermine your poster's professionalism.
Color Schemes and Typography
Select color schemes and fonts that resonate with your message. Consistent branding will create a cohesive look, making your poster memorable.
Printing Options
Digital vs. Offset Printing
Digital printing is great for smaller runs, offering quick turnaround times. On the other hand, offset printing is better for larger quantities, providing a more cost-effective solution with consistent quality.
Choosing a Reliable Printer
Research and select a printing service known for quality. Read reviews and check samples to ensure they meet your standards.
Finishing Touches
Lamination and Coating
Consider laminating your poster for added protection against moisture and fading. A glossy or matte finish can also enhance the visual appeal.
Mounting Options
For display purposes, mounting your poster on foam board or hanging it from a frame can elevate its presence and durability.
Cost Considerations
Pricing Factors
Pricing for cardstock printing can vary based on size, quantity, and finish. Always get quotes from multiple printers to find the best deal.
Budgeting for Your Project
Establish a budget before starting your project. This will help you make informed decisions regarding design, printing, and additional features.
Tips for Successful Cardstock Printing
Proofing Your Design
Always proof your design before printing. Double-check for any typos, alignment issues, or design flaws.
Test Prints
If you're unsure about colors or quality, request a test print. This can save you from costly mistakes down the line.
Where to Buy Cardstock Posters
Online Printing Services
Many online services specialize in cardstock printing. Websites like Vistaprint or UPrinting can provide competitive pricing and convenient shipping options.
Local Print Shops
Don’t overlook local print shops! They often offer personalized service and quick turnaround times, allowing you to discuss your needs directly.
Sustainability in Printing
Eco-Friendly Cardstock Options
Consider using recycled cardstock or paper sourced from sustainable forests. Many printing services now offer eco-friendly options.
Recycling and Disposal
After your posters have served their purpose, remember to recycle them appropriately. This helps minimize waste and supports environmental sustainability.
Conclusion
Cardstock poster printing is an effective way to create vibrant, durable, and eye-catching displays for various applications. Whether you're promoting a business, planning an event, or enhancing educational materials, cardstock offers a reliable option that stands the test of time. By understanding the benefits, design considerations, and printing options, you can create stunning posters that effectively communicate your message.

How are PVC Foam Boards Made?
Petroleum products, resins, and inorganic chemicals manufacture PVC foam boards. After that, these components are combined under controlled conditions and poured into a mould tailored to the intended use. The compound is warmed during this process, permitting it to be shaped or moulded into the ideal form. After that, it is cooled to harden into the desired shape or profile. Depending on the final application, the finished product can be cut, routed, bent, glued, or left in its original state.
Is PVC Foam Boards Water Resistant?
PVC foam boards resist moisture. They also have a particular composition that makes them water-resistant, preventing them from swelling or changing shape when wet. PVC foam boards absorb less than one percent of water, significantly less than wood.
Are they Sturdy Enough?
The molecular structure of PVC foam sheets ensures they remain firm when cooled. Consequently, they are long-lasting and deformation-resistant unless subjected to extreme heat. These foam boards are known to go on for around thirty to forty years without harm, although typical wearing is obvious.

Week 10 week of exhibition! (Recap)
Monday
Trying to figure out how the publication should be structured. How well the images would print onto the paper we got. (we ended up using a different type of paper.)
buying cups for opening as well..
Boring calm before the storm day. Admin and preparation.
Bought vinyl expecting it to come by the next day.
printing tests
Tuesday
a day of nothing and planning mostly. making sure we were rested and all was in order for Wednesday- vinyl didn't arrive
Wednesday 4th Move in day.
Elena had to get 2 different trailers to move her work as the paintings were too big to put in the first ones and it was a very windy day
Elenas paintings did not fit through the stairway so they had to be taken apart and put together again in the space. Thankfully her parents were around to help with that.
Felix’s work was printing Wednesday, so it didn't make it into space till the day after.
Islas' work all got into the space in one load. And arranged in different ways according to the other works in the space.
Cailin moved all work into space, built a screen for projection, and tested out all possible positions for the projector. Original plan for mounting projector to pillar was unsuccessful due to angles for getting both projection quads (wall and floor) without interruption of peoples head walking in front. Ended up with making a white box for projector to sit on to create a presence for it to avoid foot traffic/H&S hazard. Successfully installed screen for projector, began playing with composition for sculpture/tv/candles.
Thursday
Vinyl issues. Our vinyl finally arrived, however it was more transparent than expected, with light still coming through and bubbles showing. We solved this by painting over the vinyl with matte black paint, which blocked out light and hid bubbles
Simon and Will's level 200 figurative painting class came into see our install process at 1:30 on thursday. We were in chaos mode when we saw them. Elenas work was the only thing that was up. Cailins was all turned off and she was trying to drill holes into the concrete, Isla's work was marked and Felix had nothing up yet. We shared the ideas behind the exhibition with the class.
Drilling holes. The holes were a struggle to get drilled, the walls being concrete was the biggest problem. Only because we had no experience in drilling into concrete. We had the drill from mike and the drill form Elena's dad which were very different and both a little complicated to use.
Friday
Lights
Morning putting lights up. After turning all the lights we had been given by Mike on we found that they were all different. Each having different brightnesses, warmths and hues.
To figure out where we would place the lights, each of us held the lights and aimed to see what looked best for each person's work.
Cailins work was naturally glowing as it was made from light projections and LED lights. It had a warmer and pinky hue, and orange glow from dotted candles.
Elena wanted warm lights that had a sunsetty glow so her works needed warmth in the cooler space. As
Felix's work was on sterile white foam boards; it was better suited to a cooler light so they didn't look yellow and stale.
Islas work suited either or but to create a balance in and flow within the room we decided she would be better off having a cooler tones light
Isla and Felix got one light and Elena got two.
We painted the windows that already had vinyl on black to make them blackout.
Wine sponsor arrived
Publication printing
- As things do not go to plan. Thank god we were working with Carly, Islas flatmate, who did all the layout and design for the publication. We managed to print 60 of those. Ran out of paper and then by the end of the day was so exhausted and hungry.
Saturday (opening night)
8am was so much rain that 5 buckets of water had to be emptied in half an hour,
Thankfully the rain subsided.
Elena went to uni to finish publications while Isla worked on getting her lighting right. As she just had the one light and that meant all other work was left in the dark. Torches were needed and
Cailin
Sunday
Cleanup from the opening.
Sitting the space

When it comes to custom poster printing, the design is key. Consider the purpose of your poster and the message you want to convey. Whether you're promoting an event, showcasing artwork, or advertising a product, the design should align with your goals and target audience.
Selecting the Perfect Size and Material
Custom posters come in various sizes, from small formats for personal use to large-scale prints for public display. Choose a size that suits your needs and complements the intended location. Additionally, select the right material for your poster, taking into account factors such as durability, finish, and texture.
High-Quality Printing Techniques
To ensure your custom poster looks professional and visually appealing, it's essential to choose a printing technique that enhances the quality of your design. Popular printing techniques include digital printing, offset printing, and large-format printing. Each method offers distinct advantages, so consider your requirements and consult with a printing professional if needed.
Finishing Touches: Lamination and Mounting
To protect your custom poster from wear and tear, consider adding a lamination layer. Lamination not only increases durability but also enhances the visual appeal by adding a glossy or matte finish. Additionally, you may choose to mount your poster on foam board or other materials for added stability and easy display.
Promoting Your Message
Custom posters are an excellent tool for promoting your message or spreading awareness about a cause. Whether you're organizing a charity event, political campaign, or community gathering, a well-designed poster can attract attention and generate interest.
Custom Posters for Events and Promotions
Custom posters play a vital role in event marketing and promotion. They can effectively communicate event details, create anticipation, and encourage attendance. By incorporating compelling visuals, clear information, and a call to action, you can maximize the impact of your event posters.

Rebecca Visits Coney Island
Rebecca’s fifth book, Rebecca to the Rescue, tells the story of her family’s visit to Steeplechase Park on Coney Island. Today, they’ve returned to spend a few hours having fun on the rides and playing the games. She decides that this will be the day that she gets really good at the Tip the Bottle game!
The reason being that she has her eyes on a prize. The little wind-up carousel music box is the grand prize that she’ll win if she can knock down all three bottles on her first pitch.
Last time, Victor won a Kewpie doll for her; this time, she wants that carousel. It reminds her of riding the colorful, musical carousel here at the park!
I originally reproduced Rebecca’s Coney Island Games set two years ago. But I've since revamped it with better materials and added a few pieces to the set, combining it with Rebecca’s Souvenir Set that was originally released with the debut of Rebecca’s collection. I was able to reproduce all of it with some foam board, lids, paint, printable images, and fabric scraps.
Here are the original sets released by American Girl, that I based my pieces on. Left is the 2017 games set, right is her 2010 souvenir set.
She’s wearing her Play Dress that matches with the Coney Island Games set. It was released in 2017 and unfortunately retired in 2019 for no good reason at all. It came with the dress, boots, tights, and adorable straw hat. It’s one of my favorite of her outfits, so I’m glad I bought it before it was gone!
Tip the Bottle costs one ticket for three throws. This is a printout of both sides of the original ticket from the souvenir set, taped together and strung on a piece of kitchen twine. When I need printables I usually look at listings on eBay for good photographs of items.
She gets three beanbags to throw at the three bottles. Last time she was here, Victor told her she was bad at throwing things. Rebecca pointed out that he was allowed to play baseball, but girls aren’t. So how would she be able to practice in the first place? Victor invited her to practice her throwing and batting, and so by now she has gotten much better at it. Even still...... will she be good enough to hit all the bottles on the first throw?
Oh no.... after three tries, she only knocked one bottle over!
She gets to spin the prize wheel and pick out one of the cute little chalkware animal figurines, but she came here to win that carousel and she intends to do just that! No giving up until all her tickets are gone!
Her little prize wheel is made from a plastic lid that I painted and mounted to some painted foam board. The animal figurines are Littlest Pet Shop animals. The Kewpie is a thrift store find.
Rebecca steps up to try again. This time, she knocks them all over in the first throw!
Look at that! None of them remained standing!
I made this from foam board that I painted. The text and embellishments are printouts. I managed to find the same font that the AG set used for the text! The center platform is a Mason jar lid painted and glued to a black marker holding it up.
The milk bottles are painted food coloring bottles. The beanbags are fabric scraps sewn into squares and filled with salt.
The little carousel is finally hers!
I made the base of the carousel from an applesauce cup painted with acrylic paints. The center pole is a straw painted metallic gold. The top is foam board and a painted gold bead at the center. To make the horses, I pressed my smallest horse figurine into clay to make a mold, sprayed it with nonstick cooking spray, and then filled it with hot glue. Once the glue dried, I peeled it out of the mold and painted it. I used pictures of the original piece as reference for painting them.
Rebecca can keep all of her small souvenirs in a beautiful memory book with an embossed seashell on the front.
This is a printed image of the original.
She keeps her game tickets, admission tickets, and postcards in here. All of these are also printed images.
Her teeny tiny postcards real postcards from 1915, which I found with a google search. These were my three favorites of the many that I picked out.
Her admission tickets are scans of real 20-cent tickets from the 1910′s. They’re actually not for Steeplechase Park but rather for Luna Park, one of the three amusement parks on Coney Island that were operating back then.
Rebecca is so excited to be bringing home not only a nifty little souvenir, but lots of fun memories of Steeplechase Park!

A Chronicles of Narnia winter wardrobe diorama - Complete
Behind the scenes:
My materials:
pre-made wooden box - part of set from Flying Tiger
one sheet of MDF - 3mm
one sheet of mounting card - A4
one sheet of foam mounting board - A4
two pairs of small brass hinges
a block of craft foam
several scenic trees
fine copper wire
snow flocking
print of a woodland scene
2 jewellery findings painted with metallic copper paint for the door handles
acrylic paints - burnt umber, black, white, gold
plastickote - nut brown
a craft knife
a metal ruler and cutting board
an LED lamppost and button battery pack with two CR2032 batteries
adhesives: PVA, loctite and resin adhesive
battery-powered hand-drill
I bought a set of boxes in a shop with the intention of turning them into mini dioramas and this was my first attempt using them :)
First step was sculpting the craft foam to fit into the box after working out how deep it needed to be for the lamp-post base.
I cut the foam board into rectangles to make a slightly wider base and top of the wardrobe, inspired by the illustrations in the original book, rather than the more dramatic look of the wardrobe in the film. I also added a decorative ridge at the top made out of leftover MDF.
I will freely admit that I suck at measuring and/or cutting things in a straight line, so to no one’s surprise, the MDF doors took several attempts to get the sizing right.
To complicate things for myself, I wanted to incorporate brass hinges. I will not go into the details of how bad a decision this was for someone who can’t measure or - apparently - count.
Once the doors were sized correctly, to give them a bit more depth and an Edwardian/historic look, I used thick mounting card to make a border.
Next stage was painting and I sprayed an allover base coat of nutbrown plastikote, which turned out to be far, far too pale and bland for my tastes, but served as a good base coat to build up on with layers of acrylic.
Before I could attach the doors, I needed to finish the interior. First was gluing a winter backdrop around the interior to add depth beyond the diorama.
And then, we got to the diorama. I painted some shading onto the craft foam to add the illusion of depth, then glued and stuck and generally fastened all the pieces of the scenery into place before adding the first layers of snow - some using tissue and PVA/water, the rest an abundant scatter of flocking. A hole was drilled through the back of the wardrobe for the wiring.
Some hefty amounts of flock later, the wardrobe fitting happened :) The tree branches poking down from the top were made out of bundles of fine twisted copper wire, which were painted and flocked too (see below the wardrobe picture)
Some more flocking was added to the floor and interior of the wardrobe and the battery pack was connected to the lamp and behold! A Narnian scene.

Eyes on the prize!
Dragonchoice project 3D artist Mat Baily has been working feverishly on some physical prizes for players of Dragonchoice – You Choose: Candidate.
Over to Mat with a behind-the-scenes look at the process!
After a brainstorming session where I pitched the idea of giving out prizes for certain achievements in the upcoming Dragonchoice – You Choose: Candidate experience, some fool put me in charge of physical rewards.
To that end, I’ve been quietly working away on ideas for things I can make that people might enjoy owning. The first that I’ve shown publicly was the watchwher figurine that I posted recently on Facebook. So, as I’ve been hinting at for a while, you’ll soon have the opportunity to win some of my unique and limited-run creations.
Here’s a sneak peek at my preparations for some of the first prizes that we’ll be offering!
Disaster. This is a great example of some of the frustrations and failures of 3D printing. Due to a flaw in the surface of the transparent film the layers are formed against, this print suffered a catastrophic failure that I couldn’t see until many hours into the print and pretty close to when it was supposed to finish. There’s nothing you can do at this point except strip down and replace the damaged printer part before starting over.
Success. After I did the images for the different origin story badges you’ll choose from, I thought it would be cool to turn them into actual badges you could wear. These were my test prints for the Jessaf Hold and Madellon Weyr badges. The prints came out pretty much perfectly but I did them at a shallow angle so they’d print quickly, so there was some visible layer stepping to smooth out afterwards.
For the main part of one of the prizes, I’ve printed full set of parts for a watchwher and done all the fiddly work to make it ready to assemble as a model kit. I was worried about it getting bashed around in transit, so I made a foam mounting board to attach the pieces to.
That led me to building a quick shell from card-faced foam board to make it more secure. I liked how it looked so much that I decided to go a little further.
I went ahead and made a front for the box with a transparent window, like it’s a little gift box. I’ve still got some bits to add but I’m quite pleased with the result of my first attempt using the materials I found stuffed under my crafting table at the time.
If you’re interested in getting your hands on my model kits, figures, badges, and whatever else I come up with, keep an eye out for announcements from the Dragonchoice project at https://www.dragonchoice.com/you-choose!

Here is the latest project I just finished. It’s a completely handmade box inspired by the German silhouette animation master Lotte Reiniger. Specifically, the top is a still shot from her 1954 film “Thumbelina”. The smaller sides are a fairy sitting on a flower from that same film and the front are flowers and a bird from the film intermixed among a forest of thick tree branches. So, how did I do it?
The cloth is cotton. I soaked it in a bowl of hot water with a few dashes of the spice Tumeric you can find at the grocery store. That produces the yellow color. Then I took stills from the film, arranged them in my own ways in photoshop, printed them, traced them on tissue paper and stitched the outlines onto the yellow cloth. Tear off the tissue paper and finish all the filling in details of embroidery. Then I simply mounted the various separate squares of embroidery around individual pieces of cardboard and glued down the edges. These embroidered panels were then glued to foam board which I had already glued together to form a small interior box. As you can see I used red foam board. I found it at Hobby Lobby. If they only have white at your store, you can always use colored paper and simply glue it to one side of the foam board if you too would like an interior color other than white. I like the color scheme because it mirrors the colors of the German flag, in homage to Lotte Reiniger. :) To make the lid attachment, I simply snipped two small pieces of red silk ribbon and attached them to the foam board prior to gluing the embroidery panels to those same foam boards.
It’s the first box I’ve done and it was a great learning experience. A cute little keepsake, maybe you’ll be inspired to try something similar.

What Are They Mainly Used For?
PVC foam sheets are used in construction and building, advertising and signage, interiors and furnishings, screen printing and graphics, and the refrigeration industry due to their outdoor-friendly properties.
How Can PVC Foam Boards Be Checked For Quality?
PVC foam sheets are quality checked in various ways by various brands. However, the following are some common tests used to evaluate the performance of PVC foam sheets:
Fire Test: PVC foam sheets used in fire tests must have a class A flame spread rating. PVC froth sheets, when in touch with fire, self-quenches.
Moisture Absorption Test: PVC foam sheets are soaked in water. The weight of the PVC foam sheet before it is submerged in water can be compared to that of post-submerging into the water to detect the rate at which it absorbs moisture. PVC should have a water absorption rate of less than 1%.
Strength Test: To see if the foam sheet can withstand direct impact and heavy weight, it is put through a series of strength testing activities.
What is the Price of PVC Foam Boards?

How the fuck can u do a tutorial on makin fuckin cutouts like wtf!! Thats so cool
Well I probably went the wrong way about it, I tend to do shit the more difficult way.
I found the highest resolution image I could find and blew it up to 72 inches high to fit on the largest paper I have 12x18. I section it off into boxes of 11x17 because I prefer to not let this bleed since my printer can’t even print a straight image.
Alternatively if you don’t have a large printer and paper you could go smaller to fit on the usual 8.5 x 11. I reduced the size down to 8x10.5 to prevent bleed. This is a lot more paper but the 19 sheets will get you around a 6ft image.
After sectioning off my image I moved it over to inDesign and placed the images onto 12x18 pages and centered them to give myself white margins.
He then was printed out in sections and then I trimmed most of the background off. I left some of the white margins on the top and right so I could glue the sections together as I moved up the figure. I just used a box cutter, paper roller and mounting adhesive.
He was printed on 120lb paper so it was a little sturdy but I wanted to reinforce the figure so I mounted him onto some more thick paper. I continued to trim him down, the edges are very forgiving and the shape got better as he was coming together.
From here I actually ran out of glue and had to take him home with me.
From there we scare roommates.
After causing several heart attacks, get some more mounting glue and 3 foam boards sized 20x30 because I cant fit anything bigger in my car. Moving him so much and then mounting him on the foam boards caused some of the seams to pop so he looked a little less neat at this point but that would be fixed afterwards.
I used my box cutter to cut inwards around the body then finally gave him a generous layer of mod podge. He stands at 69in and looks damn fine.
I haven’t made the stand yet but those would be wood or foam triangles that are taped and glued to the 4ft mark. That’s something I’ll be doing over the weekend.
If I were to do this again, there would be a few steps I would have done better but he looks fine as is. So yeah, I probably made this more difficult than it needed to be but yeah… he did it to me.

10 Things You Need to Know About Foamex
Foamex has become quite a popular material in recent times for signage printing, with a lot of brands choosing Foamex printing for their indoor as well as outdoor signage. The versatility and affordability of the material has made it well worth the popularity, so much so that it is one of the most widely used materials today. So let's take a look into the world of Foamex Board and talk about 10 really interesting facts that are sure to interest you and tell you more about this fantastic material that has taken the signage printing world by storm:
Foamex does not refer to the material per se, the material is actually expanded vinyl, and Foamex is the name of the brand. Produced in Switzerland, the company generally supplies the board across the globe and has patented it.
When looking into the creation of Foamex as a material, it was made by compressing PVC foam (don't let the name fool you, it really does not mean that there is any foam in it) to create a board that was durable and also all-weather resistant.
Foamex is rigid in nature and is also hardwearing. Owing to this fact, Foamex is also lightweight, which makes it so perfect for use in outdoor and indoor signage both. While the heavier materials come with the headache of affixing it as well as transporting it, Foamex Board, on the other hand owing to its lightweight nature, does not pose any of these problems.
Since we mentioned earlier that the material is all weather resistant, this means that the changes in temperature or humidity will not end up affecting it. When you compare it to other lighter materials like Correx, that doesn't do so well in outdoor conditions, Foamex, on the other hand, is perfect for both indoor and outdoor usage, so much so that its longevity ranges from somewhere between 3 to 5 years when used outdoors.
Exactly suited for signage printing, a Foamex board can give you vivid results and really bring your designs to life. You can use various kinds of finishes on your signage, which will give it a professional touch and also an air of being expensive. Hence, when you are looking for cost-effective ways to create professional signage that will also last Foamex becomes one of the best options out there.
Signage made out of Foamex is quite easy to mount and one of the best things about them is the fact that they can be affixed to almost any surface, so much so that you could even use double-sided tape or Velcro to mount them with ease and not have to worry about anything.
Foamex is quite easy to customize owing to its lightweight nature, this means that you can mould it to any size as well as design with something as simple as the conventional tools that are used like a jigsaw, drill, etc.
Another great thing about a Foamex Board is the variety of colours that are available in it. Offered in a wide range of colours, it is quite easy to find a sheet in the colour that you are looking for. However, if you are not looking for coloured sheets in particular, the crisp white colour of Foamex is perfect for you to print your designs on it, giving you a vivid payoff.
Apart from using it just for signage, a Foamex board can also be used for personal purposes in your home. You can use them as decorative whenever you want to cover your walls which might have some imperfections in terms of surface texture or even a bad patch that you want to cover.
Another really unique and exciting feature of a Foamex sheet is that you can use a technique which is known as wrapping, which is generally done to the corners of the board. When this technique is applied, you will generally not need a frame to display your board, and it can act as a standalone entity.
With the different kinds of usage and purposes that we told you about, you can understand how Foamex is such a versatile material that can be used for almost any sort of printing needs! So be it thinking about using it for indoor signage or for outdoor signage purposes, it can suit and serve all your needs without any sort of hassles coming your way. Ranging from how easy it is to transport and mount, to the varied options you get in terms of sizes, and colours Foamex printing when well utilised can go a long way in giving you fantastic results that will only help you in creating the right kind of promotional material for your business.
